Local students learn wilderness survival skills over spring break

While spring break is traditionally when students hit the beaches for some fun in the sun, some Clear Creek students had different plans.

Instead of building sand castles and bonfires, they learned how to build shelters in the snow and make fires using only sticks. They still got to go swimming, though.

Last week, the rec district’s Kidz Korner program hosted the Ninja Outdoor Wilderness Survival Spring Break Camp, and about 20 children participated throughout the five-day camp.

Activities included learning to identify minerals and plants, natural movement training, and experimenting with dry ice. The capstone project was a ninja training obstacle course on Friday.

Rose Morris, Kidz Korner director, said the initial theme was centered on the ninja obstacle course, but once she contacted Roary Archibald, a local wilderness educator, the theme shifted more toward wilderness survival.

The camp still focused on teaching the students how to move naturally and efficiently, including how to calm down through breathing techniques, Morris explained.

County Briefs COVID-19 outbreak confirmed at county jail Four inmates at the Clear Creek County jail have tested positive for COVID-19, qualifying as an outbreak.

Clear Creek officials confirmed those affected have been isolated, and the jail continues to follow local and state COVID-19 protocols. The cases were identified when Clear Creek resumed regular testing at the jail the week of March 15 when more than 50 inmates and staff members were tested.

Other jails and prisons across the country have experienced similar outbreaks.

According to Tim Ryan, Clear Creek public health director, all the inmates have been offered the vaccine, and those who wanted the vaccine have received at least their first dose. Jail staff members likewise have been offered the vaccine, although Sheriff Rick Albers estimated that only 65% have been vaccinated.

During the March 23 county commissioners meeting, Albers explained that he’s confirmed with the county attorney that he cannot mandate that the inmates or staff members receive vaccinations. He’s only allowed to strongly recommend it.

So far, 28 inmates have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in the past two weeks. It seems, though, that timing played a key role in the outbreak, Ryan said, saying that the initial case and others were likely exposed before being vaccinated.

“A number of (those who tested positive) were vaccinated, and that’s helping to mitigate the symptoms they’re having,” Ryan continued.

EMS, Fire Authority name selection committee for feasibility study The Clear Creek Fire Authority and county EMS department are forming a selection committee to determine which of five consultants will conduct a feasibility study to evaluate whether and how the two agencies could merge, among other items.

During a March 23 work session, the two agencies decided to have an eight-person committee, comprised of two staff members and two board members from each agency. This committee will meet soon to evaluate the proposals and determine which consultants to interview.

EMS Director Bryon Monseu said he and a captain would sit on the committee, along with County Commissioner Sean Wood and Tom Candlin, a county resident and chair of the Foothills Regional Emergency Medical & Trauma Advisory Council.

For CCFA, Chief Kelly Babeon and his deputy chief will serve. Idaho Springs Mayor Mike Hillman, who is the CCFA board chair, has expressed interest, and Babeon said he would find one more for the committee.

The final cost has not yet been determined, as it will depend on which of the five consultants the agencies choose, but they have agreed to split costs 50-50.

Officials suggest staff change ahead of election With Mayor Mike Hillman and City Clerk and Treasurer Diane Breece’s terms expiring with the November election, city officials are trying to safeguard Idaho Springs from possibly untrained and unqualified candidates taking the reins.

Breece has been city clerk and treasurer for more than 20 years and said the position requires a lot of knowledge of city code and state regulations.

During a March 22 work session, Mayor Mike Hillman explained how the city has a financial director on staff to back up the elected city treasurer, and he would like to create a similar position to back up the elected clerk.

Breece explained how current staff members have been crosstrained to help with her duties, and she suggested first inquiring if any of them would be interested in the new position.

Hillman also suggested reorganizing staff members so department heads report to the city administrator, which is how it was previously.

All department heads currently report to the mayor and City Council, which is a more recent development, Hillman explained.

“I have been very involved in this community,” he continued. “We could get another mayor that’s totally involved, but we could also get a mayor that does a few things and signs some checks, and that’s it. ...

With elections, we don’t know who we’re going to get.”

Councilman Chuck Harmon agreed, saying, “(City Administrator Andy Marsh) is very competent, and it’d be a great level of protection for the citizens.”

Charging stations suggested for Park and Ride The Idaho Springs City Council has recommended ChargePoint put four electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot at the corner of 13th Avenue and Idaho Street, catty-corner from the rec center.

ChargePoint previously proposed putting the four charging stations — which could be expanded to eight as demand grows — in the parking lot behind Westbound & Down Brewing Co. However, council members felt hosting the stations at the park-andride lot would help save space and reduce traffic in the downtown lots while still keeping electric vehicles and their drivers close to the business district.

The park-and-ride lot would also offer more space for larger electric vehicles and trailers, they stated during a March 22 work session.

Jim Frank of ChargePoint said he’s working with Xcel Energy and the Colorado Department of Transportation to put in the necessary infrastructure and have the initial four spots available by June. ChargePoint has received grants to fund the project and will bring a revised proposal back to the city in the coming weeks.

According to Frank, those using the charging stations must pay for the parking spot through Park Idaho Springs kiosks or mobile phone app, in addition to paying for the charge.

Councilman Arthur Caccavale described how, in his observations of charging stations in Idaho Springs and elsewhere, occupants remain in the vehicle whiel it charges and don’t frequent nearby businesses. Thus, he was skeptical about whether the stations would increase business downtown.

Frank responded that, eventually, these stations will be a necessity as the volume of electric vehicles grow.

Plus, locals will be able to use them too, he said.

Special permit sought for body art studios The City Council has asked legal counsel to draft an ordinance that would require body art studios to have a conditional use permit to operate.

City Attorney Carmen Beery has explained that when the city amend-

ed its land use regulations in 2018, body art studios changed from a conditional use to a use by right. As long as a studio is in a commercial district and has a business license, it can operate without restriction, she said.

One tattoo parlor is operating under this change and can continue to do so, she has stated, but the council must decide whether others should be regulated.

To give themselves more time to decide, council members passed a nine-month moratorium on new establishments, which will expire in May unless extended, Beery clarified at a March 22 work session.

She also outlined multiple avenues Idaho Springs could take: leave things as they are, establish a licensing process, or amend the land use regulations to make body art studios a conditional use again.

Council members were most comfortable with the third option, saying they didn’t want body art studios to remain a use-by-right in commercial zoning and wanted to require that new establishments seek approval from the city before operating.

Beery said she would return to the council with a drafted ordinance, which can be tweaked further as necessary.

Save wildlife with integrated pest management Removing guests who eat all the food, make big messes and destroy things might prove to be a challenge. One way to definitely solve the problem is to quit feeding them, push them firmly out the door and lock it securely. When the usurpers realize there is no longer food or shelter available, they will cast about for a more hospitable home to invade.

While rodents and in-laws should never be confused with each other, using tactics that recognize the reason for trespassers in the first place can be a successful starting point for their removal.

Integrated Pest Management is a thoughtful and challenging approach to controlling pests in and around the home. By considering the bigger picture and investing time in a safer, more humane management approach, residents can stop automatically reaching for poison and start thinking a little deeper about holistically approaching pest management.

Henry Ford said: “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is

probably the reason why so few engage in it.”

The best reason to use an IPM approach is avoiding nontarget poisoning. Along with predators, pets and children are CHRISTY often victims of rodenticide poiGREENE soning (Colorado COLUMNIST State University’s Extension program considers children a non-target animal).

Through the lens of prevention and eviction, IPM asks questions like why and how rodents enter homes. By removing conditions that attract pests, such as food, water and shelter, prevention is the first and best way to keep rodents out of the home.

Food: Mice need only one-tenth of an ounce of food each day. Be sure the kitchen area is kept clean. Food should be placed in chew-proof containers or placed out of reach.

Home Access: The strong scent of mint can be repelling to mice. Soak cotton balls in the oil and leave in locations which could be an entry point. Block all potential access holes, such as air vents, with wire wool or a strong sealant.

Live capture and release: Catching animals and releasing them away from the home should only be a last resort if you have not been able to prevent their arrival into the home.

Is IPM worth the time and effort?

Yes, and this is why: Rodenticides are lethal: A National Park Service study near Santa Monica, California, found that 92% of bobcats, 83% of coyotes and 94% of mountain lions had been exposed to anticoagulant poisons. Rodenticides were the second highest cause of death for mountain lions behind vehicle strikes.

Rodenticides cause suffering: Legally applied rodenticides attack functions of the body such as damage to organs and neurological disorders. All poisons cause considerable suffering before death.

Some anticoagulants require only a single feeding to be lethal.

Since the fatality may be delayed for several days, the victim may ingest more poison and the carcass may hold multiple lethal doses. Nontarget species eating a mouse laden with a heavy load of rodenticide can suffer many illnesses and death.

To protect children, pets, and other predators, give Integrated Pest Management a try. Patience and problem solving are required, but families, the environment, pets, and wildlife are the beneficiaries of outthinking the unwanted guests who want to come over for a visitand stay.

Based on an estimate from a few years ago, the remodel would take at least $1 million, although staff members were confident the county could get a return on its investment over time.

According to Operations Manager Beth Luther and Coroner Chris Hegmann, other mountain counties are in dire need of rooms to conduct exams and autopsies. Thus, Clear Creek could forge agreements with these counties to host them for financial compensation.

During a March 22 work session with the county commissioners, Hegmann emphasized that an autopsy suite would be necessary to get a return on investment and conduct general business.

Because autopsy suites are so similar to exam rooms, they can be used for both. If Clear Creek doesn’t have an autopsy suite, it would have to go to the Denver metro area for every autopsy; and if it doesn’t have an exam room, staff would need to go out-of-county for every case, he said.

If the plan to remodel Station 1A moves forward, Luther estimated a remodel could be done in six to eight

“It could work, for sure,” Hegmann said of moving to Station 1A. “ ... (But) there’s nowhere to expand.

Luther clarified on March 24 that the request document will ask for a range of project components, adding that Station 1A hasn’t been renovated or updated at all since it was built about 20 years ago. The building needs a new roof, fresh coat of paint and new plumbing fixtures, she said.

Thus, the request will ask for estimates on various options, including a basic plan for the Coroner’s Office, an expanded plan for the Coroner’s Office and/or other general updates around the building.

In the meantime, the current site in Idaho Springs will be usable once the burst pipe is fixed, Luther clarified, saying that the county is working with the property owners to finish repairs in the coming weeks.

Police Blotter: Crime calls from March 15-21 Monday, March 15 — Idaho Springs officers assisted Colorado State Patrol with a stolen vehicle report on eastbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 239. Troopers were following the vehicle and stopped it on the offramp, and law enforcement conducted a felony traffic stop. Two men complied with directions to exit the vehicle and were taken into custody without incident.

The vehicle was towed.

Tuesday, March 16 — While on patrol, Idaho Springs officers heard a business’ alarm

going off. Officers investigated and, while checking the building’s exterior, found an open door with fresh pry marks on it.

There were also fresh footprints in the snow and wood splintering in the area. Officers checked the business but didn’t find anyone.

A duffel bag full of tools for burglarizing had been left behind.

Officers contacted the business owner and reviewed security footage of the suspects. The case is active.

Tuesday, March 16 — Empire police responded to a two-vehicle

accident along East Park Avenue.

The accident caused minor property damage.

Wednesday, March 17 — Idaho Springs officers responded to a report of assault at a local bar.

Officers found four men on the street and identified the two parties involved. The suspect reportedly waited outside the bar and assaulted the alleged victim as he left. He sustained minor injuries. The suspect was arrested after officers observed video of the incident.

Saturday, March 20 — Idaho Springs officers were on patrol and observed a vehicle parked in a public lot without its lights on. It had been sitting there for more than 20 minutes, so officers contacted the driver for a welfare check. The driver was reportedly intoxicated, and officers found she had warrants for her arrest out of Summit County and couldn’t be in possession of alcohol. Her blood alcohol content was reportedly four times over the legal limit, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment.

VOICES Tragedy will again lead to focus on gun laws

The tragic loss of 10 lives in Boulder last week has had and will have many impacts on all of us. One of them will be to ensure that gun control will now become a huge and controversial issue for the rest of this year’s session of the Colorado General Assembly.

It’s not as if gun issues were not already on the table. Several Republican-sponsored bills had been introduced to remove restrictions that are currently in place. None of them has any chance of success in the Democratic-controlled legislature.

by Democrats are in the process and had been subject to long and emotional debates. One requires safe storage of guns. Supporters argue that safe storage will protect people from gun accidents in their

homes and make it more difficult for criminals to steal guns. Opponents argue that requirements to lock guns away make their owners defenseless if their homes are invaded or makes people who keep guns out of their storage containers into crimi-

nals.

While those two bills have been controversial, in the scheme of things, they are relatively minor proposals. We are now likely to see proposals to prohibit ownership or use of assault weapons, remove the state’s preemption on local gun control laws and establish a waiting period between when people purchase guns and obtain them.

Any of these proposals will be legislative holy wars that would bring the legislature’s work to a snail’s pace and could make it difficult for the legislature to work on anything else. We’re also assured to see a renewed conversation about mental health in general and what

Every time there is a mass shooting, discussions about what we should do are reenergized. We’ve had more than our share of these events in Colorado. After Columbine, Colorado voters passed universal background checks. Gun-control bills that passed in 2013 led to two Democratic senators being recalled and Republicans taking control of the State Senate after the 2014 elections. After what happened in Boulder last week, it will be interesting to see if either the legislature or voters make other significant changes to gun laws in our state.

niques for years and has started passing on that knowledge to students like Kidz Korner over the past six years.

He loves teaching and wants children to learn environmental adaptability — what they shouldn’t be as afraid of and what they should be more cautious about.

Archibald also wanted the students to know that failing is totally OK, saying that he’s failed to start a fire by hand, for instance, thousands of times. Sometimes, failure is another way to learn.

As far as particular subjects, Archibald said his favorites to teach are about local flora and natural movement, which involves proper posture, and how to jump and hike without hurting oneself.

While he only attended camp the latter half of the week, Johnny Reich, 9, really enjoyed creating a snowball on March 24 that was so big that he and his friends could sit on it. However, he said the coolest part of camp was Thursday’s dry ice experiment.

Five-year-old Fiona Beall, who attended the camp Wednesday and Thursday, said she liked swimming the most.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old Noah Windley, who was at the camp all five days, described how it took three days to build a shelter out of compressed snow and lattice-worked sticks, as the group took on new tasks to complete it each day.

Noah and Johnny both said they do a lot of hiking, camping and backpacking, so these skills will probably come in handy someday, especially if they ever get lost or stranded.

Noah particularly appreciated learning how to make a friction fire, saying, “If you’re stuck in the wild, you can use these techniques.”

The Clear Creek poms team capped off a whirlwind season Friday and placed fourth in the Class 2A State Spirit Championships.

The Golddiggers came away with a total score of 73.40 with no deductions. West Grand, Hotchkiss and Sanford claimed the top three spots, and all six Class 2A teams were within 3 points of each other.

Back on March 4, Clear Creek took first place at its league competition.

Coach Dana Inman won the Frontier League’s Coach of the Year award, and junior Haylee Downare took home Dancer of the Year.

“I think (the season) would’ve been better if we’d had more time to perfect everything,” freshman Sharlynne McKown said. “It got cut short because of COVID.” The season really was an unusual one, Inman described, saying the team has been on-and-off since July.

The poms season typically runs August through December, with the team performing at fall football games before transitioning to its own competition season.

The Golddiggers had to make everything work — practices with COVID-19 protocols, not having a fall football season, and both its league and state competitions being pushed back from their initial winter dates.

McKown and Inman said that, despite the season starting earlier and ending later than normal, it also felt rushed.

“We haven’t had time for any extra things we normally do,” Inman continued.

Additionally, the state championships also moved venues this year, as Friday’s finals were held at Colorado Springs’ Broadmoor World Arena.

Inman said it’s typically at the Denver Coliseum.

However, McKown didn’t mind the new venue, describing how she and her teammates warmed up in the Olympic Training Center, which is adjacent to the arena.

“That was awesome,” McKown said.

Downare, who’s in her second year on poms, thought Friday’s performance for the state judges went well, saying the team has been practicing its main routine and a second one all year.

She said the cleaning part of the routine — when everyone puts their hands down to their sides — was one of the more difficult aspects to execute. The other was the floor work.

McKown, who participated in dance and gymnastics when she was younger, said she’s enjoyed joining the poms team this year, describing how there’s not a lot of drama among the seven team members.

Downare also said her teammates make her time on the team worthwhile, stating, “It’s a mini-family. … I can trust everyone on the team, and we have lots of fun.”

EMD updating water plan before giving the go-ahead for El Rancho development Water district approval is one step in the process to move the proposal forward

The Evergreen Metropolitan District is continuing to update its water master plan to determine whether it can provide water to a proposed development in El Rancho.

The EMD board met March 24 to discuss the proposal to put a hotel, retail and restaurants on the RTD Park-n-Ride, Foothills Fire, Alpine Rescue and former Observatory Café properties.

The water master plan will help EMD decide whether it can provide water for the development without impacting nearby water users, according to EMD General Manager Dave Lighthart.

The development proposal, which includes rezoning part of the property from agricultural to commercial, must be approved by the Jeffco commissioners. The county asks for other government agencies to weigh in on whether a proposed development is feasible.

If the water master plan determines that improvements are needed to the water system to accommodate the development, the developer can decide whether it wants to help pay for the improvements, Lighthart said. The EMD board has imposed a moratorium on new water taps in the El Rancho area until it updates the plan, which should take about six months.

Foothills Fire Chief Alan Anderson said he was excited about the proposed development because the developers — a group of Evergreen residents led by Jack Buchanan with Northstar Ventures — are willing to build Foothills a new fire station on the west end of the property.

“I need to rebuild the station in the next few years, which would be a great burden on our taxpayers,” Anderson said. “(Having Northstar build a new station) would save our taxpayers up to a million dollars.

Another reason why we support this development is because it would add a significant commercial tax base to our (fire) district. (The property taxes paid to the fire district) would allow for better fire service in our community.”

Northstar has had its pre-application meeting with Jeffco Planning & Zoning to show conceptual plans, and the planner assigned to the case has said the proposed development was complicated because so many entities are involved.

Northstar also is talking with the Alpine Rescue Team about relocating its building, with RTD about putting a Park-n-Ride within the development and with CDOT about reconfiguring Rainbow Hill Road, so it intersects with Highway 40

closer to the entrance to El Rancho Brewery.

Buchanan hopes to have the necessary documents to Jeffco soon, so a community meeting can be scheduled. The community meeting is the next step toward requesting a rezoning from the Jeffco Planning Commission and commissioners.

The proposal Buchanan said the plan was still a work in progress, but at its core was a 100-room hotel, saying that the development would create a gateway to Evergreen.

“We want to have nice architecture that enhances the entry to Evergreen,” Buchanan said. “This is a corner that merits putting something that looks better there. We think this is a win-win for Evergreen.”

Buchanan said if the county and other entities approve the plans, moving the fire station and Alpine Rescue would happen first, estimating that hotel construction would take place in 18 months.

He said the developers were interested in making the commercial uses energy efficient.

“We are enthusiastic about creating a lower demand on the water and sewer system,” Buchanan said.

“We are not going to strip down the site. We want to keep the vegetation and work with the land. This will be environmentally above and beyond what most people would expect.”

In cold weather, let wildlife chill Experts say wild animals don’t need our help when temps drop and snow flies

Most people are curled up inside during snowstorms and the coldest days of winter, but outside, there’s a whole different battle occurring.

The birds, deer, elk, moose, sheep and hundreds of other species are sheltering, using instincts — honed over generations — to survive.

“Nature knows best,” said Christie Greene, an Evergreen environmentalist. “People need to let animals live their lives without interference.”

Wildlife has adapted over the decades to withstand all that Mother Nature throws at it — the heat, the rain, the snow and the cold.

“Basically, wildlife is designed the way it is by nature,” Greene said, noting that animals don’t need help,

no matter how well-meaning it is.

“One thing people need to understand is that wildlife is very sensitive,” said Andy Hough, environmental resource coordinator for Douglas County. “They can sense the storm coming.”

Many animals begin increasing their food intake in preparation to endure the storm without much access to food, Hough said. They will also move to a better location, such as an area with lower elevation, or a place with trees, to shelter from the storm.

“Every species is different, and all react somewhat differently,” Hough said. “They have the instincts to do what they need to do.”

Winter can be pretty hard on wildlife, according to Jason Clay, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman.

“They have to search a little harder for food,” Clay said, “but the moisture overall is a very good thing in the long run. Big storms may have short-term impacts on the wintering animals but great long-term benefits.””

These animals have adapted to situations like the snowfall seen in the area in March, Hough said.

“While that storm seemed intense for us, it is not abnormal for this area,” he said. “These types of storms have been happening since the beginning of time.”

It’s not unusual for residents to see birds and deer using trees to hide away from storms.

“They are using that landscape anyway,” he said. “It’s not unnatural for them to curl up under someone’s trees.”

Bears, which will be awakening from hibernation soon, may end up remaining in their winter dens longer when there are significant spring storms like the one the foothills saw in mid-March.

Greene added that when bears, in particular, get used to eating human food, especially trash, they tend to hibernate for shorter periods.

Deer, Greene said, don’t eat much food in the winter.

“Their stomachs are pretty quiet during the winter, and then (their stomachs) wake up in the spring when everything greens up.”

Some deer species, she added, gain fat and grow winter coats of hollow fur to provide an insulating layer for warmth. Some birds have a cold-weather response called “countercurrent heat exchange,” which allows them to stay warmer on cold, snowy days than they seem.

Moose, which are seen more frequently lately in Clear Creek County and the Jeffco foothills, have long legs to help them move through deep snow.

Many birds migrate south for the cold months, while those that remain stock up on seeds to survive the winter, Greene said. She is amazed that the chickadee’s brain grows neurons each winter to boost its memory, so it can find the seeds it has squirreled away.

One of the most important things for residents to know is that they shouldn’t attempt to help animals by feeding them, even on the most brutal winter days. CPW has had many problems with residents feeding animals, which can result in death for the animal, disrupted migrations and other issues.

“You can put feeders out for birds, but most other cases are illegal,” Hough said. “Much of what we feed wildlife is not the best thing for them, and it can cause health problems.”

Feeding can also lead animals to change their habits, which can cause nuisances and dangerous situations.

“These animals are very rugged.”

Clay said. “They can survive these tough winters on their own. … They don’t need our help.”

There’s snow place like the mountains for springlike fun Springtime snow brings out the creativity and fun in humans and animals alike, and the Clear Creek Courant received so many photos after the 3-foot snow earlier this month that we couldn’t pass up getting them in print.

The mountain area has received a total of 5 feet of snow since March 1 — a hefty amount for the area.

That equated to about 3.75 inches of water, which will help with the area’s drought conditions. For those who geek out on these things, the 30-year average for March water is 2.28 inches.

Better yet, the snowpack is now more than 100% of average, further helping curb the drought and fildfire conditions.

But for now, the snow is a fun way to get outside — creating beautiful scenery, and giving residents and their canine friends a chance to play.

Going to bat for misunderstood creatures Conifer based BatCREW helps bats, educates public

You could say members of Colorado BatCREW are batty — in a good way — about the winged creatures.

The group of licensed wildlife rehabilitators and educators across Colorado are on a mission to help bats when they are injured, sick or lost and need a helping human hand. In fact, CREW stands for conservation, rescue/rehabilitation, education and welfare.

Colorado BatCREW is headquartered in the home of Conifer’s Kathy Estes, and members are stationed around the state. She started the nonprofit organization in 2010, and figures the dozen volunteers get four to six calls a day about bats in the summer and about one a week in winter.

“The majority of people in BatCREW are doing transportation and taking calls and giving advice and giving education programs,” Estes said. “There are a lot of different aspects of these animals that people don’t understand. We are trying to change that.”

Colorado BatCREW just received a $2,000 grant from Colorado Parks & Wildlife for flight cages and equipment to keep bats during the winter.

Jim Guthrie, who oversees the grant program, says he is happy CPW can help groups like BatCREW because rehabilitating animals is a labor of love.

“To have rehabilitators in the area to do the work to save animals is so valuable,” he said.

so many amazing services for us.

Bats are impacted by lots of things — that goes for a lot of wildlife species — and rehabbers help with all of those situations.”

Sometimes young bats fall as they learn to fly, sometimes they are injured by cats or wild animals, and other times, as they try to catch insects, they get trapped on sticky insect traps. Some are susceptible to fungi or get sick.

“They are spectacular when we get an issue (with a bat),” she said of the BatCREW rehabbers. “They always jump right on it.”

Becoming bat crazy BatCREW members came to the organization by different routes.

Estes has been a wildlife rehabilitator for decades, and she burned out on helping other animals, so she decided to specialize in bats.

“Clearly, we don’t have enough

people to (rehab) bats,” she said.

Sachiko Boland of Highlands Ranch worked at the Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, and one day she found a bat on her big fluffy skirt.

“He crawled into my hand, and we look into each other’s eyes. I thought, `You are the cutest thing in the world.’ And I was in love head over heels.”

Years later, Boland was interested in joining BatCREW, and she says Estes took her under her wing “and she never let me go.” Boland spent several years as a licensed rehabilitator but is now doing more education work for the organization.

Becca Greer of Larkspur first got into bats when she was studying abroad in Australia, which is known for its large bats. Years later, she decided to get involved with BatCREW. While she is not a licensed rehabilitator, she helps with the organiza-

tion’s administration and works on education programs.

Conservation The rehabilitators say bats are an important part of the ecosystem, helping to tame the insect population. The more people understand their role, the more the bats will be left alone.

Some bats do carry rabies, which is why licensed rehabilitators have taken pre-rabies shots, and no one should ever touch a bat with bare hands.

“We’re doing a lot of work with helping with the conservation of the animals,” Estes said, including studying which species migrate and which hibernate and more.

mineral oil to get the bat unstuck from the trap and Dawn dish soap to clean it off. The bat needed antibiotics and physical therapy so it could fly again.

Estes says she has rescued bat pups from the inside of houses, bats that have fallen into swimming pools and bats that have fallen to the ground.

“We spend a lot of time working with the finders to talk through the situation and how they might facilitate helping the bat,” Estes said.

Sometimes people who find the bat can take care of the situation on their own, while other times, the bat must be picked up and transported to a rehabber’s facility for more extensive help.

Education Educating the public about bats is a major goal for BatCREW. Boland has seen families want to keep bats as pets, and she educated them on why that is not a good idea.

“It was a good learning experience for the family,” Boland said.

“They can pass the information along to friends and family.”

BatCREW members give presentations to school groups, explaining the benefits of bats and how people shouldn’t be afraid of them.

“There are a lot of happy stories with bats when kids find them,” Estes said. “I have handouts, brochures and fun packets for the kids to draw pictures. Often times, I trade a plush bat toy for the (real) bat the child has found.”

Welfare Bats are so vital to the environment that it’s important to educate the public to take care of them, the rehabbers said.

“The majority of the calls we get are happy endings,” Estes said.

“Some people want to know more about the bats, and they know it’s better that (the bat) flew away and led a happy life.”

Boland said more people are volunteering to help bats.

“People who love bats are unique,” she said. “It’s important for people to understand why we need them here.”
