Interstate 76 east of Brighton is much more friendly to electric vehicles after United Power added an EV charging station at the Keenesburg Market Street Shell Gas Station.

Travelers can charge up with one of the most powerful EVs stations on the corridor.

“The project is in partnership with Kleve Enterprises which owns Market Street Shell Gas Station and United Power. We had strategically selected this area, given there is a dead zone of about 50 miles where there’s no charging available between Fort Morgan and Brighton.

So, we selected this area to try and help provide additional infrastructure for EV drivers and also for United Power,” Joel Danforth Energy Programs and New Business Director for United Power.

United Power planned to make sure there was infrastructure to service the members in Weld County with an EV charging station. It was the reason why they chose the Market Shell Gas Station in Keenesburg.

it takes up to an hour to fully charge the vehicle. The EV charges by the kilowatt-hour and there is a connection fee.

Also, the charging station is on the Charge Point Network, so an account can be set up using the mobile app or an activation card will be mailed.

David Robles 1968 - 2021

The Robles family and the Hot Wheels community are saddened by the sudden loss of David Robles on January 4th, 2021. He passed peacefully at his home in Mason City, Iowa.

David lived life by his own rules. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and fellow collector who lived 1000 years in the 52 calendar years he was on this earth. He paved his own way leaving his own mark, writing his own story. An obituary is the place we inscribe that story in the book of forever.

As his story goes: He was born in Lubbock, Texas to Juan and Guadalupe (Serna) Robles in 1968 with him being the 3rd out of 4 sons to that union. The family moved to Ft Lupton, Colorado where he went to school and college majoring in auto body because of the love of cars he shared with his dad. In 1994, he gambled and married Barbara Ann Rose in Las Vegas, Nevada. That union took them to Mason City, Iowa where Dave was employed initially by Titan Tire in Ventura and then for Land o Lakes Purina in Mason City for over 20 years. In 1992, shortly after the birth of their son Jonathan, Dave began collecting Hot Wheels which soon turned into a passion that led the family of 3 to be included into a much larger crazy loving Hot Wheels

family that spans the globe. The bonds of love and friendship that grew through this hobby was remarkable. He was so thankful and felt blessed for the many collectors that he considered brothers and sisters in our Hot Wheels family.

Left to cherish his memory, share his story and play with his toy cars are his wife-Barb, son-Jonathan, mother-Guadalupe, and brothers-Juan Jr (Guadalupe) and family, Jaime and Eduardo. Also celebrating his life would be Grandfather Crespin Serna plus many aunts, uncles and cousins, his father in law-Herbert Rose and Barb’s siblings and their families.

David was preceded in death by his father Juan Robles and very special grandmother, Carmen Serna.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 29th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fort Lupton Recreation Center 203 S. Harrison Fort Lupton, Colorado. Please join us for food and beverage as we will be gathering to celebrate the life of an amazing husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.

Parents should weigh COVID risk for kids Summer plans could raise chance of children getting disease

These are heady times for parents in Colorado who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. A summer of possibility sprawls out ahead: travel, visits with family, ball games with friends.

But this optimism is colliding head-on with a reminder that, while vaccinated adults are well-protected against infection, their unvaccinated children are not.

The state’s fourth wave of coronavirus cases is being driven by the young.

People age 19 and younger currently make up more than a quarter of all new cases in the state — the group’s highest proportion of the pandemic.

Outbreaks in schools are growing.

Cases among high school and middle school students are rising faster than among any other age group.

“Their rate is much higher than what we’re seeing on average for adults, and the increase we’re seeing is pretty steep at this point,” Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state epidemiologist, said last week.

So does this mean parents need to dial back their families’ post-vaccination plans to boring from roaring?

Not quite, said Dr. Sam Dominguez, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. But parents

who have less concern about their own health now that they’re vaccinated will need to continue taking precautions to protect their kids.

“I think we need to think about kids in the same way we think about unvaccinated individuals,” Dominguez said.

In other words: Kids too young to be vaccinated still need to be cautious about socializing in large groups, eating indoors or having close contact with other unvaccinated people.

Good and bad news The pandemic has already been difficult for parents trying to understand the risks posed to their children.

Kids are much less likely to suffer a severe illness if they are infected with the coronavirus. People age 19 and younger make up less than 0.2% of the state’s COVID-19 deaths and only about 3% of the state’s total coronavirus hospitalizations.

“Overall kids are doing much better than their adult counterparts in this pandemic,” Dominguez said.

This has caused some experts to argue that the risk calculations should be different when it comes to kids and adults. The well-known economist Emily Oster has said that parents should think of their children as being like vaccinated adults, when it comes to the risk of getting really sick.

Though it’s rare, kids can suffer serious consequences from COVID-19.

Colorado has seen several dozen cases of coronavirus-related multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, a life-threatening condition. Others have experienced long-term symptoms,

Rocky Mountain Arsenal Draft Five-Year Review Report Available for Public Comment The U.S. Army recently prepared its fifth Five-Year Review (FYR) draft final report for Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA). The FYR process covers a statutory and policy review of RMA's 1995 Off-Post and 1996 On-Post Records of Decision (RODs). The RODs provide detailed descriptions of the cleanup approach selected for the site.

The purpose of the FYR is to determine whether RMA's environmental cleanup continues to be protective of public health and the environment. A critical part of the FYR is to determine if changes to environmental standards have occurred and to determine if the remedy outlined in the RODs and subsequent decision documents remains protective in light of new standards.

FYRs at RMA will be required for the foreseeable future, since the cleanup approach included on-site landfills and consolidation areas to hold contaminated waste from RMA's cleanup. These areas total approximately 1,000 acres and are managed and monitored by the U.S. Army.

In keeping with its commitment to public involvement, the Army is seeking input on this report. All public comments received in writing by July 2, 2021, will be reviewed and considered in the final report as part of RMA’s site record.

More easily transmissible coronavirus variants have become the dominant forms of the virus spreading in the state. Herlihy, the state epidemiologist, estimated last week that the B.1.1.7. variant, which was first identified in the United Kingdom, now accounts for roughly 50% of the state’s cases.

While Dominguez said there is no evidence yet that the variants hit kids harder than the virus’s original forms, he said the fact that they are more transmissible will likely lead to faster, wider spread among unvaccinated people, driving case counts higher.

And that will naturally lead to more hospitalizations, including in kids.

Dominguez said Children’s Hospital Colorado has already seen an uptick in hospitalizations for COVID-19 as cases have risen in the community.

Navigating summer socializing Dominguez recommends that unvaccinated children follow the same public health guidance for unvaccinated adults. (The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has created a handy chart.)

This means trying to keep most social activities outdoors. Unvaccinated people attending a small, outdoor social gathering with fully vaccinated friends or family don’t even need to wear a mask. But outdoor dining with people from multiple households is considered risky for the unvaccinated, and attending crowded outdoor events, like a concert or a ball game, is even riskier.

Small indoor events require the familiar precautions — masks and distance. It’s probably best to forgo large indoor events.

Dominguez said the same precautions that apply for kids in social gatherings should also apply in places like summer camps.

“I think we all want to get out and start doing different things,” Dominguez said. “But I think we need to think of kids as being in the unvaccinated group and following guidelines.”

There is good news, though. Currently, kids as young as 16 can receive the coronavirus vaccine made by Pfizer, and Dominguez said he hopes the ability to socialize more freely will be a strong inducement for older teens to get the shot.

Pfizer has asked federal regulators to approve its vaccine for use in kids as young as 12 — a request regulators could grant as soon as next week.

Pfizer and another vaccine maker, Moderna, are also conducting clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccines in kids as young as 6 months old.

So it’s likely that children will one day be able to join their parents among the fully vaccinated. Until then, Dominguez recommends playing it safe.

“They don’t get as sick as adults do,” Dominguez said of kids. “But we also know it’s not zero risk.”

Regis University to host camp for homeless School partnering with city, Colorado Village Collaborative, St. Francis Center

Regis University will host a safe outdoor space at its northwest Denver campus for people experiencing

homelessness starting June 1, the school announced May 5.

The private Jesuit university will partner with the Colorado Village Collaborative, the St. Francis Center and the city to create a 19,000-square-foot space at a campus parking lot at 50th Avenue and Federal Boulevard. The site will provide 24-hour staffing and shelter for up to 60 people, who will be selected by the agencies involved. The site will be open for six months.

It’s the fourth safe outdoor space in Denver.

Planes collide over state park, no one injured Aircraft were on approach to land at Centennial Airport

Two small airplanes collided over Cherry Creek State Park on the morning of May 12 as they prepared to land at Centennial Airport, one of the nation’s busiest general aviation airports.

No one was killed or injured.

One aircraft with two people aboard crash-landed roughly four miles north of Centennial airport in Cherry Creek State Park while the other, which had just one occupant, landed safely at the airport.

Air traffic control recordings and flight tracking websites show the planes collided as they both turned toward Centennial Airport’s parallel runways.

The plane that landed safely was a Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner operated by Key Lime Air. FlightAware.com records show the Metroliner, a twin-engine propeller plane, was headed to Centennial Airport from Salida.

The plane that crashed was a Cirrus SR-22, which had taken off from Centennial Airport about an hour earlier and was heading back to the airport after flying up to the Fort Collins area, according to FlightAware records.

The Cirrus pilots were warned not to veer too far to the east and stay toward the west end of Cherry Creek Reservoir as they turned their plane south to line up to land. Air traffic control warned the Cirrus that the Metroliner was nearby.

Moments later, the planes collided.

“Looks like the right engine failed so I’m going to continue my landing,” the Metroliner’s pilot said, apparently not realizing the collision had happened.

Another pilot called air traffic controllers to say they saw the Cirrus with its parachute deployed floating down to the ground, indicating there was a collision.

South Metro Fire Rescue and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office responded to the collision.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash.

“Initial report indicates collision happened as airplanes were landing,” the NTSB tweeted. “The NTSB will travel to the scene.”

Old Dominion Freight, North America’s largest truckload carrier, needs to hire 10 truck drivers and numerous dock workers. Individuals with Class A CDL license are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

“The open positions include local pickup and delivery drivers and line haul drivers with the average pay ing, under current rules. The bill removes this regulation and allows the bureau to continue denying the transfer if the bureau is unable to make a final decision in a case that is no longer in pending status.

News Briefs Fallen officer memorial The late Commerce City Detective Curt Holland will be among police officers honored during the Weld County Fallen Officer Memorial ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Bittersweet Park, 35th Avenue and 16th Street, Greeley.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office hosts this ceremony each year to honor peace officers throughout the country who died in the line of duty.

In 2020, there were 362 peace officers who died on the job, which is up from 150 in 2019. The stark increase is attributable to the pandemic, as 234 officers died due to Coronavirus-related health complications, according to a press statement. Three of those officers were from Colorado -- El Paso County Deputy Sheriff Jeffrey C. Hopkins, April 1, 2020; Larimer County Department of Natural Resources Ranger Brendan P. Unitt, Aug. 20; and Holland, Oct. 16.

Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event. He will be joined by several local chiefs of police who will help read the names of 2020’s fallen officers. The event also will feature a flag raising ceremony, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”

No Memorial Day parade Commerce City will not play host to the state’s largest Memorial Day parade for the second year in a row, thanks to coronavirus.

Instead, the plan in conjunction with the Commerce City Veterans Commission is to honor those who have died in service of their country with a Memorial Day program at Veterans Memorial Park, 6015 Forest Drive.

The ceremony will include a color guard, the national anthem, a wreath laying, and more. Details will be posted at c3gov.com/parade.

ACHS girls tennis: Low on numbers, long on desire, enthusiasm

Like a lot of high-school coaches, Adams City’s tennis coach is happy to be playing this spring.

Norma Rodriguez’ charges managed to play one match last year before coronavirus shut everything down. This year, the impacts of the virus are easy to see – shortened preseason practice, smaller turnout. But she and the rest of the Eagles are happy to be back on the court.

“Normally, we have about 30 girls.

This year, we have 13,” Rodriguez said. “COVID is most of it. I’m thankful for the girls who came out.

I love their determination to get as much playing time in as they can.

Last year, our season was cur short.

They want to do the best they can.”

There’s also the normal issue of spring weather.

“We’ve had a lot of struggles,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve had to deal with COVID. We have to put up with Mother Nature. We’ve had two on-court practices. That’s all we’ve had.” In one case last week, the Eagles wanted to practice in the school gym. But it was in use.

Her three singles players – Lesly Tevillo, Karina Arriaga and Lizbeth Parra – are seniors and three-year starters.

“The No. 1 and No. 2 singles players (Tevillo and Arriaga) were a doubles team when they started playing for me,” Rodriguez said.

“Having them helps as far as leadership and explaining scoring and ground strokes. The leadership they show is amazing. They are amazing student-athletes as well.”

Tevillo won her match against Hinkley’s Luz-Maria Arroyo 6-3, 6-1 in Commerce City May 12. Arriaga swept to a 6-0, 6-0 win over HHS’ Julia Mirita at No. 2 singles. Parra won her No. 3 singles match against Michelle Gallardo of the Thunderbirds 6-2, 6-3.

Rodriguez would like to see her team improve its footwork.

“That’s our big thing. We tend to get into a good spot, and then we don’t move,” Rodriguez said. “The girls just find a way to get stuck, so we need to work on our footwork bigtime.”

The Eagles didn’t win any of the four doubles matches. Leiah Arrandazola and Jocelyn Rico-Sullivan got past ACHS’ Kenia Prieto and Alexa Ramirez 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 4 doubles, the Thunderbirds’ Breana Remigio and Eh Moo defeated Adams City’s Jovana Meraz and Luna Torres 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.

The next match, weather and pandemic permitting, is against Northglenn at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in Commerce City.

“They all love the game,” Rodriguez said. “The team is like a family.

They get along well. That’s the big thing. With them, I never have to worry about their academics. They didn’t get a season last year. But they still love the game.”

Norse rally for one-run win over T-Hawks

NORTHGLENN – It has been a slow start to the 2021 baseball season for the Northglenn High School, but Saturday the Norse got their bats going to pick up their first win of the season.

Northglenn rallied back from an early deficit to top rival Prairie View 4-3 to open the Eastern Metro Athletic Conference play with a victory.

“We have a lot of pop in our lineup,” Northglenn coach Chris Mann said. “When they do find the barrel, we can do some damage.”

Facing a 3-1 deficit the Norse started to find their pop in the bottom of the fifth inning. Northglenn did the damage with three doubles in a row.

With two outs, Omar Arrieta started the rally with a deep hit to center field. He then scored when Robbie Brown-Lee found a hole behind second base. Zach Leal tied the game up with his RBI double to score Brown-Lee. Northglenn took the lead in the sixth when catcher Ethan Hotz hit a double off the center-field wall to score Quintin Scoggins.

“They really had a great approach at the plate and waited for their pitch,” Mann said. “It is a big to start conference 1-0, especially against a team like Prairie View that is going to be really good this year.”

The ThunderHawks did their damage in the fourth and fifth innings.

Trevor Devincenzi hit an RBI double to score Nicholas Brainerd in the fourth, and then Anthony Rivera scored on an error in the fifth and CJ Schomaker hit an RBI double to left field to score Wyatt Waterhouse to give PVHS a 3-1 advantage.

Northglenn (1-3 overall, 1-0 EMAC) dropped three non-conference games before starting league play.

The Norsemen host Hinkley at 4 p.m. Friday, May 21.

“We used those non-league games for warmup because, unfortunately, we weren’t able to play any spring training league games,” Mann said.

Colorado to host nation’s first ‘drone soccer’ tournaments Effort takes off in partnership with Wings Over the Rockies, training camps in Centennial area

The idea of “drone soccer” may be difficult to picture, but the obscure sport appears poised to make an entrance into the public eye.

“What we’re doing is highly educational and teaches career skills, and that’s really valuable, especially for young people who are figuring out what they want to study,” said Kyle Sanders, the vice president for U.S. Drone Soccer, the national representative for the sport.

Drone soccer is an electronic, educational “e-sport” where participants build, program, learn to fly and repair drones, Sanders said. A team sport, participants play using racing drones surrounded by plastic exoskeletons. In a netted arena with a hoop on either end, teams try to prevent opponents from flying into their hoop by blocking their drones and crashing into them, Sanders said.

The Rocky Mountain State Games — an event that Sanders called the largest multisport event in the state — is hosting the first statewide tournament for drone soccer, tentatively set to start July 31 at Coronado High School in Colorado Springs.

The Rocky Mountain games are “like a mini-Olympics,” Sanders said.

“That includes for athletes with physical disabilities and other events.”

U.S. Drone Soccer launched in Colorado with the first academic program adopted at Coronado High School, according to the games’ event website.

The upcoming state games will also be the first public tournament in North America for drone soccer, according to Sanders.

“There have been international competitions in other countries,” but nothing in North America, Sanders said. “It’ll be available, there will be competitions, in rest of the country by the end of the year.”

“There are different categories, level one and level two. Level one will plug into your standard home wall outlet with 110 volts. A level two charger is an upgrade similar to a clothes dryer or a hot tub. Also, you’ll need to hire an electrician to have it installed. But it will charge a vehicle in about four hours.

Currently, United Power installed its first charging station at its coal creek office in 2019. If this station is successful, United Power leadership will evaluate and come up with a good solid business plan to add additional charging locations for its growing network. In Weld County, there are about 500 EV stations.

U.S. Drone Soccer is introducing new academic and community leagues across the country and serves as national representatives to the World Air Sports Federation, according to the state games’ event website.

The rise of the sport has also landed it in the Denver metro area, collaborating with Wings Over the Rockies — a nonprofit that works to educate about aviation and space — and the nonprofit’s Exploration of Flight campus, where flight enthusiasts can have fun but also learn about aerospace in general. The Exploration of Flight campus sits at Centennial Airport in the south metro area.

On May 1, the Exploration of Flight said, “It’s a relatively new gift to celebrate this great event. When you look back at the history of vehicles, we are finally moving to a place that we have electricity everywhere.

We just need to get the charging stations everywhere. That is a big evolution that’s going on now. It has been going on actually for 30 years, but we’re finally catching up to the need for charging with the availability of the electric vehicles.”

Keenesburg Mayor Ken Gefeller said, “It is great to see the progress and the new technology coming to Keenesburg and the growth is wonderful.”

Brighton Mayor Greg Mills said,” This is good for the whole I -76 corridors. But there’s a lot of gaps along the corridor between Keenesburg and Nebraska and this will help.”

New training sessions are to occur from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday on specific weeks in June and July.

Registrants may use Wings’ equip-

ment or purchase discounted equipment, according to the news release.

The intent is for camp participants to play in the state games, said Sanders, who is also a program manager with Wings Over the Rockies.

The drone soccer training camps cost $485 to participate in, but that includes the purchase of the drone equipment, Sanders said. Cost comes to $300 if participants don’t want to keep the equipment. Discounts are available, Sanders added.
