Stampede brings rockin’ rodeo thrills Elizabeth will be home to traditional Western entertainment June 6-9

Summer is almost here, and with it comes warmer temperatures, picnics, barbecues and Elbert County’s biggest party of the year — the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo.

Dozens of volunteers are spending their Saturdays preparing for the big Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event, which draws thousands of spectators each year to the professional rodeo and festivities that run from June 6 to June 9 at the arena at Casey Jones Park in Elizabeth.

“The rodeo started as a local gathering in the 1920s,” said Jace Glick, president of the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo Organization. “It went on and off, but has really been running nonstop since the boys returned back from World War II. Now we’re the big league as a PRCA rodeo — we’re where all the cowboys want to be competing.”

The Elizabeth Stampede is among the few professional rodeos that are self-funded, according to Glick, which means they rely on ticket sales and partners to be able to put the event on each year.

Secret Well boutique’s charm is far from secret Elizabeth store keeps items affordable while remaining fashionable

Mother and daughter Barbara Berndt and Hannah Madsen (soon to be a mother herself in August) own and run the Secret Well boutique in Elizabeth. While both are sociable and love fashion, each brings distinct talents to the enterprise. Mother and daughter work well in tandem, with Hannah helping people express their personality through clothing and Barbara, a self-proclaimed communicator (read that gregarious), naturally building relationships with each visitor.

Now, the word “boutique” suggests fashionable, sophisticated and pricey items — but that final adjective isn’t the case at the Secret Well boutique.

Although the clothing is sophisticated, merchandise is kept affordable, and therein lies the challenge for Barbara and Hannah. They never reorder and are always looking for that one-of-akind article. Admittedly, they stock only one of each size (XS to XL) to preserve exclusivity, but continually hunt for high-quality pieces reasonably priced.

Why is it called the Secret Well boutique?

We wanted a name to reflect who we are and what we believe. Our faith is important and one of our favorite Bible stories was Jesus meeting the women at the well because that was one of the first times Jesus really interacted with women. Though the well is special to our faith, we wanted

a name that would not be exclusive to another’s beliefs. A little brainstorming and “Secret” completed the name.

What was the catalyst for this journey?

Hannah was a hairdresser in Castle Rock and had the opportunity to dabble in retail clothing. We put up a couple of racks and things sold well.

Customers wanted her to open a boutique and so we found a permanent home. We chose Elizabeth because it was between our homes in Kiowa and Castle Rock and besides, we loved the Elizabeth community.

Who is the fashionista here who advises customers?

We are both very interested in fashion but have very different fashion tastes and bounce ideas off of each other. Hannah loves to help people find clothing that expresses who they are.

She feels what you wear should reflect your taste whether it be leather or bling. She likes to assess a customer’s lifestyles and whether the purchase will be worn on a horse or to dinner.

How did you come to live in Colorado?

We are a military family and the family patriarch, Scott Berndt, is retired Army. We traveled quite a bit, were eventually stationed at Buckley Air Force Base and fell in love with Colorado. Our military background is reflected in the number of Western, patriotic offerings.

Citizens rally at Capitol for gun rights Rally for Our Rights urges people push back against red flag law

Dennis Gatchalian has lived in the Unites States since 1984, the year he left his home in the Philippines. He’s resided in Denver for 35 years.

On May 18, he stood in front of the state Capitol listening to speakers at the pro-gun event, Rally for Our Rights, which drew more than 100 people. His experiences growing up under a regime that instated martial law in the 1970s, and watching his brother arrested, jailed and sentenced to hard labor for possessing a leaflet, brought him to the steps of the Capitol that day.

“I know what oppression is and I can see the parallels here,” he said.

Throughout the day, a common theme emerged. Gun rights proponents believe the right to bear arms protects all other rights, and they worry issues including Colorado’s red flag law are one more step toward their biggest fear — a total disarming of the public.

The rally opened with a speech from Robert Wareham, the attorney leading recall efforts against Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock. Wareham maintained Colorado’s new red flag law is unconstitutional and gun grab legislation.

“This is going to be abused,” he said from the podium.

Wareham spoke to a crowd that booed Spurlock’s name and cheered at the mention of recalling him. Spurlock had violated their trust, they believed, by backing the law. Booths offered information on recall efforts

Cody feels pro-gun citizens have compromised with gun control advocates on numerous issues, naming bump stock bans as one example, but that further gun restrictions like the red flag law, also called an Extreme Risk Protection Order, keep coming.

“We give and we give but it’s not enough,” she said.

Cody attended with her 20-year-old son, Thomas, who also dislikes ERPO and called it “the most relevant issue right now” in Colorado related to gun

debates.

“I’m concerned that it takes due process out of the equation,” he said.

“It puts you in a he said, she said situation.”

Thomas said his interest in guns is first because owning them is a constitutional right, second because they provide a method of self-defense and lastly because he enjoys sports shooting.

Throughout the day, Tony Genella of Centennial held a sign on one side reading “97.8% of mass shootings are in gun-free zones.” He’d like for teachers to carry weapons on school grounds if they want to and if they have undergone conceal carry classes.

“I strictly oppose gun-free zones,” he said. “I believe that our schools are the most vulnerable areas.”

The event took place 11 days after Colorado’s most recent school shooting, which left an 18-year-old senior at STEM School Highland Ranch, Kendrick Castillo, dead and eight others injured.

Speakers at the event urged citizens to support recalls of Spurlock, Polis and state Rep. Tom Sullivan and to push back against gun control measures like the red flag bill.

Cody listened, and like Gatchalian, worried the government would succeed a disarming people completely if people don’t protest.

“I know people say, `Oh, it never will,’” she said. “They’re trying.”

Oil, gas drilling can proceed while regulations are made Some environmentalists had sought moratorium while rules were crafted

Colorado officials said May 21 that they had no plans to stop energy companies from drilling for oil and gas while regulators overhaul state rules to make health, safety and the environment their top priority.

Dan Gibbs, chief of the state Department of Natural Resources, said lawmakers did not want a moratorium on drilling permits while regulators rewrite the rules under a new law that shifted the state’s focus from production to protection.

“It was never the intent of the Legislature that we pause our work,” Gibbs told the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which will implement the new law. The commission is part of Gibbs’ department.

Some environmentalists and community activists have demanded the commission stop issuing permits until the new rules are complete. They argue that drilling makes climate change worse, pollutes Colorado’s air and water, and puts nearby residents at risk from fires and explosions.

The May 21 meeting was the first time the oil and gas commission met since Democratic Gov. Jared Polis signed the law mandating sweeping changes in regulations.

In addition to the new focus on protecting the public and the environment, the law gives local governments some authority over the location of wells.

The changes are Colorado’s latest attempt to balance its booming oil and gas industry with a burgeoning population. The state’s crude oil production has quadrupled since 2010, and it now ranks sixth in the nation in both oil and natural gas output, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency.

But the state’s most productive oil

and gas field — the Wattenberg field north and east of Denver — borders on some fast-growing communities, raising fears about the dangers of pollution and accidents.

The new law changed the makeup of the seven-member commission to dilute industry influence, reducing the number of commissioners with oil and gas experience from three to one while adding experts in wildlife and public health.

Polis announced the new members May 17, a few days before their first meeting.

Only two commissioners are holdovers: Howard Boigon, who is an oil and gas attorney, and Erin Overturf, who works for the environmental group Western Resource Advocates.

Four other members applied for reappointment but were passed over, commission spokesman Chris Arend said.

Polis’ spokeswoman, Shelby Weiman,

did not directly answer a question about why the four were not chosen but said the new commission has the expertise and geographic and political diversity needed to implement the new law. She said Polis appreciates the service of the former commissioners.

Commission staff members have already begun rewriting rules and have held preliminary meetings and released some proposals. But the commissioners themselves are still reorganizing, and work on rewriting substantive drilling rules isn’t expected to begin until later this year.

Once all the rules are rewritten, the commission will be replaced by a smaller version that includes five appointed, full-time commissioners and the heads of two state departments, natural resources and public health.

The commission now consists of seven appointed, part-time members and the two department heads.

A more than 30-year-old cycling tradition rolls back into Douglas County in June.

The massive Elephant Rock race, which brings thousands of cyclists to the area, kicks off in Castle Rock on June 1.

The event is based at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 500 Fairgrounds Road. A bike expo runs on Saturday, June 1 as race participants register and check in.

The expo continues into race day, which is Sunday, June 2.

That’s when bikes hit the road. The event’s 100-mile race runs from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m., the 58-mile course from 6 to 7:30 a.m., a 60 and 27-mile gravel road course and a 40-mile road course run from 8 to 9 a.m. and a family ride begins at 9 a.m.

The expo, food truck service and beer garden continue into late afternoon and awards are at 3:30 p.m.

All courses close at 4 p.m. Routes have changed from previous events because of construction on Interstate 25. Interactive maps are available in the 2019 Ride Guide, posted on rollmassif.com.

Meal kit companies face rough, uncertain road Competition, price among factors making future look grim

Meal kit companies face an ultimatum: Adapt or die.

The business is still in its infancy, with the biggest players — Blue Apron and HelloFresh — less than a decade old. But they’re facing serious challenges from restaurant and grocery delivery services, smaller niche players and even home chefs.

The struggle intensified May 20, when Blue Apron announced that it could be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange because its closing share price has been lower than $1 since early May. The company’s share price closed down 8% on May 20 to 68 cents.

New York-based Blue Apron said it will try to raise its stock price with a reverse stock split, which will be subject to a vote of its shareholders at the company’s annual meeting on June 13.

Subscription-based meal kit companies face numerous problems. For one, they appeal to a small population.

NPD Group, a consulting firm, estimates that just 4% of U.S. consumers have tried them.

“Meal kits are a more expensive but less convenient option for busy people who do not have time to cook,” said Cara Brosius, a market research analyst with Packaged Facts.

Brosius said meal kit customers have also complained about limited menu selection, poor quality of ingredients and too much packaging.

Blue Apron hasn’t made a profit since its 2017 IPO. It’s been losing customers, who quickly tire of its relatively high prices — $9.99 per serving for a two-person plan — as well as its subscription plan, which forces them to be less spontaneous. Blue Apron’s customer base fell 25% to 557,000 between 2017 and 2018.

Others have struggled. Meal kit company Chef ’d closed its doors last

July. And some have been swallowed up. Alberton’s grocery chain, for instance, acquired the Plated brand in 2017 while Kroger acquired Home Chef last year.

Darren Seifer, a food industry analyst with the consulting firm NPD Group, said the meal kit market feels like the dot-com boom of the late 1990s.

“It’s a very crowded space, with a lot of companies not paying too much attention to the bottom line,” he said.

He expects consolidation, which is already happening. HelloFresh bought organic meal kit provider Green Chef last year, for example.

Packages Facts says the U.S. meal kit market grew 22% to $3.1 billion in 2018, but it expects that growth to decelerate over the next five years because of competition. UberEats, for example, will deliver a restaurant meal for $3.99 plus a service fee. Chefs

Seifer said there is a place for subscription-based meal plans. They have a lot of appeal for people with specific dietary needs, he said.

But he thinks the most successful companies will also branch out into grocery stores or delivery, offering on-demand meal kits. Seifer’s research has shown that up to 60% of Americans don’t know what’s for dinner at 4:30 p.m. They want easy options they can pick up on their way home.

HelloFresh started selling meal kits at Stop & Shop and Giant grocery stores last year. Blue Apron has teamed up with Jet.com to offer sameday meal kit delivery in New York. It also had a six-month trial with Costco, but that ended last year. Amazon is selling meal kits at some Whole Foods and Amazon Go convenience stores.

In a report on the industry late last year, Packaged Facts suggested other opportunities for growth. Some companies are specializing in niche diets.

Purple Carrot, for example, serves vegans and targets athletes through its partnership with Tom Brady. One Potato designs its meals for families with kid-size portions.

Meal kit companies could also focus on on-demand delivery instead of subscription services, and on specialoccasion meals, like Thanksgiving or Valentine’s Day, when consumers are looking for help and inspiration.

Rules are rules, even if your fur baby is special

will say it from the start: I know how unfair this is to you. I know it’s unfair to you because you’re different.

You’re special, and something like this cramps your style.

But here’s a narrative: There’s a man in my neighborhood who walks his unleashed dog everywhere, and the dog goes wherever it wants. It

doesn’t stay by its owner’s side.

It goes into yards, up on porches, over, under, sideways, down.

The owner looks like he is humming a Belafonte song. Everything is a groove.

We have rabbits in the neighborhood: lots and lots of rabbits.

One runs from a bush, and the unleashed dog sees it. There is a pursuit into the street.

We have something else in this neighborhood. It’s near a high school. That means we experience a lot of drivers who have had their licenses for about two weeks, and the speed limit? Well, it’s just a suggestion.

The dog, the rabbit, and Andy Hardy all convene.

That’s one narrative. Here’s another. Harry and I leave for a walk at exactly the same time that Rex is sniffing at our door.

Rex is about six times larger than Harry is.

Rex would not be safe. Rex would not be safe from me. I will do whatever I have to do to protect my dog.

There’s another narrative, and it’s the most important one.

Leashing dogs around here is the law.

Laws are broken all the time. Littering? By the ton? No turn signals?

Who really needs to know which way you are going to go next?

I see parents with their small children and dogs walking our block.

Mom or dad is mindful of the child, while Snoopy has a field day.

If it’s a financial consideration, and I know times are tough for some of us, you can make a leash out of a piece of rope.

I just checked, and if you have Amazon Prime, they can have a leash on your doorstep, by tomorrow, for around $5.

They come in colors. They come in different lengths. Some are retractable.

Need one? I’ll be happy to get one

for you. I really don’t want to take a broom to your dog’s head.

But I will.

There are these hindrances in a life of ease, aren’t there? Most of the signs have something else kind of annoying on them.

They say you’re supposed to pick up after your dog.

That means poop. But, for goodness sake, it’s icky, and not only that: It’s biodegradable.

We have some characters here who pick up after their dogs, and leave the baggies on the greenbelt.

It’s been said before, it no longer seems like many of us know or care if our behavior has an impact on others.

It’s called limitless self-absorption.

Feeling good just feels so good, and that’s good

A

re there one or two songs, that when we hear them, we just get happy, teary-eyed, energized, and just feel good?

Of course, there are and that’s a good thing. Feeling good just feels good, doesn’t it?

Maybe it’s not WINNING a song but rather WORDS a movie, a place, a smell, a meal, something that touches our senses in such a way that our heart takes over, changing our mood in an instant.

We can literally go from feeling OK to slipping away into Michael Norton a beautiful moment of reminiscing or daydreaming.

Maybe even drop our hearts to our toes. These memory triggers can come from something very recent, something in our past, or maybe even bring back beautifully wonderful memories of someone who we have lost, and a very healthy part of our grieving process.

There are certain songs, sounds, books, and scripture that often bring on strong emotions for me as I allow them to bring my past into my present. Some bring me incredible joy, and some carry with them a deep melancholy type of feeling as I think about different people and situations that happened in my own life. And whether it’s incredible joy or a tinge or more of sadness, I love the feeling of having feelings. I think most of us do, don’t we?

Our feelings play such a huge role in so many aspects of our lives. It’s not just the tender romantic feelings, or nostalgic feelings, but our feelings drive most if not all of our decision making as well. There are plenty of articles and reports that show where people make their decisions on feeling and emotion and then will support or rationalize their decisions intellectually. This is true in our personal lives as well as our professional lives.

Feelings are good. Feeling good is good, as a matter of fact it’s better than good.

Just like opinions can be debated but facts cannot, feelings are our own. No one can take them from us, no one can stop us from feeling a certain way, but they sure can have an impact on how they make us feel. For me, some of the songs, sounds, and movies are powerful reminders of people who were and are extremely important to me in my life.

out, one of those songs that typically gets me all fired up came on my playlist. I didn’t even notice it until about 30 seconds later. It caught me off guard that I had missed it as I found myself grinding through my workout and not really paying attention to the music. I stopped and hit the back button just so I could hear the song again, even waiting a moment to take it in, allowing my feelings and emotions to get back in sync with my workout.

It was not until my drive home that I started to think about it more and I found myself wondering how many times have I missed other songs, smells, sounds, movies, and people in my life? How many times have I missed out on great feelings of joy, excitement, sadness, or grief because I was just too busy grinding it out in the gym, at work, or just trying to keep up with all of my other commitments? I was kind of bummed with myself. And then I thought, wait, being bummed with myself is a feeling, OK I am back in the game.

Legislators forming committee to focus on school safety Panel to be named

Legislators are prioritizing school safety following the May 7 shootings at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

On May 17, members of the state House and Senate announced the pending formation of an interim committee focused on studying school safety in Colorado, according to a news release.

The committee will look at issues related to school safety, mental health and the prevention of threats to students, staff and volunteers statewide.

In the release, Holbert pointed out that 178 school districts in Colorado operate under local control, per state constitution.

“We also have voluminous state statute already on the books regard-

ing emergency response planning and armed security in our public schools,” Holbert said. “This interim committee will begin its work by reviewing those statutes, the division of constitutional authority between school districts and state government, and then they will move forward on proposing solutions

to better protect students.”

Neville pointed out what has been done.

“We began the process last year by providing financial assistance to schools to secure their facilities and fund trained personnel to enhance physical protection,” he said in the release. “We’ve also provided funding to enable professionals to come alongside students to assist with their personal needs should tragedy strike.

We will do more.”

Two members from each caucus in both chambers will serve on the bipartisan committee, which will have the opportunity “to seek testimony from a wide range of experts to aid in their mission.”

Members of the committee — who will be appointed by June 1 — will meet three times during the interim session and have the ability to recommend legislation.

Brauchler is first military judge for Colorado National Guard DA adds new role after position is created by state legislators STAFF REPORT

George Brauchler, the district attorney for Colorado’s 18th Judicial District, who also serves as a colonel in the Colorado Army National Guard, has added another title and job: military judge.

According to a news release from the DA’s office, Brauchler success-

fully completed the 62nd Military Judges Course at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia, and is now certified to serve as a military judge.

The three-week Brauchler intensive course is an invitation-only, multi-service training including active duty, reserve, and National Guard judge candidates from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

The Colorado General Assembly in 2018 updated the Colorado Code of

Military Justice to provide for courtsmartial authority, necessitating the creation of a position of military judge.

Brauchler will be the first military judge for the Colorado National Guard, the release said. He also has been selected for Army War College, a military education prerequisite to greater potential leadership opportunities, the release said.

Brauchler is proud of his military service and strives to encourage others to serve: Three members of his office are on active duty, with five others actively drilling in the guard or reserve, the release said.

The U.S. Department of Defense in 2017 honored the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office with the Freedom Award for support of employees who serve in the guard and reserve.

It is the first district attorney’s office in the country to receive the award.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve my country and the citizens of Colorado, here and abroad, in uniform for my adult life,” Brauchler said in the release. “I am humbled to be selected as a military judge to ensure that those in service are afforded due process when accused of criminal behavior.”

Drew Lock doesn’t begrudge Joe Flacco for saying that winning games — not mentoring the rookie quarterback — is his top priority.

“I think if any quarterback’s main goal isn’t focused on winning games, first off, it’s not the quarterback you want on your team,” Lock told The Associated Press in a phone interview in mid-May. Flacco, who was acquired from Baltimore in January, said he’s too busy learning a new offense to concern himself with grooming his supposed successor, a stance that drew praise from general manager John Elway and coach Vic Fangio but criticism from the likes of Kurt Warner and other media members who viewed it as selfish.

“I feel like if it would have been like the exact opposite answer, people would have scrutinized him for not wanting to win football games first,’’ Lock said. “It’s such a double standard there with what people are making out of what he said.’’

What types of items do you carry in your store?

We carry unique clothing for all sizes. Milkbarn is an exclusive line of baby clothes and the onesies, hats and even swaddles are decorated with traditional farm animals. We also offer seasonal gifts, and special gifts for every occasion. We really ramp up our home goods at Christmas but offer signs, lanterns and other decoration for the home yearround. Hannah often tailors our items to Elizabeth events such as the Stampede.

Where do you buy merchandise?

We search online for items, buy some at market and receive vendor recommendations. We are always looking for vendors we can trust that deliver quickly. We buy local in Denver and other parts of Colorado, if possible.

What is the “Love 146” sign at the register?

It is an international organization that works to stop human sex trafficking and the exploitation of women and children — rehabilitation of those rescued, and concentration on education to raise awareness to prevent manipulation of young girls and women. Hannah worked with a similar group during her mission in the Philippines and she and I became involved in Love 146 when she returned.

What are your hours?

Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
