The wait for eligibility is over for all adults and older teenagers in Colorado after coronavirus vaccine eligibility hit the general population starting April 2.

All Coloradans over the age of 16 were to be eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine, and all Coloradans over the age of 18 were to be eligible to receive the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, according to a March 29 news release from the governor’s office.

As the state moves through phases of vaccine scheduling, people in previous phases remain eligible, according to the state COVID-19 website.

State officials anticipate that everyone who wants vaccine shots will have access before the end of May, according to the news release.

Gov. Jared Polis emphasized it will take time for Coloradans to secure appointments.

“It could be next week; it could be in five weeks,” Polis said in the release. “So while availability opens to everyone this Friday, April 2, be patient and know that your time will come.”

Throughout April, a number of local cultural institutions will be hosting Día del Niño: Celebrating

All Children events. The events — some virtual, some in-person — are being offered as a partnership between the Mexican Cultural Center and Telemundo Denver.

Unemployment fund debt worries small businesses Colorado lawmakers try to lessen shock, but deficit is growing brutal

The last time Centennial Container saw the cost of its unemployment insurance premiums increase, owner Jim Noon didn’t think too much about the additional $40 a year per employee.

“I mean, it adds up, but it’s not close-the-business material,” said Noon, who called a January 2020 state law to increase the base wage employers must use to calculate insurance premiums “a cost of doing business.”

He’s more concerned about the increase he and other surviving Colorado employers face when higher fees start in 2023 to replenish Colorado’s depleted unemployment insurance trust fund.

The fund is about to hit a $1 billion deficit due to high unemployment during the pandemic. Other states are facing a similar crisis and trying to find a solution that doesn’t end up with employers being solely responsible for the debt. Gov. Jared Polis is also considering using some of the recent federal stimulus to pay down the loan.

The last time the trust fund was depleted and the state had to borrow money from the feds was during the Great Recession.

During that recovery, employers statewide were hit with added fees to pay the loan and replenish the fund. Noon said the surcharge tripled his annual insurance pay-

ment to $300 per worker.

“We had to pay it all back with just the regular old businesses who were left,” Noon said. “And it was difficult. I mean, it more than tripled our unemployment costs.”

As of March 29, Colorado owed the feds $985.7 million, up nearly $25 million in a week. It went up to $991.7 million a day later.

That’s already higher than the state Legislative Council’s forecast they presented just weeks earlier for fiscal year 2021 — and there’s still three months to go.

Burden is on employers Pandemic or no pandemic, Colorado employers — not the Legislature or taxpayers — bankroll the state’s unemployment fund so their workers can get up to 26 weeks of benefits if they lose a job. In the first six months of the pandemic, the fund distributed $1.1 billion before running dry.

That means Colorado has spent more than $2 billion on unemployment since the pandemic began. The federal loan is interest-free until Sept. 6.

In the Great Recession, Colorado’s federal loan ballooned to $578.2 million by March 2011, according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report.

Surcharges on insurance premiums kicked in and it took years for Colorado employers to pay it back. At some point, the business community backed an effort for the state to issue a bond to finance the debt. The bond was finally paid off in May 2017.

“As long as the loan stays interest-free, that’s in our favor,” said Tony Gagliardi, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business. “Last time

(with the bond), we had a pretty solid trust fund. We got rid of the unemployment surcharge. But all of that is going to come back. The surcharge is going to go back and my members are looking at an 84% increase.”

In an attempt to avoid a high surcharge this time around, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 207 last June to build up the trust fund faster by raising the base wage used to calculate insurance premiums. The law also postponed any trust-fund solvency surcharge fees till 2023.

Polis hasn’t made a decision on whether to use American Rescue Plan money to reduce the unemployment deficit.

“The governor is open to supporting the unemployment insurance trust fund with these stimulus dollars, and also wants to continue hearing ideas from Coloradans and community leaders on what would be most helpful for strengthening communities across the state,” Shelby Wieman, a spokeswoman for the governor, said in an email.

Deficit still growing But with thousands of Coloradans still unemployed — 245,481 were receiving some form of unemployment benefit as of March 13 — the deficit will continue to grow before it starts to shrink.

And beyond the debt, there’s the issue of getting it funded again. A healthy fund has enough money in reserve to handle unemployment payments for about a year. The ratio should be 1:1 so a healthy solvency level is 1 or higher, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Before the pandemic began, Colorado’s was

0.78, or already below the recommended minimum.

“The good news is for the businesses that have survived, they get a bit of a buffer” before rates increase, said Tatiana Bailey, an economist and director of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Economic Forum. “Especially for smaller businesses that have been negatively impacted, this would be really beneficial. … And the last thing you want is higher unemployment insurance payments to put a company over the edge when they’ve made it this far.”

Colorado isn’t the only state borrowing money to pay unemployed workers. As of March 29, there were 18 other states and the U.S. Virgin Islands with a federal loan. Colorado has the ninth largest loan, between $1.3 billion for Minnesota and $969.3 million for New Jersey. California led the pack, at $21.3 billion.

New York was second, at $10.4 billion, and Texas was third, at $6.7 billion.

States are in different stages of funding their unemployment benefits. Most states haven’t tapped into federal loans. Some states borrowed money but have dropped off the list, like Georgia, which put $1.5 billion from the CARES Act to pay off its loan and shore up its trust fund last fall to save employers an average of $350 a year per worker, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Opera guild names winners in contest $35,500 in cash awards distributed among singers

In years past, there was a Denver Lyric Opera Company and a group of supporters formed the Denver Lyric Opera Guild in 1965 to support singers ages 23-32 as they began their operatic careers. When that company folded, the guild members determined that they would continue their aid to young singers.

In 1984, the Guild began its signature program: Competition for Colorado Singers, with generous grants to winners so they can further their careers through education and performance.

This spring, 30 competitors were selected to sing arias for professional judges, and cash awards totaling $35,500 were given.

Usually the supportive DLOG members meet at various country clubs in the metro area, fall through spring, for “Opera on Tuesday,” luncheons plus performances by young singers with Central City Opera, Opera Colorado and graduate students in area universities.

Announcement of competition winners is made and celebrated in April.

With COVID restrictions, the luncheon meetings were not possible, but generous opera supporters donated funds and held the competition anyhow. The organization announced winners recently.

Music lovers can enjoy an afternoon or evening of opera, despite COVID. Dr. Jeremy Reger, of the University of Colorado’s College of Music was accompanist, as he has been for a number of years.

Soprano Anna Montgomery, 27, was first-place winner of the $6,000 Galen and Ada Belle Spencer Award. With a master’s in voice performance from Michigan State University, she also has received an Encouragement Award at the 2021 Rocky Mountain Region Auditions held by the Metropolitan Opera National Council and several other recent prizes. Denver residents are encouraged to participate in a preservation initiative that will protect and celebrate the city’s Latino-Chicano history.

The project is that of Denver Community Planning and Development, and is being led by Denver’s Landmark Preservation staff in partnership with the city’s I Am Denver Storytelling Project and the Mayor’s Office of Social Equity and Innovation.

The initiative will help create Denver’s first historic context that focuses on a specific ethnic, racial or cultural group. “Landmark Preservation also intends to develop future historic contexts that focus on other underrepresented communities like Denver’s African American, Indigenous and Asian American communities,” states a news release.

“The city respects that within the Chicano and Latino communities exists a multidimensional and multifaceted layer of diversity, including deeply rooted connections to Indigenous-First Nations and African cultures. This first Latino-Chicano Historic Context makes visible the rich history of our Chicano, AfroLatino and Indigenous-First Nations communities and honors their contributions,” states a news release,” states the news release.

The result of the project will be “a broad overview on the citywide settlement and development patterns of Latino and Chicano communities in Denver up to the 1990s. The project will identify significant locations and buildings connected to our Chicano and Latino communities in order to preserve and protect those spaces. The project will also help Denver build a more inclusive list of designated landmarks and historic districts and inform the citywide building survey, Discover Denver,” states the news release.

It is designed for those who self-identify as members of the various ethnic communities associated with Denver’s Latino/Chicano heritage, however, anyone who has valuable information to share about this important history is welcome to participate,” states a news release.

Show us the top candidates for tax-funded leadership roles

S

ome public-process issues deserve extra attention. House Bill 21-1051, now working its way through the Colorado Capitol, must be opposed.

The bill aims to rewrite portions of the Colorado Open Meetings Act and Colorado Open Meetings Law to allow public bodies to disclose just one finalist when choosing a new chief executive such as a city manager, school district superintendent or university president.

Unfortunately, a panel of the Colorado Court of Appeals recently reversed an earlier decision that open-government laws require the naming of multiple chief executive finalists. Instead it ruled that the University of Colorado regents did not violate CORA when it released only Mark Kennedy’s application for the CU presidency to the Boulder Daily Camera in 2019.

With that appeals ruling, the Legislature received a nod to take action, and the bill now in motion clearly steps the wrong direction.

We urge a strong no to House Bill 21-1051. Let’s fight to retain “open search” practices and oppose the “closed search” proposal.

We have made a habit of following school superintendent searches and final choices of high-level public

OUR VIEW officials fastidiously. Best-case scenario is when a school district narrows its search to at least three candidates, then invites them to meet the school board, tour the district, and meet community members. The names are shared and the process to name finalists is detailed in advance, clear and open. Worstcase scenario is when no names are provided and then a sole finalist is announced.

We believe the public, in direct participation in these processes and through available documents — and by media reporting — has the right to know and the right to interact in making these crucial decisions.

We understand the desire to make a hiring process somewhat private.

But here is the hitch with this logic in simple terms. The public sector should not operate like the private sector, although we often understand and see why it may want to: The private sector can hire its leaders behind closed doors and can follow whatever slight or intensive process it chooses. It can be a faster process and more private.

The choice of a superintendent involves a public-body, tax-funded position. The competition for these

public positions should be open.

Candidates should be held to an open, public process to help ensure that the best possible choice results.

These types of important decisions, involving taxpayer and leadership roles, have deep impacts in communities and should be above reproach. Let’s say those two core words again — above reproach. To attain this benchmark, the process for selecting these high-level leaders must be open and the names of finalists must be public record.

For our role in media, we aim to make sure a diverse pool of candidates is chosen, backgrounds are fully vetted, and no important questions go unasked. We recognize that public officials do ask stellar questions aplenty, but we can usually add additional valid questions.

Additionally, we look into business alliances, affiliations, potential cronyism, cultural diversity and more, which are important considerations.

We are not going to detail the other side of the coin, but we appreciate a comment from Frank LoMonte, director of the University of Florida’s Brechner Center for Freedom of Information, who cited research that counters one of the main pitches for closed searches.

“If the assertion that a closed search produces better outcomes were accurate, we would expect to find that more people leave prestigious higher-education jobs for presidencies in ‘closed search’ states as opposed to ‘open search’ states. However, we found no such evidence,” LoMonte wrote. “There was no discernible distinction in the credentials of the hires made in states with ‘closed’ searches versus those that conduct ‘open’ searches.”

Colorado Community Media President and Colorado Press Association President Jerry Healey is urging media outlets to mobilize to oppose this bill. He noted that CCM’s west metro coverage area just experienced a problematic “closed search” for superintendent of Jeffco Public Schools, which was responded to with an editorial.

Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition (CFOIC) has additional coverage on this House bill as well.

Take action Please contact your local state House and Senate representatives and urge them to oppose House Bill 21-1051. Sending an email to your representative’s office is quick and effective.

You might not care about vacuums, but suck it up

y vacuum cleaner has headlights. It’s a great feature. It allows me to vacuum in the dark. Nietzsche might say that “vacuuming in the dark” was a good metaphor for existence.

My vacuum QUIET cleaner also has DESPERATION its own half-hour television show. It’s a little repetitive: someone is always spilling tiny candies or flakey cereals and the vacuum easily takes care of it.

The cord, however, is never shown. The reason is simple: the cord makes a modern-day vacuum cleaner just as much of a pain in the neck as all of its predecessors because it invariably gets wrapped around something on the way to the

A vacuum cleaner was the first purchase I made that distinguished my childhood from adulthood.

Maybe this was true for you too?

My college apartments were always furnished, except for one thing. A vacuum cleaner.

I can’t remember whether I bought new or used. If new, I’m sure it was one of the least expensive on the market and didn’t have its own TV show.

A cheap vacuum cleaner is practically worthless. You have to pick up the particle, show it to the attachment, then stick it in.

Adulthood really settled on my shoulders when I bought a home. To a vacuum cleaner I was required to add a lawn mower, a washing machine and dryer, a dishwasher, stove and refrigerator. The works.

Although the dishwasher stopped working, exploded and flooded the wood floor which had to be sanded and varnished from the kitchen all the way to the first floor bathroom.

It meant leaving for 72 hours.

I drove to Durango, had green chili on my eggs at the Durango Diner, and came back.

One of these days I might be able to do away with the lawn mower.

And the snow shovel, snowblower and garden hoses, and move into one of those seniors-only places that look so tempting in the brochures.

Everyone is smiling and holding a glass or a putter. That’s for me.

But the truth is, each and every one of them has to have a vacuum cleaner. You can simplify your life in a lot of ways, but you’re still going to need a vacuum cleaner.

Unless you’re a hoarder.

None of the interior shots in these brochures indicates that hoarders would be welcome.

If there are 88 units there are at least 88 vacuum cleaners.

My mother had five. Each one was a specialist. If you know anyone who vacuums almost every day whether it’s needed or not you’ll understand.

My mother cleaned walls and ceiling, corners and crevices.

Obsessive? Absolutely. Difficult to be around? I began to stay in hotels when I went back to Michigan. It was better for everyone.

When I was a kid I’d see how others lived, in “lived-in” homes, and couldn’t believe my eyes. Naturally, I was envious.

For one of my birthdays she gave me a book: “How to Clean Everything.”

“Thanks, mom.”

“You’re welcome, son. Clean on.

Clean until your clean comes true.”

Famous last words are not only for the famous

f someone were asked to recall the last thing that you had ever said to them, what would you hope those words would be?

Famous last words are not just for the famous, and they are also not only limited to the dying. We all WINNING have something WORDS to say these days, don’t we? And our famous last words may not really be our final last words, they might just be our last words for now.

We know what this sounds like Michael Norton when we are in a disagreement, one of us might say something like, “That’s it, end of conversation.”

The last words. It’s not that the last word has to be contentious either, no, far from it. The last words could sound like, “I love you too.” And those are much nicer and warmer last words.

If we were to think back on a few of our most recent conversations,

Polis called the effort to administer COVID-19 vaccines “one of the greatest feats in human history” in the news release.

“Each vaccine is a step towards getting back to normal,” Polis said in the release. “Today is a monumental step forward in Colorado’s efforts to get vaccines to every person who wants one, and I want to thank our frontline heroes — both professional and volunteer — who have stepped up, racing to get shots into arms.”

As of March 29, about 70% of all Coloradans 60 and older have been vaccinated, including 79% of all Coloradans 70 and older, 71% of Coloradans 65 to 69, and 53% of Coloradans 60 to 64, according to the release. More than 1.5 million Coloradans have received their first dose of a vaccine, and almost 1 million have been fully immunized, the release said.

Mass vaccination sites underway Colorado recently launched six mass vaccination sites in locations around the state.

Depending on supply, a maximum of 6,000 doses per day will be administered at each site six days per week for a total of 36,000 doses each week through the program, according to the release. So far, 35,322 doses have been administered through those sites.

In recent weeks, Polis joined the launch of mass vaccination sites at the following locations: Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City and The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland, the release said.

we might be able to relate to this as we can probably recall exactly what someone said before we parted company, ended a telephone conversation, or signed off on an email or text. Now, if we take another minute to imagine how others are reflecting on the last thing that they heard or read from us, would we be satisfied with what we said, or would we want a do-over?

As we relive our final words in a disagreement, we may find ourselves justifying our attitude, tonality, and word choices, believing that we said exactly what we wanted to say exactly how we wanted to say it. But then a funny thing happens, time starts to soften our hardened hearts, and when we replay the whole conversation, we realize that even in the heat of battle, we may have been better served taking the high road.

A last word that is filled with loving-kindness is almost never forgotten. As we replay those conversations, we are filled with such a great feeling that we can hardly wait to see or hear from that person again.

As a matter of fact, the sooner the

better.

When we think of getting in the last word, we do have a choice in what we will say. Will our words be filled with words that we might regret later? Or will we speak something so wonderful and encouraging that our spouse, our neighbor, or a friend will look forward to seeing us or hearing from us again? Many will remember where we start the conversation, a large percentage will not recall the middle, but almost everyone will remember what is said at the end.

This year my mom passed away.

To say that she lived an interesting life would be determined by our interpretation or definition of the word interesting. She was very easy to tease and to rile up, especially if the subject was politics. And although the teasing was in good fun, she would sometimes end the call with a very colorful couple of words before abruptly hanging up.

Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, we knew that it was not looking good. Her heart was giving out. And although my mom was on-again and off-again when it came

to her faith, during our very last conversation, she asked me about certain Scripture. She said she had been dreaming of a chapter and verse number, and asked me to read her the associated scriptures. When we hung up the phone, I really had no idea that would be the last time we spoke, as she passed away that night. But as I look back on my last words to her being filled with God’s word, and her final words being, “I love you,” I take complete solace in how the call ended.

are open, in Pueblo County at the Colorado State Fairgrounds and in Mesa County at the Grand Junction Convention Center. On April 1, the state launched the final of the six mass vaccination site at Ball Arena in Denver.

The state’s Equity Outreach Team is working with community-based organizations, providers, local public health agencies and tribes to set up vaccine clinics in “underserved” communities across the state, according to the release. As of today, 111 clinics have been completed, with 10 to 12 clinics completed per week on average. More than 75 clinics scheduled through April 6 are expected to administer 30,400-plus doses, the release said.

Polis also announced that Colorado will be launching mobile vaccine clinics to create more access in coming weeks. These buses will travel to “small communities,” the release said. More information was forthcoming as those clinics become operational.

Not time to let guard down, data shows Polis’ office emphasized that it’s still a time for caution. Colorado’s coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue on a plateau that shows signs of rising again, according to state data.

Experts say undomesticated animals don’t need our help when temps drop and snow flies

ost Denver metro area residents are curled up inside during snowstorms and the coldest days of winter, but outside, there’s a whole other battle occurring.

The birds, deer, elk, prairie dogs, bears and the hundreds of other species in the area are sheltering, using instincts — honed over generations — to survive.

“One thing people need to understand is that wildlife is very sensitive,” said Andy Hough, environmental resource coordinator for Douglas County. “They can sense the storm coming.”

Many nearby animals will begin increasing their feeding in preparation to endure the storm without much access to food, Hough said. They will also move to a better location, such as an area with lower elevation, or a place with trees or shrubs, to shelter from the storm.

“Every species is different and all react somewhat differently,” Hough said. “They have the instincts to do what they need to do.”

Bears, which sometimes make their way into the metro area, may end up remaining in their winter dens longer when there are significant spring storms like the one Denver saw in mid-March, said Jason Clay, spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

“Winter is one of the seasons where it can be a little bit harder on wildlife. They have to search a little harder for food,” Clay said.

“But the moisture overall is a very good thing in the long run.”

This precipitation helps prevent future wildfires and fosters natural food growth in the spring.

“Big game animals are looking for green that comes with spring.

The green grasses help with nutrition,” Clay said. “Big storms may have short-term impacts on the wintering animals, but great longterm benefits.”

These animals have adapted to situations like the historic snowfall seen in the Denver area in March, Hough said.

“While that storm seemed intense for us, it is not abnormal for this area,” he said. “These types of storms have been happening since the beginning of time.”

It’s not unusual for residents to see birds and deer using their home’s trees to hide away from these storms.

“They are using that landscape anyway,” he said. “It’s not unnatural for them to curl up under someone’s spruce tree.”

The Denver area sees everything from mountain lions and bears to foxes, owls and sometimes even moose.

One of the most important things for residents who notice local wildlife during the cold months to know is that they shouldn’t attempt to help animals by feeding them.

“You can put feeders out for birds, but most other cases are illegal,” Hough said. “Much of what we feed wildlife is not the best thing for them, and it can cause health problems.”

Feeding can also lead animals to change their habits, which can cause nuisances and dangerous situations.

“These animals are very rugged.” Clay said. “They can survive these tough winters on their own … they don’t need our help.”

CPW has had many problems with residents feeding animals, which can result in death for the animal, disrupted migrations and other issues, Clay said.

these wild animals is by respecting local trail closures. In the Highlands Ranch Backcountry, an 8200-acre conservation area, wildlife managers close one trail system to help local golden eagles and elk populations get through winter.

“Elk survival strategy in the winter is to conserve as many calories as possible,” said Mark Giebel, director of the wilderness area. “If they have to move and burn calories to avoid humans, their winter survival rate is in jeopardy.”

Over the winter, elk are slowly starving due to the lack of food available in the season, Giebel said. That’s why the Wildcat Mountain trails, which serve as a historic elk wintering area and sometimes a golden eagle habitat, are closed during the winter.

“The winter closure over the past few years has not been effective, likely due to people violating

the closure,” Giebel said. “After most snowstorms we would see tracks of people who violated (it).”

This year, Giebel’s team has put up trail cameras to deter people from entering the area.

Hough’s team, like many in the front range, also works to preserve local wildlife by studying their movements and habits and coordinating that with upcoming development in the region. That includes adding wildlife corridors through projects like I-25.

“Mobility is an important factor for their life’s regimen but especially during critical times during harsh weather,” he said.

As more and more of the front range is developed and built upon, this task becomes increasingly difficult for wildlife managers.

“We can all have a part in conservation by trying to maintain natural habitats, improve degraded habitats and minimize disturbances,” Hough said.

Birders of a feather flocking for annual count

I

do not happen to be a “birder,” at least by the definition used by most United States birder organizations and followers.

My guess however, many of us conOUTDOOR sider ourselves LIVING birders to some degree. Most of us have an interest in birds, some feed and water our winged neighbors, especially during inclement weather, some of us may provide Ron Hellbusch bird houses in the spring. If we get uniquely close, we stop to observe size, color, we probably wonder if we have seen this species before.

The big difference may simply be how faithfully do we go outdoors on specific bird watching tours? Do we read about local bird populations? Are we a member of a birding group? Do we study bird routines? migration habits?

It comes down to generally how much time and interest do we commit to watching, feeding, studying, or traveling some distances to watch or photograph birds with other birders.

According to the American Birding Association (ABA) the latest numbers are much higher than one might guess. ABA will tell us about a 18% of our country’s population or 45M people are active birders. They will also suggest to us the interest in birding is growing. I sense that is realistic. That growing interest most likely is due to the significant interest in the environmental and nature-related issues generally. It is estimated $96B is generated by the overall birding interest. More specifically $17B is in the form of income and taxes generated from birding related activities. Moreover 782,000 jobs are associated with the birding industry.

ABA has about 12,000 members, most of which are active and faithful birders. Birders have valuable support from other active organizations both public and private. Some of those include Cornell (College) Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, American Bird Conservancy, the National Wildlife Refuge System. Add to this number are groups who have more specific bird focus, but who’s objectives support broader groups of birds, groups like Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants and Quail Forever, plus the supportive work of various state government wildlife and outdoors agencies.

Large numbers of books and publications have been written about birding from both a professional/scientific and personal interest level with knowledgeable writers, David Sibley and Jason Crotty, being two of the many popular birder writers. The birder organization, “Birdwatching”, produces a free weekly newsletter for interested birders simply by subscribing online with “Birdwatching.”

Bookstores and libraries are good sources as well for birder literature.

A great start for emerging birders is to take an active role in the popular “Great Backyard Bird Count” held nationally primarily to involve new, interested birders and give longer term birders an opportunity to search new bird species and to track changes in migration routes and timing. Mark your calendar for February 18-21, 2022 and make online contact via goggle with staff at “Great Backyard Bird Count” for details in preparing for next February event. There are opportunities to interact with skilled resources available to respond to questions.

‘It is your business’: Douglas County declares Child Abuse Prevention Month Hotline to report suspected cases is 303-663-6270

Douglas County commissioners adopted a resolution at its March 23 business meeting recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The commissioners did so “recognizing that the prevention of child abuse and neglect is helped by greater public awareness and supportive, involved communities,” according to a news release from the county.

“This proclamation is so important because what it does is it

reminds the community that if you see something involving a child that isn’t right to you, it’s OK for you to call,” said Commissioner and Board Chair Lora Thomas during the meeting. “Don’t ever be worried about ‘I don’t want to be a tattle-tale, this isn’t my business,’ It is your business.”

The board’s resolution encourages those who suspect child abuse and neglect to report their concerns immediately by calling the Douglas County child abuse and neglect hotline at 303-663-6270. Calls to the alternative statewide hotline, 1-844-CO-4-KIDS (1-844-264-5437) will be routed to Douglas County child protection professionals, according to the news release.

“In 2020 many families in our county needed extra support as they faced change, stress and uncertain-

ty,” Thomas said, according to the release. “We thank the individuals who made more than 3,700 calls to our Douglas County child abuse and neglect hotline last year and helped our children and families receive much-needed resources.”

Douglas County’s child abuse and neglect hotline received 3,724 reports in 2020, according to the resolution. This was about 600 fewer calls compared to the previous year’s reports, but that doesn’t mean there was a decrease in child abuse, said Ruby Richards with the county’s department of human services.

“We saw a decrease in reports in 2020 due to the pandemic and children not being visible in school and the community (for sports and activities),” Richards said.

“Our primary message to the Douglas County community is if you see something, and you’re worried, make the call,” said Commissioner George Teal, according to the release. “We believe everyone plays a role in the prevention of child abuse and neglect.”

Suspected abuse is enough to report to the hotline, according to the county’s resources.

“Each April, as the commissioners recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month, we highlight the importance of partnering to prevent child abuse and neglect, while recognizing that the social and emotional well-being of children and families is critical to our community every day of the year,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon, vice chair of the board.

Arts fest delayed but still on track Cherry Creek event had been planned for July, but has been moved to September

In 2020, the art education nonprofit CherryArts was forced to cancel its annual Cherry Creek Arts Festival due to COVID. This year, CherryArts plans to bring the festival back for its 30th iteration.

The event was initially planned for the July 4 weekend. But in a press release arch 31, the arts nonprofit announced that the festival would be postponed until Labor Day weekend to “adhere to safe practices” from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The festival will now take place September 4, 5 and 6.

“While we are all eager to return to in-person events and celebrations, first and foremost, we are focused on

ensuring the safety of our community,” said Tara Brickell, executive director and CEO of CherryArts.

“We’re hopeful that the COVID-19 restrictions will be at a lower level in September, allowing us to gather safely. We look forward to re-envisioning how to come together to support artists and arts education, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary event.”

To further ensure safety, the festival will now take place in “the creekside area” of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, just across the street from its traditional location in Cherry Creek North. The new space has the capacity for fences to help keep attendance at safe levels.

“We welcome the opportunity to help safely bring the community together to continue the long-held tradition of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival,” said Jeramy Burkinshaw, Cherry Creek Shopping Center’s general manager. “We look forward to celebrating the wonderful lineup of artists and participants and hosting the impressive variety of activities this Labor Day Weekend.”

Festival hosts hundreds of local and national artists and vendors and welcomes thousands of visitors to enjoy visual and performing arts, as well as immersive art experiences.

Proceeds from the festival benefit CherryArts, a nonprofit focused on arts education in Colorado. This year’s artist roster includes about 250 artists who were slated for the
