Imagine if you will the classic cowboy exit: Horse, check; saddle, check; woman bravely holding back tears, check; blinding sunset to ride into, check; custom-made hat to brave elements — whoa! Obviously, this cowboy was remiss and failed to visit the Powder River Hat Shop in Elizabeth before attempting his dramatic exit.

After 16 years in his shop and 30 years in a 100-year-old trade, Brook Biddle makes at least one custom hat a day at Powder River Hat Shop. Even as a child his passion for hats manifested in a penchant for wearing anything that fit, including but not limited to milk cartons. With the passage of time and a mirror, Biddle’s hat choices evolved and his one-man assembly line now pumps out customized hats generally made from the beaver-felted bodies (hat shells) he receives from a factory.

John B. Stetson discovered that beaver fur and European hare fur were the best furs because the fibers interlock tighter, and Biddle agrees wholeheartedly.

County abates fees, tax for Independence Officials say move benefits citizens by shifting big costs to developers

In the 2018 audit report released at the June 26 Board of County Commissioners meeting, it was revealed that the BOCC approved an abatement of Elbert County impact fees, traffic analysis zone fees and all use tax generated in connection with the Independence development being built on Hilltop Road north of Elizabeth. The combined fees total approximately $5 million that the developer, Craft Companies, will not have to pay to the county.

The abatement, according to County Commissioner Chris Richardson, was created to save taxpayers money, and not to give the developer a free ride.

“This agreement allows the county to protect taxpayers, reduce

risk on the county and keep costs down,” said Richardson. “This is how development pays for itself. We don’t get to take money from them and keep it.”

When a new home is Richardson built in Elbert County, property owners pay approximately $5,000 between impact and traffic analysis zone fees, which the county uses to create infrastructure for the property, including building roads. According to Richardson, the cost for one mile of road currently runs about $1 million. The cost is subject to increases due to inflation, or an increased price of oil, which impacts the price of asphalt.

In exchange for the abatement, Craft Companies is obligated to create all infrastructure and roads for the Independence community, as well as improvements to surrounding roads, including County Road 158.

“We don’t do paving or build roads in the county, we contract that out,” said Richardson. “The developer, under this agreement, is required to make improvements to

158, including turning lanes, widening, and potentially repaving all the way out to 13. When the development reaches around 500 homes, they will be required to widen the road to four lanes. When that time comes, the cost of the project will cost them more than they retained.

We would be paying much more to have it done ourselves.”

Roads built by Independence developers must pass an acceptance inspection to ensure the quality of the work, and once completed the county will hold a bond from Craft Companies for two years, during which time Craft must make any repairs or improvements to the road. After two years, the road becomes property of the county and is subject to county maintenance.

According to Deputy County Manager Eileen Krauth, damage done to 115 during the construction of Independence will be corrected through the agreement.

“There is a concern that 115 is being torn up by heavy construction traffic,” said Krauth. “Part of the agreement is to put that road back together in a way that will meet the needs of the current subdivision.”

Volunteers needed for emergency responder workshop STAFF REPORT

Adult volunteers are needed to role play in simulated emergency situations for an upcoming training in Elizabeth.

Emergency responders from Elizabeth and surrounding areas will participate in a three-day training and exercise workshop provided by Louisiana State University’s National Center for Biomedical Research and Training/ Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education.

The training was developed to improve integration between law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services during active threat events.

Adults ages 18 and older are needed to role play on the final training day, Aug. 2. Participating volunteers will help support the community’s emergency responders and local schools, learn about a community’s emergency response, have fun and enjoy a free lunch. Volunteers will need to bring photo identification.

The training will occur from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Elizabeth High School, 34500 Co Road 13, in Elizabeth. Volunteers can sign up online at http://bit. ly/ESDEmergency, or call Shane Pynes, director of safety and emergency planning, at 303-646-1834.

Small business owners are being warned about potentially misleading notices requesting an extra fee for a third party to file business documents.

According to a news release, the Colorado Secretary of State’s office has received multiple reports of these potentially deceptive or misleading solicitations being sent to Colorado businesses. However, an online filing system for businesses is maintained by the Secretary of State’s office, and use of a third party to complete filings is not required, the release said.

According to the release, the misleading solicitation might: • Appear similar to a government form.

• Contain your business ID number and date of formation, as reflected in the Secretary of State’s business records.

• Include a customer ID number

that does not match a number given to you by a state or federal agency.

• Contain a warning to make sure that the form’s instructions are followed exactly when completing the form.

• Contain a due date for your response.

• Mention a periodic report.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office does not send these solicitations, according to the release, nor does it mail out business filing forms. Compliance with these notices is not required.

All business filings, including annual periodic reports, are filed online. The fee for filing the periodic report is $10. Business owners can find instructions to easily and directly file business forms on the Secretary of State’s website under the Business Organizations heading.

To receive advance notice of when Periodic Reports, Trademark renewals, or Trade Name renewals are due, business owners can sign up online for free email notifications.

A peek into opioid users’ brains as they try to quit Scientists turn to scanning in bid to find whether medications help beat addiction

Lying inside a scanner, the patient watched as pictures appeared one by one: A bicycle. A cupcake. Heroin.

Outside, researchers tracked her brain’s reactions to the surprise sight of the drug she’d fought to kick.

Government scientists are starting to peek into the brains of people caught in the nation’s opioid epidemic, to see if medicines proven to treat addiction, like methadone, do more than ease the cravings and withdrawal. Do they also heal a brain damaged by addiction? And which one works best for which patient?

They’re fundamental questions considering that far too few of the 2 million opioid users who need antiaddiction medicine actually receive it.

One reason: “People say you’re just changing one drug for another,” said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who is leading that first-of-its-kind study.

“The brain responds differently to these medications than to heroin. It’s not the same.”

Science has made clear that three medicines — methadone, buprenorphine and extended-release naltrexone — can effectively treat what specialists prefer to call opioid use disorder. Patients who stick with methadone or buprenorphine in particular cut their chances of death in half, according to a report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine that explored how to overcome barriers to that care.

Opioid addiction changes the brain in ways that even when people quit can leave them vulnerable to relapse, changes that researchers believe lessen with long-term abstinence.

Volkow’s theory: Medication-based treatment will help those damaged neural networks start getting back to normal faster than going it alone.

To prove it, she’ll need to compare brain scans from study participants like the woman who quit heroin thanks to methadone with active heroin users and people who are in earlier stages of treatment.

“Can we completely recover? I do not know that,” Volkow said.

But with the medications, “you’re creating stability” in the brain, she said. And that helps recondition it to respond to everyday pleasures again.

The challenge now is finding enough people willing, and healthy enough, to have their brains scanned for science at the same time they’re struggling to quit.

Addiction is a brain disease, “not a choice, not a personality flaw, not a moral failing,” said Dr. Jody Glance, an addiction specialist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who hopes NIDA’s brain scans will help overcome some of the barriers and improve the public health response to the opioid crisis.

mood and emotional responses to addiction better than methadone, for instance, because of subtle differences in how each medicine works. She especially wants to test people who relapse, to try to spot any treatment differences.

Methadone and buprenorphine are weak opioids, the reason for the misperception that they substitute one addiction for another. In slightly different ways, they stimulate the dopamine system more mildly than other opioids, leveling out the jolts so there’s no high and less craving. People may use them for years.

Naltrexone, in contrast, blocks any opioid effects.

It’s a tough sell Volkow’s team has screened more than 400 people who expressed interest in the study, but have found only about three dozen potential candidates who qualify, seven of whom have enrolled so far.

The main problem: Study participants must have no other health problem that might affect the brain’s chemistry or functioning. That rules out people who use medicines such as antidepressants, and those with a range of health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Volkow said it’s worth the struggle to find such rare volunteers if before-and-after scans wind up showing truly different looking brains as people get treated.

“You should be able to see it with your eyes, without having to be an expert,” she said.

Ex-teacher who took ‘upskirt’ videos sentenced Steven Jenkins given four years of probation

The ex-teacher accused of filming inappropriate videos of women and girls — including students, parents, teachers and school administrators — has been sentenced to four years of probation that includes treatment for sexual offenders. He must also register as a sex offender and will have a permanent felony on Jenkins his record.

Steven Michael Jenkins, 56, was arrested in 2017 after students re-

ported seeing him use his phone to secretly film up the clothing of girls at Renaissance Secondary School in Castle Rock. Jenkins worked in an instructional position at the school.

He previously worked as a math teacher at Castle View High School and was an educator for approximately 30 years.

Investigators later found videos, often referred to as “upskirt” videos, of multiple women and girls on Jenkins’ phone that were filmed without their knowledge.

He was charged with multiple counts of invasion of privacy and pleaded guilty in April to one count of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification. He entered the guilty plea as part of a plea agreement in exchange for the dismissal of his other charges.

In addition to registering as a sex offender, Jenkins will never be

allowed to work as a teacher again.

He had voluntarily surrendered his teaching license earlier in the case.

No victims spoke at the July 8 hearing but they did submit statements to the court and have attended previous hearings where they offered emotional testimony, lambasting Jenkins for manipulating his position of trust and stealing the innocence of students.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Kelley Dziedzic said July 8 the plea agreement accomplished many of victims’ wishes but had requested District Court Judge Theresa Slade include incarceration in her sentence.

Slade opted for probation only, but the sentence included several stipulations.

It prohibits him from contacting his victims or any minors. Jenkins is required to undergo drug and al-

cohol treatment if necessary. Other provisions determine what type of phone he can have and limit his access to the internet, computers or cameras.

Dziedzic said the number of victims and the length of time Jenkins’ filmed them before being discovered added to the impact of his actions.

When Jenkins was arrested investigators found approximately 20 videos of an estimated 10 women and girls.

Jenkins was an admired and trusted teacher, according to multiple people who spoke during the hearing, but he’d “essentially cashed in on his reputation for trustworthiness” and “weaponized trust” in order to film his victims, the prosecutor said.

He uses European hare, a much coarser fur, for his starter hat and beaver for his best custom hats. Beaver fur is his first choice because it sheds water, is pliable, less coarse and thus the fibers interlock tighter than other furs.

It takes a full 110 steps to transform a beaver pelt into a body Biddle can customize for clients. Once he receives the bodies made to his specifications (amount of beaver fur, etc.) he manipulates it, shaping the crown and the brim along with sizing the hat according to the size and shape of the customer’s head measured by a special tool, a conformer, and attaches a custom band. The finished product blends the client’s needs with Biddle’s 30 years of experience and talent in identifying the best look to complement the customer’s personality and style.

However, the yin and yang of the creative process can be challenging.

Biddle’s instincts born of years fitting hats on heads of all shapes and sizes can conflict with the client’s idealized expectations. As Biddle explains: “All have a perception of what they should look like in a hat when they put it on and if it does not fit the perception right away, the hat is wrong.” If asked to make a

VOICES Well, as it turns out, there is an ‘I’ in team

T

here’s only one of me (you’ll be happy to know), but from now on I want to be thought of as Team Craig.

Calling yourself or yourselves a team is the latest and the greatest, and I don’t want to be left out.

My dentist and her hygienists are a QUIET team.

DESPERATION My car is repaired by a team.

A team made my pizza last week, and a team will check my eyesight when I have my annual exam.

There’s a home improvements and Craig Marshall repairs outfit that calls itself a team.

Smith When a word becomes a movement, I want to ride it until I get saddle sores.

If I had to stretch things, I could say my echo and my shadow are

Team Craig teammates.

Maybe you remember the Ink Spots and their great song, “We Three.”

This (for once) is a true story.

When I gave my students a weekend ink drawing project, I told them to listen to the Ink Spots.

One kid thought I meant I wanted them to listen to the ink spots, and he was serious.

There are, in fact, teams. Every high school and college in the State of Colorado has a number of teams, and they compete against teams from other schools and states.

I have a harder time thinking of a guy wearing grease for an aftershave and leaning into the engine of my car to adjust the carburetor as a member of a team. But it sounds good.

I know some writers have ghost writers and editors and research people, but at Team Craig it’s really just Craig.

Unless you count Harry.

And why not? He inspires a num-

ber of columns each year, and he’s practically a dependent.

If you are a dog owner, you know what I mean. His veterinarian bills alone? Get out of here.

In her own way (discretion will limit details), Jennifer plays for Team Craig too.

But at the end of the day, the bottom line (to frolic in the gruel of two worn-out phrases) shows that Team Craig is comprised of one team member, who taps away with the heartfelt belief, “Everything we do is all about you.”

That’s the actual wording on a local team’s monthly newsletter.

And it brings with its treacle another word that is making the rounds.

“About.”

Check it out, brothers and sisters, and count the number of times in a day you read or hear that something is “about” something, as in it’s “all about you.”

It’s a word of equivocation be-

tween the point being made and the punch line.

“This column is all about the sarcasm.”

I could never write that sentence without the quotation marks.

Or this: “In our hotel, it’s all about clean sheets.”

For what it’s worth (Buffalo Springfield, 1967), I believe in getting it said, with honesty and decency.

But, you know, there’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear. But I will say this: It’s harder to take it out on a team than it is to take it out on one sarcastic journalist.

When the time comes and you want to lower the boom on me, you will just have to see if you can find someone at Team Craig who is willing to listen.

Making the most of those lazy days of summer

T

he other day I posted something on social media that included a brief reference to those lazy days of summer.

The post was really about something else, and a reminder that we should enjoy our lazy days of summer, take time for vacations, and relax when we WINNING can. However, we WORDS should also stay inspired and motivated and avoid the lazy days of summer hangover and doldrums.

You know that feeling, right? Those days where it might be beautiful and sunny and we wish Michael Norton we were hiking, biking, golfing, fishing, at the lake or at the beach. Our focus on work or other projects seems to drift into the distance as we daydream about being outside. Or maybe it’s those other days where it is so hot, so humid and sticky, and we just feel drained and

tired and we settle in to our air-conditioned homes, cars, or anywhere we can find relief from the heat.

Those are the days where our energy levels bottom out.

Mondays and Fridays seem to be the hardest days as we look to starting our weekend early or extending our weekend beyond Sunday. I have one friend, Chris, who likes to refer to his week as a “Thur-Mon,” as he starts on Thursday and goes through Monday. And there are others who save up their vacation time and PTO days and take these extended weekends during the summer instead of taking a full week or two here and there.

It’s the “getting back to work” part, or “getting back into the work mood and mode” that we struggle with, isn’t it? At least that was some of the feedback I have received after my post. It is almost like we need a vacation from our vacation, a vacation from our weekend, or we just need to find our summer motivation, energy, and inspiration.

daydream, I try and let my creativity come to life. I recognize that I am daydreaming or wandering a bit, so I intentionally start to dream about my goals and dreams. When we know where it is we want to go, who and where we want to be, and what we want to have in life, we can usually fight through the lazy days of summer, or in my friend Chris’ case, the crazy days of summer. We allow ourselves the rest and relaxation we deserve, we enjoy those moments of daydreaming and easy peaceful feelings, but we remember our purpose and passion, and our “why” so that we maintain our momentum.

Tom Ziglar, in his book “Choose to Win,” talks about the importance of having a “why,” understanding our “why,” and having our internal compass aligned with our true north.

Mid-year outlook as expansion sets length record

H

ere we are, just six months away from the beginning of the next decade. Just the year 2020 sounds like something from outer space. Oh well, it’s just a number. The bigger question is how to plan for it and what to expect.

While no one can predict the future, it FINANCIAL helps to understand where we are in the STRATEGIES present. The big headlines overseas for the first half of this year centered around China, Iran and Brexit. Stateside, the news was all about the Federal Reserve. This brings me to the Patricia Kummer obvious points that make this cycle unlike any other: the longest and most global.

This current economic cycle is now the longest U.S. expansion in history, pushing on the 11th year.* I believe that the length comes from

the very slow growth both here and abroad that have seemed inherent in this cycle. Being part of the global economy means it can be difficult for one country to grow at a significant pace if other countries are lagging.

Here at home, we are dealing with a shift in Fed policy, from rate increases to potential rate cuts. This can be construed as the economy not doing as well or as an opportunity to refinance debt (such as a mortgage) at a lower rate. The likely policy shift could add a fair amount of volatility to the financial markets depending on what else is going on in the world at the same time.

The base case for the second half of this year is that Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth is slowing on a global scale but we expect soft landing levels around the 2% to 3% range. The Fed will likely cut interest rates and there will hopefully be a trade deal with China.

The major unknowns remain China and the tariff talks and the Fed’s

course reversal to easing. Recent Wall Street chatter is that these two scenarios appear to be priced into the markets, which has resulted in a healthy run so far this year. Therefore, if the United States is unable to reach a reasonable trade agreement with China around lowering tariffs, or if the Fed does not cut rates, then we could see weakness in the equity markets.

If everything falls into place, and there are no surprises (such as potential conflict with Iran) then our longest running bull market may continue a bit longer. Investors should expect continued volatility around the Fed, China and Iran, as well as a slowing of GDP output.

We may very well still be dealing with some of these issues when 2020 rolls in, and with it, an election year.

It may be time to update your fi-

Action aficionados achieve Opportunities abound to enjoy the great outdoors off the ground

C

oloradans are known for their love of outdoor adventures.

Traditionally, these activities take place on solid ground.

However, the Denver metro area also offers plenty of high-adrenaline experiences that get participants off the ground and into the air.

Soaring above Golden Paragliding is kind of like sitting in a lawn chair in the sky, said David Hach, co-owner of Paraglide Tandem, a Golden-based company that serves Colorado residents and tourists.

“It really feels like we’re flying like a bird,” Hach said. “And the views are amazing.”

Paraglide Tandem started in 2013 and today, the Paraglide Tandem team is made up of eight instructors, all certified by the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association as tandem pilots.

The experience lasts about two hours, Hach said. The instructor will meet the client at about 10 a.m. — Paraglide Tandem flies in the morning when there’s no turbulence, Hach said — in the parking area at the base of Mount Zion, which is near the Chimney Gulch Trailhead off U.S. 6 in Golden. From the parking lot, the two take a five-to-10-minute walk to the launch site, which is near the Colorado School of Mines’ M on Mount Zion.

“Then we sit back, relax and watch the weather for a bit,” Hach said.

The instructor will then get the client geared up and they’ll do a practice launch. Then, the two step into the 42-square-meter glider — the guest in front and the pilot in the back.

“We wait for a nice gust of wind, and then we launch,” Hach said, adding there’s no free-fall involved. “We’ll soar around for as long as we can. And if they want, we’ll do tricks.”

Generally, a flight will last about five to 15 minutes, depending on conditions, Hach said.

“I love the reaction that everybody has,” he said. “They’re always surprised how smooth and mellow it is.”

Paragliding is a “risky sport,” Hach said, but Paraglide Tandem instructors are well-versed in the sport and they will only take people out “when conditions are perfect for a safe flight.”

Hach went paragliding for the first time on his fifth birthday in 1993.

“I’ve been hooked ever since,” he said. “It’s my passion and it’s fun to be able to share it with people.”

Get a rush on ropes course Compared to other experiences that get people off the ground, the ropes course at Adventure Golf & Raceway in Westminster is a safe way to challenge your physical abilities, while still getting that adrenaline rush.

“People enjoy the controlled environment,” said Allen Brown, the managing director of Adventure Golf & Raceway. The ropes course “gives them a way to get that rush without the potential to get hurt.”

The Adventure Ropes Course is a two-level course that offers 25 different challenges with varying degrees of difficulty. Perched above a giant maze made of constructed walls, the first level of the ropes course is about 10 or 12 feet off the ground, Brown said, and the second level is about 20 feet off the ground.

Challenges range from walking across tires to navigating a slackline.

People are harnessed in, and once

on the course, they choose their own path, Brown said.

“People tend to be really nervous when they first try it,” Brown said.

“But then, we see that they gain confidence and start to enjoy the interaction with the device. And then there’s some people who don’t want to come down.”

It takes about 30 minutes for a person doing it for the first time to complete the beginner challenges, Brown said.

The ropes course was originally at the former Heritage Square site — a tourist attraction near Golden that has since closed — and was installed at Adventure Golf & Raceway in 2016.

All sorts of people have enjoyed it since then, Brown said, including individuals who want to challenge themselves, families who want bonding time and groups for team building.

“The ropes course (and its challenges) pushes people to do things they’re not comfortable with at first,” Brown said. But in the end, “they enjoy trying something they haven’t done before.”

The Sky Trek is Castle Rock

Adventure Park’s newest attraction.

It features four levels — the top is 50 feet off the ground — and 120 different obstacles. The Sky Trek’s Ninja Warrior Experience features a course similar to NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” TV series, White said.

The Epic Adventure Tower is “the destination for your adrenaline junkie,” White said.

Among other features, it includes a 42-foot climbing wall, four rappelling stations and three different platforms, including the 75-foot Eagles Nest, which offers a harnessed freefall.

The Castle Rock Adventure Park opened in 2015 with the zipline tour.

The zipline tour provides an adrenaline experience that’s not too overwhelming, White said, but “it’s still a lot of fun flying through the air.”

The zipline tour takes about two to three hours to complete. There’s about a mile of hiking, which is split up among the 10 ziplines. Along the route, each line gets longer and faster.

People take the tour in small groups accompanied by a guide certified by the Association for Challenge Course Technology.

People enjoy different kinds of outdoor adventures that gives them a break from their normal, daily routines, White said.

“Most people’s day-in-and-day-out lives are spent on the ground,” he said. “Getting off the ground is inherently different. And you get to experience the season and the views — the best that nature can offer.”

Light is unifying theme in exhibit at museum Painter Jane Guthridge recalls how Colorado caught her eye after move from Midwest

In the introductory comments beginning a catalog of her works, painter Jane Guthridge speaks of sun and shadow and how she works to capture the changing patterns. Guthridge recalled moving to Colorado from the Midwest “30-ish years ago” and immediately being struck by patterns of light — and clouds that cast shadows.

She manipulates materials and light from various sources to create “light forms” that suggest the effects of sunlight in nature — manipulating translucent film, reflective surfaces and color.

Walking into her solo exhibit, “Play of Light: Works by Jane Guthridge” at the Littleton Museum through August 25, has an immediate effect on a visitor — what a happy space this is! Floating installations move gently,

At the gallery entrance is Guthridge’s installation “Suspended Light,” with a slender 120-inch rod holding airy, rounded, translucent shapes, strung on slender threads — their shifting shadows playing on a wall just behind them.

Step into the gallery past “Sus-

pended Light” to the right to find another intricately conceived installation called “Reflected Light: Littleton Museum.” Guthridge worked with Littleton Museum curators Moira Casey, Jennifer Hankinson and Kevin Oehler to install her works, adjusting lighting to reflect color, some mirrored surfaces — and of course, shadows — all constantly shifting.

the leaves of trees.” They are made from highly polished steel, painted on one side, with cut-out patterns. Metal plates are shaped so lighting penetrates each work, affecting reflections and shadows — within and on its host surface.

The catalog shows other iterations of this work at different locations, each distinctive and mesmerizing.

Guthridge has cumulative experience that lets her predict the effect when all the pieces are assembled and properly lighted. The “Reflected Light” for instance, especially changes with each location.

Framed works include precisely cut pieces of Dura-Lar translucent plastic sheeting layered over colorful encaustic and archival inkjet prints on mulberry paper (textured paper, handmade from mulberry bark, widely used by artists for prints, collages, watercolors and other artworks).

One can view the exhibit as individual pieces and as a cumulative, sunny, whole experience. Certainly, more than one visit is in order to process it!

Nuggets acquire forward from Thunder for draft pick Jerami Grant expected to cover multiple roles on court for Denver

Jerami Grant gives Denver another power forward who can do a little bit of everything.

The Oklahoma City Thunder obtained yet another first-round pick, which allows them to do a little bit of anything.

The Nuggets bolstered their front court by acquiring the 25-year-old Grant from the Thunder on July 8 for a 2020 first-round pick. ESPN first reported the deal.

tion for the Thunder, who are in line for at least four more assuming the blockbuster deal that sends Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers goes through. It would also give Oklahoma City the rights to as many as 13 first-round picks over the next seven drafts.

The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Grant is coming off a breakout season that saw him set career highs in points (13.6) and rebounds (5.2). He shot 49.7% from the field and 39.2% from 3-point range.

On the defensive end, he displayed his versatility by blocking 100 shots and recording 61 steals.

Originally a second-round pick by Philadelphia in 2014, Grant — the son of longtime NBA player Harvey Grant — has taken off since being sent to the Thunder in a 2016 deal.

“I think it’s one of the best things that could have happened to my

career, just getting traded here from Philly. Just the opportunity here,” he said at his exit interview in April. “It was an opportunity in Philly as well, but the opportunity here to play on a great team, play in a great organization like this, it was — I think it was huge for me and my career, just in my development. I’ve gotten so much better since I got here.”

One of his biggest supporters has been George, who’s about to be sent from Oklahoma City to the Clippers in a massive trade, and where he’s set to join forces with NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard once all the paperwork is straightened out.

“J.G. is one of those special players I think that you need on a team to make a team special,” George said before last season. “Every team needs that one guy that can do a little bit of everything, and J.G. is that guy. You

can plug J.G. in at any spot, and he’s going to come out with some special plays for us.”

The Nuggets are coming off a 54-28 season that earned them the No. 2 seed in the West behind All-Star big man Nikola Jokic. They haven’t made any major splashes this offseason.

Instead, they’re relying on team cohesion. That’s why they brought back forward Paul Millsap, who recently had his $30 million option picked up.

The team also agreed to a reported $170 million extension for point guard Jamal Murray.

Denver boasts a young nucleus that includes Michael Porter Jr., the No. 14 selection in 2018 who sat out last season as he recovered from another back surgery. Porter was set to suit up during the Summer League in Las Vegas before suffering a knee injury that is not considered serious.

Car club raises close to $10,000 for task force STAFF REPORT

The parking lot of the Parker Library bustled with activity at 6:30 a.m. June 9 as Parker Cruisers Car Club members began preparations for the 10th annual car show to benefit the Parker Task Force.

An hour later, entrants began to arrive hoping to find the premium parking spots for their muscle cars, classic cars, hot rods, pick-ups, Volkswagens and cars of nearly every vintage.

Ninety vehicles registered for the show, which was staffed by more than 30 volunteers and netted nearly $10,000 for the task force.

The Car Fest committee secured 23 sponsorships, which greatly increased proceeds from the event.

The Parker Task Force worked with Car Fest organizers to handle online registrations and other ad-

ministrative details.

“Handling the paperwork for the event was the easy job,” Steve Budnack, volunteer chairman of the Parker Task Force, said in a news release. “The task force appreciates the hard work that went into putting together such a successful car show with generous proceeds.

Thank you to the Parker Cruisers for your continued support.
