Rec district purchases synthetic ice rink CCMRD to talk with city about seasonal skating downtown

Now, while the locale and community keeps Our Gang coming back to Georgetown annually, the events’ atmosphere is what motivates the

County residents will be enjoying the rec district’s synthetic ice rink for many years to come after the board of directors approved purchasing it last week.

The Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District initially rented the rink, which cost about $70,000, including equipment and staff time.

Purchasing it is another $57,000, but staff members said Jan. 27 they were confident that the rink will pay for itself by September 2022.

Along with the purchase, the district’s board of directors also unanimously approved renting ice bumper cars, which will cost about $7,000 initially with a revenue-share agreement afterward. The district will have eight bumper cars for at least 30 days starting in late February.

In its first month, the Frozen Fire Ice Rink at Golddigger Field had 1,500 users, including 1,000 during winter break, project lead Samantha Dhyne said. Booking rates were 90100% over the break, she described, and CCMRD’s also seeing strong private rental numbers.

Overall, in its first five weeks, the rink had $14,000 in revenues and $25,000 in donations.

Our Gang members appreciate unique atmosphere at Georgetown events

There’s something special about Georgetown Lake that has made it Our Gang 4 Wheelers’ home ice for more than 40 years.

While the club was based in Leadville when it was founded in the `70s, it only took a few years before Our

Gang moved to Georgetown Lake where it’s hosted its annual ice racing events ever since.

There are a lot of reasons for that, members described between races Saturday.

First, the ice itself is ideal.

It’s thicker than most lakes — 21 inches on Saturday — so ice-drivers can be on it frequently and oftentimes pretty late into the season.

“It’s hard to get something that will freeze like that,” race co-organizer Joe Huffaker of Wellington, Colorado said.

It also has great consistency, racer Kevin Boog of Thornton described, as it’s mostly out of the sun and in the wind.

Diana Ruth Measday 1/26/1939 – 1/21/2021

Diana Ruth Measday, 81, of Deming, New Mexico, passed away surrounded by family at her home in the early morning of January 21, 2021. Diana first of all was a wife, mother and friend.

She was born january 26, 1939 she was a retired RN spending most of her career in the operating room. She was also a member of the U.S. Air force reserve out of O’Hare field in Chicago. While on duty at Shepard Air Force base in Wichita Falls, Texas she met her future husband John. She remembered their first dance at the officers club….Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the night”. They were married in Chicago on October 22, 1966 and immediately moved to Wichita, KS where John was stationed at McConnell AFB. Diana resigned her commission and while in Wichita resumed working at Wesley Medical Center as an operating room nurse instructor. In 1968 Kristin Sue Measday graced their home. They later lived in St. Louis, MO, Charlotte, NC, San Jose, CA and back to St. Louis all the time following her husbands career with Monsanto chemical. They finally ended up in Evergreen, Colorado where they spent 44 wonderful years in the mountains raising their daughter Kristin. They owned and showed Arabian

horses with daughter Kristin going to nationals twice. Diana loved the beauty and solitude of the mountains but not so much the average 155 inches of snow!

Diana owned and ran Kwik Kopy printing in Lakewood for 25 years before retiring from her second career. As age caught up with them they realized it was time to get off the mountain and they moved to Deming, NM, her husbands “home town” where she lived a life of tranquility. Her favorite entertainment was going to Buffalo Thunder Casino in Santa Fe, Talking Stick in Scottsdale, AZ and most of all never missing an opportunity to go to the Pink store, in Palomas. She is survived by her husband John, of Deming, NM, her daughter Kristin Kvatsak and husband Ken of Lakewood, CO, two granddaughters, Amanda Edrich and husband Joel, of Brighton, CO and Kaitlyn Kvatsak of Lakewood, CO. There will be cremation with a memorial service held later in the spring for friends and family.

Mary was passionate about animal rights and loved the 20 pets she was blessed with throughout her life.

Mary was born in Orange County California. At age 8 her family moved to Switzerland where they lived for 5 years.

During that time they traveled extensively through Europe and visited Africa and the Middle East.

She moved to Georgetown in 1988 and worked in hospitality, banking and for Clear Creek County.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Virginia Williams and her sister Jennifer Williams. She is survived by her brother William Williams, sister Elizabeth Rosendale and two nieces.

Rose Margaret Thomas 8/2/1926 - 11/19/2020

Rose Margaret Thomas, daughter of Andrew and Ernestine Dransfeldt was born August 2, 1926 in Littleton, Colorado. She died November 19, 2020 at Collier Hospice in Lakewood, Colorado.

Rose Dransfeldt was the youngest child of Andrew Claussen Dransfeldt and Ernestine Goetz Dransfeldt. Andrew was born and raised in Denmark and Ernestine was born and raised in Switzerland. They both immigrated to America in the early 1900’s. They had 4 children, Marcel, Ivan, Martha, and Rose.

Rose was raised on a farm in the Littleton, Colorado area. At that time, the total population of Littleton was about 3,500 people.

Rose met Blaine Thomas while attending elementary school in Littleton. They went all the way through school together and both graduated from Littleton High School in 1943. After graduation Rose worked for the Littleton National Bank.

She was employed there for 5 years and quit working when she and Blaine were married.

Blaine was inducted into the Army in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946. Blaine and Rose started dating after his return home from the war. They were married September 5, 1948. They built their first home in Englewood and lived there 9 ½ years. They have three children, Stephen Blaine, Linda Rose, and Lorraine Margaret. All three children were born while they lived in Englewood.

In 1953 Blaine and Rose entered into a trucking partnership with Kenneth Trenberth of Idaho Springs. Their business was known as Clear Creek Transportation. They hauled all the freight into Clear Creek County. In 1954 they bought Kenneth out and in 1957 they added the Budweiser Distributorship to the freight hauling business.

The family moved to Idaho Springs in

1958. They bought the Vorenberg Chicken Farm and combined their business facility and home on the two block area. The chicken farm proved to be a great place for the Thomas children to grow up on, as they had lots of room to play and had a variety of animals to enjoy. Rose was still residing there at the time of her death.

In 1960 Blaine and Rose sold the freight business to Denver Climax Trucking and concentrated solely on the distributing of different brands of beer and pop to eight mountain counties. Budweiser Beer eventually became the main brand of beer that they distributed. As the business grew the chicken houses were converted into beer warehouses.

Blaine was actively involved in the running of Clear Creek Transportation from 1960-1976. Rose was a homemaker and kept things running smoothly at the house while Blaine was on the road selling beer. In 1976 the Budweiser Distributorship was sold to Tom George.

Blaine and Rose converted the beer warehouses into rentals. Rose was still in business and managing the rentals at the time of her death. She was one of the oldest business owners in Idaho Springs when she passed away.

Rose was an active member of PEO Chapter AP, Columbine Garden Club, and Social Ethics.

Rose was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Blaine, her parents, brothers Ivan and Marcel, sister Martha Widler, son in-laws Lonnie Kawcak and Stuart Arnold. She is survived by son Stephen (Alison), daughters Linda Arnold, and Lorraine Kawcak; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Rose was cremated. A Christian burial with family and friends is planned for this coming spring.

Drought conditions expected to worsen this spring EMD urges residents to take water conservation seriously now

The first six months of 2021 are predicted to be dryer than normal, and the Evergreen Metropolitan District is reminding residents that it isn’t too soon to conserve water.

All foothills residents, whether in a water district or on private wells, should be concerned about drought, and EMD General Manager Dave Lighthart is already expecting to impose water restrictions in the district as soon as April.

“The stream-flow forecast that came out in January is showing critical issues throughout the state but most importantly in the Bear Creek and the Mount Evans watersheds,” Lighthart said. “We want people to be aware that we are extremely dry. The long-range forecasts for the (foothills) are that temperatures will likely be higher than normal with an equal chance of lower-thannormal precipitation.”

According to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, as of Jan.

1, Colorado’s year-to-date mountain snowpack was 83% of normal and precipitation was 70% of normal.

Last year, the snowpack was 119% and precipitation was 92% of normal.

The 2020 water year, which ended on Sept. 30, 2020, finished on a record dry note, according to the conservation service. The combined precipitation in August and September 2020 totaled the lowest in the 36 years the service has kept records.

Then October precipitation across Colorado was 47% of average.

Last summer, EMD instituted Level 2 drought restrictions and was concerned it would need to move to Level 3 — the strictest level — until a couple of rainstorms in July increased water flows in Clear Creek.

EMD’s Level 1 requests voluntary reductions in water usage; Level 2 requires mandatory cutbacks in both residential and commercial outside watering; Level 3 requires no outside water uses and assesses fines for violations.

Lighthart said EMD generally waits until April to begin water restrictions, hoping that the typical spring snowstorms will positively impact snowpack, but “the longrange forecasts are not being very positive in that regard.”

Preliminary subdivision plan approved for Washington Mill

The Georgetown Board of Selectmen has conditionally approved a preliminary plan to subdivide an acre on the east side of town into six lots for single-family homes.

The Washington Mill, a vacant lot in the 900 block of Biddle Street, will still have to undergo a final subdivision plan before construction could begin. This will require additional public hearings with the Planning Commission and the Board of Selectmen.

Town Planner Martin Landers and the Planning Commission both recommended approval with conditions, with Landers saying that the proposed subdivision is

in keeping with the lot’s residential zoning and the town’s master plan.

During the selectmen’s Jan. 26 meeting, Landers outlined two environmental issues on the site, namely its location within a debris fan and its former use as a mine mill waste site. Sampling was done on the northeast corner of the site, and concentrations of lead and arsenic were identified.

Thus, environmental agencies recommended the applicant have a materials management plan (MMP) to decontaminate the area, and the board made its approval conditional that the plan applies to the entire 1-acre site and not just the northeast section.

Applicant Marvin Geisness, who

lives on Second Street, said the property’s been owned by various mining entities who never had any interest in developing the site. However, he felt the time was right to develop it by addressing the environmental issue and building homes there.

Craig Abrahamson, a representative for Geisness, said the project will require upgrades to the nearby water, sewer and gas lines, which the developers will pay for.

He also emphasized that the potential soil contamination was a larger issue than the debris fan. He noted that several parts of Georgetown are within debris fans, areas where materials from debris flows or mudslides can accumulate in a fan-like shape.

The potentially contaminated soil was the selectmen’s biggest concern but they felt comfortable with the idea that the MMP should be applied to the entire property.

With the preliminary subdivision plan approved, Landers said the applicant has a year to submit the final plat for the property.

Once the town staff has a complete application, it will schedule a public hearing, which usually takes about two months from application completion.

“There will be a lot more detailed review in this stage,” Landers said, clarifying that the site’s engineering will come under more scrutiny. “It’ll be one last bite at the apple.”

Police blotter: Crime Calls from Jan. 18-24 Monday, Jan. 18 — An Empire officer responded to a theft of a catalytic converter on North Dailey Street. The item was stolen over the previous weekend. The following day, the officer responded to a similar theft on South Guanella Street that might have occurred over the weekend as well. The incidents are under investigation.

Tuesday, Jan. 19 — Georgetown police investigated a criminal mischief call in the 900 block of Argentine Street. A vehicle’s rear window had been broken. However, there

was no empirical evidence to suggest it was human-caused as opposed to wind damage from the previous day.

Tuesday, Jan. 19 — Idaho Springs police responded to a report of someone lying in the middle of Soda Creek Road. The person was told to leave. About 40 minutes later, police responded to an incident where the same person was involved in a verbal disturbance at the hot springs.

The person was reportedly highly intoxicated and was transported to a detox center.

It had been tagged on Jan. 13 after residents reported it had been sitting there since early December with no license plate or serial number.

Wednesday, Jan. 20 — While patrolling the 2800 block of Colorado Boulevard, Idaho Springs officers reportedly witnessed a vehicle make multiple moving violations. During contact, officers had reason to believe the driver was intoxicated, and they were arrested on suspicion

County could decide on Five Star this week

With some local businesses willing to participate, county officials were still unsure last week whether to invest in and implement a Five Star State Certification Program.

The county commissioners were planning to discuss the issue again at their Feb. 2 meeting, when staff would make a formal recommendation so officials could try to make a decision.

According to recovery coordinator Alyssa Dinberg, as of Jan. 26, the county had 19 total respondents to its Five Star participation survey. However, some of them were ineligible. Of those that weren’t, most respondents were in Idaho Springs and most were restaurants.

While Dinberg encouraged more respondents before Feb. 2, most who’d responded by Jan. 26 said they would participate in a Five Star program.

As for a program budget, Dinberg estimated about $10,000 for developing and printing training materials, $7,000 for advertising and communications, and $15,000 if the county contracted with an inspection company.

For participants, she estimated average initial costs would be about $800 with about $500 a week afterward, which would go toward hiring a dedicated COVID-19 compliance and cleanliness employee.

However, such an employee is a suggestion and not in the state’s public health order.

Tim Ryan. the county’s public health director, pointed out that the county can’t implement it until its numbers are in Level Orange, which it had achieved last week partly because the county’s no longer doing its own testing.

“If people are asymptomatic, they’re less likely to travel to get tested versus just doing it nearby,” Ryan said, clarifying that residents can get tested elsewhere and positive tests are reflected in Clear crimes.

Clear Creek is seeking a Colorado Parks & Wildlife grant to fund about half of the $2.8 million sport shooting park construction.

If successful, Clear Creek could start on the project this fall, including lead mitigation, utilities upgrade and clubhouse construction. Special Projects Director Lisa Leben said she expects construction will be finished and the property open to the public in early 2024.

Look beyond the scorecard With a new year after an election a new legislature convenes in Denver to make laws for Colorado, approve a budget and otherwise do their part in the governance of Colorado. Many Coloradoans from all parts of the state will watch, discuss and otherwise rate the General Assembly. One of the more common ways to do this for citizens and interest groups is to create a voters guide to the legislative action in the 2021 session.

Like anything in this world created and maintained by humans, voter guides are subject to manipulation and sometimes can create and foster misleading impressions. I don’t like voter guides as much as I once did. I concede that they have their uses and they serve as an assist for regular voters to determine how a legislator performed. There is a right way and a wrong way to view voter

guides.

Firstly, look beyond the numbers that serve as a rating.

Numbers serve as a way to aggregate a legislator’s performance according to that group. If someone has a high score then typically they are JOE in agreement WEBB with a group’s COLUMNIST positions. I would look first at the bills an interest group reviewed and then ask yourself how you would have voted on the bill if you were a legislator. See how you would have scored on the group’s index.

It helps to clarify because some people have points of disagreement.

Sometimes a group will make a radical departure in the bills they select for review. The 2018 legislative scorecard for Colorado Planned Parenthood gave all House Republican legislators but one a 0 rating. If I were in the legislature in 2018, I would have earned a 0 rating as well. The 2019 scorecard was a different story. Rep. Mark Baisley, R, a prolife stalwart, earned a 47% rating for 2019 legislation from Planned Parenthood. Other pro-life stalwarts such as Rep. Patrick Neville, R, and Rep. Dave Williams, R, earned a 40% rating and 30% rating, respectively, from Planned Parenthood respectively in 2019.

What caused this to happen?

Planned Parenthood added a number of bills to their scorecard that many conservatives had no objection. Bringing back the Maternal Mortality Review Committee passed unanimously in

the Colorado House for example.

What Planned Parenthood did by choosing the bills they did in 2019 was to show that sometimes the left and the right can work together for a common good. But what they did also was illustrate why a concerned citizen needs to look beyond the numbers and actually look at the bills.

Whether you are on the right or the left I would hope that you would thoroughly examine each bill in a legislative scorecard.

Other possibilities exist for distorting an index. It would be good, for example, if one group would divulge each reviewer and if they have a relationship with any legislators. Look at a scorecard with critical thought and use your influence to congratulate a legislator or express disagreement.

A taxing gamble When Colorado voters have approved constitutional amendments to allow gambling, they’ve directed tax dollars to the public good. The first phase of limited stakes gambling in casinos in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek directed funds to historic preservation. The expansion of games and increased betting limits directed funds to community colleges. Taxes from sports betting, which began in May, are targeted toward water projects.

An important argument to allow sports betting was that Coloradans could already easily access offshore internet betting that was neither regulated nor taxed. The proposal limited licenses to casinos, which could accept bets in person or online and set the tax rate at 10%. After

paying to set up and maintain oversight, tax money goes to the statewide water plan and water projects.

When sports betting began, almost all organized sports throughout the world had been suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemGREG ic. Despite that fact, Coloradans ROMBERG bet almost $1.2 COLUMNIST billion resulting in $3.4 million in taxes in the first six months.

People can bet on a plethora of things during the course of games which allow and encourage betters to make multiple wagers rather than only on the final outcome. That range of opportunities and the ease of betting through apps on phones and computers have undoubtedly had much to do with the amount of money that was bet in the first six months.

We’ve seen a fundamental change in public sentiment about sports betting with both state sanction and active support from the major sports leagues. the most notable are the money it brings in and the realization (or acknowledgment) that sports betting has happened and will continue to happen whether governments or sports leagues like it or not.

As we transition back into a world where fans can attend games and we again have more places to use disposable income, it will be interesting to see if sports betting remains constant or goes up or down. I expect that how easy it is to participate and how many participants find the excitement of playing hard to resist that we’ll continue to see increasing amounts of money betted and taxes collected that will be used and leveraged for water projects in our state.

The sad state of the Rockies and public ed Is there anything sadder than watching someone or something you care about give up?

Rockies fans, you know what I’m talking about.

Friday night it was announced that the Colorado Rockies had agreed in principle to trade Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals, along with $50 million, in exchange for a trio of second-tier minor league prospects.

Nolan Arenado, the 8-time gold glove winning third baseman. Arguably, both the best player in franchise history, and the best defensive third baseman in the history of the game. The kind of player that pitchers fear and that other players marvel at. The kind of player that fills seats.

Bad enough that he was traded; but to give the Cardinals $50 million to take him? That is insult to injury for the fan base. Competitive teams don’t trade away their best players in the prime of their careers.

Management has given up.

Now, a case can be made — and has been made by other smallmarket teams—that you have to do this sort of thing in order to win.

The Rockies expansion brothers

in Florida have twice put together great teams, won the World Series, and then held a fire HITTING sale to rebuild the HOME franchise from a lower cost starting point. But the Rockies didn’t just win the World Series. In fact, after a playoff run in 2017, a pair of incompetent off seasons have relegated the Rockies back to the status of Michael Alcorn afterthought.

I wonder, sometimes, if we aren’t, collectively, doing the same thing with public education.

Let me begin by cutting off those of you who reflexively are going to read that sentence and blame teachers. Get real. Teachers, principals, custodial staff, support staff… all of them have been doing heroic work over the course of the pandemic to keep your children learning. None of us saw the pandemic coming, none of us were trained for this sort of thing, and we’ve basically re-invented American education overnight.

No, I’m talking about society. The society that has a right, since they pay for it, to be interested in education, but who sometimes think the education system is their little lab experiment to play with. To wit: San Diego schools are no longer going to be allowed to grade students on completion or punctuality of assignments; in some cases, “alternative demonstrations of mastery” will not even have to demonstrate mastery of the given subject matter A teacher in California made the news a few weeks ago for forcing her third grade class — 8 year olds! — to rank their degree of privilege, and then take ownership (read: guilt) for their oppressive behaviors. Granted, this is one teacher in one school, but if you don’t think that sort of thing is coming to curricula everywhere, you haven’t been paying attention.

And never mind that the San Francisco schools are going to spend energy and resources taking the horrible names of Washington, Lincoln, and Feinstein (?) off of district buildings. And, I know, it’s California. It’s altogether too easy to just point and laugh. But, be real —what happens in California often makes

its way to Colorado.

Public schools were supposed to be the silver bullet, the thing that could elevate every child regardless of background. That hope has always fallen short, we know that.

But if we’re to be asked to spend what little time there is educating American students on the angst of the zeitgeist, then how are our kids going to be able to compete in a global economy with German and Chinese students, who spend considerably more time in school being educated in frivolous things like Algebra, Physics and philosophy?

Again, a case could be made that we need to rebuild from a different place to be competitive in the future.

But, just like in baseball, doesn’t that require that we get useful prospects in return?

Or is this just a signal that we’ve given up?

Idaho Springs Briefs ISPD chief finalists announced, interviews set for Feb. 11-12

Idaho Springs has announced the three finalists for the police chief job and is scheduling a virtual public meeting with them at 6 p.m. on Feb. 11.

The City Council members will then hold in-person interviews with the candidates on Feb. 12.

City Administrator Andy Marsh confirmed the three candidates Monday morning: Nathan Buseck is a captain and second-in-command for the police department in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he has worked for 21 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminology and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy.

Michael Dolan, a part-time resident of Erie, Colorado, recently retired as commander of the Collier County Sheriff ’s Department in Naples, Florida, where he worked for 36 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in business management and has master’s degrees in business administration and global studies.

Misty Siderfin most recently served as Severance, Colorado’s police chief, creating the town’s first department. She previously worked for the Silverthorne Police Department for 14 years and attained the rank of patrol sergeant/commander.

She also served as Silverthorne’s interim chief. She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice.

With Police Chief Chris Malanka retiring on March 1, Mayor Mike Hillman said during a Jan. 25 work session that he wants the public to have an opportunity to hear from all the candidates during the Feb. 11 town hall meeting.

Hillman outlined a possible format with each candidate having about five minutes for an opening

statement, and then city officials asking questions that they prepared with community members’ input.

“We don’t think it’d be a good idea to make it a free-for-all of questions from the public,” said Marsh, adding that asking them some questions will show how well they can think on their feet and relate to the community.

Staff proposes a one-way Wall Street

As part of a citywide parking plan update, Idaho Springs staff members recommended the City Council approve making Wall Street one-way westbound.

The ordinance first reading was on the Jan. 25 City Council meeting agenda, however, Mayor Mike Hillman said it was tabled until the issue could be discussed with residents at a Feb. 8 work session.

City Administrator Andy Marsh said that the public can submit comments at that time, or if they cannot attend the virtual work session, to share their comments with staff at City Hall or their council representatives.

Jonathan Cain, assistant city administrator, said he was sending out information about the proposed change to Wall Street residents. At the Jan. 25 meeting, he said his plan was to have them submit comments during the public hearing at the ordinance second reading, which would’ve been next month if the first reading had been approved.

Police Chief Chris Malanka said that, in his ongoing discussions with Wall Street residents, he’s heard a variety of ideas, including making it one-way eastbound.

SPORTS Diggers dominant early, hold on late

Clear Creek boys rolled to an early lead before fending off Middle Park

Collin Hendrickson is just a freshman. The same goes for teammate Tyler O’Brien. Yet, even on a Clear Creek boys basketball team that has senior leaders such as Seattle Schuessler, Kiefer Zabel and Reese Onago, they play a vital role.

“I think we all fit in really well together. We all make sure that everybody is encouraged and really positive before the game,” Hendrickson said. “I think we came out before the game with a really positive mindset and we wanted to work as hard as we could.”

The Golddiggers, from seniors down to freshmen, ran like a welloiled machine against Middle Park at Clear Creek High School last Saturday. Offensively or defensively, it didn’t matter. CCHS was rolling in the early going of its eventual 64-52 victory.

Scoring runs of 8-0 and 16-4 were the catalyst for a first-half charge that had Clear Creek (2-0) looking at a one-sided runaway victory. It was everything that head coach Scott Haebe could’ve asked for hand in the shooter’s face, taking care of the ball and transition baskets.

The hope for Clear Creek’s girls basketball team, as first-year head coach Emily Buikema called it, was that going into a home game such as Saturday’s against Middle Park is not to get frustrated. That the Diggers will have the tenacity to come back stronger the next go-around and learn some mental toughness.

When you lose 54-10, however, that’s tough to muster.

“We knew Middle Park was going to be tough. They are every year,” Buikema said. “They’re 3A, we’re 2A. They’re way taller than we are.

My hope in games like this is always that we would look for opportunities that we can approve on.”

In other words, learn and grow.

That’s the big-picture approach for

said. “That was a really impressive first half to come out and play with so much energy and enthusiasm. ‌ I thought in the first half we did a great job that got them back on their heels.â€?

That the Diggers did, and it all starts with a belief in one another. “Everybody just trusts one another,� said Schuessler, who finished with a game-high 24 points. “We know that Tyler and Collin and all of those guys are going to hit buckets. Bode (Baker) is going to hit buckets. Jett (Baker) is going to hit buckets.�

And that trust carries over on the defensive end as well, Schuessler said. Never was that so evident as it was in the first half when the Golddiggers got up by as much as 23 points, in part because of a 29-8 run between the first and second quarters.

But just as quickly as Clear

Creek built what was looking to be an insurmountable lead, Middle Park quickly turned the tables in the third quarter. The Panthers found that giddy-up in their step, similar to what Clear Creek had in the first 16 minutes.

Behind the play of Seth Holestine (14 points), Jackson Cimino (10 points) and Corbin Solomon (10 points), nearly erased a 21-point halftime deficit in the first six-plus minutes of the third quarter, cutting Clear Creek’s lead to 45-41. “We knew that they were going to have to do something to come back in the game,� Schuessler said. “We didn’t match their pressure and their energy once they got to us. We got a little fatigue, we were talking less and we weren’t on the same page together.�

This was Clear Creek’s third straight loss to Middle Park, but none have been as lopsided as this one was.

Middle Park, which got 14 points each from Bella Svoboda and Katie Trail, put the game out of reach midway through the second quarter in part because of its half-court press defense, which forced countless turnovers that turned into easy baskets.

From the time Kim Pappen scored late in the first half until Murphy’s basket in the fourth quarter, the Diggers went from down 12 to trailing by 40.

individual racers to return every winter.

Boog, who competes in the stud races, described how he was one of the founding members of Our Gang, but stopped racing for 28 years when he lived out of state. However, he returned to the ice as soon as he moved back and found a suitable Jeep.

The races are founded on the principles of friendly competition, so that people have fun while they’re out on the ice and support the other racers when they’re not, he explained.

For Huffaker and Bashline, iceracing is a family event.

Huffaker described how his teenage daughter will be driving in her first race soon, and Bashline’s

daughters grew up racing as well.

Now, her son-in-law Jason Johansen of Fort Collins has taken up the family sport.

Johansen has been an Our Gang member for about 10 years, and races both studs and cheaters — long screws that stick out of the tires for traction.

He also competes in endurance racing for rock crawlers across the Southwest, saying that it and ice-racing are completely different things. The former involves long races with lots of empty desert, while the latter has racers compete on very short courses — so short that there’s no room for error, he described.

While it is a long drive from Fort Collins to Georgetown, Johansen said that, after all that time traveling to deserts around the Southwest, he’s used to commuting to races.

“There aren’t many places you can do this,” he said of ice-racing.

While most feedback has been positive, Dhyne said users’ biggest complaint and staff ’s biggest challenge has been the synthetic ice surface.

Dhyne said multiple factors played a part: Because of its location on Golddigger Field, the wind blows a lot of dirt onto the rink, which makes it difficult to clean. Also, because of the south-facing exposure, warm weather seems to make the surface less slippery.

The district ran low on a special care solution and when it tried to reorder, the shipment got held up in New Jersey for several weeks.

Because bookings were full over winter break, it was difficult to block out times to clean and treat the surface.

“I’m not kidding when I said the maintenance has been challenging,” Dhyne continued. “We’ve worked really hard to remedy (the situation).”

Dhyne also suggested that saying “ice rink” in all the advertising gave people the wrong impression, and she will ensure future marketing efforts emphasize that the surface is synthetic.

The board members initially felt the district had been backed into a corner on whether to buy the rink in January, when it could apply more of the rental price toward purchase. They suggested waiting another month to do a user survey, but that would cost an extra $13,000 to purchase the rink.

“The problem with the data is that two weeks of Christmas vacation help us build a case for it,” new board member Scott Yard said. “A regular month would give us a better idea of what the rink is capable of.”

Something that seemed to ease their concerns was hearing that Idaho Springs officials are interested in hosting the rink downtown near Citizens Park over Thanksgiving, with Dhyne saying, “People might be more forgiving of it being small and synthetic if it’s downtown.”

She explained that the City Council will host a work session with CCMRD staff to determine whether and how that could work, adding that Mayor Mike Hillman at least seemed supportive of the idea.

“A downtown skating rink sounds great for our community,” Yard said.

Secretary Marcie King comment-

ed that she was worried the rink would be a novelty — popular one season and forgotten the next. However, if the rink eventually moves to Citizens Park or the Shelly/Quinn Ballfields, both of which are shadier and colder, she said, “I would probably take the risk to keep it.”

Vice President Tom Harvey said he felt Dhyne and her team had done such a great job that if the district continued investing in it, the rink would be successful.

New adventures and opportunities

Now that the rec district has the rink for good, Dhyne said the possibilities for additional revenues are plentiful, starting with the ice bumper cars.

The district will be renting eight cars for 30 days initially with the possibility for a longer rental.

Along with a $5,000 origination fee and $600 transportation fee, CCMRD also needs $1,100 to buy an annual state license, similar to what amusement parks have. Dhyne is also budgeting another $300 for miscellaneous materials.

Once introduced, a 15-minute ride will be $8, and revenues will be split 50-50 between the district and the company.

Also, now that it’s buying the rink, CCMRD can host year-round events and camps on the rink, Dhyne commented, and in the summer, it can cover the synthetic ice to make it a roller-skating rink.

Either way, something has to be done, because the road is so narrow, Malanka said.

“I suggested that we allow the residents to weigh in, but whatever they decide, they have to live with it,” he continued. “I do think that street was never designed for twoway traffic in the modern day.”

Kate Collier, who lives on Wall Street, said the road conditions are terrible, especially in the winter when it becomes a proverbial ice rink. She said she personally doesn’t mind having a one-way street, but commented, “You’re going to have some cars that back down or … park the wrong way.”

Council terms may start in January

City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would have new council members take office in January rather than late November.

A second reading and public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22.

According to City Administrator Andy Marsh, Idaho Springs currently installs its new council members as soon as election results are certified by the county, which is typically in late November.

However, because of the uncertainty around when exactly that would be, officials felt having new council members take office the first meeting in January would be more logical, as Councilman Bob Bowland described during a Jan. 25 work session.

City Attorney Carmen Beery commented: “(The current language) puts the statutory cities and towns in a waiting game, because when will the results be certified, and how much will the outgoing people get to do before they leave?”

Mayor Mike Hillman said this change would allow those council members who worked on a budget to stay in office long enough to approve it, which isn’t the case now because budgets are approved in early December. New council members could still modify the budget, though, if they feel there’s something that needs improvement, he described.

Hillman added that he would feel more comfortable with terms starting in January, commenting that a future council could change it.

Field Mechanic (Penrose, CO area)

Western contractor to the quarry, construction and mining industry has an opening for an experienced Field Mechanic. This position is based in the Penrose, CO area. Requirements include: No DUI within the past 5 years, no felonies, must be 21 years of age, must have a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least 12 months and drug screen required. This position performs troubleshooting, welding, mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance on vehicles, equipment and installations used at company shop and customer field site locations if necessary. Experience in Repair and Maintenance of Class 8 Truck Chassis, experience in Industrial Electricity –preferred, but not required.

Repair and troubleshooting of 1224 Volt Electrical systems. Welding experience- preferred, but not required. CDL/Class B required, Class A is preferred. Strong work ethic and motivation to perform task independently. Willingness to learn advanced skills. Starting pay is $32.77 per hour. Benefits include: medical, dental, vision, 401k match and paid vacation.

Truck Driver/Warehouse Management Class B CDL required. Safety requirements: Safely operate 36’ box truck, forklift, pallet jack. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Organize local warehouse.

Mostly dock to dock, Idaho Springs to Denver. 28-40 hours per week.

RANCH ASSISTANT EVERGREEN COLORADO

The ranch is searching for a full time assistant to the Ranch Manager. Resume Required. This is a hands-on position that requires performing all the activities to support a 5 owner 3,200 acre ranch. Duties include maintenance and upkeep of roads, trails, fencing, ponds, irrigation ditches, ranch buildings, and equipment. Additional duties include assisting the Ranch Manager with care of horses and poultry, haying, and guiding hunting parties. Ranch experience is preferred and experience with operating heavy equipment is a plus. Must be friendly, outgoing, a team player, and be available 24/7 in the event of ranch emergencies. Position pays $45,000 with health insurance and paid vacation. No housing is provided.
