All for Run, Run for All On Saturday, the highest downhill half marathon in the country — the Slacker Half Marathon — returned to west Clear Creek County.

Dozens of running fanatics, both locals and visitors alike, made the 13mile descent from Loveland Ski Area to downtown Georgetown Saturday morning. Another group of eager daredevils started a 4-mile course at Silver Plume.

The event also featured a threerunner relay.

Last year’s Slacker was suspended because of the pandemic, and several 2020 prospects opted to defer their participation and registration to 2021.

Proceeds from the race will benefit Charlie’s Place, the animal shelter for Clear Creek and Gilpin counties; Evergreen’s Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice; and a local youth activities scholarship fund.

Maria McDaniel was the first woman to cross the finish line in the Slacker Half Marathon on Saturday. Cooler temperatures made for good race conditions for the downhill race that starts at Loveland Ski Area and ends in downtown Georgetown.

Margie Maxine McGraw 1940 - 2020

Margie Maxine McGraw, 80, passed into heaven on May 3,2020 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Born in Denver on February 23,1940 but raised in Georgetown, Colorado, Margie was the eighth child of Leo and Stella Rockwell.

She graduated from Georgetown High School and later moved to Arizona where she dedicated her life to raising her five daughters as a single parent.

She enjoyed gardening, crafts, puzzles, reading and mostly spending time with her 9 grandchildren and

8 great-grandchildren. Margie is survived by her 5 children Darlene (Dennis), Nadine, Christine (Richard), Janine, Kathleen; her grandchildren Aubrey, Sean, Kelsey, Brianna, Tyler, Brittany, Amber, Savanna, Madison and her great grandchildren Ethan, Avery, Milo, Mackenzie, Maverick, Rose, Behrette, and Winnie. She is predeceased by her 7 siblings Leo, Bob, Bill, Ernie, Ferd, Pete and Dorothy. A graveside celebration of life will be held on July 7, 2021 at 11AM at the Georgetown Alvarado Masonic Cemetary.

Idaho Springs denies Habitat townhomes project

Despite staff recommending approval, the Idaho Springs City Council has denied Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity’s application to build eight townhomes in the 1600 block of Virginia Street. The council voted 4-3 at its June 14 meeting to deny the project’s final development plan.

Mayor Mike Hillman and Councilmen Bob Bowland and Chuck Harmon voted to approve the project

while Councilmen John Curtis, Jim Clark, Scott Pennell and Arthur Caccavale voted against.

Caccavale and others felt that, despite the project technically meeting all the requirements in the city code, it was their responsibility to look beyond that and consider what would make the city better or worse.

Public health: low testing giving false picture The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, and state health officials believed that, as of June 22, one in 150 Coloradans was actively infected. However, almost 90% of those cases are unaccounted for because of a drop-off in testing.

According to County Public Health Director Tim Ryan, Clear Creek still offers free weekly testing in Idaho Springs, but it’s underutilized.

“That gives the public a false sense of reality,” he said of low testing numbers across Colorado.

Simultaneously, Ryan said the county’s vaccine clinic attendance has dropped about 50%. In early June, county staff vaccinated about 30-35 individuals in one week; and by midJune, it was closer to 15-18 in a week.

While about 51% of eligible Clear Creek residents are fully vaccinated, Ryan said the COVID-19 Delta variant is more transmissible than the origi-

However, Harmon and Hillman stated the application should be approved because the city couldn’t throw any more roadblocks in front of Blue Spruce after it complied.

“We have a code that is basically our city bible that gives our developers a path to follow. … Future councils can do what they want,” Hillman said, regarding changing city code to require more of future developers. “But, right now, we have a project in front of us, and they followed the requirements on it.”

Since the application was denied, Blue Spruce leadership is deciding how to proceed. The organization bought the property in December 2018 and has been going through the variance and planning process since then.

Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity applied to build eight incomerestricted townhomes for workforce housing at 1628 Virginia St. behind the St. Paul Catholic Church parking lot. The designs showed four duplexes with 20 total parking spaces along Virginia Street.

The public hearing for this case was continued from May 10 to allow the City Council time to investigate and consider residents’ concerns about the project worsening nearby road conditions.

At both the May 10 hearing and at the June 14 continuance, those living along Virginia and Wall streets once again argued against the project, saying it would create a blind corner at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Virginia Street, which they said is already a dangerous intersection.

However, Mike Davenport, an interim city planner, said staff

“Some of these issues raised are beyond what a developer would be required to do or could do,” Davenport said at the June 14 meeting.

Molly Wheelock, a Blue Spruce representative, also agreed that the intersection was dangerous but emphasized the community’s need for affordable housing.

“We are working within the guidelines of the community and the ordinances that have been set up,” she said. “ … The issue of 16th (Avenue) and Virginia (Street) is real and needs to be addressed by the city. I would ask the council to address that as they can.”

During the June 14 hearing, residents stated that once the townhomes were built, the city wouldn’t have the opportunity to correct 16th Avenue. They also worried the townhomes’ shadows would exacerbate icy conditions on Wall Street during colder months.

“Just last winter, I slid all the way into Colorado Boulevard,” resident Rick Scott said of 16th Avenue’s conditions. “… It’s hard to stop even in the summer because of the loose gravel.”

Christina Wienke, who lives directly behind the Blue Spruce property, said she often sees children and elderly people walking in the 16th Avenue and Virginia Street intersection, and she’s worried someone will get hit one day.

“I can’t see from my property down to that intersection if (the townhomes) are there,” she said.

Wheelock reemphasized that Blue Spruce has worked to address the community’s concerns, such as moving parking from the back of the property to the front and decreasing the density from three buildings of three units to four buildings of two.

Georgetown decides against Fourth of July fireworks Annual parade, barbecue confirmed

While Georgetown’s other Fourth of July events are returning, town officials have decided against hosting a fireworks display this year.

Police Judge Lynette Kelsey said the county’s current Stage 1 fire ban, the cost to insure and certify the volunteer operators, and lack of parking near Georgetown Lake were deciding factors.

“Unfortunately, not this year,” Kelsey said at the June 22 Board of Selectmen meeting.

Earlier this month, Cabin Creek Brewing ownership approached the town about donating at least $5,000 in commercial-grade fireworks for the town’s display. The business also offered to help town staff with preparation and clean up.

Craig Abrahamson, resident and Cabin Creek Brewing co-owner, told the selectmen that reviving the fireworks display would provide a two-fold benefit: keep visitors later into the evening to help businesses recover after a rough year and create a fun environment for locals.

“A lot of us remember what Fourth of July looked like,” he said on June 8. “… I feel like my kids have lost that.”

All pyrotechnics, with the exception of municipal-sponsored shows, are banned in Clear Creek County under the Stage 1 fire ban.

During the June 22 meeting, Town Administrator Kent Brown described how Georgetown really needs a professional company to run the show for liability reasons.

While expensive, a professional company’s liability coverage provides the town an extra level of protection. Otherwise, Georgetown would need to have its own, he said, and the Colorado Intergovernmen-

County plans for in-person meetings The county commissioners want Clear Creek to have a high-quality hybrid system before resuming in-person meetings to allow anyone joining remotely to hear and see everything at the meeting, they said during a June 22 work session.

Commissioner Randy Wheelock said some governments have lowerquality systems where virtual attendees aren’t able to hear speakers unless there’s a microphone nearby. He described how Clear Creek’s previous in-person meetings were sometimes free-flowing, which allowed for more engagement but would be difficult for virtual attendees to follow without the proper equipment.

Fourth of July in Idaho Springs will be an afternoon and evening event starting with a party in Citizens Park.

Live music starts at 1 p.m. and includes Bottlerocket Hurricane, Dotsero, Twenty Hands High and Home Slice. There will be food vendors, a beer garden, bounce house, dunk tank and caricature artist.

The evening culminates with fireworks at 9:15 p.m. by Zambelli Fireworks, weather permitting.

The festivities are sponsored by the City of Idaho Springs and the Idaho Springs Chamber of Commerce. tal Risk Sharing Agency has recommended municipalities have $5 million of liability coverage to host a fireworks display.

However, Brown felt that with enough preparation, Georgetown could revive the tradition in 2022 or later. He suggested starting work on it this summer to ensure there is one next year.

He also pointed out that Georgetown could also host fireworks during other holidays, such as New Year’s Eve or Labor Day. Kelsey said that, if the town wants to pursue a holiday fireworks show, the selectmen could include a professional display in the 2022 or future budgets.

Otherwise, Georgetown’s daytime annual Fourth of July events will return this year after COVID-19 regulations threw everything for a loop last summer. The annual parade from City Park to downtown is at 11 a.m. followed by the City Park barbecue at noon. The barbecue is $10 per person.

The CowBoy Band will play from 12:30-2 p.m. at City Park during the barbecue, the Jeffco Brass Band will play from 1-2 p.m. at the Library Stage, the Park County Regulators will host a 2 p.m. show downtown, and Bottlerocket Hurricane will start playing at 3:15 p.m. on the Library Stage. ments’ transition to virtual meetings.

Overall, Wheelock and Commissioner George Marlin said while virtual meetings can be useful, in-person meetings are the best way the public can meet their officials and hold them accountable.

County Manager Brian Bosshardt and other staff members said they would start working on setting up the proper system and keep the commissioners updated.

Bosshardt also explained that the Clerk & Recorder’s Office has requested to use the county’s main meeting room for elections operations in late October and early November.

Bosshardt asked whether the commissioners were OK with resuming virtual-only meetings during that time frame, which still meets legal requirements for hosting public meetings during non-emergencies.

Marlin said as long as the requirement was met, he was OK with holding online-only meetings in late October and early November.

just add a lot of beautification in places where it would not necessarily be,” said Cherie Luke, the garden club’s president. “Plus it gives the public an idea of what can grow at high altitude and what is wildlife resistant. The wildlife, elevation and climate in general are a little different here than down the hill.”

“How pretty the traffic circle (in Bergen Park) is,” Luke said. “Who else would take care of that?”

Each public garden has a leader who recruits volunteers to help with planting and maintaining the gardens. Each garden has a purpose: a firewise rock garden at the Evergreen Fire/Rescue building, a Victorian garden and an herb garden at Hiwan Heritage Park, and

Most of the gardens are joint efforts between the club and a business partner that helps pay for the plants each year, said Annell Hoy, the garden coordinator.

The club had planned to have a community day, which is a fundraiser, last weekend with Master Gardeners stationed to answer questions, but threats of rain sidelined the event. Hoy said another date would be selected in July.

Hoy likes that the club’s public gardens are located throughout Evergreen.

“There are features to see when you come through Bergen Park and as you leave at the dam,” she said.

Police Blotter: Crime Calls from June 14-20 Tuesday, June 15 — Empire police took a report of an antique propane tank being unhooked and stolen from an RV trailer. The police have yet to identify a suspect.

Wednesday, June 16 — Idaho Springs officers responded to a bar for reports of a man being disor-

derly and possibly throwing chairs into the street. Officers had already contacted the man earlier in the night and given him a warning for being disorderly. When officers returned to the bar, they took him to a hospital for medical treatment to help him sober up.

Wednesday, June 16 — Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to locate a missing child. The reporting party stated that her son biked to the store to get milk. After 45 minutes, the boy hadn’t returned.

After a brief search, officers located the child along Colorado Boulevard and gave him a courtesy ride back home.

Sunday, June 20 — Georgetown police responded to a woman calling dispatch and requesting to be taken to jail. Officers arrived and attempted to help her, but she was reportedly acting erratic. Officers determined she needed medical assistant for a possible mental condition, and she was transported to a hospital for additional care.

I keep hearing that the current inability of small businesses to get necessary workers is somehow the product of lazy young people who are fat and happy because of the generosity of the government who has sent them checks during the pandemic induced unemployment.

Old guys like me like to apply our old lessons learned to new problems.

That’s what we do, and I am doing that now. Employers may say, “You don’t understand. It’s different now.

Young people are not the same. We have spoiled them.”

Here goes. … Part of the reason boomers are having trouble getting workers hired is because boomer/ business owners are not appealing to those things that younger workers value. Younger people want a job that is consequential, and has purpose and meaning where the work matters, not just a paycheck.

Back in the day, I had the daunting task of hiring 10,000 new workers to take sales calls for the Sears catalog.

We trained them well, but the training cost was incredibly significant, and if we were to have the typical callcenter turnover, the cost would sink us.

I have been well trained for this challenge. The company Columnist sent me to Disney University for “The Disney approach to customer service,” and it arranged for a look inside of McDonald’s Hamburger University.

The McDonald’s folks taught me to ensure that people were part of a team not just individual employees. They refer to themselves as crew members, and teamwork was embedded in the culture. No one is bigger than the crew. They also found ways to add perks like future education funding, the same idea tht is used by the U.S. military.

and winning my ears was an amazing learning experience. I could not even recap all that I learned, but the most impactful experience was when we were herded into a movie theater.

There on an enormous screen was Walt Disney himself. Mr. Disney told us about the values of the organization and what was expected of each who was about to become a new cast member.

I observed many in tears as they exited. Disney’s business is to make us laugh and cry. They are particularly good at it, but they also touched the soul of their employees.

They are known for the ability to attract the cream of the college-age folks to their Orlando and California operations and to extract extraordinary performance.

That is made possible because of the deep emotional connection they build. It works. Being a cast member of the greatest entertainment organization in the world is not a job, it is a calling.

We implemented what we had

learned, and it worked. People loved their jobs as consultants and were deeply motivated when they understood that their allegiance was equally divided between the company and the customers.

They were empowered to bring together the customer’s needs and the company’s offerings. Any rules we had were developed not by managers but by teams called focus groups.

The driving force was to constantly ask, “Would our customers thank us for this suggestion?” If not, do not make it. The organization was cost effective and more importantly customer effective. Sales grew, and our consultants were the reason.

I know that small businesses do not have the resources Sears or Disney had, but I read every day about small businesses who have the creativity to make people feel that they are part of something special.

Pay people well not just with cash but with a vision that fills their soul, and good workers will appear like Disney magic.

The Start and Spread of Wildfire in the Wildland Urban Interface The wildland-urban interface (WUI), defined as the area where houses are in or near wildland vegetation, is where wildfires pose the greatest risk to people due to the proximity of flammable vegetation.

Wildfires frequently burn houses in the WUI and are most difficult to fight there.

Furthermore, the WUI is where people often ignite wildfires, and the vast majority of fires are humancaused. While fires are an integral part of many ecosystems as a whole, humans have changed wildfire environments throughout the Rocky Mountains, and climate change will increase fire frequency in the future.

Though a natural part of the Rocky Mountains, fire is one of the most feared, fought and controversial components of our physical environment. The landscapes of the Rocky Mountains have been shaped by frequent wildfires for thousands of years.

The role of fire in these ecosystems is evident from studies of past vegetation, fire scars on trees, the even-aged character of most forests and records of explorers. Until the beginning of the 1900s, wildfire burned through the forests of the Rocky Mountain West at fairly regular intervals and was a natural component of fire-dependent ecosystems.

Today, as more people build homes in the WUI, they become part of the growing risk for wildfire destruction. Wildfire is viewed as an undesirable natural phenomenon that can destroy homes and property and

place lives at risk. But wildfire is a natural part of Rocky Mountain West ecosystems.

Residents living in the WUI should learn to view wildfire the same way residents in other parts of the country view tornadoes, floods and hurricanes — as natural phenomena that can devastate property and life — and prepare accordingly.

How do wildfires start?

The conditions do not have to be too crazy for a wildfire to start.

Wildfires can start with something as random and unpredictable as a lightning strike hitting a tree.

Even for a lightning strike, the conditions need to be right for the spark to really catch hold. A fire needs an igniter, some fuel and strong wind. Besides a random strike of lightning, forest fires can also be ignited by: • Powerlines: When a powerline is hit by some high winds or a car crashing into it, the lines break. As the lines are broken, there is usually some sort of large spark, enough to ignite a flame that can spread to the rest of the forest.

• Arson: Unfortunately, sometimes a forest fire can break out because someone purposely started it. Arson has been identified as the cause of many wildfires in Colorado.

• Campfires: If a campfire is not put out correctly, or if it was made in a spot where it is illegal to start a campfire, the embers can be blown from the pit and onto a pile of dead vegetation.

• Cigarettes: Cigarettes starting wildfires are common along roads as burning cigarettes are discarded.

• Other human-related causes: While we use the term wildfire, a lot of these fires are not started by random natural events, but the introduction of humans and our technologies into a forest setting.

(Editor’s Note: This time of year, we certainly have to mention fireworks in this category.)

Wildfires are driven by three basic components: weather, fuel and topography. Together, these three items affect the likelihood of fire starting, how fast it moves, its power and difficulty to control.

Weather Dry, hot and windy weather increases the likelihood of a major wildfire.

These conditions make ignition easier, help fuels burn more rapidly and increase fire intensity.

High windspeeds, in particular, can transform a small, easily controlled fire into a catastrophic event. The East Troublesome Fire in Grand County in 2020 is an example of the impact of winds on the spread of fire. The East Troublesome Fire grew 100,000 acres in 24 hours. High winds, erratic winds and changing wind/humidity conditions are of great concern for firefighters.

Fuel Fuel is required for any fire to burn. In a wildfire, fuels are usually living vegetation (trees, shrubs,

brush, grass) and dead plant materials. Homes, when in the path of wildfire, can become fuel. The quantity, size, moisture content, arrangement and other fuel characteristics influence the ease of ignition, rate of fire spread, length of flames and other fire behavior.

Topography Of all types of topographic features, steepness of slope is among the most influential on fire behavior.

The steeper the slope, the faster a fire will spread. Other important factors are: • Aspect –south and southwest slopes usually have more fires • Chimneys –steep, narrow drainage The Colorado wildfires of 2020, destroying hundreds of homes and killing several people, were driven by high winds. Wind will blow and spread the embers onto new piles of kindling until the whole forest is aflame.

In addition to the wind, wildfires will burn better going uphill. The heat from the flames will warm the trees and other fuels, making them more readily available to burn as the fire steadily approaches. Once wildfires have wind to push them along and they are exposed to the right topography, the glowing red inferno will burn everything in its path from beautiful, centuries-old forests to our neighborhoods in the foothills.

Clear Creek’s Anika McKown has taken herself to new heights this summer.

On Thursday, she took home the third-place medal in the Class 2A high jump after she cleared 5 feet at the state track and field meet in Lakewood. Anika, who competed as a junior, said she felt really good about the feat.

“I was hoping for a new (personal record),” she said. “I wasn’t expecting third.”

Earlier this season, Anika cleared 5-foot 1-inch, which is now the school record for girls high jump.

The event can be challenging, she said. It requires getting in a lot of high steps while moving in a curve toward the bar, slowing down as she jumps, arching over the bar and

then landing in such a way that she doesn’t hurt herself.

Managing all those things simultaneously is the most difficult aspect, she said, adding, “You can’t overthink it.”

Anika also competed in the

400-meter dash and the sprint medley relay, placing 13th and 15th, respectively.

Idaho Springs’ Rebecca McKown said her daughter’s feats Thursday were incredible, and she was very proud of her. Competing so late into

the summer meant juggling other obligations, Rebecca said, describing how Anika left her summer camp early to be at the state meet.

State track a day of small victories for Golddiggers

Outgoing sophomore Bode Baker ran his best race of the year Thursday afternoon, and although he joked that he says that after every race, this time it was spot on.

When Baker and his fellow Golddiggers took to Lakewood’s Jeffco Stadium track for the 4x200 meter relay, the venue was truly alive.

Thousands of people were in the stands with hundreds of voices and dozens of hands making noise as the athletes sprinted around the circuit. Having that many people watching and cheering — especially after a year-plus of no large crowds — was crazy, Baker said.

Eight Clear Creek track and field athletes competed at the state meet Thursday, participating in four events for Class 2A. While no one advanced to the finals on Friday and Saturday, the Golddiggers still found small victories.

demands on a student-athlete.

Rebecca thanked the entire community, especially the coaches, for supporting Anika and her fellow athletes this season. “(Community members) make it possible for them to do these things,” she said.

Brian Inman, Clear Creek’s head track and field coach, expressed how proud he was of Anika for accomplishing all of her goals, saying she wanted to go to state in high jump and a relay event.

Inman described Anika as a driving force behind not only the relay team’s success this season, but the entire track and field program’s.

“Anika set the tone for the younger athletes,” Inman said, explaining that she’s one of the most experienced athletes the Golddiggers have. “… She’s going to be a force to reckon with next year in any event she wants to do.”

Anika McKown, who competed in the relay, placed third in the high jump and 13th in the 400-meter dash.

Her time in the latter event was 1:05.8, a personal record.

The boys 4x200 meter relay team, which entered the competition as 18th in the state, placed 10th.

Coach Brian Inman said sprinter Kylie Lynch, who was scheduled to compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, couldn’t because of a hamstring injury.

Outgoing freshman Sharlynne McKown, who took Lynch’s place in the relay, said she was happy the team finished in the top 15. Overall, she felt the season had gone well, but Clear Creek probably would’ve performed better under a regular schedule.

Inman noted how the boys relay team had improved, as the final time of 1:35.9 was the team’s best of the season. Plus, all four members are set to return next year.

Baker said this was his first year doing track as he also plays baseball in the spring. He wants to return next season and improve on Thursday’s performance.

“It went better than any of us could’ve expected,” he said of the relay.

Both Inman and Baker expressed their pride in all the Golddiggers’ performances at state, with Baker saying, “Everyone came out to compete.”

Advocates discuss safeguards to limit exposure to sun’s rays

C

oloradans love to tout the state’s sunshine with the warmth and mood boost it provides, but the sun’s rays also are something to be reckoned with, especially as we get into the swing of summer.

Skin-care experts and doctors say the two biggest issues are preventing skin cancer and implementing anti-aging measures, especially since the sun’s ultraviolet light can be so damaging.

“A healthy dose of sunlight is really good for our bodies because our bodies make vitamin D,” said Brooke Sarmiento, founder and creator of Bee-Och skin-care products based in Fort Lupton. “(Sunlight) boosts mood, helps boost immunity and can ward off infections.”

However, too much sunlight is not a good thing, the experts said, noting that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States than all other cancers combined.

In addition, sun can damage skin, causing it to age prematurely. Ultraviolet rays penetrate into the skin, damaging the elastic fibers that keep skin firm and accelerating production of the pigment melatonin, allowing wrinkles to develop and age spots to appear.

Neither is good for skin, which is the body’s largest organ, and both are mostly preventable.

Skin cancer The Skin Cancer Foundation and the Colorado Melanoma Foundation preach constantly about the benefits of sunscreen every day, not just when you are planning a day in the sun. Even better, wear a hat and clothing to keep skin from sun exposure or stay out of the sun as much as possible, especially during the hottest part of the day.

Not all sunscreens are created equal, the experts say, and it’s important for people to follow the directions.

The Skin Cancer Foundation offers a seal of recommendation on sunscreens and other skincare products that have an SPF — which stands for sun protection factor — of at least 15. SPF is a calculation of the difference between how quickly the skin will burn in the sun without the product and with the product. The higher the number, the longer the skin is protected.

There are two types of sunscreens: chemical and mineral.

Anti-aging It’s important to take care of your skin and to educate yourself about the products you use, said Jennifer Morris of the Littleton area, who sells Beautycounter products.

“Just because it’s on the shelf (in the store) doesn’t mean that it’s good for you,” Sarmiento added.

Skin-care advocates suggest learning about the products’ ingredients because not all lotions, soaps and sunscreens are created equal.

“I’m huge on waterless products,” Sarmiento said, noting that the moisturizers she has created use essential oils that absorb into the skin. “Oil-based products provide longer hydration because it’s not just water and alcohols.”

Morris and Sarmiento suggested staying away from products with fragrances because most are chemically created rather than created from natural sources.

A healthy respect for the sun — both its positive and its negative attributes — is a must during the summer to make the most of the Colorado outdoors.

A look at new Clear Creek businesses Clear Creek County has welcomed several new businesses over the past few months.

In downtown Georgetown, Justin and Tyler Fukae opened a boutique to sell home, bath and body products that are sustainable and locally made.

Also in downtown Georgetown, after months of renovating the building and buying items for the business, Ron and Terri Grady opened 511 Rose, which combines restaurant and retail into one venture. Along with a full kitchen and some alcohol, all of the furniture and decor in the building is for sale.

Just down Interstate 70, in downtown Idaho Springs, Two Brothers Deli has opened a bookstore in the adjoining storefront. One Door Down offers a variety of books, games and gifts, along with smoothies, cocktails and coffee.

Topic: Wastewater System Project Needs Assessment

A public hearing will be conducted for informing citizens and soliciting public input, written or oral, regarding the recent Project Needs Assessment (PNA) that was conducted on the St. Mary’s Glacier Wastewater Collection System and Treatment Plant. The PNA evaluated the condition of the existing wastewater system infrastructure and provided recommendations for improvements.

The PNA was then submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) for comment and approval. Comments have been received from CDPHE and responses have been crafted.

Recommendations presented in the PNA include the rehabilitation and replacement of various facilities to include:

• Approximately 16,000 lineal feet of 8”, 10”, and 12” of the worst condition sanitary sewer pipelines and manholes to reduce Infiltration and Inflow into the system • Install new metals removal treatment capabilities at the WWTF • Replace the existing Headworks Facility at the WWTF • Replace all existing pumps and blowers at the WWTF • Build new laboratory and chemical feed and handling areas to improve public health and safety • Provide electrical system improvements including emergency power generation • Install proper HVAC in the WWTF • Miscellaneous Process and Compliance Improvements at the WWTF At this initial level of project development, preliminary costs for the project are summarized as follows: Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements $1,703,048 Wastewater Collection System Improvements $1,426,438 Bonds/Insurance/General Conditions $219,064 Contingency (20%) $625,897 Contractor Overhead and Profit (10%) $312,949 WWTF Total Construction Cost $4,287,395 Planning and Design Engineering Services (10%) $429,000 Construction Phase Engineering Services (5%) $215,000 Total Estimated Project Cost $4,931,395
