Man who helped kill friend’s mother as a teen gets clemency Polis commutes sentence of Erik Jensen, who was 17 at time of 1998 Highlands Ranch crime

received clemency from Gov. Jared Polis, his office announced in a Dec. 23 news release.

“As of the date of this letter, you have served over 21 years in prison,” Polis wrote in a Dec. 20 letter to Jensen. “The crimes you were convicted of are serious. Nonetheless, I believe you deserve parole for several reasons.”

Jensen assisted Ybanez in a physical struggle that ended with Ybanez strangling his mother. Jensen also helped him clean up the crime scene afterward.

Jensen was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1999. Since then, he has earned an associate’s degree and further pursued a bachelor’s degree, co-founded a faith-based counseling program for inmates, started a CrossFit addiction-recovery program, and even pursued interests in art and physics, Polis’ letter noted. Jensen has been known to help when inmates have mental health challenges, according to the May court hearing.

“Your case manager described you as a model inmate and testified that he would have no concerns if you were to move in next door to him,” Polis’ letter said.

In the Douglas County District Court hearing in May, a judge decided Jensen would be resentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 40 years.

Erik Jensen speaks emotionally about sitting just feet away from his friend’s mother as she was dying, and deciding not to save her.

In a court hearing in May, more than 20 years after the crime, Jensen said: “I have to add value to the life that Julie Ybanez had.”

Jensen Nathan Ybanez was convicted of killing his mother in 1998 in her Highlands Ranch apartment at age 16. Jensen was 17 at the time of the crime.

Ybanez has said his parents emotionally, physically and sexually abused him. Former Gov. John Hickenlooper granted him a commutation that makes him eligible for parole in December 2020, citing Ybanez’s positive conduct as an inmate.

But Jensen didn’t receive that chance at freedom — until now.

Jensen is one of eight people who

was to be eligible for parole immediately and must be released by March 1. Polis commuted his sentence to 25 years’ imprisonment. The sentence began in 1999, so Jensen had served about 20 years and faced about 20 more, before Polis’ order.

The court’s May 22 sentence was mandatory based on a 2018 Colorado Supreme Court ruling that upheld a law allowing judges to reduce life sentences without parole for inmates who committed crimes as juveniles.

At that hearing, speakers presented an overarching message that the state Legislature should give judges the discretion to be even more lenient for those who offend as juveniles, with at least one referencing the arc of juvenile brain development and how Jensen improved himself.

loving each other.”

“I want to be a part of that,” Jensen said at the time.

In deciding to commute Jensen’s sentence, Polis also considered that Jensen has taken “full accountability” for his actions and has a “strong support network” of family and friends to help him transition from prison.

Polis also granted commutations to William Hoover Jr. and Abron Arrington, and he granted pardons to Eric Edelstein, John Furniss, Brandon Burke, Jamie Matthews and Ingrid Encalada LaTorre, according to the news release.

“These decisions were not taken lightly and were made after careful consideration of each individual case,” Polis said in the release. “These are people looking for a second chance and the opportunity to move beyond the mistakes from their past. They have taken important steps to turn their lives around and shown remorse for their actions.”

Retailers in Castle Pines who sell tobacco and vaping products will be required to obtain a license from the city starting Jan. 1.

When it passed the ordinance Dec. 10, the city became the first municipality in Douglas County to pass such legislation, although similar ordinances have been implemented elsewhere in the state, according to a news release.

“I am proud of the ordinance our council passed last week,” Melissa Coudeyras, mayor pro tem, District 1, said in the release. “Vaping has become an overwhelming issue for our youth, and Douglas County has the highest teen vaping use in the United States. This is a step in the right direction to make it harder for our teens to acquire.”

In addition to requiring vendors of tobacco or nicotine-containing products to be licensed, the ordinance raises the minimum legal sales age for tobacco and nicotine products to 21. Additionally, employees or clerks selling tobacco and nicotine products must be 21 or older.

“We feel strong enforcement of this ordinance will turn the tide and protect youth here in Castle Pines. We hope taking bold action like this will set an example for other communities in Douglas County and around Colorado to join the fight,” Councilmember Deborah Mulvey said in the release.

Taylor Roberts, chronic disease prevention coordinator for Tri-County Health Department, said such legisla-

tion makes enforcing existing legislation preventing sales to minors easier, the news release said.

“Most people don’t realize that, currently in Colorado, you don’t need a license to sell tobacco products and vape products,” Roberts said in the release. “That lack of regulation means vape pens and pods can be sold in places like comic bookshops, video game stores and outdoor suppliers, which makes it difficult to hold retailers accountable for illegally selling to underage people.”

An Oct. 15 resolution from the TriCounty Health Department Board of Health declares youth vaping a public health crisis, citing data that shows that 41.1 percent of Douglas County high school students have vaped at least once, the release said.

The Douglas County Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and the Douglas County Youth Leader Board have been urging local governments to consider aggressive steps, including tactics within the Castle Pines ordinance, to reverse the youth vaping trend, the release said.

Additional research the department cited states that nicotine adversely affects brain development in adolescents and makes lifelong addiction more likely for young users, and that youth who vape are four times more likely to turn to cigarettes.

The ordinance comes on the heels of national news regarding an outbreak of a deadly lung disorder tied to ESD use, the release said. Proponents say the Castle Pines measure, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2020, will be an important tool to reduce illegal sales of tobacco and vape products, effectively countering marketing tactics the vaping industry uses to specifically target youth.

‘So long to our Superman’ South Metro Fire’s Troy Jackson known to make others laugh, even during job-related illness

After a 6 1/2-year battle with cancer, Troy Jackson called on South Metro Fire Rescue Chief Bob Baker and another high-level member of the agency to talk the afternoon before he died.

And, in his trademark humor, he said: “Missed it by that much.”

That was Troy.

Baker told that story on stage at the memorial service Dec. 20 for Jackson, a former South Metro assistant chief of operations who died at age 51 after fighting a rare job-related terminal cancer.

But the years of illness couldn’t shake the man who became an inspirational figure in the fire agency, remembered as steadfastly moral and always willing to help. Some words loved ones used to describe Jackson: Superman. He had a childlike grin.

“Troy laid many bricks in South Metro’s foundation,” Baker said. “Our fitness and wellness program is one of those bricks.”

“Some of you have shared that Troy was your role model,” Baker continued. “He was certainly mine.”

At the Denver First Church of the Nazarene in Cherry Hills Village, memories from colleagues, friends and family painted a picture of a man who “poured himself out to others,” in Baker’s words. When a friend sold a couch to someone who arrived in a Prius, Jackson loaded the furniture in his truck and drove it all the way to their house. He once noticed a neighbor’s fence had blown over, and he gathered his equipment and fixed it without being asked, according to another friend.

Jackson once said, “ `It’s not enough to be doing the right thing — you have to be doing it for the right reasons,’ ” said Paul Russell, South Metro’s chaplain.

Jackson was diagnosed in 2013 with adenoid cystic carcinoma, according to South Metro. He died Dec. 16.

He was born in Englewood and married his high school sweetheart, Lori Dee, more than 29 years ago. Jackson was hired as a firefighter in 1990 and was promoted to engineer in 1995, lieutenant in 1997, captain in 2005, training bureau chief in 2015 and assistant chief of operations in 2016, according to the agency. Jackson stepped down in August due to his health.

A multitude of firefighting and law enforcement agencies attended the memorial service, comprising hundreds of uniformed personnel. At least dozens of vehicles from those agencies from around the state — from Pueblo to Thornton to Louisville and many in between — drove from the church south through Greenwood Village and Centennial.

Gov. Jared Polis, mayors, councilpersons and other public officials attended the service, according to speakers.

Before the service, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock called Jackson “a strong partner.”

“Chief Jackson is a longtime friend.

Matter of fact, we just hired his daughter as a deputy sheriff,” Spurlock said.

Jackson’s daughter, Carley Jackson, spoke on stage, saying South Metro personnel are less likely to go home with cancer than before because of her father’s efforts. The agency plans to continue to make health and safety improvements to reduce the exposure to carcinogens on the job.

“My dad will live on as my best friend in heaven,” his daughter said.

Jackson had abundant love for his kids, his loved ones said. When his daughter was recently sworn in as a sheriff ’s deputy, Jackson pinned her badge on, his face showing his pride.

Lee Eilers, brother of Jackson’s wife, read a statement from Jackson’s parents on stage. Eilers’ comments focused heavily on Jackson’s faith, and the parents’ statement said they’d see Jackson again.

“For now,” the parents said, “we say so long to our Superman.”

Program creates way for inmates to send holiday cards Douglas County jail offers opportunity to stay in touch

More than 100 inmates in Douglas County were able to send holiday cards to their families this season as part of a program within the county jail.

The card writing opportunity has taken place for about six years, spokeswoman Lauren Childress said.

“The program was created to allow inmates the opportunity to send cards to their family as they would if they were not in custody,” Childress said. “We want to help them stay in touch with their family for the holidays. It is important to us that we provide them this opportunity.”

Some of the cards used are donated and the rest are purchased, she said. This is one of many programs at the jail for inmates to participate in, she said.

Each inmate was able to pick up to three cards to send out to friends and family, according to a social media statement from the sheriff ’s office.

Commissioners certify mill levies at special meeting Property taxes are now ‘I truly didn’t think it was finalized; rates can be seen possible, I thought it on assessor’s site

Property taxes for the next year are now finalized after the Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved taxing district mill levies during a Dec. 20 special business meeting.

The rates that will be applied to each property are listed on the county assessor’s website along with comparisons to previous year’s rates.

Mill levies make up the final part of the property tax formula, which also factors in property values and an assessment rate set by the state.

During the meeting, commissioner Lora Thomas referenced a recent series of articles from the Denver Post about metro districts.

“While I think there are some metro districts that have mill levies that are just way too high, I don’t live in those metro districts and so I don’t elect the people who are responsible for those mill levies,” she said. “I do pay attention to where I live.”

The process is now fully automated, she said.

“I truly didn’t think it was possible, I thought it was too good to be true,” she said. “Seven months later, here we are… It’s truly amazing.”

All but one of the districts entered their information through the mill levy application, she said.

Man found guilty in fatal Douglas County crash Skylar Pagano, 27, killed two parents in head-on collision near Franktown

A Douglas County jury found a Thornton man guilty Dec. 16 of causing a deadly crash on Colorado 83 near Franktown in 2018.

Skylar Pagano, 27, told investigators he was high on methamphetamine when he was driving a stolen Ford F-150 southbound on Colorado 83 (Parker Road) just north of Franktown on May 20, 2018, according to a Dec. 18 news release Pagano from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Pagano was speeding at 80 mph in a 65mph zone. He attempted to pass in a no-passing zone on a curve when

he struck a car, driven by Festus Poyner, 32, head-on.

Poyner was driving a Toyota RAV4, with Julee Davis, 32, in the passenger seat and their 2-year-old son in the backseat. Poyner and Davis were declared dead at the scene. Their son survived with serious, life-threatening injuries. The family is from Texas, according to the release.

Pagano and a female passenger were both seriously injured.

Pagano is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Family files discrimination complaint against school district Dispute over medical marijuana policy in hands of state agency

A Highlands Ranch family has confirmed it filed a discrimination complaint against the Douglas County School District with the Colorado Division of Civil Rights over the district’s medical marijuana policy.

The school district has declined to discuss its policy or the complaint, filed in October, while the regulatory agency’s investigation is underway. A spokeswoman for the Colorado Division of Civil Rights said the agency can neither confirm nor deny the existence of the complaint.

Colorado Community Media obtained a copy of the complaint drafted by the family’s attorney, Alex Buscher — which the state agency may have amended before officially filing, Buscher said — along with the district’s response to the claims and the family’s rebuttal.

All are now in the hands of the regulatory agency for review.

In short, Mountain Vista High School senior Ben Wann and his family say the school board is usurping power granted to school principals under Colorado law. Their hope is that the complaint can change district policy to give school principals the power to decide who administers medical marijuana to students on campus and at school events.

Basis of the complaint Discrimination complaints can take months to resolve, said Colorado Division of Civil Rights Deputy Director Jennifer McPherson. McPherson said she could not comment on the case but discussed how complaints are processed by the agency.

A dispute could be resolved through mediation between both parties, if both agree to that. If not, agency personnel conduct an investigation and determine if discrimination occurred.

Their decision could be appealed, and a complainant can also take the matter to court if they are displeased with an outcome.

Colorado law was amended through legislation in 2018 to allow school personnel to administer nonsmokeable, medical marijuana to students.

Families must form a written care plan signed off by the school principal, among other requirements. The law does not require schools to let staff administer cannabis.

Douglas County in 2016 passed a policy allowing primary caregivers and parents to come to school and administer the products, but cannabis cannot be kept on campus or administered by staff under the policy.

Buscher said Colorado law clearly gives principals the authority to decide if staff can administer the products, not school boards or districts. “(The policy) runs contrary to law,” Buscher said. “Our argument is that

Ben Wann has epilepsy and uses hemp oil to treat his condition morning and night. In the event of a breakthrough seizure, or a seizure that occurs despite his epilepsy treatment, Ben relies on a nasal spray containing small amounts of THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, which he is not allowed to store at school.

The district’s response to the discrimination complaint says no state law, including the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, can force a school to store or administer medical marijuana at school.

“The school district notes that complainant is attempting to cast the school district’s policy relating to medical marijuana — a policy that if fully compliant and consistent with state law — as a civil rights/discrimination issue,” the district responded.

The district’s statement called the complaint an “end-around” Colorado and federal law. Its statement also said, “there is no evidence the complainant (Ben) is an individual with a disability or that he has suffered any disability-based discrimination at school.”

Their stance that Ben does not have a disability drew ire from the Wanns.

“No. 1, I’m just heartbroken the words were even said,” Brad said.

“How in the world can they say our son does not have a disability?”

Buscher said a disability under Colorado law is broadly defined and includes epilepsy. The condition impacts major life activities on a daily basis and has neurological effects on a patient, even when they are not having a seizure, he said.

He also added the school district provided a copy of Ben’s seizure-care plan with its statement, which he said serves as evidence of the student’s disability.

Sarah Klein, CEO of the Colorado Epilepsy Foundation, said epilepsy is considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act. “People with epilepsy generally can be eligible for federal and disability benefits,” she said.

Klein said the organization has worked with the Wanns, is aware of their advocacy efforts and is supportive of the family.

Traditional pharmaceutical medications work for about two-thirds of people with epilepsy, she said, but some people look for alternative treatment methods, like medical devices that modulate brain waves or medical marijuana.

She understands the issue with schools is complicated “because there’s some concern between schools that receive federal funding,” she said, but the organization believes people should have access to medications they use.

“If they are a student, they should have access to it at school. If they are an adult, they should have access to it at work,” Klein. “If this is a product that’s working for them and controlling their seizures, I think it’s only right that that kid should have access to those medications.”

Ongoing dispute Brad and Amber Wann say the Douglas County School District lied about the discrimination complaint in October. District officials have disputed that claim but remain mostly quiet on the conflict.

Douglas County School Board President David Ray promised Ben during the Oct. 22 board meeting that directors would review the medical marijuana policy at its first meeting in November, but the discussion was removed from the agenda before the meeting took place.

The district later released a statement, saying it learned of a complaint against it with a state regulatory

agency after Ray’s decision. The Wann family has strongly disputed that claim, stating the district knew of the complaint when Ray made his promise.

An email from an employee at the state agency to Buscher was provided to Colorado Community Media and states the staff member “served the document on October 17” to the district. McPherson said a business or organization is typically notified of a complaint within two weeks and is notified by mail, she said. The agency can email the notification if they have an email address.

“They might be referring to the date of the mailing verse the date it was received, that’s one possibility,” she said regarding the employee’s email to Buscher.

A district spokeswoman said they were notified of the complaint by mail. Ray has said the district received the notification on Oct. 23, after he pledged a policy review to Ben. Ray also said he intends to pick the policy review up again once the discrimination complaint is no longer under investigation.

Brad believes the district’s resistance is politically and personally motivated by a grudge against him. He wrote the blue book argument against the district’s mill levy override and bond measure passed in 2018, he said, and has campaigned against sitting and outgoing board directors, including Ray. The family believes Ray’s promise to review the policy was a political stunt to quiet them before his reelection in November. Ray has denied that claim and maintained he was deeply moved

by Ben’s request for a policy review.

Hoping for quick resolution The Wann family hopes to resolve its complaint as soon as possible through mediation, because time is running out before Ben graduates, Buscher said.

If the policy is amended and a school principal were still to decide against allowing staff to administer medical marijuana, that would be in accordance with state law, Buscher said.

He also said a recent decision by the Committee on Legal Services at the Capitol affirms their stance that the district’s policy is discriminatory.

On Dec. 17, the Committee on Legal Services, which is made up of Colorado lawmakers, determined a rule of the State Board of Education stating school personnel may administer marijuana “if consistent with local school board policy” should not be extended.

A memo from the Office of Legislative Legal Services said the state board doesn’t have the authority to allow local school boards to decide which school personnel administer medical marijuana, and that the law applies to principals.

“Authority under the statute is clearly delegated only to school principals and shall not be usurped by school districts,” Buscher wrote in an update to the family’s complaint, “which is exactly what has occurred here.”

When did all of these surveys begin?

Some have been around for a while.

But new ones are cropping up all the time.

By the time I come home from a dental appointment, there’s a survey waiting for me.

“How did we do? On a scale of one to 10, how much pain are you in?”

Does anyone read our responses?

I doubt it. I think it’s just the illusion of feigned interest and concern, and an attempt to appear receptive to make improvements as recommended.

So far I haven’t tried to find out by answering with absurdities, but I’m forever tempted.

I flew to Michigan, rented a car, stayed in a hotel, attended a football game, and returned on a different airline.

I was asked to take surveys by two airlines, the car rental agency, the hotel, and the University of Michigan athletic department.

How did the University of Michigan know I attended the game? I ordered the tickets through StubHub. Jennifer said, “Algorithm.”

A reader in Florida jumped on my column about the Second Amendment. How did a reader in Florida know I had written a column about the Second Amendment?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Will he do right thing?

Sen. Cory Gardner has been largely mum about his views on the impeachment trial that is being planned by the Senate. A recent news article reported Gardner’s comment that “he is confident the process in the Senate will be bipartisan and fair.” Unfortunately, two days later, he was undercut by his Senate boss, Mitch McConnell, who said, “I’m going to take my cues from the president’s lawyers.” In other words, the jury foreman intends to take instruc-

tions from the defense attorney of the accused – not exactly how we expect a jury trial to work.

Sen. Gardner needs to speak out about whether he believes that Sen. McConnell’s approach is going to provide the “bipartisan and fair” process he expected. Gardner needs to demonstrate to his constituents that he is a man who will do what is right for the country rather than slavishly follow his party leadership.

Apparently there is an application that alerts you whenever your name or a specific topic is mentioned on the internet.

I wrote about blueberries once. I heard from Miss Blueberry USA. The other day I read something about “smart” televisions that didn’t really surprise me: “The Portland, Oregon, office of the FBI recently issued a warning that internet-connected televisions may pose a cybersecurity risk.”

The article stated, “Now we have ‘always-on’ devices with web cams and microphones that have the ability to record us and then send the information back to interested parties, without us ever knowing about it.”

Doing less on our way to success

Over the years, especially at the new year, I have found myself focusing on the things I want to start doing in the coming year that will help me achieve success when it comes to the achievement of my goals and dreams. I have made this same recommendation in previous columns WINNING and when working WORDS with clients.

It is not a bad strategy. Listing the behaviors and activities we should start doing and then creating a plan to do what we said that we wanted to start doing. Most importantly, execut- Michael Norton ing against that plan and getting it done.

This year I am still going to apply some focus on the activities and behaviors I want to start doing, but I am going to increase my energy around stopping specific behaviors and doing less of the things that I know are still holding me back.

When planning for the year, many people and businesses follow a strategy to better understand what they should start doing, stop doing, do more of, and do less of. And I love

this exercise because when it is done properly and consistently it can quickly get us back on track. Simple stuff, right? Start, stop, more of, less of. Try it, write it out, and I’ll bet you can quickly come up with three or four things in each area that will help make the coming year so much better for you, your business, your family, or all three.

I love technology. My epiphany around “stopping” and “doing less of ” came a few months ago when I received a notification on my phone alerting me that my screen time for the week had decreased by 32%. Nor- s mally I dismiss pop-up notifications t like that, but for some reason this a captured my attention. The following t week, I received another pop-up noti- s fication showing me that my screen p o time had decreased another 27%. s With this information I decided to look at my calendar, my weekly s i plan, my journal, and my results.

What I realized was that my results y were far greater during this time of o decreased screen time. I was having more real conversations instead h of email or texts, my reading time b was spent in physical books instead b of an e-reader or on my phone, the k i notes in my journal were more meaningful, and what I had written p a inspired some creative thinking. o

More than 45 kids in Douglas County got to participate in the annual “Shop With A Cop” event Dec. 14.

County employees nominated the children and their families who were in need of extra help this holiday season, spokeswoman Lauren Childress said.

The event, sponsored by the Highlands Ranch Walmart, allowed the kids to pick out either a gift for themselves or something for a parent or sibling.

More than 50 employees volunteered at the event. The sheriff ’s office also buys and delivers gifts for about 20 other children who can’t participate in the event, Childress said.

Deputy Cocha Heyden also attended the event for the first time.

“It was very heartwarming to see the connection between law enforcement and the kids in the community,” Heyden said. “The excitement you see in the kids as they shop just makes you feel good to be there with them.”

The annual Shop With A Cop Dec. 14 event was sponsored by the Highlands Ranch Walmart.

Forty-seven kids were able to attend the event where they got to pick out gifts for themselves or their loved ones.

Parents, teachers and others in the community can become better informed about mental health and wellness at an upcoming educational outreach event. Healing Our Youth: Get Educated! is a free panel presentation and resource fair for teachers, school staff, administrators, parents, youth workers and anyone interested in helping to improve the mental wellness of youth.

Sponsored by Highlands Behavioral Health System and hosted by the Douglas County Special Education Advisory Committee, the Healing Our Youth event is Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Cresthill Middle School, 9195 Cresthill Lane, Highlands Ranch.

The resource fair is open from 5:30-9 p.m. and visitors can talk with professionals from the mental health field. The panel presentation starts at 6:30 p.m.

The panel is hosted by the former president of NAMI Arapahoe/ Douglas Counties, who presents a personal look at parenting a child with mental illness and some signs of her son’s illness that she missed. She will be joined by a psychologist, who will discuss teen substance abuse and the effects on a developing brain; a licensed professional counselor, who will discuss how to identify unhealthy adolescent behaviors and treatments available; and a young adult, who will share her journey with a mental disorder.

Research indicates that there is a great need for more information and education on youth mental health in our community. The lack of mental health education is a big cause of the stigma surrounding mental health. The number of youths with mental health and substance use issues and the rate of suicide have increased over the past several years.

‘Vast majority’ of vaping illnesses blamed on vitamin E Doctors are advised to increase monitoring after patients leave hospital

Health officials now blame vitamin E acetate for the “vast majority” of cases in the U.S. outbreak of vaping illnesses and they say doctors should monitor patients more closely after they go home from the hospital.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the updated advice Dec. 20.

And, in a related move Dec. 20, authorities investigating how patients obtained possibly tainted vape products said they have shut down 44 websites advertising the sale of illicit vaping cartridges containing THC. The new medical advice is based on a close look at about 3% of vaping illness patients who returned to the hospital after discharge and seven who died after hospital discharge.

The study suggests that vaping illnesses can get worse, even deadly, after patients leave the hospital and doctors should check on patients within two days of sending them home.

The two-day followup after hospital discharge is shorter than the previ-

ous recommendation of one to two weeks.

Compared to other vaping illness patients, those who went back to the hospital were more likely to have chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or other breathing problems such as sleep apnea. Those who died after hospital discharge were more likely to be 50 or older.

The CDC also released new infor-

mation that continues to point to a culprit: vitamin E acetate, a thickening agent that’s been added to illicit THC vaping liquids. THC is the chemical in marijuana that makes users feel high.

In the strongest language yet about what’s caused the outbreak, Dr. Anne Schuchat of the CDC told reporters during a telephone briefing on Dec. 20 that it is her “conclusion” that vitamin E acetate caused the illness in “the vast majority of patients.”

The nation’s outbreak of vapingrelated lung injuries continues, but new cases are on the decline. More than 2,500 cases of vaping illness have been reported by all 50 states. There have been 54 deaths and more deaths are under investigation.

Interviews with patients and families led investigators to some of the websites that were shut down by the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The agencies did not announce any criminal charges.

The 44 website domains — with names including Stoners Marketplace and Anonymous Meds — now direct visitors to a message in red letters that says “This Site Has Been Seized.”

Investigators have said they are not interested in taking action against individuals who use vaping products, and are focused instead on suppliers.

Some of the websites shut down were scam sites intended to collect money without ever mailing consumers any products, authorities said.

Australian Rules Football player tackles recruiting

ll Sara Rohner wished for during this holiday season was for women to listen to her recruiting pitch.

Rohner has created a women’s Australian Rules Football team called the Centennial Tigers, which is using Willow Creek Park in Centennial for training.

Recruiting players is always a priority for Rohner.

“It’s one of those OVERTIME things that nobody knows how to play it,” admitted Rohner.

“Every year we get a fresh crop of new players because we have to keep recruiting.

“We just start with the basics, since Jim Benton the game is like no other and most women have not played a tackle sport like rugby, so you have to teach every single facet, like how to pass the ball, how to kick the ball, how to catch the ball and how to tackle.”

Rohner, a former rugby player, played for Denver’s other Australian Rules Football team, the Denver Bulldogs. However, she got tired of driving across town for Bulldogs practices and formed the Centennial Tigers.

“We are primarily focused on bringing women in from the south metro area,” said Rohner. “I do a lot of recruiting. A lot of women are iffy about it. They say, `I don’t think so.’

“I just say, `If you don’t like it, I will never ask you to come back.’ But they come back every time because it is such a fun game.”

There are currently 35 women registered to play for the Tigers, who will compete in national USAFL competition during the 2020 season, which starts in May. Australian Rules Football is a fullcontact aerobic sport with no pads. It is played with 18 players on each team on a large oval-shaped field, and points are scored by kicking an oval-shaped ball between goal posts (worth six points) or between goal and behind posts (worth one point).

U.S. National Men’s Australian Rules Football coach Tom Ellis, who lives in Parker, will conduct some clinics in the south metro area to familiarize potential players with the sport.

Rohner welcomes any women who are interested in playing, and training sessions are set for Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings at Willow Creek Park. Player dues are $250 for the season and new players get a $50 discount.

Home field advantage All those regular-season football games that go into gaining good seeds in the playoffs will be more important for 5A teams next season.

The football committee of the Colorado High School Activities Association voted to approve that all playoff games in 5A will be played at the home of the higher seeded team which is a big change in the postseason format.

Class 5A playoff games will be hosted by higher-seeded teams regardless of the number of home games that team has played.

Last season after the first round, the team with the fewest home games would be the home team for quarterfinal and semifinal contests.

Honor roll Each week performances of South Metro athletes and teams will be highlighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches and meets held between Dec. 13 and Dec. 18.

First-year Arapahoe boys basketball coach Troy Pachner won his 400th career game when the Warriors topped Lakewood, 73-44, on Dec. 13. Pachner

is in his 25th year of coaching after stints in California plus at D’Evelyn and Valor Christian. Senior Bryson Stephens scored 16 points for Arapahoe in the win.

Chaparral edged ThunderRidge, 49-47, in a boys basketball contest held on Dec. 14. Dalton Waldron and Joel Speckman II each had 10 points to pace Chap’s balanced attack.

Senior Jana Van Gytenbeek scored 19 points, had six assists and seven steals on Dec. 13 as the Cherry Creek girls basketball team notched a 55-17 win over Mesa Ridge.

Senior Tristan Hurdle of Highlands Ranch scored 20 points in a Dec. 16 boys basketball loss to Columbine.

Seven different players scored in Valor Christian’s 7-1 hockey win over Castle View on Dec. 14. Mason Hoehn had three assists to go along with his goal and finished with four points for the Eagles.

Andrew O’Connor had two goals and Blake Johnson was credited with three assists in Chaparral’s 5-3 hockey victory over Ralston Valley on Dec. 14.
