In all, 33 brave souls ventured out into the chilly, and occasionally icy streets of Idaho Springs on Thanksgiving morning to participate in the 2020 Turkey Trot. No mass start this year — the participants all wore masks and maintained a good distance at the starting line,

before heading out on the 5K or one mile course in 30-second intervals. No finish line fraternizing either. Everyone who finished was given a free voucher for an ice skating session at the e Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District’s planned outdoor synthetic ice rink. Rec district representative Samantha Dhyne oversaw this year’s turkey trot.

“The biggest difference is that it’s free,” she said. “We’re just asking for donations for the ice rink.” Some folks came for fun, like the “Graham Fam,” whose members showed up in matching yeti costumes to do the run. The mom of the family, Pippi Graham, said the family was usually out

For a county such as Clear Creek, heavily dependent on tourism and prone to colder and snowier conditions than much of the state, the latest round of state-designated COVID-19 public health restrictions hits harder than most. Clear Creek was one of more than 20 counties that were moved to “Level Red” by state health officials due to rising COVID-19 case numbers. Among the tightening restrictions: restaurants had to move from 25% inperson dining to zero indoor dining. “I only have five outdoor tables,” said General Manager Tom Anderson at Tommyknockers Brewery & Pub in Idaho Springs. “And once the sun goes down business dies.” In Georgetown last week, few eateries have more than a table or two of outdoor eating. And many of those stood unused on Thanksgiving weekend, shrouded by snow in a city where even the warmest winter sun moves behind the ridgeline by 3:30 p.m. every day.
