While riding his Harley-Davidson along the back roads of Colorado

during a heavy wind storm, Air Force veteran Glenn Weissel, coowner of Harmony’s Heart Coaching in Elbert, had an epiphany. Weissel, a certified life coach and equine assisted coach, along with his wife Ashara Morris, started Harmony’s Heart about seven years ago, and on that windy day as he focused to navigate his motorcycle safely, Weissel said he realized he needed to do more to help fellow veterans and

first responders suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. “It took strength of will, determination and a commitment to improve my riding skills to push my envelope in the environmental conditions,” said Weissel. “The vision of helping veterans and first responders was given to me as I rode. Health department may split into 2 offices Move would undo change made a decade ago BY TABATHA STEWART SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

During an upcoming July 22 meeting, the Elbert County Board of

County Commissioners will decide whether or not to reorganize the county’s public health program by separating it into two offices. Under the proposal, the Elbert County Department of Health and Human Services would become simply the Elbert County Department of Human Services, under the continuing leadership of Jerri Spear, while

some operations would move to a separate Elbert County Department of Health, led by Dwayne Smith, who is now administrator of public health. What exactly does that mean for the approximately 25,000 residents of Elbert County? SEE SPLIT, P11

On the heels of more data showing COVID-19 on the rise in his state, Gov. Jared Polis still scraped up a hopeful if worried tone in pushing Coloradans to turn the trajectory around. And he kept up the baseball metaphor he has used to convey where Coloradans stand — but this time he cast them as losing their grip on the game. “We’re in the sixth inning, and we’re actually down by a run here to the virus,” Polis said at a July 9 news conference. “It’s 6-5, the virus is beating us, but we’ve got runners on the corners and no outs. So, you know, we’re not down 10-to-zero like they are in Texas or Arizona. We’re down, and we just need to play ball here.” Clinging to the hope that Colorado won’t end up with a dire spike of COVID-19 like those two states — which have pointed to socializing at bars and nightclubs as a major source of their recent outbreaks — Polis pushed for more mask-wearing but stopped short of saying he’d favor a mandate, again banking on public buy-in rather than leaning on tighter restrictions.
