Suzie McKenzie runs the nonprofit Eagle’s Nest Ranch in Elizabeth.

The ranch’s mission is to connect people facing adversity and emotional trauma with horses. According to Suzie, “Spending time with the horses helps the healing begin.”

Suzie wanted to offer her services to military families and the name Eagle’s Nest resonated with her — the eagle being a military symbol and a nest representing a haven for nurturing and a place from which to soar when the time is right.

Horses are Suzie’s therapeutic animals of choice because, as she says, “They do not have an agenda but are in the moment and respond to each person according to the chemistry of the encounter and judging if they feel safe and can trust the individual. If a person is too aggressive or acting in an odd manner the horse will retreat.

This sends a loud message and behaviors change.”

Elizabeth to pave some dirt roads Years of deterioration have resulted in problems with drainage

Town of Elizabeth trustees approved a contract with Core Consultants during their Feb. 26 meeting, moving forward with the design and paving of several roads within Elizabeth that have historically been dirt roads.

Pine Ridge Road, South Pearl Street, Mobile Street and South Chestnut Street west of Elbert Street will get a makeover including curb and gutters, as well as paving the roads.

The streets have deteriorated over the years, causing problems with drainage. The improvements will come from the town’s streets capital improvement fund and the capital improvement project fund.

“Years ago it was the intent to pave those roads, but for whatever reason the project never got completed,” said Elizabeth Town Administrator Matt Kohrs. “Funding was passed by voter actions nearly two decades ago, and a lot has deteriorated so it’s time to design and pave them.”

Because the roads are not on flat

ground, Core Consultants will be tasked with designing the new roads to include proper drainage, driveways, curbs and sidewalks. Kohrs said it’s not known yet whether the design will include sidewalks on both sides, but there will not be landscaping included.

“The design stage is very important in the process,” said Kohrs. “But overall the project will be pretty basic with asphalt streets and curbs and sidewalks.”

The design phase of the project could take up to a year, and will cost $466,000. Kohrs and employees from Core Consultants will be reaching out to people who live on those streets, seeking input and concerns, as well as letting residents know what to expect when construction begins.

Once the design work is finished, Kohrs said they hope to begin the construction part of the project in spring of 2020, and finish by fall, depending on the weather. The hope is to be able to pave all the roads at the same time. Construction will cost about $4.5 million.

“I think people overall are going to be excited,” said Kohrs. “The roads need to be improved, with all the new growth. It needs to be done, and it’s the right thing to do.”

Lawmakers advance family leave measure Bill would create fund to accommodate those facing emergencies

A Colorado Senate committee has advanced an ambitious paid family leave bill that was substantially amended by its sponsors in an attempt to alleviate the concerns of most of the state’s major business chambers.

The Senate Finance Committee voted 4-3 on April 9 to send the bill to the Appropriations Committee.

The vote came after Democratic Sens. Faith Winter and Angela Williams, the bill’s Senate sponsors, offered a series of amendments, including an option allowing private employers to opt out of the program.

The bill would create a state-run paid family and medical leave program so employees can take time off to care for newborns, themselves or others in medical and other emergencies without worrying about their jobs.

Williams and Winter insist it’s a vital initiative as majority Demo-

crats and first-term Gov. Jared Polis are prioritizing a broad range of health issues.

Williams, a former small business owner, said many small businesses support the bill because it would increase worker productivity and retention.

She and Winter told a rally outside the statehouse before the April 9 hearing that the bill will allow mothers to nurture their newborns and cancer patients to keep up with chemotherapy without financial pressure to get back to work.

“Yes, there’s a cost to this policy — but there’s also a cost to not doing anything,” Winter said.

The federal Family Medical Leave Act generally allows employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave and retain their health coverage at firms with more than 50 workers.

The state bill would create a fund to pay a percentage of wages during a leave.

Several states, including California, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, run their own leave programs largely funded by payroll deductions, according to the National Council of State Legislatures.

Washington state and Washington, D.C., plan to launch programs in 2020.

State plans often exempt small employers and firms that offer

their own leave benefits. Some allow workers to opt in through payroll deductions, even if their employers don’t participate. Eligibility requirements vary, with some states requiring a year of employment before someone can take such leave.

The amended Colorado bill requires employees and employers to contribute on a 60%-40% basis to a state fund that, by fiscal year 2020-21, could reach $922 million, according to legislative analysts. Bond revenue would help launch the fund, to be administered by the Department of Labor and Employment.

The bill accommodates up to 12 weeks’ leave, with up to $1,000 a week in benefits, depending on income. Premium payments would begin in 2023, with the first benefits available in 2024.

Someone earning between $12,001 and $20,000 a year would pay from $38 to $64 a year into the fund. Employees earning $60,001 to $80,000 annually would pay from $192 to $256 a year. Employers would match those premiums.

Williams and Winter offered several concessions to the bill’s opponents. They extended the program’s start by two years. They added the employer opt-out provision — as long as the employer’s benefits at least match the state’s — while em-

ployees still can join. They changed the employer-employee contribution ratio from 50-50%.

They also eliminated a discount rate for local governments and public entities. Business leaders protested the discount unfairly shifted the cost burden to the private sector.

Winter acknowledged the changes likely won’t satisfy many business interests, even though the bill is championed by other groups such as Good Business Colorado and women’s advocacy organizations.

“I did not say this appeases the business community. They are opposed and remain opposed,” Winter said.

Loren Furman, a senior vice president with the Colorado Chamber of Commerce, had listed a host of concerns about the bill, including a requirement that users would only be required to be employed for 17 weeks rather than a year to be eligible.

Most other states with leave programs had a state disability program to build onto, but Colorado doesn’t, Furman noted.

Republican Sen. Paul Lundeen objected that an updated fiscal impact statement on the amended bill only was made available during the hearing. Williams and Winters vowed to keep working with the GOP on the legislation.

Eagle’s Nest Ranch moved to a larger property last summer allowing Suzie to enlarge the program and offer services to more people.

Suzie elaborates on the program’s fundamentals in an interview with the Elbert County News.

When and how did you move to the new location happen?

We bought the land last September, drawn to all the trees and the peace and quiet. A board member at Save the Cowboy ministry felt inspired to buy the land and house the program.

How has the move benefited your program?

We now have room for more sessions, horses and an indoor arena for training. The indoor arena provides for sessions even in the heat, wind and bad weather. If it is muddy outside and the footing is bad and dangerous for the horses, we can make space inside.

What type of sessions do you offer?

The sessions are 90 minutes, and last year we had 100 sessions and hope to triple that this year with additional volunteers. We do chores first and the balance of the time is spent with one of the horses learning some horsemanship (grooming, etc.) and doing ground work. We have group sessions and one-on-one sessions which give that personal attention. Sessions will begin again in May. What groups do you serve and how?

We serve children from the Sun Valley Youth Center in Denver at the ranch and we have from five to 25 kids each time. We continue to serve veterans and have worked with the Denver VA Medical Center, who have brought veterans to Eagle’s Nest for two or three years. We hope to take our horse, Hope, inside the VA hospital and other places where people might benefit.

How many horses do you have and how do you acquire them?

We have nine horses, some of which are adopted rescue horses. We have a secondary program, Horses in Hard-

ship, to help horses as we do people.

We got one animal from the Cow Hand Auction and adopted Hope from Hearts of Hope in Franktown.

How do you pair up horses with a person?

I tell each newcomer the horses’ stories and allow them to work with their horse of choice. Visitors gravitate to the horse whose story resonates with them and their experiences. For instance, Starlight, is smaller, quiet and less intimidating for children. Hope however, has had medical trauma which others can understand.

How many volunteers do you currently have and is there a need for more?

The Mission Continues is a national nonprofit organization of veterans who want to continue to serve and volunteers here. The American Legion is very supportive and they have served as honor guard for our flag dedication ceremony, manned their Burger Burn to feed volunteers, and we use their facility for our Christmas cards for troops event. We have over

50 volunteers but need volunteers who can come on regular basis. We want to establish a new program called the Monday Morning Men team of retired men to help with general maintenance.

What events are coming up?

We will have the First Responder Buckaroo Days this summer to honor and support the first responders community which includes firefighters, police, dispatchers and all other emergency personnel. For three years, we have invited the families to the ranch for a day of fun. Buckaroo Days are held one Saturday in June, July and August. Along with lunch, we have hay rides, outdoor games, paint the horses, horse rides, a devotional and crafts.

We are also holding our fifth anniversary summer celebration and concert on June 22 featuring Scott Helmer’s One-Man Rock and country show.

More than a thousand students from Columbine High School will embark on service projects throughout the community on April 20 for the third annual Day of Service.

“We wanted to take such a tragic day and try to turn it into something positive,” Scott Christy, Columbine’s principal, said. “It’s a great way to honor the day, honor the victims.”

In the aftermath of the April 20, 1999 tragedy, community members leaned on one another for hope and strength and were overwhelmed with an outpouring of kindness and support from people across the world.

‘Every morning, I wake up and recite their names’ Former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis

Frank DeAngelis stuck it out.

DeAngelis was principal of Columbine High School the day of the tragedy in 1999.

He stayed in that role until 2014.

“When I retired, I’d been here through the graduation of all the kids who were in elementary school gduring the tragedy,” DeAngelis DeAngelis said.

Today, DeAngelis is a consultant for Jefferson County Public Schools and a national speaker on recovering from tragedy. He’s thankful his work puts him back in touch with young people.

“I was a teacher, coach and principal for 35 years,” he said. “I missed the kids.”

Currently Columbine High has 13 teachers who were on staff in 1999 and five teachers who were students at Columbine that year. Several long-standing teachers recently retired.

Christy said educators like Frank DeAngelis, former principal, and the teachers who stuck with the school after the tragedy went through difficult times and should be recognized for their heroic actions.

“To stick with something like this and make it into what it is today is truly heroic,” he said. “It’s a model of resiliency.”

Although current students were not yet born when the tragedy struck, it is something that lingers within the culture of the school.

“The kids are aware,” Christy said. “But they don’t come here thinking this horrible thing happened. This is their home.”

Christy said the story of Columbine High is one of strength, resilience, community and family.

Christy said he hopes other

that swirled in the aftermath of the attack that Columbine’s culture pushed the killers to violence.

“Was there bullying? Yes,” he said.

But DeAngelis was one of a select few who viewed the “basement tapes,” lengthy video diaries made by the killers, before they were destroyed.

“In those tapes, they don’t talk about bullying. They talk about feeling godlike. Agents of natural selection. People who will be remembered forever.”

Instead, DeAngelis focuses his heart on the 13 victims killed in 1999.

“Every morning, I wake up and recite their names,” he said. “I’ll do that until the day I die.”

After 20 years, DeAngelis said, he hopes Columbine serves as a lesson that communities can heal after mass trauma.

“We’ll always remember that horrific day, but Columbine represents hope,” he said. “It’s not an easy road. There was a phrase that became popular after the tragedy: ‘We Are Columbine.’ And it’s true — we became one.” schools and organizations who have experienced mass shootings and tragedy can look at Columbine and see that they can come back strong if they work as a community.

The Day of Service is one way Columbine High is continuing that strength.

For the first 17 years after the tragedy, school was not held on April 20. Classes are still not held on that day, but for the past two years, the Day of Service has been.

Service projects vary from sprucing up the garden at the local elementary school to cleaning up nearby Clement Park and local trails. The day is centered on remembering the lives lost, reflecting on the lives forever changed and recommitting to the power of service in the community.

While projects are limited to Columbine High students and teachers, the school encourages the community and people across the world to participate in their own service projects on April 20.

It’s a challenge to make a recommitment — to kindness, to community, to serving others.

“Columbine is a symbol of resiliency,” Christy said.

COLUMBINE TRAGEDY: 20 YEARS LATER

‘Keep looking up. Keep moving ahead’ Dawn Anna and Bruce Beck, parents of student Lauren Townsend

A week after her daughter Lauren Townsend was killed at Columbine, Dawn Anna stood at a memorial event beside her husband, Bruce Beck. While the speaker said to bow their heads in prayer, Anna said something told her to look up.

She saw a red-tailed hawk circling above, its head cocked, with one eye on the crowd.

“Lauren was there letting us know it was OK,” said Beck, Lauren’s stepfather.

“It was a sign: Keep looking up,” Anna said. “Keep moving ahead.”

In the 20 years since Columbine, Anna and Beck have donated more than $300,000 to animal-related causes through Lauren’s Wildlife Fund, in honor of their daughter who felt a powerful connection to animals.

“Lauren worked at a small animal hospital, and every week she’d come home saying we needed to adopt this

Moving forward hasn’t been easy.

Elbert rancher named to Palmer Land Trust board STAFF REPORT

Alex Lasater, of Elbert County, was among the five new trustees recently named to the board of Palmer Land Trust, a conservation organization that serves the Arkansas River Basin.

Joining Lasater are Paula Chostner, of Pueblo County, Marc Dettenrieder, of Teller County, and Kristie Nackord and Blake Osborn, of Fremont County. The five new trustees expand the geographical representation of the board, helping to ensure that the entire region is well-served, according to a news release.

“We are honored to welcome these new board members,” Executive Director Rebecca Jewet said in the release.

“They have all demonstrated a commitment to our conservation mission, and their addition to our board brings important skills and experience to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of Southern Colorado communities.”

Operating his family’s ranch in Matheson, Lasater is the sole proprietor of the foundation herd of the Beefmaster cattle breed, believed to be the oldest closed herd of cattle in existence, the release said. He is a member of the Pikes Peak Cattleman’s Association, the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, and the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He also serves as a board member of the Beefmaster Education Endowment Fund.

The Palmer Land Trust serves southern Colorado and the Arkansas River Basin from headwaters regions to important farmland in the Lower Arkansas Valley. The organization focuses on maintaining the region’s working lands, expanding outdoor recreation opportunities and preserving scenic vistas, the release said.

Marijuana jobs hinder some citizenship bids Legal immigrants hit roadblocks due to employment violating federal law

Colorado officials are warning legal immigrants that working in the state’s marijuana industry could jeopardize their legal status, after two people said they were denied U.S. citizenship because of their jobs.

Although 10 states broadly allow its use and sale, federal law still bans marijuana and immigration authorities say they are bound to follow that prohibition when reviewing citizenship applications.

Attorneys representing the two legal immigrants from Colorado, and Denver officials, accused the Trump administration of quietly targeting immigrants seeking to work in the expanding field.

Immigration advocates said on April 4 that they have seen others denied citizenship based on past or ongoing work in cannabis-related jobs, but it is not clear how many cases exist.

Oswaldo Barrientos, one of those denied citizenship, said he began working in the industry in 2014. He was inspired by the research he had done

into medical products after his mother was diagnosed with skin cancer.

Barrientos, 30, said he was brought to the U.S. from El Salvador as an infant and was granted a green card when he was 13.

He said he didn’t anticipate any problems with his citizenship application. He is fluent in English and said he has no criminal history, pays taxes and graduated from high school. But during an interview in November, the immigration official focused on Barrientos’ job with a state-licensed company that grows marijuana, he said.

Weeks later, he received a letter from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services denying him because of his job, his lawyers said.

“I was shocked, appalled, sad,” Barrientos said. “It was a mixture of emotions. I had no idea I was going to be in this situation.”

Barrientos’ attorneys Aaron Elinoff and Bryce Downer, who specialize in immigration law in Colorado, said they also represent a woman whose citizenship application was denied because of a previous job at a marijuana dispensary. She asked not to be named publicly because of a new job in the medical field, they said.

“Frankly, these are the people we want to be citizens,” Elinoff said. “And the U.S. government is telling them no.

We don’t know how many people have been denied on the same issue.”

Kathy Brady, a senior staff attorney

with the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, said legal immigrants have reported similar denials in Colorado and Washington state, where marijuana also is legal.

Brady said she doesn’t know how many people have been denied citizenship for their work in the marijuana industry.

She advises people without U.S. citizenship to find work elsewhere unless federal law changes.

“Even if you have had a green card for 20 years, you had better not work in any aspect of this industry and you better not use marijuana,” Brady said.

Deborah Cannon, a spokeswoman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said the agency does not comment on individual cases. She defended denials based on involvement with marijuana, saying the agency must follow federal law that prevents its use or sale.

“Despite state law that may allow medical marijuana use, the Supreme Court has held that Congress’ authority under the Commerce Clause empowers it to prohibit drug distribution and possession, even if the prohibited activities are not also illegal under state law,” she said. “When adjudicating applicants for citizenship, the agency is required to apply federal law.”

The use and sale of marijuana for adults is broadly permitted in 10 states.

More than 30 states allow a variety of marijuana-based products for medical purposes.

Advocates have warned immigrants of the peril that using state-permitted

9 marijuana could do to their legal status for years and are expanding that message to include employment by mariE juana businesses.

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center began working with California’s employment agency to answer workers’ E questions this year. The Denver agency that regulates marijuana businesses recently told companies to warn new employees that their work could block citizenship applications.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock met with Barrientos and others last week before calling on U.S. Attorney General A William Barr to issue formal guidance on the issue.

“Denver understands the need for federal laws and regulations regarding citizenship and immigration, but we are seeing the heartbreaking effects that those federal laws and regulations are having on our residents,” Hancock wrote to Barr.

Barrientos said he plans to appeal the denial of his application. His attorneys L are also considering his options in federal court.

In the meantime, he is following their advice not to leave the country and risk being barred from re-entering.

He plans to keep his job and calls the government’s denial of his application “downright wrong.”

“I’m trying to help people,” he said.

“We want to work hard to live the American dream. That’s all I’ve ever E wanted.”

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

While property taxes and homeowners insurance must continue to be paid, the removal of an oftensubstantial mortgage payment allows homeowners to ease the pressure of stretched financial obligations.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

Another group of seniors that are benefiting from a reverse mortgage are those who own their homes free-andclear. The equity, or housing wealth, available to such homeowners is often substantial, and access to a portion of those funds can be life changing!

World lost in selfies is not a pretty picture

A

waiter goes back to a table and asks a young couple, “Is your food OK? You haven’t taken a picture of it yet?”

When the time comes for this decade to be characterized, it will be a snap.

It was estimated that each of us takes 10 digital photos a day, or 3,650 digital photos in a year. Times the number of people who have cellphones with built-in cameras, that’s 14 trillion photos worldwide annually.

Not all of them will be saved, however, for a very good reason that I will get to momentarily.

(When I say “we” I don’t mean me too. It’s just less accusatory than saying “you.”)

If a bear consumes a tourist who is trying to take a photo of himself with the bear, I tend to side with the bear.

When someone falls over a cliff while they are taking a selfie, I side with the cliff.

Every time I watch a major event on television, I see hundreds of amateur

photographers aiming their phones at the event.

Why? Because these moments are precious and few?

No. Because everyone else is doing it.

QUIET I just read an article to myself, and DESPERATION then I read it to the dog to get his reaction.

Harry is used to it by now, and usually just angles his head and stares at me.

The headline in the Washington Post said, “More are seekCraig Marshall ing surgery to look better in selfies.”

Smith There was a photo of a bunch of grinning idiots that went with the article, and the caption was, “The self-taken photograph is warping the confidence of many

younger people in unsettling ways.”

I am very, very glad I am not a younger people.

The article was written by Daria Hamrah, a plastic surgeon who has a practice in McLean, Va. Hamrah said the people who now come into her office are years younger than the ones who came into her office 10 years ago.

“There’s a reason for this radical and rapid change: selfies.”

She said one young woman came into her office and asked for “rounded feline eyes of the sort that some photo filters can add to selfies.”

When I read that to Harry, he angled his head to the other side.

“Once, a 20-year-old woman, having studied countless images of herself, said she needed a face-lift; no 20-yearold needs a face-lift.”

Harry and I both have prominent noses. (Keep in mind, he’s a dachshund.)

Hamrah is inundated with requests

for nose jobs. Know why?

A “A study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery found that selfies make noses look 30 percent larger than they are.”

In that case, mine would look like a holiday plantain, if I owned a mobile device that had a built-in camera, and took photos of myself. But I don’t.

A What would I do with them? I guess I could send them to my children.

But first, I’d have to get some children.

I concluded I’d rather not get some children, just to be able to send them selfies of Dear Old Dad. Not worth it.

Hamrah said a woman came into her office and said she wanted her A nose to look exactly like Meghan Markle’s.

Why? Nobody nose.

The people factor in a people, process and technology solution

t seems like this statement, “People, Process and Technology,” is the go-to response for many companies and organizations when asked about how they are planning to improve or grow their business. I mean it is used so often and has been for decades, so there must be something to it, right?

Or has it become cliché, overused, and the expected canned response given by someone who has been asked the question about how they will grow the business or how they have achieved success? It does have all of the elements for a strong answer; simple yet powerful, only four words, leads with people so it gets our attention, and technology means it must include innovation, which is intriguing.

It’s the “People” part of the response or statement that stands out to me.

Everyone has the best of intentions when they say, “People, Process and Technology,” but when they realize what the “People” part includes, it gets a little tricky, even hard to live up to for many organizations.

The process and technology part are the easy parts as we are always coming up with more efficient processes

and technological advances. There is a significant amount of work that needs to go into developing new processes, systems, software, and technology, so I am not suggesting otherwise. What I am saying is that my experience tells me that we often lose sight of the human WINNING element and the imWORDS portance of having the right culture and living out that culture where the people are recognized, rewarded, appreciated, and honored.

While working with companies across a multitude Michael Norton of industries I have seen organizations that have an operationally driven culture, or a sales driven culture, or a fiscally responsible driven culture.

Some endeavor to have all three, or maybe one dominant culture supported by subcultures within the company.

None of these are bad or wrong, they just sometimes miss the people driven culture.

executives may make bold statements such as, “Our people are our most important asset.” And that is awesome, truly awesome. If it were true. Executive and leaders want to do the right thing when it comes to their people.

They are not intentionally trying to mislead anyone, and they are not maliciously or purposely trying to ignore their people. The truth is they just have to make hard decisions. We all do, don’t we? The question is, where does the compromise stop? Hopefully, we don’t compromise our people.

In the quest for a return on investment, have we forgotten about the people who truly are the essence of success for any company or organization, large or small? We can have the greatest and most efficient processes and advanced technology that will drive our improvement and growth, but if we do not have the people who are willingly engaged and bought in to the vision or the “why,” the processes will not work.

“Our people are our most important asset.” When and where this is visible, honesty and integrity are the foundation of the company, open communication and feedback is encouraged,

s the tide of bland, boxy apartment complexes rolls through metro Denver amid its housing boom, sightseers looking for a respite need not roam far.

Historic buildings offer a change of pace from “empty architecture,” said Stephen Leonard, a history professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“We get a lot of variety from historical architecture that we have,” said Leonard, a widely known voice on Colorado history who has taught at MSU for five decades. “I think our sensibility, our ability to appreciate differences and to understand beauty

ture, which is really sort of a grab-bag term for the 1860s-90s,” Leonard said.

“Those buildings combine different styles. They sort of reflect the exuberance of a nouveau riche class. There’s not much restraint in them.”

What followed was a move away from that style, “almost a reaction against too much ornamentation,” Leonard said, “that maybe reflects a more mature country and state.”

Curious eyes can find styles from that era and beyond around the Denver region. Here’s a look at a few buildings still standing.

Westminster Bell Tower In 1986, the City of Westminster wanted to celebrate its 75th birthday with a “grand public monument,” according to city spokeswoman Jodie Carroll.

The city decided to incorporate it into the design of the new city hall, which was set to open in 1988.

“Since our city name is Westminster, staff thought it fitting to have a grand bell tower such as Big Ben in Westminster, London,” Carroll said. “An entourage of distinguished persons from Westminster — including the Lord Mayor herself — were present for the groundbreaking of the new city hall and bell tower.”

The tower’s design, including the pyramid at the top, were taken from Big Ben. The city wasn’t named for the area in London, though: The area’s original name, Harris Park, was changed in the early 1900s to honor Westminster University, which was where the Belleview Christian School building now stands, Carroll said. That’s just a few minutes southeast of the bell tower.

The tower stands at 4800 W. 92nd Ave. in Westminster.

Highlands Ranch Mansion A small farmhouse built in 1891 eventually became the Highlands Ranch Mansion, a public property surrounded by historic barns, ranch houses, corrals and pastures.

“Through the years, each owner expanded the residence, adding their own style,” said Sherry Eppers, spokeswoman for the Highlands Ranch Metro District. “The unique details from different architectural

The mansion was a residence until the late 1970s, and many Denver-area socialites called it home, Eppers said. Today, it’s a gathering place for celebrations, weddings and private events. The property was conveyed to the metro district in 2010.

“The mansion is a link to Colorado’s rich history,” Eppers said. “Residents enjoy learning about the history of the mansion’s families and the tradition of ranching in the area.”

the former Loretto Heights College building is visible for miles around in the metro area.

The 70-acre campus at 3001 S. Federal Blvd. was once a Catholic college.

First named Loretto Heights Academy, it grew out of an effort by the Sisters of Loretto dating back to the late 1800s. Its reddish-brown administration building with a tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The campus became Teikyo Loretto Heights University in 1989 and Colorado Heights University in 2009. It closed around fall 2017 after an insufficient student population made it difficult to sustain the school, according to the university.

Concerned about the historical value of the campus and its future, several local residents held meetings throughout 2017, and meetings were also held in 2018 and this January.

The developer who bought the property from the university, Westside Investment Partners, has announced it will renovate Pancratia Hall on the campus — once home to a dormitory — into affordable housing units, according to a January news release.

Westside has also said it is committed to preserving the administration building, the adjoining chapel and the cemetery, where dozens of nuns were interred.

Jefferson County government building First called “a veritable Taj Mahal” by detractors who opposed the county’s spending on the expensive building, the Jefferson County Admin-

istration and Courts Facility is now known lovingly by county employees as “the Taj,” according to Ronda Frazier, county archivist.

The county needed a new building amid population growth. Between 1972 and 1990, the courts’ caseload increased by almost 500 percent, and services had to be scattered throughout the county, Frazier said.

“The new building provided space for almost all of the county’s operations and was designed to provide services to citizens all in one location,” Frazier said.

The large, dome-anchored building at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden opened in 1993, with architecture meant to mesh with the surrounding landscape. The wheat-colored brick matches the clay in nearby terrain, and the maroon granite used was inspired by the soil and indigenous sandstone, Frazier said.

“It was designed to reflect the life and architecture of the county’s namesake, Thomas Jefferson,” Frazier said. “The central atrium of the building was styled after the rotunda Jefferson designed for the University of Virginia and also the Jefferson Memorial rotunda in Washington, D.C.” But its most interesting aspect for Frazier is its butterfly-like shape when viewed from above, and its curved “wings” makes it appear smaller than it is.

The building “was designed by the architects to create a focal point,” Frazier said, “for what is a big, diverse governmental organization.”

Call not to name mass killers gaining traction Criminologists give support to movement, citing attackers’ desire for infamy

A few months after teen shooters killed 12 classmates and her father at Columbine High School, Coni Sanders was standing in line at a grocery store with her young daughter when they came face to face with the magazine cover.

It showed the two gunmen who had carried out one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

Sanders realized that few people knew much about her father, who saved countless lives. But virtually everyone knew the names and the tiniest of details about the attackers who carried out the carnage.

In the decades since Columbine, a growing movement has urged news organizations to refrain from naming the shooters in mass slayings and to cease the steady drumbeat of biographical information about them. Critics say giving the assailants notoriety offers little to help understand the attacks and instead fuels celebrity-style coverage that only encourages future attacks.

The 1999 attack at Columbine, in Jefferson County west of Littleton, continues to motivate mass shooters, including the two men who recently stormed their former school in Brazil, killing seven people.

The Columbine shooters, in particular, have an almost cult-like status, with some followers seeking to emulate their trench-coat attire and expressing admiration for their crime, which some have attributed to bullying. The gunman in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting kept a detailed journal of decades’ worth of mass shootings.

stead, he blamed over-the-top coverage that includes irrelevant details about the killers, such as their writings and their backgrounds, that “unnecessarily humanizes them.”

“We sometimes come to know more about them — their interests and their disappointments — than we do about our next-door neighbors,” Fox said.

Law enforcement agencies have taken a lead, most recently with the Aurora, Illinois, police chief, who uttered just once the name of the gunman who killed five co-workers and wounded five officers last month.

“I said his name one time for the media, and I will never let it cross my lips again,” Chief Kristen Ziman said in a Facebook post.

Some media, most notably CNN’s Anderson Cooper, have made a point of avoiding using the name of these gunmen.

The Associated Press names suspects identified by law enforcement in major crimes. However, in cases in which the crime is carried out seeking publicity, the AP strives to restrict the mention of the name to the minimum needed to inform the public, while avoiding descriptions that might serve a criminal’s desire for publicity or self-glorification, said John Daniszewski, the AP’s vice president and editor-at-large for standards.

Aftermath of Aurora For Caren and Tom Teves, the cause is personal. Their son Alex was among those killed in the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora in 2012.

They were both traveling out of state when the shooting happened, and it took 15 hours for them to learn the fate of their son. During those hours, they heard repeatedly about the shooter but virtually nothing about the victims.

Not long after, they created the No Notoriety movement, encouraging media to stick to reporting relevant facts rather than the smallest of biographical details. They also recommend publishing images of the shooter in places that are not prominent, steering clear of “hero” poses or images showing them holding weapons, and not publishing any manifestos.

“We never say don’t use the name. What we say is use the name responsibly and don’t turn them into anti-heroes,” Tom Teves said.

“Let’s portray them for what they are: They’re horrible human beings that are completely skewed in their perception of reality, and their one claim to fortune is sneaking up behind you and shooting you.”

Others, such as masonry work or auto mechanics need only to go through a trade school that caters to the specific field. This turns into a certification of completion rather than an expensive degree at a university. The costs difference in education is huge.

Job satisfaction: There is a certain sense of pride in getting your hands dirty and building, creating or maintaining something.

According to a 2018 Harris Poll, which surveyed blue-collar workers across the nation, 86 percent said they are satisfied/happy with their jobs.

The property included a log house, according to horticulturist Jennifer Trunce, who spoke to the Littleton Garden Club about Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield Farms, the now-700-acre property adjoining Chatfield State Park and Reservoir. It was set aside after the disastrous 1965 flood, which affected a large part of the south suburban area.

The Army Corps of Engineers controls the land and declared it a floodplain where no new building is permitted. Denver Botanic Gardens was allowed to manage the land, designated as Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. Existing buildings were grandfathered in … The original thought was to build a huge arboretum, with more varieties of trees than anywhere between Chicago and the West Coast.

Gradually a native plant garden developed, the historic farms were restored and a variety of defined types of gardens were planted instead, creating a fine spot for families and individuals to explore — during special events or just on any day.

Frank Hildebrand, a German immigrant, was one of the first pioneers to settle in the area, and Deer Creek was the only source of water, running through the length of the property.

The Hildebrands built a larger house around the cabin, then in 1915, a separate large farmhouse, which stands today. A milking barn and other outbuildings were added. A cutting garden is planted near it and heirloom gardens.

Son Francis Hildebrand continued with the farming and added a granary, wood and blacksmith’s shops and ice house.

Francis also moved the Deer Creek Schoolhouse onto the farm when Chatfield Dam was built — or it would have been submerged. It is used as a visitors center, for classes, for brides and programs …

The owners were evicted by the Army Corps of Engineers after the 1965 flood, as were the owners of the nearby Green Ranch, known for raising thousands of white Peking ducks, which they shipped to restaurants across the nation. The two-story, white Green House was renovated in 2016 and now holds 30 offices, Trunce said.

A Wayne Christian Garden honors the first director appointed in the 1970s to begin organizing this new operation.

Special gardens surround the farms, including the Mary Washburn Orchard and Heritage Garden. Some fields are cultivated with corn and pumpkins

— see the Big Pumpkin Festival in October — and seven acres are devoted to crops for the Chatfield CSA (community supported agriculture) program, which supplies regular boxes of vegetables, fruits and flowers to subscribers and farm stands. Trunce said a new master plan is in process for this increasingly busy site. A map on the website shows the Janice Form Memorial Dye Garden, established by members of the Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild, who manage it, grow dye plants and teach how to dye yarns and fabrics. Also nearby: a cut flower garden, herb garden, prairie garden, iris garden (one of the larger collections in the nation.), plant select garden, market garden. The large lavender garden matured enough to start holding a Lavender Festival last year, which drew a huge crowd and will be repeated.

One is allowed to bring food into the garden, so families may want to consider a summer picnic lunch at this pleasant spot.

Beyond the farms and developed gardens is a large natural area with three clearly marked trails towards the wetlands, where native plants, birds and wildlife await.
