Dine-in customers return at Castle Rock eateries ‘The public has been super-supportive’

Wade and Abby Lancaster sat at Great Divide Brewery and Roadhouse in downtown Castle Rock on June 2 on their first sit-down lunch date in three months. As Wade enjoyed a plate of brisket tacos, Abby munched on a Cobb salad.

The food was great, the couple said, and it felt good to be dining out again.

The Castle Rock residents said they are still taking precautions amid the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent spreading the virus, but they feel enough precautions are in place to safely dine in at local eateries.

Since Douglas County got state approval to reopen restaurants on May 22, and statewide approval went into effect May 27, Castle Rock restaurants and cafés are re-opening their doors and looking to the community for support.

Justin Adrian, director of operations at Great Divide, 215 Wilcox St., said the community response to the restaurant’s grand re-opening on June 1 was positive.

It went “exceedingly well,” he said.

“The public has been super-supportive.”

The restaurant and brewery pushed back its opening date because of the COVID-19 pandemic and is now focused on ensuring staff wear masks, heightening the cleaning and sanitizing restaurants typically do and giving guests as normal an experience as they can.

Adrian is not requiring guest to wear masks. “The biggest thing is

respect people’s distance and giving them the space they want,” he said.

Ray Guth, who runs Briccy’s Coffee downtown at 140 S. Wilcox St., said the business is now operating on average at 65% its usual sales. The shop did curbside pickup and delivery during the shutdown of restaurants, during which he rang up between 20% and 25% his usual business. Briccy’s

opened to sit-in the first day the government allowed, Guth said.

Guth expressed frustration with the shutdown of restaurants statewide.

The state should have customized its pandemic response to each community, he said, and not relied on a one-sizefits-all approach.

Guth’s tables are spaced apart and he has monitored how closely his customers gather in throughout the pandemic, he said. But Guth believes the pandemic is blown out of proportion. He did not wear a mask at the coffee shop on June 3. Neither did an employee making drinks. Guth predicts the shortage of customers will continue in the coming weeks.

Two Republicans are facing off in the party’s June 30 primary for Douglas County District 2 commissioner: Clint Dorris and George Teal. The winner will face unopposed Democrat Lisa Neal-Graves in November’s general election. Ballots were being mailed to voters starting June 8.

District 2 encompasses southern and western Douglas County, including Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Larkspur, Perry Park and Roxborough.

The winner in November will succeed Roger Partridge. (While they represent different parts of Douglas County, commissioners are elected at large.)

can overburden them to the point of failure; that has been interviewed for two different U.S. Senate confirmed positions in the Trump administration; and no conflicts of interest with large home builders and developers in the county.

Q: What single issue do you think should be at the top of the Board of County Commissioners agenda in 2021?

Every elected official takes an oath of office to support the constitution of the United States and the State of Colorado. I believe it is imperative that we eliminate all other opportunities in statute that provides an unelected official or employee to override the decisions of our elected officials. Lately, we have many citizens feeling marginalized by out-of-touch government decisions. Solutions include finding relief from heavy handed health department decrees and ensuring that enforcement of laws don’t violate constitutional rights like our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights. This should also include investigating Douglas County as a Home Rule county.

Q: If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

Ensure Douglas County is the best place in America to be a family. That includes: 1. New health department solution 2. Douglas County as a Home Rule county 3. Eliminate instances where an unelected official can drive the county into economic ruin 4. Create 10 to 20% cost savings 5. Leverage my proven leadership experiences gained while serving as a senior leader in industry and the U.S. Government to aggressively build back the economy while eliminating financial waste, to bring the entire county together as a neighborhood in order to solve some of our most pressing community issues, to create creative partnering agreements with other government organizations to provide executive level oversight and insight into our large transportation projects so that the county isn’t taken advantage of financially and so that projects are completed in a timely manner.

In the near term, I see recovering from the COVID shutdown and its waterfall effects for the next 12 months as a significant black hole of uncertainty economically and emotionally for every citizen and business within our borders. This is why crisis proven and principled executive government leadership is imperative at this unique point in our county’s history. 12 metro police agencies helped Denver with protests Tactics, use-of-force rules differed among departments

In the days after protests against racial injustice and police brutality first broke out in Denver on May 28, the Denver Police Department called in backup from a dozen metro-area law enforcement agencies, each bringing their own equipment, tactics and use-of-force regulations.

City police departments and county sheriff ’s offices in Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson, Adams and Broomfield counties assisted in Denver.

As police and protesters clashed, with some protesters vandalizing or destroying property or throwing objects at police, officers deployed a variety of crowd-control methods, including firing “less-lethal munitions” at protesters, and deploying tear gas and flash-bang devices.

How Denver police oversaw and coordinated the response and crowd-control methods of officers from numerous agencies is difficult to determine -- the department did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Colorado Community Media.

But in a rebuke of police tactics,

federal District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson issued a temporary restraining order against Denver police and partner agencies late on June 5, severely restricting their ability to use such methods.

“Although I do not agree with those who have committed property damage during the protests, property damage is a small price to pay for constitutional rights — especially the constitutional right of the public to speak against widespread injustice,” Jackson wrote in an 11-page decision, citing injuries to protesters including “loss of vision, fractured bones requiring surgery, deep laceration, loss of eyes, (and) ruptured testicles.”

“If a store’s windows must be broken to prevent a protestor’s facial bones from being broken or eye being permanently damaged, that is more than a fair trade,” Jackson wrote. “If a building must be graffiti-ed to prevent the suppression of free speech, that is a fair trade. The threat to physical safety and free speech outweighs the threat to property.”

The protests were spurred by the May 25 death of black Minneapolis man George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. Investigators ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, and officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder.

Woman who died by jail suicide was shining light to many Family, friends express frustration about unanswered questions

The loss of a Highlands Ranch woman who died by suicide May 29 after a brief stay in the Douglas County jail has left her community reeling as loved ones grapple with the event and the questions that remain regarding her final hours.

MiChelle McGarry, 54, was found inside her cell during the suicide attempt on May 25, Memorial Day, about 1 p.m., according to a news release from the sheriff ’s office. Hours before, McGarry’s sister, Linda Passamaneck, had pleaded with jail staff to allow her to speak with her sister or send her a message. She was told it wasn’t possible, she said.

“I would have wanted to say that I love her no matter what. And that I’d be here for her when she got out,” Passamaneck said. “I don’t know if it would have helped my sister but I would have liked that opportunity.”

McGarry was the founder and owner of the Peep Clinic, a treatment center for children with issues such as bed-wetting and constipation, with locations including Littleton, Denver and Englewood. She was also deeply

“That’s what I want her to be remembered for,” Passamaneck said.

“She gave a lot to a lot of people.”

After she was discovered in her jail cell, McGarry was taken to Castle Rock Adventist Hospital and placed into the intensive care unit for four days before she died from the injuries.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the McGarry family,” sheriff ’s office spokeswoman Lauren Childress said.

McGarry was arrested the night before on suspicion of domestic violence and third-degree assault, according to the release. Because of the Monday holiday, her hearing was set for the following day, May 26. Her suicide attempt was discovered on the holiday during a routine inmate welfare check in the jail, which is required every 30 minutes, Childress said.

Earlier that day, Passamaneck said, she was told by jail staff that if McGarry had her number and wanted to call, she would do so.

“I called first thing in the morning and that’s when I was told ‘we won’t give her a message and there’s no way you can reach her, and if she wants to talk to you, she can call. She will have a hearing tomorrow,’” Passamaneck said.

On its website, the jail offers video visits seven days per week. Passamaneck was not informed of this possibility, she said. The sheriff ’s office — citing an ongoing investigation — declined to answer questions regarding inmate phone calls, including whether they were not available due to the holiday.

“She changed lives and is changing lives,” said Regis McGarry, her husband of eight years.

Her practice, which was inherited by her son, will continue to operate, Regis said.

Castle Rock eyes common consumption for downtown Councilmembers hope to boost local business amid pandemic

Could Castle Rock residents soon carry alcoholic beverages from bar to bar in the downtown, or enjoy a cold one while relaxing in Festival Park?

The Town of Castle Rock is looking into creating a temporary entertainment district, making way for public consumption of alcohol in certain parts of downtown in a bid to support small and local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The town council asked staff to continue exploring options for common consumption after a June 2 briefing on the matter.

Both Mayor Jason Gray and Mayor Pro Tem Jason Bower said they hoped the move could be a temporary, emergency measure to boost a local economy stymied by COVID-19.

“We’re just trying to figure out how to help businesses get through this time,” Gray told Colorado Community Media on June 5.

Town Clerk Lisa Anderson said the town is already working with numerous businesses to modify their licenses by allowing food service establishments to expand into parking lots or outdoor areas.

“We’ve been working with the state and we’re getting those turned around in two to three days,” she said.

Outside the downtown eatery, white tents are set up in parking spaces and more tables line the sidewalk outside the restaurant’s patio.

district, an operational plan and a security plan.

Licensees would then need to form a promotional association board comprised of at least two liquor license holders and two other businesses based in the entertainment district. That board would be responsible for managing a common consumption area, she said, not the town.

Within an entertainment district, the town could designate various areas for common consumption.

Gray said he does not know how long the common consumption areas would remain in effect if the town ends up implementing them.

That depends “on how long it takes for restaurants to rebound,” he said, whether that be one month or one year.

He also doubts the measures would bring rowdy behavior to the area.

“This is not a college town; this is not Bourbon Street,” Gray said.

“I don’t think we are going to have people partying in the streets.”

Castle Rock gatherings focus on racial inequality Participants shared stories, protested police brutality

Nationwide protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis have reached Castle Rock, as organizers held community events and protests June 2 and 7 in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Castle Rock resident Janine Reid organized a demonstration held in Festival Park the afternoon of June 2 to spark conversations in the community about racial injustice in the U.S. and to promote education.

“There are just so many people who have racist ideas and don’t see that they are racist,” Reid said.

“What we are here to do today is to acknowledge the fact that racism and inequality is not a Denver problem, it is not an Aurora program, it is not a Colorado Springs problem, it is our problem as well,” said fellow event leader Joshua Pease.

Pease echoed that message on June 7 when the two organized a second event with the help of Denver community activist Rev. Quincy Shannon.

Reid and Pease said they hope white Americans will work to educate themselves on issues surrounding inequality and the treatment of people of color, then turn that education into advocacy.

Throughout the June 2 and June 7 events, people of color from Castle Rock took turns giving firsthand accounts of their experiences with racism and their ideas for moving the country forward.

On June 2, Brandon Davis of Castle Rock said it is the responsibility of everyone to speak up against injustice.

Davis called on the crowd to “be the difference maker. Silence is not an option.” Talking about racial inequality can change a person’s perspective, he said.

“I’m maybe one of the few male African Americans here,” he said.

“Take some time to discover and ask, ask questions, because knowledge is power. A lot of things happen, and a

Michelle Jones of Castle Rock described the phrase “All Lives Matter,” a common and controversial rebuke to the Black Lives Matter movement, as “gaslighting.”

“It’s like revisionism in history where you are ignoring the fact that everybody sees color and that it’s important to see color so that we understand the different experiences, the realities of people of color in this country,” she said.

country through riots and violence in cities including Denver.

“When you see riots happening out in the streets that’s not because people of color are criminals or savages it’s because trauma is pouring out of them, generational trauma,” she said June 2. “They are not being heard, and they don’t know what else to do.”

Police Chief Jack Cauley spoke to the crowd June 2 as the event came to a close, saying the department’s philosophy is to treat everyone they meet like family and with empathy.

“We all want to heal, we all want to heal together,” he said.

Cauley then asked the crowd to kneel with him and led the group in a prayer for the town and country.

“I pray that everybody can heal together that we can listen to each other, that we can be empathetic and passionate and treat everybody with dignity and respect. Everybody,” he said.

Kennedi Scales, a 16-year-old Douglas County High School student, said she wanted the opportunity to peacefully protest police brutality and failures of the criminal justice system to protect people of color.

“As a young African American I think it’s so important to stress to people that racism is everywhere and it’s taught,” Scales said.

Every aspect of her life is negatively impacted by the color of her skin, she said, adding she believes “there are a lot of people who have racist ideals and morals” even if they do not realize it.

Helping lead the June 2 event at one part of the afternoon was Riley Yantra, 19, of Castle Rock.

Yantra said he loves his community and the Castle Rock Police Department. He had asked Cauley to lead the crowd in taking a knee, he said. Yantra’s father is black and his mother white, he said. As more people of color took the stage June 7, they emphasized experiencing racism throughout their lifetimes but also during their time living in Castle Rock.

Ebassa Berhanu, lead pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Castle Rock, said he felt hesistant to speak up at first, worrying his advocacy would reflect on his church and family. His wife, Hana, urged him to stand up, he said. Ebassa shared multiple stories about his children experiencing racism — being told they do not belong or are not good enough — because of their skin color.

Hana, who grew up in Minneapolis, spoke about her pain watching her hometown burn on television, not being there to protest in-person alongside loved ones. Her pain extends beyond Floyd’s death, she said, going back to Emmett Till and the countless murders of black Americans since.

“I’ve been wanting to scream for two weeks now,” she said. “This is my pain. I am coming to you with my pain.”

Both of the Castle Rock demonstrations remained peaceful. Still, at least two nearby business took preacautions before the first event. Three men boarded up windows at Dazbog Coffee, on the edge of Festival Park, before and during the event. An armed guard sat outside the B&B Cafe, which also boarded up windows, on June 2.

Ahead of the June 7 protest, Reid said she hoped the first peaceful demonstration calmed fears. She personally had friends afraid to attend the first event but hoped they would that day, she said.

Residents and businesses have access to remote services, 61 online services and some in-person services that require a visit to the County’s Human Services and Philip S. Miller County Administration buildings open for public access from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Paperwork drop boxes are also available at Motor Vehicle offices in Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, and Castle Rock. The drop boxes serve Motor Vehicle, Recording, Veterans Affairs and the Assessor’s Office.

State relaxes rules for worship houses, gyms, recreation Playgrounds, swimming pools also opening under safer-at-home update

Continuing to strike a balance between public safety and returning to normalcy, Colorado officials have released plans to loosen restrictions on places of worship, organized recreational sports, pools and playgrounds. Under the changes, gyms can reopen to more patrons.

The updates to the state’s “safer at home” phase of social distancing come as COVID-19’s “reproductive number” — how contagious the disease is in Colorado — has ticked up after months of decline, and the second peak of the virus’ spread may be worse than the first.

“In most scenarios, we project the next peak in infections will be greater than the prior peak in April,” public health scientists led by the Colorado School of Public Health wrote in a May 29 report.

A June 1 extension of the safer-athome order — announced in an executive order titled “Safer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors”

The state Department of Public Health and Environment released draft guidance for houses of worship, outdoor and personal recreation, and some other items. Coloradans were able to give feedback until noon June 3 online, and the changes went into effect June 4.

Here’s a look at how restrictions have loosened, according to the guidance.

Laundry list of changes Houses of worship can welcome groups larger than 10 people under the new directives, which allow for a maximum of 50% capacity or up to 50 people per room, according to the state public-health department.

Seating should be arranged to maintain at least 6 feet in every direction between individuals or parties. A “party” includes members of a household who live together, the guidance says. Outdoors, groups from different households also can worship at least 6 feet apart.

The state strongly recommends that speakers and singers move much further back —about 25 feet — than others to maximize distance between them and the front row of attendees. Choirs should not be used at this time, given the strong risk of viral spread from singing, the state recommends.

The state plans to “continually review” the guidelines and welcomed feedback in a survey at tinyurl. com/ColoradoCOVIDWorship by June 12.

Outdoor recreation could see a laundry list of changes in time for summer: Playgrounds can be open for up to 10 people at a time, and outdoor sport facilities such as tennis and basketball courts, and fields, can open for up to 25 people at a time per court or field.

Outdoor pools also can open, with up to 50% capacity or up to 50 people, whichever is fewer.

“It is strongly encouraged to limit pool activity to lap swim,” the guidance says. “If you permit open swim, make efforts to reduce in-pool interactions.”

Indoor gyms, recreation centers and pools can hold up to 25% capacity, or 50 people — whichever is fewer — per room, as long as people can stay 6 feet apart. Pools are limited to 25% capacity or up to 50 people.

Use of any shared equipment is discouraged, and facilities must ensure all equipment is cleaned and disinfected between each use.

Before the June 4 update, gyms had to remain closed except for personal training and classes indoors, which were limited to members of a single household or a mixed group of four or fewer.

Public health orders — such as

the safer-at-home order — generally issue requirements that Coloradans must follow, and the health department’s guidance provides instructions for how businesses and Coloradans can comply with the orders, according to the department. But some guidelines are only “strongly recommended.”

The full list of requirements for all types of spaces, with specific social distancing rules, are located at covid19.colorado.gov/safer-at-home.

‘When, not if’ Perhaps the largest change is for organized recreational sports: Youth and adult recreational leagues for groups of up to 25 players, excluding coaches, referees and umpires, are allowed.

Gov. Jared Polis acknowledged the risk in allowing such large groups at a June 2 news conference, speaking about the protocol for when COVID-19 cases would occur in players.

“I’m using the word ‘when,’ not ‘if,’ because there are so many”

organized sporting groups in Colorado, Polis said.

But he expressed more confidence in allowing organized groups of that size rather than large groups for pickup sports. Contact tracing — where public health workers notify people that they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 — isn’t possible with “random social groups” as opposed to leagues, the governor said.

Spectators are “strongly discouraged” for adult sports, the guidance says. Spectators, like parents, are allowed for youth sports, as long as members from different households maintain at least 6 feet of distrance from each other.

Teams must maintain contact information and rosters and be prepared to support local contact tracing efforts if exposures occur, the guidance says.

“Consider participating in low or no-contact sports like baseball, cross country, or cycling instead of high-contact sports like wrestling or

soccer,” the guidance says.

Under the prior safer-at-home order, Coloradans at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 were urged to stay at home at all times except to seek medical care.

The state public-health department now asks older adults — those 65 and older — and others, such as those with underlying health conditions, to stay at home except to perform necessary activities or for outdoor recreation, according to a June 1 presentation to reporters.

As of June 4, casinos, theaters, horse tracks and off-track betting facilities are still generally closed statewide, but counties may apply to open them via a variance, or waiver, from the state.

Hair and nail salons, spas, tattoo parlors, pet grooming, and massage establishments were allowed to be open since May 1, except for if a county had a stricter public health order in place. Capacity for such businesses was updated effective June 4.

Officers from a dozen metro-area agencies responded to the Denver protests, according to Denver police: Adams County Sheriff ’s Office, Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, Arvada Police, Aurora Police, Broomfield Police, Brighton Police, Commerce City Police, Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office, Lakewood Police, Wheat Ridge Police and Westminster Police.

Though Colorado Community Media was not able to obtain comment from all 12 agencies, a sampling of respondents showed a variety of tactics and involvement.

Adams County deputies, for example, deployed flash-bang devices and two types of tear gas, according to Commander Paul Gregory.

In social media posts and in response to questions from journalists, Denver police repeatedly denied using flash-bang devices against protesters.

Adams County deputies detained protesters on behalf of Denver police, Gregory said, but said the detainments were not arrests.

Unlike many local agencies, Adams County deputies do not wear body cameras.

Gregory did not respond to a question about how many Adams County deputies provided backup in Denver.

Demonstrators gathered May 28 at the Colorado state Capitol in Denver to protest the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

CHRISTY STEADMAN Adams County Sheriff Rick Reigenborn did not respond to multiple requests for comment on his department’s tactics and crowd control methods.

The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office sent 44 officers on May 31 and June 1, drawn from county deputies

and officers from city police departments that form a joint task force.

The Jefferson County team made about 10 arrests, said Sheriff Jeff Shrader, including “three or four” people found to be carrying weapons including guns. Shrader said he was unsure whether Jefferson County per-

sonnel deployed tear gas, but said he was aware of one instance of a deputy firing “less-lethal” rounds at a fleeing suspect.

Shrader said he understands the outrage at Floyd’s death.

“We all witnessed a murder in that video,” Shrader said, adding he supports many elements of a police reform bill making its way through the state General Assembly.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock declined a request for an interview on the matter through a spokesperson. The department did not provide details about its response.

In an interview on other matters with CCM’s Elliott Wenzler, Spurlock decried the Floyd killing, saying: “There is no reasonable, rational reason for any police officer to use that kind of restraint on someone.”

Other departments’ responses to assist in Denver appear to have been more low-key.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office sent between 40 and 50 deputies for several nights, said Sheriff Tyler Brown, but said they fired no shots or tear gas and made no arrests.

Brown said he sympathized with protesters, saying George Floyd’s killing was “an abuse of power people should be upset about.”

While Brown said he is confident Arapahoe County is a forward-thinking department, there’s always room for improvement.

“We need to make sure our ears and offices are open to have these conversations,” Brown said. “We can do this together.”

Froman said Douglas County never should have shut down. “They should have been concentrated on just the hotspots,” he said. “I should have been able to go to a restaurant a month ago.”

The shop’s survival depends on community support for local business, Guth said.

“Maybe I’ll make it, maybe I won’t,” Guth said. “I think the biggest message is to support local businesses.”

If Harry outlives me, he’s QUIET covered and I will go DESPERATION contentedly to my urn.

What I didn’t tell them was that Harry’s services were obtained on a very specific schedule, and timed according to my life expectancy and a dachshund’s down to the hour.

But if I calculated wrong, and

Harry’s meter is still running, I wanted to be clear with these individuals that Harry has certain preferences, allergies and aversions.

Together we listen to cello on Sunday mornings, generally Yo-Yo Ma, and more often than not his Bach suites, which are divine.

Harry can’t wait to go for car rides and road trips, but for some reason he refuses to go for walks. It’s something I have never seen before. Perhaps this will change as he ages.

By the way, Harry was born on October 23, 2017, in Bevier, Missouri.

He was advertised as a miniature but isn’t. By the time it was discovered, it was too late: We already had become best friends.

Like father, like son: he appreciates films, especially older ones. Nothing violent, and none of those moronic,

epic, space-opera rhubarbs.

He never has and never will wear costumes or be referred to as a “wiener dog” or a “sausage dog” by me.

He will come with a tub of toys.

Right now, for unknown reasons, he seems to prefer stuffed replicas of Shari Lewis’ hand puppet Lamb Chop, which Harry unstuffs after giving them a good thrashing.

Again, perhaps this will no longer be true when he is in his teens.

Have you ever wanted to hold on to someone in time, and not let him age?

This is my fourth and final dachshund. Knowing that, I look at him with admiration and appreciation each day.

We bunk together; he hogs.

We are rarely separated and when we are I can’t wait to see him. It’s mutual.

Anyone who has been welcomed home by their dog knows what this means.

As for allergies, he has a few, as well as some strong dislikes.

He had a reaction to something in our home or environment that resulted in little scab-like bumps on his otherwise impeccable torso.

Lab work showed he is allergic to oats and corn. We had been having midnight snacks of a Kashi oat cereal.

He disfavors rap and considers it an abomination. Imagine that.

He thinks “graffiti art” is an oxymoron. Imagine that.

He covers his ears when anyone starts to preach or proselytize.

We both believe in leashed dogs.

Seems others don’t always: There was a bloody incident right across the street, and we heard about something that happened in Central Park not too long ago.

Watch out for fraud connected to legitimate COVID-19 fears

O LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Arbitration is medical-bill answer Since last summer, one federal policy debate has been simmering in the halls of Congress: how to deal with “surprise medical bills.” Colorado’s congressional delegation has an opportunity to build a bipartisan consensus.

Surprise medical bills are a real problem. No patient or family deserves to be financially devastated because they inadvertently obtain care out-ofnetwork. When surprise bills occur, insurers and providers are left to negotiate a settlement. How that settlement is reached is the focus of debate.

Unfortunately, many proposals under consideration in Congress rely upon a technique called “rate-fixing” - essentially, price controls. Rate-fixing is big

government at its worst: a one-size-fitsall approach that forces doctors and providers to shoulder the bulk of the cost of surprise bills.

Rate-fixing is bad for doctors and providers, but its real casualties are the patients who lose access to quality doctors and providers who refuse to serve patient populations subject to rate-fixing.

Congress can do better than rate-fixing. Several states have experimented with a form of arbitration called “independent dispute resolution” (IDR) that protects patients from surprise bills while treating both providers and insurers fairly.

Yet, scammers are showing their ugly faces by turning GUEST up the volume and initiating COLUMN aggressive campaigns to commit fraud using a broad range of scams.

Fraud does not discriminate.

Anyone can be the victim of fraud. The elderly, the young, Jamie Sorrells individuals and businesses. Our country and other world economies are facing challenging economic, financial and health-related hardships. Such hardships are the catalyst of uncertainty, scarcity and fear. Anxiety is showing itself on one level or another. During moments of crisis, emotions begin to override the logical insights

we carry and leverage, especially when we are desperate for answers and solutions. Scammers feed off our fears and try to take advantage of the pain points in life.

As usual, the majority of fraudulent activity and source of complaints take place through robocalls, fake text messages, emails and online purchases.

Most of the circulating text messages and emails carry a COVID-19 theme, but they are nothing more than basic phishing schemes, which are a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as user names, passwords, and credit card details. Scammers reach out electronically to entice consumers to simply click on a link or open an attachment in order to access and harvest their personal information.

Anxiety and emotions are running high during the current pandemic. Emails are hitting personal inboxes promising vaccines, treatments and products relating to the coronavirus. The email recipient is then directed to click on a link to a website where their information

is obtained and compromised. These emails ask for credit card information for products and services, which often never arrive.

Keep in mind, there are no current vaccines or treatments. If the solicitation is for a product or service, be careful. If truly interested, then research the company or organization on your own. Visit secure and official websites independently, not through the embedded links. Confirm the sender’s identity. Look for typos and inaccuracies. While not all, many online messages and entities relating to COVID-19 are fake.

In addition, government agencies such as the IRS and Social Security Administration will never call, text or email you. These agencies will reach out to you through the mail, even during COVID-19. No legitimate agency will ask you to pay anything for your stimulus check nor will they contact via phone, text or email demanding that you provide sensitive personal or financial information.

Finally, there has been a recent surge in the number of charitable and co-funding entities, particularly around the coronavirus. Many are fraudulent, illegitimate and nonexistent. Do your homework. Research.

Is the entity legitimate? Do not feel rushed. This is your money. Do not send cash in the mail, gift cards, wire money or Bitcoin.

Never give confidential information.

Scammers like your fears.

Residents are finding creative ways to date during the pandemic

ownsend Wenzler of Arvada is just getting used to his new home.

Wenzler, 23, moved out to Colorado from Arkansas last August, and he came only knowing some family members and friends who live in the state.

And as COVID-19 closed social places where Wenzler would go to look to find people to date, he and other residents throughout the Denver metro area turned to dating apps like Hinge, Bumble and Tinder to meet other people.

“I don’t think it’s anything crazy, it’s just how it is, and young people are young and dumb and going insane and just wanting to branch out and meet each other. It’s impossible without the bars, so thank God for dating apps,” said Wenzler.

Since mid-March, mobile dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, where users swipe through a feed of profiles to see who is interested in them, have seen an uptick in use.

BBC reported that on March 29, Tinder users made 3 billion swipes worldwide — a record for the app. Other apps like Bumble reported that it saw a 16% increase in messages sent during the week ending on May 1 as opposed to the week ending on March 13.

Bumble also has a voice call and video chat feature and reported that it saw a near 70% increase in video calls during the week ending on May 1 in comparison to the week ending on March 13.

Wenzler had a date over to his home that he met on Tinder to cook her dinner during the pandemic. He said he thinks people are bored, and because of that, he believes residents his age aren’t afraid to forgo social distancing recommendations.

“Half of you wants to social distance, while the other part of you is going insane.

A different way of meeting people Meredith Gerdes of Denver also uses Bumble to meet other people for dating. She believes residents who are looking to date are realizing how dependent they are on bars and restaurants to meet someone.

“The important message to bring across is no one is meeting anyone in a normal setting,” she said.

Gerdes said dating during the pandemic is restoring a safer environment for women to meet men. She said before the pandemic, some of her friends would go over to men’s houses after their only interactions were on Bumble.

Gerdes has gone on a date to a park with a man who she met on Bumble during the COVID-19 era. She also added that before the pandemic, she met a man on Bumble who was visiting from San Diego, and although he is back in California, the two have been Facetiming and getting to know each other more.

“I am abiding to social distancing, and it has helped me learn more about myself. I feel good coming out of this knowing what I want and getting to learn more about myself,” said Gerdes. “I think COVID-19 has enabled (residents) to get to know each other more.”

The two went out together to a restaurant, hit it off and decided they wanted to go out together again.

But COVID-19 forced restaurants to close, so Whitley and Benavides ordered take-out food and ate together at a park.

“After our second date, we decided to do social distance dating because we wanted to be cautious with what’s going and be safe. For a good while, we didn’t see each other at all,” said Whitley.

Wanting to still keep the connection with Benavides, Whitley dropped off a care package to her that included ice cream and dinner. After that, the two spent time video chatting and did online tours of places like Machu Picchu — while still keeping a distance from each other.

Whitley said his big idea was to set up a projector in his driveway with a screen. Benavides sat in her car on Whitley’s driveway, and he sat outside of it and kept a distance as the two watched a movie together.

“I think my mentality was trying to figure out what I would do on a typical date and how I can modify it so that we can still do a date like a typical one

It was a time to spend at a park or watch the sunset and catch up on each other’s days and to get to know each other and what our lives are like,” said Whitley. “It was really nice to be able to connect, and because there was so much other stuff going on, we really got to know each other. I really appreciate that.”

McGarry, who was diagnosed with cancer twice in her life, once as a child and once as an adult, was known to many as a woman who always persevered.

“She had numerous health battles,” said Terri Ross, her friend and personal trainer. “Working with her, you could never even tell. She pushed through them and was positive and strong.”

McGarry completed multiple triathlons in her adult life and was training for the National Senior Games at the time of her death, Regis said.

Her loved ones remember her as a pillar of strength, who often didn’t show the pain she was enduring.

“I don’t think anyone had any idea about some of the demons she obviously was battling,” Ross said.

Her husband adds that while she had her struggles, most people who knew her didn’t see that side of her.

“Only those people closest to MiChelle saw the ugly,” Regis said. “MiChelle was complicated.”

Most of all, her husband and sister want McGarry to be remembered for all the good she did in other people’s lives.

“MiChelle was really special, she poured her heart into everything she cared about and so many people are amazed ... at all the things she’s done,” Regis said.

Unanswered questions For Passamaneck, there are still many unanswered questions about her sister’s death, she said. She was able to speak directly with Sheriff Tony Spurlock about the situation and was appreciative of what information he provided, she said.

Still, she hopes to see some changes in policy as a result of her sister’s death, she said.

“When you have someone in a situation like that and someone is trying to reach them, I don’t see why ... loved ones couldn’t reach out to them,” she said. “I’m not blaming anyone, I just can’t believe they can’t come up with a better system.”

Ross echoed this sentiment.

“Was she safe? Was she being watched over? I want to make sure those processes are changed because they’re obviously broken,” she said.

The investigation into McGarry’s death is underway and is expected to be completed later this month.

“Today is not the day to focus on blame,” Regis said. “That’s really not my interest right now.”

2-million-gallon water storage tank underway The facility is the final major piece for the region’s WISE project

A 2-million-gallon underground water tank, which will be the final piece of major infrastructure for the regional Water Infrastructure and Supply Efficiency (WISE) project, is under construction in northwest Douglas County.

“This will be big enough to provide most of the (water) demands that would be necessary for Douglas County for a long time,” said Mary -Kay Provaznik, general manager of Dominion Water and Sanitation.

The $5 million project will provide storage for drinking water to the customers of Dominion Water and fire-flow capacity for the Highway 85 corridor. About half of the capacity will go to emergency services, which can be shared in the region, according to a release from the water district. e The tank, which will hold as much water as three Olympic-size swimming pools, will be 30 feet tall and buried in an area between Roxborough Park and Louviers.

“Nobody knew how they could develop because there was no way to get renewable water. Now there’s a choice.”

Mustangs coach is raring to go Football squad should be contender if season gets to leave gate

Ponderosa High School football coach Jaron Cohen is anxious about the potential upcoming football season even though he hasn’t been able to have any in-person contact with his players.

Guidelines from the Douglas County School District and the Colorado High School Activities Association prevent any in-person contact between players and coaches for at least the time being.

“We haven’t been able to talk to any of our kids since March 13,” recalled Cohen. “We had some Hudl messages and some Zoom meetings to check on them and give them some tasks they could voluntarily do on their own.

They were on a virtual workout schedule. The kids are free to go to personal trainers if they want to, but the main thing Douglas County has said is that no Douglas County coach can be with them.”

The guidelines are necessary but hard to handle, says the Parker school’s coach.

“It does make it a little tougher, but we’ve had a few staff meetings,” added Cohen. `We’ve just said we know we

COURTESY PHOTO can’t be around the players. When we know we can practice, then we’ll have to hammer out everything, and I’m confident in our staff ’s ability to get us ready for that first game, whenever that day might be. We’re staying positive and flexible.

“It’s frustrating, and part of the reason why you coach is that you love the camaraderie of your staff and your players, the teamwork and the community service projects we do in the summer. That’s all kind of been put on hold, but you can only control what you can control.”

So Cohen and the Ponderosa players are playing a waiting game to see when practices might open and games might begin.

“As of now there’s been talk of a season on time,” said Cohen.

“There’s been talk about a delayed season and I know some states are exploring flip-flopping fall and spring sports based on what they decide the risk is. To me, that’s not ideal, but if that’s what we have to do, that’s what we have to do. You kind of feel like the CHSAA was getting hit a little unfairly when spring sports were canceled

because this whole thing went from zero to 100 in a week.

“They are working on some alternatives and that took some of my anxiety away. A lot has been put on our senior leaders to stay on their teammates about staying ready. I’m not worried at all about our kids staying ready.”

Pondo has gone 37-10 the past five seasons after Cohen started his Mustangs’ coaching record with a 5-6 record in 2014. Cohen, who has also been the head coach at Liberty and Aurora Hinkley, might have one of his best Ponderosa teams if the 2020 season does commence.

“We return a ton of players that will be three-year starters,” said Cohen. “We’ve been back-to-back league champs and been to the state semifinals and quarters the past two years. Those teams were actually young. When we have a season, we’re bringing back a three-year starter at quarterback, running back, receiver, a couple linemen and linebackers so we should be real tough.

“It’s not like we’ve been a 4-6 team.

Now we have a three-year starter at QB (Jack Hanenburg) and we’ve won 18 games the past two years. We’re bringing back 16 starters. Obviously the goal every year is to win league, win state and play to our potential.

This year I do feel we have a team that is as talented as we’ve had. There’s room for improvement in the playoffs.

We’re excited to get rolling.”

to represent my neighbors while also working for the residents of Douglas County.

As councilman, I cut taxes, reduced fees, and protected our God-given rights. I also helped build better neighborhoods, worked to manage the negative impacts of growth, and became known as a fierce advocate for my district.

I’ve also had the opportunity to serve on boards and commissions to include DRCOG, the Cherry Creek Water Authority, E-470 Authority, Chatfield Water Authority (Chairman), South I-25 Steering Committee, and the RTD Re-Imagine Committee.

Q: What single issue do you think should be at the top of the Board of County Commissioners agenda in 2021?

If you would have asked me that question six months ago, my answer would be different; but given the events of the last four months, I believe it’s time to form our own county health department.

Joining Tri-County made sense 30 years ago (when cows outnumbered people), but over my last six years on town council, I’ve seen them advocate for policies and positions that do not represent our values.

And the recent lockdown proved it’s time to form a county health department that answers to us -- not to outside special interests and not to Adams and Arapahoe counties.

Q: If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

Just as we formed our own judicial district, we need our own county health department. But I’d also like to see our county reinstitute some form of the Taxpayers

Bill of Rights (TABOR) so that we can maintain our county finances just as our municipalities do.

And we need to become a Home Rule County so that we can have more local control - which would afford us the opportunity to become a true 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County - while also giving us the ability to resist the liberal overreach we see every day from our State Legislature and Governor.

Q: How will you accomplish these things?

Just as I’ve done over the last six years: I’ll work with my colleagues and municipal partners while leveraging the relationships I’ve built over the last 20 years of living in this amazing county. And I’ll respect the role of staff and policy leaders, while also keeping government limited and bureaucracy in check.

I am a fierce advocate for my district - and as commissioner, that won’t change. I will always be accountable to the voters, and, just as I’ve done over the last six years, I will be responsive, forward-leaning and 100% committed to the work.

Q: What do you see as the biggest challenge to the future of Douglas County and its citizens?

Again - my answer would have been different 6 months ago. Back then, I’d say protecting our liberty and keeping government in check.

And while I still believe we can always do better when it comes to keeping government out of our dayto-day lives, today I’d say the most important challenge - that needs to be addressed first - is becoming Home Rule.

We can’t afford another economic lockdown and we need to protect ourselves from overreach of a state government that doesn’t align with our values and priorities. We need to do a better job of keeping Denver interests out of Douglas County.
