June remains finish line for I-70 express lane project BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
lenge was to design an airbag using nontoxic chemicals. Students used a reaction between sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid — more commonly known as baking soda and vinegar — to inflate a bag to 5 kilopascals. After trial and error, and keeping track of the results, students performed the experiment, trying to get as close to the 5 kilopascals above atmospheric pressure as possible in
Fingers crossed, all the heavy work on the Interstate 70 westbound express lane will be done in June. By then, all the work around Idaho Springs should be done and the lane should be open for a test period with tolling likely starting in the fall, Colorado Department of Transportation representatives told the county commissioners on April 6. The remaining work includes putting in concrete barriers in the median and shoulders, putting in a permanent metal guardrail, some ramp work, some shoulder work and springtime paving around exits 240 and 241. According to CDOT Program Engineer Mike Keleman, the springtime paving should start around April 19, which will all be done at night. There will be no extended daytime lane closures, he emphasized. CDOT has been having ongoing issues with its contractor, Graham Construction LLC, with Keleman saying CDOT feels the company has demonstrated an inability to plan and execute its work on time, and CDOT has not given any additional time or funds to help with delays and stopwork orders. “CDOT’s stance is that we’ve gone

Chemistry students at Clear Creek High School always are up for a challenge.
The latest was to make a chemical reaction similar to the reaction that happens in a vehicle airbag. Not a huge reaction, mind you, but a controlled inflation of a sandwich bag. Teacher Jill Stansbury said she prefers using inquiry-based learning, which precipitated the airbag challenge, and in the process, students learned hands-on about chemical reactions, gases and more. Vehicle airbags actually are filled with toxic chemicals, and the chal-
