Local man doles out spicy and sweet treats BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

On afternoons in the Westwood neighborhood, you might see a man wearing a woven straw hat pushing a white cart full of snacks around West Alameda Avenue. His name is José Nuñez, and he’s a 69-year-old local who said he works for RML Cleaning, a company that sits in that same neighborhood. When he’s not working, he sells snacks to residents in the area. “(I have) not much money, food,” said Nuñez, a Spanishspeaker who speaks a bit of English.

He does it about three days per week. “Not strong,” he says, smiling and pointing to his knees. His two sons also sell snacks out of carts, he said. Nuñez has done it for seven years, and he’s worked in the area for 30 years, he said. On June 27 in the afternoon, he sold a snack with chili sauce on it to one family with a small child who stopped at a corner. He also gave them corn on a stick, which he took out of a cooler and dressed up in butter and spice. Shaved ice, with three different flavors, stood out on the cart, as well as Pixy Stix and styrofoam cups for drinks.
