Proposed map launches redistricting process 1st Congressional District would become smaller and include only Denver under preliminary plan

Colorado’s new, eighth congressional district would include the cities of Arvada, Westminster, Broomfield, Thornton, Brighton and Platteville, a preliminary map drawn by nonpartisan redistricting staff and presented to the state’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission on June 23 shows.

Staff placed the new district in the north Denver metro area for two reasons, said Jeremiah Barry, a legislative attorney advising the redistricting commissions.

“The first reason was we recognize this was the fastest-growing area of the state,” said Barry. “The second was a recognition that although nearly 30% of the population of the state are Hispanics, none of the current seven districts are represented by a Hispanic.”

The map is a major first step in the state’s once-a-decade redistricting process. It will evolve as the commission gets input from the public and interest groups over the next few months.

tricting staff will have to adjust the map.

“It’s the starting line, but nowhere near the finish line,” Curtis Hubbard, a Democratic political consultant who is registered to lobby the redistricting commissions, said of the preliminary map.

The initial map, the public’s first glimpse at how the 8th District may affect the state’s political landscape, also makes changes to the state’s existing seven congressional districts.

The 3rd District, represented by Garfield County Republican Lauren Boebert, would gain Eagle, Summit, Grand, Park, Teller and Fremont counties, as well as some of western Boulder County. The San Luis Valley and Pueblo County would be dropped and added to the 4th District, which includes northeast and southeast Colorado and is currently represented by U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Windsor.

The 5th District, currently represented by U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Springs Republican, would contract to include only parts of El Paso County. Southeastern El Paso County and counties in the western part of the district would be drawn into other districts.

The 7th District, centered in Jefferson County and currently represented

by U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, an Arvada Democrat, would shift south to include Castle Rock, dropping some of Denver’s northwest suburbs, including the Perlmutter bulk of Arvada.

Perlmutter, however, would remain in the 7th District under the preliminary map, though only narrowly — by about 50 yards.

The new 7th District looks to be the most competitive of the new map. In 2018, the Republican candidate won the attorney general’s contest in the new proposed district by 3 percentage points, though a

Democrat won the statewide vote.

The 1st District, represented now

by U.S. Rep. Diana Degette, a Denver Democrat, would encompass only Denver, dropping portions of Arapahoe and Jefferson counties.

The 6th District, represented by U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, a Centennial Democrat, would lose some of its northern half while continuing to include Aurora, Centennial and Littleton. Both of those districts went heavily Democratic in the 2018 attorney general contest, and, along with the 2nd District in Boulder and Larimer counties, are considered safe seats for that party.

Nonpartisan staff used the results of the 2018 attorney general contest, the closest statewide race in a recent, nonpresidential election year, as well as voter registration figures to measure political competitiveness of the redrawn districts.

Based on results of the attorney general race, Districts 1 and 2 would be solidly Democratic while Districts 4 and 5 would be solidly Republican.

Republicans would have an advantage of nearly 10 percentage points in the 3rd District and 3 percentage points in the 7th District, while Democrats would hold a 12.7 percentage point advantage in the 6th District and 7.3 percentage point advantage in the 8th District.

Colorado Democratic Party Chairwoman Morgan Carroll said she was disappointed by the map, arguing the proposed districts advantage the GOP. “While this preliminary plan seems to put a thumb on the scale for Republicans, it is too soon to know how the commissioners will change them,” she said in a statement.

created the independent commissions, also weighed in after the release of the preliminary map.

“These congressional seats belong to the people, not to a political party or interest,” said Thiry. “It’s still early in the process, but it appears the commission is responding to the mandate that it draw competitive districts whenever and wherever possible.”

Redistricting staff also isn’t convinced voter registration and outcomes from the 2018 attorney general race are the best metrics, Barry said.

“Given the population distribution in Colorado, it is difficult to draw more competitive districts,” Barry said. “When the final data comes out from the Census Bureau, it likely will change, and maybe districts will become more competitive.”

Maximizing political competitiveness also wasn’t a high priority for this draft map, Barry said, as staff is required to meet all the other constitutional requirements first.

Those constitutional requirements include equal population and adherence to the federal Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters from gerrymandering.

The map creates three districts with Hispanic populations of more than 28%: District 1 with 28.6%, District 4 with 31% and District 8 with 29.9%, according to the preliminary data.

Staff also sought to keep rural areas together as much as pos-

sible, keep the San Luis Valley in one district and keep Boulder and Fort Collins together “due to the large research institutions in those towns,” Barry said.

Focus on political boundaries Staff also prioritized keeping entire counties and other political boundaries together over specific “communities of interest,” a term used to describe communities with shared needs and interests. Barry said staff had difficulty identifying the geography of some communities named by members of the public.

“In this plan, of the 64 counties in the state, 55 are wholly contained within one congressional district,” Barry said.

Staff also acknowledged that comments from certain interest groups influenced their proposal, including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which pushed for a district capturing concentrated Hispanic populations in north metro Denver, and Club 20, which called for keeping the entire Western Slope in the same district.

Colorado’s population grew 14.5% from 2010 to 2020, making it one of six states that will get one or more new congressional seats in 2022 due to population gains.

Colorado’s seven existing congressional districts are currently represented by four Democrats and three Republicans.

The map is nonpartisan legislative staff’s initial effort at redrawing the congressional districts, under a 2018 constitutional amendment — Amendment Y — approved by voters.

This year marks the first time

independent commissions created

by Amendment Y and a companion ballot question, Amendment Z, are overseeing the once-a-decade redistricting process in Colorado.

In the past, state lawmakers drew the congressional lines, though they often deadlocked and courts decided on the final districts.

State Sen. Faith Winter, a Westminster Democrat, released a statement after the preliminary map was unveiled appearing to express interest in running for the new seat.

“It’s no surprise to see the initial redistricting map center on Adams County for the new CD8,” Winter wrote. “Not only does this help keep cities and school districts whole, it captures diverse communities of interest and creates a district focused on working-class families.

This district deserves solutions and federal legislation that could provide action on water, climate change, transportation, economic opportunities and growth. These are the issues that have been top of mind for my constituents in (state Senate District 24).”

Colorado’s Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission was to release initial state Senate and state House district maps June 29.

Both commissions will hold 32 public hearings around the state between July 9 and late August to get feedback on the preliminary maps.

Official census results coming Once nonpartisan legislative staff gets the official 2020 Census data on Aug. 16, they will use feedback from the public hearings, as well as comments submitted to the commissions online, to draw a new set

of maps. Another set of hearings will be held in each of the state’s seven congressional districts on the updated district maps.

It’s not clear how different the final population data will be from the estimates used for this preliminary map.

This year, the Census Bureau is also using a new statistical method for ensuring privacy that would have the largest impact on redistricting at the hyperlocal level.

Differential privacy injects random errors into the data to make it harder to identify individuals in small communities. Several states are against its use because it also makes data on small geographic levels, like a single census block, less accurate.

Because it’s the first time the agency has used the privacy method, staff say they don’t know what impact it will have until they have the data in hand.

Members of the commissions may recommend changes to the maps as well. The commissioners also aren’t required to adopt the staff’s maps.

“They can choose a map that was drawn by someone completely away from staff or by a commissioner themselves,” Barry said.

The Colorado Supreme Court must ultimately approve the maps submitted by the two commissions before the end of the year, setting the stage for the 2022 election.

Local author looks at Denver’s lost buildings in latest book

Local author Phil Goodstein believes that many Denverites like the city because of its diversity.

“Denver is our residence,” Goodstein said. “We had to care for it as we care for our home. By grasping the nature of the city, locals can better understand it and shape it to fit their needs, wants and aspirations.”

Goodstein, who is a Denver native and resides in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, has been writing and getting his work published since the 1970s. His first book about Denver came out in 1984, and today, Goodstein is the author of more than 25 books about Denver, including, “Denver Civic Center: The Heart of the Mile High City” and “Spirits of South Broadway.”

His latest book, “The Denver that Is No More: The Story of the City’s Demolished Landmarks,” came out in May. The book is about 330 pages, and is well-illustrated with photographs of lost buildings — and some then-and-now comparisons.

Goodstein hopes readers are able to get a grasp of the city’s past, he said.

“We then have a better understanding of the present,” Goodstein said. “And when we understand the present, we then have the ability to shape the city into something we want — rather than being the victim of something shaped by outside sources.”

Q&A with Phil Goodstein, author of “The Denver that Is No More: The Story of the City’s Demolished Landmarks” What makes Denver an interesting topic for you to write about?

Beneath the gloss of a rather sterile, sports and marijuana-dominated city, is a community that is a microcosm of urban America. It reflects what the country’s experience has been all about since its founding around the time of the Civil War. Given my location in the Mile High City, it has the best resources for me to focus upon in trying to understand the American and human experience.

Why do you think local readers enjoy learning and reading about Denver?

While transients are satisfied in staying in sterile, virtually identical hotel rooms as they come and go, life is more than simply a job.

An appreciation of a neighborhood, architecture, scandal and a sense of location give meaning to the lives of those who have grown up in Denver, in addition to those who have chosen to call it their home.

What inspired you to write “The Denver That Is No More?”

The book is something of a summary of my previous writings about distinctive Denver neighborhoods.

It is also a capsule history of the community. Remembering what we have lost allows us to treasure what remains, and act to assure that we leave behind a fruitful heritage.

Lakewood’s Masterpiece Cakeshop is back in the news — this time, for refusing to make a cake for transgender attorney Autumn Scardina.

In the case, Denver District Court Judge A. Bruce Jones ruled last week that the cake shop violated Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA) by refusing to bake a blue and pink birthday cake Scardina ordered to celebrate her transition from male to female.

Scardina attempted to order the birthday cake the same day in 2017 that the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would hear Masterpiece Cakeshop’s owner Jack Phillips’ appeal in a different case in which he was sanctioned by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission for refusing to make a wedding cake for same-sex couple Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins in 2012.

In 2018, Phillips partially prevailed in that case when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed anti-religious bias when it sanctioned him for refusing to make the samesex wedding cake.

The Scardina case was conducted virtually in March 2021. During the hearing, Scardina said Phillips had maintained that, as a Christian, he

opposed making the same-sex wedding cake in 2012 because it involved a religious ceremony but would sell any other type of product.

Scardina said she called Masterpiece Cakeshop to place her order for the transgender birthday cake as a way to call Phillips’ bluff.

In his decision, Jones reasoned that baking and decorating the requested style of cake was not a form of compelled speech. Therefore, the cake shop, and the cake decorator do not have a valid First Amendment claim that outweighs CADA’s anti-discrimination provisions. He also stated the average person would perceive the message presented by the cake to be Scardina’s, not that of the cake decorator.

“The anti-discrimination laws are intended to ensure that members of our society who have historically been treated unfairly, who have been deprived of even the every-day right to access businesses to buy products, are no longer treated as ‘others,’” the judge wrote. “This case is about one such product — a pink and blue birthday cake — and not compelled speech.”

Jones ordered Masterpiece Cakeshop to pay Scardina $500 — the largest fine the statute allows, for refusing to make her cake as requested.

The newspaper contacted Phillips for comment. He declined but provided contact information for his attorney to make arrangements for an interview. At press time, an interview has not been scheduled.

Not me. I can cry on a cloudless day. How QUIET about you?

“It must be rain- DESPERATION drops,” Dee Clark said, “it can’t be teardrops, for a man ain’t supposed to cry.”

Ah, but Roy Orbison was closer to the truth: “It’s hard to understand, but the Craig Marshall touch of your hand, can start me Smith crying.”

Raise your hand if you cry.

I cry, and Harry wonders why, when I watch old movies.

Take my challenge: watch “City Lights” and be sure to stick around for the ending, one of the most famous in cinema history.

It’s one of Charlie Chaplin’s best films. The flower girl was played

by Virginia Cherrill, whom Chaplin fired after filming began, then rehired when he realized she was the one.

I’ll cry if I watch one of those manipulative videos on YouTube that shows a dog being reunited with its family.

The first time I watched highlights of his basketball game ending heroics in 2006 it was Niagara Falls.

The headline read, “Autistic basketball player Jason McElwain has game of his life.”

He came in off the bench, and, well, what happened looked staged. See for yourself.

Homemade movies, especially of my father, do it to me too. I don’t have very many of them but they work.

My father and mother died at about the time I bought my first digital camera, so the majority of

existing photographs of the Smith family are the printed kind.

There’s one of my father sitting in the stands at a University of Michigan football game with people all around him. But his light-colored hat and coat, and steady gaze and smile at his son who is taking the picture make it look like a competent cinematographer knew how to key on the star.

C.S. Lewis said, “Crying is all right in its way while it lasts. But you have to stop sooner or later, and then you still have to decide what to do.”

My mother cried; my father rarely. They balanced each other in a crisis.

She showed genuine human emotion, but was incapable of solving the problem.

Dad remained calm and solved the problem.

Four keys to achieving maximum results

D

uring a recent webinar I participated in, one of the other guests talked about having a passion for success, a passion WINNING for winning, and even a passion for WORDS losing. When we succeed and as we win, it becomes very easy to follow the philosophy of “Success begets success,” and “Winning begets winning.”

What about when Michael Norton we lose, or don’t experience the results we are looking for? Is it possible or realistic to have the same level of passion?

Does “Losing beget losing?” The answer to both questions is yes.

No one likes to lose, but everyone can learn from losing. And this is where the passion comes in, making it possible for us to see what we could have done better or differently. And when we can tap into our enthusiasm for learning from failing, it becomes much easier to find the passion for losing. Even becoming so passionate about

losing that we will try new and different things so that we do not fail again in the same way.

Unfortunately, sometimes losing does beget losing. However, this only happens when we fail to take something away from the loss. If we simply accept defeat and keep doing the same behaviors repeatedly, we will continue to lose.

Now when it comes to maximizing results, there are four qualities that I have seen top performers focus on in their pursuit and achievement of success. These qualities include passion, hope, motivation and action.

Living and working with passion is invaluable. Passion excites us.

Passion involves us. Passion connects us mentally, physically, and spiritually. Passion is the secret super-ingredient of success and the realization of desired results.

No matter what we do, regardless of where we are in life, whether we are just starting out, in the middle of our life or career, or winding down and enjoying our sunset years, if we maintain our passion for what we have done and what we are currently doing, it will make the difference in our outcomes.

Hope is the great activator. Sometimes hope is born out of anger or frustration. We are tired of losing or not seeing the results we have been seeking, or we are not seeing progress fast enough. We get so angry or frustrated that we become hopeful. And when we have hope we begin to see the world through a different lens. We see our personal and professional goals and objectives as something we can not only achieve but exceed. With passion-driven hope, our possibilities are endless.

When we find that spark of passion and infuse it with hope, our motivation begins to kick in. We are motivated to make changes that may be needed, attempt things that we used to fear, and look at the obstacles ahead of us as nothing more than the smallest of hills to climb. There are three kinds of motivation; fear; incentive; and growth. And it’s OK to derive our motivation from any one of these.

However, fear-based and incentivebased motivation is only temporary, whereas growth-based motivation is longer lasting.

place. Passion, hope, and motivation may sound fluffy to you, maybe even too soft. Perhaps they are, and that’s OK because they work, or at least they work when we couple them with action. It doesn’t matter how passionate, hopeful, or motivated that we are, if we do not turn those into action, it is really just fluff. Acting means that we move from thinking about doing something, to doing it. Acting means that we are willing to take the first step toward our goals and dreams, knowing that steps two, three and four will follow.

Author hopes to heal pain sufferers who are 50-plus

A leading Denver physical therapist wants to make a difference in peoples’ lives.

Brooke Olsen, a resident of Washington Park, with contributor Annie Brodsky, recently released her first book called “Aging Happily Without Pain.”

Both Olsen and Brodsky have doctorates in physical therapy. The two opened their clinic, The Physio Revolution at 1224 S. Acoma St. in Denver’s Overland neighborhood, in 2017.

“With nearly two decades of accumulated experience, we both have seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to medical care,” Olsen said. “We saw so many people were struggling more and not getting real solutions to put an end to their pain or regain confidence back in their bodies.

We want people to know what is possible and how amazing the body is at healing itself when given the right environment.”

The book is about 215 pages and can serve as “an instruction manual for all pain sufferers on what to do to transform your life from one of inactivity to one full of hope, family outings, walks and hikes in the park and returning to your old self,” Olsen said.

Q&A with Brooke Olsen, author of “Aging Happily Without Pain” What inspired you to write “Aging Happily Without Pain?”

When lockdown happened, we quickly worked out that more people would be struggling in pain and needing more help — just simply because of routine changes

and closures including gyms, pools and classes. We knew the book would continue to impact so many who are still struggling today and help them find ways to get back to a life that’s more normal, active and worthwhile.

What is your target audience for the book and why?

“Aging Happily Without Pain” is for those who are 50+ who are tired of struggling in pain and have tried nearly everything unsuccessfully in the past to help themselves. It’s perfect for the person who deeply desires to get out of pain, naturally and without harmful methods. And it’s for the person who needs a new customized approach — something radically different — that gives them more hope in their situation.

In what ways do you feel readers will benefit from the book?

Simply put: hope for their future as they age. Aging doesn’t have to be a grim, painful experience where you slow down. It can be joyful, exciting and full of activity and adventures. And it doesn’t have to require pills, injections or surgery to do this.

Readers will learn secrets to fix pain and avoid slowing down after 50, without harmful or unnatural methods. There’s a little bit of everything in this book — from back pain, knee pain, headaches, neck and shoulder pain to more of the holistic, natural approaches we use to help people every single day. It’s about helping people age 50+ make better decisions about their health and empowering them to stay active and avoid slowing down, even if it’s been months or years of pain.

‘Communal experience’ of movie theaters returns

With theaters open and without government limits, struggling industry gets reprieve

A

fter long stretches of staying closed amid the coronavirus pandemic, the nation’s major movie theater chains reopened locations in recent months.

And with capacity restrictions on businesses now lifted around the Denver metro area, the traditional moviegoing experience appears to be on its way to a full return.

It’s a change that could help people’s “reintegration” into socializing, said Vincent Piturro, a professor of film and media studies at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“If you haven’t seen friends in a year and a half: ‘Hey, let’s see a movie.’ It’s a sort of a soft landing for socialization,” Piturro said.

The Regal and Cinemark theater chains have reopened locations in Colorado, and nearly all of AMC’s Denver-area theatres reopened at the end of 2020 or in the first few weeks of this year. Those AMC theaters had closed in March 2020.

“I believe most or all reopened for a period of time in the summer and fall of 2020 and then closed again in accordance with local directives,” said Ryan Noonan, a spokesperson for AMC Theatres.

As of May 16 this year, several Denver metro counties are now operating in what they call “level clear,” generally with no local restrictions — and that’s likely to continue unless things take a turn for the worse.

Some counties, such as Douglas, had already been living under no local restrictions.

AMC theater capacities are still slightly reduced, with ticketing systems blocking the spots on either side of a party’s seating — but aside from that small precaution, the theaters may remind crowds of how moviegoing felt before the pandemic.

Seeing movies again may serve as a “boon to our psyches” on the way to returning to normalcy, Piturro said.

“We’ve gone to movies our whole lives — we may not have gone to bars our whole lives or certain restaurants our whole lives,” but movies were a constant presence, Piturro said.

‘You can’t duplicate that at home’ The return of in-person movies comes as a relief to an industry that took a big hit amid the pandemic, but it doesn’t mean theaters’ troubles are over.

“It’s one of those things where we have to step back and ask ourselves: How was the industry doing prior to the pandemic?” said Darrin DuberSmith, an expert on marketing at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

and Disney+, had served as competition for theaters long before the pandemic, Piturro said. Theater attendance was declining for several years before COVID-19, Piturro and Duber-Smith pointed out.

Fighting to adapt, theaters have made changes in recent years such

as adding more-comfortable chairs and serving alcohol and higherend food — trying to “increase the luxury,” Duber-Smith said.

Public health officials strongly encourage anyone who is not fully vaccinated to wear a mask in indoor public settings and to avoid large gatherings.

Generally, indoor settings pose a higher COVID-19 risk than outdoor settings, particularly when social distancing is difficult and when customers are inside for extended periods of time, said the Colorado State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the risks of certain activities depending on whether individuals are vaccinated.

For unvaccinated individuals, movie theaters are considered one of the riskier activities.

Asked if a person can catch COVID-19 from sharing popcorn, candy or drinks at a theater, the joint information center said: “COVID-19 spreads primarily through respiratory droplets, but it’s possible someone could touch a surface or food item that has the virus on it, and then touch their own mouth, nose or eyes.

“We do not believe COVID-19 commonly spreads this way, but we would recommend that unvaccinated individuals get their own food and beverage servings,” the center said.

Coloradans ages 12 and older can get vaccinated, and more than 1,400 vaccine providers are located across the state, according to the center.

The state’s COVID-19 website provides recommendations for COVID-19 safety for indoor event settings, which include movie theaters. The advice is not part of a public health order but illustrates “best practices,” the joint information center said. It’s located at covid19.colorado. gov/indoor-events.

private theater rentals, said Noonan, the AMC spokesperson. That’s a program that allows customers to reserve an entire auditorium for a private party of up to 20 people.

“The moviegoing experience is just that: It’s an experience. It’s going out.

It’s an event. You can’t duplicate that at home,” Piturro said, pointing to the “oohs and ahhs” and “the communal experience.”

‘Will they go out?’

In the long term, though, the pandemic may serve as “a nail in the coffin” for the theater industry in its current form, Duber-Smith said.

Amid changing consumer habits, he’s expecting a “bailout,” where movie-production companies will “vertically integrate” by buying out theaters, keeping them running so movie producers can still profit from them.

“Is (the industry) going to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels? I don’t think so,” Duber-Smith said, adding that even the pre-pandemic level of activity wasn’t adequate.

Piturro, the film professor, takes a more optimistic view, arguing that movies aren’t going to have to compete with online services

but, rather, will compete with other forms of in-person entertainment such as baseball games or the opera.

“I see younger crowds (likely) going to the movies in record numbers and the older crowd, without kids, going back to the theaters as well, especially whose kids have left the home,” Piturro said. “The wild-card is the middle-age demographic: those with kids at home.

Will they go out to the movies? They were the group that stayed home in bigger numbers in the pre-COVID years. This is the group that we are unsure about, and this is the group that other entertainment venues will vie for.

“Still, either way, I see a positive trend in moviegoing in the near future,” Piturro said, noting that “the longterm prospects are a bit cloudier.”

Piturro envisions theater crowds having a “spillover effect,” bringing more patrons to nearby bars and restaurants before or after they attend a movie.

“I think that’s healthy for the overall economy,” Piturro said.

Duber-Smith expressed skepticism about whether increased numbers of theater patrons will help shopping centers to rebound, though. He expects the theater industry itself to shrink although some theaters may expand.

“Overall, I think you’re going to see a reduction in the number of movie theaters,” Duber-Smith said.

People won’t fully return to movie theaters in the next few months, Piturro expects.

102-year-old World War II vet receives medals in ceremony Flaherty served as a medic in the Pacific theater

Time is running out. With less than 2% of America’s World War II veterans still living — and the youngest of those that remain now well into their 90s — there just won’t be much time left to right past wrongs when it comes to properly honoring those who fought for America in the deadliest war in world history.

So on June 18 Congressman Ed Perlmutter and retired Major General Steven Best took the opportunity to do just that by awarding Reverend Edward Flaherty, Jr. with five medals he had earned as a result of his heroic service during the war, 76 years after the fact.

Flaherty spent four years in the Army, where he served mainly as a medic in the Pacific theater who played what Perlmutter described as “a critical role in treating his fellow soldiers wounds and injuries while assisting with evacuations of casualties.”

Perlmutter said members of his office began looking into Flaherty after a priest who knows Flaherty contacted a Denver city councilman about recognizing Flaherty. The councilman then reached out to Perlmutter’s office.

“We found that you were entitled to a number of different medals that you never received when you left the war in 1945,” said Perlmutter. “And so it is our pleasure to be able to recognize you today for the service you provided.”

The five medals Flaherty received included the Good Conduct medal, which is awarded for “exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity.” He also received the honorable service lapel button, which was awarded to soldiers who were honorably discharged at the end of the war, and a

medal awarded by the Philippines who played a role in the nation’s liberation from the Japanese, as well as a flag that was flown over the US Capitol.

Flaherty, who learned that the ceremony would be taking place only moments before those in attendance began to arrive, expressed appreciation for the ceremony even as he joked that he “would’ve fled to the mountains” if he had known it was coming.

“All I can say is thank you for all of these commendations, most of

which I don’t feel worthy of accepting but I do appreciate it,” he said.

“I hope that spirit that invigorated us in World War II, Korea and so on will be passed to the younger generation today.”

He then went on to bemoan what he described as “the explosion of violence and hatred and venom” that characterizes a significant portion of the country.

“I think most of the trouble today is simply that people don’t know what life is all about,” he said.

“We’re inundated with so many material things that they overlook seeing the prime goal of every single human, namely God. He created all of us himself and that’s where we’re all headed, whether we like it or not.”

In his remarks, Best, who regularly helps honor veterans at such ceremonies, said honoring Flaherty was particularly special because he continued to serve his country even after taking his uniform off by serving as pastor, teacher and the chaplain for Lowry Air Force base.

Flaherty, who is 102, currently lives at the Xavier Jesuit Center near Regis University and the border of Denver and Jefferson County but will soon be heading to St. Louis, a move which added additional urgency to the ceremony.

“He has been just a quiet force in our community for a very long time,” said Perlmutter. “And so it is a great pleasure and privilege to be able to participate in today’s ceremony.”
