For Beate Wake, 52, becoming a U.S. citizen means having a stronger voice.

“I don’t feel left out anymore, I feel like part of the group now,” said Wake, who is from Germany and has lived in the United States for 23 years.

The thing she looks forward to the most is voting — which she registered to do immediately following her naturalization ceremony.

Wake was one of 35 individuals from 21 countries who took the oath of allegiance and become a U.S. citizen Sept. 6 at a ceremony held at Four Mile Historic Park Grant Family Education Center at 715 S. Forest St. in Denver.

Individuals earning citizenship at this ceremony were originally from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Burma, Cameroon, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, India, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Sweden, United Kingdom, Venezuela and Vietnam.

“The sky is the limit here,” said Grace Setor, who originally moved to Denver from Ghana in the mid-’90s to attend Denver Seminary. Setor went back to Africa in 2000, but has called Colorado home again since 2008.

“It took several years, but by God’s grace I get my citizenship today,” she said. “I’m so happy and thankful to God for this opportunity to be American — education, freedom of worship… everything that comes with it.”

Michael Smith, of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said taking the oath of allegiance is an extraordinary thing.

Swallow Hill helps build community The nonprofit is celebrating 40 years in Denver

RENOVATIONS ON YALE AVENUE Swallow Hill Music’s CEO Paul Lhevine said the nonprofit will be launching a $3 million capitol campaign project to renovate the building at 71 E. Yale Ave. The renovations will begin in 2020 and will mainly focus on the lobby area at Swallow Hill and help to make the building more accessible Lhevine said.

For the last 40 years, Swallow Hill Music has been steadily growing its footprint in the Denver area.

What started as a small collective of musicians has grown to a school and concert programmer that reaches tens of thousands of people annually.

For concert-goers and volunteers like Christy Ramee, the nonprofit has become more than just a place where she can listen to local music. For her, its a community and a place where she’s met close friends.

When Ramee moved from Atlanta 25 years ago, she immediately began research to find Denver’s music community. In Atlanta, she and her husband had friends to go to concerts with, and enjoyed mingling with music lovers.

“When we moved here, I didn’t know anybody. I wanted to find the music community,” Ramee said. “It very quickly came to light that Swallow Hill was the place.”

Swallow Hill runs concerts in three venues in its own building, located at 71 E. Yale Ave. The building also houses its school and staff. In addition to the Yale building, the school has two smaller locations in Denver. Swal-

low Hill also runs concerts in venues across the city, and helps book musicians for other organization’s events.

Last year, 64,000 people attended concerts through Swallow Hill and there were 64,000 visits to the school, said CEO Paul Lhevine.

Little Swallows The nonprofit also offers outreach programming to low-income families and schools. Music education is a large part of what they do at Swallow Hill, Lhevine said. Swallow Hill also works in music therapy, particularly in memory care with adult Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.

Music helps to bridge the gap between the left and right side of the brain, Lhevine said. For young students, this can eventually help with math, behavior and language skills.

“Music as an educational component drives math and language and social positive emotional behaviors,”

Experts struggle to gauge potency of cannabis edibles

How much marijuana is really in that pot brownie? Chocolate can throw off potency tests so labels aren’t always accurate, and now scientists are trying to figure out why.

In states where marijuana is legal, pot comes in cookies, mints, gummies, protein bars — even pretzels. These commercial products are labeled with the amount of high-inducing THC. That helps medical marijuana patients get the desired dose and other consumers attune their buzz.

But something about chocolate, chemists say, seems to interfere with potency testing. A chocolate labeled as 10 milligrams of THC could have far more and send someone to the emergency room with hallucinations.

The latest research on chocolate, presented in a recent gathering in San Diego, is one example of chemistry’s growing role in the marijuana industry. Besides chocolate’s quirks, chemists are working on extending shelf life, mimicking marijuana’s earthy aroma and making products safer.

The marijuana business is at a crossroads in its push for legitimacy.

The federal government still considers marijuana illegal, yet more than 30 U.S. states allow it for at least medical use.

Even in those states, there are no recognized standard methods for testing products for safety and quality.

Chemists working for marijuana

companies and testing labs are developing those standards and some are legally protecting their ideas.

Scores of cannabis-related inventions have received U.S. patents, said Boston attorney Vincent Capuano, who holds a doctorate in organic chemistry.

Inventors have patented ways of putting cannabis into milk, coffee pods, ice pops and chewing gum.

“There’s a lot of flash and hipness, snake oil and marketing. But there’s still a lot of real chemical advance happening,” Capuano said of the industry.

Complicated blend Marijuana contains hundreds of chemicals, including cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, a trendy ingredient with unproven health claims.

Some pose challenges when they’re processed. Chocolate is a good example.

“The chocolate itself is affecting our ability to measure the cannabinoids within it,” said David Dawson, chemist and lead researcher at CW Analytical Laboratories in Oakland, California, which tests marijuana.

The more chocolate in the vial, the less accurate the test results, he found.

He thinks some of the THC is clinging to the fat in chocolate, effectively hiding from the test.

Dawson’s research was presented recently at the American Chemical Society meeting in San Diego. The conference included 20 presentations about marijuana’s technical challenges, said Markus Roggen, a Vancouver, British

Columbia-based chemist organizing the program. That’s a big change from a few years ago when presenters didn’t get much beyond the basics such as: “This is THC. This is CBD.” Some in the marijuana industry hold “a mythical belief in the goddess of cannabis,” Roggen said, but chemists view marijuana more objectively. For its part, the industry is learning to accept the “new guard of scientists with a different approach to the plant,” he said.

Another focus of research is a group of chemicals called terpenes that give the marijuana plant its pungent aroma.

Many terpenes get lost or changed in the process of making a THC or CBD extract. But users want a certain smell and taste, said chemist Jeffrey Raber.

Raber heads the Werc Shop, a Los Angeles company that mixes terpenes from lavender, oranges, black pepper and other plants to mimic the flavor and scent of cannabis varieties. The mashups are sold to companies who add them to oils, tinctures and foods.

Monica Vialpando, a San Francisco chemist, is working to prevent drinks with CBD and THC oils from separating into unappealing layers while sitting on the shelf. The oils don’t dissolve in water, a problem for companies trying to create new drinks.

Chemists solve the problem by increasing the surface area of the oil particles and adding ingredients, called surfactants and emulsifiers, to prevent separation. She said consumers should

be skeptical of outrageous claims for edibles and beverages, including that all the THC or CBD in a product will be absorbed. Some potency will always be lost in the digestive system before it hits the bloodstream, she said.

Lack of testing creates enigma But for now, exactly what happens in the human body with most of these products is unclear, Vialpando said, because there’s been very little safety testing of cannabis emulsions in animals, much less in humans.

In Ottawa, Ontario, a Canadian government lab is working on a sensor to help police identify stoned drivers. The goal is to detect cannabinoid molecules in saliva or breath droplets, using light and nanoparticles. Still years away from roadside use, the technology might someday also be used by marijuana growers to determine the peak time to harvest, said chemist Li-Lin Tay, who leads the work for National Research Council of Canada.

To do his work with chocolate, Dawson grinds a THC-infused chocolate bar in a commercial food processor, weighs samples, adds solvent to the material, before measuring the THC potency.

He’s tested cocoa powder, baking chocolate and white chocolate to try to determine what ingredients are hiding the THC during testing.

This will lead to better testing standards and safer products, he said.

“We need good ‘capital S’ science,” he said.

Poetry in a glass Longtime Baker resident, business owner believes in entrepreneurship

While sitting on the front patio at the Bardo Coffee House, drinking his coffee and enjoying a morning cigarette, it’s not unusual for several passersby to stop and say hi to Ron Tarver.

After moving to the Baker neighborhood in the 1970s, Tarver, 72, almost immediately began working at bettering the community. He’s been involved with the Broadway Merchants Association, neighborhood groups and the Metro Denver Local Development Corporation, a maintenance district which also works with the area.

Over the years, Tarver has helped write grants to plant trees and has done research in an effort to make the area a historic district. He also put together music fairs in the neighborhood. Through that work, he got to know the business owners and vendors in the area.

Adding the trees from Second Avenue to Bayaud Avenue on Broadway helped to make the area more walkable, which then brought more people out to the local businesses on

the street.

“I wanted the neighborhood to get better,” he said. “When you live in an area like Baker, having a viable commercial district is an amenity.”

Tarver, who owns several commercial properties on South Broadway, is also a business owner himself. After a tenant left the space at 244 S. Broadway, Tarver decided to open his own distillery there. After six years of work, the Denver Distillery in January 2018.

Since opening, Tarver and his team have blended award winning spirits and liquors. Tarver said that he believes that making whiskey is akin to writing poetry.

“Every word, every comma, every period has a meaning,” he said. “I want people to enjoy the flavor and complexity it takes to make.”

Tarver puts that same care into his other ventures like the properties he owns and his own artworks carving small sculptures.

Back when Tarver first moved to Baker, he worked at Denver Health, which was then called Denver General Hospital. He holds a master’s degree in hospital administration. At the time, he bought two properties and then flipped them. He began to continue doing that on the side, renting the properties out to local residents.

Through house flipping, Tarver learned more about repair and renovation. For his own house he added

The building he owns, which houses Denver Distillery and the neighboring Bardo Coffee, has six cast iron pillars on the front. Tarver stripped the paint and then polished the cast iron before hiring someone to gild the pillars.

Through owning business properties, Tarver has seen many different trends over the years. When his 33-year-old daughter Jennifer was

young, Tarver said he started to see more and more women-owned businesses.

Whenever he needed to talk to these tenants about something, he would bring his daughter along. “I wanted her to meet women in business,” he said.

His daughter later started her own midwifing business. Her husband is the general manager of the Denver Distillery. Local business, helps make a community thrive, Tarver said.

“It’s important to have entrepreneurs,” he said.

VOICES Farewell to laundromats is a wash come true

I

just washed a load of colors and had a particularly gruesome flashback to a time when I didn’t own a washing machine.

I didn’t own a washing machine until I was 33. I depended upon the ones in my apartment buildings or public laundromats.

Whenever launQUIET dromats are shown DESPERATION in films (“Shopgirl,” “The Blind Side,” “Sling Blade”) they are almost always sad-looking places with sad-looking people in them.

I went to Yelp to see if things have changed, at least in Denver, and the Top Craig Marshall Ten look nothing Smith like the ones I went to in West Los Angeles, that had a lost-and-found of 40 or 50 unmatched socks, a few peach-colored brassieres, and kitchen towels with

nefarious types. Los Angeles has a few. However, my relentless selfpreservation disallowed the possibility that I might meet someone who would become famous someday.

Here is an imagined conversation.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hello,” I said.

“I’m writing a song. I need a word that rhymes with `mire.’”

“Pyre?”

“Perfect. `And our love become a funeral pyre.’ Thanks, man.”

“Shouldn’t it be `becomes a funeral pyre’?”

“Uh, no, man.”

The lighting in the laundromats I went to was always very unflattering. Maybe that has changed too.

It made everything and everyone look worse. As if David Lynch was behind it.

My first apartment building, on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles, had two washing machines and two dryers. It was always a matter of luck whether they were in use or not.

Sometimes loads would be left in them long after clothes were washed or dried, and that led to: 1. apologies, or 2. disputes. Generally, disputes.

I bought my first washing machine when I bought my first house.

It was a major purchase. And I bought a matching dryer.

Everything changed. I was on my own. I could light my laundry area anyway I wanted to, and not wear pants if I wanted to.

It also meant I didn’t have to have a jar of quarters.

It meant something else too: I was, finally, an adult. Having a washer and a dryer of my own officially ended my youth.

My advice to anyone who wants to stay forever young: don’t invest in major appliances.

Winning happens when we choose to win

hen we are intentional about making our choices and deliberate when it comes to choosing our own path, we typically increase our chances of success. It’s when we allow others to make our choices for us, or when we allow circumstances or even prior habits to dictate our path, that we find ourselves living a life that is vastly different than the one WINNING we dreamed of or WORDS had envisioned for ourselves.

In last week’s column we talked about intentionally choosing the right words to think about and to share with others, good, powerful, hopefilled, and encourag- Michael Norton ing words. We also covered how we can choose what we allow to captivate our mind and eye, images and imagery that elevate our positive attitude and bring us joy.

The key here is that we choose what

In college, I did my laundry once every two weeks, and I always went at odd hours, to avoid people. However, it meant that others who did their laundry at odd hours to avoid people would be there too. We never spoke. Maybe we nodded to each other, and that was it.

I do not underestimate my washing machine. It is more dependable than I am. It has a lot of different settings on it, but I think it’s just an illusion, and every setting actually performs identically.

How does a box of water know if something is permanent press or not?

The answer is: It doesn’t, but it sounds reassuring.

When I went to laundromats, I had to sit there and wait. It was two hours of sitting there, and I usually took a book. The time wasn’t misused, but I would rather have been reading the book in my own home.

I was always on the lookout for

Our choice to create a winning life and a better experience is no different. We are the ones who get to ultimately choose what we act upon, what we respond to, and the direction we choose to pursue. It’s a choice, and if you are reading this column right now, you still have time to make new choices, choose to follow the rewarding path you may be currently on and enjoying, or choose a new and different way forward.

One of my favorite personal development books of all time came out earlier this year. It is titled “Choose to Win” by Tom Ziglar, the proud son of Zig Ziglar and the CEO of the Zig Ziglar Corporation. The subtitle contains the magic and power of the book, “Transform Your Life One Simple Step at a Time.” And within the book I found the strategies and tactics that allowed me to plan and prepare for the next steps and new journey I was about to embark upon.

Sounds kind of easy right? If it is, why aren’t we all already doing it?

It’s because we haven’t yet made the choice to intentionally choose to win. We may have made bad decisions in the past, we may have chosen poorly, but we can start turning that all around with the choices we make today and in all the tomorrows yet to come.

Starting with your “why” is step one. Why am I doing this? Why are we doing this? It’s no different with our decision to choose to win. And as you will read in Tom’s book, he points out that discovering our “why” is also a choice. We need to be proactive and understand what we want to be, do, and have in this life.

When we do, and when our “why” becomes clear, it will be much easier to make the right choices in each area that supports our goals and dreams. Replace bad habits with good habits, elegantly simple and yet powerfully productive when we choose to do it, when we choose to win.

Lhevine said. “You can’t think about half beats or full rests or threequarter time without thinking about math.”

For Lhevine, the potential to grow Swallow Hill’s outreach programming was what drew him to the job back in 2015. In addition to its paid school, Swallow Hill offers classes to K-12 schools and early childhood education with the Little Swallows program for locations that have at least 85% of their students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

When Lhevine started, outreach only represented about 1% to 2% of Swallow Hill’s programming. Now, that number is closer to 30%, he said.

This year Swallow Hill will be in 125 classrooms each week working with around 1,700 kids Lhevine said. Four years ago, it was only in one school and worked with 65 kids.

Lhevine said donors are excited about the program, which has helped Little Swallows expand into more schools. More schools are also seeing its success and asking for the program.

“There are so many early childhood education school and centers in our seven-county area that are in deep need and we are only skimming the surface,” he said. “Yes, we have been blessed with funding, and we can do so much more for so many kids that need it.”

Outreach programming got started in Denver schools. Swallow Hill is now expanding to Mapleton and Aurora.

Musical history Forty years ago, Swallow Hill got its start in a north Denver neighborhood of the same name. It was originally located on East 17th Avenue, across the street from where Steuben’s is now.

As the school grew, Swallow Hill moved to South Pearl Street. Then in 1998 it moved to the current location on Yale.

Swallow Hill also puts on around 250 concert events throughout the year.

Staff runs sound at events throughout Denver, such as the Oriental Theater, Four Mile Historic Park, the Denver Botanic Gardens and more.

“It’s everything literally from 75 seats to 5,000,” Lhevine said. “We’re pretty active all over the concert space.”

At first, Swallow Hill was a program run by the Denver Folklore Center,

which sells instruments. After buying an instrument, the store would sometimes be able to offer lessons for an individual. Those lessons turned into classes with multiple people and kept growing from there, Lhevine said.

“It literally kind of grew and blossomed,” he said. “From 2005 to 2015, in that decade we doubled the size of our music school.”

The school is now the second largest acoustic school in the country.

It’s never too late The acoustic music school, which is mainly housed at the Yale location, takes music even further. Tyler Bruer said that many of their students come in as older adults to learn to play an instrument for the first time. In fact, Lhevine said, 80% of the students are adults.

That was the case for Ramee. Around 10 years ago, she began taking music lessons for the first time. Ramee had inherited a ukulele from her in-laws, and she wanted to give it a try. With no prior musical experience, she jumped in to learn.

Now, she plays in a ukulele club

once a week, and said that some of her very best friends were people she met through the class.

Five years ago, when she won a guitar at a Swallow Hill concert, there was no question about where she would turn for lessons. Although this time, she had a little more confidence in her skills.

“They were very welcoming to students with no music background,” she said. “The teachers were able to get down to a real beginner lesson.”

For Bruer, this is the goal of the school. He wants people to realize that it’s not too late to pick up an instrument and learn. Bruer said he’s also hopeful that people will begin to feel empowered through their own creativity, even if it’s just for yourself.

“I describe (the school) as a place where people can come and get empowerment,” Bruer said. “At the core of it, our biggest deal is community. It’s mixing it up in a classroom that you don’t know the musician next to you, but after eight weeks of classes you’re going to be collaborators with that person. You’re going to be peers.”

Ramee agreed, saying that learning to play has made music a “much richer experience” for her. She now enjoys playing in group sessions at Swallow Hill.

For Lhevine, Swallow Hill means community — one where people can enjoy an experience that brings people together. “Music enriches our lives,” he added.

“From being the place where we go in the happiest of times, or that place where we go in sad times,” he said, “music rounds us out and does bring joy.”

TRAIL TROLL Open space officials, volunteers discuss outdoor etiquette amid increasing use

hen a bicyclist encounters a horseback rider on the trail, do they know what to do? When hikers walk their dogs through local open spaces, do they know the dos and don’ts of taking pets along for the adventure?

Denver metro area open space officials and volunteers who spoke to Colorado Community Media said the majority of people are considerate and follow trails rules. But they’ve also seen an influx of people hitting the trails as the Front Range’s population booms. That heightens the need for trail etiquette education, they said.

“You’ve got experienced people who don’t think twice about (etiquette) and your inexperienced people who just aren’t used to it yet,” said Open Space Specialist Hans Reichgelt with the City of Westminster.

In general, trail etiquette stipulates that cyclists yield to hikers and horseback riders, while hikers yield to horses. Yielding means moving off the trail until a user with the right-of-way has passed.

People should also stay to the right and keep pets on the right as well. Pass others on the left. People should announce themselves before passing. Clean up after pets.

Douglas County recently produced informational materials concerning trail etiquette in light of the county’s population growth and increase in trail use, said Assistant Director of Open Space Scott McEldowney.

“We anticipate roughly 600,000 users on open space this year,” McEldowney said. “I believe this year we will be about 5% over last year. The previous few years, we have seen a 15% to 20% increase.”

That’s a lot of people to fit in a relatively confined area, McEldowney said.

Total, the county manages 90 miles of open space trails and another 63 miles in Douglas County parks.

That’s not counting municipalities, state parks or federal forest land in the area.

In the north metro, Westminster offers 150 miles of trail surface, most of which is multimodal, Reichgelt said. People can walk, run, bike or ride horses.

In 2017, Westminster saw just shy of 550,000 trail users and nearly 554,000 in 2018.

Reichgelt said the city expects to surpass last year’s count “very soon for 2019.” He cautioned the city does not have counters on all trails, so the true numbers could be higher.

Open space officials aren’t the only ones advocating for responsible trail use and etiquette.

Throughout Jefferson County, the nonprofit Golden Giddyup Trail Team partners with Jefferson County Open Space to maintain trails. The organization began in 2013 after floods devastated the local

This summer, members surpassed 10,000 hours of volunteer work. Those hours have included pop-up events where they encourage people to follow open space rules and regulations.

“Working with open space and staff, we’ve specifically targeted mountain bikers at some of the most heavily used parks,” said Executive Director Jeff Watrobka.

The group is mostly comprised of mountain bikers. Watrobka himself averages 40 to 50 miles a week. He believes an important part of trail

etiquette is understanding a trail’s difficulty level before setting out.

Then, he said, check the weather. It’s important for trail users to pay attention to recent weather events. Different trails are comprised of different soil types, he said.

Some lend themselves well to biking or horseback riding when wet, but others do not. Those with heavy clay content can be damaged if used too soon after rain or snow, he said.

If he could grade Douglas County trail users, McEldowney said he’d give them a B-plus. There’s a low frequency of accidents, which can partially be attributed to how the system was planned, he said, but also to educated users.

When it comes to areas of improvement, Reichgelt, McEldowney and Watrobka all urged trails user to remain aware of their surroundings.

Ditch the headphones. Be on the lookout for wildlife, and other trail users. Lastly, leash the family dog, and keep it close.

When people make complaints, it’s frequently about unleashed dogs, McEldowney said. Similarly, Reichgelt said allowing dogs to extend their leash across the trail is a common mistake people make.

“That’s just a clothesline for anyone coming through on a bike,” he said.

Mostly, the men encouraged people to follow the golden rule and take care of the trail as though it were their home.

“Just be nice,” Reichgelt said. “Everyone is trying to do the same thing — just get out there and enjoy the outdoors.”

Denver Public Schools offers recycling, compost options in 170 locations The timing is good, given all the current news about environmental degradation.

“First and foremost, we’re teaching young students how to be responsible for their ways, and how to be stewards of the planet,” Paterson said.

“When a school adds composting in the cafeteria, we can see an increase in trash loads of 75%. All that food waste gets composted, lowering what goes into the landfill. And it helps make facilities managers’ jobs easier, as they’re not lifting heavy food bags anymore.”

Students have formed green team clubs at some schools, creating ways to improve the program, decrease contamination, teach others how to follow green practices and sometimes collecting recycled items from classrooms.

“You also see kids get really involved, get really excited about the programs,” said Paterson, who also

You can add recycling to reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic to the Denver Public Schools curriculum after students returned to classrooms following the summer break.

The trash, recycling and composting programs continue to grow in number at DPS, with more than 170 schools participating in the first two activities and 42 schools into composting.

The DPS Office of Sustainability started to pay for the addition of composting programs at schools last year, and several have added such programs this academic year.

“Before that, the compostable bag liners and hauling fee was kind of prohibitive for some schools’ budgets,” said Brad Paterson, a program administrator for Denver Recycles who also manages hauling contracts for DPS.

Paterson said the district is also encouraging students to take ownership of the progam, and engage with their fellow students. He’s also hopeful students will take what they learn to their homes.

Zack Thrower is a second-year social studies teacher at Compassion Road Academy, a DPS alternative high school with about 150 students in grades nine through 12 at 1000 Cherokee St. in the Golden Triangle.

He has resuscitated the academy’s recycling program, which previously proved unsuccessful. He faces ongoing challenges to involve more students, teach everyone to properly sort one’s recyclables and to place them in the correct bin.

“To me, it’s kind of criminal that we don’t educate the public on what is recyclable and not recyclable,” he said. He finds it’s a problem outside of school as well when he notices inappropriate items placed into recycling bins at an alley near his residence.

“This program opens your eyes,” Thrower said. “There’s ‘wish recycling,’ where people think things are recyclable that aren’t.”

For example, he found that students didn’t know that a standard plastic bag will jam the sorter that divides up recycled items.

Still, he finds that “people are pretty optimistic” about the program, wanting to believe “they’re throwing that plastic bottle or can in the recycling bin, and that it’s going to go on and live another life,” Thrower said.

“The alternative is to put everything in the trash. In 2019, I don’t think anybody feels good about that.”

Detainees’ art on display in gallery on Santa Fe Drive White teacups bear impressions of flowers from creators’ homelands

The first arts collective with work exhibited in the new exhibit, “Collectivism” at Center for Visual Art, Metropolitan State University’s gallery at Santa Fe Drive and 10th Avenue is the Detainees at Guatanamo Bay Detention Center, which sets a visitor on edge a bit — who knew? A note says that as of May 2018, 40 men remained there.

There are uniform white teacups decorated by prisoners with impressions of a flower of native origin in their country. Plus, we see photographs of those prisoners … Accompanying the white cups is a dazzling display of photographs of individual flowers, from their countries of origin.

There is also a stack of postcards with repeats of those prints, accompanied by pencils and an invitation to write to one of those men. (A glass container is quite full of written postcards, awaiting stamps and cancellations.)

One is immediately engaged in a way unlike what one generally feels upon entering a gallery. (Quiet anticipation …) Proceed a bit farther into a darkened room where sprouting bean plants are unfurling and an assortment of small salt dough sculptures represent the Shattered Moon Alliance. And, there is an invitation to “Join the CVA Artist Collective,” next to an assortment of colored papers, tapes, colored pencils — all bright, new and inviting one to make something now.
