Meet the Douglas County ‘10-foot cop’ Mounted deputies help with search and rescue and special events

Unbeknownst to some in Douglas County, there is a special type of deputy in the ranks at the sheriff ’s office. It’s one with a long, soft nose, giant ears and four clomping hooves: It’s a horse deputy.

These horses, just like their owners, are sworn in and given badges following extensive training, teaching them the latest techniques and procedures.

And if a civilian decides to strike either one of them, it’s a felony.

These animals and their riders make up the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office mounted patrol unit.

While the deputies are trained in search and rescue and crowd control tactics, their main duties include attending special events like parades and interacting with the public.

The mounted patrol is made up of seven deputies, the largest group since the unit began in 2006, said Lt. Robert Rotherham, the commander of the unit. Each deputy is only a mounted deputy part of the time. Outside of that they have regular duties in units such as patrol, investigative or detentions.

Before a new deputy can join, they must first own a horse and pass a training ride to test for their animal’s disposition.

“We ride through a King Soopers parking lot,” Rotherham said. “If the horse is flighty, no way he’s ever going to be on a team.”

If the horse passes, it will attend a week-long training made up of obstacles, crowd control simulations and more before beginning duties.

Every month after, the horses undergo additional training around the county. In the past these exercises have included traffic control at a high school, patrolling areas with increased vandalism and mountain patrol rides.

riage parade, The National Western Parade on Jan. 9 and the July 4 parade in Highlands Ranch. The biggest event of the year is the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo in August.

“Over the years, the team has really expanded its events,” Rotherham said.

The mounted patrol unit walks in a Fourth of July parade in 2017. unit will get a search and rescue call about a missing hiker or child in the backcountry. That’s when they head out on horseback to search through terrain that ATVs can’t reach.

The unit has also used crowd control techniques during the 2008 Democratic National Convention when Barack Obama accepted the democratic nomination. This is when it’s convenient to be a “10-foot cop,” Rotherham said.

said. “One mounted deputy is equal to 10 deputies on the ground.”

On the horses, it’s much easier to push through a crowd or split up clashing protesters, he said. This skill isn’t needed much in their regular duties, however.

“We don’t have a lot of the big protests in Douglas County,” Rotherham said.

Mostly, the horses help foster a positive relationship with the community.

“Everybody likes animals,” he said.

U.S. Rep. Buck stands firmly in support of Trump

Among the Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives opposed to the impeachment of President Donald Trump is Colorado’s Ken Buck.

The House voted Dec. 18 to approve two articles of impeachment, and Trump will next face trial in the U.S. Senate. The decision came after hours of fiery debate on the House floor.

Democratic leadership said evidence for impeachment was clear and they had no choice but to impeach Trump.

Republicans countered with seething criticism, decrying the impeachment inquiry as politically motivated.

Buck, R-Windsor, chairs the Colorado Republican Party and sits on the House Judiciary Committee. He represents the 4th Congressional District, which includes Castle Rock, Lone Tree, Parker, Elbert County and much of Colorado’s Eastern Plains.

The congressman voted against both articles of impeachment.

Buck has been a staunch critic of the impeachment inquiry and the resulting impeachment articles.

Buck said during debate on Dec. 18.

In his speech, Buck pointed toward opportunties to impeach Democratic presidents that he said Republicans could have seized under the standard used to impeach Trump but didn’t.

He named Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Barack Obama as presidents who also abused their power of office and “underminded democracy.”

“Republicans did not impeach. Why? Because the framers did not want a low bar for impeachment. They wanted ConBuck gress and the president to work out their differences,” he said.

The House Judiciary Committee approved the two articles of impeachment in a 23-17 vote on Dec. 13, sending them on to the full-House vote on Dec. 18, which fell largely along party lines. In hours of floor speeches before the vote, numerous Republicans said there was no evidence Trump committed a crime, that Democrats were leading the impeachment inquiry because they personally disliked Trump and that Democrats had worked toward impeachment throughout Trump’s presidency.

The first article states Trump used his powers of office to pressure a foreign power into investigating his political opponents and therefore interfere in the next presidential election. “He

did so through a scheme or course of conduct that included soliciting the government of Ukraine to publicly announce investigations that would benefit his reelection, harm the election prospects of a political opponent (former Vice President Joe Biden) and influence the 2020 United States presidential election to his advantage,” the article reads.

The document further states Trump withheld taxpayer dollars already appropriated by Congress for military aid to Ukraine, and, a head of state meeting at the White House sought by the Ukrainian president.

“Faced with the public revelation of his actions, President Trump ultimately released the military and security assistance to the government of Ukraine, but has persisted in openly and corruptly urging and soliciting Ukraine to undertake investigations for his personal political benefit,” the article says.

The second article states Trump obstructed a congressional impeachment inquiry by directing executive branch agencies and staff to resist its subpoenas. Trump ordered the White House and executive branch agencies to withhold documents requested in the subpoenas, the article says, and directed current and former staff not to cooperate with committees during the impeachment inquiry.

inquiry or sought to obstruct and impede so comprehensively the ability of the House of Representatives to investigate ‘high crimes and misdemeanors,’” the document states.

Buck was vocal on Twitter as impeachment hearings filled the days leading up to the House’s vote. On Dec. 11, he said Democrats had “prejudged this case” and ignored Trump’s right to executive privilege. The following day, he said Trump put America first by “ensuring U.S. taxpayer dollars weren’t funding Ukrainian corruption.” Trump had not committed any crimes, he said.

“It’s time to accept the results of the 2016 election,” Buck wrote.

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, presided over the impeachment debate and served as speaker pro tempore.

She issued a statement following the vote, saying Trump put his personal interests before the country’s needs and attempted to cover up his alleged misconduct. Trump’s actions risked the United States’ national security and undermined the integrity of U.S. elections, she said.

“No one in this country is above the law; and President Trump, by his own actions, left us no choice but to approve the articles of impeachment against him today,” she said.

DNA from beer mugs led to suspect’s arrest

James Clanton charged with the 1980 murder of Helene Pruszynski

She moved to Colorado in 1980 with hopes of pursuing her career in journalism. She had “a bright future ahead of her,” family said.

Then, Helene Pruszynski’s life ended abruptly, and shrouded in mystery.

Pruszynski On January 16, 1980, the 21-year-old was kidnapped, raped and discarded in a Douglas County field, suffering multiple stab wounds.

Now, the man suspected of her murder is moving through the court system.

Clanton Authorities on Dec. 11 arrested James Curtis Clanton, 62, near his home in Florida on felony charges for Pruszynski’s murder. Clanton appeared in court for the first time on Dec. 16.

Earlier that morning, Douglas

County Sheriff Tony Spurlock and 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler joined the team that investigated Clanton for a news conference announcing his arrest.

The group of law enforcement, genealogists, and civilian volunteers found him through “dogged, old-school” police work paired with technological advancements in the world of genealogy, Brauchler said.

The sheriff ’s office on Twitter shared a statement from Pruszynski’s closest living relative, her sister Janet Johnson, who has asked for privacy.

“I want people to know what a special person Helene was. My sister was my best friend,” she said.

A break in the case An arrest affidavit for Clanton details how investigators found him and obtained evidence needed to connect him with the crime. Extensive genealogical research conducted by detectives, includng Detective Shannon Jensen of the sheriff ’s office, with the help of private genealogy companies pointed them to Clanton.

Douglas County detectives traveled to Lake Butler, Florida, in November with the mission to surveil him and wait for opportunities to collect his DNA. Their opportunity came six days in when Clanton visited a bar. One of the detectives fol-

lowed him inside where he watched Clanton order several beers, pouring each into a mug. With the help of the bar owner, officers obtained three mugs before they were washed, one of which they knew was Clanton’s.

Testing of the mugs in Colorado confirmed Clanton’s DNA was a match for the DNA collected from Pruszynski’s murder scene nearly 40 years earlier, authorities say.

He now sits in the Douglas County jail without bond, facing five charges, four on suspicion of murder and one for kidnapping. Three of the murder charges are predicated on other suspected crimes, including sexual assault and robbery.

Clanton walked into the Douglas County courtroom on Dec. 16 shackled and dressed in a white and orange jumpsuit, his hair grown past his shoulders. He peered around him as he sat down, speaking briefly with Public Defender Ara Ohanian as the hearing began.

Clanton nodded his head and answered District Court Judge Theresa Slade’s questions in a hushed, nearly inaudible voice, and otherwise sat calmly throughout the hearing.

Genealogy leads to suspect Pruszynski moved to Colorado from her home in Massachusetts two weeks before her death for an internship with KHOW radio station.

When Pruszynski didn’t come home as expected on Jan. 16, 1980, Pruszynski’s aunt filed a missing person report with Englewood police.

“During the weeks leading up to the disappearance of Ms. Pruszynski, Englewood had experienced a series of sexual assaults in the area for which it is believed Ms. Pruszynksi disappeared,” the affidavit said.

Englewood police began investigating whether her disappearance was linked to those cases.

Her body was found the next day when a Douglas County woman was driving her three children along Daniels Park Road. One of the children saw a body from the vehicle.

The woman stopped a road grader operator. The man confirmed there was a woman’s body in the field and called the sheriff ’s office.

The victim was nude from her waist down, her hands bound behind her back. Douglas County Coroner John Andrews would later identify her as Pruszynski.

A forensic pathologist determined the 21-year-old had been sexually assaulted. Her attacker’s semen remained on her body and clothing.

She was stabbed in the back until her lungs collapsed, eventually dying of substantial blood loss.

Castle Pines ice rink planned to accommodate disabilities Hockey teams around county hope proposal can bring a facility closer to home

As of today, the Douglas County School District’s three hockey programs grapple to reserve an hour to practice at ice rinks located miles away. Ice time is competitive in the Denver metro area and beyond, said the district’s Athletic Director Derek Chaney, as high school teams, club teams and adult teams alike all try to book time slots.

Douglas County does not have any indoor ice rinks open today. A South Suburban Parks and Recreation recreational facility with three ice sheets is under construction in Douglas County at East County Line Road and South Holly Street.

Douglas County high school teams presently travel to rinks in Monument and Denver to play and practice.

With limited rink availability, players might practice only two to three times a week, far less when compared to other athletic programs, Chaney said. Sometimes, games aren’t held until 8:45 p.m., preferably on Fridays or Saturdays so athletes aren’t kept up

on school nights.

That’s why Chaney was thrilled to hear DAWG Nation, a Littleton-based nonprofit that assists hockey families in times of need, plans to build a $38 million, three-sheet ice rink in Castle Pines. The nonprofit hopes shovels can hit the ground by January 2021.

“To have a facility that’s three sheets of ice in central Douglas County, my goodness, we would be ecstatic,” Chaney said. “I cannot tell you how fantastic it would be.”

DAWG Nation President Martin Richardson said they plan for all three rinks in the building to be designed for able-bodied and disabled players to better support youth and adult hockey programs in the area.

“We’re trying to solve several problems all at the same time,” he said.

They intend to offer the rink to hockey programs, figure skating, open skate times for the public and for large hockey tournaments. In addition to hosting local programs, they also aim to attract national and international hockey competitions. An event that size might draw up to or more than 1,000 players, Richardson said.

DAWG Nation Executive Director Mike Freeman said a rink designed for disabled players, such as blind athletes or sledding hockey teams, makes a huge difference in their ability to safely get ready in the locker room, get on and off the ice and watch the game from the bench.

not a step up into the bench area when players get off the ice, which hinders disabled players. Adapting a rink after it’s built to accommodate all players can be cost-prohibitive, he said.

“All those changes really create a world-class environment for the sled hockey player and the blind hockey player without impacting any other groups,” Freeman said.

The foundation has begun fundraising to build the facility.

“The idea is to now build a hockey rink through the use of donations and grants and naming rights and also in-kind donations,” Richardson said.

“The model is to design and build this at almost no cost.”

About 20 companies have stepped up so far. Richardson expects roughly 100 companies will contribute in some way by the time fundraising ends.

Once the rink is built, it should generate annual income that DAWG Nation plans to put back toward its mission of helping hockey families in need, he said.

The City of Castle Pines donated 10-acres of city land located on the east side of Interstate 25 and Castle Pines Parkway for the project.

Initial investigators identified suspects only to clear them all.

Within roughly a year, the case went cold.

“The investigation laid dormant for many years after the available leads appeared to have yielded only negative results,” the affidavit said.

Investigators examined the case numerous times in the years since with no major breaks. In 2017, cold case detectives began using genetic genealogy.

The investigative method allows detectives to find relatives of their suspect by searching genealogy databases. After extensive research and interviews with relatives, investigators felt confident they’d identified their suspect’s mother.

Moving to Colorado The suspect’s mother used six surnames in her lifetime, according to the arrest affidavit. She had children with multiple partners, including four sons. Two of the boys were ruled out because they were young at the time of the murder. The oldest son disappeared more than 30 years later, and the family never saw him again.

That left investigators with her son Curtis White as the most likely suspect. Criminal justice records told detectives White was a chronic runaway as a child who didn’t

December 26, 2019D know his mother and considered his uncle his father figure.

A closer look at White revealed he’d changed his name to James Curtis Clanton around 1982. He had a lengthy criminal history, including a 1975 arrest and conviction for raping a woman at knifepoint in Arkansas. In Florida, he was arrested in 1998 on suspicion of domestic violence battery and in 2001 on suspicion of domestic violence assault.

He was released from prison on March 3, 1979 for the rape arrest and moved to Douglas County, Colorado. A former counselor of White’s contacted him during his prison sentence. White said during a parole hearing his counselor wanted him to move in.

The counselor lived with his family in Littleton four blocks from where Pruszynski got off the bus every day. Parole records show White moved to Douglas County initially but relocated to a home five blocks from Pruszynski’s bus stop.

He was arrested in 1981 for a parole violation but was not incarcerated at the time of Pruszynski’s death, noted DCSO Detective Shannon Jensen in the affidavit.

Brauchler cautioned in the news conference that Clanton is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but he commended investigators for identifying a suspect.

Pruszynski’s sister said she was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend.

“Helene was on track to do great things,” Johnson said.

“There’s not enough ice. There’s not enough basketball courts. There’s not enough tennis,” Penny said. “The big picture was, maybe, if this (ice rink) can come to reality, then word is going to get out.”

The DAWG Nation ice rink could be “the first domino” in building out an area with numerous recreational amenities, he said. Penny said the city would retain the public interest in the land used for the rink and likely issue a long-term lease to DAWG Nation. The land still needs to be rezoned to permit the rink,

South Metro assistant chief with job-related cancer dies Troy Jackson’s ‘legacy will live on’ in safety improvements, fire department says STAFF REPORT

A former South Metro Fire Rescue assistant chief of operations died after fighting a rare job-related terminal cancer, the fire department said in a news release.

Troy Jackson was diagnosed in 2013 with adenoid cystic carcinoma, according to the department. He died Dec. 16 at age 51.

“Despite the physical and emotional challenges of his illness, Chief Jackson triumphed as a phenomenal leader and mentor and will be remembered as such,” the department said in the release.

Jackson was hired as a firefighter in 1990 and was promoted to engineer in 1995, lieutenant in 1997, captain in 2005, training bureau chief in 2015 and assistant chief of operations in 2016, the release said. Jackson stepped down in August due to his health.

“We don’t know the number of lives Chief Jackson touched as a firefighter, but we know it was many,” the depart-

ment said in the release. “His legacy will live on as SMFR continues to make health and safety improvements to reduce the exposure that personnel have to cancer-causing carcinogens during their daily responsibility of protecting the community.”

Jackson’s devotion for his family — including his wife, Lori, daughter Carley, son Covey and daughterin-law Courtney — was “unmatched,” the release said.

“He was such an extraordinary person who loved his family Jackson dearly, and our hearts go out to all of them for the loss of their husband and father,” the department said in the release.

Flags were to be flown at half-staff at all department facilities, and badges worn by department personnel were to be shrouded until further notice, the release said.

Gov. Jared Polis ordered flags lowered to half staff on all public buildings statewide from sunrise to sunset on Dec. 20 in honor of Jackson, the governor’s office said in a news release.

According to Wikipedia, “The essence of haiku is `cutting.’ This is

often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a `cutting word’ between them, a kind of verbal punctuation mark which signals the moment of separation and colors the manner in which the juxtaposed elements are related.”

Whew.

Traditional Japanese haiku are welcome, but your entry does not have to follow any other essence than your own.

Mother Nature, humor, disapproval, resignation, admiration, frustration, patriotism, nonsense, brilliance, but, please, no plagiarism.

Good things, like Margaret O’Brien, come in small packages.

Last year, a reader named Susie Sigman told me she has written more than 100 “sad, funny, or poignant” haiku for divorced women, and that she has recited haiku about single parenting on stage.

As we go through the years, and with each passing season, we also seem to go through the seasons of life. We have seasons of joy and happiness, winning seasons, losing seasons, seasons of WINNING troubles and chalWORDS lenges, and seasons of triumph and celebration.

But it’s this time of the year where we use the phrase “‘Tis the season.” ‘Tis the season for magical feelings, ‘tis the season of hope, ‘tis the season of peace, Michael Norton peace on earth and goodwill toward all.

‘Tis the season of giving, ‘tis the season of awe and wonder. ‘Tis the season of Merry Christmas, ‘tis the season of Happy Hanukah, and ‘tis the season for ringing in the New Year as we pursue our hopes and dreams.

Maybe for some of us we could use a little reminder of the magical feelings of awe and wonder that comes with this time of year.

Whether it is the hassles of shopping or the stress of travel and traffic jams, or the pressure to close out our business year with a strong finish, somewhere along the way we may

have lost our way, lost the awe and wonder of the holidays.

We really could pick any time of the year and any season and say, “‘Tis the season.” We can and we should celebrate hope, joy, peace and love at any time of the year and in any season of our lives.

We can find moments of magical feelings and we can experience awe and wonder as we take in all of the beauty that surrounds us. Even if our season of life finds us mourning a loss and grieving, we can look back on loving memories, joyful moments, and the awe and wonder of our time spent together.

‘Tis the season. ‘Tis the season that brings out the child in us as well. As we hang the lights, decorate the tree, play Christmas music, sing, laugh, bake cookies, and take in everything about the season.

We attend parties and celebrate the season with our family and friends.

We watch in our own awe and wonder at the faces of children as they wake up on Christmas morning and see the gifts under the tree and the stockings filled.

We take pictures and videos and we post them and send them to others as we share the feeling of joy and happiness.

And in that moment, our end of year business stress is forgotten, the hassles of shopping and shipping are over, the beautiful memories of loved ones no longer with us fill our hearts and minds, and the awe and wonder of the season, this season, the season happening right now reminds us all about the real reason for tis the season.

This moment reminds us that we can deal with the traffic, we can endure the rush, crush, and temporary chaos that comes along with the season. And we can look around at

We don’t know how it was resolved but a few months later, since there had been no improvement in the problem, we called animal control again. We were told that the ordinance had been changed and now the dog has to bark for 20 minutes and the complainant either has to record it or have a corroborating witness who does not live in the same house. So the burden has fallen on the victim. The HOA suggested ear plugs or soundproofing.

Born to John and Phyllis MacGuffin who preceded him in death. John is a graduate of Hinsdale Central High school and attended Triton College and Milwaukee School of Engineering.

He is survived by Sister Sally (Bill) Ozga and there daughters, Jill Stoops, children Ted and Erin. Also, Susan (Don) Perusich, children Carter and Josie. Having been born and raised in Canada, Johnson always threw parties at home for her kids to celebrate when the clock struck midnight in Newfoundland — at 8:30 p.m. in Colorado — back when her kids were younger.

“We would make a cupcake bar

with all kinds of fun toppings, and buy cheap plastic champagne glasses and make mocktails,” said Johnson, who founded blog Mile High Mamas. “It was only 9 p.m., but the kids never knew the difference. And everyone could get to bed at a decent time — mostly mom.”

Family-friendly events Meanwhile, for those who want to celebrate early outside the house, the area offers a multitude of family-friendly gatherings during

the day and early evening.

Jefferson County Public Library will hold “Noon Year’s Eve” around 12 p.m. Dec. 31 at several of its libraries, including the Lakewood, Columbine and Evergreen libraries.

The Standley Lake Library and Golden Library will hold Europeanthemed events at 3 and 3:30 p.m., respectively, celebrating with music, games, food and a balloon drop, said programs manager Cindy Jaye.

Operation Christmas Child spreads spirit of giving Project provides toys, school supplies and clothing to children in need around globe

Receiving gifts was a concept that Yuliya Shubina wasn’t accustomed to as a child. Shubina grew up in a Third World country in Central Asia and receiving gifts was impossible, she says.

But all of that changed for her when she was 9 years old and received a “shoebox” from Samaritan’s Purse around the holiday season in 2001.

That shoebox, or purple plastic container in Shubina’s case, was filled with gifts like glittery pencils, a blue notebook with a red ladybug on it, a long-sleeve shirt and a stuffed puppy.

The stuffed puppy was the nicest toy Shubina had as a kid, but what stuck out to her from her shoebox was a letter from the family who donated her gifts. The letter said the family was praying for her and that there is a God out there who cares for her.

“I just couldn’t comprehend why a stranger would give an incredible, quality gift,” said Shubina.

Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian organization that provides aid in more than 100 countries, has been giving shoebox Christmas gifts to children around the world since 1993 through its Operation Christmas Child project. Operation Christmas Child is a mission through Samaritan’s Purse to provide small toys, hygiene products and school supplies to children in need outside of the United States and to children living on Native American reservations in this country.

“We’ve been given so much, and this is just a great way to give back and to give up ourselves, our time and resources,” said Cheryl Johnson, who has volunteered to pack the shoeboxes four times.

There are currently eight Operation Christmas Child processing centers in the country — one of which is in Douglas County northwest of Parker at the Samaritan’s Purse Rocky Mountain Ministry Center. Since the project started, Samaritan’s Purse has donated more than 168 million shoeboxes to children around the world.

Barb Peterson, a volunteer for Operation Christmas Child, personally saw the impact the shoeboxes have when she went to Ghana. She saw children who were overwhelmed when they received their gifts. Peterson says the school supplies made a significant impact, because many of the children didn’t have a pencil or paper. “(Operation Christmas Child) allows us to connect with our international partners and support them in a very tangible way. It’s a worldwide connection,” said Peterson. “We have so much that we can share with those who have very little.”

Colorado Gallery of the Arts at Arapahoe Community College is again host for Heritage Fine Arts Guild’s annual “This Is Colorado” exhibit — running through Jan. 16.

This would be a good spot for an art lover to find a soothing change from the busy round of holiday diversions.

The 2019 juror was Denver area watercolorist Steve Griggs, who selected 57 varied works, by 42 different area artists and named award winners.

Included artworks are executed in

watercolor, oil, acrylics, pastels, ink, collage and combinations of those mediums, and they offer a range of styles and subjects for a viewer to enjoy.

“This is Colorado” is the largest exhibit held annually by HFAG and has been located at ACC for a number of years — after wandering in its early days. The overall effect when one enters into the gallery is an inviting continuum of color that circles the room.

Start walking and focus on individual works — perhaps cross the gallery to first find the Best of Show, “Song of the West,” by Linden Kirby.

It is a skillfully rendered horizontal, 24” X 72” acrylic painting that combines and layers assorted Western images. It invites close inspection to see what storytelling bits and pieces Kirby has gathered from memories and/or his studio ...

Students serve up helpings of turkey, cheer High school’s annual event provides meal to hundreds

More than 200 community members, senior citizens and residents of the Sky Cliff Center in Castle Rock attended Frontier High School’s annual Thanksgiving dinner celebration — postponed this year until Dec. 16.

Students have been serving dinner for more than 25 years, and typically do so the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Due to a snow day, this year’s event was postponed and renamed the holiday event.

Frontier is an alternative high school in Elizabeth with about 40 students in grades nine through 12, and the holiday event is driven by students who approach local businesses for donations starting in October to help fund the dinner and raffle gifts.

“These are kids who have chosen to come to Frontier to further their education as they see fit,” said Principal Robert McMullen. “These are great kids and they do such a great job each year to feed so many people. These kids are future entrepreneurs and will change the world.”

Frontier student Kristina McMahan, 18, manned the dessert booth, and said she enjoys serving members of the community.

“It’s nice how the community comes together to support Frontier,” said McMahan. “Everyone is caring and loving at Frontier.”

Z Romero, 18, is new to Frontier, and this is the first year he participated in the holiday event.

“It’s encouraging to see the whole community come out to support us at Frontier,” said Romero.

Residents of Sky Cliff Center attend the dinner each year, and Frontier students were out front to help residents in wheelchairs make their way into the school, then placing them at designated tables before taking their orders and serving them.

The tradition began 26 years ago, when Frontier students served Thanksgiving dinner to district staff members. It has evolved into an open invitation for community members and special groups to come meet the students at Frontier and enjoy a nice meal.

“I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work with these kids over the past 11 years,” said Jo Kelly, office manager at Frontier. “The community loves this.”

2019 ALL-SOUTH METRO FOOTBALL TEAM OFFENSE Quarterback: Nicco Marchiol, sophomore, Regis Jesuit, 6-2, 211 He completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 2,552 yards and 27 TDs. Running back: Noah Schmidt, junior, Grandview 5-11, 186 He led all 5A rushers with 1,815 yards and had 16 touchdowns.

Running back: Blake Rarog, senior, Legend, 5-10, 185 He rushed for 1,701 yards and 21 touchdowns and caught 21 passes for 248 yards.

Wide receiver: Chris Franquemont, senior ThunderRidge 6-4, 190 He averaged 16.3 yards per catch on 51 receptions for 829 yards and 10 TDs. Wide receiver: Chase Pendry, junior, Cherry Creek, 6-2, 185 He finished with 54 catches for 646 yards and 10 TDs, including 19 receptions for 258 yards in four state playoff games.

Tight end: Ryan Hollingsworth, senior, Smoky Hill, 6-4, 210 He was the Buffs’ go-to receiver with 44 receptions for 1,008 yards and 10 touchdowns.

OL: Carson Lee, senior, Cherry Creek, 6-3, 300 The University of Colorado commit helped Creek post a 14-0 record with his blocking.

OL: Roger Rosengarden, senior, Valor Christian, 6-7, 275 He is the top-rated offensive line recruit in the state and has committed to play at the University of Washington.

OL: Reese Atteberry, senior, Eaglecrest, 6-5, 280 He was a four-year starter and a Michigan commit who played all positions on the line.

OL: Ryan Rule, senior, Highlands Ranch, 6-1, 240 He was a first-team allconference selection who anchored the Falcons’ offensive line.

OL: Hunter Hammerschmidt, senior, ThunderRidge, 6-4, 220, Sr. He was a three-year starter and played every position on the offensive line.

Utility: Jayle Stacks, senior, Cherry Creek, 6-0, 225 His long runs often broke open close games, and the running back was the MVP of the state championship game.

Game-changers lead the way

Regis Jesuit quarterback Nicco Marchiol and Cherry Creek defensive back/ kick returner Myles Purchase headline the 2019 Colorado Community Media AllSouth Metro Football Team.

The 26-player team was chosen by the Colorado Community Media sports staff, with the help of area coaches. Players were eligible from teams in the Douglas County, Littleton and Cherry Creek school districts, plus from south metro area private schools.

Marchiol, a sophomore, was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while Purchase, a junior, was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year.

Both players had the ability to impact the outcome of games.

Marchiol helped Regis compile a 11-1 record. He completed 63.4 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,552 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also ran for 333 yards and 11 TDs. “He is a complete game-changer, not just by his play but also by his outstanding leadership ability,” said Regis coach Danny Filleman. “He is the guy in our locker room that everyone ral-

lies around.

“Bottom line, when the game is on the line, he’s the guy you want to have the ball in his hands.”

Likewise for Purchase, and his play in several different roles in the state playoffs helped Cherry Creek win the state championship and complete a 14-0 season.

He could have made the All-South Metro Team at several positions: defensive back, kick returner or utility player.

Purchase, a cornerback, had four interceptions and all were returned for TDs. He was in on 36 tackles and knocked away 10 passes. He rushed for three touchdowns and had 125 yards rushing on 15 carries.

As a punt returner, he returned 23 for 505 yards, three TDs, and his 22.0 average was tops among 5A players. He had one kickoff return for a TD and finished with 372 yards on nine returns. His 877 total return yards led 5A. “He was electric and dangerous when he gets the ball,” said Cherry Creek defensive coordinator Tom Doherty.

“His play rose up to the challenges.

He stepped up when the team needed him.”

DEFENSE DL: Grant Stewartson, senior, Highlands Ranch, 6-2, 235 He was in on 129 total tackles, 93 solo, which included 3.5 sacks.

DL: Khari Upshaw, senior, Smoky Hill, 6-2, 225 He led all 5A players with 20 sacks and was credited with 46 total tackles.

DL: Matthew Baer, junior, Regis Jesuit, 6-1, 225 He had 91 total tackles and pressured the quarterback with 12.5 sacks.

Linebacker: Tyson Lambert, junior, ThunderRidge, 6-0, 210 He was the team’s defensive leader with 129 tackles, 93 solo, and 17 tackles for losses.

Linebacker: Ben Beecher, senior, Ponderosa, 6-1, 225 He was second in Class 4A with 143 tackles and had seven sacks.

Linebacker: Julian Williams, senior, Cherokee Trail, 6-2, 210 Williams was the leading tackler in Class 5A with 137 tackles, including 10 tackles for losses.

Linebacker: Connor Dooley, senior, Chaparral, 5-10, 220 He led the team with 103 tackles, with two interceptions, a fumble recovery and caused a fumble.

DB: Myles Purchase, junior, Cherry Creek, 5-11, 170 Purchase had four pick-six interceptions, 36 tackles, 10 passes deflected and 11 total TDs. DB: Jack Howell, junior, Valor Christian, 6-0, 180 He also played quarterback, but had 65 tackles and three interceptions on defense.

DB: Jaxon Muma, senior, Legend, 6-1, 175 Muma was in on a team-leading 93 tackles, with 64 of them solo.

He also had four interceptions.

DB: Sean Hicks, junior, Rock Canyon, 6-3, 200 He had three interceptions, deflected 19 passes and was credited with 53 total tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS Punter: Griffin Vander Waerdt, senior, Chaparral, 6-0, 175 He averaged 39.5 yards on 38 punts and had five kicks downed inside the 20 yard line. His long punt was 57 yards.

Kicker: Alexi Sanchez Ventura, senior, Cherry Creek, 5-10, 180 He led 5A in kick scoring with 91 points on 61 of 61 extra points and 10 of 16 field goals with a long FG of 43 yards.

Returner: Jarrell Trahan, junior, Highlands Ranch He had 536 yards on 27 kickoff returns for a 19.9 average and gained 44 yards on five punt returns.

Colorado Refugee English as a Second Language Program: Teaches English to recently arrived refugees, who have fled war or persecution in their home country. In Colorado, refugees are from Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, Somalia, Iraq, Eritrea and D.R. Congo, among others.

Need: Volunteers to teach English. Tutoring takes place in the student’s home. Refugees live throughout Denver, but the largest concentrations are in Thornton, near 88th Avenue and Washington Street, and in east Denver/ Aurora, near Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street.

Other Details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language.
