‘We’re looking forward to next year’ Public safety means Stampede will not be held this June

The Elizabeth Stampede will not be held this year, and Jace Glick, president of the event’s board of directors, said the decision to cancel the town’s biggest gathering was disappointing, but board members knew it was necessary because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Early on, the county health officials summoned me, and I sat down with all of them and they told unequivocally at that time what was going to be coming down in the coming months,” said Glick. “As a board we sat down and started discussing several different scenarios, and all agreed that public safety was our number one priority.”

The Stampede, which was slated for the first week of June, usually includes a PRCA rodeo, concerts, a parade and family activities. The Stampede began with amateur rodeos at Casey Jones Park as early as 1937, and the first official Stampede was held in 1966.

Just as Gov. Jared Polis invoked Americans’ sacrifice in World War II when he announced Colorado’s stay-at-home order nearly two weeks earlier, he again called up the dire and communal spirit of that era in asking Coloradans to keep living life at home for half a month more.

In a statewide address from the governor’s residence in Denver broadcast through television and radio, Polis announced he was extending the order through April 26. He acknowledged the feelings of Coloradans who may be distressed or angry and nodded to the hard decisions business owners are being forced to make during the shutdown.

“But if the choice is between a temporary shutdown and a catastrophic loss of life, the choice is clear,”

HELP AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED Colorado families who have encountered economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for assistance.

Families can apply for the Colorado Works County Emergency Disaster Program through Colorado PEAK, an online service that allows qualified Coloradans to screen and apply for medical, food, cash and early childhood assistance.

Among the requirements are that a family’s annual combined gross income must be below $75,000 and the household must contain at least one child 18 or younger.

Under the order, Coloradans can leave home only for essential activities, such as shopping for groceries, exercising outdoors or caring for a vulnerable person in another household. Employees in “critical businesses” may still go to work in a long list of industries such as grocery and liquor stores, restaurants and bars for delivery and take-out, health care, infrastructure, agriculture, food banks and many more.

Polis framed it as a “patriotic duty” to continue to sacrifice to prevent more lives from being put in jeopardy.

“Right now, we need to dig deep into our souls to muster the resolve, the courage, the fortitude to carry on,” Polis said, referencing Americans’ forebears who sacrificed materials for war equipment in World War II when “everyday citizens became heroes.”

Coloradans efforts so far aren’t in vain: A month ago, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state was doubling every 1 1/2 days, and as of early April, cases are doubling roughly every six days, Polis said.

Colorado officials have attributed the change to earlier state actions such as the closure of dine-in service at bars and restaurants and the restrictions on the number of people who can gather at once. The impact the stay-at-home order is having on the spread of COVID-19 was to be-

come clear around April 7 due to how long symptoms can take to appear.

Roughly, 80% to 90% of those who become infected with COVID-19 virus won’t need medical assistance, but between 10% and 20% percent will need hospitalized care, and Colorado is in a race against the clock to bolster health care capacity for those who will need it, Polis said.

It could be the life of Coloradans’ parents, grandparents or friends — or even their own lives — who are in danger, Polis said.

The governor again repeated his goal of mass testing larger numbers of Coloradans for COVID-19, referencing nations such as South Korea. He wants Colorado to be able to accurately quarantine individuals “instead of quarantining an entire society,” Polis said.

Polis mentioned federal guidance to continue social distancing measures — a term that means reducing faceto-face interaction — until April 30.

Hours before Polis’ address, Denver announced it is extending its stay-athome order until April 30.

“If there’s any way to safely end it sooner (than April 26), I will,” Polis said. But he added that if Coloradans don’t comply well enough, the order could extend longer.

Polis thanked the Coloradans who are making an effort to stay home.

He implored Coloradans to also wear cloth face coverings such as scarves or made from old T-shirts — guidance he issued days earlier.

Movies make sense in a world that doesn’t

uring these strange days and nights, many of you are watching films to pass time.

So am I: mostly comedies, mysteries, and, believe it or not, love stories.

Yes, I am a bread crumb-encrusted old frog, but deep down (very deep) I am a romantic, bread crumb-encrusted old QUIET frog, with some love DESPERATION story suggestions.

I can’t, however, recommend “Love Story,” the 1970 movie based on Erich Segal’s book. Segal was a Harvard, Yale, and Princeton professor who should have known better. I hope Craig Marshall he grimaced all the way to the bank.

Smith Everyone knows about “Casablanca,” so I will skip it.

The same goes for “When Harry Met Sally” and “Titanic.”

One of my favorites is “Amélie,” directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and

starring Audrey Tautou. It is exceptionally clever, visually exquisite (note: reds and greens throughout), and has a perfect soundtrack.

“Amélie” was my introduction to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a female Bo Diddley.

Have you seen Travelocity’s garden gnome commercials? The marketing team swiped the idea from “Amélie.”

A drama released in 1946 is guaranteed to make your eyes blurry when Frederic March returns from the war and surprises Myrna Loy. “The Best Years of Our Lives” includes an unforgettable scene of a B-17 and B-25 graveyard.

Look for: armless Homer (Harold Russell) asks Butch (Hoagy Carmichael) if he knows “Lazy River,” when Butch is playing piano in his Boone City bar.

Carmichael composed “Lazy River.”

Boone City is based on Cincinnati.

“Random Harvest” isn’t on my list, nor is “Wuthering Heights,” but both of them get votes from other film critics.

Is it possible to fall in love with a painting of a woman? Ask Dana An-

drews who bids on a presumed dead woman’s portrait in “Laura,” also starring Gene Tierney.

Taking the presumed dead infatuation further, I recommend Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” James Stewart falls in love with Kim Novak twice: once when she portrays Madeleine and then when she reappears as Judy.

John Wayne’s wooden acting goes well with Margaret O’Hara’s feisty performance in John Ford’s “The Quiet Man,” brilliantly filmed (except for the annoying rear projections) in Ireland.

“A Star is Born”? Not for me but for many others. Every era has its own, going back to Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, up to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

How about some offbeat love stories?

Top of my list is “Harold and Maude,” starring Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, and Cat Stevens’ songs.

At the time of filming, Gordon was 51 years older than Cort.

Cat Stevens appears in a funeral scene; look closely.

The strangest love story? “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Wor-

rying and Love the Bomb.” It starred Peter Sellers who portrayed Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, United States President Merkin Muffley, and Dr. Strangelove.

Strongly recommended: “Roman Holiday.” If you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil the ending. Audrey Hepburn co-starred with a man her own age, unlike “Love in the Afternoon” with Gary Cooper (Cooper was 28 years older than Hepburn), or “Sabrina” with Humphrey Bogart (Bogart was 30 years older than Hepburn).

Hepburn, by the way, was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston.

There’s “Say Anything,” starring Ione Skye and Jon Cusack.

Skye is Scottish singer Donovan’s daughter. Donovan had hits with “Catch the Wind,” “Mellow Yellow” and “Jennifer Juniper.”

Finally, Charlie Chaplin’s love for the blind girl in “City Lights” is incomparable.

Someday when this is all over ...

I

n last week’s column I made a recommendation to replace the word react with the word respond as sometimes we never just react, we either overreact and make things worse, or we underreact and don’t do enough. But when we respond, we tend to think a little more clearly and WINNING do exactly what is WORDS needed.

I have seen so many posts on social media where people pose the question, “When this quarantine is all over, what will be the first thing you do?” And I have seen some really funny replies, and Michael Norton some pretty scary replies. After enjoying a laugh, I started to think about the question again.

What will I do when this quarantine is all over?

After running through several things that I thought I might do, it

occurred to me that I couldn’t really think of that one thing that I really wanted to do. There are just too many unknowns right now. So instead, I focused my energy on what I can still do during the quarantine. And what I want to do now is give as much hope and encouragement as I can to as many people as possible so that I can make a difference in some way.

Years from now people will be talking about this time that we are all going through. The novel coronavirus and its impact on our society, the economy, and sadly, the loss of life. They will also talk about how we as the people who lived through it responded. And right now, we are the authors of what people will say in the future. Other than maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and washing our hands we really can’t control what is happening around us. But we can control what is happening within us and our homes.

A huge shout-out to the medical community and everyone on the front lines, and to each and every first re-

through social media. Access to information is everywhere. Artificial intelligence picks up on what we look at while we are online. It picks up on trends and then fills our social media feed with more of the same content.

So, if we are reacting and negatively ranting in our own posts, we will continue to see other negativity being posted. However, if we respond by looking at, and “liking” posts of a positive nature, we will continue to see uplifting content filling us with even greater hope and encouragement that we can share and pass along.

sponder out there, we appreciate you all so very much. We don’t call a first responder a first reactor, do we? No, we call them a first responder. When we are given medication that doesn’t agree with us, we typically say that we are having a negative reaction. However, when we are given a medication that helps us to feel better, we typically say that we are responding favorably.

Do you see the difference? We can choose to respond favorably.

When this is all over, people will not only talk about us years from now, they will be talking about us while we are still in it and as soon as it is all over. They will see how we responded and how we handled ourselves during this crisis. Did we stress ourselves out, did we get angry and cranky, did we create bigger problems? Or did we find peace and patience, did we take full advantage of our time together with family, did we do what we could to help others and volunteer? Did we react or did we respond?

Nearly 400 cowboys and cowgirls from across the states travel to compete in the PRCA rodeo, and more than 200 volunteers plan and produce the Stampede each year.

“If there was any chance that even one person would get sick from attending the event, we weren’t willing to take that risk,” said Lea Anne Russel, marketing chairperson for the Stampede board. “Going forward in any form this year would jeopardize our ability to have a rodeo next year and in the future, and we want to be a part of this community for years to come.”

The board had to consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their local sponsors and supporters as well.

“We have some very loyal sponsors, but right now a lot of those

“The Elizabeth Park and Recreation District has acquired all the acreage that surrounds the stampede grounds,” said JC Cook, president of the Elizabeth Park and Recreation District. “This land will not be developed, it will remain a large treed park in the middle of this town, no matter how big this town gets.”

One of the first orders of business, according to Cook, is to get bids for rebuilding bathrooms at the Stampede grounds. Cook anticipates the space, which has doubled the size of the park at Evans and Casey Jones, will be open for public use within the next 30 days, and will include a nature trail for hikers, bikers and equestrian riders. businesses are suffering, and we just don’t know what it would look like come June,” said Glick.

Although disappointed, Glick said the hundreds of volunteers and board members are not defeated, and are already planning for a spectacular event in 2021.

“While we’re disappointed, our excitement hasn’t changed a bit,” said Glick. “We’re not defeated by this, and we’re looking forward to next year more than ever.”

The Elizabeth Stampede Foundation, which was formed in 2010, is a branch of the Stampede Rodeo organization, and they are reaching out to help community members through the next few months by providing assistance to those in need.

The foundation has awarded scholarships, donated to charities and offered financial assistance.

“The goal of the foundation is to preserve the Western legacy of providing support and assistance to

those in need,” said Russell. “We’re here to help in any way we can.”

The Elizabeth Stampede Foundation is also continuing their Stampede to Read program, adapting it to accommodate the distance learning that all schools have instituted. The program usually entails Glick and other board members going into local elementary schools and reading to students. Starting April 17, Glick will read his favorite book, “Hank the Cowdog,” on their Facebook page. All elementary students, including those that are homeschooled, are invited to listen to the story, then submit a drawing or write their own story and submit it to the foundation. Their names will be entered into a drawing and those chosen will receive gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses.

AARP grant program extends application deadline STAFF REPORT

The application deadline for the 2020 AARP Community Challenge grant program has been extended to May 15.

In its fourth year, the grant funds “quick-action” projects that spark change across the country, according to a news release. The program is part of AARP’s nationwide work on Livable Communities. Grants can range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to several thousand, or tens of thousands for larger projects.

“We are thrilled to bring this grant opportunity back to Colorado in 2020 and we encourage all eligible organizations to apply,” Bob Murphy, AARP Colorado state director, said in the release.

The AARP Community Challenge is open to nonprofits and government entities. Other types of organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. AARP will prioritize projects with permanent or temporary solu-

Coming in sixth for the five-seat race was Greg Tisdall with 149 votes in unofficial results.

The Town of Elizabeth will continue to collect votes from veterans and others out of town who qualify, for the next eight days, as well as some voters who were sent letters of signature verification. The number of votes coming in within the next eight days could be enough to swing the recall of Mayor Vasquez and trustee Payne the other direction, as happened during the recall election held in December.

Unofficial results then listed trustee June Jurczewsky remaining on the board, but after all ballots were officially counted, she was ousted and replaced by Ronald Weaver.

Turn your garden into a thriving success with help from the master gardeners at CSU Extension

n Colorado, there’s a program comprised of 2,500 master gardeners across all 64 counties that develop science-based research and information, making it where you don’t have to spend hours upon hours researching how to develop and be successful at growing a garden.

Through the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension program, certified experts do the research, planting and studies to help you be successful in growing any kind of plant no matter where you live in the state. The master gardeners are available by phone, email and in person (when home-based orders are not in place). These gardeners can diagnose problem soils, identify viruses and insect issues through photos and lab testing.

“When it comes to the Extension program, we like to say why Google it?” said John Murgel, the CSU extension program associate for horticulture in Douglas County. “A Google search provides crazy results that takes you all over the map.

With Extension, you get one-on-one interaction, fact sheets on everything local. It’s an awesome resource.”

All of the master gardeners with the Extension program are certified horticulturist. Through a variety of outlets, including blogs, they provide help to gardeners with watering, planting guidelines, understanding sunlight, Colorado’s crazy weather patterns and explain what the elevation here means to seeds you put into the soil.

Patti O’Neil, horticulturist and urban food systems coordinator for CSU Extension in Jefferson County, said they want gardens to thrive and want residents to know they are here to help at every stage of gardening from planning, planting, growing to tips on how to store food after the harvest.

“One of our biggest fears is that a resident starts a garden without assistance, they fail and never come back to it again,” she said. “We want gardeners to plant vegetables, flowers and everything. We are here to make any garden, whether it’s here on the front range or up in the mountains, succeed.”

O’Neil said when home-based rules are not in

place, the Jefferson County offices can provide inperson diagnosis of plant problems and test soil in the lab. Classes are also offered in most counties.

With soil, we stress that it’s the most important aspect of getting started,” O’Neil said. “You can’t always just dig in some dirt and be successful.

We test soil in labs and can provide guidance on nutrients needed to get you started.”

O’Neil said with 155 master gardeners available in Jefferson County alone, they are always on hand to answer questions, help diagnose and solve problems and provide information.

“Call us with any questions,” O’Neil said. “Don’t be afraid to asks a lot of questions. We want to help with all of it.”

Murgel said when it comes to weather and landscape, Colorado is diverse. The master gardeners with CSU Extension take into account all Colorado landscapes and provide fact sheets on what to plant and when to avoid frost, weather issues or what to consider in regards to altitude.

“We understand that now isn’t a good time to plant tomatoes or squash, you want to wait for the heat,” Murgel said. “But radish doesn’t always do as well when it’s overheated, which means now is the time to plant some of your vegetables. Our websites and master gardeners can provide all of that information that is local to the area residents live.”

The CSU Extension program was established

by Congress in 1914, authorizing land-grant universities to get research-based information out to the public. Besides landscape and gardening the certified experts provide free information in agriculture, 4-H development, animal health, drought conditions, renewable energy, natural resources and food safety and health.

The value of gardening goes beyond what grows in the ground

ardening is a great way to improve the community, beautify a yard or provide great-tasting fruits and vegetables. However, going beyond the roots, gardening has proven to be beneficial both mentally and physically.

Studies continue to show that gardening goes beyond the plants and provides true physical and mental health benefits.

John Murgel, a horticulturist with the Colorado State University Extension program in Douglas County, said for him, gardening provides connection to human history and human life.

“Gardening connects me to the outdoors, to the plants and wild birds and native bees that live in my neighborhood,” he said. “Depending on which plants I’m using at the moment, (gardening) can be everything from childhood memories from family heirloom plants or veggies to people in other ages and in other continents going back centuries or further. They give me deep perspective.”

On the physical side, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says gardening is a great way to get exercise.

Gardening can decrease risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke,

depression, colon cancer and premature death.

Some of the top benefits of gardening include: A natural source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D increases calcium levels, which provides support for bones and the immune system. For older adults, increased Vitamin D can help improve serum levels.

Reducing stress: Gardening has proven to be a calming activity for those suffering from anxiety. Whether gardening alone, or with a group, digging in the dirt, planting, growing and harvesting can help create a calm.

Good exercise: Gardening is a good way to increase physical activity without feeling the pain of a full workout. The CDC recommends being active for at least 2.5 hours a week to strengthen muscles and improve bone health and circulation.

A good after-retirement activity: For many aging adults, retirement can become lonely. Gardening has served as a good hobby and way to engage with neighbors and feel a sense of accomplishment as the garden grows.

Decrease in dementia risk: A variety of studies have found that gardening helps the mind, decreasing the risk of dementia through physical activity.

Creates a healthier diet: By growing your own food, which means vegetables, gardeners tend to have better diets, which improves weight, diabetes risk, and lower blood pressure.

A different kind of daily grind Working from home presents unfamiliar challenges

Some people find that working from home goes just fine for them.

But Golden resident Eric Rasch says he isn’t one of them.

That’s why, after a year and a half of working from home, Rasch said he was excited to begin a new position working out of an office as a salesman for Colorado Commercial and Residential Painting in early March.

“With no office and no officemates to shoot the breeze with around the water cooler, I kind of started to go a little stir-crazy,” he said.

So it was especially disappointing for Rasch when he learned after just two weeks of working in the office that he would now need to work from home due to COVID-19. It’s a challenge that has meant not only getting back into an old lifestyle and routine he never wanted to return to but also having to adjust to some new complications.

other workers have found themselves adjusting to doing so for the first time as offices and work places have closed in response to the epidemic. Among them is Catlin Latta, another Golden resident whose employer, oil and gas company BP, has shifted her to working from home.

Doing so, she said, has required her to adapt to her new situation by developing new skills that range from keeping her phone out of immediate reach to learning to keep a mental separation between work and leisure time when there is no longer a physical separation between them.

“The first week I sort of completely on accident worked much longer hours because my whole set-up is right in my living room area where I spend most of my time, so it became so tempting to just sit down at my computer and keep working because I have things to do,” she said.

Since then, she’s begun making more of a conscious effort to stop working at around the same time she typically does in the office, and she now tries to commit to keeping her weekends as

personal time, even if she isn’t able to go out and enjoy her typical activities.

COVID-19 has also meant big work life changes for Jennifer Barr, the owner of Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery in Centennial. The shop is currently closed to walk-in customers (although customers can still come by to pick up pre-ordered custom cakes).

Because of that, Barr has shifted to only going to the shop a couple times a week rather than every day (her employees are now doing most of the cake making) and doing most of her sales and marketing work from home.

She says that while the adjustment hasn’t been too bad overall, she has made one major adjustment in an effort to substitute for one of her favorite aspects of working in the shop.

“The customer interaction is the piece I’ve really enjoyed about working in the shop, so now I’ve been trying to do as much as I can over the phone versus via email to try to keep that human interaction as much as I can,” she said.

But despite that effort, Barr said there is no substitute for being in the shop day in and day out.

“I’m definitely looking forward to getting back in there and decorating cakes and seeing customers in-person and the other things I really enjoy,” she said.

Scammers are using the checks the federal government is scheduled to send as part of the coronavirus stimulus package to encourage Coloradans to share bank account numbers or other sensitive personal information, according to a news release issued March 30 by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.

“As Congress worked to complete the first COVID-19 economic stimulus package, scammers were already working to deceive Coloradans and take advantage of those eagerly awaiting federal relief,” Weiser said in a news release. “It’s important to remember that the federal government hasn’t issued a single stimulus check yet, and will not call you on the phone to ask for sensitive personal information. Anyone who calls claiming to be able to send money now — and asks for your personal information — is a scammer.”

Following are some ways to protect

yourself from government check scams: * Don’t respond to texts and emails about checks from the government.

Parents will receive up to $500 for each child under age 17.

Those eligible for a payment will receive a payment directly from the IRS. The IRS specifies on its website that no sign-up is required, and there is no need to call. The agency will post additional information, when it’s available, at www.irs.gov/coronavirus.
