Elbert County homeowners who contested their property revaluation from the county assessor’s office and still disagree with the outcome have until the end of the business day on July 15 to file a petition with the County Board of Equalization. Appeals will go before a hearing officer, who will render a recommendation to the CBOE. The county mailed 13,682 revaluation notices, and according to Assessor Susan Murphy, 94 percent of the revaluations were uncontested. Revaluations were based on a collection period of 24 months from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2018.

“During the month of May, in our appeals process, we talked to a fair amount of taxpayers in Elbert county,” said Murphy.

Tattoo artist makes his mark in Kiowa Creative ability offers ways for clients to express their individuality

David Parks, owner of Comanche Street Tattoo, feels every tattoo is a message and it is incumbent upon him to take the time to fully understand what message his client wishes to express.

David Parks had no clue that Army garbage cans, a lone tattoo artist in Arkansas and his innate love of art would eventually land him at his own tattoo parlor — Comanche Street Tattoos in Kiowa — after owning tattoo parlors in both Denver and Parker.

Always interested in art, Parks went to art school, but technology made his particular art degree obsolete before he shed his cap and gown. So, he enlisted in the Army, where his artistic talents were immediately recognized and utilized.

Parks’ sergeant-major noticed his doodling and felt his abilities would be better developed by painting the sergeant-major’s rank on his garbage cans. Not to be outdone by a sergeantmajor, the colonel requested the same.

Parks’ burgeoning career culminated in painting murals in the barracks.

After the Army, an electronics job took him to Arkansas, where tattoo artist Three Fingered Jack’s success was inspirational. He decided he could give himself a tattoo, and then his girlfriend and her girlfriend and so on.

reality more than 30 years ago, providing artistic expression as well as the ability to give his customers the opportunity to memorialize something important either in a very serious or whimsical design.

Parks feels tattoos are very personal to each individual in concept and execution. He gets to know the client’s story during design and again as they talk throughout the tattoo process.

The pathos can sometimes be overwhelming depending upon the intensity of the stories, and it is hard not to become emotionally involved.

Parks feels a responsibility to his clients on their journey to discovering the right expression for their state of mind, and his deep compassion helps to guide a decision that may last a lifetime.

Do your customers need to be concerned with the hygienic aspects of getting a tattoo?

Different municipalities have different requirements, but all implements are now consumable. The sharp needles are actually mailed to a company that disposes of them and all designed for single use. It is really a matter of ethics.

I could sterilize needles and use again and no one would know but it is foolish because the needles only cost $2 and the sterilization process would cost much more. Besides, the integrity of the needle suffers some each time it is used.

Are tattoo artists required to be licensed?

Once again, it depends on the mu-

nicipality. Denver requires a license but you pay money and pick up a license. The only real requirement is a cursory Red Cross course in preventing disease transmission taught by volunteers. As expected, you pay your money and get a badge to display near your station. The health department does a once-a-year walk-through in Denver. However, here in Kiowa, I am the first and only tattoo shop in Kiowa and the infrastructure does not exist for licensing requirements.

Do tattoos diminish with time and need to be redone?

Yes, tattoos will fade. I have had mine for 30 years but I take care of myself with proper nutrition and try to remember to always use sun screen.

The aging of the tattoo depends on the how well the individual takes care of themselves. Lotions and sunblock help.

Treat it the same way you treat your aging skin. Sunburns cause cellular damage and that reflects on the tattoo.

How difficult are tattoos to remove or cover up?

Removing tattoos requires laser treatment which is very painful. It is more painful than getting the tattoo to begin with. There is also heavy-duty makeup like Dermablend that does a good job of temporarily covering the tattoo.

Summit hopes to change mental health approaches Experts aim for integrated model that focuses on whole person STAFF REPORT

A two-day summit aims to disrupt outdated approaches to mental health by bringing in experts to produce an integrated mental health model that focuses on the whole person.

The National Summit for Mental Health and Mental Fitness: Practical Solutions for Creating a Culture of Peace, hosted by The International Association of Human Values and America Meditates, is July 23-24 at East High School in Denver. The event concludes with a meditation session at City Park.

More than 46 million Americans experience mental illness every given year. If left untreated, those illnesses can cause tremendous suffering to those impacted and their families and cost the U.S. almost $200 billion a year, the news release said.

The summit brings together experts from diverse fields to build a holistic

approach for faster interventions, lower-cost treatments and efficient ways to curb violence and crimes through mental health prevention.

Experts will discuss and present integrated strategies that enhance positive emotions, life satisfaction and spirituality while addressing biological, cultural and economic approaches to treating mental health.

“We’re bringing together incredible thought leaders, change makers and influencers to share their gifts, their ideas, their innovation,” Katherine Winter-Sellery, chairwoman of America Meditates and the summit, said in the release. “Never has there been a better time to open the dialogue about critical issues in mental health and collaborate across silos, to build innovative solutions, and to address mental illness and its impact in all sections of society.”

Attendees will hail from multiple professions, backgrounds and parts of the world, providing networking opportunities to contribute to a movement that changes the way we think about and manage mental health in our communities.

Top members of former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s campaign are departing in a major shakeup as the brewpub owner-turned-politician tries to turn around his struggling presidential bid.

Campaign manager Brad Komar and national finance director Dan Sorenson have left the campaign. Spokeswoman Lauren Hitt confirmed their departures and said she, too, will exit the campaign in the coming weeks.

Parker Adventist first in world with new oncology device Facial recognition verifies identities to prevent errors, guides self-monitoring radiation treatment

Medical professionals around the globe are looking to Parker Adventist Hospital for its use of state-of-the-art technology to ensure proper treatment for cancer patients.

Beginning in March, Parker Adventist began implementing facial recognition technology to make sure patients are receiving the exact specifications of their prescribed radiation treatment. SafeRT-ID uses optical imaging to verify a patient’s identity prior to each treatment. It works with existing radiation oncology equipment made by its parent company Vision RT, which uses precision guidance technology — not operated by human touch — to provide radiation treatment and monitor movement with sub-millimeter accuracy.

What exactly does it do? It takes away the risk of a patient getting the treatment prescribed for someone else.

“It eliminates human error,” said Parker Adventist’s director of radia-

According to Centura Health, Parker Adventist is the first hospital in the world to use facial recognition for cancer treatment. Horner said representatives from hospitals across the country and the globe have come to Parker to see this technology with their own eyes and determine if it’s viable for their own facility. The only catch, as with any new medical technology, is the price tag. Horner said the whole setup cost about $65,000.

Patients who undergo radiation therapy need a regular, intense dosage

of radiation directly administered to the cancerous area. Each patient has a unique set of specifications for everything from their dosage prescription to their head placement while receiving treatment. Having a headrest set even one millimeter out of place can have a drastic effect on the placement of the entire body and can lead to mistakes in dosage. Those mistakes are few and far between, but, Horner said, even the slightest change to mitigate human error can make a difference.

“It’s important to the patients’ peace of mind to know they’re getting the

best possible treatment,” Horner said.

“To provide that at Parker, it’s huge.

Some patients travel to Mayo Clinic — they travel nationwide for that place they feel will provide the best treatment. And we’ve got it right here.”

Doug Powell of Douglas County finished radiation therapy for prostate cancer near the end of April. He used the facial recognition technology for about the last two months of his total treatment, which began last fall. Powell, 76, an engineer by trade, said he was pragmatic when considering the technology, and said the ease of the whole procedure made him comfortable.

“For two months, it’s five days a week, and by the end you’re just counting down … It’s just a tedious process every day,” Powell said. “I can’t tell you how the peace and calmness and comfort of coming in and working with this crew just makes it easy.”

The new technology, Horner said, is an extension of the hospital’s holistic approach to cancer treatment. The hospital offers everything from radiation therapy to massage treatment for its patients. Having the newest technology adds to that element of comfort doctors try to provide to their patients, Horner said.

State’s Behavioral Health Task Force kicks off First meeting takes place in Castle Rock

Lawmakers, state leaders and mental health professionals who make up Colorado’s Behavioral Health Task Force convened for the first time July 1 to explore solutions to the state’s high suicide rate and barriers to mental health care.

“I think it’s fair to say we have a

broken system and we have an opportunity to fix that as a task force,” said Michelle Barnes, chairwoman of the task force and executive director of the Colorado Department of Human Services. “The will to make a difference starts at the top.”

The task force, with the help of three subcommittees, is working to develop a “Behavioral Health Blueprint” for the state to improve cracks in the behavioral health system.

Services building in Castle Rock, with members of the public in attendance, began with impassioned introductions. The state received roughly 500 applications for the committees, which each have about 25 members.

The task force’s executive committee is made up of six members: Barnes, Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera, Douglas County Deputy Manager Barbara Drake, Colorado Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway, Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing Executive Director Kim Bimestefer and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Executive Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan.

“It’s really important that we get this right,” said Hunsaker Ryan, who previously worked as a commissioner in Eagle County, where the suicide rate is historically high.

On April 8, Gov. Jared Polis signed an executive order directing the Colorado Department of Human Services to head the behavioral task force.

Annually, Colorado pledges more than $1 billion to its behavioral health system, but the state ranked 43rd on Mental Health America’s 2018 mental health index, which is based on 15 criteria, including mental illness prevalence and access to care. Colorado is 10th in the country for the highest suicide rate,

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The three subcommittees under the task force are each charged with finding solutions to different challenges in the state’s behavioral health system.

The goal of the State Safety Net Subcommittee is to ensure all Coloradans have access to care in their communities, regardless of “acuity level, ability to pay, or co-occurring disabilities,” according to state’s website. The Children’s Behavioral Health Subcommittee is focused on better outcomes for children. The Long-Term Competency Subcommittee is tasked with developing a comprehensive plan for individuals in the criminal justice system, along with solutions to increase community intervention.

“I deal with people every day who think the response to every problem is more prison beds,” said Dean Williams, executive director of Colorado’s Department of Corrections.

“There is an opportunity to do some big work in this state.”

“I think they walked away from our office with a different idea about how things are evaluated in our county and a different perception of our staff.”

Some residents who purchased their homes between July 2016 and June 2018 saw their revaluations reduced greatly, and credit having a physical appraisal done at the time of purchase with having their values lowered.

Others, such as Bob Newhouse, who has lived in Elbert County for 20 years, said they felt the assessments were unfair, and not indicative of their property’s true value.

A mass appraisal system was done using a statistical analysis based on the market approach to value, and according to Murphy, some residents didn’t understand how the analysis was done.

“We talked to a lot of people, and I think it was very educational,” said Murphy. “Some people were misinformed about what actually is valued, so I think they were educated.”

Murphy also stated that her department’s employees are not the people who implement the taxes — which is done through mill levies — and that her staff is already looking at 2021.

“We’ve started a list on how to effectively help people become more educated on the process. Getting them the right information is very important,” said Murphy.

Taxpayers who appealed their revaluation and received a notice of determination from the assessor’s office and who still wish to challenge the decision must complete the reverse side of the determination notice and deliver via mail, postmarked by July 15, or deliver personally to the County Board of Equalization at 215 Comanche St. in Kiowa.

The CBOE is made up of the Elbert County Board of County Commissioners, who will render decision based on the recommendations of the hearing officer.

VOICES Shades of gray look a lot less shady

S

top me if you’ve heard this one. The day I found my first gray hairs, I thought I’d dye.

Today’s essay is about gray hair. I like gray hair.

Americans are not allowed to grow older gracefully. We are reminded QUIET at every turn that DESPERATION youth will be noticed and served.

And that trying to stay forever young, while an impossibility, can be achieved with dyes and injections.

I don’t always know who has had injections, but I (al- Craig Marshall most) always know Smith who has dyed their hair.

Somewhere along the line, gray hair got a bad reputation, and it continues to this day.

There is absolutely nothing wrong

with gray hair, and most of the time it looks far better than the opaque alternative.

Our skin and our hair age together. Jet black hair and 60-70-80-yearold skin is an incongruity.

Some of us, obviously, prefer the incongruity.

I began to have gray hair when I was in my early 20s. I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t happy about it. And then I saw someone my age who had a full head of gray hair.

It was a comedian named Steve Martin. When I realized that having gray hair didn’t seem to bother him, it no longer bothered me that I had gray hair.

Actors and actresses have their hair dyed for various roles all the time. Martin’s hair was dyed black for his roles in “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” and “My Blue Heaven.”

He looked completely different, but it was right for those two performances.

However, some dye jobs don’t work

out so well. The next time you watch “You’ve Got Mail,” take a close look at Tom Hanks’ hair. It’s so unnaturally black that it becomes a distraction.

I have sometimes wondered what it would be like to be a celebrity.

I have sometimes wondered what it would be like to be celebrity, whose looks are pre-eminent.

We have all seen plastic surgery gone wrong. In some cases, very wrong.

Some actors and actresses have grown old in front of our eyes without exaggerated attempts to preserve a memory.

Take a look at Bud Cort in “Harold and Maude.” And then take a look at Bud Cort in “Pollock.”

There are ads everywhere that promise years will be taken off if only particular salves and creams and pills are purchased.

I am not interested.

I would rather spend my money on books, and feed the inside of my

head.

Cosmetics are not going to improve my appearance or my life.

Maybe it’s somewhat easier to say these things because I’m a man. I don’t know. You tell me.

All I know is I prefer hair that looks like hair, and not hair that looks like an attempt to hold off the calendar.

Ironically, I know someone half my age who dyes her hair gray. Or blue. Or green.

Hair isn’t quite the statement it once was. Remember: “Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen”? But it’s still has its place in our perception of how we appear to others.

Finally: Please, please, please reevaluate that comb-over.

The power rooted in trusted friendship

T

here was a recent video that made its way around social media and the news. It was the story of two Minnesota high school baseball teams playing in a playoff game, and the winner would be moving on to the state championship rounds. The story WINNING wasn’t about the WORDS teams, one coming out with a win and a trip to state and the other taking the loss ending their season.

It was about two friends and a display of true friendship and loyalty.

As the game was down to the final Michael Norton out, the pitcher was facing not only his opponent, but also his best friend. He struck him out to win the game and advance his team to states. But as his team rushed on to the field to celebrate, the pitcher rushed to home plate to hug and console his friend. It was

an amazing display of an awesome friendship.

There have been many friends in my life, people who I have enjoyed spending time with personally and professionally. Sometimes as we all know, friendships can come and go as we move into different seasons of life, change careers, move or relocate to a different city or state. And sometimes friendships can dissolve over a dispute or disagreement, and many times over the smallest or silliest things.

When I watched the video of these two friends and opponents, it warmed my heart to see such friendship and loyalty. It reminded me of the friends I have had for several decades, men and women who have been more than friends and who feel more like family. There have been times where distance has been a factor, busy schedules, and we may not see each other or talk for six months or more, but when we do, it feels like we just talked the day before and we pick up right where we left off.

to everybody. When in fact, we can be that one friend who sticks closer than a brother, or sister, and build those trusted friendships.

Zig Ziglar says, “If you go out looking for friends, you will find that they are very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you will find them everywhere.” What he is saying here is that if we are low on friends or don’t feel we have those truly loyal friends, we need to look at who we are and our behaviors as a friend. Are we demonstrating the character traits of a trusted friend?

speak to several times a week, if not every day. We see each other often, we share our deepest concerns, we celebrate our successes, and we would do anything for one another.

Loyalty is never questioned, love and trust are the foundations to the friendships just as love and trust are the foundation to any good relationship. If I ever needed anything, I know I could call them, and they know if they were ever in need that I would be there for them as well.

One of my closest friends said it best, “I would rather have a tight circle of three to five very close friends than to have a large circle of acquaintances.” He made this comment as we talked about having the ability to confide in a friend without worry of judgment or that the information will be shared with others.

This feeling is underscored in Proverbs 18:24, “A man of too many friends comes to ruin; but there is one who sticks closer than a brother.” In the rush and crush and crazy pace of life, we sometimes get caught up in trying to be everything

OBITUARIES FUHRMANN

Frances Fuhrmann Frances Fuhrmann, age 87 passed away from this life into her home in Glory on July 2, 2019.

Frances was born in San Diego, CA, September 18, 1931.

She is survived by her loving husband, Newell, Children: Chris (Geri), Rob (Cathy), Terry and Kim (Bill), Grandchildren: Caleb (June), Tim, Stephen, Dana & Andrew and Great Grandchildren: Emmalee, Eliana, Leo and Anna.

Frances was a licensed cosmetologist and also did paraprofessional work in Special Education at 2 middle schools.

Frances passions were music, piano, art and decorating which included her house and yard. She loved flowers.

She was a beautiful pianist and loved playing hymns. She played for several

churches, family gatherings and just for fun.

She played at Lowry Air Force Base for the Airmen to sing at the Chapel #1 on Thursday nights, which was where she met the love of her life, Newell.

They married in this same Chapel on February 24, 1951.

Her greatest passion in her life, though, was her faith in Yeshua (Jesus); living and learning from Him was vital to her daily life. We know she entered into eternity with the words from Yeshua, “Well done my good and faithful servant...Enter into the joy of Your Lord.”

Frances will be remembered as a loving, generous, graceful woman to all her family and those who knew her. Her warm and encouraging smile and gentle words will truly be missed.

Paleo, keto dieters

for tips, support

Proponents say eating healthy is easier than ever as diets gain popularity

The paleo diet is based on a foundation of foods like fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and most kinds of nuts.

or the past four years, Littleton resident Kimberly Spomer has attended a support group. The group of roughly 25 people consists of like-minded individuals seeking community and advice as they follow the paleolithic or “paleo” diet and other low-carb diets.

“You go out to eat, and it can be difficult feeling like you’re the only one,” she said. “The group is this really strong community. We know each other, we watch each other’s progress, we share tips and books that we’ve read.”

Known as the Low-Carb and Paleo Support Group, the monthly meeting is run by Denver’s Diet Doctor at 7720 S. Broadway and facilitated by health care professionals Dr. Jeff Gerber, Erynn Kay and Jennifer Hooker.

Members give each other cooking and shopping tips and encouragement after days gone wrong, Spomer said.

The group showcases just one way low-carb dieters have come together as the trend establishes itself in the mainstream. Though some point to a falling number of Google searches for the term “paleo,” Spomer and Gerber hold that low-carb diets are hardly fading away — especially in Colorado, which ranks as the number one state for Google searches of the terms “paleo” and “keto.”

The keto diet — on which dieters sharply restrict carb intake to put the body into ketosis, a metabolic state in which stored body fat is used to produce energy — has particularly gained popularity. In January 2019, 11 times more users searched the term than in January 2017.

Spomer said the trend shows through attendance at Low Carb Denver, a March conference she volunteers with.

The conference drew more than 800 individuals in 2019, as opposed to the roughly 300 who attended in 2016, she said.

For many, low-carb diets represents a treatment for chronic and life-altering conditions — as was the case for Spomer, who has an autoimmune disease that left her with “no energy,” she said. “I would consume half as much as my family and gain half a pound a week.”

After trying different autoimmune protocol diets, Spomer landed on a low-carb paleo diet two years ago. She said she hasn’t experienced any of her symptoms since.

“Things got a lot better. People are shocked how much it helps,” she said.

“It changes everything.”

‘More than just food’ Popularized by former Colorado State University professor Loren Cordain’s 2010 book “The Paleo Diet,” the whole-food-based diet encourages mimicry of a human diet thousands of years ago — “the evolutionary way to look at nutrition,” Gerber said.

Gerber — who was certified in family medicine in 1991 and has been a healthcare provider in the area since 1993 — and those in his support group focus on a low-carb version of the diet. Strict followers do not eat sugar, grains, margarine, some dairy products and processed food. Instead, they

eat natural foods, including meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and fruit.

“It’s a little less carbs and a little more protein and fat,” he said. “A lowfat diet is the old school.”

Gerber often recommends whole food diets like paleo and keto to his patients, reminding them that choosing what to eat is just one part of the equation.

Chef Jami Fynboh agreed. In 2012, Fynboh and her husband, Derek, opened Denver-based mmm…COFFEE! Paleo Bistro. Located at 910 Santa Fe Drive, the bistro is the nation’s first completely grain-free restaurant, she said.

“Paleo is more than just food; it’s a way of life,” she said. “It’s taking care of yourself, getting exercise and having time to relax.”

Fynboh has followed the paleo diet for eight years, with Derek joining in a year after her, the day they signed the lease for their paleo restaurant, she said.

Throughout years of businesses, she has watched customers develop a better understanding of the diet as all types of people give the lifestyle a try.

“We’ve had people who literally got off the plane at DIA and drove to us first,” she said. “They’re from all over.

People just want to take their power back and their health back.”

A variety of options While following the paleo diet can initially be difficult and requires some

Because those on the paleo diet cut out whole grains and legumes, the dieters may be deficient in fiber, vitamins and some micronutrients, Mayo Clinic said. The diet also places restrictions on dairy products, which could lead to a calcium or protein deficiency.

Dieters should be mindful of what types of fats, proteins and vitamins they are consuming. High-fat diets also put individuals at greater risk for kidney disease, heart disease and some cancers, according to University of California at Davis Health. online research, she said, “it’s very easy once you know what you’re doing.”

Spomer and Gerber echoed the sentiment, highlighting that there are many different methods and levels of strictness on which to follow the diet. Most on the diet can purchase any ingredients they need at stores like Costco or Walmart, they said.

“You don’t always have to eat on the top of the food chain of snobbery,” Gerber said. “You can make a meal at a restaurant paleo-friendly.”

Gerber suggested ordering burgers and sandwiches without a bun, choosing options low in sugar and asking if food is cooked with industrial seed oils, which are a certain type of vegetable oil.

Spomer and those in the support group have put these tips to the test many times, often going out to Red Robin after group meetings, she said.

She added that with group members from Boulder to Colorado Springs, who range in age from students to retirees, there’s no shortage of advice to be had in the group.

“It’s huge for new people, because low-carb is a learning curve,” she said.

“You have to be patient with yourself.

Anyone can do it if they want to, and they can do it in all different ways.”

The flu vaccine turned out to be a big disappointment again.

The vaccine didn’t work against a flu bug that popped up halfway through the past flu season, dragging down overall effectiveness to 29%, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported June 27.

The flu shot was working well early in the season with effectiveness put at 47% in February. But it was virtually worthless during a second wave driven by a tougher strain, at just 9%.

There was “no significant protection” against that strain, said the CDC’s Brendan Flannery.

Flu vaccines are made each year to protect against three or four different kinds of flu virus. The ingredients are based on predictions of what strains will make people sick the following winter.

This season’s shot turned out to be a mismatch against the bug that showed up late.

That pushed down the overall effectiveness to one of the lowest in recent years.

Since 2011, the only season with a lower estimate was the winter of 2014-15, when effectiveness was 19%. A mismatch was also blamed then.

Vaccines against some other infectious diseases are not considered successful unless they are at least 90% effective. But flu is particularly challenging, partly because the virus can so quickly change. Overall, flu vaccine has averaged around 40%.

Flu shots are recommended for virtually all Americans age 6 months or older. Officials say the vaccine is still worthwhile since it works against some strains, and it likely prevented 40,000 to 90,000 hospitalizations over the winter flu season.

The CDC bases vaccine effectiveness on preventing cases bad enough to send someone to the doctor.

Summer is here, which typically means teenagers have more free time on their hands. And their hands may often be even more busy with their smartphones as they try to stay in touch with friends and fill the void normally occupied by school.

But while popular apps like Snapchat and Instagram have some benefit, mental health experts agree that in most cases human-to-human interaction is far more beneficial.

Finding a healthy balance of time spent on and off social media can be a challenge. According to 2018 study by Pew Research, 95% of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online “almost constantly.” Roughly one-third of participants said they visited Snapchat or YouTube most often.

Mental health experts recommend one to two hours of screen time a day and no more than 10 hours per week.

Too much time spent on devices can take away from positive face-to-face activities, disrupt sleep and in turn disrupt mental health, and potentially hurt self-esteem.

“As kids spend more time on (social media), there is a much higher likelihood that it is going to become more detrimental than beneficial because teens are very comparative with one another,” said Dr. Sarah Davidon, research director at Mental Health Colorado, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the treatment and prevention of mental health and substance-use disorders. “It starts getting really hard on teens, who, even without social media, are not as confident with themselves at different ages in their lives.”

The good news is that summer

• Exercise. Go for a jog or grab a sports ball and head to the nearest park.

• Color in a coloring book. Amazon has a variety of options, including designs of flowers and animals.

• Listen to music. Or put your headphones in and head outside for a walk.

• Do a puzzle with family or friends.

Lavender Festival to be fragrant fiesta Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms hosting event on July 20

More than 2,000 lavender plants will perfume the air at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms on July 20, when they are especially celebrated with what is planned to be an annual event — the Lavender Festival. Loved for hundreds of years for its fragrance, lavender has historically been grown in Provence, France, where fields of it thrive in bright sunshine.

In recent years, Colorado growers — and others in the West — have discovered that lavender responds happily

to our dry, sunny days and cool nights, and it is becoming a significant alternate cash crop for some farmers.

Palisade, home to those luscious Colorado peaches, is also experiencing a surge in lavender culture.

We learned from a Colorado Public Radio broadcast from Grand Junction recently that Colorado State University agriculturalists have reached out to area farmers as they expand into lavender culture.

And that each variety has a distinct fragrance!

It’s therefore an especially appropriate plant for Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms to feature as the property, once a farm, develops into a showplace for plants that will also work well for the local home gardener.

The 750-acre property southwest of Littleton offers both formal gardens and a natural area along Deer Creek

— the water source that drew the original farmer to the site. (Longtime residents may remember it as Chatfield Arboretum, but the Farms name is now the established one.)

The festival will not only display its neat rows of purple and blue flowering plants, but it will offer demonstrations and sales by craft, food and beverage vendors throughout the day.

There will be sachets, of course and creams, body butters and other skin care products, offered by local artisans.

And for those who want to dig deeper, there will be a session called “AntiAging Lavender Herbal Skincare” ($53 non-member, $48 member), which will give the participant products to carry along home, with recipes from 10 a.m. to noon. Register ahead for this.

And, looking around the gardens

will offer ideas on how to incorporate lavender plants into home flower beds as well, where they will grow and flower happily year after year. The grayish leaves and blue/purple blooms blend really well into beds of mixed flowers, as well as reliably returning each year, with a bit of trimming and grooming.

Just try to avoid transplanting them once established — they don’t adjust well to being dug out and moved.

While at the venue for the Lavender Festival, visitors can enjoy touring the historic Hildebrand House and other farm buildings, as well as the old school house that was rescued from what is now the bottom of Chatfield Reservoir.

Kamala Vanderkolk, of Highlands Ranch, has hosted exchange students for the past three years. “She was getting too anxious about keeping the artificial thing going,” Vanderkolk said, adding that when she stopped using the app, some peers stopped talking to her.

Boredom is healthy, Davidon said, as it is a chance for young people to be “inventive.”

“They might kick and scream but that’s OK,” Davidon said. “Parents aren’t bad parents if their kids are bored.”

The student began engaging in other activities — exploring downtown Denver with friends, trying out new restaurants and taking drives to the mountains.

“She was kind of relieved ultimately to get that time back so she could spend time with people she cared about rather than keeping this artificial contest going,” Vanderkolk said. “She would, in general, do more things with the people who she genuinely wanted to spend time with.”

Anthony encourages teens to get out of the house and go to the movies or the mall with others. “You want to limit as much as you can those kinds of sedentary activities and encourage interactions,” he said.
