Wild at heart: 100 ideas for kids to do outside

In an age when tablets, video games and fidget spinners consume the minds and habits of children nationwide, some experts are concerned children are spending too little time outdoors. And they warn of health and emotional problems when children aren’t given the opportunity to go outside for free, unstructured play.

“Many kids today are overscheduled, overscreened and overprotected,” said Chris Castilian, executive director of Great Outdoors Colorado. “I see it all the time with my friends who have kids. They go to school, to their homework, to soccer practice, to bed and then back to school the next day.”

To break that cycle, Great Outdoors, a subsidiary of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, recently launched “Generation Wild,” a four-year, $4.3 million campaign to inspire children to put down their devices and calendars and simply go outside to play.

The first tool employed by the initiative is a list, “100 things to do before you’re 12,” featuring low-cost, curiosity-inspiring activities children can do in the woods, at a playground, or in their own backyards.

“These aren’t things you’d have to spend $1,000 doing,” Castilian said. “It could be something as simple as opening the door, pushing the kids outside and blowing the seeds off a dandelion.”

Copies of the list will be available at nine state parks, recreation centers in the Denver Parks and Recreation network, libraries across the state and distributed by 40 chapters of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Colorado. It can also be downloaded from the campaign’s website: GenerationWild.com.

Researchers are tracking the initiative’s progress using a focus group of 479 mothers. In the fall and subsequently throughout the next two years, the researchers will gather data and monitor changes in the children’s health and behavior.

Save for a house like you save for college Coffman helps introduce homebuyer savings account plan

Ever heard of a 529 plan?

It’s basically a savings plan for college that provides some tax advantages. Rep.

Mike Coffman wants to bring the same idea to saving for a house.

Together with Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-New York) and Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Virginia), the Aurora Republican reintroduced the idea via the First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account Act. The pitch is pretty straightforward — houses are expensive, and you need all the help

you can get to save up for one.

“The American dream of homeownership is getting harder and harder to attain for those starting out on their own these days, especially Millennials, because of the challenges involved in saving up for the down payment,” Coffman said in a release.

Here’s how it would work, per Coffman’s office: “Individuals can put up to $14,000 per year into a

first-time homebuyer account with a lifetime investment amount of $50,000.”

The investment can then grow tax-free up to $150,000 until it needs to be taken out for a down payment on a first home.

“The designee of the account can be the account holder, a child, a grandchild, a spouse, etc. and can be modified during the life of the account.”

“The account may be used for a down payment on a firsthome and associated closing costs and fees.”

The proposal, House Resolution 2802, has been referred to House Committee on Ways and Means.

Incubator cooks up businesses for 13 years Morrison Road commissary kitchen starts up more than 150 food businesses a year

A deceptively unassuming building sits tucked just off Morrison Road and Sheridan Boulevard, and if you don’t walk right up to it, you might miss it.

In a lot with a sign that reads, “Morrison Road Complex,” the Kitchen Network is busy churning out foods, sauces and more importantly, hundreds of businesses.

One of them is Melissa Coel’s Everyday Gourmet catering company, which works in the Denver area.

“I was looking for a shared kitchen and Googled around, checked out a few and liked this best,” said Coel, chef and owner of the company. She has used the kitchen for about six to eight months. “For this one, there are no set hours you have to work, and for me, as a caterer, that stands out.”

Started 13 years ago by Dennis McFerrin, the Kitchen Network building houses 12,000 square feet and 11 kitchens catering to small and large businesses of all kinds — vendors, caterers, personal chefs, food manufacturers, bakers and beyond.

Nine private kitchens are leased out annually, and the building boasts a 2,500-square-foot shared commissary kitchen that’s open 24/7. A bottling facility also operates out of one other kitchen.

“We are, in essence, an incubator that starts people up,” said McFerrin, 71, who got into the food business after working in the dental laboratory field for 40 years. “Some companies stay, some companies build (on their own), and some move on in other ways. It’s a positive environment where people can come in, get legal and grow. It becomes an excellent starting point.”

The key piece to helping food-related businesses get started is giving them a certified kitchen to work out of. That provides them with the affidavit of commissary needed to obtain a license from the city to sell food, McFerrin said.

About 175 businesses per year on average run through the incubator, said McFerrin, who says Kitchen Network is the state’s largest food-related incubator. About one-third of the businesses are seasonal companies that return each year.

A walk through the shared kitchen reveals a bustling scene, where anywhere from zero to four companies at once are often grinding away.

Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill worked there for two years and made “1,000 pounds of hummus a day,” McFerrin said. Bravo Burritos has been in the kitchens for 13 years. And the La Villa Real food truck company has worked out of them for 15 years — in May it opened Villagran Mexican Restaurant minutes away on West

“Everyone’s super friendly and super helpful,” Coel said. “It’s been a great experience (working with McFerrin).”

And then there’s the Kitchen Network Bottling Company, a U.S. Department of Agriculture-certified business that produces more than 100 products for King Soopers, Safeway, Whole Foods Market and Tony’s Market, according to McFerrin.

Kitchen Network is in the process of trying to become a nonprofit with the help of BuCu West Development Association, said José Esparza, executive director of the association, also located on Morrison Road a few blocks away. That will allow it to grow more efficiently, McFerrin said. Esparza said the company is the longest-running kitchen comissary in the state.

McFerrin, who lives in Lakewood, purchased the Kitchen Network facility in 2004 to house a catering company he had at the time. He decided to drop the business in favor of growing the commissary and hasn’t looked back.

Kitchen Network is “a positive force” for the Denver community, he said. “It provides employment for the local community and it provides a good tax base for the city.”

Asked which businesses are his favorites, McFerrin said he couldn’t choose.

“It becomes a family here,” he said.

“They work here, and we get to know them. It’s like saying who’s your favorite child.”

A change in venue: John Fielder’s gallery closing Longtime photography gallery on Santa Fe will host weddings instead

The sizable gallery where John Fielder and a dozen other photographers display their work on Santa Fe Drive will close by Aug. 1.

John Fielder’s Colorado has occupied the 6,250-square-foot building at 833 Santa Fe Drive since 2006. He also leases out space in the building to a dozen other photographers, and the gallery’s a popular spot on First Fridays.

“At this stage in my life, going to the city is less and less convenient — so that’s the personal side of it,” said Fielder, who lives in Summit County and is known for large, sweeping prints of Colorado’s landscapes.

Fielder bought the place in 2010 for $750,000, according to Denver property records.

“The business side is that, as you may know, rents are going up a lot in many of these restored neighborhoods in Denver. Especially with the art districts, I know there’s pressure on art galleries who do pay rent,” he said.

“Even though I don’t pay rent because I own the building, this affects me too, in the sense that I can actually make

more money from leasing to a tenant than the gallery business,” he said.

He’s about to sign a lease with an events company out of California, which plans to knock down interior walls and turn the former auto shop into a reception hall.

“They’ll mostly do weddings in what they see as an interesting historical area with some character to it,” Fielder said. The place was built in the 1920s, he said.

He’ll continue his photography work — now 67, he just finished a nine-day trip down the Delores River — but he’ll do most of his business through JohnFielder.comnow. He expects he might reopen a physical gallery in Cherry Creek North one day.

In the meantime, about 150 photographs are on sale at the gallery for a 40 percent discount. The loss of the space will be a loss for the arts community, according to Tony Eitzel, a framer and photographer who has long worked in the building.

“It’s allowed so many people to see what it’s like to be in a big gallery … also, to succeed. That’s a huge thing that’s going to be missing for photographers,” he said. “That’s the sad part, but you know, things end.”

Program helps feed kids this summer Nonprofit’s new van will deliver food with help from Whole Foods Market

Five years ago, Andrea Fuller sat on her kitchen floor, stared at her pantry and started bawling.

A mother of two, her income put her just above the limit for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — once called food stamps — and she was skipping meals to try to feed her kids.

“At that point, I was working at any part-time jobs I could get,” Fuller said. “I’d look at my children and look at (my) stack of job applications ... I’d be working all day, and all I could think about was food.”

The nonprofit Hunger Free Colorado turned things around for the Denver resident after other doors closed in her face, referring her to assistance programs that helped put food on the table.

Today, she’s feeling secure about the food needs in her family.

“Hunger Free Colorado gave me an accurate list of what food banks I was eligible for and when I could go,” Fuller said. “It zoomed in on that target, and I knew exactly where to go.”

New food-assistance van expands service Hunger Free Colorado connects families and individuals to food pantries, SNAP assistance and summer meals programs for school-age children. On June 12 at the Whole Foods Rocky Mountain regional office in Denver, it unveiled a new food-assistance van that will expand its mobile reach throughout Colorado this summer. Currently, the program gives in-person information to low-income Denver metro areas and offers bilingual help locating public and private food assistance throughout Colorado via its statewide hotline.

The timing of the van launch is aimed at connecting school-age children with meals during the summer, when daily school meals are sometimes not an option. Hundreds of community sites across Colorado offer free meals to children and teenagers during summer, Hunger Free Colorado said in a news release. That includes many schools.

Decked out in Hunger Free’s yellow and green colors, the van is designed to be easy to spot and comfortable for residents to sit in while filling out SNAP applications and receiving food assistance information and on-the-spot food donated by Whole Food. Providing food for people until they can access food pantries or food stamp benefits is part of the new mobile service.

The schedule, which will be yearround, is still being worked out, said Erich Kirshner, a spokesperson for the group.

The organization previously used the 40-foot Hunger Free RV, which led the mobile outreach from 2013-15.

Hunger Free, which started in 2009, continued to offer on-site assistance throughout the metro area, but never had a vehicle that could affordably go outside Denver before the new van, Kirshner said. The RV also did not offer on-the-spot food.

The nonprofit was able to buy the van thanks to a more than $64,000 donation by 20 Colorado Whole Foods stores, which gave 5 percent of net sales from its Oct. 24 Community Giving Day to the group. That donation also bought food for the van from Whole Foods at a discounted price, Kirshner said.

Most frequent service site is in southwest Denver From 2012-14, an average of 19 percent of Colorado children lived in households that were food-insecure at some point in the past year, according to the most recent numbers from the nonprofit group Colorado Children’s Campaign.

The 80219 zip code in southwest Denver is one of the lowest-income areas that Hunger Free Colorado

serves in the metro area, said Ninfa Drago, lead staff member for mobile outreach and driver of the new van.

“Eighty percent of our clients (are patients) from Denver Health (campuses),” Drago said about the mobile outreach.

The area is bounded roughly by Sheridan Boulevard on the east to just west of Federal Boulevard, and West Yale Avenue and Sixth Avenue.

Denver Health’s Federico F. Peña Southwest Family Health Center, which sits in the middle of the area, is the most frequent service site for Hunger Free Colorado currently, Drago said. For the last five months, the organization has offered services there nearly every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“In the clinic’s vicinity, there is a higher number of residents that are eligible (for), but not enrolled in SNAP,” spokseperson Ellie Agar said.

Drago said the other four lowestincome areas served include 80204, a neighborhood west of downtown Denver; 80239, which encompasses Montbello; 80216, areas north and

The main Denver Health campus, which is in the 80204 neighborhood, brings many homeless clients, Drago said, and most clients are low-income.

“They could stand in line for three hours at the county buildings, or be here for about 20 minutes,” she said about those seeking basic need services.

As the group’s mobile program driver, Drago also said the group drives to churches, community events and public schools.

At the van’s unveiling, Fuller, now a photographer for a Hunger Free Colorado advocacy project called Hunger Through My Lens, recounted her story and how she felt “despair” going hungry.

“The van and program is so no one has to feel like that,” she said. “It’s a physical manifestation of the efforts we’re trying to accomplish.”

Before Denver’s street art program, before even Denver’s art districts, there was the unsanctioned public expression known as graffiti.

Of course, plenty of graffiti goes unreported, Denver Police Department Graffiti Unit Detective George Gray notes. Though DPW removes graffiti, the police catalog it to keep track of gang rivalry, taggers, hate speech, eulogies (RIP

messages), declarations of love and threats.

Graffiti is also a costly form of expression, at least for the city of Denver. Last year, the city allocated roughly $1.2 million removing graffiti. So which areas are most impacted?

According to data from Denver Public Works, Five Points had the most square footage of reported graffiti in 2016. Capitol Hill was about 4,000 square feet behind that.

Then behind the neighborhoods, you have the people. Westwood resident Michelle Schoen carries paint in her car to cover tags, plus she says that she reported lots of graffiti in Westwood.

“We found that people in a community with high tagging are fearful.

They don’t come out of their houses as often. When they do, they’re looking over their shoulder,” she said.

“So the idea is that you take it down so you don’t have as many neighbors that are fearful.”

All told, DPW removed an estimated 2.1 million square feet of graffiti in 2016. That’s quite an improvement from 2013 when the square footage removed was almost twice as big.

Annual food rescue bike ride fights hunger and food waste Leisurely ride in Cherry Creek State Park raises money for local program

Combine bicycles, healthy food advocates and a passion for health equity and you get the third annual Food Rescue Ride — the Aug. 19 noncompetitive bicycle event in Cherry Creek State Park.

The fundraiser supports Denver Food Rescue, a nonprofit that collects whole fresh produce from local grocery stores and retailers and redistributes it to low-income communities

via bicycle.

Friends, families and community members can sign up for the ride as individuals or teams and can choose to ride either 15 or 30 miles. For an extra challenge, bring a bike trailer and complete the ride towing 100 pounds of gardening supplies — all of which will be donated to local school gardens.

All proceeds support the nonprofit’s operational budget, which funds the nonprofit’s No Cost Grocery Programs, said Amy Moore-Shipley, development and marketing coordinator for Denver Food Rescue.

In addition to alleviating food deserts in underserved communities, the grocery programs reflect the unique needs and desires of each neighborhood by appointing community mem-

bers to direct their own programs.

When possible, programs are paired with relevant cooking and nutrition classes that help communities become more self-sufficient and healthy.

Visit foodrescueride.org to sign up and register or attend an event from 6-8 p.m. June 29 at Ratio Beerworks, 2920 Larimer St. in Denver, to have the $30 sign-up fee waived. Another opportunity to earn free registration takes place July 13 at evo, a Denver recreation gear and apparel shop at 860 Broadway.

Whether on a team or riding solo, all individuals are expected to raise a minimum of $200.

“Denver Food Rescue is a very lean and efficient organization,” executive director Turner Wyatt said. “For every dollar contributed to Food

Rescue Ride, DFR provides more than $4 worth of healthy groceries to a lowincome family.”

In 2016, the ride attracted about 100 people and raised $27,000. This year, Denver Food Rescue hopes to double its 2016 rider count and hit a fundraising goal of $40,000. Part of this target, Moore-Shipley said, is to engage a fresh crop of participants who are new to the organization’s mission.

Participants who don’t own a bike can rent one on site for under $20.

“We know there are many ride options in and around Denver,” MooreShipley said, “but we hope to use this time to build community and give people a chance to fundraise and advocate for a cause they really believe in.”

‘I just knew I needed help,’ new mom says

he week following Amanda Hawthorne’s first pregnancy was good. But the day her mother, who had been helping, returned to work, Hawthorne’s emotional state quickly declined.

She slept because she was so exhausted. She paced back and forth because of anxiety. She felt depressed and manic all at once, she remembers, and had little interest in her daughter.

So she hired a babysitter and confided in her family. And then she went to see a psychiatrist.

“I had to hand my child over because I couldn’t take care of either one of us,” said Hawthorne, 34, a Wheat Ridge resident who has a history of bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. “I didn’t know what do — I just knew I needed help.”

A support system comprised of family and friends helped most, she said. Creating such support systems is the goal of a campaign run by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in partnership with Postpartum Support International, an organization that increases awareness about the emotional changes that women experience during pregnancy and postpartum.

The educational campaign, launched last October, brings awareness to symptoms of pregnancyrelated depression and anxiety —which occur in one in seven new mothers during or after giving birth — and provides resources for help.

Though pregnancy-related depression and anxiety cannot be fixed overnight, the department of public health says it can be treated through self-care, support groups, therapy or counseling and medication when necessary.

‘No one reason’ exists Postpartum depression and anxiety are not the same as “baby blues,” which are mild feelings of sadness, worry and fatigue that may accompany new mothers in the week or two after pregnancy and typically resolve on their own.

Symptoms of pregnancy-related depression and anxiety can appear anytime during pregnancy or in the year following birth and may include feelings of anger or irritability, lack of interest in the baby, loss of appetite and trouble sleeping, feelings of guilt or hopelessness, loss of interest or joy and possible thoughts of harming the baby or oneself.

Some mothers find it difficult to address these feelings and instead hide them, said Mandy Bakulski, maternal wellness and early childhood supervisor of the department of public health. In today’s fasterpaced society, there is an expectation that women should return to leading the lives they did pre-pregnancy, said Bakulski, adding that it’s hard to ask for help.

that having a baby should be one of the happiest times of a woman’s life,” she said. “The reality is there is an entirely new human being in their life that takes time and caring.”

There is no one reason for pregnancy-related depression and anxiety, according to the department of public health. Symptoms are caused by a combination of psychological, social and biological stressors.

People with a personal or family history of mood or anxiety disorders and sensitivity to hormonal changes are more likely to be at risk.

That was the case for Hawthorne, who said she was informed by her midwife that because of her history of mental illness, she had a higher chance of having postpartum depression.

Bakulski recommends medical providers use the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, a 10-item

New moms ‘are not alone’ It’s critical for women to know they are not alone, moms and experts in the maternal field say. It’s also important for partners, families and friends of new moms to be aware of signs and symptoms of pregnancy-related depression and anxiety.

child. Her feelings included constant worry and unease over improbable things, like losing her husband of 15 years. She found solace in having a community to rely on, which included her husband, friends, obstetrician and a women’s support group at her church.

“Don’t be afraid to tell someone how you feel, even if you think it is small,” she said. “Just find somebody you can talk to, anybody that you feel comfortable enough to call.”

For mothers who don’t have a strong support network, Postpartum Support International has volunteer coordinators across the Denver metro area to assist in finding help and resources, such as local support groups. The free, confidential phone line is available in English or Spanish for moms or dads, 24 hours, seven days a week.

Smells like pot? City cracks down on odor from facilities Almost 100 facilities still have to submit odor control plans

Denver is about to crack down on the roughly onefifth of marijuana facilities that are overdue on providing plans to deal with odors coming from their sites, according to the city’s environmental health department.

City officials said June 12 marijuana companies that continue not to comply with Denver’s new odor control rules could be handed an up to $2,000 administrative citation and in some egregious cases risk further fines, being labeled a nuisance and the possibility of having to close down.

“Right now we’ve just passed 120-day mark since plans were due,” said Gregg Thomas, division director of environmental quality for the Denver Department of Environmental Health.

So far 97 marijuana facilities have yet to submit their plans, according to the city.

The dozen or so facilities outside of the marijuana industry that were required to submit plans have all complied and had their plans approved, according to the city.

“We’re now just getting into our busy season for odor complaints as folks open up their windows and spend more time outside,” said Bill Benerman, who helps handle air quality enforcement issues and air quality complaints for the city.

Denver’s new rules say businesses beyond marijuana grows and pet food manufacturers have to submit an Odor Control Plan if they receive five or more complaints — from separate households or businesses — within a 30-day period. So far this year, only one business has hit that threshold, Benerman told the committee.

ere’s a pop quiz. What fleshy fruit rich in healthy fats is sending more and more of its fans to the emergency room?

Here’s a hint. You probably think it’s a vegetable.

Here’s another hint. It’s not a tomato, but now and then they can be seen hanging out with each other.

They’re sometimes called “alligator pears.”

The most common variety was developed by a mail carrier in La Habra, California.

This should give it away. His name was Rudolph Hass.

The fruit itself is not dangerous. I have

injured myself on coconut shells, and I have hurt myself trying to open prickly pineapples.

No, this one is on us.

And the injury that results has a name.

It’s called “avocado hand.”

The ones at my grocery store generally are as firm as billiard balls. I let them mature before I try to slice them.

Some of us, however, are impatient, and slice away, first at the outer skin, then through the soft flesh of the avocado, then through the soft flesh of the hand.

Experts recommend slicing an avocado on a cutting board. Who does that? Maybe after you or I have severed a nerve or a tendon,

we will.

Hass had seen a magazine article that showed dollar bills hanging from an avocado tree. In 1925, he bought some existing varieties and began to graft. He patented his mother tree in 1935 (it died in 2002).

Hass was to receive 25 percent of the proceeds, but the patent was abused over and over, and Hass made less than $5,000 in his lifetime.

Growing up in the Midwest, I’d see a green avocado once in a blue moon. I wasn’t particularly interested in the fleshy fruit. I was, however, very interested in the pit.

It’s that instinctive feeling, maybe somewhere deep in our memory that we have actually met the person before, or we have run into their look-alike or doppelganger at some point in our lives, or perhaps they have run across us at some other time and place.

Now this is a very good thing when someone associates meeting us with a good memory or an honorable action. Something like, “Hey, don’t I know you?

Well maybe you have seen me at my best and you think you know me. But if I was at my worst, you would probably remember me too. That might sound like, “Hey, I remember you, you were that jerk who cut me off at the intersection this morning.” Or, “Don’t I know you? Aren’t you the same person I heard yelling and screaming at your child in the mall yesterday?”

Momentary observations or connections never really allow someone to know who we truly are deep inside. However, our actions and words certainly can influence someone’s first impression of us, can’t they? I mean, we try not to be judgmental, at least most of us do. But when we see something really powerful or moving, we can’t help but judge the action, the event, the outcome, or the person. And we have to remember that people are fairly consistent and predictable.

Mental health solutions must be culturally competent to be successful

ental health is a hard topic to discuss, treat and even ask about, especially in the Latino community. In my family, mental health was something we never disMENTAL cussed — assuming that illness was HEALTH something visible, tangible. But that misconception didn’t shield us from being deeply affected by the struggles of mental illness.

My brother struggled to manage his frustration Sandra Garciagrowing up, and we Hernandez did not know how to cope with the way his underlying mental illness affected our family. In high school he struggled academically, and at home he often did not want to talk to anyone, making communication with my parents more difficult and challenging to know how they could support him.

My family tried everything to cope: medical specialists, behavioral meetings at school, and the emergency room in dire situations.

With these meetings and treatments came hospital bills, missed

When we see or experience something that is positive or good, we may tell just a few of our family and friends. But when we see something that is really negative, bad, harmful, or unacceptable, we will tell as many people as we possibly can.

“Don’t I know you?”

Just like McDonald’s, or Starbucks, or Nike and other big brand names, we carry with us our own brand too.

When people see the Nike “Swoosh” they immediately think, “Just Do It.” When people say to us, “Don’t I know you?” what should our brand say about us? What should someone remember about us that made our encounter so memorable? Shouldn’t it be something powerful, positive,

work days and, sometimes, legal fines. For my parents, with their limited English, it was difficult to navigate and advocate for appropriate help.

For many communities of color, the challenge of diagnosis is often exacerbated by the challenge of understanding doctors and experts, in language — whether that’s speaking English or medical jargon — and in culture. When we do seek treatment, communities of color are often faced with options that are not culturally sensitive, are unaffordable, or of low quality.

Colorado recognizes that mental health is a challenging and nuanced part of a person’s overall health, so in May, for mental health month the state launched Let’s Talk Colorado, a campaign that aims to dispel myths and tackle stigmas that keep people from seeking treatment. Programs like this are important first steps that can be bolstered when people from diverse communities participate in these conversations.

After struggling for many years, my brother was was finally referred to a behavioral center where he was diagnosed with anxiety, a condition that wasn’t properly explained to my family. His doctor suggested medication as a treatment option,

respectable, honorable, good, or kind? I say that because I just can’t imagine that any one of us reading this column would prefer to be known as someone who others try to avoid, or is absolutely negative, rude, sad, hard hearted, and even hard-headed.

Without anyone to help us navigate the complexities of mental health, my brother’s condition worsened. After he turned 18, he stopped attending therapy and school. My parents were always willing to provide support and care, but did not know how. His doctors were not bilingual and didn’t explain dosages, side effects or benefits of different treatments in a way that made sense to my parents, so they did not understand the scope of his illness or how to treat it. All they knew were the potential dangerous side effects of medication, so my brother went into adulthood untreated.

People of color continue to receive disproportionately lower quality mental health care. We face disparities including cost, quality, and cultural stigma, which hold us back from seeking services. Many studies have shown better health outcomes when mental health treatment is patient-centered, integrated with physical health care, and takes into account the cultural

We need a healthcare system that is easy to navigate, with adequate resources sensitive to the patient’s’ needs.

Expanding resources that communities feel they can navigate will lead to more young adults receiving proper care to stay healthy and finish school, impacting their long-term health and financial stability. Ultimately, this will lead our communities to receive the quality health care needed to move closer towards eliminating disparities in mental health.

Let’s Talk Colorado and similar campaigns to end mental health stigma would be strengthened by including more resources for communities of color that address the unique barriers we face to talking about mental health, accessing care and understanding our treatment options. For many people, this would be a first step to discussing mental health in their own cultural language.

Exhibition on Western movies examines American mythology IF YOU GO

They’re coming at you before you enter the glass gallery doors!

A movie screen shows mounted horsemen rushing to the forefront — either chasing or evading someone else … These are clips from six different films, from historic black-and-white to contemporary, cycling continuously.

And all are possibly inspired by a classic American image mounted to the left of the screen: Charles Remington’s large 1889 oil on canvas painting called “A Dash for the Timber,” loaned by the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Denver Art Museum focuses on America’s special mythology in a new exhibit running through Sept. 10 called “The Western: An Epic in Art and Film.” This is the first such blend of still and moving images that emphasizes the artistic legacy and evolution contributing to the development of the Western genre. “It’s been a wonderful ride,” said DAM Director Christoph Heinrich, who also made a point of the support by the National Endowment for the Arts, which offers federal indemnity in addition to the usual high insurance coverage for art that is a national treasure.

The exhibit was co-curated by Thomas Brent Smith, director of the Petrie Institute at the Denver Art Museum, and Mary Dailey Desmarais, Ph.D., curator of International Modern Art

“The Western: An Epic in Art and Myth” runs through Sept. 10 at the Denver Art Museum and occurs to us as an ideal outing for visiting family members. Denver is a logical place to hold this exhibit as a crossroads of the Old and New West. The DAM is open daily except Mondays and this show requires special ticketing. “There are many touch points,” Smith said. Many directors referred to painting as they created films, both for subject matter and blocking the characters in a story. “This is a visual construct of the West … How we understand — or misunderstand — the West comes from movies,” Smith said. This is the first time the DAM has used film to this extent. A visitor has examples of the set, the cast and the artists/directors mingled through the exhibit, with related art and objects interspersed with a number of small spaces featuring film clips.

“From Bierstadt to Tarantino, it’s digestible … maybe memories from a long time ago — or yesterday,” Smith commented.

Directors John Ford, who covered

five decades and more than 150 films (starting with “Iron Horse” in 1924) and Sergio Leone, known for his “Spaghetti Westerns,” bookend the history, now picked up by many contemporary directors—some with tongue in cheek.

A section looking at the counterculture features artists Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha and Kent Monkman, as well as recent film such as “Brokeback Mountain” and “Django Unchained.”

We find changes from stories of the Old West to issues of our time, with more sympathetic images of Native Americans. Some recent films take the focus from agriculture to oil. Major shifts in culture included the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement. “We go to the Western to work it out,” Smith said.

Apartment brokers aren’t just for New York City anymore.

The tide of millennials moving to Denver means that more and more companies are offering services to people who need help finding an apartment. That includes one company that wants to use virtual reality to find your next place.

Jeff Settle, owner of Rental Friends, has been a Colorado apartment finder for the past 12 years, and says it’s definitely become a more popular business over the last three years.

But don’t worry, an apartment finder shouldn’t cost you. Settle says local tradition dictates that finders don’t charge fees to renters. Nor does he expect that to change: “There’s not a lot of room to build in downtown Manhattan anymore,” Settle explained. “In Denver, there’s so many new apartment communities. They’re going to need to get them filled and they’ll keep needing people.”

Instead, apartment buildings and some landlords pay commissions when people like Settle match them with a possible tenant. Brokers say that their clients are often looking to live close to downtown or Union Station — areas where rents are higher and new luxury apartment buildings are being built.

They say their personal relationships

with these communities mean renters get different, more up-to-date pricing than you’d find on a website.

But Sarah Jones, CEO of Bamboo Realty, says that’s not the same as a discount: “People always say `how effective are you in negotiating a discount?’ and I say not very. If an apartment says `this is the price,’ that’s the price. But where we do have the advantage is as soon as the price changes, we know first and so our clients know first,” she said.

Like Settle, Jones also agrees that the field has seen more companies enter Denver over the two years that Bamboo Realty has been operating here. But she’s not threatened by that, in part because of her past experience in the Houston market.

“In Houston, once we started seeing other firms also open and specialize in renters, and traditional brokerages develop a rental arm, the concentration of apartments that are leased with the help of a locator just grows,” Jones said.

“At the high-end buildings, 60-plus percent of the tenants that walked through the door were because of a broker. In Denver, I think the same thing is going to happen,” she said.

Unlike Houston, Jones says that people come to Denver and they really plan to stay.

That’s part of the reason why another company, Zumper, launched its own apartment finding service in Denver.

Co-Founder Taylor Glass-Moore says they started “Zumper Select” in Denver because they were seeing so many people relocating to the area.

Zumper has been operating in Denver for about six months and secured about 100 leases so far. But the end goal isn’t just notching up leases — Zumper is working on virtual reality solutions so that they can capture renters who aren’t even in Denver yet.

“We’ve actually had plenty of leases that have been signed sight unseen where our market rep was speaking with someone in a different city, recommending different properties, and doing a video tour,” Glass-Moore said.

“That for us is something that’s pretty important.”

It’s all part of a rental future that’s going to be “drastically different,” says Glass-Moore. In an on-demand world where you can order food or a car to your door, why leave your home to find a place to live?

“The renter could do that from their living room, do walk-throughs of these properties… Then they do VR tours, maybe for a dozen properties and choose one that stands out,” GlassMoore said. “That’s a really awesome experience and that’s the one that people are really looking forward to.”

Casual events bring communities together

ecruit friends and family. Throw on a T-shirt, shorts and sandals. Grab a bite to eat and take a seat on the grass under the warm summer sun. It’s the season of outdoor music concerts, and there is no shortage in the Denver metro area.

“I just think it’s great to sit outside and be able to relax in comfortable clothes,” said Philip Sneed, executive director of Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, which hosts Summer Stage, a music series featuring a mix of legacy rock bands and today’s popular tunes. “It’s a

great, casual way to enjoy music.”

And research shows that many Coloradans like music. The National Endowment for the Arts in a 2015 study found about 44 percent of residents attended a concert in the past 12 months, compared to about 32 percent of people nationwide, ranking third for most concertgoers behind Washington D.C. and Vermont.

Which explains why venues and summer music series are popping up across the metro area, such as Castle Rock’s Philip S. Miller Amphitheater or Thornton’s three-concert series that

benefits Adams County libraries.

Since its opening in May 2016, Philip S. Miller’s concert attendance rates have doubled, said Jennifer Reinhardt, events specialist of Castle Rock Parks and Recreation Department. Residents love having what she describes as a mini Red Rocks Amphitheatre — the popular Morrison venue nestled in giant rock formations that draws international performers and guests — in their backyards.

Avoid being narrow-minded — in life and music

O

ne of the main talking points constantly heard on cable news channels is how divided the country is these days.

Pundits and LINER political operatives NOTES have their theories.

If you hop online, you’ll be buried in an avalanche of think pieces from every possible source about the roots, causes and ways to bridge the divide. And don’t even get me started Clarke Reader on Facebook posts.

There’s no easy way to fix the situation. But a step in the right direction comes from years of listening to an ever-expanding variety of music — don’t judge until you’ve experienced it yourself.

We all think we have the best tastes in music when we’re in high school, which, at least for me, is a pretty ridiculous idea, since high school is the first time most of us begin to listen critically to what we

“You can have that experience and be five minutes from home,” Reinhardt said.

Some shows are free; others require a ticket purchase. For differing prices, guests can sit in the grass, on amphitheater steps, or in box seating, which includes a table pampered with food and drink service. Artists perform a variety of music, from popular country to classic rock.

Last year, Reinhardt was most excited to see The Marshall Tucker Band, a 1970s rock and country band known for its hit “Can’t You See.” This year, she is anticipating Little River Band, an Australian rock ensemble that she and her mom listened to in her younger years.

“We wanted to offer something to the diverse population we have in Castle Rock,” Reinhardt said of this summer’s lineup. “We choose bands based off of that.”

The Highlands Ranch Community Association has a small committee that helps select bands based on sound, genre, cost and availability for its free summer concert series, held at Highland Heritage Park,

hear. Nevertheless, high school is where many of us form opinions about what music we like and, equally important, which genres are not worth our time.

So, for someone like me, who was mainly into rock like the Dave Matthews Band, classics like Led Zeppelin and indie acts like Death Cab for Cutie, that essentially meant ignoring everything from country and alternative to hip-hop and pop.

In other words, I was missing some of the best music at the time because I thought I understood it and decided it wasn’t for me.

Once I started exposing myself to these genres and artists in college and day-to-day life, I realized these were vital and dynamic voices and perspectives I was missing out on.

I’m hopefully wiser, and certainly more empathetic, for giving them a chance.

From country, you can get a sense of small-town values and a more deliberate approach to life, whereas pop, at its best, can provide a joyous optimism that you won’t find in most other genres. You can find a similar joy in hip-hop, but you’ll also hear

Review: Isbell broke into the mainstream with 2015’s “Something More Than Free,” a collection of acoustic guitars and muscular poetry that could just flatten the listener with its beauty, but he aims for something grander on “The Nashville Sound.” There are more bar-stompers than anything he’s done since leaving the Drive-By Truckers, but it’s his quiet numbers that still hit the stories of struggle and overcoming adversity that is such a crucial part of the “American dream.”

By no means are these the only reasons to listen to the aforementioned genres, nor is any genre just one thing. But what listening to any or all of them does is provide a three- to five-minute window into a different world view.

With the internet and multitude of streaming options, there are more ways than ever to find music that’ll move and surprise you. And, per-

“People bring their dinner and blankets and spend the evening with family and friends listening to great music,” said Jamie Noebel, community relations manager of the Highlands Ranch Community Association. “There is plenty of space for the children to play where they can be seen from the adults seat.”

Littleton resident Lela Marcin frequents the Highlands Ranch concerts with family, sometimes friends. She loves the warm evening weather and the park’s epic views of the sun setting over the

mountain range.

“The music seems so much better when you’re outside,” said Marcin.

Outdoor concerts in the summer have long been popular, said Sneed.

The city of Arvada decided to invest in an amphitheater at Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities in the early 1990s because there weren’t as many concert venues compared to today, he said.

What used to be a venue with 1970s and 80s acts appealing to an older crowd now offers a variety of music genres, from Colorado Symphony on July 8 to classic rock band Three Dog Night on July 14 to blues singer Johnny Lang on Sept.

10. Concerts usually average about 1,000 attendees. Tickets range in

“As time goes by and musical tastes change, they still have an audience, but not as big.”

Summer music concerts, for profit or free, bring communities together, organizers say.

Anythink’s Backyard Concert Series in Thornton hosts three free concerts on the second Friday of the month through August. Held at the one-acre park adjacent to Anythink Wright Farms, 5877 E. 120th Ave., the production is a chance for neighbors to mingle over music.

A variety of food trucks are on site and 10 percent of sales benefit Anythink Foundation, a nonprofit for special projects and programs at Anythink Libraries in Adams County.

The concerts have been successful on a number of counts, including fundraising, building community and elevating the awareness of the library, said Anythink Director Pam Smith.

“The concerts are fun, lighthearted and a great way to enjoy Friday evenings in a convivial way,” she said. “Watching the kids play with bubbles and dance is always one of the most endearing scenes.”

Here are the places in and around Denver where you can celebrate the United States of America with bright lights and loud noises.

Saturday, July 1 Glendale Fireworks Show Approximately Cherry Street and Cherry Creek Drive South Dusk There’s not much to it: they just set off fireworks. All you have to do is find somewhere to watch.

Two recommendations, if you want to make an evening of it: Four Mile Historic Park (715 Forest St.) will have live music, old-fashioned games, historic demonstrations and horse-drawn wagon rides to celebrate.

You can stick around to watch the fireworks and enjoy food-truck fare and a Dry Dock Brewing Company beer garden.

And nearby Cranmer Park will be having a picnic with food trucks and the Denver Municipal Brass Band starting at 6 p.m.

Monday, July 3 Independence Eve Civic Center Park 8 p.m., free The eighth-annual celebration in Civic Center Park will include live music from Soul X and the 101st Army Band of the Colorado National Guard.

Seating is first-come, first-served, and you should bring a blanket or lawn chair. You’re also welcome to bring

Family members of all ages will be fascinated to learn how animals are engineered to survive in our world despite ongoing challenges. “Nature’s Amazing Machines” opened June 16 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and will continue through New Year’s Day of 2018.

Adaptation is considered from the very large (how can a giraffe’s heart pump blood up its long neck to its brain?) to tiny (how can insects fly with no lungs?) to speed (how can a cheetah run so fast?).

Train superstar makes annual Golden visit

The museum opens at 8 a.m. Activities will shut down at 5 p.m. and the grounds will close by 6 p.m. Riders should plan on arriving at least one hour before their train departs, as it is sometimes difficult to reschedule a missed train ride. Families may stay afterward for as long as they would like to enjoy the activities.

It’s one thing for children to see Thomas in a picture book or play with a small-scale model toy of him, Tallman said.

“But to see him in person and ride behind a full-size Thomas is a really special experience for families,” he added.

Thomas the Tank Engine is seen as just as much of a rock star among preschoolers as The Beatles among teens in the 1960s, said Donald Tallman, the executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum.

“Thomas is multigenerational,” Tallman said. “He connects families in a very special way.”

Thomas the Tank Engine is making his annual return to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden on June 24 and 25, July 1 and 2 and July 8 and 9.

A ticket includes access to museum exhibits and model trains, and special Day Out With Thomas activities, which include a petting zoo, temporary tattoos, the Imagination Station, sing-a-longs, bean bag toss, hula hoops, bubbles, ladder golf and a magic show.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet the character Sir Topham Hatt.

It is recommended to plan a two-hour visit to enjoy all the Thomas activities, Tallman said.

‘Old-fashioned fun’ draws largest pinball crowd yet Games and tournaments are blast from the past

For three days each year, blinking pinball machines, old-school arcade games and sounds of bells, beeps and whistles fill the first floor of Denver Marriott South in Lone Tree.

Here is where players, collectors and families assemble to partake in the pastime of analog gaming.

“I think it’s a unique art form that is coming back,” said Dan Nikolich, who with his wife, Holly, founded Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown and Gameroom Expo. “It’s something that you get to touch and feel versus everything in the digital world.”

Nikolich, 38, used to fix vintage gaming systems as a teenager and purchased his first pinball machine after college. Holly has a background in marketing and public relations.

Together the couple started a tradition that would bring life to a hobby that nearly died in 1999, when one of the largest manufacturers, WMS Industries, closed its pinball division.

The three-day tradition started 14 years ago with some 80 games and a couple hundred people. This year’s event, held June 8-11, featured nearly 300 games and drew thousands of guests from across the west.

For many who came, pinball is more than leveraging a tiny ball through a glass box. It’s a skill, a challenge, an art to be mastered. It holds special memories from childhood for some. It’s a collector’s item for others.

Brandon Wheeler was 9 or 10 years old when he played his first pinball machine. Its theme was Jurassic Park, his favorite movie at the time. When he was 25, he purchased his first pinball machine — also Jurassic Park-themed.

Since then, he has owned 30 machines and repaired 50 to 100.

“It starts with one and they multiply,” said Wheeler, 33, of Centennial, also a tournament director of the expo. “A lot of people see movies and then want to play the game.”

Pinball, which Wheeler describes as a sport, is making a comeback for a number of reasons: the gaming community is more inclusive, older generations are passing the hobby to their kids and grandkids, and more companies are producing games, he said.

“It’s a way for companies to license popular or nostalgic property,” said Wheeler.

At the expo, themes of machines ranged from Popeye the Sailor, a newspaper comic launched in 1919, to today’s hit HBO series Game of Thrones.

“You can totally nerd out on this stuff,” said Galvin, 33, a Denver resident who sat on a women’s panel at the expo.

Sitting a few seats down from her was Helena Higgins, women’s world champion of pinball. Higgins, originally from Sweden but now living in Thornton, said she played competitive volleyball for years and always had a knack for ball sports. Pinball was big in Sweden in the 1990s, so she started playing and competing. In 2011, at a competition, she met a man from Thornton and last year the two married at 1up LoDo, a bar and arcade in downtown Denver.

“It’s beautiful and it challenges you,” Higgins said of pinball. “It’s fun to learn the rules and be able to master the game.”

Not everyone at the expo had a history with pinball. Some people accompanied a child or spouse to simply enjoy a day of games. After receiving a wristband in a hall of the hotel, attendees had access to a giant conference room and several smaller rooms lined with every type of game — from a wooden arcade game to a life-size Pac-Man displayed on a giant screen.

Vendors nestled in the corners selling tech gadgets like fidget spinners and portable lights.

Deborah Hindman, of Littleton, was there for her husband, an avid participant of the hobby. The 43-year-old hopped from game to game. Wizard of Oz is her favorite.

Cinnamon Harold, of Denver, perched behind her 4-year-old son as he maneuvered a Spider Man machine.

Her reason for attending was simple: “It’s just old-fashioned fun.”

There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act.
