Crowds in Castle Rock lined Perry Street on July 26 for a chance to see a sight rarely seen since the 1800s — cowhands driving a herd of longhorn steers and cattle through the area. The Western Heritage Welcome in Castle Rock recognizes the 1800s tradition of driving large cattle herds through the area route called the “Goodnight-Loving Trail” by driving a herd of longhorn steer and cattle through downtown.

Elbert County citizens are invited to attend the second annual Protectors of Elizabeth Tribute from 4 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 14, where they can meet first responders from the area and enjoy an afternoon of food, fun and mingling with the men and women who help keep the county safe. Festivities will be held at the Farmers Insurance Means Agency in Elizabeth, 166 S. Main St., and the American Legion Post 82 Color Guard will present the colors at 5 p.m.

Herbalist, veterinarians join forces for health Garden Fairy Apothecary is labor of love for three women

Advertised Herbalist classes caught Margie Ashura’s eye, which was often engaged in reconnaissance seeking out new volunteer opportunities even before the last event finished. This new educational adventure required a different kind of commitment competing with volunteer hours. It was too late to save herself — Ashura was soon a devotee.

After receiving her Certified and Master Herbalist Training, she began to haunt the Garden Fairy Apothecary to learn even more about herbs and their healing properties, eventually working full-time immersed in medicinal herbs and tinctures.

Each day brought new inquiries and health problems to be addressed and exciting victories that stimulated her active and creative mind. And then the unthinkable happened — Garden Fairy Apothecary’s owner decided to close the shop. Ashura felt closing the shop would leave clients adrift with a debilitating void in their lives.

Ashura completed the Certified Herbalist and Master Herbalist Training from the North American School of Clinical Herbalism in 2011 and was once a commercial pilot, and her wing person (ahem!) with equally impressive credentials is Eckert-Peterson, who owns and operates Coppergate Animal Clinic in Loveland. Ursula was named 2012 Veterinarian of the Year by Colorado Veterinary Association for her advocacy for treating exotic species along with domestic pets and animals. She grew up studying herbalism in Germany with her grandmother and brings with her time-honored remedies.

A third party in this progressive group is Christa Bruns, also a veterinarian, who has used alternative treatment in tandem with conventional medicine in large and small animals. Bruns is not currently practicing veterinarian medicine hands-on but researches the latest studies and shares information with pet owners and any other interested parties. Her main focus is combining nutrition, acupuncture and herbalism to treat the whole animal. She also provides direction to animal owners on the purported benefits of cannabinoids (CBDs).

Bruns says she follows CBD treatments for animals very closely and is inspired to use these treatments in her own practice. Extensive research is being done by neurologist, Dr. Stephanie McGrath, at Colorado State University who has had positive results in smallscale studies treating epileptic dogs with CBD by reducing the frequency of seizures. “Positive results can be believed,” Christa says, “because

animals don’t fake it.” Christa hopes, armed with successful research, to introduce these medicines into independent clinics that attract clientele who are receptive to innovative medications for their animals.

The herbs the apothecary uses in the tinctures and other herbal medicines are obtained from reputable suppliers and some come from Germany the women say. Every product or byproduct they sell is thoroughly researched and carefully prepared to optimize the benefit of the tinctures while being certain of the client needs and their tolerance level. For instance, many tinctures are made with alcohol, but alcohol is dangerous for animals and other suspension mediums (liquid in which the medication does not dissolve but is suspended) are used for animals. It is important that medicinal herb extracts come from knowledgeable producers.

All three agree it is possible to buy products similar to theirs off of the store shelf but buyer beware. Ashura warns that with products found in any venue, it is important to be aware of just what is in it. All herbal products are not created equal, she said, being especially careful to advise clients that conventional medicines or other herbal products may interact poorly and as a precaution consulting your doctor before taking anything is necessary. Ashura never advises going off of prescribed medication without a doctor’s permission.

Ashura, Eckert-Peterson and Bruns want to share their knowledge to bring an awareness of the benefits of alternative medicinal herbs for both animals and their owners. Garden Fairy Apothecary is a place you will want to tell your like-minded friends to visit. Besides it is just fun to say.

Despite calls to start over, U.S. health system covers 90% Trump, some Democrats work to upend current insurance situation

America’s much-maligned health care system is covering 9 out of 10 people, a fact that hasn’t stopped the 2020 presidential candidates from refighting battles about how to provide coverage, from Bernie Sanders’ call for replacing private insurance with a government plan to President Donald Trump’s pledge to erase the Affordable Care Act and start over.

The politicians are depicting a system in meltdown. The numbers point to a different story, not as dire and more nuanced.

Government surveys show that about 90% of the population has coverage, largely preserving gains from President Barack Obama’s years.

Independent experts estimate that more than one-half of the roughly 30 million uninsured people in the country are eligible for health insurance through existing programs.

Lack of coverage was a growing problem in 2010 when Democrats under Obama passed his health law. Now the bigger issue seems to be that many people with insurance are struggling to pay their deductibles and copays.

“We need to have a debate about coverage and cost, and we have seen less focus on cost than we have on coverage,” said Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet.

He is among the Democratic presidential candidates who favor building on the current system, not replacing it entirely, as does Sanders.

“The cost issue is a huge issue for the country and for families,” Bennet said.

A report this year by the Commonwealth Fund think tank in New York found fewer uninsured Americans than in 2010 but more who are “underinsured,” a term that describes policyholders exposed to high out-ofpocket costs, when compared with their individual incomes. The report estimated 44 million Americans were underinsured in 2018, compared with 29 million in 2010 when the law was passed. That’s about a 50% increase, with the greatest jump among people with employer coverage.

“When you have 90% of the American people covered and they are drowning in their health care bills, what they want to hear from politicians are plans that will address their health care costs, more than plans that will cover the remaining 10 percent,” said Drew Altman, president of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan research organization that tracks the health care system. “When Democrats talk about universal coverage more than health care costs, they are playing to the dreams of activists

Sanders’ office responds that the Vermont senator’s “Medicare for All” plan would solve both the coverage and cost problems for individual Americans. Medical care would be provided with no deductibles or copays. No one would be uninsured or underinsured.

“The simple answer is that our health care system becomes more unmanageable for more and more Americans every year,” Sanders spokesman Keane Bhatt said in a statement. “This is not a system that needs a few tweaks. This is a system that needs a complete overhaul.”

But other countries that provide coverage for all and are held up by Sanders as models for the U.S. don’t offer benefits as generous as he’s proposing. If he is elected president, there’s no way of telling how his plan would emerge from Congress, or even whether something like it could pass.

Four other 2020 Democrats are cosponsors of Sanders’ bill: Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Trump is talking about big changes. His administration is seeking to have federal courts declare the entire Obama-era health care law unconstitutional, jeopardizing coverage for 20 million people, jettisoning protections for patients with preexisting conditions, and upending the rest of the 970-page statute, now nearly 10 years old.

The president says there’s nothing to worry about. Earlier this summer Trump told ABC News that he was working on a plan that would provide “phenomenal health care,” protect people with preexisting conditions, and would be “less expensive than `Obamacare’ by a lot.”

Fraudulent filing demands continue, state warns Potentially misleading notices request fee for third party to file business documents STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office is again alerting small business owners about more potentially misleading notices requesting an extra fee for a third party to file business documents.

According to a news release, the Secretary of State’s Office has continued to receive reports about third parties sending additional deceptive and misleading solicitations to Colorado businesses. The Colorado secretary of state maintains an easy-to-use online filing system for businesses. Use of a third party to complete filings with the secretary of state is not required.

The newest versions of these solicitations offer to obtain a “Certificate of Good Standing” or a “Certificate of Existence” from

the Secretary of State’s Office for a fee. Any business can download a Certificate of Good Standing for free from the secretary of state’s website at www.sos.state.co.us. In addition, the office does not offer anything called a Certificate of Existence.

Another misleading solicitation offers to file a “Statement Curing Delinquency” with the office to bring a business back into good standing. In addition to the required state filing fee, the form requires payment of a processing fee.

These misleading solicitations may appear similar to a government form, cite specific Colorado statutes and require a fee. They might contain your business entity’s actual business ID number and date of formation, as reflected in the secretary of state’s business records; contain a customer ID number that does not match a number given to you by a state or federal agency; contain a warning to make sure that the form’s instructions are followed exactly when completing the form; or contain a due date for your response.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office does not send these solicita-

tions, nor does it mail out business filing forms. Compliance with these notices is not required, the release said.

All business filings are filed online. Business owners can find instructions to directly file business forms at www.sos.state.co.us under the Business Organizations heading.

“Once again we are seeing people trying to profit off of misleading and unnecessary solicitations to business owners. Our office takes pride in having an easy-to-use and affordable business filing system, which is why we are alerting business owners about these third-party solicitations,” Secretary of State Jena Griswold said in the release.

To receive advance notice of when Periodic Reports, Trademark renewals, or Trade Name renewals are due, business owners can sign up online for free email notifications. Additionally, business owners can visit www.sos.state.co.us to verify their business status, file a form or obtain a free certification. law was “sold and passed on a litany of broken promises” and now “Democrats are proposing even more radical government takeovers of our health care system.”

As president-elect, Trump promised a health plan but never offered one upon taking office. Instead he backed bills from congressional Republicans, including one he called “mean” during a private meeting.

Trump says he might come out with his new plan within months, but that passing it would hinge on his getting reelected and Republicans winning back the House in 2020 while keeping control of the Senate.

That’s a bit of political deja vu.

Republicans controlled Washington back in 2017 when Trump, then-Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, tried for months to repeal and replace the Obama law, only to fail. The repeal effort was widely seen as contributing to Republicans losing the House in 2018.

Since then, many GOP lawmakers have tried to avoid the issue altogether.

Economist Sara Collins of the Commonwealth Fund, who led the study about underinsured Americans, says cost and coverage problems are intertwined. Citing the Democrats’ debate over Medicare for All, she says what’s missing from that discussion is that “one doesn’t have to go that far in order to improve the financial situation for millions of people — you can do that with much more targeted, incremental policies.”

One-ring scam calls back in circulation STAFF REPORT

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has seen a sudden spike in the number of complaints from residents receiving one-ring phone calls over their landline and cell phones, according to a news release.

The way the scam works, according to the release, is that the phone rings once, then abruptly cuts off before the person has a chance to answer, leaving only a missed call notification. The call is then followed by repeated calls that happen either in a short sequence or over the course of a day. The calls always display the same call-back number.

Victims who call back — either because they are curious about the number or because they think someone is trying to get through but keeps getting cut off — are put on hold by an operator before realizing that no one is coming on the line. The call is, in fact, an international call to a scammer, who collects long-distance fees billed to the victim. Fees include a connection charge of $35-$40 and fee-perminute charges.

The scam is not usually discovered until the victim gets a phone bill. Fortunately, the fees can be deducted if it is reported to the phone carrier when the bill comes in, the release said.

Other signs of a potential scam are that the caller ID number is prefaced by a three-digit number resembling an area code that could be construed as any U.S. code.

However, such calls often originate in other countries that also use three-digit area codes.

Other numbers also might be spoofed to appear local.

To remove charges, look for long-distance calls listed on the bill as premium service, international calls or a toll call. Report to the phone carrier the date of the scam, the details of the scam and the phone number that appears on the caller ID, and ask to have the charges deducted. If you do not anticipate needing international phone call service, request that your phone company remove the feature from your plan.

Any scams should be reported to the Federal Communications Commission at https://FCC.gov/ complaints.

Denver Zoo welcomes African lion cub Dad Tobias’s arrival to Predator Ridge in 2018 proves fruitful for species survival plan STAFF REPORT

The birth of an African lion cub this summer has given Denver Zoo a lot to roar about.

The cub, whose sex has yet to be determined, was born July 25 to mom Neliah, 7, and dad Tobias, 3, according to a news release. Animal care staffers say mom and cub are both healthy and active, and are bonding behind the scenes in Benson Predator Ridge.

Although the cub won’t make his or her public debut until later this summer, guests can still catch a glimpse of Neliah and her cub on the TV screens during the daily 2 p.m. “Pahali Ya Simba” lion demonstration at Predator Ridge, the release said.

“This is Neliah’s second time around as a mom, so we were confident she’d show all the correct behaviors with her new cub,” assistant curator of predators Matt Lenyo said in the release. “She immediately started grooming and nursing the cub, which is exactly what we hoped she would do.”

“Tobias hasn’t fathered any cubs previously, which makes his genetics important to the AZA lion population,” said Colahan, who also serves as the program leader for the African Lion SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) Program. “The fact that he’s already successfully mated with one of our females speaks to the work our lion team put in to make Tobias feel comfortable in his new home in such a short period of time.”

Neliah and the cub will stay behind the scenes for at least one to two months to give them time to bond and gradually introduce the cub to the rest of the pride. They’ll primarily stay in their den box, which the animal care provides to mimic the space Neliah would seek out to give birth in the wild.

Neliah will still have access to other holding areas behind the scenes, but the addition of the den box gives her a sense of security for her and her cub.

In the meantime, footage of Neliah and the cub in their den box will be shown on the TV screens in the Pahali Ya Simba building in Benson Predator Ridge.

Republicans recalling: GOP aims to unseat Dems Colorado is hotbed of attempts to undo Democratic victories

Republicans frustrated by losing their grip on political power in some Western states have begun deploying a new weapon: the recall.

Once reserved for targeting corrupt or inept elected officials, the recall has become part of the toolkit for Republicans seeking a do-over of election results. One GOP strategist in Colorado has put a name to it — “recall season.”

To be sure, Democrats also have used recalls, most notably in Wisconsin, where they tried unsuccessfully to oust then-Republican Gov. Scott Walker in 2012 over his actions to weaken public sector unions.

But Republicans have been mounting recall efforts against Democratic state lawmakers and governors at an unprecedented rate over the past two years in a handful of Western states, at the same time their political fortunes in those states have been declining.

In 2018, they recalled a freshman state senator in California as a way to temporarily undo a Democratic

supermajority.

The same year in Nevada, two Democratic lawmakers and an allied independent fended off recall attempts.

In Oregon, Republicans are pursuing a recall of Democratic Gov. Kate Brown, who was re-elected last year, after GOP lawmakers walked out of the Senate to try to block votes on climate change and education bills.

Colorado, where Democrats control both houses of the Legislature and the governor’s office, is seeing its highest level of recall activity since 2013, when Polis two Democratic lawmakers lost their seats for supporting gun control legislation and a third facing recall resigned.

Recall campaigns are targeting Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, two Democratic state House members and two DemoBuck crats in the state Senate.

Recall committees have been formed for other lawmakers, and the GOP’s top-ranking officials have encouraged the efforts.

U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, newly elected as chairman of the Colorado Republican Party, told supporters earlier this year, “We need to teach them

how to spell R-E-C-A-L-L.” Colorado recall proponents accused their targets of overreach on issues of gun control, climate change, taxes, sex education and the Electoral College — issues that many of the Democrats ran on during their successful campaigns.

Karen Kateline, a talk show host working on the Polis effort, insists that she and other Republicans aren’t abusing the original misconduct intent for recalls.

“Nobody is putting the brakes on these people,” she said of Democrats.

“It’s our constitutional right to recall,” insisted Nancy Pallozzi, a Republican from Lakewood who is leading an effort against state Sen. Brittany Pettersen — and who lost a state House race to Pettersen by 20 percentage points in 2016. “We can’t wait for new (GOP) candidates to be vetted for the next election. Three more years for the governor? And three more years for Brittany? No.” Democrats see the recalls as a blatant attempt to undo the results of the most recent elections, which produced a Democratic wave in several Western states.

Matt Harringer, spokesman for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, has a simple label for the Republicans pursuing the recall attempts — “sore losers.” The committee, which gets involved in state legislative races, has dedicated

$135,000 to help fight the Colorado recall attempts.

“Republicans are definitely on the decline in the West, and Colorado is the leader of that,” Harringer said. “We don’t think there’s a huge appetite to recall legislators who are doing what they said they would do.”

Nevertheless, Republicans see it as a worthy strategy. The Colorado Republican Party started months ago offering training sessions for what GOP consultant Ben Engen calls “recall season.”

Proponents can use the process to time an election and shape the electorate on their own terms, when most voters aren’t paying attention, said Engen, a Denver-based consultant who conducted some of those sessions.

For example, a petition drive can be timed to produce a special recall election during the winter holidays — taking advantage of lower turnout by unaffiliated voters who have helped turn Colorado, once a swing state, into Democratic-leaning territory, Engen said in an interview.

“There’s a drop-off in turnout from presidential to midterm elections, and the same thing between midterms and off-year elections,” Engen said. “Initiators of a recall can use the timing to maximize that enthusiasm gap.”

To Democrats, that’s essentially an admission that Republicans are using the recall not as a vehicle to oust corrupt officials, but rather as an attempt to game the system and flip seats they otherwise could not win in a regular election.

“The strategists see that a recall may be the best chance of winnowing down the electorate in such a way as to sneak through a seat,” agreed Jason Bane, a Denver-based Democratic operative. “They need something that goes under the radar for it to work.”

In 2018, California Democratic Sen. Josh Newman lost his seat in a recall election, ending Democrats’ supermajority. Recall proponents’ stated reason for the recall was Newman’s support for a gas tax increase, although he was one of dozens of lawmakers in both legislative houses to vote for it. Ironically, California voters reaffirmed the gas tax increase, which is now in effect, just months after voters recalled Newman in a lower-turnout primary.

“What made me a target of the recall wasn’t my vote per se, but was the opportunity to instead redo an election just months earlier, and on more favorable terms,” said Newman, who plans to run for his old seat in 2020, when turnout will be far higher.

It probably is appreciated by younger fans (than I am).

Professional golf is still safe, but just about everywhere else there are choreographed celebrations and selfaggrandizement galore.

I say: Score a touchdown and hand the ball to the referee. Don’t signal your buddies to meet you in the end zone, form a circle, and do a tribute to Don Cornelius.

Humble, apparently, went out with Uriah Heep.

Ramsey has been a professional football player for two years. He signed a $23.3 million rookie contract.

He is in the third year of the contract, and I guess he thinks $13.7 million simply isn’t enough of a reward for a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

Davis, the comedian who introduced Ramsey, yelled, “The man, the myth, Jalen Ramsey,” and a string of “He’s so good” jokes that were as funny as the Mueller hearing.

Last week, a friend sent me a YouTube of personalities who have died in 2019, and among them were Bart Starr, John Havlicek, Don Newcombe and Bill Buckner, none of whom arrived to camp in a hot air balloon.

Times change. Expectations change.

I never saw my favorite baseball player, Ted Williams, on “The Tonight Show.”

Megan Rapinoe, on the other hand, has been on everything except those airfryer oven commercials.

We are an entertainment-driven world. Everyone might be the next

reality television star, or the next nobody to be given a new car on “Ellen” for saving a parakeet’s life.

I do not underestimate the value of an ego. Without one, there would be no artists, musicians, actors, or opinion columnists.

But enough about me. Let’s talk about me.

As Newton said, there is always an equal and opposite, and that’s true in professional sports as well.

Some pro football players arrived to camp in modest vehicles, spoke modestly, and dressed modestly, and actually had something to say worth listening to.

But it’s the squeaky clowns that get the grease.

And those are the ones who get the press. Not the guy who shows up in a Dodge Dart and goes about his business.

Turn high-speed thinking into highly motivated action

here is certainly no shortage of ideas these days. As a matter of fact, we typically come up with more ideas than we really need. And the more ideas we generate, the more excited we get about putting them into practice.

What I am seeing more and more of is some very high-speed thinking.

The problem is that I am also seeing some low functionWINNING ing and less motivated doing.

WORDS Brainstorming is one of my very favorite exercises to participate in. Sometimes I find myself working through ideas on my own and challenging myself to come up with as many possible new ideas or solutions as Michael Norton possible. However, what I enjoy more is being part of a group and having others share their ideas and what they are thinking.

In most cases their contributions and line of thinking was something totally different than my own. And

usually much smarter.

The problem is that our thinking never stops, there is always one more idea or new approach we want to think through. One more shiny object to chase. This in turn creates the bigger problem, the “doing” actually does stop. As I explored this further, I found out some very interesting information. As much as some people love innovative thinking and creativity, coming up with vision and strategy, they don’t like to do the work that it takes to execute or implement the idea. Unless of course, it was their own idea.

The other thing people shared with me was that in many cases of a team meeting or brainstorming session, the meeting ended with no clearly defined next steps or assigned ownership. They may have had a powerful thought-provoking session, but when it was over, the excitement that was generated in the room evaporated with everyone’s exit. Or it was assumed that someone would simply take ownership.

So how do we turn high speed thinking into highly motivated action? The answer isn’t found in the

capturing them in some way. Keep revisiting those ideas from time to time as they may be brilliant, just not timely. They may become even more brilliant over time and with each new review or brainstorming session. To become a highly motivated person of action means we never allow our flow of new ideas become an excuse for not getting the job done. Accountability means we own it, or someone owns it.

As much as I enjoy spending time on an airplane filling up a page or two of ideas and strategy, I always go back and prioritize everything on the pages. The next step is to put dates, names of team members or people who can help, desired outcomes, and most importantly I write down an immediate next step.

Having a very clearly defined next step forces prioritization and accountability. Too often we look for the endgame or result. I

n the life of a child, a grandparent can play a pivotal role in their development, upbringing, and outlook on the world around them. The role of a grandparent is often versatile and ever-evolving as the child grows LIVING AND older and expresses different interests AGING WELL and needs. To children, grandparents can be mentors, chefs, historians, artists, coaches, confidants, playmates, storytellers and so much more.

Due to medical advances, people are Carson De Fries living longer and healthier lives, increasing the number of grandparents in the world and creating more opportunities for deeper and enduring intergenerational bonds between the generations. The impact and difference a grandparent can make in a child’s life is invaluable and can sometimes be underestimated due

to ageist beliefs. Grandparents should not underestimate the effect they can have on their grandchildren and the valuable role they play in their family.

One of the most meaningful and impactful things grandparents can do for their grandchildren is to share their family history. Listening to grandparents draw from their own personal experiences helps children get to know their grandparents on a deeper level, leading to stronger connections, while also teaching them family and cultural values, better understanding where they come from, and learning how to deal with challenges they may face in their own lives.

Stories passed down among the generations are often divided into three categories: directive, social bonding, and personal identity. Directive stories are often those that convey feelings of regret about past mistakes or missed opportunities, relaying the age-old adage of “don’t do what I did.” These help children learn from their elders’ past mistakes and how they can apply these lessons in their own lives. Social bonding stories revolve around happier memories, often centering around family traditions, celebrations and shared interests. These stories teach children family and cultural values and traditions. Finally, stories in the personal identity category help teach children where they come from and

help children not only figure out who they are but also what that means in the context of their family, culture and community.

The wonderful thing about storytelling is that it doesn’t have to be an isolated activity. These conversations between generations are often sparked by activities they’re doing together, whether it be passing down family recipes while baking together, sharing stories behind photographs while scrapbooking, or demonstrating how they coped with the loss of a baseball game while playing catch together.

So, if you’re wondering where to start with the types of stories or lessons you want to pass on to your grandchildren, it can be helpful to first determine what activities you’re both interested in and go from there.

As Elaine Reese, a psychologist from the University of Otago has said, “Family stories can be told nearly anywhere. They cost us only our time,

our memories, our creativity. They can inspire us, protect us, and bind us to others. So be generous with your stories, and be generous in your stories. Remember that your children may have them for a lifetime.”

How to nudge kids to make healthier choices

acation meal and snack times provide a time to encourage healthy habits and conversation. When wise snacking is added to three nutritious meals a day, adults can achieve the total recommended daily guidelines for healthy American children. Otherwise, the government guidelines can be a challenge.

This plan of including tasty fruit and vegetable snacks is especially useful if fruits and vegetables are often left on the plate or a big point of contention at mealtime.

A snack that satisfies hunger might be cut up fruits and vegetables like oranges, bananas, pears, apples, thin shavings of carrots, or frozen peas with just a small amount of cereal or crackers. Add a little cheese, yogurt,or small piece of turkey. Families may want to replace crackers with whole grain bread pieces, pockets or wraps and a little peanut butter, if there

is no allergy. Recommendations are five to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Three meals plus three nutritious snacks (including one at bedtime) equals meeting the daily nutritional guidelines.

Water or Milk Another suggestion is to provide water or milk during mealtimes and snacks rather than sugary juice or soda. Drinking water rather than soda is cheaper, caffeine and sweetener free, and will become a habit.

Nutritionists suggest families set a good example. Eat a small snack and drink water or skim milk with your children. Have your snack at the kitchen table rather in front of the TV, phone, or computer.

You may like to play a game like I Spy Something Red or some other color to spark conversation. Another variation is to count the number of items of a color you can find in a room.

Alphabet and category games are also conversation starters. How many words can you think of that start with the letter B? What animals can you think of that live on a farm?

You can teach young children to read numbers on nutrition labels. Four year olds can look for smaller number of sugar grams and become very aware of what they eat. These little food detectives can compare labels on boxed cereals, soup, processed meats, frozen meals, and macaroni and cheese to find the lowest amounts of sweeteners and salt.

Interest in wild edible plants is growing, Burger said. He leads the Denver Botanic Gardens’ new herbalism certificate program, which covers how to use a variety of wild and cultivated plants for health and medicine.

Burger, like Armstrong, is tied into the flourishing community of urban foragers in the Denver area. There’s a lot of activity in the subculture these days, Burger said, with classes around the metro area filling up quickly.

“I think people are starting to experience a shift in their vision, and are realizing natural is the way to go,” Burger said. “We’re starting to move past our diets of overly processed foods. It’s empowering to feed yourself or heal yourself from things in your landscape. These are things our ancestors knew, and they still work today.”

ost people would look at a backyard filled with weeds and see a problem. Kate Armstrong sees a feast.

Armstrong is an urban forager — someone versed in wild edible and medicinal plants of the urban environment. She leads nature walks and seminars that teach people a new way to look at the plants in their midst.

“People are astonished when they find out how much food is all around us,” Armstrong said. “Nature isn’t here to hurt us, it’s here to give us everything we need.”

Indeed, in the course of a short stroll through a Lakewood back yard, Armstrong pointed out dozens of plants growing in sidewalk cracks or along fences with uses ranging from salad greens to treating toothache.

There are very few toxic plants in our region, Armstrong said. Most plants are technically edible, it’s just that most don’t taste very good.

For novice foragers, though, Armstrong recommends a few highly common — and highly tasty — plants that abound throughout the Denver area.

There’s purslane, a low-growing weed with thick leaves and meaty stems, which can be eaten raw in a salad, fried in stir-fry, used as a soup thickener, or pickled.

Also abundant is mallow, a roundleafed weed that also makes a good snack when eaten raw, but also provides chewy seedpods that Armstrong calls “cheeses.” The stems can be roasted and eaten like pretzel sticks, she said, and the bigger leaves can be used as mini-serving trays for hors d’oeuvres.

Dandelion greens are best eaten raw, Armstrong said, and are excellent for detoxing the body.

Even bindweed, the bane of so many gardeners and lawn lovers, produces tiny white flowers with a delicate, floral taste that make an elegant garnish in a salad, Armstrong said.

Only a couple plants common in our region are poisonous, Armstrong said. One is hemlock, which grows in moist soil and produces spindly, wispy leaves that are hard to tell apart from carrot tops. The other is death camas, which looks similar to wild onion or wild garlic, but doesn’t have their characteristic savory odor.

A more common problem, Armstrong said, is herbicides and pesticides. Urban foragers should try to ensure that the place they’re gathering from hasn’t been sprayed to keep weeds and bugs down, she said.

That’s easy in your own back yard, but when foraging along roadsides or other wilder places, a key is to watch out for areas with monocultures — where only one type of plant is abundant. That’s often a sign that

sprays are in use.

The safest bet, Armstrong said, is to let your own yard go wild, which will also help it become a haven for pollinators and other wildlife.

“This can be a really fun hobby, and a great way to reconnect with nature,” Armstrong said. “And, who knows? If push comes to shove, it’s knowledge that could come in handy.”

Hit the trails Beyond the back yard, Colorado provides all sorts of edible goodies, said Blake Burger, a horticulturist with the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Spruce tree tips are high in vitamin C, Burger said, and make a tasty tea, or an addition to herb butters or marinades for fish and chicken.

Currant berries are plentiful in the region, Burger said, and make delicious syrups and jams.

Rose hips, the pink or red seedpods left behind after the flower dies, are also high in vitamin C and make a distinctive sour, floral tea.

It’s important to harvest wild edibles ethically and consciously, Burger said. As a rule of thumb, try not to gather more than 10% from a single

Do it right While Burger and Armstrong said the best place to forage is on land you or someone you know owns, so you can be sure of herbicide use, it’s possible to forage in other environs.

There’s no specific rule against gathering wild edibles in most of the parks in the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, said Skot Latona, who manages South Platte Park in Littleton. It’s against the rules to gather in South Platte Park itself, though.

While gathering a few berries or leaves isn’t going to get you busted, Latona said, “the behavior would be judged on observed damage to park property. Don’t go digging up roots, disturbing soil or removing entire species.”

Wild edibles are everywhere in South Suburban properties, said Victoria Sutton, an interpreter at South Platte Park, including wild asparagus, chokecherries and wild plums.

But, she said, consider your impact on your fellow animals when you forage, Sutton said.

“It’s fun to take a nibble here and there, but those plants can be a matter of life and death for wildlife in our area,” Sutton said. “Don’t go hauling basketfuls of material out of parks.”

Even for those not hitting the trails, there should be lots to munch on this year in back yards alone, Burger said.

“It was a wet spring, and plants are delayed in their growth, but strong” Burger said. “If you’re going to get into urban foraging, this is a good year for it.”

Gary Allan was the headlining concert at the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo this year, where he was set to entertain crowds on Aug. 3. Allan has released five No. 1 country music hits, including “Every Storm Runs Out of Rain,” and has sold more than 8 million albums throughout his career since his debut in 1996.

Allan spoke to Colorado Community Media about his show in Castle Rock, his inspiration and what’s to come with his next music launch.

Is this your first time performing in Castle Rock? What are you most looking forward to about performing here?

Colorado is beautiful and I love playing in this area. I don’t think we have played in Castle Rock specifically, but we have played the Denver area several times over the years. We even shot the “Watching Airplanes” video in the Denver area.

What can people expect when seeing you in concert? What is the experience like?

Our shows are an energetic, rowdy party. I like the audience on their feet and singing along. I went to a show a few years ago and the artist played for two hours and never played his hits. It made me stop and think about our set list and how I did not want the fans walking away feeling like that. We now do the hits, a few fan favorite album cuts and a few news songs. Hopefully, the fans leave excited and still wanting more.

What is your inspiration behind your music and why are you passionate about performing?

I grew up listening to traditional country music – Merle, Buck, Johnny, Waylon, Willie, etc. We had music playing in the house all the time and also had instruments and amps sitting out in our living room.

My dad thought if they were out where we could see them, we would

play them. He was correct and I played every day. When I was a teenager, my dad, brother and I had a band, The Herzbergs, and we played around Southern California. I knew early on that music is what I wanted to do for a living. Being onstage is my passion and I make music so that I can play it live. I can’t imagine not doing that.

When will you release new music? What can people expect from the next album that may differ from your past work?

I’ve been working on new music for a while now and hope to have something new out soon. Every album I make represents where I am in life at that time, so this one will reflect the same. I’m in a really good place and I think the music will represent that.

What do you enjoy specifically about performing at county fairs? Why are you looking forward to the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo?

County fairs are the heart of America. People come out for the rides, the fair food, the games and then end the night at the show. You typically have a great audience at the fairs and that makes it fun to play them.

First responders make impactful trip for D-Day Marking 75 years since battle sends local men home with life lessons

Lt. Tommy Barrella, of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, vividly remembers his trip to France with the Colorado Emerald Society Pipe Band in June, where the musicians helped mark 75 years since the battle called DDay began. There, the group of nearly 30 police and firefighters performed at more than a dozen remembrance ceremonies scheduled for the milestone anniversary.

As the band went from one event to the next, they saw local residents waving American flags in recognition of Americans’ role within the Allied troops before, during and after June 6, 1944, when soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II. By the battle’s end, an estimated 10,000 Allied troops were killed, wounded or missing.

Barrella, a base drummer in the band, was struck that decades later people from a different country took time to honor Allied soldiers. For others on the trip, it was a lesson in humility and respect for veterans. One thing they had in common — weeks later each were still beaming with pride and gratitude at having gone on what they called a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He recently closed 30 years with South Metro Fire Rescue and is now fire chief for Front Range Fire Rescue in Weld County.

West helped lead the trip, which included personnel from South Metro, the Castle Rock, Arvada and Adams County fire departments and the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. Band members left May 29 and returned home June 10, arriving first in Frankfurt, Germany before traveling throughout the region and ending in Paris.

“It was definitely not a tourist trip at all, which was fine. That’s not what we were there for,” said Castle Rock

The band traveled to locations widely known, and those that aren’t.

That included the Brittany American Cemetery in St. James, France. World War II veterans told West they referred to Brittany as “the forgotten cemetery,” because most people visit Omaha Beach when in the area.

The 28-acre Brittany cemetery is where 4,405 war dead are laid to rest.

Most died in the Normandy and Brittany campaigns of 1944, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

On June 7, the band traveled to Omaha Beach, and the following day played at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, where paratroopers unintentionally landed during D-Day. The local church is known for the story of paratrooper John Steele, made famous by the film “The Longest Day.” Steele landed on the church steeple and became trapped there as other paratroopers were shot from the sky.

Steele hung from the church for hours until German soldiers captured him.

He later escaped and survived the war, according to The Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mere-Eglise.

Gallegos, West and Barrella all pointed to this stop as one of the most memorable moments of the trip. As the band played “Amazing Grace” during a performance, something unusual happened. The crowds, estimated in the thousands, began to sing with them.

“The people in the square were singing louder than we could play,” Gallegos said. “That gave me goosebumps.”

West said the trip was meaningful for everyone, but particularly those with a personal connection.

“A number of our band members had relatives that fought on D-Day as well as the other battles around that time in World War II,” he said. “Including one of my bass drummers from Adams County that actually found the grave of his father’s cousin.”

Most impactful for West was meeting veterans who fought during D-Day and hearing their firsthand accounts of the battle.

“What struck me about their stories was that most of them had volunteered to go to war at age 16, 17,” Gallegos said. “They had to beg their parents to sign off the military stuff and they actually had to get permission from the schools.”

beaches, rolling green hills and a resort-like town where children built sand castles by the ocean — a town that might have been a tourist destination were it not for the devastating history, Gallegos said.

Barrella imagined nurses in the middle of a war zone treating wounded, soldiers piling onto the shore from

boats, no better than sitting ducks, the injured sinking to the ocean floor, soldiers trying to scale cliffs, and recalled peering at 75-year-old craters that remain on the beach from “the massive battle that went on.”

“You think about what took place there. It’s surreal. It really is,” West said.

West said the trip reminded him to fervently honor World War II and D-Day veterans, whose time on earth is dwindling.

“They’re passing on in such a huge number right now,” West said.

“They’re that age.”

For Gallegos, the trip sparked a desire to keep on playing, and to keep honoring veterans’ sacrifices.

“I hope to still be playing by the 100th anniversary,” said the 38-year-old Gallegos. “I’d love to go back.”

“This year we are privileged to partner with the Elbert County sheriff, and this will give our residents a chance to meet the first responders and have a fun night.”

First responders from Elizabeth police and fire departments as well as the Elbert County Sheriff ’s Office will be in attendance. Dozens of responders from all agencies worked together during the blizzard that hit the county in March, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded. The tribute will allow those who were stranded to meet the first responders who helped them and thank them personally.

“This year our first responders did an amazing job during the huge bomb cyclone. It was a huge crazy event because we got hit the hardest,” said Gerczynski. “It was a ton of work and a lot of sleepless nights. They were all amazing and this is definitely the year to give back and say thank you to them.”

Activities will include complimentary tacos, pizza, snacks and wine, all donated by local businesses. The musical duo We Are Madeleine will perform, and bouncy houses and a coloring station for kids will be available, along with emergency vehicle tours.

Gerczynski encourages employees or volunteers from any first responder agency in the county to attend and be recognized.

“We are inviting anyone from admin to firefighters themselves, to volunteers,” said Gerczynski. “We want everyone to get recognized.”

Elbert County Sheriff Tim Norton said he’s proud of his deputies, and appreciates the opportunity for them to be recognized.

“It is always great to hear when the public/community does special events to support first responders,” said Norton. “I am very proud of my deputies. They work long hard hours to protect our citizens and deserve to be honored. This is a great event and I love that all Elbert County first responders can enjoy the event together.”

Courtland Sutton hasn’t been the star of training camp like he was last year with a daily diet of highlight reel catches on deep fade routes, and the Denver Broncos are glad about that.

Sutton is working on becoming an all-around receiving threat in Rich Scangarello’s new offense, so he’s running all the intermediate routes, not just the deep posts where he’d leap over DBs for impressive catches.

“This offseason that was one big thing I wanted to work on, was being able to run every route on the route tree,” Sutton said, adding he doesn’t want to “just be a guy that’s known for going deep on the outside.

“That’s still something I have in my arsenal, but I want to be able to

run all those routes so that it can set up those big-shot plays.”

So, the spectacular has been replaced by the steady this summer.

I can get in and out of any route and that’s one thing I’m just really trying to incorporate into my game.”

Governor names new Colorado Poet Laureate STAFF REPORT

Colorado’s new poet laureate said he plans to widen poetry’s reach by visiting every corner of the state and connecting with people through poetry.

“I believe that my ability to impact and/or shape culture lives most-authentically in my connection to people through art,” Bobby LeFebre said in a news release. “I am invested in cultural change. Poets are always at the forefront of influencing and changing culture, and before we see large-scale social or political change, it is the heart and soul of issues that change first.”

LeFebre was named by Gov. Jared Polis as the new Colorado poet laureate, succeeding Joseph Hutchison.

“Bobby LeFebre has an amazing ability to empower and connect communities through the wisdom of his words; that is why we are confident he will make a fantastic Poet Laureate,” Polis said in the news release. “He embodies the spirit of a ‘Colorado for All’ where everyone is included. I know he will be a strong advocate for the arts and art education as a way to bring us together.”

LeFebre is an award-winning writer, performer, and cultural and social worker with “indigenous roots in the San Luis Valley that predate statehood.”

LeFebre serves as a commissioner for the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, fellow of the Intercultural

Leadership Institute, and an advisory board member of the Latino Cultural Arts Center and many other cultural organizations, including the Clyfford Still Museum and La Raza.

As a co-founder of Cafe Cultura, he also produces Interfest, an arts and ideas festival “for liberationists to radically engage, boldly express and joyously unify as a community.”

The poet laureate position was created to promote an appreciation of poetry in Colorado and to honor outstanding Colorado poets, the news release said.

The poet laureate serves as an active advocate for poetry, literacy, and literature by participating in readings and other events at schools, libraries, literary festivals and the state Capitol.

The poet laureate will also provide the governor with an annual account of the impact and success of the Colorado poet laureate program and prepare a poem for the opening of the legislative session upon request.

Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book and Colorado Creative Industries jointly support the honorary position, providing a $2,000 honoraria and up to $2,000 in travel expenses related to public presentations for each of the four years of the term.

‘Cutthroat Kitchen’ winner hired by Laszlo Hotel Leah Eveleigh will take on the role of executive chef of the Laszlo’s three restaurants

Leah Eveleigh will take over as executive chef for three of the five restaurants moving into the Laszlo Hotel, including Martinis on the Half Shell, Rick’s Prime Steak and Seafood and the Upper Deck, a sports bar and grill.

A former “Cutthroat Kitchen” champion and local private chef has been hired as the Laszlo Hotel’s executive chef in charge of its three restaurants.

Leah Eveleigh, of Highlands Ranch, will oversee all cooking operations at downtown Parker’s coming boutique hotel, including for the hotel’s built-in restaurants: Rick’s Prime Steak and Seafood, Martinis on the Half Shell and The Upper Deck. Eveleigh runs a private catering business serving mostly Filipino cuisine. Eveleigh moved to Colorado from the Philippines about 20 years ago.

“There’s no Filipino food around here. I have clients say ‘Leah, I can’t afford to have you cater all the time.

Where can I get your food?’ That’s what I’m excited about,” Eveleigh said. “I’m in my happy place so you can come now and I can cook for you.”

The Laszlo Hotel is nearing completion. According to hotel officials, they

will begin hiring staff in the coming weeks and already have different events planned for the fall season and a New Year’s Eve bash.

The Laszlo will cover a variety of cuisines, from seafood to breakfast burritos; oysters to burgers; draft beer to hand-made martinis. Eveleigh hopes to sprinkle in Filipino favorites alongside the traditional steakhouse classics and fan-favorite pub foods.

Eveleigh will serve Filipino eggrolls as an appetizer and an “ahi tuna tower,” which Eveleigh said fits her vision for the hotel of being a place to

find trendy foods.

“Every day, it’s going to be like `Wow. That’s something that’s unique,’” Eveleigh said. “It’s going to be the place to be…It’s going to be awesome for Parker because there’s nothing else like it.”

The restaurants will have standard menus — with steak, seafood, burgers — accompanied by special seasonal menus. Some of Eveleigh’s unique Filipino creations can be found there.

The Laszlo Hotel will include special off-menu items as well for those in the know.

“Laszlo is a lifestyle. It is an event,” said Candice Coleridge, the Laszlo’s director of food and beverage. “Every time you visit us, from the moment you walk in, we’re not just a place you go stay or go dine or go experience, and that’s really important. I want something that passes your table and you say ‘I want that. I need to be a part of that.’”

Eveleigh competed and won season two, episode six of “Cutthroat Kitchen.” The reality cooking show, hosted

by Food Network’s Alton Brown, pits four chefs against each other for a cash prize. The four competitors are handed $25,000 each to use as they wish. They can either use the money to improve their dishes or sabotage their counterparts. They compete in three rounds to finally determine a winner, who walks away with whatever is left of the $25,000.

Eveleigh hopes to make the Laszlo a trendy place for people from all over the area. But, she said, she took this job because she wants to share her creations with her neighbors in the community.
