Painting ‘from the inside out’ Local artist finds inspiration after serious head injury

James Holmes admits he never used to be able to “connect” with abstract art.

The 56-year-old Parker man said he never appreciated the art form.

Abstract concepts, to him, a 17-year board member of the Denver Art Museum, never existed in his mind.

Holmes is the CEO and executive director of the Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation in Sedalia and has a passion for riding horses. Standing in the Deep Space Lounge in downtown Parker March 19, Holmes said he never would have guessed he would be here, talking about how he became an abstract artist and about his pieces hanging on the wall for his first art show.

“I could never really think abstractly before,” Holmes said. “It wasn’t the way I was wired.”

In February 2018, Holmes broke his neck after being bucked from a horse on a day trip to Cherry Creek State Park. He also sustained a closed head injury, when a blow to the head causes the brain to knock against the skull.

He received emergency surgery and doctors warned him he could become

Holmes came out of the procedure with little pain and few complications. But his neck was stiff, his head felt fuzzy and he couldn’t ride horses for most of the following spring and summer.

Holmes’ wife, Wendy, said that was the beginning of him discovering his new passion.

said Wendy Holmes, who works as the director of communications and public affairs for Douglas County. “For him to be in a position where he could not be with his horses, could not be active for so long — I told him that I thought it might be good for him if he couldn’t ride his horses, maybe he should paint them.”

injuries often experience some kind of personality change, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most eventually revert back to their old selves, while others don’t ever quite come back.

Holmes said since his injury some of his personality has changed. He can’t improvise on guitar like he used to. His brain felt “foggy” during much of his recovery and does, on occasion, still today.

And, somehow, he found a talent for abstract painting.

As a child, he enjoyed drawing and painting certain objects, but hadn’t created much art since then. After the accident, he found peace in creating abstract art, where shape and form are simplified.

“All of this stuff is a miracle of the accident,” Holmes said. “Hopefully, the gateway is open and now I’m feeding it enough to where it will become part of my normal `artistic diet.’ ” In most of his paintings, Holmes finds people. They don’t usually appear to him at first. The figures only appear hours later, when Holmes “meets the painting in the morning.”

In one painting he sees a woman’s face. Another shows an angel almost hidden, surrounded by blue and white paint. It’s unintentional, Holmes said. Holmes has found his subconscious come to life through his work.

Roger Evans honored with Republican award Fifth-generation rancher awarded with lifetime achievement award at Elbert County Lincoln Day Dinner STAFF REPORT

Roger Evans, a fifth-generation rancher who grew up just outside of Elizabeth, was posthumously honored with the Republican Lifetime Achievement Award at the Elbert County Lincoln Day Dinner, according to a news release.

“Our award recipient was born on July 7, 1951, in Elbert County, a fifth-generation rancher, and raised just outside of the town of Elizabeth,” Scott Wills, former Republican chairman and longtime friend of Evans, said in his presentation at the dinner.

“He was a lifetime Republican and he spent his life serving the community and impacting the lives of everyone he met.

“This man encouraged me to get involved in the caucus process when we first moved to Elbert County over 20 years ago. He continued to encourage me, and many of you, for the rest of

Sheriff unveils new logo on patrol cars Norton makes good on campaign promise

Lance Tomey, 42, noticed something different when he traveled through Elbert County for work recently — Elbert County Sheriff ’s Office patrol cars were sporting new red, white and blue logos on their sides.

“I always thought there were just a few patrol officers when I drove through Elbert county,” said Tomey.

“I saw several last time I went through, and they’re pretty noticeable with the stickers on the cars. I wonder how many times I’ve actually passed or been followed by a county deputy in the past and didn’t know it.”

Elbert County Sheriff Tim Norton said the newly marked cars began rolling out several weeks ago, and now every daily patrol car in the fleet is clearly marked with the new logos.

Previous administrations had run an unmarked fleet of patrol cars, and that, according to Norton, needed to change.

“One of the biggest things I heard during the campaign that people weren’t happy about was the unmarked cars,” said Norton. “I do have some undercover cars and cars for

Designing the new logo was a team effort, according to Norton, and has been receiving great reviews from community members.

“We really wanted it to pop — we wanted people to be able to see it,” said Norton. “We ran it by a couple of

Tailoring your resume to fit your sector Don’t stray from the job description: While it’s important to get the personal summary right, provide experience, education and knowledge - it’s still important to align the resume to the job description.

Whether it’s someone skimming or computer software – you want the keywords of your resume, cover letter and personal summary to align with those specified in the job description.

Depending on the industry in which you are aiming to get hired, your resume could be the key to your success. Whether it be a position in the public sector, a technology job or in education – your resume is going to be key to getting your foot in the door.

Government Work There are perks to getting a job in the public sector. A lot of it centers on benefits, security and good hours. But, you have to get the job first. Even if you have all the experience for the job, applying for a public-sector job is completely different than applying with a private company.

When applying for a public position, it’s important to remember that keywords matter less, given a robot isn’t going to be reading it. In fact, your resume should be as humanized as possible given it will be read by actual people, even a group on a hiring committee from multiple departments.

Some tips to remember in applying for a public job include: Keep it traditional: Stick to the look in resume and cover letter that stays professional and doesn’t get too fancy. Use conservative font to

outline your experience, education and achievements.

Follow the steps: Procedures have to be followed in public-sector positions. Deviating from steps outlines in the job description and post could mean you missing the finalist list of candidates for interviews.

Be specific and thorough: While traditionally its been said to keep your resume short and to only one page. However, for a public position, it’s important to provide details.

Share as much pertinent information as possible to state your case for the position.

Be personable: As stated above, there is not a robot or quick resume skimmer that decides the best possible candidates to interview. Instead, it is a real person who understands what it takes to work a government job where you likely will deal with the public. They are looking for a true person and not just keywords.

Use clear and concise statements.

Technology Jobs Unlike a government job, unless you are applying for a job in the public sector, getting a tech job requires clear, concise information on your experience, certifications and education.

Personal summary: The first step in creating a resume for a tech job is to knock the personal summary out of the park. With the right wording, expressions and information the personal summary can get you a step forward with the application. However, worded incorrectly, especially when it’s a tech department sifting through the material, you may lose consideration before they even start skimming further down the page.

In a summary paragraph, including the title of the job for which you are seeking, experience and a quick rundown of qualifications.

Skill set: It’s important to really list and be thorough in supplying your qualifications that proves you meet the skill set required for the job in which you are applying. While some outside the tech industry may think they are reading a foreign language, tech industry professionals understand and want to know.

Explain areas in which you are an expert, explain areas you are knowledgable and clearly list areas in which you have experience.

What to leave in, what to leave out: Remember to include the parts of your work history that are relevant to the position. Leave out the rest.

Also, include personal details fitting to the position. Include all information regarding your achievements in the field.

A position in Education Education is one of those fields where you can be hired in either the public or private sector. It’s an area where you have stability in hours worked, and it is also increasingly demanding as much as positions in the education field are in demand.

Getting a job in education requires specific skills as much as it requires experiences and credentials. Some of those skills include adaptability, dedication, creativity and the ability to be an effective communicator.

In creating a good resume and building a career in education, some tips to keep in mind include: Gaining experience: The more experience you have, the more willing institutions are to hire you.

Degrees and certifications: Any time you are teaching, or participating in educating any age group, it’s important to have the degrees required by the schools and institutions. However, it’s just as important to show in a resume that you’ve kept up and evolved. Times change, which requires more certifications, updated practices and proof that you stay with the times.

Appearance matters: We aren’t talking about the clothing you choose or how you sit and carry yourself during an interview – we are talking about the resume. Your resume must have a professional look, be well organized. Remember, even in education, a resume may only be skimmed for up to 30 seconds.

It’s time for teens to start applying for summer jobs It’s the time of year where the school year is wrapping up and teenagers may start thinking about what to do this summer. Instead of just sitting at home and scrolling the iPhone screen, one option is to take advantage of the many job opportunities available today.

This is the time of year where many public and private entities are looking for summer help to provide entertainment and programs to youth and families.

Take Pirates Cove for instance. The Englewood water park is currently seeking lifeguards for the summer with plans to open on May 25. Area teenagers have an opportunity to gain valuable experience, and make up to $12.30 an hour.

Brad Anderson, senior facilities supervisor of aquatics for the Town of Englewood, said getting a summer job as a life guard or with their summer services gives teenagers a great sense of team work.

“The team environment is probably the most important thing,” he said.

“Then, you get to make a difference

in people’s lives. As a lifeguard you save lives, you mentor and you gain a true sense of belonging.”

Anderson said the starting age for hiring lifeguards is 15 as long as they can pass certification requirements.

“We will hire you at any age as long as you come with a willingness to work,” Anderson added.

Other summer programs are also in search of summer help, it just takes some searching on metro government websites in communities such as Castle Rock, Parker,

Lakewood, Golden and others.

Besides something to do over the summer, getting and keeping a summer job has the following benefits for teens: Responsibility Success in the adult world is contingent on what teens learn as kids. Pot ER visits climb in Denver hospital study Numbers rise threefold since weed became retail product

Five years after Colorado first legalized marijuana, a new study shows that unwanted effects of cannabis and cannabis products are sending more people to the emergency room.

Inhaled marijuana caused the most severe problems at one large Denver area hospital. Marijuana-infused foods and candies, called edibles, also led to trouble. Patients came to the ER with symptoms such as repeated vomiting, racing hearts and psychotic episodes.

The study, published March 25 in Annals of Internal Medicine, stemmed from tales of tourists needing emergency care after gobbling too many marijuana gummies.

“It was hard to know if these were just anecdotes or if there was a true phenomenon,” said lead author Dr. Andrew Monte of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital.

Three deaths in Colorado tied to edible products also prompted the study.

Emergency room records from Monte’s hospital show a threefold increase in marijuana cases since the

state became the first to allow sales of recreational marijuana in January 2014. Nearly a third of patients were admitted to the hospital, evidence of severe symptoms, Monte said.

In 2012, the ER saw an average of one patient every other day with a marijuana-caused problem. By 2016, the count was two to three per day.

That’s not enough to swamp the emergency department, Monte said, but it stresses an already burdened system.

Most people can use marijuana safely, Monte said, but with its increased availability and higher THC concentrations, “we may be seeing more adverse drug reactions,” he said.

THC is the part of marijuana that gets people high.

A growing cannabis industry promotes the drug as a cure-all while downplaying dangers, said Dr. Erik Messamore, a psychiatrist at Northeast Ohio Medical University who wasn’t involved in the research. More than 30 states now allow marijuana for at least medical use. New Jersey is debating becoming the 11th state to approve recreational pot. The U.S. government considers marijuana illegal.

Governor signs law on electoral pact

Colorado has joined a compact of states that have pledged to pool their presidential electoral votes for the winner of the national popular vote.

On March 15, Democratic Gov. Jared Polis signed into law a bill under which Colorado joins 11 other states and the District of Columbia in what’s called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

The pact would take effect after states with a collective 270 electoral votes — the number needed to win the presidency — agree to join. With Colorado’s nine electoral votes, compact members have 181.

Currently, the state’s electoral votes are cast for whoever wins the popular vote in Colorado.

Similar legislation is pending in New Mexico, with five electors, and Delaware, with three.

Opponents say the initiative subverts an Electoral College that ensures that smaller states aren’t trampled when it comes to choosing a president.

Two Colorado Republicans, Monument Mayor Don Wilson and Mesa County Commissioner Rose Pugliese, have pledged to seek a 2020 state ballot measure that would undo the law.

The National Popular Vote campaign was launched after Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the 2000 election to Republican George W. Bush when electoral votes were tallied.

Colorado Democrats won control of the state Legislature in November, and quickly introduced their bill this year after Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton, who won 3 million more votes nationally than Trump.

Currently, voters choose presidential electors from the political parties.

The Electoral College has 538 electors, corresponding to the number of seats held by states in the U.S. Senate and House, plus three votes for the District of Columbia. Electors from states that have joined the compact would pool their votes for the national popular vote winner — whether or not that candidate won in those states.

Colorado Republicans argued the compact would compel candidates to bypass smaller, rural, often Republican-leaning states during their campaigns. Democrats argued it would force presidential candidates to fight for votes in more states, including solidly red states like Texas and solidly blue states like California.

Internet shows that you can’t spell ‘antisocial’ without ‘social’

E

very day, every single day, maybe on the hour, someone is shamed, chided, ridiculed, put down and disrespected because of an image of them or a comment they made that was posted on social media.

And then the bad blood begins.

There’s a very old joke about the man who goes to his doctor and says, “Doc, every time I hit my hand with a hammer, well, it hurts.”

Doctor says, “Want my advice?

Stop hitting your hand with a hammer.”

I know this is too simple and simplistic for people who are smitten and taken and enamored with social media, but all anyone has to do, to avoid being shamed, chided, and ridiculed, is to quit social media.

Otherwise, your complaints fall on (my) deaf ears.

For many, such as we have become, being on social media is a requisite. It’s not even a choice.

Not being on social media is about as uncool as it gets.

And we all want to be cool, with it, and awesome, don’t we?

I promise you: Someone will breast-feed in public tomorrow, and post an image of it, and then be slammed from here to Dairyland.

(We) can’t seem to resist sharing our special QUIET moments with the DESPERATION world, but try, try, try.

I know I am an exception. Not on social media, and don’t have a cellphone. No selfies here. Don’t know what Instagram is or why anyone needs it or wants it.

But it’s never cruel.

And people are cruel.

There are special interests and prejudices and resentments by the boxcar.

If that’s true, or even partly true, why post something that is going to trigger someone?

There’s an old adage that graffiti is progressive. If someone sees graffiti, there is a biochemical need in us to add something to it.

Likewise, replies to posts.

Then, there are replies to the replies, some in point-counterpoint, like Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin.

When I open Yahoo, it defaults to garbage. I’d like it to default to news, but can’t figure out how to arrange that.

Every day, there is an article about the most useless family in America: what they wore an hour ago, who is cheating on them, and how terrific they looked in thongs at the hard-

ware store.

I wish they would go away. But I know someone would take their places. (We) feast on garbage; i.e., personality doings.

But it has worked its way down — way down — into the lives of just about anyone on social media.

Why aren’t (we) smart enough to figure it out? Perhaps the word is “hope.” We hope people are mindful and respectful of others, but as I am writing this, they’re cleaning up a mosque in New Zealand, and it was reported that the shooter exploited the power of the internet.

Maybe you’ve read about the parents who bribed their kids into colleges and universities? One of the kids is, or was, an influencer.

Her brain is a 21st-century mush of “I, me, mine.”

Nothing good happens after midnight. On social media.

When our sail is attached to someone else’s boat

oo often we seem to attach our sail to someone else’s boat, don’t we? Or, we hitch our wagon to someone else’s horse and let others control or dictate our direction in life. Their goals don’t just become our goals, their goals become the tasks and the to-do’s we live out each day as we watch our own dreams fade into the distance.

As an on-again/off-again entrepreneur trapped inside a corporate executive’s body, I totally get this concept.

There are times when I have built my own boat and set my own sails and have met with tremendous success.

And there have been other endeavors where, let’s just say my boat took on too much water, ending my venture with my sails tattered and torn. But, in both victory and defeat, the sails were mine, the boat was mine, and the dreams and goals were mine.

The concept is not just for entrepreneurs — the idea of having our own goals and dreams is for everyone. When we are happily employed and engaged in meaningful work that satisfies our own desires that is

a beautiful thing too. When we feel fulfilled and when we feel like we are contributing to the greater good, this is a wonderful outcome. Our sails are absolutely attached to the right boat or our horses are hitched to the right wagon. Life is good.

The trick is knowing and understandWINNING ing when we are WORDS doing things that are as meaningful and purpose-driven for ourselves as they are for our employer or any organization we serve. But here’s the deal, even if we are blessed enough to work for an outstanding boss or company who sets good goals and objectives, communicates expectations and results consistently, and we are happily employed and engaged in what we do, if we do not challenge ourselves to think bigger and set our own productivity goals higher than what the company sets for us, it means we have still just attached our sail to their boat.

Whatever it is we choose to do in this world, we should be the one who sets our own course and we are the ones who should hold ourselves accountable to the results we want to deliver. And we should never do this just for the company or someone else, but we need to do this because it gives us freedom and empowerment as we attach our own sail to our own boat.

“Something occurred after his accident where it was like a muse came to visit him,” said Stephanie Hill Newton, a friend and fellow artist. “When a muse comes to see us, we have a choice to grab on and follow that muse where it wants to take us, or choose to let it pass us by. He chose to grab his muse and hasn’t let that muse go.”

A change of pace Almost every piece hanging in the Deep Space Lounge marks a point in Holmes’ newfound appreciation of life. He takes things more slowly. He tries to live in the moment.

Karla Raines has been Holmes’ friend since 2002. She began painting in 2012 and said Holmes’ work as an artist has been nearly the opposite of who he has been his entire life — a man interested in fast-paced, high-energy action.

“James’ work has a serenity to it, and there’s almost an additional, emotional, visual component to it that is a direct connection to who he is spiritually and how he’s connected to his emotions,” Raines said. “I think what I’ve seen with James is immense continuity in terms of character of the person and his deep passion for the things that capture him.”

A couple nights per week, Holmes returns to his basement art studio, turns on some Pearl Jam or Jack White, and paints. He starts with a base of white paint, then begins to integrate different colors — orange, blue and yellow show up frequently in his work. He doesn’t spend much time thinking about the piece, and doesn’t look at the piece too closely until the next morning, when he begins to see the figures in his art and the emotion the piece evokes.

Friends would comment on what they saw and how each painting made them feel, and Holmes began to see it, too.

Holmes’ work will be on display at the Deep Space Lounge until April 27. He’s already had people interested in buying his pieces, and he provides smaller ones for $25 as souvenirs. His work can also be seen at jamesholmesstudio.com.

Most of Holmes’ head fogginess has faded, he said. His ability to play guitar has slowly come back to him, but his art remains one of his greatest new passions.

“When I had this accident, part of my being able to accept the harsh moments about the prospects of the surgery, what it might look like… part of my ability to process that was my faith,” Holmes said. “I knew that there’s a purpose for my life. I believe everything that happens to me is for learning. There’s a lesson in all of it, and my belief in God allowed me to accept it.” ing beside all of you through the years. here’s a common theme on listings for Easter egg hunts in the Denver Metro area.

Don’t be late. The events begin precisely on time — and they’re over in a flash.

Cynthia Bauman knows exactly why.

When the Golden Kiwanis Club holds its annual Easter egg hunt at Parfet Park, it’s a sight to behold, she said.

Volunteers disperse roughly 6,000 colored eggs “scattered like gum drops all over the park.” They divide kids into three age groups, and at 10 a.m. sharp, volunteers ring the bell.

Then chaos, albeit adorable chaos, unfolds.

“At 10:03 it’s over. The eggs are like vacuumed off the lawn. It’s amazing,” Bauman said.

From lightning-speed Easter egg hunts to church services to Sunday brunch, there are plenty of ways for Denver metro families to celebrate Palm Sunday and Easter this year. Local event organizers say they look to bring people together in a variety of ways on the holiday.

In Sedalia, Christ’s Episcopal Church from Castle Rock joins with St. Philip in the Field Episcopal Church to guide churchgoers through the “stations of the cross.”

It’s a 14-step process that walks people through the end of Christ’s life.

That follows a week of activities beginning on Palm Sunday, aiming to prepare people to reflect on the biblical story of Easter, said the Rev. Brian Winter of Christ’s Episcopal Church.

Also in Castle Rock is the annual “Special Egg Hunt” hosted by Front Range Church at Douglas County High School. Organizer Jenifer Prosser says the public event caters to children young and old but also to families with special needs. They hold it on April 13, starting at 11 a.m., so families aren’t overwhelmed with too many events on Easter weekend.

They have traditional egg hunts

but also ones designed for mobilityimpaired children, egg hunts that use beepers for visually impaired children, and a sensory-friendly hunt.

They expect about 2,000 people this year. Prosser said they get emails after each event from families whose child was able to attend an egg hunt for the first time because of the inclusive activities.

“We just want to bridge that gap and meet families where they are,” Prosser said.

There are also those who show up on Easter Sunday and show up hungry.

For those families, Donna Charbonnier of Ciancio’s Restaurant in Westminster is ready to take care of them.

The eatery located at the Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills is a family operation run by Charbonnier and her brother. For nearly 10 years they have offered a reservation-only Easter brunch that transforms their restaurant.

Staff break down walls, open up the space, decorate for Easter and put up a large screen to play the film “Easter Parade.” This year’s event runs from 10 a.m. to noon on April 21 and is capped at 150 guests. The menu boasts eggs Benedict, homemade green chili, scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, meatballs, biscuits and gravy and more.

Charbonnier said the brunch is a tradition for many families, and one in high demand.

“We had them calling in February,” she said. “There’s a lot of big families that will come back year after year.”

Bauman said they are looking forward to this year’s egg hunt, which takes place on April 20, and are welcoming volunteers. Those who want to help set up can arrive at 8:30 that morning before watching little egg hunters descend on the park.

“Kids are just scooping them into their baskets. They’re so joyful,” she said. “It’s so cute.”

he annual exhibition of Arapahoe Community College fine-arts students is open at the Colorado Gallery of the Arts through April 16, featuring student art from the ceramic, 3D design, drawing, jewelry and metals, painting and photography departments. How do you try ensure your clothes cannot be bought off the rack at Nordstrom’s and other elite chains?

When we go to show we make sure the vendor does not sell to places like Nordstrom’s. We attempt to be unique and provide options that you will not find in any department store. Most of our vendors sell mainly to boutiques. The clothes we buy are often one-of-a-kind and we are unable to reorder because our vendors only make so many of each item. We only buy so much and when it is gone, it is gone.

What type of clothing do you purchase?

We buy unique, quality clothing and above all washable clothes. We very seldom carry anything that needs to be cleaned. We also buy all sizes, not limiting our clothing to any particular size range. We try to provide a wide variety of styles.

Our clothes make everybody look good.

What sets you apart from other boutiques?

Personal service is the key to selling clothing and we know and take care of our customers. I will call interested parties the moment new inventory arrives. We look to stock clothing that can be reasonably priced and we carry

all sizes, not like some boutiques with only small sizes.

What other items do you sell besides clothing?

We have purses, candles, jewelry, scarves, cards, scrubs, lotion and perfume from Ireland and some unique home décor items like origami napkins and Kim’s original barbecue sauce.

Where does the name “Skadoodles” come from?

Kim was making her homemade Snickerdoodle cookies when trying to think of a name for the store. She stopped suddenly and said, “Skadoodles, that’s the name.”
