Do you know how to run an official meeting according to Robert’s Rules of Order? Can you use a rat trap to power a car? Have you ever designed a miniature golf course?

Students from Elizabeth High School’s Technology Student Association did all three while competing at the Colorado Technology Student Association Conference in February at the Denver Tech Center. Ten students from the EHS club battled it out with more than 1,800 middle and high school students from across the state at the conference, and placed in the top tiers of each category.

Nora Carriker took third place in the Fore! Competition, which pairs a high school student with an elementary school student, and they work together to create a miniature-golf hole based on the vision of the younger student.

Carriker’s young partner wanted an “under the sea” theme, so they created a scene with a little mermaid, some seashells and sand made of crushed Cheerios.

Elbert County responds to coronavirus concerns Officials provide update on plans, offer advice regarding potential spread

With the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 around the world dominating the news daily, Elbert County officials want to let residents know they are taking preventive measures, and they encourage residents to do the same.

Eileen Krauth, deputy county manager, and Dwayne Smith, Elbert County public health administrator, answered questions from the Elbert County News about common concerns.

What actions, if any, will the county be taking?

As of now (March 4), we don’t plan to take any specific actions other than continuing to monitor the situation closely. ... The county will rely on information from and recommendations of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and CDPHE (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment)

as the situation develops. As an employer, the county has encouraged employees who are sick with flu-like symptoms to stay home from work until they are feeling better.

Will public spaces remain open?

The county has no plans to close any county buildings or facilities at this point.

Will public facilities be affected?

No. The county has no plans to limit access to any public facilities at this time.

Does the county have an official plan for any kind of outbreak?

The county’s Office of Emergency Management is always prepared with plans to respond to many different kinds of emergencies, including a possible pandemic, and is keeping a close eye on the developments.

Has the county ever invoked the plan or closed facilities?

The county has closed its offices for snow emergencies before, but not, at least in recent memory, for a pandemic situation. Of course many of the county’s employees are “essential personnel” who continue to provide services even if the

county’s offices are closed, such as law enforcement personnel, and in the event of a snowstorm, snowplow drivers.

“It can cause serious illness, and about one in every five people who catches it needs hospital care,” said Smith. “It is therefore quite normal for people to worry about how the COVID-19 outbreak will affect them and their loved ones.”

Smith also recommends talking to your kids about their concerns over coronavirus.

“Whether kids are hearing about

COVID-19 from friends, on TV or through social media, they are bound to have questions. Some, especially children already prone to anxiety, may have serious worries,” said Smith. “Experts suggest asking your kids what they are hearing.

Answer their questions calmly and keep the door open for more questions as they arise. Manage your own anxiety, since kids take their cues from you. Keep family routines on track.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued the following recommendations to help the public avoid COVID-19.

Primary changes political landscape Voter participation went up sharply compared with previous caucus turnouts

Four years ago, after the Colorado caucus system meant that millions of voters could not take part in presidential primaries, a coalition of political centrists put forward a new idea: Let the more than 1 million unaffiliated voters help pick the party nominees for the White House and make it a primary to boost turnout within the Democratic and Republican ranks.

The two major political parties objected. The state’s top lawmakers even rewrote the official voter guide to make it less appealing and deleted a line saying it would increase voter turnout. It didn’t matter.

Proposition 107 won voter approval by a wide margin in 2016.

On March 3, Colorado held a presidential primary for the first time in two decades, and the inaugural one with mail ballots and unaffiliated voters. In the end, it increased voter turnout — a lot.

The preliminary election results show that nearly 1.8 million people — a 46% turnout — voted in Colorado.

It represents a nearly 15-fold increase from 2016, when an estimated 122,000 Democrats attended caucuses and Republicans canceled their presidential vote.

The supporters behind the “Let Colorado Vote” initiative celebrated last week as a late surge in ballots boosted turnout to historic levels.

“I’m just very excited to see that we created a mandatory vehicle that allows all voters in Colorado to have more of a voice, I just think that’s a great thing in Colorado,” former DaVita CEO Kent Thiry, the measure’s leading supporter, said in an interview after polls closed.

But the primary also exposed an inconvenient reality: The full promise of Proposition 107 remains unfulfilled.

The advocates for the 2016 ballot initiative made the case to voters that the party caucuses favored party loyalists and only amplified candidates at the edges of either party. And a semi-open primary that allowed the state’s unaffiliated voters to participate would

Withdrawals created issue The main argument for the new system — that it would enfranchise all voters — didn’t fully materialize either. An estimated 150,000 or more votes were not even counted because two top Democratic contenders withdrew their candidacy weeks after voting started. And now lawmakers and the governor are discussing changes to assure voters aren’t disenfranchised.

Some unaffiliated voters didn’t participate because which party primary they voted in would have been public information.

Moreover, the method Republicans and Democrats created to award the state’s national delegates from the primary vote reveals that the process for picking a nominee is still firmly an internal party affair. (In fact, the party’s leadership can vote to cancel the primary if they wish.)

The Republican Party set a bar of 20% support for any candidate to qualify for delegates, a significant margin that none of the littleknown rivals to President Donald Trump met. And the Democratic Party awarded only one-third of their delegates to the statewide popular vote — reserving the majority for apportionment based on

a formula that favors Democratic strongholds.

Mike Chiropolos, a 56-year-old registered Democratic voter from Boulder, questioned how the party allocated delegates. “We should honor one-person, one-vote for presidential primaries,” he said in an interview. “Transparency and a logical system is good for democracy. Everybody wants their vote to matter, and nobody likes to think their vote counts less.”

In addition, the Democratic delegates selected by party activists are able to switch allegiances and cast votes that differ from the choices of Colorado voters at the national convention.

The ballot measure and the implementation law gave the party this freedom, acknowledging that they are private organizations and free to operate under their own rules as part of a compromise with critics.

The supporters are the first to acknowledge that their vision for a more voter-centric process remains a work in progress.

“These things do take time to fully emerge,” Thiry told The Sun. “But I think it’s already making a difference, and that difference will continue to grow.”

The strong showing by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a former registered independent, suggested a step toward moderation in the minds of supporters. Sanders finished first with 36% and centrist Joe Biden, the former vice president, took 24%. Bloomberg finished third at 21%.

“That’s just one election,” Thiry said. “And the portion of the electorate that is supporting Bernie Sanders is in part a function of the uniqueness of the current situation in our country and the campaign so far.

Medication fog can worsen or mimic dementia in elderly Patients face risk as they take more drugs from multiple doctors

Claire Dinneen’s daughters thought that worsening dementia was causing her growing confusion, but her doctor suspected something else.

Dr. Pei Chen asked them to round up medicines in the 89-year-old woman’s home and they returned with a huge haul. There were 28 drugs ordered by various doctors for various ailments, plus over-the-counter medicines. Chen spent a year sorting out which ones were truly needed and trimmed a dozen.

To her daughters’ surprise, Dinneen got better, able to remember more things and to offer advice on what to wear and how to raise their kids. Her symptoms were from “medication fog,” not her dementia getting worse, Chen told one daughter.

“I was just stunned,” Debbie Dinneen said. “No one had taken a look at the big picture” to see if medicines might be addling her mom, who lives near Berkeley, California.

“Unfortunately, it’s not unusual,” said Chen, a geriatrician at the University of California, San Francisco.

About 91% of people over 65 take at least one prescription medicine and 41% use five or more — what doctors call polypharmacy.

The risk of side effects or interactions rises with the number of pills, and one doctor often is unaware of what others have already prescribed for the same patient. Dinneen, for example, had two prescriptions for the same drug at different doses from different pharmacies.

“It’s very easy to miss medication side effects because they masquerade as all these other symptoms,” said Dr. Michael Steinman, another UCSF geriatrician.

He recently helped update an American Geriatrics Society list of potentially inappropriate medicines for older adults that can mimic dementia or make symptoms worse.

“Potentially” is the key word — the drugs on the list don’t always pose a problem, and no one should stop using any medicine without first checking with a doctor because that could do serious harm, Steinman stressed.

Doctors ‘de-prescribe’ medicines But some medicines don’t have a strong reason to be used and their risks may outweigh their benefits for older people, he and other doctors say.

be causing problems.

The list includes certain types of muscle relaxants, antihistamines, allergy medicines, stomach acid remedies, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, pain relievers, sleep aids and other common treatments.

Many of these drugs have anticholinergic effects — that is, they reduce or interfere with a chemical messenger that’s key to healthy nerve function. That can cause drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, dizziness and other symptoms that impair thinking skills.

These drugs might be fine for a younger person, but “once someone is having even the tiniest difficulty with thinking and memory, then the effects of these drugs are just huge,” said Dr. Andrew Budson of Boston University’s Alzheimer’s disease center.

Sometimes side effects appear right away, but in other cases they only develop or show up with longer use.

Patients may not make the connection between a drug they’ve used for many months and new symptoms.

Age itself can be a culprit and make a long-used drug suddenly intolerable.

“The drug hasn’t changed, the person has,” said Dr. Greg Jicha, a dementia specialist at the University of Kentucky.

Family members will say: “`Well, she was on that for 20 years,’ but her brain, kidney, liver were younger too.

She’s no longer going to be able to

metabolize that drug” like she used to, he said.

Jicha recalled a case last year when he was asked to give a second opinion on a woman recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He reviewed her medicines and “six jumped right out — these are not good medications for someone over 65” let alone at the higher doses she was receiving, he said. Four turned out to be for problems she no longer had, and he was able to switch some others to safer alternatives.

The woman’s score on a 38-point test of thinking skills rose from 18 before the medication changes to 33 after them, putting her at the low end of the normal range.

Now she can drive, which was “an absolute no-no six months earlier,” Jicha said. “She clearly no longer meets criteria for dementia.”

Research looks at older patients One of Jicha’s colleagues, Dr. Daniela Moga, heads a study to see whether optimizing medicines can delay the start of dementia symptoms. At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles in July, she described the federally funded research, which involves people who are 65 or older and taking at least one medicine on the geriatrics society list.

“Anything the elementary student has envisioned is what the high school student is responsible for making into a reality,” said Jon Taylor, a teacher at EHS and TSA club advisor. “They really got creative, and worked hard leading up to the competition.”

Carriker didn’t use a putter, but instead designed a mechanical wheel and spun the marble through it, shooting it out the back side, down a ramp, through some obstacles and into the hole.

Bryson Kolz placed within the top 10 contestants for his Rat Trap Drag Race entry, where he used his problem-solving and engineering

knowledge to harness the energy from the force of the spring bar to propel a small car down the track.

Kolz designed the car himself, including building the frame, axles and wheels.

“This event isn’t only judged on the performance of the race,” said Taylor. “He also had to provide judges with blueprints, a written concept and then present to the judges a verbal explanation of his concept. Placing in the top 10 out of all the students from Colorado is a pretty big accomplishment.”

The Chapter Team advanced to the semifinals for their presentation of Robert’s Rules of Order.

Team members Courtney Tauger, Gabe Zepeda, Jason Hennager, Logan McMullen, Dominic Richey and Nora Carriker first had to qualify by passing an electronic test before advancing in the competition.

“In preparation I had my students watch some of the impeach-

ment trial, because they’re using the same rules of order for that process,” said Taylor.

During the semifinals the team ran a mock meeting in front of the judges, but didn’t place in the top three.

Elizabeth High School was one of the original three schools in Colorado to start a TSA chapter in 1987, and the chapter has competed at the COTSA event every year since. Taylor has been leading the group for the past 22 years.

“This competition is really good for students, especially if they want to go into the technology world,” said Taylor. “They get the opportunity to engage with other students and collaborate. So many students are on their phones all the time and that’s how they interact. Here they are face to face, and on a personal level rather than an electronic level.”

Art becomes something people can really get into

f you own what is commonly called a “painting,” you might want to hang on to it. Someday it might be worth a lot of money as a curiosity.

Paintings, typically but not always, are considered art, and they are achieved with QUIET oil paint, acrylic paint or waterDESPERATION color on a variety of rectangular and square substrates that include canvas, paper and even cave walls.

Paintings can depict a number of things: the human figure, landscapes, Craig Marshall animals or, in the case of abstract Smith expression, nothing at all.

Artists have painted works of art for centuries.

paintings that are thought to be 17,000 years old.

Artists such as Durer, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Monet, Picasso and Pollock have inspired art students and audiences, and their sublime efforts have filled art museums around the world, including our own Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum and the Museum of Outdoor Arts.

While some artists, particularly the once-a-week variety that is fascinated by fruit and landscapes, will continue to paint on squares and rectangles, their numbers will dwindle to next to nothing.

This will have a major impact on future art exhibitions, on art schools, on art museums and on vendors — especially those who currently manufacture pre-made canvases.

One day, finding a canvas to paint on will be as difficult as finding a typewriter ribbon is now.

None of this means the end of art. There’s simply a new kid on the block.

It’s called “immersion art.” Im-

mersion art is similar to entering a fun house at a cheap carnival where things seem to fall off the walls, endanger viewers and provide almost hallucinogenic images.

It’s happening and, most importantly, it’s cool.

Conventional art museum attendance — except for blockbuster exhibitions featuring the work of art history’s Hall of Fame — is in decline, and if the museums don’t convert to immersion spaces, they will be deceased in the water.

New museums, specifically designed for immersion-type products, are sprouting all over the country and all over the world. Likewise: galleries and other venues where art is exhibited.

Think of yourself as Alice Liddell and you’ve just fallen down a rabbit hole. Or going on a date with Salvador Dali.

As many of you know, I am a trained painter. I am retrofitting my entire inventory of paintings with mechanisms that will enable them to spin, move up and down and

sideways, and emit sounds such as the roar of a lion and the bray of a donkey.

The art world is a step behind the music industry, where visual contrivances, such as pyrotechnics, countless back-up dancers, and innumerable costume changes replaced valid content years ago.

If your son or daughter is thinking about art school, make sure you don’t encourage them to major in painting, unless the school reassures you the painting classes will discourage static wall art, and encourage paintings you can touch, hear, smell and even taste.

And another thing: Get used to the word “holistic,” whether you want to or not.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for old-fashioned oil paintings to become a thing of the past.

In other words: Don’t just look at a work of art. Become a part of it.

‘Once upon a time’ is right now, in our hands

e are all familiar with the start of a story that begins with, “Once upon a time.” What if that time is right now? What if years from now someone tells our story based on what they know about us, what they have observed in us, and what they have experienced through us?

WINNING They may just begin WORDS with, “Once upon a time,” and then fill in the rest of our story based on what they remember about us.

Here’s the thing, those stories that are told in the future will be based on what we are doMichael Norton ing right now, today, and in all the tomorrows of our lives. The good news is that we get to control that narrative, don’t we?

And we control that narrative based on our behaviors, our contributions, the words we use, how we respond

to situations, our experiences, and by living out our story in such a way that whoever we meet remembers us as someone who made their day, their job, and their life a little brighter.

When we think about our “Once upon a time” story that people will share, we should not worry about our past mistakes or failures because they are behind us now. We need to own and always learn from those mistakes and failures, but we should also remember that we have the opportunity to create our new story. The story that we really want to live and that we choose to live, and the one that we can start to begin authoring right now.

And maybe it is not a new story at all. Maybe we love the story we have lived and that we are living right now. And from this moment forward we can continue to write the rest of our story, we can build upon our journey by living more “Once upon a time” moments that helped shape how others will remember us and how we may have made a difference

them about hope, and they taught them how to grow from being a wandering generality to becoming a meaningful specific. In that moment the young man understood that he mattered, his story mattered, and that he wanted his “Once upon a time” story to change. That young man was me.

“But I’m very comfortable that the combination of open primaries and gerrymandering reform will make a profound difference in the political representation of the political middle,” he said.

Turnout grew sharply The surge in turnout is significant, proponents reiterated. The total included an estimated 590,000 unaffiliated voters, according to Constellation, a Republican data firm, and about 70% voted in the Democratic primary.

Jenny Martin, a 36-year-old who voted in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood, said it was her first time participating in a primary. She backed Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“I’m registered independent, so this is my first,” she said as she jogged her ballot to her neighborhood’s drop-off box. “I’m excited to get to join in.”

For the voters whose ballots didn’t count because their preferred candidates withdrew from the race, lawmakers are considering reforms to the current system, but others think voters will adapt.

Elbert County students in kindergarten through 12th grade can enter a contest through the Pines and Pines Libraries in which they can create the next child-themed library card. The My Library Card Design Contest is open to all students in Elbert County.

To enter, download a template and entry form from pplibraries.org, or pick one up at any local library. Entries must be turned in to any branch by the close of business May 1. One design will be chosen to use as one of the library cards offered. The winning design will be announced by May 7.

Each quarter, the library district gives a table to a patron who uses the Overdrive or CloudLibrary services and leaves a review on the library’s

website. Additional entries are given to patrons for each friend they refer who then reads or listens on Overdrive or CloudLibrary and leaves a review.

Split in church is inevitable based on debate about LGBTQ marriages and ordinations

When the Jardine family joined St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch in 2018, they were grateful to have a place where their oldest son would be accepted.

Not long before, the then 14-year-old had come out as gay, and the Parker family had immediately left their previous faith because they felt there wasn’t a place for them in the conservative congregation.

After a few Sundays at St. Andrew, “my son said to me, ‘I’m so glad I still get to have religion in my life,’” Ryan Jardine said. “That for me was such a touching moment.”

The Jardine family is pleased with their experience at the Highlands Ranch place of worship. But that’s only because the church actively breaks the Methodist denomination’s rules by performing same-sex marriages and ordaining LGBTQ people.

“I feel comfortable attending St. Andrew because I feel like they have the autonomy and desire to be inclusive,” Jardine said. “St. Andrew has gone out of their way with him to make sure he feels accepted and loved.”

But the United Methodist Church has been deeply divided for decades over how to include the LGBTQ community in its faith. And, in May, the issue may finally split the church as members vote on the Protocol, a proposal that would divide the church into two denominations — one for those who formally endorse same-sex marriage and the ordination of gay and lesbian clergy, and another for those who do not.

Two churches acting as one The United Methodist Church, or UMC, works a lot like modern democracies, with a system of delegates, conferences and legislation. When members want to make a change within the denomination, they must follow strict procedures.

The church first addressed homosexuality in the 1970s, when the UMC adopted a stance against condoning same-sex marriage. Since then, there have been multiple additions to that ruling, such as completely outlawing same-sex marriages and ordinations of clergy who identify as LGBTQ. Several attempts by delegates from progressive churches to remove language stating homosexuality is incompatible with Christianity have failed.

In 2019, delegates voted to approve the Traditionalist Plan, strengthening penalties for those who violate these policies.

Although LGBTQ marriages and ordinations are prohibited, churches throughout the country and the Denver metro area break these rules every

ELLIOTT WENZLER year. Under current policy, church members can file a complaint against respective leaders, which can lead to the clergyperson losing his or her ordination.

But in the UMC’s Mountain Sky Conference, which includes Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana, the current bishop, Karen Oliveto, is the first openly lesbian person to hold her office. She recently said she won’t process complaints related to LGBTQ involvement in church rites.

“If people have proven they have the gift for ministry,” she said, “to simply be LGBTQ is no reason to receive a complaint.”

Oliveto’s stance — she believes the Traditionalist Plan has created “a church of punishment” — reflects a simmering fracture within the church that has unfolded over five decades.

Rev. Bob Kaylor, lead pastor at Tri-Lakes UMC in Monument, which follows the more traditional belief, believes “we have long been at least two churches trying to act like one church.”

Traditionalist views, he said, are often misunderstood.

“The biggest misconception is that if you insist that Christian marriage is reserved for one man and one woman that somehow you hate your LGBTQ neighbors,” he wrote in an email to Colorado Community Media.

“We aren’t trying to deny any human rights to anyone. We simply believe that the rites of the church must be consistent with Scripture and the longstanding teaching of the church.”

The Protocol, conceived by delegates from churches across the world — including bishops and reverends — calls for worship practices to remain the same in all churches. But it gives traditionalists $25 million to create a new Methodist denomination, which would allow and enforce only unions between a man and a woman and prohibit ordinations of anyone who identifies as LGBTQ. Remaining churches continue as United Methodist and will support the inclusivity of all people in

rites such as marriage and ordination.

While the Protocol isn’t the only proposal under consideration, it has the strongest momentum and was derived from the most viewpoints, according to UMC documents. Delegates worked on the plan in 2019 and announced it in January. In May, 862 delegates from across the world will convene in Minneapolis to vote on the Protocol.

If the legislation passes, the Mountain Sky Conference would vote by July 2021 whether to join the inclusive or traditional branch. Individual churches, regardless of their conference’s decision, also can vote to stand with either side, with all decisions to be made by Dec. 31, 2024.

According to Oliveto, most of the nearly 380 churches in her conference identify as inclusive of all people. In a petition signed last July, about a dozen leaders from churches throughout the conference stated they reject the traditionalists’ “strict requirements.”

“The Traditionalist Plan is against everything my region has come to understand about the body of Christ,” Oliveto said. “We’re grounded in an understanding of God’s generous grace.”

In the Denver metro area’s Methodist community, congregants and clergy say they are anxious and hopeful about the coming months and potential changes.

Some area churches have already lost members of their congregation over this issue. Others fear the split will lead to further departures.

Among religious leaders, “there is a strong push to keep as many people together as possible,” said Rev. Megan Armstrong, associate pastor at Arvada United Methodist Church.

Armstrong’s wife, Rev. Elizabeth Jackson, is also a UMC pastor. It’s important to the couple, who support an inclusive church, to try to keep congregations together, regardless of some members’ sexual orientation.

“These are the people who have sat next to you,” Armstrong said, “who have been there when your child was baptized, who have comforted you.”

An inevitable split Despite these shared experiences, church data shows conflicting viewpoints among its members.

A 2019 UMC survey of more than 500 congregants in the U.S. showed that 44% identified as conservative or traditional in their religious beliefs, 20% identified as progressive or liberal and the rest were a mix of moderate and unsure, according to a news release from the church.

In 2015, the church completed a similar poll asking about U.S. congregants’ beliefs on same-sex marriage.

It surveyed 400 people in each of three groups — pastors, leaders and members. Results showed 42% of members disagreed with the church’s ban on same-sex marriage. About 38% of pastors also disagreed.

On both sides of the debate, Methodists cite the Bible and the central mission of Christianity to support their beliefs.

Controversial program aims to reduce young children’s risk of drowning

ith drowning as a leading cause of death among young children, parents each year seek out the best swim safety classes for their children.

One program in the Denver metro area is so popular among residents that it rivals community recreation centers’ own swimming programs in participation, the rec centers say.

Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, has conducted more than 8 million self-rescue lessons nationwide since its founding in 1966 and boasts having saved 800 children, according to its website.

In the daily, 10-minute sessions, infants and toddlers are slowly taught to control their breath underwater, roll on their backs and then float if they find themselves unexpectedly in water. Those old enough to maneuver themselves are trained to find a pool’s wall.

ISR is not meant to replace other swim safety measure and the program encourages practices including constant supervision of children near

The program is not without controversy. The American Academy of Pediatrics has not endorsed ISR because it lacks research, and some worry its methods traumatize children.

Still, parents steadfast in their support of ISR and confident in its ability to save young lives flock to the self-rescue lessons at local recreation

centers, private pools and other facilities year-round.

“We are kind of the last measure against drowning,” ISR instructor Julia McDonald said. “If all of those other things fail, we are the thing that will save them if nobody else is around.”

Eastridge, Christy Groza pointed to the exact spot where her 4-year-old daughter Hyacinth slipped and fell in the water two years earlier.

Hyacinth received ISR training when she was younger but had not been to a class in roughly a year when the accident happened. Nonetheless, she did not panic. Instead, she immediately turned on her back and floated until a lifeguard scooped her up, Groza said.

“I was so thankful for ISR,” Groza said.

For 2-year-old Benjamin Simcik, ISR lessons are about giving him survival skills when swimming with his parents and two older siblings, his mother Laura Simcik said.

“When you’re in a pool with three kids it could be life or death so fast and it’s really scary,” she said. “He needs to know that if you’re in water you can go under really fast.”

Benjamin did some crying when he began lessons several weeks ago. By week two he could float in the water without being held. In his fifth week, Benjamin was turning on his back when let go by his instructor and kicking to the pool’s edge in seconds.

“It was a little hard to watch at first,” Simcik said of the daily lessons.

“I think the consistency helped me too because I knew what to expect.”

Both Dombrowski and McDonald, who is an independent contractor at the Brighton Recreation Center and teaches in Arvada, said demand is high for the program.

“Every child needs to know selfsurvive,” Dombrowski said. “Give each child that skill before they find themselves alone in the water.”

Facing controversy Some in the swim community scrutinize or oppose ISR. Rumors that ISR instructors toss children in pools shroud the program reputation. Some say ISR’s practice of having children swim fully clothed, to prepare for realworld emergencies, is traumatic.

Castle Rock swim instructor Russ Marsh, who owns Smilefish Swim School, said former ISR students have come to him afraid of the water, which he believes is because of the ISR training.

“I think it’s horrible, because I get kids that come to me that are 3 or 4 years old that are terrified,” he said.

“They’re scared to death of the water.

Not all of them, but too many.”

He’d prefer the youngest of swimmers undergo parent-taught classes, where parents are in the pool learning alongside infants and toddlers.

It provides an important layer of comfort for children, Marsh said, who began as a swim coach in 1972 and coached for 35 years, including several at the University of Colorado.

He switched to running swim lessons 15 years ago.

And ISR is not endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics because it lacks any studies conducted by peer-reviewed journals.

AAP spokeswoman Sarah Denny has served on the organization’s council for Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention for seven years. The general pediatrician was also lead author on the AAP’s policy statement

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin swim lessons at 12 months old, if parents and their pediatrician agree it’s a good fit for the individual child, said Sarah Denny, spokeswoman and lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention. Research shows that’s the age where swim lessons become effective and can lower the risk of drowning, according to the AAP. Parents are urged to stay vigilant and never leave a child alone at bath time, in wading pools or anytime a child may be near water. Stay within arm’s reach of infants and toddlers.

Still, many drowning deaths occur when children were not expected to be near the water, Denny said.

Pools should be protected by four-sided fencing with self-locking gates. Alarms on entrances to a pool are also encouraged, Denny said. All children should receive swim lessons, and parents too, according to the AAP’s policy statement.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and it remains within the top 10 leading causes of death for people through the age of 54, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are a variety of swim lessons available in the Denver metro area, at community recreation centers or private companies. Parents can get in the water and learn alongside their infants and toddlers in some classes. There are also small-group classes where parents watch poolside, or private, one-on-one lessons with an instructor. for drowning prevention.

“At this time, we do not endorse ISR because there’s no evidence to show that ISR is effective in preventing drowning,” Denny said. “There is absolutely no evidence around ISR.” Denny said she isn’t sure why studies are not available on the program, but it leaves AAP without the necessary information to take a stance on ISR. A spokesperson for ISR could not be reached for comment.

Parents of children in ISR told Colorado Community Media they either were not aware of the criticism toward ISR or were not swayed by it. Firsthand experience, they said, earned their faith in the program.

“Some parents can’t handle their kids crying and they mistake that for being scared,” Groza said. “Just because your kid cries doesn’t mean they’re scared. It could just mean that they’re a 2-year-old and they don’t want to do something.”

Participants are given a sort of cognitive stress test — they take exams for thinking skills while wearing a patch that oozes scopolamine, a motion sickness drug that has anticholinergic effects, and then four weeks later without the patch. If they do worse while on the patch, it means certain medicines might be harmful for them, Moga explained.

“We want to see if we can identify a specific group that might benefit most” by carefully managing medication use and possibly delay the start of dementia symptoms, she said.

To help avoid medication problems, doctors give these tips:  Make sure you know all the medications someone is taking, including prescription, over-the-counter and vitamins or dietary supplements. Don’t assume that some are safe just because they don’t require a prescription.  Keep a running list with the date each medicine is started and stopped and note any symptoms. The National Institute on Aging offers a worksheet for this.  Review the total medication list with a doctor, a geriatrics specialist or a pharmacist.  If you suspect a problem, bring it up and don’t wait for your doctor to ask. The American Geriatric Society’s Health in Aging Foundation has these tools and tips for finding alternatives to any medicines causing trouble.

Castle Rock repair shop serves gas, hybrid and electric vehicles Business aims to be fully powered by solar this year

When Matt Peterson was a kid, he loved helping his father fix the family car in the driveway. Every time one of his neighbors stepped outside and popped the hood, he was there to watch and learn.

But the days of people maintaining their own cars are largely gone, Peterson said. Vehicles even 20 to 25 years old are so computerized and technologically advanced, it’s difficult for owners to repair mechanical issues on their own. Enter hybrid and electric vehicles, a growing market in the state and nation, and the task grows far more difficult.

Today Peterson and his partner, Grant Mansur, are getting their auto repair shop off the ground with a goal of helping all customers — gas, hybrid and electric vehicle drivers.

Solar Automotive Repair opened on Feb. 3 in Castle Rock and services all three vehicle types. In its first two weeks, the shop fixed up 25 vehicles, service manager Chanc Berndt said, most of which were gas.

Fellow Castle Rock auto shop owner John Manka said most shops will work on hybrid vehicles, but he’s still watching consumer trends before gearing up to service electric vehicles.

He believes more shops like Solar will pop up in the future as consumers look to EVs more.

“Just like anything else, the marketplace will adapt,” he said. “If I start seeing more and more of these then we’ll up our education and buy the equipment.”

At present, Manka’s 1 Stope Tire & Auto shop isn’t set up to work on electric vehicles, which often require special scanners and disabling the battery to make fixes. They’ll handle work on gas-parts in hybrids.

“If there was an issue (with electric vehicles), I would recommend they go back to the dealer primarily because this is still relatively new technology,” he said. “But there are places like Solar, and I know there’s one up in Boulder.”

Solar Automotive Repair also aims to be entirely solar powered by this spring. Not only is it good for the environment, Mansur said, but it’s smart business and should save them on electricity bills.

“We can run a business and not create any additional pollution in the world, and also it will save us money,” Peterson said. “You can run a business and not increase your carbon footprint.”

“The Bible has only six passages that speak to anything related to the issue of homosexuality,” said Rev. Mark Feldmeir, lead pastor at St. Andrew UMC in Highlands Ranch.

“Scripturally speaking, there’s no concept for homosexuality but we’ve interpreted some of those passages through the lens of our own biases.”

He believes passages interpreted in the present day as being about homosexuality actually referred to other concepts and have been misconstrued because of faulty translations and a lack of historical context.

Kaylor, one of the area’s few traditionalist pastors, disagrees, saying Scripture clearly defines marriage as between a man and a woman. He also maintains the traditionalist view is inclusive.

“All of us are sinners in need of

God’s grace and restoration. That is, I think, a radically inclusive position — though a very different way of defining inclusivity than my progressive colleagues might express,” Kaylor said in his email. “... the most inclusive church is the one where all the people are finding together that new way of life in Christ, no matter what their particular pattern of sin and brokenness might have been. I need my LGBTQ friends, my addicted friends, my greedy friends, my gluttonous friends … to be part of the church and they need me — because we all need Christ.”

Some local churches, like Littleton United Methodist Church, fall somewhere in the middle of the debate. The church is open to all members of the LGBTQ community but also wants to be open to people who are somewhat more traditionalist, said Rev. Richard Evans, interim senior pastor.
