Elbert County commissioners, at their June 24 meeting, unanimously approved a resolution “in support of the preservation of rights of peaceful
assembly and protest and protection of citizen safety and property.” The resolution was created after gatherings across America that ranged from peaceful demonstrations to riots, sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, drew attention to law enforcement reform. “We certainly live in strange times,” said Commissioner Chris Richardson. “A lot of what’s in this resolution at one time we considered to be obvious. Folks have a right to register their concerns with their

government and to peacefully assemble. All of this is what we are based on as a nation.” The resolution quotes sections of the U.S. Constitution, stating: “The Constitution of the United States of America, ordained and established by The People, prohibits the abridging of the freedom of speech, the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances …”
Elbert County and the towns of Elizabeth, Kiowa and Simla entered an agreement on how to distribute $2,293,004 in CARES Act funds throughout the municipalities. Monies will be used for COVID-19 related expenses, as each municipality sees fit. Beginning on July 7, the memorandum of understanding will help cover expenses incurred up until Dec. 31. The county will distribute agreedupon amounts to each town, which will be used to cover expenses already used on COVID-19 issues, and upcoming issues through the end of the year,
