Colorado has made its giant leap towards the future of passenger space travel to Europe within an hour by 2028.

Communication key for Adams County Latino population With COVID-19 impact heavy on community, information more crucial than assistance

As the impacts of COVID-19 fall disproportionately on Adams County’s Latino residents, community advocates and leaders are calling for better information that can be shared with residents.

“The way I describe COVID and what it did to our communities is when you’re at the beach and the tide brings in the water and it takes it back out. It exposed all the shells and the rocks. COVID did that, where you see the social issues that are kind of buried,” said Maria Zubia, director of community outreach at Kids First Health Care.

Since March, more than 14,500 Hispanic and Latino people in Adams County have tested positive for COVID-19, according to TriCounty Health Department. That represents 48 percent of all cases in the county, even though 41% of the county identifies as Hispanic and Latino, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. White residents account for 11 percent of cases in the county, and Black and Asian residents both represent about 1 percent of cases, according to Tri-County. Thirtyseven percent of residents didn’t disclose demographic information for COVID-19 tests.

The virus’s disproportionate spread yields disproportionate effects, Zubia said. There are many uninsured Latino residents in the county who are unable to receive adequate healthcare.

Community members are hoping for more resources to be available for Latino people. However, with a present scarcity of resources, and a pending reduction in federally funded programs, leaders say communication is all the more crucial for tens of thousands of people needing assistance.

The financial weight is equally heavy, described Maria Gonzalez, founder and CEO of the nonprofit Adelante Community Development.

Adelante is working with people who have permanently closed small businesses they owned, as well as undocumented people who aren’t eligible for government services.

The community leaders said more resources are needed but they recognize that won’t change overnight.

Plus, cities are nearing deadlines for spending federal money they received from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. It’s uncertain whether Congress will approve another stim-

ulus package by the end of the year.

Even when Tri-County Health, Adams County and the cities reach Latino residents with good information, it’s not always culturally relevant, Zubia said. For example, she said people might understand a ban on indoor gatherings to apply to church services, but not family gatherings.

A diesel fuel spill near the Suncor Refinery Business Center in Commerce City forced a road closure on Dec. 4. As of press time, officials did not release a cause.

It happened around 6:15 a.m. Authorities were able to isolate the pipelines in the area, according to a press statement. Representatives from Magellan Midstream Partners, emergency responders and other industry members were on the scene for most of the day Dec. 4.

The Adams County District Attorney’s Office filed vehicular homicide charges in connection with an October crash that killed a Commerce City police officer and another woman.

Northglenn has done something similar and Westminster has created an email list of nonprofits that the city sends messages to with information that those partners can relay to residents.

Partnering with nonprofits or having Spanish-speaking staff members are examples of effective communication, Gonzalez and Zubia said.

There needs to be more of it, though they said.

Bilingual fliers aren’t enough, Gonzalez said, “You have to build trust with the Latino community.”

She also applauded outside investors from both countries.

“This is a company with significant investor’s expertise and support,” she said. “I want to congratulate PD Aerospace for their ongoing commitment to the research and testing during these challenging times and I want to say welcome to Adams County.”

Commissioner Chaz Tedesco said the agreement has been a long time coming.

“This is a tremendous day. Today’s announcement is the result of creating and building relationships with the right people and the right partners for our communities and Colorado Air and Spaceport will be taking the next step with PD Aerospace,” Tedesco said. “We continue to receive inquiries from other space-related companies here in Colorado and around the country and the world. We know this is an important next step for PD Aerospace and our team here in Adams County. And of course, the incredible staff at Colorado Air and Spaceport. Thank you very much.”

What are the plans for PD Aerospace?

The first phase is the development of the engine, the next phase is to design the airplane which would a sub-orbital for horizontal taking-off and landing and reusable with a new Concept X engine and a communication system. It will hold six passengers and two pilots to operate the plane. The testing site will be on the small island of Shimoji-Shima, Japan.

PD Aerospace will start testing and its business operations in 2024 at the spaceport. The official rollout could be 2028.

“We are developing the reusable winged rocket and jet of the spaceplane. We are looking forward to maximizing space utilization for private sector demand such as space tourism. Transportation is our key technology. It is the combustion mode feature which changes from jet to rocket mode. It was patented in 2012,” said Ogawa.

course, is the number two aerospace economy in the country. They are lots of aerospace jobs here with nine of the prime aerospace companies, and over 500 other aerospace companies with suppliers in our proximity.

It’s kind of an industry ecosystem,” Ruppel added.

According to Ruppel, Colorado aerospace infrastructure, 190,290 are employed in space-related jobs.

And $3.5 billion in Colorado’s payroll. Colorado is the third-highest awardee of NASA prime contacts.

Also, it is a location of choice for other international companies such as Astroscale and Ispace.

The future goal is for space tourism, point-to-point travel. Also, the spaceplanes would do deliveries to the space station such as payloads and satellites. Also, micro-gravity research experiments.

“There would be astronaut training and education manufacturing and also the development of the types of systems that support those activities as we create that aerospace ecosystem out of Colorado Air and Spaceport,” said Ruppel.

Another goal spaceport is looking at hardware testing and evaluation. And, eventually, get re-entry licensed for other types of space vehicles.

“Also adding technology development following with hypersonic technologies, data fusion centers, and a workforce that will support those types of developments,” said Ruppel.

The spaceport is an FAA licensed commercial launch site facility, with sub-orbital spaceflight capabilities for horizontal launch using reusable launch vehicles such as the concept X, dual propulsion system “Pegasus” that will be designed specifically for the spaceport.

It has a control tower, business services, and two 8,000 feet runways with over 1,000 acres for development. Over 6,500 acres for rail service and a business park on the south side of the airport, and 700 acres on the east side for rail and a business park. They are surrounded by more than 10,000 acres for future industrial-zoned land with water access, wastewater, electricity, data, and gas.

Ruppel said, “I think it was one of the things that stand out is the amount of room for development on and around the facility.”

The spaceport is in the process of planning the infrastructure, development, and funding.

“The spaceport master plan, which is similar to an airport mas-

ter plan looks at the infrastructure development and the funding for infrastructure and forecasting of the types of business interests in the area and the future for us. Also, we look at the area around the Colorado Air and Spaceport the sub-area,” said Ruppel.

According to Ruppel, Adams County is evaluating the land users and the zoning to make sure the spaceport has compatible land uses in those areas that will protect the spaceport’s future.

“It’s the reason that we are here today. We are very happy to have a relationship with PD Aerospace and are excited to see their ongoing development and their efforts in Japan,” said Ruppel.

Currently, at spaceport Reaction Engines from the United Kingdom are doing high-temperature engine testing technologies at one of their facilities both for aviation and for aerospace.

Also, New Frontier Aerospace will be doing some compound testing at the spaceport. It is a type of technology for a hypersonic aircraft. It’s just testing, not flying a vehicle.

“We are excited to have them on board as well,” said Ruppel.

There will be a festival of lights this year in Brighton. But it won’t look the same as the previous 24 versions.

This year’s event is a drivethrough starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. The procession begins at Tower Road and Southern Street and ends at Bromley Lane.

The city of Brighton’s COVID-19 testing site will remain open until Saturday, Dec. 19. The location is Riverdale Regional Park, 9755 Riverdale Road. The hours of operation are the same -- 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Enter through the main entrance and follow the signs to enter the mobile queue for an antigen nasal swab. Test results will be available through texts or emails. Individuals who live or work in Brighton are eligible for free testing.

More COVID money available for residents

Commerce City announced it has almost $467,000 in money to help residents who’ve faced impacts from coronavirus.

The money comes from the city’s Community Assistance Program.

It’s available for child-care assistance ($200 per child under age 12 per week for up to eight weeks). The grant also made up to $600 available for material aid (such as food and personal care) for seniors, up to $2,500 for medical gap coverage for uncovered and unanticipated medical expenses and up to $1,800 for technology mini-grants to help seniors stay connected to COVID information, resources and telemedicine services.

Eligible households can apply for up to $5,000 in relief aid for unexpected expenses because of the pandemic. Funding is on a first-come, first-served basis until the money runs out or until Monday, Nov. 30, whichever comes first.

PVHS alum plans a returns to college ball

Devan Madron graduated from Prairie View High School in 2018 with his eyes set on playing college football.

He had to put those dreams on hold to help take care of his mother, Kathy, She died earlier this year.

“One of my last conversations with my mom was about me getting back onto the football field,” Madron said. “After her long battle came to an end, I knew what I had to do in memory of her. And that was to get back on the field.

“It’s what brought my mom happiness.”

In 2018, Madron wound up at Vermillion College, a National Junior

College Athletic Association Division III school in Ely, Minnesota. He played there one year and earned first-team, all-Minnesota College Athletic Conference honors.

“My coach from Vermillion College transferred to Bethany College (in Lindsborg, Kan., where Madron will continue his athletic and educational careers) and contacted me after my mom’s passing,” Madron said. “He said he would love to get me a scholarship if I was up for it.

There was no question about it. I was taking that offer.”

In 2016, Madron made 10 unassisted tackles for the ThunderHawks.

In 2017, he played in one recorded game, according to Maxpreps, and made one unassisted tackle.

Coronavirus caused big impacts

to a lot of high-school athletes this spring. That wasn’t the case for Madron.

“For me, the recruiting process was simple due to me having an amazing coach to help me through the process,” he said. “I haven’t visited the campus but am going to be moving out there with my two puppies and hope to find a house to rent.”

Madron said he wasn’t “scared one bit” about what’s upcoming.

“I’ve had to adapt and overcome change, so this is nothing new to me,’ he said. “I’m excited for the opportunity and cannot wait to get back to what I love.

“Everything I do on and off the field is for my mom now.”

Ramon “Mono” Hernandez was born in Grafton, North Dakota on May 16, 1984 to Betty and Ramon Hernandez.

He grew up in the small town of Fort Lupton, Colorado and was the oldest of 3 siblings.

Ramon was a United States Air-Force Veteran and most importantly, a proud father of 3 children who he loved more than anything in the world. Although he was only 36 years young when he passed, Ramon accomplished more in his short lifetime than most people his age. He was a beam of light who radiated positivity to anyone he crossed paths with and never failed to make people laugh. Despite the many obstacles that came his way, Ramon never gave up and always took care of his family. In his free time, Ramon enjoyed watching and playing sports.

He favored The Dallas Cowboys, who he represented year-round.

In his younger years, Ramon was a dedicated boxer. With the guidance and mentorship of his father, Ramon Hernandez Sr., he went on to compete in the Golden Gloves and eventually became a Junior Olympic State Champion.

Ramon proudly served his country in the United States Air-Force, working law enforcement with Security Forces.

He deployed to the Middle East 4 times in support of OPERATION ENDURING/IRAQI FREEDOM. He was awarded the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter for his Security Forces Squadron and received several APARICIO

exemplary Service Medals.

Ramon fulfilled his contract proudly and was Honorably Discharged in 2009. After completing his Military obligations, Ramon dedicated his time to furthering his education, advancing his career, and spending time with his family. Ramon’s passion for teaching was felt by all his family and friends which ultimately drove him to study Elementary Education. After receiving his Associates Degree, Ramon earned two separate Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. Ramon gracefully dedicated seven years of his life to teaching both elementary and middle school students and was in the process of finishing up his Master’s Degree.

Ramon was highly intelligent and had an outstanding work ethic that came to him naturally.

Ramon’s life will forever be cherished by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving Parents; Betty & Ramon Hernandez, his three children, Jaydon (14), Jocelyn (10), and Jonathan (4); his wife Arly Hernandez, and his two younger sisters; Joanna Hetrick and Connie Hernandez.

It is with great sadness and remorse that we announce the passing of Patrick (Pat) Gale Jones on 28 November 2020.

Pat was born on 3 February 1945. Pat is a child born from Buelah Mae Jones and Charles Ardell Jones. Pat was a twin of Patricia (Patti) Florence (Jones) Schiefelbein, and a sibling of Walt, Helen, and Tom. Pat was raised around the Ft. Lupton area and was a student athlete alumni from Ft. Lupton High School, class of 63’.

Once out of high school, Pat served in the Army doing a tour in Vietnam.

He also, worked and retired from International Harvester. Pat was a man known for being a community supporter, a constant fan of Brighton athletics, and a passionate lover of baseball. Pat could always be seen on the side cheering on Brighton’s Baseball team with his noticeable red Brighton baseball cap. Once you got to talking with Pat, most would say he was a man of humor, always enjoyed a good laugh, and had a genuine kindness towards all people. Pat’s demeanor made people feel as if he had never met a stranger, speaking to them as if they had known each other for years. Pat also was known for being the epitome of a picture-perfect father and grandpa who loved his children

and grandchildren. Pat’s warm smile, white colored hair, white long beard, with a lovable round stomach; was often mistaken for Santa Clause and was a big hit around other kids.

Pat is survived by two children Shawn Duane Jones and significant other Shawna Marie Carey, and daughter Katina Marie Garcia. Pat is also survived by 11 grandkids (listed in order by age), Brandon Michael Garcia, Tyler Duane Jones and significant other Karyssa Raelynn Mayfield, Abrelia Avreanna Archuleta (Garcia) married to Ty Joseph Richard Archuleta, Kaylee Marie Garcia, Joey Braden Simmons, Jackson Brandon Simmons, Samantha Renee Simmons, Isaac Brandon Garcia, Jameson Bradley Simmons, one great grandchild Ashton William Jones, and along with many nieces and nephews.

Ralph Moises Aparicio

May 23, 1924 ~ November 26, 2020

Ralph Moises Aparicio was born on May 23, 1924 in Newell, South Dakota to parents Juan and Angela Aparicio. He married Mary Otero, his wife of 66 years, who preceded him in death on March 21, 2008.

Ralph and Mary farmed in Yakima, Washington where they raised their family. Wanting a better life for their children, they moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Ralph was first employed as a mechanic for Klipstein Motors later moving on to work as a cement agitator truck driver for Cook-McCann Concrete, where he retired after 30 years.

During his retirement years, Ralph and Mary were always on the move.

They purchased property outside of Cheyenne, Wyoming to keep them active and busy. He enjoyed upgrading their home and spending time with family. Ralph hosted annual picnics during Frontier Days. He loved camping trips and dancing to his Tejano music.

In 2004, Ralph and Mary made the move to Brighton, Colorado to be closer to family. After Mary’s passing in 2008, Ralph continued his love of dancing and

Tejano music earning the nickname “The Dancing Cowboy”.

Ralph could hold a conversation with anyone who was willing. He was a loving and caring soul cherishing every day he had with his children and grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a hard worker, a jokester and a wise man.

Ralph is survived by his five children, Ralph Jr. (Carmen), Esther (John) Pacheco, Della (Jesus) Villarreal, Virginia Gurule and Yvonne (Michael) Weaver; 12 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded by his wife, Mary, of 66 years; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

He was the last living of the first generation of Aparicio’s.
