Pandemic is unusual crisis hurting college enrollment Hard times usually cause numbers to rise at community colleges

The coronavirus pandemic is causing fewer students to enroll in Colorado’s community college system this fall, especially those who are first-generation and low-income.

The roughly 9% drop in enrollment highlights the brutal situation that COVID has created and decisions thousands of students face. The pandemic also is altering student behavior patterns. Typically, community college enrollment increases during an economic downturn.

That’s not the case right now.

Community colleges tend to educate students who are more likely to be adults, low-income, or first-generation than are students in four-year colleges. Schools have shifted to hybrid instruction to ease coronavirus concerns about the spread of the virus, and online enrollment has grown. But that doesn’t ease the challenges students face and that are exacerbated by the virus, such as feeding families, needing to work, and having a harder time juggling finances while attending school.

If institutions can’t find a way to lure students back, it could affect the long-term prospects for both students and colleges.

President Betsy Oudenhoven said enrollment at her college has decreased 18% from last year. Surveys of the Aurora campus show students who are low-income, first-generation and not from the U.S. have been more likely not to attend this fall — groups that make up a large share of her student body.

“It just feels like layers and layers that have hit our students really hard,” Oudenhoven said.

State data show that university undergraduate enrollment also is decreasing.

David Baime of the American Association of Community Colleges said that nationally two-year colleges are experiencing a 10% to 12% decline in enrollment.

Out of the ordinary The decrease is atypical. Even during the Great Recession, as in other economic downturns, community college enrollment increased. That’s because people might seek out new skills and credentials that they hope will make them more employable. But it appears that COVID is squeezing people harder.

“Community college students are typically working more. They’ve got more familial responsibilities,” Baime said. “All these things have made them the likeliest people to be impacted by this.”

Colorado’s community colleges are seeing pronounced declines this year among first-generation students, with numbers dropping by 16%. Meanwhile, Pell Grant-eligible students who receive more federal aid due to

Almost every community college is enduring student population declines. But the Colorado Community College System has lost fewer students than it feared, said Joe Garcia, the system’s chancellor.

“For a while, we thought we were going to be down 30%, and that was quite alarming,” Garcia said.

Arapahoe Community College President Diana Doyle, who heads one of two schools in the state that saw enrollment increases, said factors behind the growth include serving a greater proportion of middle-class students, and a smaller segment of lowerincome and first-generation students than at other community colleges.

The virus, however, has changed Arapahoe’s demographic, she said.

More students who typically would attend a four-year university are attending Arapahoe instead, Doyle said.

State universities see declines The changes in student behaviors also have affected state universities.

Undergraduate enrollment has fallen at the University of Colorado system, the Colorado School of Mines, Western Colorado State University, and Adams State University, according to numbers provided by the Colorado Department of Higher Education.

Adams State experienced a 6% dip in undergraduate enrollment.

The school, however, is reporting flat enrollment this fall thanks to an increase in graduate students.

Adams State expanded opportunities at its graduate schools to students who might need additional training during the pandemic, said Cheryl Lovell, the school’s president.

Half of the regional university’s population in Alamosa is considered in high financial need, Lovell said.

“We knew our growth in graduate programs would not only meet workforce demand to provide highly trained, skilled advanced employees,” Lovell said. “It also provided an upward mobility for our students to advance themselves professionally.”

At the Community College of Aurora, Oudenhoven said the enrollment dips won’t impact student services and support this year. The enrollment declines won’t prompt immediate cuts thanks to federal stimulus money.

She does worry about the future, she said.

Denver Elections anticipates such a busy election, it went out and found new places for people to cast their ballot.

A release from Denver Elections on Sept. 29 said it will move operations from its main office vote center, on 14th Avenue, down a block to the McNichols Building in Civic Center Park “so that the entire Denver Elections building can be utilized for ballot processing.” The move was prompted as the office anticipates high voter turnout and because this year’s ballot includes three double-sided cards. The McNichols offices, at 144 W. Colfax Ave., will open Oct. 12.

It’s the latest change announced by the office, which said earlier this month that all Denver ballots were getting a first-class upgrade.

The city will have six more voting centers than in 2018, bringing the

total to 36. They include the Pepsi Center, which will be used as a voting center for the first time ever and will open on Oct. 30. The voting centers allow people to vote in person or drop their ballots. Most voters in Denver use the city’s 38 drop boxes to cast their ballots, a contactless option City Clerk and Recorder Paul López encouraged in the release.

Several schools will also be used as voting centers. They include: Abraham Lincoln High School, East High School, George Washington High School, Hamilton Middle School (the Montbello Campus), Morey Middle School and South High School.

The release said a change to state law discouraging voting at police stations not housed in multipurpose buildings means the Denver Police District 3 station on University Boulevard won’t be used as a voting center. Its drop box will still be available.

Ballots will be mailed out in Denver to active voters starting on Oct. 9.

State financial support drops Governmental support for higher education fell by 5% this year. Community colleges and small regional universities rely more heavily on money from the legislature than do the University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State University.

Next year is a bigger concern. State tax revenue will still be down and federal stimulus money that ensured colleges weren’t cut by 58% this year aren’t a guarantee, Garcia said.

“We’re hoping they will continue to invest in our future by investing in our students and our institutions, but we’re not confident that that’s going to happen,” he said.

Enrollment will also still be a concern, as it is a heavy driver of revenue. Larger schools such as the University of Colorado Boulder depend

on tuition revenue. Preliminary data at the University of Colorado Boulder indicates overall fall 2020 enrollment dipped about 1.6%.

The school expects to feel the squeeze from lower tuition revenue for several years, said spokeswoman Deborah Mendez-Wilson. The school will trim costs, including eliminating vacant positions, cutting discretionary spending, postponing some commitments, and consolidating.

Presidents like Oudenhoven said despite the worries, the focus for her school is making this semester work for students.

“I’m trying to figure out with my colleagues, what can we do?” she said.

“We’re not helpless in this. We’re not controlling the virus, but we control our response to it.”

More families are registering their intent to home-school their children.

Of the five largest districts, Jeffco appears to show the biggest jump.

Through the end of August, Jeffco had received 1,506 letters of intent to home-school. Based on state data, that would be a fivefold increase over last year.

But in most districts, the number of home-schooling families remains low overall and doesn’t account for most of the missing students.

In the press conference, Polis said that home-schooling properly requires a significant investment of time and resources.

“Don’t think you’re homeschooling because you’re giving your kid a book and leaving them all day at home,” Polis said.

Enrollment falls below expectations In Aurora, a more detailed look at enrollment trends in September showed an unexpected change: fewer new incoming students. The biggest gap was among kindergarten children. Aurora enrolled only 86% of its expected kindergartners.

The large Denver metro area districts are not alone. The Journal newspaper in Cortez reported in late August that nearly 20% of students hadn’t shown up in the 2,500-student Montezuma-Cortez district in southwest Colorado, while Boulder Valley school district has 1,000 fewer students than last year, the Daily Camera of Boulder reported.

And in a legislative hearing in September, officials told lawmakers that districts in the Pikes Peak region around Colorado Springs cannot account for as many as 4,000 students.

Families appear to be sitting out the school year for several reasons.

Some well-off families have formed learning pods with private tutors or enrolled their children in private schools that offered in-person instruction when many school districts started the year online. I was one of her heirs. Some of her heirs are airheads.

If you say, “Johnny went to the head,” it means one thing. If you say, “Johnny went to the head of the class,” it means another.

If you say, “Johnny went to the john,” it means the same as “Johnny went to the head.”

My therapist, Barb Dwyer, explained, “The reason you don’t have any friends, Mr. Smith, is that you make a word game out of everything someone says. Do you see?” “`I see,’ said the blind man to his deaf wife, as he took out his hammer and saw.”

One of my favorite old saws is, “Haste makes waste.”

An old saw is what’s known as an idiom.

Every village has an idiom.

Some villages, like Washington, D.C., have more than one idiom.

Idioms, most of them, are clichés, and as you know by now I avoid clichés like the plague.

You’d better read between the lines before using a cliché around

As everyone knows, “waste” and “waist” are homophones.

Some words have more homophones than others.

As many of you may know by now, Merriam-Webster has removed the word “awesome” from its 2021 edition dictionary.

The reason given? “Overused and misused to death,” according to spokesperson Anne Teak. “`Awesome,’” Teak continued, “has over 100 perfectly good synonyms that rarely get used. It’s just not cool.”

We were so poor when I was growing up my mother and father could only afford one book and that was a dictionary.

On Saturday night, my mother would sit my sister and me down in front of her and make up a story by flipping from page to page.

“Measles ... the ... inarticulate ... goat ... ate ... guardrail.”

Rarely did her stories make any sense, but because of them I

learned to comprehend art critics.

I never get tired of words.

How many words are there in the English language?

The Oxford dictionary has 273,000 words (171,476 in current use; 47,156 being obsolete; and around 9,500 derivative as subentries).

The English language is an everchanging organism. Some once popular words such as “bumbershoot” make way for others such as “pooka.”

John McWhorter, associate professor of comparative literature at Columbia, reminds his students language is always adding and subtracting words.

Certain words become archaic (“betimes”) as new words (Merriam-Webster added “detectorist” in 2019) are infused. “Infused” is a good example of a newly popular, long existent, word.

The English language is ... wondrous.

Getting the proper rest keeps us at our best

hether we find ourselves setting the pace for the race, or just trying to keep the pace, we should always find time to give our mind and body a little rest.

WINNING Some of you WORDS have shared that these past several months have given you a chance to slow down, get back into forgotten hobbies or start new ones. Spending more quality time with friends Michael Norton and family. And others have shared that they have never been busier and that their mental stress and physical fatigue have never been higher with little or no time to take a breather.

In a bigger, faster, harder, go go go, world, sometimes we get so wrapped up in trying to keep up, we forget to take care of ourselves along the way. We schedule more meetings or calls than we can fit

into our day. We squeeze more work into our already jam-packed weekends and try and justify it by saying that it “needs” to get done. Or we try and fool ourselves into believing that we are the only ones who can do it, denying our mind and body the rest we need to perform at our best.

There are many among us who live with an “early to bed and early to rise” attitude. Then again, many others have developed a habit of “late to bed and early to rise,” eroding the amount of quality rest we need to recharge the body and the mind.

Those of us who use planning tools and calendars to manage our day have found it very helpful to block off specific times in the calendar for answering emails, making calls, having meetings, research, reading, writing, workouts, and other things that fill our day. I subscribe to this habit of blocking off specific amounts of time in my calendar to make sure I am managing each day as best as I can.

That method of managing my calendar has helped to improve

my productivity in all areas. What I started adding to my calendar are blocked times for rest — 15- or 30-minute blocks of time where I allow myself to take a breather, sit quietly, and just rest, giving my mind and my body a pause. And these little added moments of rest seem to inspire creativity, clarity, and vitality, energizing me for the balance of the day and into the evening.

This is not new news or revolutionary thinking. I have heard many of these suggestions before and I brushed it off thinking that I was too busy and that I needed to get things done. And then, when I heard someone talk about it one more time, it finally made sense.

Hearing the results that others were experiencing, I decided that building time into my day for rest was just as important as anything else.

If we allow the rush and crush of life to consume us, at some point stress and fatigue will become the norm. The thing is this, it’s a choice we get to make.

breaks when we need to, block off committed time in our crazy busy schedules to take a rest. The key word here is committed. When I first started trying to block off my calendar for moments of rest, I would see that as a discretionary time slot. That If I needed to slip in a call or a meeting, I would just override my blocked-out time of rest. But now, if it isn’t defined as important or urgent, nothing steals my time slots of rest.

and the smallest small businesses. At the same time, we’ll kickstart longterm growth by ending corporate giveaways and investing instead in workers, skills training and the industries of the future. If we roll up our sleeves and come together, we can not only survive this crisis but build an even stronger economy that works for every Coloradan.

If you’re elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

We must protect Coloradans’ health care coverage, including for those with preexisting conditions. We must take action to bring down the cost of health care, including lower prescription drug prices. And we must act urgently to combat the threat of climate change. I know that it takes unity to overcome crises. As a brewpub owner, I understand what small businesses need to recover and thrive post-COVID-19 … as a Coloradan, I feel the frustration of having leadership in Washington that would rather argue than get things done for us ...

We’ll only succeed by doing things differently.

Colorado lags behind other states in education spending, with more than 30 states, including many in the West, spending more per pupil, according to U.S. Census data. What should Colorado’s senators do to ensure states such as

Colorado can spend more to support students?

Education is the best investment we can make in our kids and our future — but right now, we’re not investing enough. We must invest in every aspect … from educators to electives, with an emphasis on underserved students through the Title I program. We must do what I did as mayor of Denver and work toward universal preschool. And we must increase college affordability and expand pathways to skills training.

Alongside groups of dedicated educators like Colorado Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers — whose endorsements I’m honored to have received — we’ll build thriving, equitable public schools.

As Colorado housing prices continue to climb, how can senators increase the supply of affordable housing, or ensure that more of the current housing stock is affordable?

Affordable housing is a fundamental necessity, and it should be within reach for every Colorado family. If elected, I will push for inclusion of affordable housing in any major infrastructure package we consider, ensure all new federal housing units meet accessibility guidelines for individuals with disabilities, and hold lenders accountable for discrimination and predatory housing loans. I’ll also work to end disparities due to decades of racist, segregationist housing policy by expanding the low-income housing tax credit and ensuring compliance with the 1968 Fair Housing Act. These steps can ensure every family has a place to call home.

getting Americans back to work must be our No. 1 priority. Prior to COVID-19, Colorado’s economy saw record job growth, wage increases, its (historically low unemployment rate), and an outdoor recreation economy that employed 229,000 workers and added $11 billion to the economy annually. Working together, we can return to that economic climate and ensure that every Coloradan is safe and healthy.

If you’re elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

In the past six years, I’ve helped move the Bureau of Land Management headquarters to Colorado, got funding for the Arkansas Valley Conduit to ensure 50,000 Coloradans have access to clean drinking water, secured millions to repair Interstate 25 and Interstate 70, and passed the most sweeping conservation legislation to protect our national parks in the last 50 years. I’m going to build on these accomplishments over the next six years and continue to find common-sense solutions that drive Colorado’s economy, protect Colorado’s public lands and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure.

I’ve introduced a number of bipartisan bills in the Senate that would increase minority access in STEM education and help students of all backgrounds pay off their loans.

I’ve worked hard to identify and address the root cause of the lack of affordable housing and subsequently worked to secure millions of dollars from the federal government to ensure affordable housing and assistance for those experiencing homelessness in Colorado. Moving forward, we can guarantee more affordable housing by expanding the low-income housing tax credit, preserving existing affordable housing, and making the housing credit better serve extremely low-income families and families in rural areas and Native American communities.

Comedians, actors and producers are creating a variety of new podcasts

“It’s a long time to be sitting around twiddling thumbs, and we’re creative people,” Montour-Larson said. “We have things to share with the world.”

ithout many opportunities to perform in front of a live audience, some Denver-area entertainers have turned to podcasting as a new way to grow an audience and stay creative.

Local entertainers, including comedians, actors and producers, have started these shows to stay relevant and busy as the weeks of industry shutdowns due to COVID-19 have turned into months.

Denver resident Anthony Kapfer, a local comedian, started a show with friends called “Is This Anything?”

The show, with six episodes so far, started as just a video call between friends and eventually blossomed into a podcast.

The four hosts, some in Denver and others in New York City, meet up on Zoom and try out new joke ideas with each other, then offer tips for how to make the concept stronger and funnier.

“We just wanted to meet up because it had been two months since we had a chance to work on new material in front of an audience,” Kapfer said. “It’s a nice way to feel like we’re still doing stand-up comedy in a time when we can’t do stand-up in the way we’ve done it for years.”

Sometimes, the show has guest comedians on to try out their material. Everyone has the same amount of time to run through their ideas and get feedback. One reason for working on jokes, even without a chance to perform them, is to have fresh ideas when live shows resume.

“We want to have new stuff,” Kapfer said. “We don’t want to go back to comedy doing the same jokes we were doing six months ago... everything has changed.”

For Kapfer and his fellow hosts, it has been strange going so long without telling jokes to an audience.

“The podcast has been really nice because it sort of forces me to think about writing,” he said. “It’s easy at a time like this to think: ‘what’s the point?’”

The show features everything from fully developed jokes to simple strands of an idea.

“It’s nice to have a reason to get out of the bed and do something creative,” Montour-Larson said. “Especially when there’s so much happening you have no control over.”

In addition, the hosts, who are also neighbors, get to use many of the skills they’ve gained through working in theater including producing, acting, teaching and marketing.

Getting together Chris Starkey, who owns Imprint Group, an entertainment company in Denver, started his podcast, “Dance Dads,” after a video of himself and his daughter dancing went viral.

“It’s four dads with kids who are the same age,” Starkey said about the podcast.

“We talk about relevant topics that have to do with being home during COVID.” Starkey’s other hosts include Randy St. Pierre, a stage technician at the Lone Tree Arts Center, performers Brian Smith and Klint Rudolph and Paul Dwyer.

“We used to get together every Friday anyway and talk about entertainment,” Starkey said. “The podcast gives us an opportunity to still get together.”

As of press time, the show was planned to launch the last week of September.

The hosts also have another podcast called “Places Please” about the entertainment industry in the Rocky Mountain Region. This show, however, was discontinued until live shows begin again.

“I tell people all the time it’s the greatest opportunity of our career ... to create a personal brand or podcast,” Starkey said. “Because you have everyone’s attention right now.”

Montour-Larson also said she sees this as a good time to start a podcast.

“If you have something you want to share with the world, just do it,” she said.

“Don’t worry about making it perfect.”

Edith Weiss and Christy Montour-Larson talk about how to preserve homegrown produce in one of their first episodes of “Upside Down Tulips,” a new gardening podcast.

Edith Weiss for instance, both formerly worked in theater but when all their shows were canceled, they decided to start a podcast about gardening.

The show, “Upside Down Tulips,” gives tips and answers questions about growing flowers, vegetables, herbs, indoor plants and other topics like composting and canning

produce.

“Anything that grows, we talk about,” Montour-Lasron said.

Montour-Larson and Weiss are both long-time gardeners and have noticed their hobby getting more attention in recent months as COVID-19 has pushed residents into the outdoors.

Katie DeGroot is ready to help people show their funky side.

DeGroot opened The Peace Place, a shop filled with her handmade tiedye creations, at Quincy Avenue and Broadway in late August.

The shop has way more than rainbow T-shirts: DeGroot’s shelves and racks are lined with baby clothes, hoodies, hats and tapestries in a mind-melting menagerie of colors and designs.

“No two pieces are alike,” DeGroot said. “That’s the beauty of tie-dye: Everyone can find the exact piece that speaks to them. Colors communicate a elot about how we feel and how we see ourselves, and I want to help people nexpress that.”

DeGroot herself wasn’t always so expressive. With a mind for math and science, she spent years in the corporate world, in accounting and finance.

But cubicle life was stultifying, and the Colorado native wanted to break free.

“I always thought you had to be precise with your creativity,” DeGroot tsaid. “For some reason I had it in my head that if you were going to draw or paint or write, you had to do it with

Then, she discovered tie-dye, where she found the freedom to let her freak flag fly.

“I can put my love and heart into every piece,” she said. “Plus, it gets me out of my head.”

Still, she finds it a melding of the analytical and the creative: There’s the science of how different dyes will respond to different fabrics, or the geometry that allows for complex designs.

DeGroot began selling her creations

at fairs and festivals a couple years ago, but 2020 was supposed to be the start of her grandest adventure. She planned to toss her equipment and her dog in her van and strike out across the country, selling her wares at craft fairs along the way.

Alas, the pandemic had other plans, and DeGroot found herself grounded.

But soon she found what would become her shop, an old store built in the early 1920s at 4300 South Broadway.

“It’s a different kind of adventure,

“It was meant to be.”

DeGroot made space in the shop for other local artisans, who sell everything from rings and jewelry to dried mushrooms. She hopes to build a studio where she can teach her craft to others.

“I want to do more than sell my art,” DeGroot said. “I want to spread goodness and kindness. Come in and say hi.”

Historic opera house touts fabulous find

For a number of Julys, we have been making a trek to a longtime favorite Colorado location — sky-high Leadville. And we have often visited the 1879 Tabor Opera House, concerned about aging walls and stage ... A recent CPR program related really good news — we’ll encourage readers to plan a summer visit in 2021 and perhaps consider taking in a show, and adding some support to keep this historic gem, now owned by the City of Leadville, in condition to entertain us for another century ...

The story that aired recently was about a discovery of hand-painted curtains and stage sets, which will be an added draw when displayed.

In the early years, special artists toured the nation’s operating theatres, painting scenery appropriate for the planned productions — or just decorative pieces that might back soloists or groups of musicians ...

Minnesota-based Wendy Rae Waszut-Barrett, owner of Historic Stage Services LLC, stopped at the opera house while on a family vacation last year, toured the building, including the attic — and has been cataloging the collection, which she has described as “the finest collection of stage scenery in the nation.”

She located about 250 pieces in the building: screens, roll drops, wings and shutters, created by artists such as T. Frank Cox, who traveled the country creating sets and scenery for theaters.

In its heyday, the Tabor drew famous performers, including John Philip Sousa, Oscar Wilde, Buffalo

Bill and perhaps, magician Harry Houdini. (It usually offers a summer of programming these days, although the past COVID- summer was a no-go.)

A story about the first opening night reports that the crowd was thinner than expected — because a hanging was scheduled across the street ...

The Leadville Elks Lodge bought the building and added new curtains and set pieces. The group operated it through the start of motion pictures then sold it to local businesswoman Evelyn Furman, who — with her family — operated it until the City of Leadville bought it in 2016.

Set pieces remained piled in the attic — fortunately, the opera house did not suffer a fire or a leaky roof throughout the years — or an overly zealous neatnik!

The set pieces are painted on fabric screens and may suggest a manor, a forest, a village or a wooden cabin and more ...

Cox, a favorite of historian Waszut-Barrett, created a forest scene that has his own face peering through a knothole ...

He would also attend an opening performance and do lightning-fast portraits of audience members — a sort of “performance art.”

Waszut-Barrett, with a crew of volunteers, has hauled down hundreds of pieces that will be displayed as backgrounds for lectures, concerts and operas.

The Tabor Opera House Preservation Foundation is currently working on a $10 million renovation on the exterior of the building, including windows, which are always a touchy challenge for preservationists.

Programming for summer 2021 is not yet listed, but we’ll watch for it.

The mountain theaters make for a wonderful weekend outing and we’ll hope for successful seasons across Colorado — to be announced.

Drops in enrollment seem to be highest in the early elementary grades, though Denver Superintendent Susana Cordova said the district has also seen drops in high schools that work with students most at risk of dropping out.

Other families, having lost jobs and housing or suffering from illness or the death of relatives from COVID, may be in crisis. They might be homeless or have moved out of state or sent their children to live with relatives.

Officials stressed the emotional

expectations,” Rogers said.

Employers, agencies play role Anthes asked employers to be flexible with working parents so they can support their children and asked community organizations that work with families in severe poverty to make sure to ask about schooling.

Rico Munn, superintendent of the Aurora district, said school staff have fanned out to knock on doors to find out how families are struggling and what barriers exist to children attending school, and other districts have taken similar steps.

On Sept. 29, Polis pledged 40 AmeriCorps volunteers to work with high-needs districts to reach out to families and encourage them to enroll. He also announced more than $2 million in housing assis-

tance to help 225 homeless families find stable places to stay.

Munn said the pandemic will affect every student’s life, but it doesn’t need to alter their long-term trajectories, which is a risk of not attending school.

“The way we can make sure this event is not life-changing is to provide as much continuity as possible,” he said. “Public school educators are here with the resources to support you and your family, but to do that, we need you to enroll your kids, whether that’s online or in-person.”
