As Amy Kenreich pulls up to the intersection at South Marion Parkway and East Dakota Avenue, she slows at the stop sign and reminds her two children to do the same.

“What do I always tell you?” she asks her son, Dylan.

“One foot on the ground,” he replies.

Kenreich is a community volunteer with the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee. The committee was formed as part of the Mobility Action Plan, which outlines various transportation and safety goals.

Vision Zero, the goal to have zero pedestrian traffic deaths by 2030, is part of the plan, which also aims to have 30% of commuters walking, biking or taking transit by 2030. In 2017, voters approved the Elevate Denver Bond fund that included $18 million for bike lane projects throughout Denver.

Lowering traffic deaths means the city also has been looking into ways to make bike lanes safer. Protected bike lanes give bicyclists more space. Drivers also tend to go more slowly around these types of lanes, according to a study by Fehr and Peers Transportation Consultants.

One of those projects is enhancing a current bike lane along a four-block stretch of South Marion Parkway.

City reduces size of developments that require review Five acres or three blocks will now count as large areas under zoning code

Large is half what it used to be in Denver.

The city council on July 8 voted 13-0 to change the zoning code, instituting regimes for reviewing large developments and creating infrastructure master plans for projects that are big or complex or both. They replace the General Development Plan process in use since the 1990s that required, for example, that 10 percent of the site be open space in development projects that covered 10 acres or more.

Now, the minimum 10 percent open space requirement kicks in at five acres.

It’s not just open space. All the standards and requirements under the new Large Development Review and Infrastructure Master Plan processes cover projects of at least five acres or three blocks.

Planners say the old process tended to be led by developers, often left communities feeling confused and ignored, and didn’t ensure coordination among such city agencies as

those overseeing housing, economic developments, parks, public works and planning. The change is supposed to fix all that.

Under the new process as under the old, public participation is necessary. Now City Council must adopt a preliminary plan for a large development, informed by community meetings, before work is finalized on, for example, rezoning. Issues such as the impact on new transit infrastructure or parks must be considered early.

General development plans “didn’t always happen before zoning,” Councilwoman Mary Beth Susman said during the discussion before the vote.

“This is a major change,” she added, saying communities would now have a better chance to understand the ramifications of a rezoning.

Joel Noble, chairman of the city’s Planning Board, urged the city council on July 8 to adopt what he called a “minimal, sane, inclusive approach.” David Smith, who has worked in development, also spoke in support of the proposed change.

“It’s well thought-out. It’s well-

defined,” Smith said.

A lawyer who represents property owners on land use and zoning issues, Jessica Alizadeh, was generally supportive but raised technical issues she urged council to address.

Councilwoman Robin Kniech, noting the impact large developments can have on communities, said the change would allow for more coordination on issues such as equity and avoiding displacement.

InterNeighborhood Cooperation, the coalition of representatives from Denver’s registered David Smith, neighborhood city councilman organizations known as INC, saw in the change a laudable effort “to ensure more robust planning prior to large developments moving forward.”

But INC added in letters to the city council that it was concerned neighborhood priorities would not weigh as heavily in the process as broader plans. INC objected in April when the council adopted Blueprint Denver, which sets out such citywide goals as more density, transitoriented development and affordable housing.

tains “hundreds of goals, policies and strategies, but … no details at the neighborhood level regarding future development.”

INC also is concerned developers still lead the process and that the changes do not create predictability for property owners or communities. Its other criticisms include concern that the new process does not do enough to ensure the right zoning is in place before infrastructure is planned, and that the city might end up scrimping on open space.

In a final letter to the city two weeks ago, INC said it wanted “a better system to be developed to increase open space in proportion to the increase in population that will depend on these open spaces.”

The change to how big projects are planned has been in the works for several years. In late 2014 and early 2015, a working group that included developers, designers, city staffers and community members held a series of meetings on large development planning. CHUN takes lead in neighborhood climate action A new subcommittee dedicated to climate change meets this month

Three members of Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods are looking for “movers and shakers” in the north Denver area, in the hopes of jumpstarting lasting change in climate policy. The Climate Crisis Committee will have its first meeting this month.

Jim Slotta said that the groundwork for a climate change committee has been around for a long time. On the events side, CHUN has done neighborhood clean-ups and tree plantings.

CHUN president Travis Leiker added that CHUN has also always had a mission to save and add to Denver’s tree canopy.

Slotta is also the CHUN representative at the Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation, an organization that represents residents citywide, and has its own sustainability committee.

Slotta has also worked with Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action, which held forums in Denver neighborhoods, including some in the CHUN area.

Slotta called Clark a “kindred spirit” because he has worked for sustainable

policies in the city already. The meeting is open to all.

Leiker and Stephen Polk, another CHUN member, expressed interest in partnering with other organizations to help get things rolling. Polk specifically wants to work with grassroots organizations run by people of color

to make sure the committee is inclusive.

“If we’re not fighting for the planet and also at the same time for all people, then we’re gonna fall short,” Polk said. “Those who are most vulnerable, and those who are going to experience the impacts of climate change most accutely are those people of color.

So if we don’t have them at the table, we’re not doing our job.”

Leiker said that cities are often the best incubators for new and innovative solutions. He’s hopeful the committee will create change on the city level that can then inspire similar programs in other cities.

“Certainly we are very blessed to be in a city and a state that values environmental conservation and sustainability,” Leiker said. “I think the potential for cities and local communities and neighborhoods to champion environmentally friendly clauses is both critical and ever-present.”

State getting $12 million to expand apprenticeships Federal money will be bolstered by providers to create positions in health-care industry STAFF REPORT

Colorado will receive $12 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to help provide 5,000 health-care apprenticeships in Colorado’s higher education system. The state has also secured $4.2 million in matching funds from health-care partners across the state.

According to a news release, Colorado’s program will seek to enroll at least 5,000 adults ages 18 and older in paid apprenticeships in growing occupations in health care that demand middle- to high-level skills. In this “earn while you learn” model, individuals will earn college credit, make a livable wage and gain work experience, reducing out-of-pocket costs for education and the time required to earn a credential.

Sector-Based Strategies grant program, the Colorado grant is among 23 private-public apprenticeship partnerships awarded nationwide in key industry sectors, including information technology, advanced manufacturing and health care.

Almost $184 million will support the training of more than 85,000 apprentices in new or expanded apprenticeship programs and increase apprenticeship opportunities for all Americans.

“As the job market continues growing and changing, we must ensure that our workforce is prepared,” Gov. Jared Polis said in the release. “This grant allows us to provide skills-based training for 5,000 Coloradans, while expanding access to critical jobs in the health-care industry that can help save people money on health care.”

The Colorado Department of Higher Education will receive the award in partnership with the Colorado Community College System with Kaiser Permanente, Centura Health, HealthOne/HCA, UCHealth and Colorado Rural Health Center.

The Colorado Department of Higher Education will also work with the Colorado Workforce Development Council, Colorado Department of

Labor and Employment and Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce to support apprentice and business recruitment and act as industry conveners.

“At CCCS we’ve made a pledge to Colorado to keep tuition low, quality high, and to deliver skilled workers to an ever-changing workforce,” Joe Garcia, chancellor of the Colorado Community College System, said in the release. “We are excited to partner with CDHE and several innovative health-care providers in pursuit of this grant to scale health-care apprenticeships throughout the state and across the nation.”

Health care is a major industry in Colorado, contributing to one in three job openings, according to a 2016 study. The industry is booming with 16,400 health and wellness companies, employing 329,000 workers. From 2012 to 2017, Denver added 43,250 health care jobs to its existing 222,700 workers, representing 10 percent of the total job growth in the region.

Coloradans employed in the most in-demand health-care occupations make anywhere from $30,000 to more than $100,00 per year.

Slotta agreed, saying that for people to make change, enough people must be interested in making that change happen.

“Unless it translates down to individual life changes, to culture changes, it isn’t going to work,” Slotta said. “I think that local activity is not a small part in what has to happen.”

The next step, Leiker said, is taking the interest of people and turning it into action, whether that’s calling city council members and asking for climate policy or using financial resources to help plant trees and hold events.

Leiker is hopeful the new committee will interest people in taking action at the city level. Some people don’t get involved in the process at all, while others take their concerns to state legislature or even the federal government.

But Leiker believes Denver residents and members of CHUN have an opportunity to create a domino effect on climate policy, starting with the neighborhoods and then growing citywide.

“I’m a firm believer in using the full ecosystem of organizations like Captiol Hill United Neighborhoods to advance policy objectives,” Leiker said. “I think that’s a space where CHUN can play a bigger role than it has historically.”

Outside, researchers tracked her brain’s reactions to the surprise sight of the drug she’d fought to kick.

Government scientists are starting to peek into the brains of people caught in the nation’s opioid epidemic, to see if medicines proven to treat addiction, like methadone, do more than ease the cravings and withdrawal. Do they also heal a brain damaged by addiction? And which one works best for which patient?

They’re fundamental questions considering that far too few of the 2 million opioid users who need antiaddiction medicine actually receive it.

How opioids change the brain When you sense something pleasurable — a special song, the touch of a loved one, a food like Volkow’s favorite chocolate — the brain releases a natural chemical called dopamine that essentially trains the body to remember, “I liked that, let’s do it again.”

That’s the brain’s reward system, and opioids can hijack it by triggering a surge of dopamine larger than nature ever could. Repeated opioid use overloads circuits in multiple brain regions, including those involved with learning and memory, emotion, judgment and self-control. At the same time, the brain gradually releases less dopamine in response to other things the person once found pleasurable. Eventually they seek more of the drug not to get high, but to avoid constantly feeling low.

Small business owners are being warned about potentially misleading notices requesting an extra fee for a third party to file business documents.

According to a news release, the Colorado Secretary of State’s office has received multiple reports of these potentially deceptive or misleading solicitations being sent to Colorado businesses. However, an online filing system for businesses is maintained by the Secretary of State’s office, and use of a third party to complete filings is not required, the release said.

According to the release, the misleading solicitation might: • Appear similar to a government form.

• Contain your business ID number and date of formation, as reflected in the Secretary of State’s business records.

• Include a customer ID number

that does not match a number given to you by a state or federal agency.

• Contain a warning to make sure that the form’s instructions are followed exactly when completing the form.

• Contain a due date for your response.

• Mention a periodic report.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office does not send these solicitations, according to the release, nor does it mail out business filing forms. Compliance with these notices is not required.

All business filings, including annual periodic reports, are filed online. The fee for filing the periodic report is $10. Business owners can find instructions to easily and directly file business forms on the Secretary of State’s website under the Business Organizations heading.

To receive advance notice of when Periodic Reports, Trademark renewals, or Trade Name renewals are due, business owners can sign up online for free email notifications. Additionally, business owners can visit www.sos.state.co.us to verify their business status, file a form or obtain a free certification.

Testing how addiction medicine helps Volkow aims to test 80 people, a mix of untreated heroin users and patients using different medication-based treatments, inside brain scanners at the National Institutes of Health’s research hospital. Her team is measuring differences in the brain’s ability to release dopamine as treatment progresses, and how the functioning of other neural networks changes in response as study participants do various tasks.

For example, does a patient’s brain remain fixated on “cues” related to drug use — like seeing a picture of heroin — or start reacting again to normal stimuli like the sight of a cupcake?

Another test: Ask if a patient would take an offer of $50 now, or $100 if they could wait a week, checking how much motivation and self-control they can muster.

“You need to be able to inhibit the urge to get something” to recover, Volkow noted. “We take for granted that people think about the future.

Not when you’re addicted.”

Like in any disease, each medication may work better in certain people — because not everyone’s brain circuitry reacts exactly the same way to opioid abuse — but that hasn’t been studied. Volkow suspects buprenorphine will improve

mood and emotional responses to addiction better than methadone, for instance, because of subtle differences in how each medicine works. She especially wants to test people who relapse, to try to spot any treatment differences.

Methadone and buprenorphine are weak opioids, the reason for the misperception that they substitute one addiction for another. In slightly different ways, they stimulate the dopamine system more mildly than other opioids, leveling out the jolts so there’s no high and less craving. People may use them for years.

Naltrexone, in contrast, blocks any opioid effects.

It’s a tough sell Volkow’s team has screened more than 400 people who expressed interest in the study, but have found only about three dozen potential candidates who qualify, seven of whom have enrolled so far.

The main problem: Study participants must have no other health problem that might affect the brain’s chemistry or functioning.

That rules out people who use medicines such as antidepressants, and those with a range of health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Volkow said it’s worth the struggle to find such rare volunteers if before-and-after scans wind up showing truly different looking brains as people get treated.

“You should be able to see it with your eyes, without having to be an expert,” she said.

VOICES Well, as it turns out, there is an ‘I’ in team

T

here’s only one of me (you’ll be happy to know), but from now on I want to be thought of as Team Craig.

Calling yourself or yourselves a team is the latest and the greatest, and I don’t want to be left out.

My dentist and her hygienists are a QUIET team.

DESPERATION My car is repaired by a team.

A team made my pizza last week, and a team will check my eyesight when I have my annual exam.

There’s a home improvements and Craig Marshall repairs outfit that calls itself a team.

Smith When a word becomes a movement, I want to ride it until I get saddle sores.

If I had to stretch things, I could say my echo and my shadow are

Team Craig teammates.

Maybe you remember the Ink Spots and their great song, “We Three.”

This (for once) is a true story.

When I gave my students a weekend ink drawing project, I told them to listen to the Ink Spots.

One kid thought I meant I wanted them to listen to the ink spots, and he was serious.

There are, in fact, teams. Every high school and college in the State of Colorado has a number of teams, and they compete against teams from other schools and states.

I have a harder time thinking of a guy wearing grease for an aftershave and leaning into the engine of my car to adjust the carburetor as a member of a team. But it sounds good.

I know some writers have ghost writers and editors and research people, but at Team Craig it’s really just Craig.

Unless you count Harry.

And why not? He inspires a num-

ber of columns each year, and he’s practically a dependent.

If you are a dog owner, you know what I mean. His veterinarian bills alone? Get out of here.

In her own way (discretion will limit details), Jennifer plays for Team Craig too.

But at the end of the day, the bottom line (to frolic in the gruel of two worn-out phrases) shows that Team Craig is comprised of one team member, who taps away with the heartfelt belief, “Everything we do is all about you.”

That’s the actual wording on a local team’s monthly newsletter.

And it brings with its treacle another word that is making the rounds.

“About.”

Check it out, brothers and sisters, and count the number of times in a day you read or hear that something is “about” something, as in it’s “all about you.”

It’s a word of equivocation be-

tween the point being made and the punch line.

“This column is all about the sarcasm.”

I could never write that sentence without the quotation marks.

Or this: “In our hotel, it’s all about clean sheets.”

For what it’s worth (Buffalo Springfield, 1967), I believe in getting it said, with honesty and decency.

But, you know, there’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear. But I will say this: It’s harder to take it out on a team than it is to take it out on one sarcastic journalist.

When the time comes and you want to lower the boom on me, you will just have to see if you can find someone at Team Craig who is willing to listen.

Making the most of those lazy days of summer

T

he other day I posted something on social media that included a brief reference to those lazy days of summer.

The post was really about something else, and a reminder that we should enjoy our lazy days of summer, take time for vacations, and relax when we WINNING can. However, we WORDS should also stay inspired and motivated and avoid the lazy days of summer hangover and doldrums.

You know that feeling, right? Those days where it might be beautiful and sunny and we wish Michael Norton we were hiking, biking, golfing, fishing, at the lake or at the beach. Our focus on work or other projects seems to drift into the distance as we daydream about being outside. Or maybe it’s those other days where it is so hot, so humid and sticky, and we just feel drained and

tired and we settle in to our air-conditioned homes, cars, or anywhere we can find relief from the heat.

Those are the days where our energy levels bottom out.

Mondays and Fridays seem to be the hardest days as we look to starting our weekend early or extending our weekend beyond Sunday. I have one friend, Chris, who likes to refer to his week as a “Thur-Mon,” as he starts on Thursday and goes through Monday. And there are others who save up their vacation time and PTO days and take these extended weekends during the summer instead of taking a full week or two here and there.

It’s the “getting back to work” part, or “getting back into the work mood and mode” that we struggle with, isn’t it? At least that was some of the feedback I have received after my post. It is almost like we need a vacation from our vacation, a vacation from our weekend, or we just need to find our summer motivation, energy, and inspiration.

ing solid goals, plans, dreams, and objectives come into play. When we know where it is we want to go, who and where we want to be, and what we want to have in life, we can usually fight through the lazy days of summer, or in my friend Chris’ case, the crazy days of summer. We allow ourselves the rest and relaxation we deserve, we enjoy those moments of daydreaming and easy peaceful feelings, but we remember our purpose and passion, and our “why” so that we maintain our momentum.

Tom Ziglar, in his book “Choose to Win,” talks about the importance of having a “why,” understanding our “why,” and having our internal compass aligned with our true north.

So, as we enjoy our summer, put our feet up a little bit, drift off for a few minutes, hours, or days, let’s keep our “why” in front of us, our plans and goals visible, and make sure we do not fall too far behind on where it is we really want to be.

Kenreich often commutes through the city on her bike, but said this particular lane is important to her because she lives five blocks away.

The lane will also help better connect the park bike trails to the trails along Cherry Creek.

To get more people on bikes means the city must focus on what Kenreich calls the “concerned, but interested” group. These are people who want to commute more on their bikes, but worry about riding in the street with traffic. Research from the National Research Center Survey of Residents about Active Transportation, shows that nearly 60% of people living in metro-Denver would ride bikes if they felt the roadways were safer.

“So many people around aren’t comfortable riding in traffic,” Kenreich said. “You have to make it convenient and safe for people to get from point A to point B.” Very few routes in Denver are connected to each other, making a map of bike lanes in the city look like “uncooked spaghetti,” she said.

Marion Street Parkway is divided down the middle by a grassy median.

On either side, the street is 27 feet wide, according to city records. Traffic flows one way on each side. Next to the traffic lane is a bike lane, and then there is a lane for parking, followed by the sidewalk and trail side of the street.

The city is proposing to enhance the bike lanes on Marion by providing a larger buffer between the lanes and traffic. Protected bike lanes create a physical buffer between the bike lanes and traffic. Planters, bollards or even a parking lane are just some of the methods cities can use to help create space between the two types of traffic.

Denver Public Works is in the design and public comment process for the Marion lanes. The department has created five options for protected lanes, including swapping the parking and bike lanes, adding three feet of buffer space between traffic and bike lanes, or moving the bike lanes to the left side of the street along the parkway.

Since the city is in the design phase, Public Works is taking comments from the public on the lanes.

Although a portion of the $18 million in bond funds will go toward the project, Heather Burke, a spokesperson with Public Works, said in an email the department won’t have a cost estimation until later in the process. The

BROADWAY UPDATE South Marion Parkway is not the only area in Denver up for a bike lane update. The city is also working on a detailed design of new bike lanes on South Broadway. The update will be presented in August, said Heather Burke, a spokesperson for Denver Public Works, and will “include conceptual elements shaped from people’s input that aim to move more people safely along the corridor and improve travel for those who walk, bike, drive and take transit.”

The lanes on Broadway now are protected lanes and were essentially a test run for the city, said Amy Kenreich, a volunteer with the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee.

Historic quality Residents have concerns about the plan.

Marion is not only registered as a historic parkway in the city of Denver, but nationally as well. Patsy Brown worried that some of the designs proposed by the city would damage the street’s historic quality.

The argument that bike lanes help slow traffic on streets doesn’t really apply to Marion, she said. Steele Elementary School is located on the street, and the speed limit is already lowered as part of a school zone.

existing bike lanes could be used as an example for safer lanes on other streets.

“That’s why it was designed, to preserve greenery and character, and all that good stuff,” she said. The mayor “should just use this as a template because it’s here and it works.”

Brown is not the only resident on Marion who is hesitant about the new bike lanes.

A large group of residents had questions during a Washington Park East Neighborhood Association meeting on June 11. Many brought forth concerns about construction on the lanes, as well as safety for pedestrians crossing the lanes and the potential loss of parking spots.

“Parking is critical,” Brown said.

A few people also voiced the pos-

sibility of converting a gravel trail on the west side of the street into a bike lane instead.

Outside of the meeting, Brown also said the street is very narrow. She feared that adding a buffer between the bike and traffic lanes would make it difficult for larger trucks to use the street. The neighboring Washington Park fire station, 1500 E. Virginia Ave., frequently uses South Marion to get to major streets like Alameda Avenue, she added.

Burke said the city is working on many of these concerns.

Public works has been in contact with the fire department to ensure its access to the street is not restricted.

The department is also working with Parks and Recreation to ensure designs for the lanes fall within the strict guidelines of the city’s designated parkways, she said.

As for the width of the street, Burke said fitting a protected lane into the street is not a problem as far as city guidelines go.

“The travel lane and parking lane dimensions are actually wider than our current standards, so there is enough space for a protected bike lane, a parking lane and travel lane,” she said.

Kenreich presented at the June 11 meeting and helped answer some residents questions. The dialogue between the community and advisory group has been positive overall, she said. Most people have safety as a goal, also a priority for the new bike lanes.

“It’s very easy to think what’s wrong with it and the way it is,” she said. “In the end, I think people will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.”

oloradans are known for their love of outdoor adventures.

Traditionally, these activities take place on solid ground.

However, the Denver metro area also offers plenty of high-adrenaline experiences that get participants off the ground and into the air.

Soaring above Golden Paragliding is kind of like sitting in a lawn chair in the sky, said David Hach, co-owner of Paraglide Tandem, a Golden-based company that serves Colorado residents and tourists.

“It really feels like we’re flying like a bird,” Hach said. “And the views are amazing.”

Paraglide Tandem started in 2013 and today, the Paraglide Tandem team is made up of eight instructors, all certified by the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association as tandem pilots.

The experience lasts about two hours, Hach said. The instructor will meet the client at about 10 a.m. — Paraglide Tandem flies in the morning when there’s no turbulence, Hach said — in the parking area at the base of Mount Zion, which is near the Chimney Gulch Trailhead off U.S. 6 in Golden. From the parking lot, the two take a five-to-10-minute walk to the launch site, which is near the Colorado School of Mines’ M on Mount Zion.

“Then we sit back, relax and watch the weather for a bit,” Hach said.

The instructor will then get the client geared up and they’ll do a practice launch. Then, the two step into the 42-square-meter glider — the guest in front and the pilot in the back.

“We wait for a nice gust of wind, and then we launch,” Hach said, adding there’s no free-fall involved. “We’ll soar around for as long as we can. And if they want, we’ll do tricks.”

Generally, a flight will last about five to 15 minutes, depending on conditions, Hach said.

“I love the reaction that everybody has,” he said. “They’re always surprised how smooth and mellow it is.”

Paragliding is a “risky sport,” Hach said, but Paraglide Tandem instructors are well-versed in the sport and they will only take people out “when conditions are perfect for a safe flight.”

Hach went paragliding for the first time on his fifth birthday in 1993.

“I’ve been hooked ever since,” he said. “It’s my passion and it’s fun to be able to share it with people.”

in Westminster is a safe way to challenge your physical abilities, while still getting that adrenaline rush.

“People enjoy the controlled environment,” said Allen Brown, the managing director of Adventure Golf & Raceway. The ropes course “gives them a way to get that rush without the potential to get hurt.”

The Adventure Ropes Course is a two-level course that offers 25 different challenges with varying degrees of difficulty. Perched above a giant maze made of constructed walls, the first level of the ropes course is about 10 or 12 feet off the ground, Brown said, and the second level is about 20 feet off the ground. Challenges range from walking across tires to navigating a slackline. People are harnessed in, and once on the course, they choose their own path, Brown said.

“People tend to be really nervous when they first try it,” Brown said.

“But then, we see that they gain confidence and start to enjoy the interaction with the device. And then there’s some people who don’t want to come down.”

It takes about 30 minutes for a person doing it for the first time to complete the beginner challenges, Brown said.

The ropes course was originally at the former Heritage Square site — a tourist attraction near Golden that has since closed — and was installed at Adventure Golf & Raceway in 2016.

All sorts of people have enjoyed it since then, Brown said, including individuals who want to challenge themselves, families who want bonding time and groups for team building.

“The ropes course (and its challenges) pushes people to do things they’re not comfortable with at first,” Brown said. But in the end, “they enjoy trying something they haven’t done before.”

Go on an adventure Located within Philip S. Miller Park, Castle Rock Adventure Park offers three main activities — a zipline tour, the Epic Adventure Tower and the Sky Trek.

Each has a different draw, said Adam White, general manager of Castle Rock Adventure Park, but all of them will get your heart pumping.

“They’re different than anything else you can find,” White said. “And you get great views, with essentially no obstructions because you’re so high up.”

Among other features, it includes a 42-foot climbing wall, four rappelling stations and three different platforms, including the 75-foot Eagles Nest, which offers a harnessed freefall.

The Castle Rock Adventure Park opened in 2015 with the zipline tour.

The zipline tour provides an adrenaline experience that’s not too overwhelming, White said, but “it’s still a lot of fun flying through the air.”

The zipline tour takes about two to three hours to complete. There’s about a mile of hiking, which is split up among the 10 ziplines. Along the route, each line gets longer and faster.

People take the tour in small groups accompanied by a guide certified by the Association for Challenge Course Technology.

People enjoy different kinds of outdoor adventures that gives them a break from their normal, daily routines, White said.

“Most people’s day-in-and-day-out lives are spent on the ground,” he said.

“Getting off the ground is inherently different. And you get to experience the season and the views — the best that nature can offer.”

This sport is the real dill Pickleball offers more than recreation, socialization

“There are some who show up to really play the game,” Pinkel said.

“Some people are here to say ‘hi’ and if they play a game and lose, no big deal. The sport is getting more competitive and we do have much younger people coming in that can just beat the pants off me.”

The sport with a curious name has exploded in popularity. In addition to be considered a fun, recreational game, pickleball has grown into a seriously competitive outlet for many.

Today, the sport even has professional players.

“No question, there is competition — and at all ages,” said Don Siegel, director for two tournaments at the Apex Center in Arvada.

There has been a 650% increase in players over the past six years, according to the USA Pickleball Association.

There were 3.1 million players in 2018, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association.

Numerous tournaments are scheduled in Colorado this summer, including competitions in Englewood and Arvada.

Pickleball is particularly popular among seniors. The Sports and Fitness Industry Association reports that 43% of players are 65 years old or older.

The sport includes elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

It’s played with paddles and a plastic ball with holes in it on a 20-foot by 44-foot badminton-size court. It can be played indoors or outdoors, doubles or singles.

Siegel believes pickleball gives former athletes another chance to compete later in life, but it is also drawing interest from younger generations.

“Commonly, people looked at it as a senior sport, but you are seeing some of the younger tennis players come

Donnie Gallegos and his wife Patty are mixed-doubles players who compete in many of the local and regional pickleball tournaments. Donnie said pickleball can be competitive. “You have beginners and then you get super-serious and supercompetitive players like any other sport,” he said.

It’s like any sport, it can be played aggressively, and very competitively … We’ve got some really competitive 70 (year-old) plus players and others that are here to have a good time, smile and laugh. That’s one of the many beauties of the sport.”

Ryan Daberkow, an athletics coordinator for South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, said he wouldn’t necessarily label the sport as becoming more competitive.

“It’s just a growing sport in general,” said Daberkow. “People from all age groups are taking an interest in the sport. You get a mixture of skill levels.”

But Drew Wathey of the USA Pickleball Association says the competitive level has increased.

“As the popularity has increased, it attracts ex-tennis players,” said Wathey, who estimates there are now in the neighborhood of 125 professional players.

“The pro division is swelling. Prize money is increasing. Winners can win as much as $2,500 to $3,000. It reminds me of the old Virginia Slims tennis circuit, where they would play for peanuts. We are seeing 10- and 12-year-old kids in some of our tournaments and players in their 80s.”

Colorado has its share of elite pickleball players.

Julie Quisenberry, 76, says the older generation enjoys the competition as much as younger players.

“It can get competitive,” said Quisenberry, who recently was playing at the Goodson Recreation Center in Centennial. “We like to keep score.

We sort it out among ourselves. There are all kinds of players. One night I played against a 23-year-old kid.

“I like the socializing. You meet new people. I started playing five years ago for exercise but it was so much fun. I was teaching as a substitute but I quit to play pickleball.”

Nuggets acquire forward from Thunder for draft pick Jerami Grant expected to cover multiple roles on court for Denver

Jerami Grant gives Denver another power forward who can do a little bit of everything.

The Oklahoma City Thunder obtained yet another first-round pick, which allows them to do a little bit of anything.

The Nuggets bolstered their front court by acquiring the 25-year-old Grant from the Thunder on July 8 for a 2020 first-round pick. ESPN first reported the deal.

It’s an additional first-round selection for the Thunder, who are in line for at least four more assuming the blockbuster deal that sends Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers goes through. It would also give Oklahoma City the rights to as many as 13 first-round picks over the next seven drafts.

The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Grant is coming off a breakout season

that saw him set career highs in points (13.6) and rebounds (5.2).

He shot 49.7% from the field and 39.2% from 3-point range. On the defensive end, he displayed his versatility by blocking 100 shots and recording 61 steals.

Originally a second-round pick

by Philadelphia in 2014, Grant — the son of longtime NBA player Harvey Grant — has taken off since being sent to the Thunder in a 2016 deal.

“I think it’s one of the best things that could have happened to my career, just getting traded here from Philly. Just the opportunity here,” he said at his exit interview in April. “It was an opportunity in Philly as well, but the opportunity here to play on a great team, play in a great organization like this, it was — I think it was huge for me and my career, just in my development. I’ve gotten so much better since I got here.”

“J.G. is one of those special players I think that you need on a team to make a team special,” George said before last season. “Every team needs that one guy that can do a little bit of everything, and J.G. is that guy. You can plug J.G. in at any spot, and he’s going to come out with some special plays for us.”

The Nuggets are coming off a 54-28 season that earned them the No. 2 seed in the West behind AllStar big man Nikola Jokic. They haven’t made any major splashes this offseason.

Instead, they’re relying on team cohesion. That’s why they brought back forward Paul Millsap, who recently had his $30 million option picked up. The team also agreed to a reported $170 million extension for point guard Jamal Murray.

Denver boasts a young nucleus that includes Michael Porter Jr., the No. 14 selection in 2018 who sat out last season as he recovered from another back surgery. Porter was set to suit up during the Summer League in Las Vegas before suffering a knee injury that is not considered serious.

THE NAME OF THE GAME Three men — Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — are credited with inventing pickleball on Bainbridge Island, Washington, near Seattle, in 1965, according to the USA Pickleball Association.

The men were looking for a way to help their families combat boredom, and they developed a game on a badminton court, using table tennis paddles and a plastic ball.

One possible reason it became known as pickleball was because the Pritchards had a dog named Pickles that liked to chase the ball used in the new game, according to the association.

Another theory: “According to Joel Pritchard’s wife (Joan), she started calling the game pickleball because ‘the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats,’” the association’s website states.
