Blizzard pounds Elbert County STAFF REPORT

The blizzard that slammed Colorado on March 13 hit Elbert County particularly hard, bringing powerful winds, heavy snow and leaving hundreds of motorists stranded.

The morning after the bomb cyclone, rescue personnel continued their efforts to reach stranded motorists across the county, and major roads remained closed. About 400 people had taken refuge in shelters, according to county officials. The

county had set up two emergency shelters: one at the county fairgrounds at 95 Ute Ave. in Kiowa and the other at Frontier High School, 589 S. Banner St., Elizabeth.
