Residents displaced after Idaho Springs lodge condemned
A historical (railway) connection

Starting in January, railroad staffers will assess how much damage the coach has sustained since it was last restored in 1983, and give the city an estimate on restoration work. Assistant City Administrator Jonathan Cain said once he has the estimate he will apply for grants in March to help fund the restoration. The work ahead Before it was transported to Silver Plume, Cain pointed out visible
The county is asking for the community’s help to find long-term accommodations for 30 displaced residents after Lodge of the Rockies was deemed unsafe for occupancy. The lodge, located at 1601 Colorado Blvd. in Idaho Springs, was officially evacuated on Thursday night just days after it was determined the building wasn’t up to code. Residents have up to 30 days’ accommodation, as needed, at local hotels, however, a longer-term solution is needed. Mary Bernal, a caseworker for Clear Creek’s Human Services department, said she’s looking for information on any available rentals in the area, especially ones that are affordable. Most of the lodge residents are older and on fixed incomes, and they will likely need help providing first and last months’ rent and deposits, she described. According to Bernal, their food and supplies situation is OK right now, but housing is the biggest need. That’s where she hopes the community will step up to help. Idaho Springs has partnered with the Clear Creek Veterans Coalition to take donations for the Lodge of the Rockies residents. Cash or check donations will be accepted through the coalition, Idaho Springs City Hall, and the Clear Creek Resource

Springs’ Coach #70 moved to Silver Plume for preservation BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
For the first time in more than 35 years, Colorado and Southern Coach #70 has left the station — or rather, its spot behind Idaho Springs City Hall — and is once again connecting two Clear Creek communities.
Crews moved the coach on Dec. 8 to the Silver Plume workshop of Historic Rail Adventures, which operates the Georgetown Loop Railroad. The process took about eight to nine hours across two days, officials stated, and the coach will remain in Silver Plume through at least the winter. The coach, which once ran on the Colorado and Southern Railroad in Clear Creek, is the last of its kind in existence today. City officials said it’s an important community asset that needs to be preserved.
