Whether you’re a basketball fan or not, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve encountered the Harlem Globetrotters at some point.

The team has been entertaining basketball fans and wider audiences alike since it was founded by Abe Saperstein in 1926. Over the years, the Globetrotters have built a reputation as being especially skilled at tricks, dunks and other displays of court mastery.

But as Firefly Fisher, a guard on the team for the past nine years, can attest, all that ease on the court requires countless hours of work.

“On this team, you have to be entertainers and basketball players,” the 31-year-old New York native said.

“You have to be a special individual to do this job, and work extremely hard. But it’s all a positive, especially when you get to introduce basketball to families.”

As part of the Harlem Globetrotters’ 92nd world tour, the team will be stopping by the Pepsi Center, 1000 Chopper Circle in Denver, at noon

Democrats in Legislature stop three gun bills

How did you get into playing basketball?

I was born and raised in New York. My parents were the ones who introduced me to the game when I was about 5 years old, and I grew up playing in the Boys and Girls Club.

Three gun-related proposals — one propelled by a former Columbine High School student — in the state Legislature hit a wall the week after a shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17, but two more bills were on the runway as of Feb. 22.

A bill to allow the permitted concealed carrying of handguns on the grounds of public elementary, middle, junior high or high schools in the state was struck down in committee on a 6-3 party-line vote Feb. 21, according to a news release from the state House Democrats, who are in the majority. Generally, people 21 and older in Colorado can get permits for concealed carry.

City’s rent assistance proposal in spotlight Key planner leaving as idea faces internal review

Denver has a plan to help renters afford apartments around the city.

In the six months since it was announced, the new LIVE program has been hailed as an innovation and criticized as a handout to luxury apartment owners. It’s become a focus point of local debate and won a full feature in The Wall Street Journal — and that’s before it even gets started.

Now, one of its key planners is resigning from city government and the program faces an internal review, though city staffers say that it’s still on track for potential approval next month.

LIVE, which stands for Lower Income Voucher Equity, is based on a familiar concept: Section 8 vouchers, a federal program created in 1983 that helps people pay their rent in privately owned apartments.

There’s only a limited number of the existing federal vouchers — about 7,000 in Denver, at a yearly cost of $73 million — and most of the money is reserved for people with the least income. The vast majority of Section

Erik Soliván, the mayor’s housing adviser, has described LIVE as a local extension of the voucher concept, with a focus on higher incomes. It targets people making 40 percent to 80 percent of area median income — a group typically including hospital workers, teachers, nurses and emergency workers.

They’re above (the cutoff for) social benefits, generally, but they’re still struggling with housing affordability,” he said in an earlier interview with Denverite. (He also announced recently that he would resign on March 2.)

“The LIVE program was designed to look at a band of need that was, in many ways, just past what’s called a social benefit cliff,” he added.

Programs differ The federal vouchers have a couple important rules. First, the feds set a cap on the maximum rent for buildings where they can be used. In Denver, the government says “fair market rent” for a two-bedroom is $1,418.

The federal voucher pays some of that, and recipients pay a portion too — typically, it’s 30 percent of their income.

The city program, LIVE, works the almost same way, but it makes two big changes.

First, it changes the calculation for fair rent. Instead of choosing one level for the entire metro, LIVE would choose a different rent level for each neighborhood.

That could potentially allow the program to pay higher rent and get recipients into pricier neighborhoods.

“We know a family that’s going to go live in Cap Hill needs a little bit higher voucher subsidy,” Soliván said. “We’re going to compare those units to units in the same neighborhood and say, here’s what we pay for one-bedrooms in the Highland versus one-bedrooms in Windsor.”

LIVE also will ask renters to contribute more money — 35 percent of their income — which again means it can pay higher overall rent.

Finally, the program proposes that 5 percent of clients’ rent payments will be set aside as savings and returned to them when they exit the program.

What is ‘luxury’?

LIVE has picked up a reputation:

The Wall Street Journal described it as a plan for Denver’s “many luxury apartments.” It’s been discussed as a way to take advantage of the surplus of high-end units, which have far higher vacancy rates than cheaper homes.

It could indeed open up higher-rent apartments, but Soliván denied that it was a luxury subsidy.

“When you think about `luxury’ apartments, what do you think about?

Doorman, Union Station, Cherry Creek,” he said, citing $2,500 two-bedrooms as his definition of “luxury.”

“This program doesn’t target that, because those rents are simply too high to even bring down …”

The initial results will prove that point, he said. The owners of about 300 units have formally expressed interest so far.

“They were apartments in 22 different ZIP codes, in all different council districts,” he said.

The program’s initially meant to cover about 400 households. The city is working with foundations and employers to match public funds — for example, Chipotle has said it will give money and identify employees who could use the vouchers.

Economic query At a council meeting on Feb. 20, Councilman Kevin Flynn asked whether the program would disrupt market processes that would otherwise drive down prices.

“I think the theory of the market is that if a landlord has a lot of vacant units, he’s charging too much,” Flynn said. He was worried that it “does not provide any incentive for landlords to lower rents. I’m worried that we’re feeding the spiral.”

A Harvard University expert asked a similar question, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal. Soliván said at the time that LIVE is necessary because rents aren’t coming down fast enough.

Councilwoman At-large Robin Kniech also has asked why the city administration set programs in motion before council and others got to debate its long-term housing plan.

The elected leaders could get a crack at LIVE soon enough. The program could go to Denver City Council as early as March, according to Derek Woodbury, spokesman for the Office of Economic Development.

First, however, it’s under review.

“This program is currently being reviewed and vetted internally, prior to advancing to city council for consideration,” Woodbury wrote in an email.

“This is a complex program, involving multiple parties and several different legal agreements. We are very much in our standard due diligence process, and we look forward to bringing the program forward for full consideration in the coming weeks.”

Council votes for plan backing affordable housing

Denver’s elected leaders on Feb. 20 approved the course for the city’s next five years of spending on affordable housing with an 11-1 decision.

Even as they voted, though, city councilmembers called for the city to find more new money for housing.

“If the City of Denver does not double the (housing) fund this year, find the funds this year, this year, we will be in trouble,” said Council President Albus Brooks.

“Not only am I predicting we will come together with the mayor’s office to find those funds this year, I’m saying, `We need to.’”

The city’s new housing fund, approved in 2016, was designed to generate about $15 million per year over a decade.

The newly approved five-year strategy calls for the creation or preservation of 3,000 units of affordable housing from 2018 to 2023. For comparison, Denver needs “at least an additional 15,500 units” for its lowest-income residents, the plan suggests.

The new housing plan does not actually call for a greater volume of new affordable housing. Its numerical goal is the same as Denver’s last five-year housing plan.

However, this plan has a heavier focus on the lowest-income housing, which is more expensive to provide.

“This is really the first housing plan the city’s had that addresses housing needs across the entire spectrum,” said Laura Brudzynski of the city’s Office of Economic Development.

The plan suggests spending up to half the housing money on people who make less than 30 percent of the area median income. (That’s about $23,000 for a family of three.)

It also says Denver should fund programs to help people find and keep housing, which are expected to cover 30,000 households.

Some of the plan’s ideas include: • Property tax relief for low-income homeowners • Better protections for renters • More consistent requirements for new affordable housing when areas are redeveloping quickly • Better using city land for housing • Helping people build alternative dwelling units.

Councilmembers and advocates previously criticized the plan for a perceived lack of detail — and people on Feb. 20 had lots of suggestions, but it enjoyed broad support.

with the Home Builders Association of Denver, warned that the plan may underestimate the need for housing.

“As anti-growth sentiment develops in some of the suburban areas and neighboring municipalities, we do anticipate additional demand for affordable housing in Denver proper,” he said.

Advocates also urged the council to address “permanent affordability.” Many affordable housing units are allowed to “expire” and return to market rate in as little as 20 years for a typical development — something Brooks said they could examine later.

Councilwoman At-large Debbie Ortega said she wanted the city to look at controlling rents. “What are we doing to bring that price point down?” she asked.

The state government forbids cities from putting legal limits on rent, but Councilman Paul López said that the city should lobby to change that.

“When we’re silent, there’s no action,” he said.

Councilman Kevin Flynn voted against the plan, saying he was concerned that it didn’t properly address housing needs in southwest Denver.

He was especially concerned about a map that labeled Bear Valley and DIA residents as “vulnerable to displacement.”

He described Bear Valley as “upper middle-class,” and said other parts of his district seemed more vulnerable. Flynn also questioned a map that said parts of his suburban district have “hip” and “chic” businesses. (More like “hip replacements,” he joked.)

“I agree with the goals and recommendations (of the plan), but I worry about how the data shows the resources should be allocated,” he said in an interview afterward.

All other councilmembers voted for the plan, except Councilwoman At-large Robin Kniech, who was absent.

“It’s an aspirational plan that commits to doing the legwork needed to fine-tune the action,” said Councilman Paul Kashmann. “… It really touches all the bases that are important.”

The discussion of the plan comes just as the city’s housing effort goes through some major changes.

Erik Soliván, a housing adviser to the mayor, announced last week that he would soon resign from the city government. Meanwhile, the city is hiring a “chief housing officer.”

It’s unclear why Soliván is leaving. He was a principal author of the plan.

How did you become a Globetrotter?

I started playing for them in 2009, after being drafted to the team in 2008.

I went to Siena College in upstate New York, and our team went to the NCAA in 2008. I shot 44.4 percent from three-point range as a senior that season and that’s when I was drafted.

Since, I’ve been to 65 different countries, and love what I do.

When I tell people I was picked for the team, they always say it’s right up my alley. I was voted class clown as senior, but I was also voted most likely to succeed. I’m just being me.

What is key to being a good member of the Globetrotters?

You have to be a great basketball player, and you have to be willing to

I never played any recreational ball for city teams or anything like that, and started on junior varsity in eighth grade.

I guess I was a late bloomer to organized ball, but I just loved it.

Do you remember the first time you saw or heard of the Globetrotters?

I didn’t really watch them as a young kid, but I knew about them because my parents had grown up watching them.

What I did know is that they traveled all over and that brought a lot of happiness to people.

Playing for them is a great way to make my parents proud, which is always a goal for a kid.

But what’s most important is you have to respect the culture of Globetrotters. If you come into the organization not knowing the history and sacrifices others made before you, it’s important to learn. You can go learn how to do tricks and stuff, but that’s all after they teach you the history.

Not many people can last with the organization because it’s quite a commitment, and there’s a lot of time away from the family. We’re on the road for more than 200 days a year, and all the stuff people see us doing on the court is only about 40 percent of what we do. The rest of the time we’re visit-

As a Globetrotter, you’ve done some military tours. What is it like playing for people serving in the armed forces?

We’ve done six military tours, and it’s a great experience every time. In my first year, we went to Iraq, and just three years ago, we went to Afghanistan. We did our first-ever Hoops for the Troops event in Hawaii this December.

It’s so amazing to put smiles on the men and women who serve our country. And few people can relate to being away from their families and helping people like they can.

What do you do for fun or to relax when you’re not playing?

I spend time with my family, and I have my own basketball camp back home, which I’ve run for 14 years.

I’ve always worked with kids, and always tried to be a positive role model to them. In a way, I was a Globetrotter before I officially became one. There’s nothing better than going back to your community and teaching kids. I don’t want to forget where I came from, and want my hometown to be successful as possible.

What’s your favorite part about being a Globetrotter?

Putting smiles on people’s faces.

So many people have bad days or are facing challenges in their life — like relationships, financial or school. But when you come to a Harlem Globetrotter game, you’re guaranteed to forget about your problems for two hours.

You don’t have to love basketball to love the Globetrotters, because at our games you’re going to laugh, hear great music and get to party. It’s an experience everyone should have at some time.

GOP governor candidates avoid squabbles in forum Stapleton, Coffman, Mitchell, Robinson jockey to stand out on issues

Powerful statewide positions and big family names — think Bush and Romney — hover over the Republican race for governor. But political posturing about being an outsider was also on display at a GOP candidates’ forum in Denver that saw four hopefuls discuss energy, transportation and job training.

“I come to you as a family man,” said Victor Mitchell, a businessman from Castle Rock who called himself an outsider. “I’ve never signed anything but a paycheck.”

Mitchell served in the state Legislature from 2007-09 and had about $2.2 million on hand as of February. And he wasn’t the only one to position himself as a commonsense newcomer — Doug Robinson, a former investment banker and a Mitt Romney nephew, stressed his experience in the technology industry.

Walker Stapleton, state treasurer and a second cousin of former President George W. Bush, came out aggressively after the Democratic gubernatorial candidates, drawing a clear line and sounding confident enough to look past his GOP opponents. Cynthia Coffman, state attorney general, sounded some moderate notes, touted her experience in office and even got some laughs along the way. The forum steered mostly clear of personal or even policybased attacks among the Republican candidates.

Here’s what the candidates had to say on transportation, energy and job training at the Feb. 21 forum hosted at the History Colorado Center by the Denver Business Journal and the Colorado Business Roundtable, an organization that advocates for business interests in legislation.

Training for future Vocational education, sometimes called career and technical education, is

necessary in bridging Colorado’s rural-urban economic divide, Mitchell said.

“Apprenticeship periods of five years (have) a tremendous chilling effect,” Mitchell said. “We’re not teaching vocational classes in schools, especially our rural schools.”

Doing so would “make sure that Colorado is very much open for business,” he added. Stapleton echoed that point, saying the state should be a better partner in making sure companies can fill the jobs they offer.

“We have candidates on the Democratic side that are telling people everyone should go to college and ... be saddled with debt, and the jobs won’t be waiting for them,” Stapleton said.

Investing in vocational training could come from current state funds, he said.

Coffman supported incentivizing skills training done on the job for employees who are just starting out.

Robinson took the opportunity to again talk up his experience in a technology nonprofit, KidsTek, which provides technology-based education programs, and said businesses should lead on filling the gaps rather than the government.

Roads, bridges and other ‘modes’ The candidates offered varying degrees of support for spending on multimodal transportation, or transportation that includes public transport like the RTD light rail.

“I was in the (former Gov. Bill) Owens administration when we did the T-REX project,” said Coffman, who was Owens’ chief legal counsel.

Coffman said extra money Colorado will take in due to the recent federal tax cuts should be used for transportation spending and that a percentage should go toward the light rail, which she says the state must get more people to use in order for it to be successful.

Other candidates beat around the multimodal question, though.

“Remember that businessschool class?” Robinson asked the crowd. “Commerce follows infrastructure.”

of transportation, he added, “Sure, I think you have to do (multimodal) as well, but it’s really about our roads.”

Mitchell said that the Colorado Department of Transportation is badly managed and would use the state’s Legislative Audit Committee in a performance-based way to evaluate it.

Colorado can’t have “a first-world economy with a third-world infrastructure,” Stapleton said, adding that the head of CDOT would be an engineer “when I’m governor.” He stressed roads and bridges specifically and mentioned doing more for rural areas.

Fracking and renewables The candidates all opposed giving local governments more control over drilling for oil and gas, and also opposed raising the current state requirement that investor-owned utilities generate 30 percent of their electricity from renewable energy by 2020.

“You know where the Democrats stand — they want to put the thumb of government in favor of one kind of energy over another,” Robinson said, adding that “renewables are fine” but should compete in the market without government help.

Robinson implied that

fracking doesn’t cause pollution, and Stapleton said it can be done safely. The Environmental Protection Agency in 2015 found that fracking has not led to widespread impacts on drinking water, but did find that drinking water was affected in some cases and that fracking fluid has reached surface water and groundwater in some instances. Those cases were relatively few, but the study recognized that its data could be underestimating.

“We all want clean air and clean water,” Mitchell said, but added that renewables shouldn’t be subsidized.

He and Stapleton pointed to Democratic proposals to transition the state to 100 percent renewable energy use by 2040, which he said would be too expensive.

When asked how to address homeowners’ concerns about drilling encroaching on their areas, each candidate didn’t answer until pushed by the moderator. Robinson said there should be clear rules on where suburban sprawl can grow; Coffman said people have to accept the risks of building schools or houses where there might be drilling.

Other remarks In a forum that mostly

avoided the Republicans comparing themselves to one another, Stapleton made a point of directing points at the Democrats, tagging gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Boulder) as “running to end the energy industry as we know it” for his 100 percent renewableenergy proposal.

Stapleton also said Democratic candidates’ push for a single-payer healthcare system, in which all residents could buy health care from the government rather than private insurers, would send businesses packing.

Coffman praised Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for implementing one of the nation’s “right-to-work” laws, which generally prevent labor unions from requiring employees to pay fees or dues. She wants such a law passed in Colorado.

Robinson said virtual reality and artificial intelligence are coming “in a big way” to the Colorado economy and that workers need to be prepared for the future.

The forum seldom discussed education funding, but Mitchell said he’d push for a freeze on highereducation costs during his tenure if he were to be elected.

VOICES Somehow time is a fastball that throws you a curve

T

ime flies. Time really flies.

I just received an invitation to pre-order a 2019 SUV. The vehicle isn’t in the works: It already exists.

I received the invitation in February 2018.

When I was a kid, QUIET the debut of the new DESPERATION year automobiles was a very big deal. Maybe some of you remember?

It happened in the fall, not the previous winter.

We would be teased with full-page newspaper ads and flashy television commerCraig Marshall cials, and almost all of the American cars Smith were debuted at about the same time.

Now it’s whenever they feel like it.

The first sign of trouble was the 1964

1/2 Mustang. The 1964 Mustang had been a huge success, and Ford was in high gear for the 1965 Mustang, but Ford was asked to provide the pace car for the 1965 Indianapolis 500, and came up with a special convertible. It was later turned into a production vehicle.

In our home, the weeks before the debut of the new models was just like the weeks before Christmas.

My father sold Buicks.

But when he saw the 1958 Buicks, he moved down the street and sold Fords.

He brought home a new demo once a month, and we pretended it was the family car.

I am sure there are men and women leaning into their computers somewhere, designing 2020, 2021, and 2022 automobiles.

When I was in high school, freshmen who made a team were awarded sweater numerals.

My numbers looked like the distant future, beyond my comprehension.

We were assigned George Orwell’s

“1984” and that was even more incomprehensible. Then 1984 came and went.

Next stop? Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but first we were supposed to party like it was 1999.

Kubrick’s film was released in 1968.

Prince’s song was released in 1982.

I retired in 2003, and I kept the intention to myself for two years. They were very long years. I marked off the weeks on my calendars.

It’s been 15 years. Where did it go?

What did I do? Who was I with?

Hindsight, it is said, is 20/20. I am looking forward to the year 2020 already for two reasons. One for a reason I can’t tell you, and another for a reason I can: there will be a presidential election.

Things will start to warm up in 2019.

I expect it will be fraught with political thunder, layered with impressive promises, and scripted by Monty Python. I can’t wait.

I want you to get out “Dark Side of the Moon,” and listen to “Time.”

“You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.”

On his deathbed, David Cassidy said something that was more meaningful, I think, than anything else he had ever said or had ever done.

“So much wasted time.”

I have frittered and I have wasted. I try not to anymore: There are far fewer calendar years left in my life than there were when I was handed my high school numerals.

When I was 14, I looked at men my age now, and thought they were walking antiques. What were they doing out of bed?

Now I am one of them. It’s funny how that happens. You get up in the morning and go to work, and the next thing you know you’re getting discounts at the zoo.

In touch and staying in touch with those who mean so much

I

f we look back over the past several weeks, months, or even years, I would bet that we can think of some people in our lives that we wish we would have stayed in touch with more often.

Maybe it’s a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a sibling, a child, a friend, or maybe even a co-worker. Someone who we lost touch with and we realized that we could have done a better job of being the one to keep the connection going.

WINNING Maybe something got WORDS in the way. Perhaps it was distance, and the miles between the two of you just became a mile too far.

Or maybe it was a disagreement or a simple difference of opinion that was never quite resolved.

Here’s the one that Michael Norton might ring truer than the others, maybe we just didn’t invest the time to make a call, send an email, stay in touch via text, or even just stay connected through social media.

Now for me personally, my great-aunt doesn’t have email, she doesn’t have a cell

phone, and she is certainly not on social media of any kind. She lives in an assisted living residence now that my great-uncle has passed away.

The two of them were very good to my sister and me over the years. They never had children of their own, and I know they loved being there for us in so many ways. A painful confession for me is that there was a period of time where I lost touch with them, and it was all on me.

Each year they would send cards and call on birthdays and holidays, and in turn we would send a card back.

Unfortunately, it became the accepted norm in the rush and crush of life as I was “busy” and was doing everything I could for my own family.

I made the excuse that time was not my friend and just continued to accept that the occasional holiday card and seldom telephone call were okay.

Shame on me. These were two really important people in my life and I needed to fix that. I wrote them a very heartfelt letter, as I knew my uncle enjoyed writing. It was probably that they were so awesome that they never made me feel bad about our lack of communication, instead just expressed extraordinary gratitude that we were talking again and writing.

They lived in Maine, and as I lived in Colorado, it wasn’t like I could just drive over for a Sunday dinner. So we agreed to talk each week and continue writing. I also added sending a postcard from wherever I happened to be traveling to that week.

Reading this column might seem like you are subjected to torture, like being forced to watch someone else’s home videos. My intent is not to torture you, but to remind us all that there are people in our lives that are just too important to settle for a holiday card or seldom telephone call.

And I really don’t care what the cause of the lack of connection or communication might be, all I do know is that one day we will all realize that all we did was make excuses for not staying in touch.

If it was a disagreement or fight, that’s okay, forgive them and reach out. If it is just too many miles apart, so what, they have telephone calls, texts, emails, letters, Facetime and Skype and for that. If it is pride, have a good look in the mirror and talk with yourself, they were important to you and they are still important to you or you wouldn’t even be reading this far into my column.

And lastly, if you think that they don’t want to hear from you, even if you were the one at fault, I promise you that they do.

What’s the worst thing that can happen?

The person doesn’t respond? Well at least you put in the effort. What’s the best thing that can happen? You reconnected with people who have always meant something to you. These are the people we stay in touch with and who we hope to stay in touch with forever.

By the way, my great-aunt is still alive. We stay in touch each week and I send her flowers every month.

Before moving into her assisted living apartment, she was quite the gardener, and she loves flowers so very much. It’s the best 30-60 minutes of my week, and the best use of a little extra cash that I can think of.

So how about you? What are you waiting for? Is there someone you really need to reconnect with and make sure that they know how you feel about them? They are only a phone call, text, email, letter, or postcard away. YMCA Denver has released 2018 summer day camp schedule for Denver Metro Area With the chill in the air, it may seem too early to start planning for summer, but local programs and organizations have released their 2018 summer camp calendars. The themed programs are being held at different dates and times depending on location between May and August.

Some of the 2018 week-long camps being held between May and August include:

YMCA Denver

Work hard! Play Hard: The day camp is scheduled for early June, where local youth will participate in a vigorous week of sports.

Registration for summer day camps started on Feb. 12. To participate in the camps, the cost is $195 for non-members per week, and $190 for members. A mandatory $25 deposit is required for every camp you register for. There is a $35 registration fee for each child. For information, visit the YMCA website at www.denverymca.org.

Gold Rush: Campers will experience the places and events that make Colorado unique.

Degas exhibit is gem at Denver Art Museum Painter died a century ago and left immense mark on world

Why a Degas exhibit now?

“It’s a celebration of the centenary of Degas’ death in 1917,” said Dr. Timothy Standring, Gates Family Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Denver Art Museum, as he spoke prior to the opening of a special exhibit he had been working on for five years. He spoke of “Degas’ escape — affirming while obliterating his marks on paper,” as he reworked his pieces at times.

“Degas: A Passion for Perfection” was sold out on its opening day and will continue as a specially ticketed exhibit through May 20. The exhibit was first organized by Jane Munroe, keeper of paintings and prints at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England and was locally curated

by Standring, who added items from other collections to the original selection, offering more than 100 works. As he spoke about the project, he said, “no isn’t in my vocabulary” when it comes to borrowing artworks. (One owner at the Maastricht Art Fair in the Netherlands was reluctant because he wanted to sell a piece instead of loaning. “I’ll find a buyer,” Standring replied — and did!)

showing many aspects of Degas’ acute awareness of his surroundings and society — and endless curiosity. Born into a somewhat wealthy family, he had a classical education, which would have afforded many ideas for artworks early on — and he did start painting as a teen.

Degas’ prolific 60-year career touched on many of his diverse interests, from ballet, dancers as individuals and theater to landscapes and cityscapes of Paris street life, to horse racing. Largely self-trained, he transformed from a portraitist and painter of historic subjects and transitioned into an interest in the contemporary scene. An interesting turn-ofthe-century film clip shows a street scene that looks very familiar, from Degas’ and other Impressionists’ art. (Although Standring said Degas disliked being called an Impressionist.)

In his last years, “he was pretty much blind,” and turned to creating clay and wax models, intended to be cast in bronze.

Many were found in poor condition in his studio after his death and repaired and cast by

a foundry hired by his family.

His mother was a Cajun from New Orleans and his father came from Naples. (The Italian grandfather escaped from a revolution on horseback, carrying gold, and started banks.)

After an attempt at studying law, at his father’s insistence, he embarked on an artist’s training by copying the earlier masters at the Louvre and elsewhere — the common way to study in the 19th century, as well as attending Le Ecole des Beaux Artes. Exhibits followed with his contemporaries.

He learned to emulate the Academic painters and said “One certainly needs courage if one is to approach nature.”

He created a new painting technique, recognized as turpentine in the U.S., mixing the pigments with gasoline. It thinned the paint, allowing for precise lines and a flat effect.

The painter Corot was an influence in his development of landscapes and he worked on smaller pieces with pastels, some watercolor, some oil. Repetition was an ongoing theme, with numerous versions of a given subject or scene.

Standring said Degas’ studio in Paris was reported to be a pigpen because he never wanted to give anything away — and his eyesight was degenerating. During his productive years, he created many monotypes, where a painting is created on a metal plate and paper is laid on it and pulled off as a print. He made more than one impression from a plate and added in pastels.

“It was all about process — making, making, making,” Standring commented.

The curator followed Degas’ steps in Paris, including a visit to his tomb in Montmartre, and said “we really wanted to tell the right story” in this exhibit that represents about 20 public and private collection, including that of the Denver Art Museum, which owns three pastels and two sculptures. He said scholars love to talk about Degas’ dysfunctional family, but he did not elaborate on the subject.

Standring agreed and spun off into the painters’ many influences, including Japanese prints. And flexibility.

“Sometimes, he added strips of paper to a drawing,” to get proportions right. He might be compared to more contemporary Rauschenberg and Richter. A close look will reveal those added strips pasted on the edge of a drawing.

He was commercially successful, despite difficult family finances. British and French collectors bought his work, including at an auction following his death.

(Fitzwilliam Museum’s collection is an example.) He also accumulated a personal art collection.

It’s an active season in the publishing world as well as a great time of year to curl up with a new book or old favorite — and/or, most especially, to read aloud to children — and each other.

• On Feb. 12, readers and writers gathered at Tattered Cover Aspen Grove to hear best-selling author Peter Heller offer a relaxed, humorous talk about “Celine,” a mystery based on his mother, who was a private investigator. He read several

passages, including the opening lines that set the scene. It has just been published in paperback, as are his novels, “Dog Star” and “Painter.” He answered questions about his process in storytelling. (“I start with the first line …”)

Heller will also be a keynote speaker at the upcoming — and impressive — March 3 Colorado Book Festival, to be held at Denver Central Library, with program chaired by well-known Castle Rock nature writer Mary Taylor Young. (More information below.)

“As a former Columbine student who was a sophomore during the shootings on April 20, 1999, I will do everything in my power to prevent Colorado families from enduring the hardships my classmates and I faced that day,” Neville said in a news release.

The proposal, House Bill 18-1037, has been introduced every year Neville has served in the House — since 2015 — according to a news release from the state House Republicans. It would have made concealed carry legal in schools by default, but it would have allowed school districts to override that or make other school-specific policies regarding carrying guns, according to Joel Malecka, spokesman for the House Republicans.

The bill was introduced Jan. 10, and lawmakers heard testimony during a hearing that lasted more than nine hours Feb. 21 on that and two other gun-related proposals, with testimony charged by the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida. Students from Littleton Public Schools came to the Capitol and gave input to lawmakers on the same day as a walkout at all three LPS high schools regarding policies related to guns and what the response to mass shootings should be.

Though gun-related proposals are heard annually, this year’s testimony was remarkable because of the number of students who spoke, the Democrats’ release said. Students from a number

of different schools, including from Nederland, came to the Capitol, Malecka said. Students, including some from Arapahoe High School, testified.

“If guns are allowed at school, I will stay home,” Elina Asensio, a 12-yearold area student, said to the State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, which considered the House bills.

People testified in support, too, including a former Columbine High student who was at the school during the 1999 shooting, Malecka said.

State Rep. Mike Foote, D-Lafayette, chair of the committee, voiced opposition.

“I have heard these bills for five years now, and I keep coming back to the fundamental idea that it’s absurd to suppose that the way to reduce gun violence is to add more guns to the mix,” Foote said, according to the release.

Malecka said it was about deterring future school shootings.

“Forcing a would-be shooter to consider that they may face opposing force (would help),” said Malecka, adding that creating that uncertainty could stop shootings. “You don’t attack a police station because you know” people are armed inside.

A bill to expand concealed-carry rights in the state Senate is still alive.

But this one would not allow concealed carrying of guns on school grounds.

Senate Bill 18-097, sponsored by Neville’s father, Republican state Sen. Tim Neville of Jefferson County, would allow law-abiding people the right of concealed carry without a permit. It was introduced Jan. 22 and moved forward to the Senate Appropriations Committee, according to a news release

State Rep. Mike Foote D-Lafayette, chair of the committee from Senate Republicans Feb. 15. Both the elder and younger Neville sponsored the House bill.

“The idea behind constitutional carry is that you should be able to carry a concealed handgun without applying for government permission,” Tim Neville said, according to the release.

Another bill stopped in the House on Feb. 21 would have repealed the magazine-limit law passed in 2013, according to the Democrats’ release. It failed on another 6-3 vote.

The proposal, HB18-1015, would have eliminated the limit of 15-round capacity for gun magazines and would have allowed the sale or transfer of highcapacity magazines. It was introduced Jan. 10.

Tom Sullivan, the father of one of the 12 people killed in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, asked sponsors of that bill if they would review the video showing the violence caused by such a magazine in that shooting, the Democrats’ release said.

“July 20, 2012, was a before-and-after moment for my city,” said Rep. Mike

Weissman, D-Aurora, according to the release. “After what we’ve heard from Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan, I think that alone ought to drive a 9-0 vote against this bill.”

A third bill stopped in the House on a 6-3 vote was HB18-1074, which would have extended the right to use deadly force against an intruder under certain conditions to include owners, managers and employees of a business. That was introduced Jan. 16.

Still upcoming for a committee vote is a bill to ban possession, buying and selling of “bump stocks,” or as the proposal would define them, “multi-burst trigger activators.” The bill, SB18-051, defines them as devices that attach to semi-automatic guns and allow them to fire two or more shots in a burst, or a device that increases the rate of fire of a semi-automatic gun. The Las Vegas shooter in October, who killed 58 and injured more than 500, used a bump stock during his attack, authorities said. The bill was introduced Jan. 10 and was scheduled for a committee vote Feb. 26.

Scented Studio is all about enchanting fragrances Englewood store is unusual operation that lets customers choose blends

When Cindy Dassinger Vasilas moved her Scented Studio to 3437 S. Broadway, it made Englewood home to a unique business where staff assists customers to create their own unique fragrance.

“When I decided to make fragrance creation my career, I searched to see if there were similar businesses,” the Centennial resident said. “I found a few businesses but all of them helped customers create fragrances that were used to make specific products like bath oils, perfumes or soap. We offer customers the opportunity to create their own fragrance that can be placed into any of our home, bath and body products.”

She said no formal training was available, and neither were owners of other shops she could ask about setting up and operating the business. So she did an extensive amount of reading and even then, a lot of the lessons were learned by trial and error.

“It is a matter of training the olfactory senses to respond and be open to detecting a wide range of fragrances,” she said. “Basically the primary skill is to have a nose for fragrances.”

People coming into the Scented Studio are greeted by staff members who tell them about the cabinets filled with prepared products.

An individual who wants to create his or her own fragrance then joins a staff member at the oil table, where there are more than 500 fragrant and essential oils to choose from. There are floral oils like rose and orchid, sweet oils like sugars, and clean oils like mountain meadow and rain.

A small amount of a client’s oil choices are placed on small fragrance strips so the person can smell the combinations of scents. When the client decides on his or her fragrance, those oils are used to create the body or bath product or products the customer selects. The cost for using the chosen oil to create a product can range from $19.95 to more than $100.

“I am visiting my daughter, we found this shop and I decided to check it out,” the Dallas resident said. “I really didn’t know what to expect but it was a great experience. The staff was so helpful and I am really pleased that I have now created my own unique fragrance that will be used to make bars of soap.”

She said it was a fun experience that she would recommend to anyone.

Dassinger Vasilas said another option is the workshop. The clients watch a video about how personal fragrances are created. Then they are provided 22 oils and staff members assist them as they pick up to five scents that will be

used to create their unique perfume or cologne. The cost of the workshop is $55 or $75 per person depending on the size of the bottle chosen.

Whether you create a scent with the workshop or at the oil table, all formulas are kept on file for future orders.

“We have also become a popular bachelorette and bridal shower party location,” the owner said. “We feel that the appeal is our services are unique and probably not like other party themes.

Those coming to the party can bring their own refreshments and we play the music they like to enhance the party atmosphere.”

Dassinger Vasilas said one surprise was Scented Studio’s services also appeal to men.

“We thought we probably 20 percent of those who take advantage of our services would be men,” she said. “The surprise is that about 49 percent of our clients are men.”

The Scented Studio opened in Cherry Creek mall area. After six years, their building was scheduled for demolition and the decision was made to move to the Broadway location in Englewood.

The business opened in the new location in May 2017.

“We are glad to be in Englewood and just love it here,” she said. “We were welcomed to Englewood by city officials and other merchants.”

She added that return clients are a big part of the business and getting the word about what the studio does is because it offers a unique service.

Ever since coming to Englewood, she says business has been doing great, especially with booking private parties.

Parents, students, educators rally at state Capitol Group sends message of support for cyberschools, online learning STAFF REPORT

School choice advocates from around the state gathered Feb. 16 at the Colorado Capitol to send a message to state legislators about cyberschools and online learning in Colorado.

Parents, students and educators from the Colorado Coalition of Cyberschool Families say schools of choice are threatened across the country.

“Colorado families are blessed to have abundant school choice options, but we will never take these options for granted,” Tillie Elvrum, a cyberschool parent and president of the coalition, said in a news release. “The Colorado Coalition of Cyberschool

Cyberschools are a critical component to our public school system and must be

preserved, Elvrum said.

“I was excited to join cyberschool families from across Colorado as we celebrate our school choice and the unique role cyberschools play in public education,” Elvrum said.

Cyberschool students include elite athletes, such as snowboarder Arielle Gold,

who wants to gain an education while practicing many hours a day; LGBTQ students who have experienced bullying in traditional classrooms; and students who simply prefer to work at their own pace due to a learning disability or emotional issue.

“Bullying, differing learning styles, and military parents — these are just a few reasons why families choose online schooling for their children,” said Emerald Zeitz, a cyberschool parent and board member of the coalition. “My daughter lives with Asperger’s syndrome and the typical public school setting was simply not equipped to deal with her differences. With online schooling, my daughter embraces her differences without fear of being bullied as her grades, knowledge, and confidence soar.”

At the rally, the coalition honored four state legislators with Golden Apple Awards, which recognized

legislators who have shown a commitment to school choice.

This year’s honorees were Sen. Rachel Zenzinger (DJefferson County), Sen. Bob Gardner (R-El Paso County), Rep. Brittany Pettersen (DJefferson County), and House Minority Leader Patrick Neville (R-Douglas County).

Four cyberschool students also shared their personal experiences and successes with cyberschooling at the rally.

This was Colorado Coalition of Cyberschool Families’ 14th annual Day at the Capitol.

The Colorado Coalition of Cyberschool Families is a group of parents who have united to be vocal advocates for cyberschools and online learning in Colorado. The coalition believes that all children should have free and equal access to public online schools without restrictions.
