In Adams and Arapahoe counties, a school mask mandate will be extended, and a broader mandate for masks in public indoor spaces will continue, according to Tri-County Health Department.

With the surge in cases “it makes sense to continue with as many prevention practices as possible to protect the health of everyone in Adams and Arapahoe counties,” said a statement from Becky O’Guin, spokesperson for Tri-County Health. “We also need to help protect our frontline workers who have worked exhaustively for the last two years.”

Hospital capacity remains “very tight,” and surges in omicron cases are likely to further aggravate the situation, according to a Dec. 28 news release from the Colorado Health Institute.

Doctors nationwide say that while children have been the least impacted in contracting COVID-19, it does not mean they are immune, and with a third variant hitting the streets of Colorado cases will continue to go up.

Samuel Dominguez, a pediatric disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said statewide case numbers are holding steady with young patients. However, Dominguez said while national media outlets are reporting continued increases in young patients contracting the new omicron variant with hospital stays increasing, Colorado is still lagging behind.

Dominguez said CHC facilities along the Front Range had started seeing a decrease in young patients just before the Thanksgiving holiday. That decrease has continued as more cases of omicron are starting to be reported at all age levels.

Because Colorado cases are further behind the jump in COVID rates in states like Florida and New York, Dominguez said infectious disease doctors are relying on data from those states as they

“Really, in terms of what we are seeing here right now, it’s just not quite where the rest of the country is,” Dominguez said. “At the state level, we have no real good data for comparisons (between the delta and omicron variants) at this time.”

Even as Colorado is playing catch-up with the rest of the country, Dominguez said the newest variant it is here, and the biggest concern is how transmissible it is.

Like Colorado doctors, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) con-

tinues to work on a world scale to get a grasp on what kind of impact the new variant will have on the U.S. As cases spread, the CDC reported that omicron spreads more easily than the original COVID strain and more studies are needed to see how it compares to the Delta variant.

According to the CDC timeline, Omicron was first reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Nov. 24. By Nov. 26, WHO classified Omicron as a “variant of concern.” The U.S. followed suit with the same labeling by Nov. 30. By Dec. 1, the U.S. had its first confirmed case of the new variant that is now competing with the Delta variant, which has been the dominant strain since summer.

On the website, the CDC stressed that “anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms.”

The CDC said more data is needed to know if Omicron infections, including breakthrough infections for vaccinated citizens, cause more sever illness or death than infection with other COVID variants.

According to the CDC, the

current vaccines on the market, including Pizer and Moderna, are expected to protect people from “severe” illness, hospitalizations and deaths. However, the CDC warned that it expects an increase in breakthrough cases among people who are fully vaccinated.

U.S. health officials continue to encourage residents to not only get the first round of vaccinations, but also get the booster shot for added protection.

In children, Dominguez said, vaccinations are an important preventive step for ages 5 and older to be protected as much as possible.

As omicron becomes the most prevalent variant spreading COVID, Dominguez said winter break from schools is both good and bad to help prevent the spread among children and youths.

“The time off means decreases in spreading (COVID) in the schools,” he said. “But the bad side is there are a lot more holiday gatherings this time of year where it can also spread. Traveling also tends to increase this time of year.”

Englewood police seek hit-and-run suspect Pedestrian struck by vehicle along U.S. Highway 285

Englewood police responded to the area of East Jefferson Avenue at South Pennsylvania Street after a report of a vehicle incident involving a pedestrian on Dec. 25, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, officers found a victim lying on the roadway around 8:45 p.m., the release said. The area is along U.S. Highway 285 a handful of blocks east of Broadway.

Paramedics took the victim to a local hospital with serious injuries, the release said. The pedestrian was walking across the street when they were struck by a silver SUV,

has ties in Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and Montana, according to the release. Investigators believe he may have committed multiple sexassault crimes in those states and possibly others, due to his access to families through his work, according to the release.

As families gathered and traveled throughout the holiday season, Johns Hopkins University reported the highest total cases of COVID since pandemic tracking officially began on Jan. 21, 2020.

Breaking the record on Dec. 29, data showed the U.S. had 377,014 confirmed cases.

In Colorado, the state had just over 4,700 confirmed cases on Dec. 29, up about 67% from 2,824 confirmed cases the week before.

As cases increase, the need for testing centers has also increased. According to the Douglas County website, testing at Sky Ridge Medial Center resumes this month. In Arapahoe County, testing sites can be seen with increasing lines at the UCHealth Campus along Arapahoe Road and the Arapahoe Crossing Shopping Center.

Still, Dominguez said, the “silver lining” for children and young adults is that it is the demographic least impacted in contracting COVID. “Overall, children have done

Students building ‘tiny homes’ for homeless Cherry Creek program helps effort to get unhoused back on feet

For the second time, students at Cherry Creek’s career and technical education campus are building what are known as “tiny homes” as part of an effort to help people out of unsheltered homelessness in Denver.

“This project is not only teaching our students valuable life skills and preparing them for post-secondary careers — it’s also showing them how to use their skills for the benefit of the community,” Mike Degitis, project coordinator and a math teacher at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, said in a news release.

“Compared to other practice builds in class, students take pride in this project because it will actually become someone’s home.”

The tiny homes are small residences complete with plumbing and electricity capability that will house people at a tiny-home village in Denver once they’re completed in April, according to a Cherry Creek School District news release.

“Tiny home villages provide a safe, dignified and alternative sheltering model for people coming from unsheltered homelessness in Denver,” Colorado Village Collaborative, the organization partnering

with the school district on the project, said in a news release. “These villages bridge the gap between the streets and stable housing.”

In 2017, the City of Denver’s first legal community of tiny homes opened along 38th Street, giving a small number of people a lift in their struggle to exit homelessness.

The Colorado Village Collaborative launched the community, called Beloved Community Village, which later moved to the city’s Globeville neighborhood.

The Colorado Village Collaborative later opened a tiny-home village for women and transgender women climbing out of homelessness.

To the organization’s knowledge, the women’s village was to be the second-ever legal tiny home village for people experiencing homelessness in the Denver metro area, according to Cole Chandler, executive director of the Colorado Village Collaborative. Named the Women’s Village at Clara Brown Commons, it sits near 37th Avenue and York Street, not far from the Five Points neighborhood.

The first Cherry Creek students’ project to build tiny homes occurred during the 2019-20 school year: The students at Innovation Campus built six units for the women’s village.

Now, students are building five units.

The units will be finished at the end of the students’ spring semester and will be delivered to the Beloved Community Village’s new location in late April or early May, said Jen-

The Beloved village will soon sit at 4201 N. Monroe St. when the village relocates from its current location at 4400 N. Pearl St. by April 30, according to the organization.

Since 2017, the organization’s tinyhome program has grown considerably from its 11-unit origin, according to the collaborative. In 2021, CVC’s two tiny-home villages served more than 45 people, 11 of whom have graduated from the villages into permanent housing this year, the organization says.

At the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, high school students in the Cherry Creek School District come to learn skills in several trades — from construction management to cybersecurity.

This year’s build includes firstyear and second-year students in CCIC’s Infrastructure Engineering pathway, according to the Colorado Village Collaborative.

The organization has also worked with Denver to provide another kind of shelter. In July 2020, the Denver Mayor’s Office announced a partnership with the Colorado Village Collaborative to open “Safe

Outdoor Spaces,” according to the organization’s website. The Safe Outdoor Spaces are “secure, staffed, resource- and service-rich environments” for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, the website says.

The first two Safe Outdoor Spaces had “successfully operated” in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood starting in December 2020, the website says.

An entity called EarthLinks opened the first Safe Outdoor Space site at First Baptist Church, and Colorado Village Collaborative opened the second site at Denver Community Church. Those were the first two locations in Denver, according to Forker.

Some of Colorado Village Collaborative’s funding comes from the City of Denver, Forker said. The organization also receives funding from “generous individuals, foundations and business donors,” Forker added.

The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus is located at 8000 S. Chambers Road near East Broncos Parkway. It sits in the Dove Valley area of unincorporated Arapahoe County, just outside central Centennial.

Here are steps to take to get on a ballot

The 2022 election is 10 months away, and a wave of candidates are filing paperwork to run in Colorado’s newly reconfigured congressional and legislative districts.

But jumping into a race doesn’t guarantee someone a spot on the ballot for the June 28 primary, let alone the Nov. 8 general election.

Candidates have to spend big money to qualify for the contest, or they can try to pick up enough support from members of their political party through what’s called the caucus and assembly process.

The mad dash to make the ballot starts this month, with the primary ballot set by April 29.

Here’s how the process works for Democratic and Republican candidates: Candidates must meet certain qualifications The federal and state governments set qualifications for candidates to run for elected office.

First off, candidates must be affiliated with a political party on Jan. 1, 2022, to seek the Democratic or Republican nomination.

To run for U.S. Senate, candidates must also be at least 30 years old, be a U.S. citizen for at least nine years,

and be a resident of the state at the time of the election.

To run for the U.S. House, candidates must be at least 25 years old, be a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and live in the state they represent, though not necessarily in the congressional district where they’re running.

Anyone running for office in Colorado must be a U.S. citizen. But that’s not the only requirement.

To run for governor or lieutenant governor, candidates must: be at

least 30 years old and be a Colorado resident for at least two years.

To run for treasurer, secretary of state or attorney general, candidates must be at least 25 years old and be a Colorado resident for at least two years.

To run for state Senate or House, candidates must be at least 25 years old and live in Colorado and the district they are seeking to represent for at least one year.

To run for University of Colorado regent, state Board of Education or district attorney, candidates must be at least 18 years old, be a Colorado resident and live in the district they’re running in, unless they’re running for a statewide at-large seat The caucus and assembly process The caucus and assembly process is considered the traditional, grassroots method of getting on the ballot. Candidates must cultivate support among party members who show up to precinct caucuses, where a handful of people — sometimes only two or three — gather to throw their support behind someone and elect delegates. for everything from county offices to the U.S. Senate.

Only voters registered as Republicans or Democrats by Feb. 7 may attend precinct caucuses, which must be held between March 1 and 5. Typically, the caucuses and subsequent assemblies draw mostly party activists. That’s because it takes dedication — and a good deal of time — to participate.

To make the ballot through the caucus and assembly, candidates must get at least 30% of the delegate vote at each step. This limits the number of candidates who may emerge from an assembly to three, though it’s typically fewer.

For example, in the 2018 gubernatorial caucus and assembly process, Democrats nominated Cary Kennedy and then U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, while Republicans nominated then state Treasurer Walker Stapleton and former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez.

But those four people were far from the only candidates seeking to be on the primary ballot that year.

is a prime example, where then El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn surprised many political observers by wooing party activists at the last minute and making the ballot. In the process, he denied others a chance at winning the GOP nomination.

The petition process Candidates may also petition to get on the ballot by gathering signatures from voters registered to their party. Those signatures are then reviewed and confirmed by the Secretary of State’s Office.

Jan. 18 is the first day that Democratic or Republican candidates may begin gathering those signatures. Signatures must be submitted

by March 15.

The signature-gathering rules are

somewhat complicated, and going the petition route can be expensive — as in tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars expensive — especially for statewide candidates who typically hire private firms to do the work.

Signature-gathering requirements U.S. Senate candidates and those running for governor must collect 1,500 valid signatures from voters in each of Colorado’s eight congressional districts. That’s at least 12,000 signatures, though candidates typically gather far more signatures than they need just in case some signatures are rejected during the review process. U.S. House, state Board of Education and CU regent candidates must collect whichever is lesser: 1,500 signatures or 10% of the votes cast in the last primary election (or general election if there was no primary) held in the district Secretary of state, treasurer and attorney general candidates must collect 1,000 signatures from

each of the state’s eight congressional districts. That’s at least 8,000 signatures. State House and Senate candidates must collect whichever is lesser: 1,000 signatures or 30% of the votes cast in the last primary election (or general election if there was no primary) held in the district Candidates running for at-large University of Colorado regent seats must collect 500 signatures from each of the state’s eight congressional districts for a total of 4,000 signatures There’s often a race to submit signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office because once a voter has been counted on one candidate’s petition, they can’t be counted for another one running for the same office.

Problems can arise In 2018, Stapleton paid a firm about $235,000 to gather signatures so he could get on the ballot. But he withdrew the signatures he submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office

at the last minute when he learned that the company he hired didn’t follow state laws.

Stapleton later won a lawsuit against Kennedy Enterprises, the signature-gathering firm, which was ordered to return the money.

Campaign finance records don’t indicate how much 2018 Republican gubernatorial nominees Victor Mitchell and Doug Robinson or Democrats Donna Lynne and Mike Johnston paid to make the ballot.

But Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser spent nearly $175,000 to make the ballot in 2018, and Republican candidate for treasurer Polly Lawrence spent $128,000.

Douglas County poised for more growth 25% expansion in 10 years outpaces metro area

After a decade of growth that far outstrips the Denver metro area as a whole, Douglas County shows few signs of slowing down, driven by high levels of demand and new development in expanding towns like Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Parker.

There’s no doubt the entire metro area has grown at an unprecedented rate in the last decade. But Douglas County, home to smaller towns, scattered development and plentiful open space for years, was especially ripe for growth in 2010.

From 2010 to 2020, Douglas County’s population grew by 25% to just over 360,000 people, according to the most recent data available from the Colorado State Demography Office, compared with just under 16% growth for the entire metro area. And while the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020 slowed migration, and growth, across the board, Douglas County still grew more than twice as fast as metro Denver over the course of the year.

Douglas County’s population grew 2.5% from 2019 to 2020, while the metro area expanded by less than 1%, according to the demography office’s data.

Housing in Lone Tree continues to increase along with the population.

Since Douglas County’s population was much smaller to begin with, it makes sense that its rate

of growth would be higher. But there’s no doubt that the county has seen an outsized share of development in recent years, and in 2021 it took significant steps toward continuing the trend heading into the new year.

In Lone Tree, for example, a long-anticipated expansion of RidgeGate Parkway paved the way — literally — to easier access and smoother traffic flows through the area, a crucial piece of the plan to implement phase two of the RidgeGate master-planned development.

Additionally in 2021, Shea Homes made its first of five land purchases that will allow it to build homes on 185 acres at RidgeGate.

moves that are poised to pay dividends as the retail-heavy town persists on its path to greater diversity of industry, more primary employment and good jobs closer to home for its growing number of residents.

With projects like The Meadows residential development underway and large mixed-use developments like Dawson Trails moving through the planning stages, Castle Rock is ready to keep its growth spurt going, although keeping the expansion going at a measured, reasonable pace is the goal for the economic development team there.

Beekeeping chef has residents buzzing ‘It’s been an adventure, I’ll tell you’

When Greg Strickland realized four years ago that the lackluster gardens at the Vi at Highlands Ranch senior-living community might need more pollinators, he jumped into beekeeping with both feet.

The executive chef, who’s been with Vi since it opened in 2008, started with one and now maintains six rooftop hives at the upscale community off of South University Boulevard.

“It’s been an adventure, I’ll tell you,” said Strickland, who incorporates the honey into Vi’s menu items. The sweet liquid is also put into jars and sold at Vi’s annual farmers market.

Strickland, who’s been cooking for over 30 years, said he’s always striving to improve Vi’s culinary program. When he can, he offers specials that utilize the community’s produce such as pesto from the kitchen garden’s abundance of basil or salads that use their homegrown cherry tomatoes. But his efforts go beyond enticing the palate.

“Chefs should all strive to be more connected to their food and more connected to their residents and their guests,”

Strickland said.

His bees fit into Vi’s “living well” approach to life, which focuses on the minds, bodies and spirits of residents, said Angela Owens, lifestyle director at Vi. In addition to helping people eat healthily, residents have enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the bees.

Strickland gives lectures about the winged insects’ role and their struggles in our modern environment. Sensitive to certain chemicals and subject to colony collapse syndrome, they are canaries in the coal mine, he says, and he is happy to talk about them with residents.

“There’s always a buzz around the bees,” Owens said. “Residents are really excited about the bees, and it adds value to our community.”

In addition to Strickland’s culinary garden, some residents care for their own garden plots at Vi. Others peruse the facility’s communal memory garden. All the gardens — and the residents who enjoy them — have benefited from the bees, Owens said.

Strickland not only creates breakfast, lunch and dinner options for Vi’s 300 residents, he also provides fun food events outside of mealtime. The activities offered by the chef are some of Vi’s best attended programs, Owens said. Over 75 residents, for example, recently attended a wine and food pairing event he

hosted.

The chef’s newest plan involves opening a nanobrewery at Vi next year that uses the community’s honey and possibly their own hops. Over a dozen residents, many of them former homebrewers, have expressed an interest in working on the project with him.

“Our residents bring a lot to the table,” Strickland said.

“They were very creative people before they came here and, of course, that didn’t end there.

They’re very creative, and they like to get involved with what we’re doing.”

When it comes to bees, involvement can go beyond Vi as far as Strickland’s concerned. He’d love to see everybody who has the opportunity to give beekeeping a try.

While bees are more work than a cat, they’re less work than a dog, he said, and they don’t take a lot of space. During the peak season, Strickland spends about three hours a week on the six hives at Vi. He also keeps a hive in his own backyard in Highlands Ranch.

“These little creatures are very much responsible for a lot of the lifestyle that we have, the availability of food that we have,” Strickland said. “...

They’re facing a lot more challenges than they were even 10 to 20 years ago. It’s definitely something to pay attention to.”

‘Disney On Ice’ performer, Centennial native, former South Suburban ice skater I am 27, and I am currently a resident of Jefferson City, Missouri.

I lived in the Denver area starting at age 2, and Centennial from age 16 to 25.

My mom had always loved ice skating as a girl, and so she would take me and my siblings skating when we were young as a fun family activity that we could all do together. Eventually, she signed us up for lessons, and at the age of 8, I started really learning to ice skate.

I learned the basics of skating and then went into playing hockey, which I really enjoyed, and still enjoy very much today.

I first began figure skating at the age of 14 after pursuing hockey for several years. I switched from hockey because I was a competitive sibling and thought I could be better than my sisters.

‘Out of my shell’ The thing that started my love of performing actually had nothing to do with skating — it was through speech and debate. I competed in debate for three years in high school, but my senior year, one of the other students convinced me to do an interpretive speech with her. It was an experience that really forced me to come out of my shell, and through it, I discovered that acting and bringing characters to life was a challenge that was thoroughly enjoyable.

National contender After high school, I attended Arapahoe Community College for two years to be able to continue training, and throughout this time I competed in the pairs discipline of the United States Figure Skating competitive pipeline. Three times I competed in one of the three sectional championships that are held across the U.S., and twice I was fortunate enough to advance from them to the national championships at my level.

South Suburban memories I skated in many amateur shows during this time as well ... The best show to skate in though was “Showtime On Ice,” a production of the Denver Colorado Figure Skating Club, held at the (former) South

Suburban Ice Arena.

Every spring, they put on (a large) amateur ice show … with a cast of kids and adults sometimes 200 strong, featuring everyone from tots barely able to skate, to Olympians in guest performances. It is a show that every kid at that rink spends all year looking forward to, and it brings so much joy to both the skaters and the parents who get to watch them fall in love with performing under the spotlights.

Every year, I was able to learn something new about performing from the amazing directors and coaching staff they had, and it bred and solidified my desire to perform professionally one day.

Left a mark One of the greatest influences on my performances is Sally Smith, the Denver Colorado Figure Skating Club’s beloved performance coach.

She is one of those people that is always pushing you to be better, no matter how good you already are, and does so in a way that made skating more fun for me. Through her lessons, I was prepared with the skills necessary to be a successful professional performer.

Coming to Disney “Disney On Ice” is a well-known destination in the figure skating world for people who want to continue their careers beyond their time in the competitive scene, and any skater can send in a video showcasing their skills to the talent director.

I was fortunate enough to meet the talent director in person at a competition and then attended an in-person audition, after which I was offered a position in the company.

This (current) show, “Dream Big,” is all about dreaming and setting those big goals for yourself. One of my favorite segments of the show is “The Princess and the Frog” because Tiana takes that message of dreaming big and isn’t afraid to work to make her dreams come true!

Behind the scenes I also sharpen all the performers’ skates on the show. I spent several years working at a pro shop in the old South Suburban Ice Arena, honed my sharpening skills there and now I get to travel the world while I sharpen skates for many incredible skaters.

We can’t stop until we start

Y

ou don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.” — Joe Saba Here we go, the first week of the year begins WINNING and we are back at it, whatever “it” WORDS may be for each of us. Whether we claim 2021 as a huge success, a miserable failure, or anywhere in between, the good news is that we get to either build upon Michael Norton the successes, grow from the failures, or jump-start our way out of our comfort zone.

Heading into the new year, we get to choose what it is we want to start doing. For many of us, we thought about what it is that we want to stop doing instead of what we want to start doing. When we think of what we are trying to stop, it means we see that as something that is negative, maybe it’s a bad habit that we know

we need to break. Having this awareness is so powerful when it comes to making positive changes in our life.

The best way to stop or break a bad habit is to start a new, good, healthy and productive habit. What I have noticed in life is that people who get stuck, knowing they want to stop doing something that could be destructive or disruptive to their life, but don’t stop, is because they didn’t come up with a better alternative.

We may argue that this should be common sense, but keep in mind that common sense is not always common practice. Many of us miss our own “aha” moments because we are so close to a problem or situation that we can’t visualize our way out of it. We need someone else to come alongside of us and point out what might be obvious.

As I thought about the column that I would write to begin the year, I knew that I wanted to begin the year with a one-word theme. I outlined several drafts of what the column could be about and had plenty of positive, motivating and encourag-

ing words to choose from. Before I knew it, I was stuck. Then it hit me, “Start” would be the word and all I had to do was “Start” writing and the story would almost write itself.

“People who never take step one, can never possibly take step two.” Zig Ziglar Why don’t we take the first step?

It comes down to one of two things: Fear of failure and no time. Fear of failure can be crippling if not paralyzing, but it is also the common language of negative or destructive self-talk. A kind of negative self-talk that when we eliminate it propels us forward toward the accomplishment of our goals and dreams. If we can start filling our head and heart with good, strong, and positive encouraging words, we will stop feeding our minds with negativity.

No time? What we are really telling ourselves is that everything and everyone else is more important than our own health and peace of mind.

No time is the easiest cop-out of all.

Sorry, but it’s true. What we need to do before we stop doing anything is

start prioritizing what we are doing.

What will have the greatest positive impact on our lives so we in turn can have an even greater impact on those around us? Change the talk-track in our head with what to start doing, and what we need to stop doing will become obvious.

Are you ready to start the year by deciding to get past the fear, the excuses of no time, stopping all that is dragging you down or holding you back, so that you can enjoy all that 2022 has in store for you? “Wearing masks indoors slows the spread of respiratory viruses,” Dawn Comstock, executive director of Jefferson County Public Health, said in the news release.

“Last month’s COVID-19 surge was reduced because people in our communities wore masks and got vaccinated, including booster doses.

Continuing these strategies will save lives as we experience the rapid growth of the omicron variant as well as increasing influenza cases.

“We cannot become complacent,” Comstock added.

Here’s a look at the mask requirements in several metro counties.

Tri-County Health Tri-County’s broader mask mandate applies in public indoor places, such as event spaces, businesses, restaurants, gyms, government buildings and facilities, offices, and other spaces that are not considered an individual’s residence.

The mask mandate applies to all people age 2 and older in all public indoor spaces in Adams and Arapahoe counties. It took effect in late November.

Tri-County also provides certain public health services in Douglas County but no longer has authority over countywide public health orders, such as mask mandates, in that county. The newly formed Douglas County Health Department has not issued a mask mandate.

The order for Adams and Arapahoe was to remain in effect through Jan. 2 — and further after that until staffed intensive-care unit bed capacity reaches 10% or greater for 14 consecutive days. The 10% ICU capacity mark was to be considered at a regional level.

The order allows what it calls “fully vaccinated facilities” to be excepted from the mask requirement.

Those are businesses and events that choose to implement a policy that verifies that 95% of all individuals within their public indoor space are fully vaccinated.

Tri-County announced it would extend its current school mask mandate, an order requiring masks for all people age 2 and older in schools and child care settings. The order took effect on Sept. 1 and was initially set to remain in effect until Dec. 31 unless extended.

Now, the school mask policy extends for at least 30 days — until Jan. 31 unless it’s further extended, O’Guin said.

“Please continue to wear a mask in indoor public places, wash your hands, get tested if you have symptoms or have a known exposure to someone who has COVID-19 and avoid large gatherings,” O’Guin’s statement said.

Denver Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, joined by metro-area public health leaders, on Nov. 23 announced a new face covering order for Denver as part of a “coordinated approach to prevent the region’s hospital system from collapsing,” according to the

Additionally, employees working in high-risk settings and employees for the City and County of Denver are required to be fully vaccinated, the website says.

Recent orders came after advisory Before several of the counties’ recent orders, metro Denver health officials urged residents to wear masks in public indoor spaces in a Nov. 5 announcement that was called a statewide “public health advisory.”

The advisory was issued by the Metro Denver Partnership for Health, which includes the public health agencies of Boulder, Broomfield, Jefferson and Denver counties as well as Tri-County Health.

MDPH is supported and staffed by the Colorado Health Institute, according to the Dec. 28 news release.

“As the more transmissible COVID-19 omicron variant takes hold in the metro region and across Colorado, the Metro Denver Partnership for Health (MDPH) is continuing its regional approach to stop the spread of COVID-19 by retaining or extending local public health orders requiring face coverings in indoor public settings,” the news release said.

Often, they teach customers about more than food

ometimes when customers enter Cafe Jordano, a longstanding Italian restaurant in Lakewood, they inquire about the lack of romantic music and quiet ambiance.

Owner Elisa Heitman, who was born and raised in Naples, Italy, takes a moment to explain: that is simply the American impression of her homeland.

“In Italy, the restaurants do not have dim lights and they have lots of people that talk,” Heitman said, “And they’re definitely not quiet.”

That’s just one of the parts of her country that Heitman seeks to share with customers through her restaurant, which has been in the community since 1991.

Heitman and dozens of other restaurateurs across the Denver Metro Area bring the food and culture of their homelands to local communities. Often, they’re correcting stereotypes and connecting Coloradans to novel ideas about far away places.

For Farah-Jane Jean Pierre, owner of Fritay Haitian Cuisine food truck, she’s teaching many that not all Haitian food is spicy and that her home country is more than what is seen on the news. For Grant and Yoona Conrad, owners of Hangry Ohana, they’re spreading Aloha and introducing locals to the sometimes-unexpected flavors of Hawaiian barbecue.

More to Haiti

When Jean Pierre moved to Denver three years ago, the only Haitian restaurant she knew of was closing down, she said. Previously, she had been in New York, where the food of her home country was abundant and easy to find.

With degrees in culinary arts and hospitality and a group of friends encouraging her to start her own restaurant, Jean Pierre soon decided to take a course in opening a food truck. Now, the recentlyopened Fritay Haitian Cuisine food truck

sits at 8615 East Colfax Avenue in Denver.

During the time she was preparing to open her food truck, Jean Pierre worked with her mother and aunt, both of whom still live in Haiti, to develop her recipes, she said.

“And then I put my own touch on them,” she said.

The truck serves common Haitian street food like plantains, rice and black beans, poul fri (fried chicken) and griyo (fried pork). Much of the food is prepared in a traditional haitian marinade called epis, which is a blend of herbs, garlic, peppers, vinegar and oil.

With many customers having never tried Haitian food, Jean Pierre often provides samples and explains a bit about her cooking process.

“There’s a misconception that Caribbean people eat a lot of spicy food,” Jean Pierre said. “But that doesn’t mean all our food is spicy.”

Jean Pierre, who moved to the United States a month after the deadly 2010 earthquake in Haiti, hopes to address other misconceptions about her country as well.

“With everything happening in Haiti right now, there’s bad news all the time,” she said, “But to me, there’s more to Haiti, more than the news.”

She said she hopes those curious about the country will try her food to learn a bit about it.

“You get a taste of Haiti,” she said. “Even though you’ve never been to Haiti.”

Spread the Aloha Grant and Yoona Conrad met in college on the Hawaiian island of Oahu where they both participated in a local ROTC program.

Grant started working in the restaurant industry while there and fell in love with the island’s food, he said.

The couple eventually moved to Colorado, where Grant was raised. Grant was working as a district manager for Wendy’s at the time but in 2016, he decided to open Hangry Ohana, a Hawaiian barbeque food truck. Two years later, they opened their first storefront location in Parker and later opened restaurants in Fountain and Monument.

to enjoy the food she grew up with, which isn’t very common in the Denver Metro Area.

“I get homesick like most people,” she said. “Grant’s cooking skills and business skills help me not miss home as much.”

The couple used a mix of taste memory, Yoona’s family recipes, and their own flavors to develop the dishes now served in the fast-casual restaurant. Some of the main items include chicken katsu, kalua pork, macaroni salad and bacon fried rice.

It’s not just the food from Hawaii that the couple is providing, it’s also the culture.

One thing Yoona likes to do is “spread the Aloha” with their customers, she said.

“Aloha is like a term for love and caring and saying hi,” she said. “It’s a good, warm comfort type of word and we want to instill that in our restaurant culture so our customers feel at home and get a little bit of the island experience.”

Cafe Jordano When Heitman moved to Colorado in 1979, she quickly fell in with the restaurant industry. She met her then-husband and about a decade later, the couple opened Cafe Jordano – named for their son.

“Everybody said ‘you’re crazy, you’re never going to make it,” she said in an interview with Colorado Community Media.

Now, it’s 31 years later and Heitman says it was reasonable prices and word of mouth exchanges that maintained and grew the restaurant.

Many of the restaurant’s dishes are a blend of traditional recipes combined with their own unique twist, Heitman said.

While visitors sometimes only think of spaghetti or lasagna when they first glance at the menu, Heitman’s offerings include many other dishes like Pollo Elegante, a chicken marsala dish with mushrooms and a splash of cognac, and Cod Alla Pomodoro Fresco, made up of cod, olive oil, tomatoes garlic and basil over linguini.

Heitman’s personal favorite is the linguini with fresh clams.

“It’s what I grew up on,” Heitman said.

The restaurant makes all of its sauces and meatballs in house and buys some ingredients, including their bread, straight from Italy.

Arts organizations look to a new year Outlets for creativity gain ground as restrictions continue

As a person who learned to love the arts — visual and performing — as a young child, I have been so saddened by the limitations COVID has placed on our world, near and far. And I’m sure my sadness can’t compare to that of a performer, whose energy comes from sharing his/her talents with an audience, or a skilled visual artist, whose fingertips tingle as a new painting takes shape, meant to speak to another sort of audience out there ... Creativity needs to be shared ... We see new partnerships developing throughout the area, which is a welcome and healthy sign.

As notices of performances and exhibits arrive in my inbox now, I am excited to sally forth to live performances again, although apprehensive about health issues, of course. It will require a wardrobe of masks and a proof of vaccination in my wallet to feed my soul!

In many venues, seating will be spaced out, and perhaps therefore pricier. Masks are required in all the performance spaces I’m hearing about, starting with our local Town Hall Arts Center in Downtown Littleton, which will open “Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Robert Wells, Jan. 28 to March 6. Meek Seymour, a budding botanist who works in a struggling flower shop, discovers a new plant.

Tattered Cover reflects on pop-up experience in Lone Tree Staff also discuss best reads of 2021, most anticipated in 2022

Tattered Cover opened its first pop-up site to be located at Lone Tree’s Park Meadows mall in October and will wind down the venture in the coming days.

The space, called “Tattered Cover + Kids,” boasted more than 1,200 children’s titles. The store had 1,800 total titles, stocking best-selling adult novels as well. The seasonal store also gathered children’s gifts and special events.

The locally owned bookstore marked 50 years running in 2021 and has satellite locations in Denver International Airport, five Denver metro area stores, and will soon open a Westminster location in addition to its pop-ups.

Park Meadows Senior General Manager Pamela Kelly said by email that Tattered Cover was a great addition to the shopping facility.

“They have an outstanding longterm reputation and Park Meadows is very excited to be a continuation of that legacy and retail experience,” she said.

Kwame Spearman, Tattered Cover’s CEO, said in a statement that the pop-up will be open at Park

“We are thrilled with the response and support from the Lone Tree community,” Spearman said.

Her most-loved books of 2021 include “The Night Walk,” written and illustrated by Marie Dorleans, and “Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess,” written and illustrated by Tom Gauld.

Among children’s books in 2022, she is most looking forward to checking out “Being a Dog — A Tail of Mindfulness,” written by Maria Gianferrari and illustrated by Pete Oswald. The book teaches about all five senses by following “a dog just being a dog,” she said, and will be published on April 5.

Among adult books, Brasch plans to read “Sea of Tranquility” by Emily St. John Mandel, which also will come out April 5.

“Earlier novels of Emily St. John Mandel include ‘Station Eleven’ and ‘The Glass Hotel,’” Brasch said. “I so enjoyed both of these titles, so look forward to this new fantastical and hopefully fantastic book.”

Mineral Avenue, investments in intersection safety for cyclists and pedestrians and upgraded roadway crossings along the High Line Canal Trail.

Below is a list of all developments and updates being considered: ​​M ineral Avenue and Jackass Hill Road/Long Avenue Intersection — Reconstruction of the intersection to better facilitate travel on bike or foot while also accommodating for vehicles.

Jackass Hill Road — More protection and prioritization for cyclists and pedestrians while controlling travel speeds.

Jackass Hill Road and Jamison Way/Curtice Court Intersection — Redirection of cyclist and pedestrian crossings to improved points to the north and south.

High Line Canal Trail Extension Crossing of Jackass Hill Road — Improvements to the crossing to increase safety for cyclists and pedestrians

interacting with vehicles.

Mineral Avenue Roadway — Separate bike lanes from vehicular traffic and improved bus stops with new designated waiting areas and connections to adjacent sidewalks and trails.

Mineral Avenue Trail — An improved trail to better provide connection to the Mineral Light Rail Station.

High Line Canal Trail Crossing of Mineral Avenue — A newly designed crossing to improve safety.

The project will be funded through a “Safer Main Streets” grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

While adoption of concepts and project design will begin in 2022, the city does not anticipate construction until 2023.

Residents can vist the website at tinyurl.com/littletongov to provide input on current transportation concerns as well as any desired improvements to be included in the upcoming project. Comments will be accepted through Jan. 7, although residents will have more opportunities for public comment as the project is undertaken by the city’s staff and council in 2022.

Englewood Arts plans several concerts Cellist Silver Ainomaie will be back for January performance

Englewood Arts Presents featured its former cellist, Silver Ainomae, now principal cellist with the Minnesota Orchestra, in the “Beethoven Septet” on Dec. 18, a wonderful concert by a highly skilled septet, in a fairly full Hampden Hall.

Englewood Arts has an active community board, chaired by Jim Copenhaver, which presents a range of educational programs for its community, especially strong children’s educational offerings: Strings Attached, Englewood Arts Children’s Chorus, Mr. David’s Music Class, Sheridan Strings and the Clayton Elementary Theatre Troupe.

It also offers “Symphony Spotlight,” an assembly program in various metro area schools at a reasonable cost, performed by 13 musicians from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Programs includes

brief instrument demonstrations, and a variety of musical genres. This ensemble appears across the metropolitan area.

We hope music lovers from our surrounding south area are aware of this fine organization and its chamber music programs and I thought I’d list the next concerts coming up at Hampden Hall, 1000 W. Hampden, in the Englewood Civic Center. (Tickets cost $30/$25/$10 — available online, englewoodarts.org, or at the door a half-hour prior to the concert.)

The remainder of the season includes: Jan. 22, 2022: “Happy Birthday Silver!” which will include: Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C Minor with Anne Ainomae, viola; tbd, violin; Silve Ainomae, cello and Joshua Sawicki, piano.

Feb. 19, 2022: Viola Sonata No. 2, with Basil Vendrys, Colorado Symphony’s principal viola and Bill David, piano.

March 19, 2022: Brahms Clarinet Sonata in E flat, with Jason Shafer, CSO principal clarinet, Yi Zhao, CSO assistant concertmaster; Margaret McDonald, piano. Also: Bruch and Katchiturian works.

April 16, 2022: Silver Ensemble,

Dohany: Serenade for String Trio.

May 7, 2022: Schumann Piano Quintet with Yi Zhao and Dimitri Pogorelov, violins; Sofia Basile Englewood Arts, which hopes to inspire a lifelong interest in music among students, offers the Strings Attached program, which teaches students to play a violin, cello, piano or guitar, with reasonably-priced lessons for beginning and continuing students. The ongoing program is based on the premise that learning to play a musical instrument exposes students to a variety of musical genres — and often has a beneficial effect on academic work, offering a self-esteem that extends beyond musical skills.

We are aware that each community we serve supports instrumental and choral ensembles which enrich the lives of both participants and families — and audiences — and we’d be happy to hear more about these activities, because we’re so convinced of their value for our children as they develop into creative adults ...

Isolation and loneliness carry health risks for older Americans

W

e’re heading into the holiday season, which is often embraced as a time to get together with friends and family to celebrate traditional holidays.

However, what can be a joyous time for some, may be difficult for older adults who are more vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Particularly during the holiday season. In fact, a recent report showed that nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are socially isolated.

Loneliness and social isolation are serious health risks, particularly to at-risk individuals, such as older adults. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking or obesity. In addition, poor social relationships (characterized by social isolation or loneliness) were associated

with a 29 percent increased risk of heart disease and a 32 percent increased risk of stroke. Perhaps most concerning is the fact that a person’s risk of premature death from all causes is significantly increased by social Todd Wisser isolation, a risk that may rival those of smoking, obesity and physical inactivity.

As a general demographic, seniors can be more at risk for social isolation and loneliness.

There are many tell-tale signs that you or someone you know is at risk for experiencing loneliness or social isolation. Risk factors can include but are not limited to disability or lack of mobility, worsening vision or hearing problems, separation from friends or family, illness or

death of a loved one and lack of access to transportation.

Luckily, there are steps we can take to help combat the loneliness epidemic. All humans need social connection and interaction as part of their survival. But often as adults age, they begin to spend more time alone making them more vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Engaging in activities that are meaningful can boost mood and give people a sense of purpose. In addition to living longer, research demonstrates that productive people seem to improve cognitive function and are better able to maintain their well-being.

Some tips for staying connected include: • Learn something new – sign up for a class in your community •Reignite your passions with something you love — begin an old hobby • Explore volunteer opportunities with your local community

that allow you to help others • Make sure you stay connected with your friends and family inperson or through phone calls, email, video chats or social media • Stay physically active and consider group exercise, such a walking club or working out with a friend • Find a faith-based or spiritual organization where you can engage with others in a meaningful way • If you are able, adopt a pet.

Animals can be a source of comfort and may also lower blood pressure and reduce stress.

By employing some of these tips, we can do our part to help combat loneliness and support the social and emotional needs of the older adults we care about this holiday season.

“Healthy is the key word,” said Frank Gray, CEO of the Castle Rock Economic Development Council. “You want to see nice, healthy growth. Growth is going to happen in Castle Rock either way.

The entitlements are there. So, you want to create an environment where you can get to the highest and best use, and create jobs for Castle Rock residents and places where people want to live and work.”

Retail and dining, two industries that have historically been Castle Rock’s bread and butter, were hard hit by the pandemic, but the area’s draw has kept business running, Gray said.

“Castle Rock has been on fire, even through the pandemic,” he said.

Like Lone Tree, new infrastructure projects will similarly help Castle Rock continue to pursue its goals going forward.

“Without key infrastructure, nothing really moves forward,” Gray said.

Even the unincorporated parts of Douglas County are contributing to the surge in population.

Development in the county can only go so far, thanks to protections placed on the county’s ample open space, but with cities, towns and unincorporated developments all moving full-steam ahead with their growth plans, there is plenty of runway for the county’s continued expansion, even beyond what it’s seen so far.
