Elizabeth store welcomes devotees of vaping lifestyle Devices began decades ago, but have gained popularity in recent years

There’s an inviting smell of fruit and earth hanging in the air at Vapez, located on County Road 17 in Elizabeth. The shop has a leather couch with a television nestled into one corner, and there are two large dogs owned by manager Casey Alfrey — an Alaskan husky and a boxer — that wrestle one another when they’re not happily receiving affection from visitors.

Vapez is committed to the mindset and technology of vaping, which involves using a personal vaporizer (mod) to heat a specialized liquid into an aerosol.

“A lot of people do it to quit smoking,” said Alfrey, who is joined by his sister, Mattie Alfrey, in managing the store. “It’s gotten more popular in the past 10 years or so.”

Vapez is the sister store to the original Castle Rock location. The store has been in Elizabeth for 2 1/2 years.

Both are owned by Peggy Hegler of Castle Rock.

The devices have evolved over time — vaping as it is known today began in the 1960s — but the concept is the

same. The user inhales vapor, not smoke, which makes vaping different from using cigarettes or a bong, which burn tobacco or herbal matter to create smoke.

The shop provides an array of supplies for hobbyists and those who want to use vaping to help them quit smoking. There’s a wall filled with

small bottles of juice — the liquid required for vaping — batteries, tanks that hold the juice, wicks and cotton.

All of these elements are assembled to create one’s personal vaporizer.

Casey explained that the investment to start vaping with a goal to quit smoking would ultimately be cheaper than the actual cost of smoking, “but if someone makes it into a hobby, then it gets to be about as

expensive as smoking.”

Because of laws surrounding the vaping industry, sellers of the products are not permitted to issue statements regarding safety. The use of e-cigarettes is on the rise — particularly among high school students.

According to the CDC, “the long-term health effects of these products are not known.” This month, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a report stating that “e-cigarette use is strongly associated with the use of other tobacco products among youth and young adults.”

Devotees of vaping, however, are enthusiastic about what they see as a sharp contrast in the levels of safety between vaping and smoking regular cigarettes. “There are 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes,” said one customer, who requested not to be identified. “There are five in e-juice.” Typically, those ingredients consist of 95% propylene glycol and glycerin in addition to nicotine, water and flavoring.

“You can really make each and every piece your own. Not to mention all of the different flavors you can use to help satiate that craving,” Casey said.

“My clients range from new 18-yearolds to elderly people,” he said.

“Initially, we were self-regulated until the FDA decided to … oversee everything last August … They classified everything in the stores into tobacco products.” Consequently, the minimum age requirement to purchase anything vape-related is 18.

Pines & Plains Libraries make changes for 2017 Waiver of late fines during test period could lead to permanent elimination

The new year has ushered in several changes designed to attract and benefit residents who utilize the Pines & Plains Libraries of Elbert County.

“Our ultimate goal is to get everyone to use their library and, by doing so, provide a better quality of life to them,” said Pines & Plains Libraries Director Tim Miller.

A new initiative was implemented on Jan. 1 that “allows the libraries to waive all daily late fines for an evaluative period of seven months,” Miller said. After the seven-month trial period, “we may make fines disappear permanently.”

Pines & Plains chose to try the initiative in response to a user survey and a recommendation from the Colorado State Library, Miller said.

“Fines are a barrier to use, and recent studies have shown that they have little effect on the rate at which items are returned on time,” he explained.

The initiative does not include lost or damaged items or collections fees.

In addition to the change in its late-fee policy, Pines & Plains will offer three new versions of the library card.

“One features a scenic Elbert County rural landscape. The other two kinds of cards have pictures of Snoopy and Charlie Brown from `Peanuts,’” Miller said. “We will issue these cards to new members automatically, and we are temporarily waiving the $1 replacement fee for patrons who ask for a new card at library desks.”

Fresh programming is a part of the change sweeping through Pines & Plains. A new group called Writers of the Plains will has begun at the Simla branch. “All kinds of writers participate, from poets to bloggers to fiction scribes,” Miller said. “The folks in the group provide positive and productive critiques of one another’s works while also discussing the ins and outs of the traditional and self-publishing business.” The group meets Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m.

The writers’ group formed during a special event to launch a new service called Self-E, which provides a potential national platform for up-and-coming writers. “Basically, a writer submits their work for review by editors at Library Journal. Works found to be of remarkable merit are marketed and checked-out nationally through an e-book provider called BiblioBoard,” Miller explained. Authors reserve all rights to publish elsewhere.

Figueroa, the two branches have several new programs starting. “Ruben is focusing on basic robotics and programming,” Miller said. “In fact, all libraries have STEM-based programming, and we’re hoping to launch a robot competition between all four … branches sometime in 2017.”

“We believe we can enhance every Elbert County citizen’s life,” Miller said of the changes happening at Pines & Plains. “I wish people knew that our libraries are open and welcoming to people with all kinds of interests. Yes, we love to share books, but we have so much more. People come to our librar-

ies to check out movies, play video games, talk with friends, rest, study, and learn through programs.”

Miller listed more reasons to patronize the libraries. “We’ve teamed up with over 100 libraries across Colorado to provide over a million works — available to request and check out for our customers,” he said. “We also have thousands of e-books, e-magazines, and audiobooks instantly available for checkout from any mobile device with a data package or location with internet access. All our members have to do to access these resources on-the-fly is visit pplibraries.org.”

Smaller ski resorts tout authenticity to compete Consolidation by big companies drives independents to stand out

A budget ski resort in western Colorado came up with an eye-popping offer — a $700 lift ticket, the most expensive in the nation. Only this lift ticket comes with a sweet bonus: a pair of handcrafted skis made from Colorado wood.

Gimmicky? Sure. But Sunlight Mountain Resort says that in an era of increasing ski-industry consolidation, where a handful of companies control more and more winter sport terrain, scrappy independent resorts need all the help they can get to compete with amenity-laden megaresorts.

From baking fresh doughnuts for skiers to displaying local art to play up a sense of community, smaller, independent resorts say they have to rely on personality.

“It’s the difference between Bud-

weiser or a craft brew,” said Troy Hawks, Sunlight’s head of marketing and sales.

The ski industry used to be dominated by independent resorts, where downhill and cross-country skiers would drive to a local mountain, maybe get a fireside cup of hot chocolate in a lodge, then drive home. A ski area with an on-mountain hotel was a rarity; one with nighttime entertainment and white-tablecloth dining would be a true destination.

Starting in the 1980s, larger conglomerate companies started consolidating ski areas, investing heavily to make their mountains 12-month vacation destinations.

They made room for upstart snowboarders. Added spas and skiing lessons for kids. Built condominiums and larger hotels. Allowed guests to buy one pass good at several mountain resorts.

Consolidation expanded in spurts.

on’t you just love that “new car” smell? Or what about tasting a delicious brand-new meal for the first time? How about seeing and reading the newest book by your favorite author or hearing a brand-new song by one of your favorite musicians or groups? And we know there is nothing like the feel of new snow and fresh powder under our feet as we take to the mountains.

There is just something about the “new” factor, isn’t there?

Well, here we are in a brand-new year. We

can choose to get caught up in last year, or the year before that, and the year before that, or we can choose to say that this is a new year, a new year filled with hope and prosperity.

A new year filled with much love and many blessings. A new year where we can look forward to the opportunities and the challenges ahead.

Now some of you may be shaking your head and saying, “Wait a minute Norton, what about all of the changes, what about the new President, what about all of the bad stuff happening here and around the world?” And

my answer would still be the same, `It is a brand-new year.’

We can choose to get mired in the past, or focused on the negativity and problems, or we can open our eyes today and see a brand-new day, listen with our ears to the news sounds of tomorrow, and taste the sweetness of the air that rides on the wings of hope and encouragement. It almost has that “new car” smell, doesn’t it?

I am truly blessed, and the year is just beginning.

The expression “happy new year” was just one of a number that were considered.

There were more optimists than pessimists on the committee, and the optimists won out.

“Happy new year” edged “Arise in the new year, prisoner of starvation” by one or two votes. I’m sure that you are as glad as I am.

It wasn’t until the introduction of the Julian calendar (46 B.C.) that Jan. 1 became New Year’s Day. The Julian calendar was Julius Caesar’s idea.

You have to have an ego the size of Mesopotamia to propose a new calendar.

I don’t get too excited about each and every new year. Good things will happen, bad things will happen.

There will be profound moments of grace, and profound moments of exasperation.

In other words, the same auld same auld.

Of course, 2017 may stand out in some ways that have never been seen before, if you know what I mean.

Individually, we have great years, good years, Craig Marshall and not so Smith good years.

I can’t distinguish one year from the next, except for a few.

Some really stand out. Like 2008.

There were three immediate family deaths, I adopted Smitty, I made a big mistake, and I was given a major opportunity. One after the other after the other.

The year before and the year after are restless memories. But I won’t forget 2008.

I don’t make resolutions.

Maybe I make the same ones every year, subconsciously, like not buying a tiny Shriner motorcycle.

One of my favorite artists, Henry Moore, said, “I think in

“old” way of doing things, our older car or vehicle, those old comfortable sneakers or shoes, and the way things are or the way things used to be. This whole notion of something brand-new just doesn’t resonate with some of us.

As a matter of fact that “New Car” smell almost makes some of us nauseated. And that’s OK, that is a personal preference and just the way some of us are wired.

For me, I like “new,” I like change, I

love challenges, and I embrace hope.

Sure, we have a world full of challenges and tragedy. No one disputes that, it’s just that some of us will look at those troubled situations and say there is nothing that can be done or just become overwhelmed. And yet others will look at the brand-new year and decide to do something productive to contribute to the change they want to see happen. Some of us will take the opportunity to see each a challenge or barrier as nothing more than a speed bump or hurdle

that needs to be overcome.

It is a brand-new year and we can be, do, and have anything that we want.

The only person who can ever stop us is ourselves. We can try and deflect all problems onto someone else or something else, but at the end of the day it is ultimately up to each one of us to choose our path and hold ourselves accountable for doing what we need to do when we need to do it.

It is a brand-new year, can you smell it, taste it, hear it, see it, and feel it?

He was not flamboyant, he did not make ridiculous statements about his art, and he believed in hard work.

Before I know it, I will be writing this very same column again, next December, and saying something like, “I was just getting used to writing 2017 on my checks.”

The past year was a personal best, and I am hoping for more of the same.

Her work is now displayed at the Art of Life Gallery in Denver, and she has exhibited a painting at the Denver Art Museum. Elaine says her house is filled with her artwork. “It brings me so much happiness,” she said, still marveling at what she’s accomplished, all because she went to an art class to see if she could paint.

Turning a New Year’s health resolution into a way of living

athan Lemon always made resolutions to get healthy, but in 2009 he decided to take it seriously: He lost 100 pounds in six months and now owns F.I.T. Gyms in Lone Tree, Thornton, Littleton and Loveland.

“I had the time to go to the gym two times a day and stopped eating (unhealthy) food,” Lemon said.

“When I saw the results, it was easy to keep going. That was exciting.”

The key is consistency, he said.

“Until you really commit yourself to it, a resolution is only as good as the words you say.”

Studies show living a healthier life has long been the most popular New Year’s resolution.

Whether the resolution is working out more, losing weight, eating better or drinking more water, a research conducted by University of Scranton in October found that 38 percent of Americans want to lose weight and live healthier in 2017.

The difficult part is following through.

Lemon noted that people who participate in early morning fitness tend to stick with it more. His 5 a.m. classes are the most popular and the participants come to the gym more times a week on average.

During the evening, it’s easier for someone to skip a workout if he gets out of work late, she wants to spend

time with family or anything else gets in the way.

In the morning, “you get in the door, get your workout done and feel so much better throughout the day,” Lemon said. “The morning people can’t make excuses about a happy hour or a Bronco game — they just have to get out of bed.”

Lemon laughs at the excuses he hears now that he owns his own CrossFit gyms, whose members include individuals who are obese, pregnant or missing limbs.

“I think people can get intimidated, thinking they can’t make it through the workout,” Lemon said. “The workouts can be scaled or modified for anybody in any CrossFit gym. Anyone can do it — they just have to want to do it.”

According to the University of Scranton study, 75 percent of people maintain their resolutions through the first week of making them. The number of people working to achieve their resolutions continues to decrease as the year goes on.

“I think a big part of backing away from a resolution is that it really is hard to stick to a routine and dedicate the time,” said Kelsey Whisler, fitness manager at South Suburban Parks and Recreation. “They may get disappointed that they may not be able to accomplish what they set out to do, so they give up altogether.”

Whisler encourages people to set realistic goals. If someone’s goal is to run a marathon, he or she should start training for a 5k race first.

Taking advantage of trainers, being led through group fitness and learning how to use equipment are great starting points for healthy goal achievement, Whisler noted.

Lemon is a fan of all fitness. Getting out and moving in a way that interests an individual will make a huge difference in how likely he or she is to achieve their goals.

“Any fitness is good fitness,” Lemon said. “There are classes like Pilates, yoga and Zumba, but you won’t find me there because they don’t interest me. Also, I have no rhythm. But people should try new things to get the momentum going.”

It is important to remember that improved fitness is a gradual process.

“Most people who come to the gyms aren’t looking to be fitness models or John Elway,” Lemon said. “They are trying to be the best versions of themselves. We should support those kinds of people.”

Forever their sensei: Karate legend takes final bow Beloved instructor, 84, retires after touching countless lives

World renowned karate master Yutaka Yaguchi paused from his speech and looked around his dojo, which was overflowing with students, varying belt colors tied around their white attire.

“Please train hard into the future,” the 84-year-old said through a translator.

And he bowed to his class for the last time.

At the Lone Tree Recreation Center on Dec. 17, Yaguchi held his last karate training, teaching and testing seminar before his retirement.

In his native Japanese, Yaguchi talked about the bittersweet nature of the day.

“I am happy about retiring, but it is also melancholy,” Yaguchi said through the translator. “I am very sad I will be away from the people I have trained.”

Yaguchi was born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1932. He began karate training in 1952 and moved to the United States to teach the martial art in 1965. In 1974, he founded the International Shotokan Karate Federation of Colorado, which is still active at 226 S. Broadway in Denver.

Mark Tarrant, who has trained with Yaguchi for 40 years, moved to Denver specifically to train with the karate legend. He said that Yaguchi’s open nature and closeness with his students generated a deep love for the master. More than 150 participants, some from as far as Africa and Israel, came to Lone Tree to witness the final class taught by their sensei, the term used for a karate instructor.

“Normally, the instructors are so detached from their students, but not sensei,” Tarrant said. “He prefers to mingle with the students — to joke, drink and eat with us.”

Though some of his students mentioned that Yaguchi, a Denver resident, will be traveling more now that he is retired, Yaguchi said he wants to spend time learning something new.

“My weakest point is language,” Yaguchi said through the translator. “I have a lot of other means of communication, such as movement of my body. I know myself very well and speaking the (English) language has been a barrier for me.”

Tarrant recently helped build a studio in Yaguchi’s basement so Yaguchi can continue practicing karate and have a space to train his grandson in martial arts.

Catherine Margolin started training with Yaguchi in 1984 and trained with him until moving to Alaska in 2006. She so admired Yaguchi that she wrote a book about the karate master titled “Mind and Body Like Bullet: Memoirs of

A wide smile spread across her face when she mentioned his sense of humor.

“There used to be this thing that happened in the dojo where sensei would hide our shoes after class,” Margolin said. “He was always doing practical jokes like that.”

Margolin flew to the final training event from her home in Alaska.

She mentioned how bittersweet her sensei’s retirement was for the karate community.

“It feels like an end of an era,” Margolin said. “It feels like getting kicked out of your house, almost.

WINTER SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR DOG

While your playful pup may enjoy romping in the snow, the cold weather is not the place your pet should stay for long periods of time.

Coloradans are infamous for their love of dogs. Bill Bellerdine, sergeant in charge of animal services for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, notes this fact after receiving several calls a day during a snowstorm from people concerned for pets in their neighborhoods.

Shelter requirements The below-freezing temperatures during Colorado winters call for extra care of pets. Bellerdine said if dogs are not inside or do not have a doggy door, it is important they have a shelter set up for winter weather.

Centennial, for instance, has an ordinance about pet safety in the winter season.

According to the ordinance, pets must be protected from the wind, rain, sun and snow by having a shelter that is large enough for the dog to turn around, is well ventilated and clean, is structurally sound

neighbor about a Siberian husky who was left out all day. When officials responded to the call, they discovered the dog could use a doggy door to go inside, but would rather be in the snow.

Bellerdine emphasized dogs

Even though Bellerdine said that 90 percent of the calls he receives about dogs left out in the cold result in no safety action needed, the calls have helped save the lives of some animals.

“If it is too cold for you to be outside,” Bellerdine said, “it is definitely too cold for your dog.”

On the leash Certain precautions should be taken when pets are taken for walks in the cold and snow.

The salt used to clear sidewalks can dry out and damage paws.

Bellerdine suggested washing the paws and the bellies of pets after a walk to clean off salts and chemicals.

Sculpture will ‘bring people back to childhood’ Toy-like sculpture erected in Discovery Park

The addition of an ice skating ribbon and library full of children’s activities has made the east end of Mainstreet in Parker more kid-friendly — but artist Chris Weed wants adults to share in the wonder.

“I wanted to bring people back to childhood a bit,” Weed said, standing next to “Jacks,” his stainless steel sculpture of one of the world’s oldest games, installed on Dec. 16 in Discovery Park. “The idea behind it is to get adults to see art through the eyes of a child.”

Fabrication of the 3/16-inch-thick stainless steel artwork began in July.

Portions of the jacks were welded together in Weed’s Colorado Springs workshop and transported by flatbed truck, no easy feat considering that each one weighs three tons. Other pieces of the $150,000 sculpture were assembled on site.

“It literally is a puzzle,” Weed said, explaining that recent cold weather delayed the welding process. “It’s been quite the engineering challenge.”

“It was such a good fit for what we

wanted Discovery Park to be,” said Carrie Glassburn, cultural communications administrator for Parker, of the sculpture. “The whole idea is it’s supposed to be fun… People can touch it, they can go under it, they can interact with it.”

“We’re seeing homogenization in the industry, no question,” said David Norden, CEO of Taos Ski Valley Inc., an independently owned resort in New Mexico.

Mega ski operators like Vail can afford to advertise worldwide, and they grab headlines when they grow. But an industry association that tracks skier visits says that smaller, independent resorts are holding their own.

Owners of the independent mountains say they’re trying to buck the consolidation trend by competing with personality.

At Taos, resort owners are investing in local art to play up the region’s acclaim for Southwestern art, especially pottery and textiles.

“As with any business, it’s important to try to come up with, `What is your differentiating factor?’” Norden said.

One Colorado resort uses its lack of amenities as an attraction. Silverton Mountain in southwest Colorado has no terrain for beginners or intermediates. No ski school. No hotel. Just one lift and 1,800 acres of uncrowded terrain for expert skiers. No frills. Just thrills.

“We set ourselves apart by limiting the daily skier visits and making the

experience the opposite of others,” said Silverton Mountain co-founder Jen Brill, who happily boasts that her mountain sees as many skiers in a season as the megaresort Breckenridge Ski Resort sees in a busy winter weekend.

Another independent resort touts its family-friendly vibe, taking pride in its lack of alcohol sales and abundance of ski lessons.

Brad Moretz, co-owner of Appalachian Ski Mtn. in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, said independent resorts simply need to play up their differences to keep a hold in a consolidating industry.

“There are lots of people that look for a more personal experience,” Moretz said. “The conglomerates do a good job, but there is absolutely no replacement for pride of ownership.”
