DA calls for measures to curb gun violence Brauchler says firearms laws must have ‘sharp teeth’

Stephanie Smith leaned over a duck pool at the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo on Aug. 2, helping her children, Logan, Patrick and Lillian, play carnival games. Around them were bustling crowds standing in line at the carnival rides, grabbing a turkey leg, watching live music or browsing livestock barns.

“This is our first year living in Castle Rock, so this our first time,” she said of attending the fair. “It’s awesome. We’re having so much fun.”

In the days following a pair of high-profile mass shootings, one in Ohio and one in Texas, 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler announced a multi-pronged plan to prevent gun violence in his jurisdiction.

The bulk of his approach, announced in a statement Aug. 6, will lean on existing Colorado gun laws to crack down on illegal firearms transactions. But it also calls for legislation in 2020 that would strengthen penalties for illegal gun Brauchler possession among felons and revamp the state’s mental-health hold system.

“Our gun laws need to have teeth, sharp teeth,” Brauchler said regarding convicted felons who obtain guns.

He has also requested funding from county commissioners in the 18th Judicial District — which comprises Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties — for an additional

Kiowa logo shop about more than embroidery Royal B Threads aims to bring out best in customers’ promotions

A seemingly timid young woman steps gingerly into the room, taking a deep breath to fuel her resolve.

Clutching a piece of paper, the symbol of looming change, she waits.

The girl behind the desk will surely recognize she is inept after seeing the paper and her confidence falters. However, an encouraging smile and a warm greeting give her hope to trust and she hesitantly hands over the damp image of her crudely sketched logo. A new and frightening business venture will grow from this encounter for her.

Just such a scenario repeats time after time at Royal B Threads in Kiowa. Bailey Volock, the owner, generates logos that are the first step in fashioning promotional products for businesses. People are often nervous and uncertain when they first approach Bailey, but she instantly puts them at ease and together they produce something that represents the client’s vision.

Her mantra is, “Your vision, our passion.”

Bailey’s message to prospective clients is, “I want you to come in and feel comfortable and bring me your ideas and we can go from there.”

She never disregards or judges an individual’s vision but can and will offer solicited advice or make gentle suggestions for a logo that a client can proudly display on banners, business cards, hats and apparel.

She can take hand drawn logos on any medium or photographs and with the enormity of the talent at Royal B Threads create the best product possible.

She says, “They give us a baseline and we start from there.”

Bailey adds: “The goal is to provide one-stop shopping where the customer brings us a logo or we create the logo and customer can get everything here. We keep the logo on file and this makes it easy for reordering.”

Across the fairgrounds in the poultry barn were Judy Lowery and Dale Mikelson. The two friends went to high school together at Douglas County High School and had recently reconnected, years after their children had grown and finished their own time in 4-H. “I’ve been here most every year of my life,” said Mikelson, a former fair board member.

Whether people were attending for the first time or closing another year in a long-standing tradition of coming to the fair, the annual event brought the community out for funpacked events. Running from Aug. 1-4, the event boasted a carnival, rodeo events, a concert with country music star Gary Allan and the 60th anniversary of the Douglas County Jr. Livestock Sale.

Blue-water vets see restoration of benefits Law helps those suffering from Vietnam exposure to Agent Orange

Vietnam veterans including bluewater veterans, and Vietnam veterans’ widows who have not remarried, may benefit from the recently signed Blue Water Vietnam Veterans Act, and are encouraged to contact Elbert County Veteran Service Office.

“The Blue Water Vietnam Veterans Act, signed into law recently, restores VA benefits to sailors and Marines suffering from Agent Orange-related illnesses, who served aboard ships off the Vietnamese coast between 1962 and 1975,” said Ric Morgan, with the Elbert County Veterans Service Office. “Any Vietnam veterans or un-remarried widows should contact the office to review VA benefits and eligibility.”

In Procopio v. Wilkie, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit handed down a 9-2 decision ruling that all blue-water Vietnam veterans are now eligible to file Agent-Orange

related VA claims. Historically sailors stationed offshore were referred to as the blue-water Navy, as opposed to the “brown water” sailors, who were on Vietnam’s rivers, inland waterways and harbors. Blue-water sailors have been excluded from benefits related to dioxin-tainted herbicide used during the war.

The ruling also allows un-remarried widows of veterans to file for benefits, if the veteran’s death was attributed to one of the Agent-Orange-related conditions. Benefits for children born with spina bifida due to a parent’s exposure have been expanded as well.

According to Morgan, as many as 90,000 veterans who had their disability benefits taken away by the VA in 2002 after arbitrary regulatory changes will again be eligible. Those who have been denied benefits may now qualify, and Morgan encourages them to call and revisit their eligibility.

“Here in Elbert County, any veteran or un-remarried widow should call to review their claim,” said Morgan.

Bailey is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where her family owns a working cattle ranch run by her aunt and her sister. She came to Colorado at 21 after being diagnosed with cancer to live with her parents and recover.

Never idle for long, she began to do embroidery using a tiny machine, for friends and then friends of friends. As she finished her cancer treatments and graduated summa cum laude from college, she began to concentrate on her business, and now Royal B Threads ships to 48 states and nine foreign countries. Bailey is also responsible for logos for Elbert County, the towns of Kiowa and Elbert, Parker schools’ sports teams and many businesses and associations.

Cancer is not the only obstacle Bailey faced with courage and optimism. During the Kiowa fire in March of 2018, her shop burned, forcing her to move to the current location. Equipment melted while water and smoke damage finished off everything else.

Opening within 67 days of the fire was no small feat but was made possible by Bailey’s will to succeed. She does acknowledge, “I have a lot of drive to succeed.”

Despite these obstacles, Bailey still finds humor in most situations, readily laughing at her own challenges. The Kiowa fire was no exception when the goats were turned out as their houses melted and with a chuckle she relates that, “There are pictures of the goats in the barn on top of the hay calmly eating amid all the commotion.”

And finally, just where did the name Royal B Threads originate? Not surprisingly, Bailey was 2012 Elizabeth Stampede Queen and before that reigned as Rodeo Queen in New Mexico, and a reference to her imperial past seems only fitting.

Video-game studies don’t show link to violence Texas mass shooting puts theoretical connection under scrutiny again

Do video games trigger violent behavior? Scientific studies have found no link. But the persistent theory is back in the headlines following the recent mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.

An online manifesto thought to be authored by the suspected gunman briefly mentioned the combat game Call of Duty. Then President Trump weighed in, charging that “gruesome and grisly video games” contribute to a “glorification of violence.”

Trump’s statements were more reserved compared with his last brush

with the subject in 2018, when he called video games “vicious” and summoned game-industry executives to meet at the White House, to little lasting effect.

The Entertainment Software Association, the biggest video game trade group, reiterated its position that there is no causal connection between video games and violence.

“More than 165 million Americans enjoy video games, and billions of people play video games worldwide,” the group said in a statement. “Yet other societies, where video games are played as avidly, do not contend with the tragic levels of violence that occur in the U.S.” Activision Blizzard did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Call of Duty.

What does the research show?

“There are no longitudinal studies that show a link between violence and video games,” said Benjamin Bur-

roughs, a professor of emerging media at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“Certainly, there is no linkage to gun violence.”

Burroughs said that some studies show a short-term increase in aggressive thoughts and feelings after playing video games, but nothing that rises to the level of violence.

“Plenty of gamers and get upset when they lose or feel the game was `cheating,’ but it doesn’t lead to violent outputs,” he said.

In 2006, a small study by Indiana University researchers found that teenagers who played violent video games showed higher levels of emotional arousal but less activity in the parts of the brain associated with the ability to plan, control and direct thoughts and behavior.

About 20% were interested in violent video games, compared with 70% of the general population, he explained in his 2017 book “Moral Combat: Why the War on Violent Video Games Is Wrong.”

Another study by Markey and his colleagues showed that violence tends to dip when a new violent movie or video game comes out, possibility because people are at home playing the game or in theaters watching the movie.

“The general story is people who play video games right after might be a little hopped up and jerky but it doesn’t fundamentally alter who they are,” he said. “It is like going to see a sad movie.

It might make you cry but it doesn’t make you clinically depressed.”

Why does this theory persist?

The theory persists in part because politicians on both sides of the aisle have taken it up as an easy target, since it lacks a powerful lobby like, say, the National Rifle Association.

Fans of Monopoly can now play a localized version of the popular board game. Castle Rock-Opoly, released in April, mirrors the wellknown game of Monopoly but features local fixtures in the Castle Rock community.

Players can purchase properties ranging from the Castle Café to town hall to Rock Park. Rather than being sent to jail, as in Monopoly, they can get stuck in a “traffic jam” or pass “I

love Castle Rock.”

Castle Rock-Opoly is available at the Castle Rock Walmart, 133 Sam Walton Lane. The game is created in Cincinnati by Late for the Sky Production Company, which has no affiliation with the maker of Monopoly, according to a news release.

The Owner of Late for the Sky, Bill Schulte, said the company looks for communities that are well-liked by residents and have researched a number of Colorado communities for future game development.

Longhorn on loose corralled by cowboy inside building ASSOCIATED PRESS

An enterprising cowboy lassoed a longhorn inside the lobby of a Colorado Springs building after the cow broke free from a downtown parade and charged its way inside.

Pedestrians scurried out of harm’s way during the brief escape as the longhorn romped across a street and through an open door at the Plaza of the Rockies on Aug. 2. Fast-thinking spectators quickly shut the door to contain the animal, which emerged moments later, roped by a cowboy atop a horse.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and several spectators caught the drama on camera.

Amber Keller, who works on the ground floor of the building, was

outside watching the tail end of the parade when she saw the longhorn break free from the herd.

“They just got a little ornery. ... She just kind of took off, and the cowboys were right on her,’’ she said of the rogue longhorn.

Keller, who filmed the scene from behind a metal bench, told The Associated Press she wasn’t scared, but “everybody was a little concerned and shook up.’’

“It was a little chaotic,’’ said Keller, who also praised the cowboys’ quick response.

“It looked like they had it all under control. I don’t think he even flinched going into the building,’’ she said of the cowboy who lassoed the longhorn.

The parade was held to mark a weekend rodeo.

Brauchler chided the nature of national debates over mass shooting and gun violence prevention that flare with each new tragedy. Debate surged nationwide the weekend of Aug. 3 following shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. The shootings left a combined 31 people dead, the Associated Press reported.

Brauchler’s announcement said his plans rely on “practical measures” that should “be quickly implemented here in Colorado.”

“We must resist getting caught up in a debate of ‘Who is right?’ instead of ‘What is right?’ Rather than getting mired down in controversial and divisive legislation, I am committed to implementing measures in my jurisdiction now using tools the Legislature has already given,” he said.

The announcement did not name any one piece of legislation in particular, but the 2019 state legislative session produced fiery battles in the gun rights arena.

Colorado in April ushered in a contentious red flag law that has spurred talk of recall efforts against supporters like Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock, who passionately backed the legislation as it worked through the Democrat-controlled state Legislature in 2019. The act is named for fallen

The red flag law allows a judge to order a person’s guns be removed if they are believed to a significant risk to themselves or others. The committee planning to recall Spurlock hopes to begin circulating petitions this fall.

The 2019 bill was not the first attempt at red flag legislation in Colorado. In the previous session, a similar bill was introduced but voted down.

Brauchler, a Republican from Parker, supported the prior version but backed away from the 2019 version, citing concerns over differences between the two bills.

Here’s more on what Brauchler says should be done to curb gun violence in the 18th Judicial District and Colorado, per his Aug. 6 announcement: Brauchler says there are existing Colorado laws aimed at denying firearms “to those in our neighbor-

hoods who should not have them.”

He names felons, domestic violence perpetrators and the dangerously mentally ill as examples of people who are prohibited by law from purchasing firearms.

“But a significant number of them do it anyway,” he said. “Those cases do not always make it to court.

I want to see gun sellers and police working together to more vigorously enforce those existing laws.”

Brauchler has assigned his second-incommand within the district attorney’s office, Assistant District Attorney Matt Maillaro, to lead an effort among local and federal law enforcement agencies, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and holders of George Brauchler, federal firearms district attorney licenses “to create an enhanced approach to the detection, investigation and prosecution of these crimes.”

strengthen penalties for felons who obtain weapons illegally. He says felons who illegally possess firearms can be convicted of a low-level felony and leave court with probation, multiple times.

“Even less penalties exist if a felon illegally attempts to purchase a firearm by lying to a seller,” he said.

He says felons who attempt to illegally acquire a firearm, successfully acquire a firearm, and those who provide them with the firearms illegally, should face prison time.

He also calls on the Legislature to “fix our broken and ineffective 72-hour mental health hold law. Its failures do not keep us safer and do nothing to help those most in need.”

The announcement pointed to Colorado’s painful history with gun violence, naming the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, the 2017 killing of Douglas County Sheriff ’s Deputy Zackari Parrish and the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting, which occurred just three months ago.

Each tragedy drew national attention and happened within the 18th Judicial District. The announcement also noted the close proximity of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre to the district.

“There is no debate that we need to keep firearms out of the hands of people who legally should not have them. We need laws on the books that promise punishment of people who knowingly thwart those rules,” Brauchler said. “I urge those who share these beliefs to join me in implementing them.”

More than 75 new houses will be on display during the annual Parade of Homes, presented through Aug. 25 by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver.

This year’s parade also will debut two weekend events — Chefs on Parade and Paws on Parade — and a new feature, the Samsung Connected Home.

“We’re excited to introduce new features for the Denver Parade of Homes this year,” Tracy Sandoval, 2019 chair of the Parade of Homes and marketing manager at Meritage Homes, said in a news release. “The Chefs on Parade and Paws on Parade events and Samsung Connected Home will provide attendees unique opportunities to experience the Parade and see the latest in home trends.”

In 2011, the Supreme Court rejected a California law banning the sale of violent video games to children. The decision found that video games, like other media, are protected by the First Amendment.

The last, final diatribe on an unneeded, unnecessary word

, like, give up.

Once a year for the past eight years, I have written a column about the extra-grammatical use of the word “like” and its part in the ruination of the English language.

Each column has included the disclaimer that I am an imperfect grammarian myself, and I am not the ulti- QUIET mate arbiter of what DESPERATION is and is not good English.

But I know what I like, as it were.

I thought by now “like” would have gone away, but I see and hear that it hasn’t and now consider it a lost cause.

Therefore, this will Craig Marshall be my final diatribe. Smith I refer anyone who cares about language to John McWhorter. McWhorter is associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University,

where he teaches linguistics.

He wrote “The Evolution of `Like’: How the ubiquitous, often-reviled word associated with young people and slackers represents the everchanging English language” for The Atlantic (November 25, 2016).

It is far more insightful than I am capable of being, but I simply think “like” is an example of a dreadful verbal laziness.

There’s a title of a chapter in one of McWhorter’s books — “Words on the Move” — that summarizes the problem: “When Words Stop Being Words.”

It’s natural to hem and haw, and stumble a bit in casual conversations.

Everyone at a dinner table doesn’t speak in concise sentences, like they often do in films.

We stop, we start over, change in mid-word to something else.

McWhorter calls that “easing” language.

But for some, that eased language is all the time.

I gave up on “cool” a long, long time ago. I have likewise given up on “awesome.” I think there is hope that “no worries” and “no problem” will eventually go away.

When a reader compliments one of my columns for its humor but adds “LOL” I lose my will to live. Almost.

McWhorter says that easing is “the way that one signals warm connection, group membership,” and that makes perfect sense. Gang members talk to each other like gang members.

Not like Mensa members.

Who’s the boss? You’re the boss

W

hether you are a business owner, an executive, a manager, or a supervisor with a team of people reporting to you, or you are someone who reports into another person, guess what? You are all still the boss.

That’s right, you are all still the boss. What do I mean by that? I mean that regardless of our role or title, it is ultimately our responsibility to perform at the highest level possible for ourselves and our teams.

And we do not strive for that just because we have to, we strive for that because we want to. If all we ever do is take orders from those in charge of us or above us in our department or by title, all we will ever do is live up to is their expectations and never our own. And we will probably find ourselves

always reporting to someone else.

Just think about this for a moment. Who does the CEO report to?

Well if there WINNING is a board WORDS of directors, the CEO usually reports into the board.

If the CEO only took the direction of the board and wasn’t Michael Norton innovative, driven, and inspiring, they probably wouldn’t be the CEO for much longer. And what about the chairman of the board, who do they report to? They report to the shareholders, don’t they? Well if they didn’t hold themselves to a higher standard and constantly think of ways

to improve productivity, revenues, and returns, they probably would be replaced.

Chairmen, CEOs, owners, managers, and all level of personnel within an organization should always be thinking beyond what others expect of them when it comes to performance. As a matter of fact, all of us, personally and professionally would do well to think about how we can do better and achieve more than we have ever done or have accomplished before. We should always be thinking about how we could raise the bar for ourselves and not wait for a performance review or feedback from others.

a recent experience in a dentist’s chair, which, for many, would be torture enough.

I was reclined in a chair, numbed to the gills, and with a contraption in my mouth. Helpless, powerless.

On one side of me was the dentist, who was removing a crown ahead of replacing it.

On the other side of me was an assistant.

(Both are very professional, highly competent, and personable.)

The assistant began a conversation that included three “likes” per sentence, at a minimum. It was the deep dish of agony, and I told Jennifer that it was worse than the excavation that was going on in my mouth.

I imagined I was hearing dialogue from “Clueless.”

It’s everywhere: I read an interview with Megan Rapinoe. I watched an interview with Emilia Clarke. It’s in locker rooms, art galleries, “cool” restaurants.

And it doesn’t mean a thing.

Investing 101: Don’t look for instant gratification

he media continues to satisfy our need for instant information, but how much is too much? Many folks tell me they are on information overload.

Also, some news stories can make you feel inadequate if you don’t understand all the acronyms they use. Instead of empowering us as investors, this tweet type of news snippets that appear all day long on your FINANCIAL phone or computer STRATEGIES are not helping, they may actually be hurting your chances of being a good investor.

Legendary investor Warren Buffett defines investing as “… the process of laying out money now to receive Patricia Kummer more money in the future.” My simple definition is to take risk now for future return.

This would indicate that reward is not instant but takes time. This could be the disconnect from what we expect in our daily lives, which is usually instant gratification in everything from our first cup of cof-

owning and being held accountable to ourselves for the job that we are doing regardless of who we are working with or for, or what the job involves. Personal pride doesn’t mean we work more hours than we should, although it could if it means completing something that meets our own standards. Personal pride means that we don’t expect others to do our job. It means we hold ourselves accountable for completing the task or job at hand and getting it right. Personal pride means that once we are capable, we do not have to be told what to do, we know what is required and get it done.

You know the saying, “You’re not the boss of me.” We usually hear that in a facetious or sarcastic tone, or when someone is angry with another person for trying to boss them around. But guess what, unless we take ownership for our actions and become our own boss in all that we

Do you look at the stock market more than once a day? Do you look at your investment accounts more than once a month? If so, you too may have fallen in the trap of thinking you should see results quickly.

This can backfire if you make decisions to abandon a certain investment if it has not performed in the first month, quarter or year. This is where knowledge around portfolio construction could be helpful. It can help determine how many short, intermediate and long-term assets you need. It probably doesn’t make sense to look at the long-term holding (meaning 10 years plus) every day or even every month. This could cause you to sell prematurely and miss out on future benefits.

It is important to understand at least the basics before you invest.

Meat alternatives grow in popularity Restaurant owners, health expert weigh in on benefits, challenges

one are the days when vegans and vegetarians couldn’t order a hamburger on the menu.

Alternative meat brands such as Impossible Foods and Beyond Burger are popping up in not only sit-down restaurants and grocery stores, but also fast food joints across the country.

They call it the future of protein: the Beyond Burger uses a mix of legumes, oils, rice protein, potato starch and other vegan-friendly ingredients, whereas the Impossible Burger is made from mostly soy. Both substances are processed into a patty or sausage, or ground up into crumbles for recipes such as tacos.

According to Forbes.com, the plantbased craze is on the rise, with 95% of U.S. grocery stores selling plantbased meat products and an increasing number of restaurants adding similar options to their menus.

Wes Moralez, who owns the Brutal Poodle on South Broadway in Denver, decided to start serving the Beyond Burger in his heavy-metal-themed restaurant earlier this year. The plant-based alternative looks and tastes like beef, he said, adding that the product fits his clientele.

“Here we have a niche concept that revolves around heavy-metal punk rock,” Moralez said. “In that scene, there are a ton of vegans and vegetarians.”

But the growing popularity and limited supply of the products has presented challenges for some restaurants.

That was the case for Curtis Baca, manager of Steuben’s in Arvada.

“We would never be able to get them,” he said of the Impossible

Burger. “So we couldn’t keep it on the menu.”

Instead his restaurant serves a plant-based veggie burger that is made in-house.

While he doesn’t see many plantbased eaters, the customers who try the burger alternative tend to enjoy it, he said.

Reasons for jumping on the plant-based bandwagon vary, but many people do so for the health and environmental benefits.

from Parker, switched his diet 12 years ago after several scares with heart disease, high blood pressure and weight gain. Rather than moving forward with more medical tests, he decided to try a strict plant-based diet, combined with medication, for 30 days.

“My cholesterol dropped about 30 points,” Casados said. “My doctor said, ‘What did you do?’ I said, ‘I changed my diet,’ and that’s the last time I saw him.”

Casados, who worked in information technology, went back to school to become a nutritionist and is now off all medication. He and his wife host a yearly summit to inform others on the benefits of plant-based eating.

When it comes to meat alternatives like the Impossible Burger, Casados is wary. The product is still processed and contains saturated fat.

Nonetheless, he said, “It’s better than eating a mega-burger.”

Broncos rookie wide receiver catching on Juwann Winfree joins team after two frustrating injuries in college career

By his conservative count, Broncos rookie receiver Juwann Winfree viewed his game-winning tip and toe-drag touchdown against Atlanta in the Hall of Fame Game about 100 times.

Granted, it was one catch in a preseason game. But that one reception told Winfree plenty — he could hold his own on this level after ACL and ankle injuries limited his playing time at the University of Colorado.

“I saw what’s possible,” Winfree said Aug. 5 after a practice that featured a skirmish between wideouts Courtland Sutton and Emmanuel Sanders. “It’s possible I can help contribute and possible I can do this at the highest level. That catch lets me know I do belong here.”

The acrobatic catch was the

picture of concentration as rookie QB Brett Rypien’s pass was batted into the air by a Falcons defensive back in the end zone. Winfree spun around to track it and hauled it in while dragging his feet with 1:26 remaining to give Denver a 14-10 win in the NFL’s preseason opener Aug. 1.

That play illustrates why Pro Bowl cornerback Chris Harris Jr. stays on Winfree in practice. Harris sees the big-play potential in the receiver who wears No. 15.

“He’s just strong. He’s a strong rookie,” Harris said. “You don’t see a lot of rookies like that.”

Being a rookie, though, Winfree may be prone to lapses in concentration. Harris has that covered.

“Some days they might want to take it in and don’t want to bring that full effort in,” Harris said. “But I am definitely staying on `15’ because he has a lot of talent. He can definitely help us.”

round to take him. That caught Winfree a little by surprise; he was hearing the Vikings would use one of their sixth-round picks on him.

“That’s huge for me the Broncos had that much confidence in me,” Winfree said.

“Every time I’m out here, I think about that and try to prove to them why I should be out here.”

His college career took a winding route. After playing sparingly at Maryland as a freshman, Winfree spent a year at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas before showing up at Colorado.

Then, the injuries hit. A torn ACL during camp in 2016 sidelined him for the season.

Last season, he suffered a high ankle sprain at Nebraska that kept him out for a month.

In two seasons with the Buffaloes, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Winfree caught 49 passes for 649 yards and four touchdowns. His best game was on Nov. 11, 2017, against Southern California when he caught five passes for 163 yards and two scores.

The missed games due to injuries were “super frustrating,” he said. “The more games, the more experience,

you feel more comfortable.

“I’ve got to catch up,” Winfree added. “But my whole life has kind of been catching up.

Now I’m here trying to catch up with the veterans.”

The Broncos have quite a stable of receivers, with Sanders, Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton the locks to make the team. Winfree is vying for a spot with the likes of Tim Patrick, River Cracraft, Steven Dunbar Jr., Trinity Benson, Brendan Langley, Kelvin McKnight and Nick Williams.

“I’m a playmaker,” said Winfree, who dealt with a leg ailment early in camp. “Wherever I’m at, special teams, receiver, blocking, I’m just trying to make plays. You’re going to get a selfless player.”

Sometimes, the moment seems almost surreal for Winfree. Like catching passes from quarterback Joe Flacco. Or hauling in a reception while Harris was covering him (it happened during organized training activities). Or that winning reception in the inaugural preseason game.

“I’m happy I made (the catch) and excited for the future,” Winfree said. “But that’s one game. It’s preseason.

Every week, I’ve got to keep adding on and keep adding on, keep showing why I deserve to be here and keep showing why I can help us win.”

Go-kart racing offers a rush around Denver metro area

ust off an inconspicuous industrial side street, kids as young as 5 and adults as old as 80 don helmets, strap on seatbelts and zip around like something out of a video game.

They’re racing go-karts at K1 Speed in Highlands Ranch, one of a handful of places in the Denver metro area where impassioned drivers, beginners and fun-seeking groups can test their skills on winding tracks.

“Karting is definitely a little different than your regular pool day,” said Nichole Sarno, K1’s assistant manager.

Christian Obrecht, a 47-year-old from Denver, built up a love for karting near Bandimere Speedway, a professional drag-racing track just west of Lakewood. And although Obrecht wasn’t racing full-sized cars, renting karts proved to be a lasting passion for him — eventually, he bought his own wheels.

“I started up just from actually watching a commercial one time, and I was like, ‘Oh, man, I kind of want to get into this,” Obrecht said.

Once he came back to a track with his own kart, he found a “super open and friendly” community.

“I didn’t even know how to get the thing off my truck. I was standing there — it was like my first day of school,” Obrecht said. “This guy was just walking by like, ‘Do you need help?’ Those are the guys I hang out with now to this day with kart racing.”

Male drivers are a bit more common than females at K1, Sarno said, but they’re not far off in numbers.

“Our fastest is a 17-year-old guy; the next fastest is a 13-year-old girl,” said Sarno, referring to K1’s speed records.

Adult karts can reach about 45 mph, and manual — or “shifter” — karts can reach about 55 mph, while junior karts for kids run about 25 to 30 mph, Sarno said. And on tracks

that allow personal, non-rental karts, Obrecht’s vehicle can reach about 100 mph.

Despite the high-energy atmosphere of karting, what Obrecht enjoys most is the mental clarity the repetition of the turns can bring.

“It’s all you’re thinking about when you’re doing it,” Obrecht said.

Sarno’s favorite part is “the thrill of it” — as an employee at K1, she often drives the karts — but watching others speed around is satisfying, too.

“The excitement they get from it — a little girl beat her brother, a kid beat his dad,” Sarno said.

“Watching people grow and find passion in karting is my favorite thing here.”

On an evening in late July, Anil Kumar Somala, 44, came to K1 with his children, Pratheek Somala, 10, and 12-year-old Bhavagnya Somala. The father from Highlands Ranch wanted to give his kids driving experience to be more comfortable on streets one day.

His daughter, Bhavagnya, came to K1 before with apprehension, but she stepped up with more confidence this time.
