Starting tomorrow, we’ll get to work getting these repairs and improvements going — repairs and improvements that were designed by the people, that are now happening, thanks to the people,” said Mayor Michael Hancock in a celebratory speech, adding that the city would try to make sure that the projects hired locally.

The guys behind Denver Distillery could have produced a young bourbon during the last six years that they’ve been working on their tasting room along South Broadway.

head distiller Chad Peters refinished the basement of 244 S. Broadway to hold wood barrels for fermenting, added space for custom-made distillers and filtered through the state and federal licensing processes. The duo said recently that they’re looking to open Denver Distillery in either December or January.

City’s new Green Roof initiative spurs cheers, concerns Voters narrowly approve measure requiring vegetation on buildings

Starting Jan. 1, buildings in Denver larger than 25,000 square feet will have to devote a portion of their rooftops to vegetation, now that Denver voters have approved the Green Roof Initiative.

Opponents of the measure — who spent at least $250,000 in an unsuccessful effort to defeat it — believe this will have a slew of unintended consequences, and one of their leaders said Nov. 8 that she’s encouraging developers to get their plans in before the first of the year if at all possible.

“A lot of our developer members are reaching out, asking what they should do,” said Kathy Barstnar, executive director of NAIOP, a commercial real estate development association, and co-chair of Citizens for a Responsible Denver. “We can only encourage them to get their plans in before the end of the year because come Jan. 1, I believe it’s too unclear what they should do.”

“There really are a lot of pre-made modular green roof systems that meet the minimum requirements,” she said. “There is no need for anxiety.”

Green roofs cost more to build than conventional roofs, but they generally last much longer — four to five times as long, Tolderlund said. There are a lot of types of green roofs, and they vary in cost and complexity. Building owners realize a lot more benefit when they have deeper soil beds that support a wider variety of plant life, she said.

That extra soil and plant life does more to insulate the building and protect the roof membrane from the elements. It also adds weight, requiring additional structural support

and cost. But the ordinance doesn’t require developers to make that additional investment, Tolderlund noted.

The proponents had just $10,000 to get their message out.

“I think unfortunately we were a little slow in getting our education pieces out,” Barstnar said. “Once people understood it does in fact apply to all existing buildings, not just new construction, and there’s no exemption for schools or hospitals or condominiums, that it would in fact increase housing costs for people, then people understood that it sounds good in theory but it has these far-reaching effects.”

Brandon Rietheimer, the main organizer of the Denver Green Roof Initiative, said he and his supporters knew they’d have to be strategic. They spent their money on social media ads instead of on mailers and TV ads, but they also fanned out across the city

to Democratic House District meetings and to neighborhood association meetings.

“Those are the people who actively participate and vote in an off-year election,” he said.

The department will work over the next several months to create the necessary procedures and policies. The initiative itself requires the creation of a technical advisory board to guide implementation, and if certain things aren’t working, Denver City Council could change the ordinance with a two-thirds majority after six months have passed.

“Green roofs were already possible in Denver, and we will be working in the coming weeks to harmonize existing laws and policies with Initiative 300 and to build its requirements into our permitting and contractor licensing procedures,” CPD Deputy Director Jill Jennings Golich said in an emailed statement.

Denver is one of the first cities in the United States to require green roofs, though Toronto has done so for many years and Washington, D.C., uses green roofs as part of a stormwater management program to reduce pollution in Chesapeake Bay. San Francisco also has a green roof requirement that was adopted recently after a years-long process with stakeholders and elected officials.

Councilman Jolon Clark was similarly optimistic. “Denver residents have clearly said that they want this, and they want it now,” he said.

The city will take on debt to pay for projects ranging from a $13 million upgrade of the 16th Street Mall to $55 million for bus rapid transit along Colfax Avenue, from a $75 million care center for Denver Health to $38 million for the central library and dozens of other projects. However, about half of the debt will go to deferred maintenance on existing stuff.

The new debt will not result in a taxrate increase — but it also means tax rates aren’t decreasing, and increases in property values still could drive tax bills up.

Some of the supporters were set to receive funding from the bonds, including the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Zoo and others. Others were major corporate players, such as

Encana Oil & Gas, DaVita and United.

The Denver City Council voted unanimously to place the bonds on the ballot, though Councilwoman Debbie Ortega said she was disappointed that it didn’t include money for supportive housing, and there was some debate over the various projects.

By the spring, the city should be ready to start taking out the new debt ap-

proved by voters, Hancock said. Speaking on Nov. 8, he promised that the city would be transparent and accountable in its handling of the new debt.

“We don’t take the decision that they made last night lightly,” he said.

“I just walked in the door and said, `I’m a carpenter who wants to become a distiller, and I heard you want to open a distillery,’” he said.

Like many new distillers that need time to age their alcohol, Denver Distillery plans to start out with clear spirits like vodka and add rum and whiskey to

its menu later. The distillery is expected to be one of the first businesses in Colorado to get a distillery pub license allowing it to serve food, beer and other alcoholic beverages.

The Idaho-based distillery-restaurant Bardenay got a distillery pub license before backing out of its plans to open in Park Hill. Steamboat Whiskey Co. opened this year in Steamboat Springs with a distillery pub license and Idlewild Spirits opened with one in Winter Park during summer 2016.

Altogether, the state has issued 92 licenses to companies looking to make whiskey, vodka and other spirits.

“If you’re not going to buy our spirits, we want you to try some of the other products being made in Colorado,” Peters said. “We’re not going to have Jack Daniel’s or any of those other spirits.”

Study: Over-the-counter pain pills as effective as opioids in ER patients Adults were given ibuprofen and acetaminophen together

Emergency rooms are where many patients are first introduced to powerful opioid painkillers, but what if doctors offered over-the-counter pills instead? A new study tested that approach on patients with broken bones and sprains and found pain relievers sold as Tylenol and Motrin worked as well as opioids at reducing severe pain.

The results challenge common ER practice for treating short-term, severe pain and could prompt changes that would help prevent new patients from becoming addicted.

The study has limitations: It only looked at short-term pain relief in the emergency room and researchers didn’t evaluate how patients managed their pain after leaving the hospital.

But given the scope of the U.S. opioid epidemic — more than 2 million Americans are addicted to opioid painkillers or heroin — experts say any dent in the problem could be meaningful.

Results were published Nov. 7 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Long-term opioid use often begins with a prescription painkiller for short-term pain, and use of these drugs in the ER has risen in recent years.

Previous studies have shown opioids were prescribed in nearly one-third of ER visits and about 1 out of 5 ER patients are sent home with opioid prescriptions.

“Preventing new patients from becoming addicted to opioids may have a greater effect on the opioid epidemic than providing sustained treatment to patients already addicted,” Dr. Demetrios Kyriacou, an emergency medicine specialist at Northwestern University, wrote in an accompanying editorial.

The study involved 411 adults treated in two emergency rooms at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. Their injuries included leg and arm fractures or sprains.

All were given acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, plus either ibuprofen, the main ingredient in Motrin, or one of three opioids: oxycodone, hydrocodone or codeine.

They were given standard doses and were not told which drug combo they received. Patients rated their pain levels before taking the medicine and two hours later.

It doesn’t matter what you say when what you say doesn’t matter

ennifer went shopping on her own, and picked up everything we needed for a wonderful homemade meal, including something QUIET called a “salad kit.”

A salad kit comes DESPERATION in a clear bag, so you can see what’s in it.

What’s in it is washed and chopped lettuce, and a number of washed and chopped vegetables, and a small plastic sleeve filled with dressing.

All you have to do is empty the salad on Craig Marshall the plates.

Smith Of course, you pay for the convenience.

The vegetables, purchased separately, would cost half as much. But the vegetables would take far longer to wash and chop, and aren’t we all in a hurry?

“Edna. Where is he going with this one?”

“I wish I knew, Merle.”

Which brings me to an expression. It simplifies everything, just like a salad kit. It is inclusive, which saves you the trouble of a full, vivid explanation.

Here it comes.

Do you have a “go-to” restaurant?

Do you have a “go-to” sweater, or a “go-to” purse?

If you have been around the block with me, you already know how I feel about shortcuts when it comes to this blessed plot, this realm, this English.

Ixnay glib acronyms, is what I say.

Ixnay truncations.

When someone says “go-to,” sure, it saves words, but the art of conversation is reduced to a sleeve of Honey Mustard.

I can’t track down the expression’s etymology anywhere. So I am going to blame it on New York City. That’s where a lot of these expressions get their start.

The first time I heard “in a New York minute,” I thought it was clever.

Now? Not so much.

And neither is “not so much.”

Don’t get me wrong. If I were on an airplane and we were headed into a mountain, I would truncate all over the place.

Have you ever had a disagreement with someone that ended when he said or she said, “Whatever”?

Don’t try that around me. It’s very dismissive.

Americans keep it simple. The English, on the other hand, value words. I admit that I can’t always understand what they are saying, but it sure sounds eloquent.

Whenever I watch a film that features English actors, I turn on the closed caption feature. It’s a must.

“Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government,” comes from Monty Python, and until I read the caption it sounded like something being said backwards.

It’s called “phonetic reversal.” David Lynch experimented with it in “Twin Peaks.”

You can also find it in “Amadeus.”

Mozart says a number of phonetically reversed phrases, and many of them are vulgar.

There’s a woman who works at my grocery store who says, “Have a good one, hon,” to every man, woman, and child she sees.

Doesn’t she know? Doesn’t she know that there are a million and one things she could say?

“Only in the agony of parting do we look into the depths of love.” (George Eliot) “The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.” (Charles Dickens) “What’s so good about good-bye?”

(Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) If she started to say things like that, I would shop there twice a day.

“Have a good one, Honey Mustard.”

Even that is an improvement.

Be prepared for success or you’ll miss the chance

K, so here we go. Two weeks ago, we covered the role love plays in our past, present and future. Last week we took the same approach while we appreciated the history of WINNING our happiness. And today we wrap up WORDS the three-part series as we move into leveraging the successes of our past to pursue and drive our success now and in all of our future endeavors.

As I was taking a walk this morning Michael Norton and collecting my thoughts for this column I remembered a story I had once been told. There was a young boy who would walk with his fishing pole, tackle box, and a large bucket.

When asked why he was bringing such a large bucket, the young boy would optimistically and enthusiastically said that one day he had caught so many fish, but sadly he didn’t have a big enough bucket to carry the fish

home. And he promised himself that he would never let that happen again.

Most days he came home with an empty pail or one or two fish, and a little downhearted, but day after day, he could be found walking enthusiastically with the same bucket, fishing pole and tackle box and when asked he would energetically respond with, “This will be the day that I catch enough fish to fill this big bucket.”

You see, he had tasted success before and wanted to experience it again.

He planned and prepared for success, even though he had days where he fell short of his goal, not even catching one fish at all.

Was it a trophy we won in our youth? Maybe a job promotion? A diploma? Did we complete a project that we were recognized for? Was it something we did in our everyday role that we found extremely rewarding? Somewhere along the way, we caught so many fish we couldn’t fill our bucket. We tasted success and we knew what we did to achieve that success. It probably included planning, preparing and expecting to win.

So today, right now, right in this very

Back to our fishing story. On one side of the lake we have the young optimistic boy and his large bucket.

On the other side of the lake we have a man catching fish and only keeping the small fish, throwing all of the larger fish back into the lake. When a confused fellow fishing enthusiast questioned the man throwing back the larger fish, the fisherman reached into his backpack and displayed a very small frying pan. He shared that he couldn’t keep the larger fish because he was only prepared to catch and cook the smaller fish.

I am confident that you have connected the dots here. As we plan and prepare for future success, we need to keep our success bucket available.

We need to plan, prepare, and expect to win. We need to know that there will be some days where we get shut out, meet with setbacks, and we need to remind ourselves that failure is an

event, and it doesn’t define who we are as a person. We need to remind ourselves that if we expect only little wins, that is exactly what we will achieve.

Now little wins are OK, they do add up over time. However, if we are planning for future success, a bigger job, a larger home, a significant role in our community or church, a substantial change in our earnings or income, whatever that big success looks like in our future, let’s make sure we are carrying our success bucket with us as we travel to fish in all of the ponds, lakes and oceans of our life.

5 things to know about Swedish Medical Center renovations Local hospital to get improvements through fall and into winter

For the first time in nearly three decades, the emergency department at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood is getting a makeover.

Residents in the area will already be familiar with the sight of construction crews and orange cones, and patients and their families may have been through the temporary entrance.

Here are a few things to know about how the renovations will change the emergency room area.

Services are still running All emergency and hospital services will operate as usual throughout the end of the project, including 24-hour level-one trauma, stroke and burn care.

What’s being changed?

The emergency department — also generally called the emergency room — will undergo renovations in its waiting room and public spaces like bathrooms. The waiting room will be aesthetically upgraded to offer a more welcoming, modern and private feel, said Kara Anderson, public relations official for Swedish Medical Center. The project will include a new entrance with a glass canopy over the driveway outside the front doors to protect patients from the elements, a news release from Swedish Medical Center said. Additional lighting on and around the canopy will be installed to improve safety and visibility. The rooms where patients are treated will not undergo changes, Anderson said.

When will the construction end?

The renovations are expected to wrap up in January or February. The work began on Oct. 24.

That’s the approach that developers and contractors say should have been taken here, while the backers of the initiative said they took to the ballot because Denver has been intensely reluctant to impose mandates on developers. Mayor Michael Hancock came out against the measure, saying it went “too far.”

On Nov. 8, Hancock said the city would implement the will of the people, 52.5 percent of whom supported the measure in the previous day’s election.

“We are concerned that it may mean more initial costs,” he said. “Once the people have spoken, that’s our job.

There may need to be some tweaks, based on legal challenges. Though we were not going to line up and support the initiative, our values align.”

Not just a man’s job Female farmers hold important roles in ag industry

When Danell Kalcevic was in kindergarten, an assignment asked her to describe what she wanted to be when she grows up.

“It sounds silly,” Kalcevic, 48, said, but what she put on the assignment was a farmer’s wife.

Fast forward and Kalcevic is part-owner of Kalcevic Farms, which are located near Bennett and Lindon in eastern Colorado. Their primary crop is wheat, but they also farm corn, millet, sunflowers and cattle feed. The farm has been in Kalcevic’s husband’s family since it got its start near Denver in the 60th Avenue and Pecos Street area in 1898. It has been at the Bennett location since 1952.

“I love that it’s something we can do as a family,” Kalcevic said. “It takes a team to do what we do. In this country, it’s families that make up the farms.”

In April 2002, Kalcevic left her career as a project and product manager with Horizon Software to stay home with her two children. It was then that she slowly started picking up some tasks involving the operations of the farm. And now, she is an integral part of it.

Since the beginning of farming, women have been involved with the family farm behind the scenes — cooking, cleaning, bookkeeping, Kalcevic said.

“But because it’s always been men in the equipment and running the machinery, it’s been assumed that it’s men running the farm,” she added.

However, in today’s world, there are more women operating farms and pursuing high-end careers in the agriculture industry.

“The independent female can go out and start her own farm,” said Colleen Peppler, a retired educator who is a partner of Peppler Farms in Weld County.

“It doesn’t have to be a man.”

Leveling the playing field According to the latest Census of Agriculture — which is conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — 30 percent of the nation’s farmers were women in 2012, up from 27 percent a decade earlier.

These female farmers controlled 7 percent of the farmland in the U.S. The Census of Agriculture is conducted every five years, and the 2017 census will be done this winter.

In Colorado, the USDA states that women farmers make up 37 percent of the state’s producers. There are 21,443 women farmers in Colorado who farm

Peppler’s father was a wheat farmer in eastern Colorado, so she has been hands-on with farm operations since she was about 13, she said. In fact, she and her two sisters were her father’s “harvest crew,” Peppler said.

And Kalcevic’s two daughters, Tabor, 19, and Asia, 16, are also very much involved in their family farm’s operations.

“Often, when people think of a farmer, they think of a man,” Tabor Kalcevic said. But “when women step into these roles, they can really shine.”

Tabor is currently a sophomore at CSU in Fort Collins pursuing a bachelor’s degree with a double major in soil and crop science and agriculture business. She hopes to someday become the CEO of Kalcevic Farms.

“Women bring a different perspective to any industry,” Tabor Kalcevic said. Different, in a good way though, she added. “A strong work ethic is what gets you there.”

“We’re starting to see a very level playing field,” said Jennifer Tucker, the small acreage agent for CSU Extension in Adams County. “Ranchers and farmers within the agriculture industry don’t see it as a man’s industry.”

More than ranching, farming There is a lot of interest among young women wanting to enter a career in agriculture, said Brooke Fox, CEO of the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation, also known as CALF. Career fields pertaining to agriculture are just about endless, she said. Careers can be anything from veterinarians, livestock producers and crop scientists to lawyers, media relations, mechanics and those who develop the new technologies for modern-day equipment, said Fox, who grew up on a cattle ranch near Larkspur.

“It’s not just ranching and farming,” she said.

“No matter what your interests are, you can find a place in agriculture.”

CALF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people of all ages and abilities to agriculture through educational programs, community projects and special events.

Since 2009, CALF has served more than 19,000 children, Fox said, and annually, between 10 and 15 students in 4-H or members of Future Farmers of America raise livestock at the foundation’s working educational ranch, Lowell Ranch, in Castle Rock.

“Every person on the planet relies on agriculture in some form,” Fox said. “We need everyone to be thinking about our future and how to produce healthy, safe food.”

Both Danell Kalcevic and Peppler are volunteers with a group called CommonGround, which is a national grassroots movement designed to help bridge the gap between the women who grow food and the women who buy it.

For the most part, it is still primarily women who do the grocery shopping for most households in the U.S., Peppler said. Therefore, she added, women “are a keen ear of knowing what consumers want.”

CommonGround volunteers share their personal experiences, science and research to help consumers sort through the growing number of myths and misinformation surrounding food and farming.

“We’re the ones who start conversations in the grocery store,” Peppler said. “This is our career. And we take the responsibility of growing the nation’s food very seriously.”

A greater understanding Most people today are between four and five generations removed from agriculture, Fox said. She added that unlike in the past, it is uncommon for the majority of today’s children to have a grandparent who grew up on a farm.

Most of today’s society is far removed from producing its own food, Kalcevic said.

“The further removed we are, the more fearful we become” of the food we eat, Kalcevic said. “CommonGround helps consumers understand that farmers are regular people who are eating the same food that everybody else is serving their families.”

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what farmers and ranchers do, said Tucker, who lives on a small-acreage ranch near Bennett and raises sheep and horses.

But overall, man or woman, “everybody in the agriculture industry wants a safe food supply,” Tucker said.

Although production agriculturalists are a small percentage of the U.S. population, she said, no matter if you’re in Denver or New York, through social media, you can connect with someone who knows a rancher or farmer.

And most likely, they would be willing to bring you out to their ranch or farm to help you better understand the industry and where your food comes from, Tucker said.

“We’d love to show you what we do,” she said, “because we’re pretty proud of it.”

When making their bids, all bidders except the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling 10% of the Secretary’s bid in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made out to the Secretary of HUD. A deposit need not be accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of 10% of the Secretary’s bid must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. This amount, like the bid deposits, must be delivered in the form of a certified or cashier’s check. If the Secretary is the highest bidder, he need not pay the bid amount in cash. The successful bidder will pay all conveying fees, all real estate and other taxes that are due on or after the delivery date of the remainder of the payment and all other costs associated with the transfer of title. At the conclusion of the sale, the deposits of the unsuccessful bidders will be returned to them.

The Secretary may grant an extension of time within which to deliver the remainder of the payment. All extension will be for 15-day increments for a fee of $500.00, paid in advance. The extension fee shall be in the form of certified or cashier’s check made payable to the Secretary of HUD.
