Littleton school board candidates look to future in forum Candidates speak on funding, equity and mental health

As Littleton Public Schools nears its third year of educating in a COVID world, candidates for its Board of Education grappled with a slew of issues from funding to mental health.

During an Oct. 6 forum hosted at the school district’s Education Services Center, candidates made their case for how they would tackle the district’s current challenges and why they were the best choice for a seat at the table. Five candidates are running for three seats in the mail-in ballot election, which ends Nov. 2.

Funding hung high over candidates, as community members in attendance pressed each about their knowledge of where LPS gets its money and how they would ensure it is retained.

“Understanding different options for how we could potentially revamp the funding at the state level is some-

thing I’d be very interested in advocating for moving forward,” said candidate Jon Lisec, a software architect, who said he’s spoken with state senators about the need for more money in education.

Candidate Joan Anderssen, who teaches economics and finance at Arapahoe Community College, said LPS needs to look at multiple funding options in order to stay afloat.

state falls short.

Anderssen also pointed to LPS’ declining enrollment rates and said better financial stability would be key to retaining students.

The issue of equality versus equity, and where resources should be focused for students, prompted most candidates to commit to equitable learning.

“There’s a huge difference,” said Angela Christensen, the only incumbent who is seeking reelection. “Equality is giving everyone the same thing and equity is giving everyone, whether that’s students or staff, what they need, when they need and how they need it in order to be successful.”

Christensen said she has twin children who received different but equitable educations through LPS based on their needs, and said the district needs to meet students where they are.

Candidate Andrew Graham, president and CEO of a medical consulting firm, said students come from a diversity of backgrounds and said all children must be given an equal shot.

“We need to make a prosperous opportunity for them, regardless of what path that is,” he said.

Dale Elliot, an electrical engineer and retired member of the Air Force, broke with the other four candidates who made vocal commitments to equity and said he is opposed to “that approach.”

“Equity means we have equal outcomes, and the outcomes are very hard to achieve,” he said. “In our country today we’re trying to force that.”

Candidates were also asked about mental health, especially in the era of COVID-19, which has exacerbated many pre-existing issues for students, faculty and staff.

Graham said he has seen firsthand the mounting mental health crisis facing students today. He has dealt directly with teen suicide at LPS and his own son was locked in

a closet at his school while STEM School Highlands Ranch faced an active shooter who claimed the life of one of its students.

“We definitely need more frontline support,” he said, adding that all high school students should take therapeutic mindfulness classes to help process such tragedies.

Anderssen said the U.S. “doesn’t look at mental health the way we look at physical health” and said if the district is able to increase its funding it should prioritize mental health resources.

Though candidates made efforts to avoid controversies that have engulfed many school districts across Colorado and the country, the debate around masks and critical race theory surfaced during the forum.

While most candidates tiptoed around supporting the district’s mask mandate, instead saying that schools were legally bound to follow the health order of TriCounty Health, Anderssen said some people “don’t value keeping students safe” by being opposed to masks.

“We know from natural experiments that having masks on students (makes us) 20% healthier,” she said. “We have to protect all of our students.”

Critical race theory, a decadesold academic concept that seeks to explain American society through the lens of systemic racism, has been branded by right-wing politicians and media as divisive, with some claiming it is being pushed in K-12 education.

Elliot, the retired Air Force member, labeled the theory a “cancer” and has staked his campaign on ensuring it is never included in LPS’ curriculum. LPS does not currently teach critical race theory and board members have little say over school curriculum, which is usually approved at the state level.

Lisec, the software architect, said it is important to teach critical thinking and championed a diverse range of thought and viewpoints.

Graham agreed.

“Because the decision we’re asking our kids to make isn’t what their grandfather did,” he said.

“It’s whatever they’re going to be faced with, we want them to have wide eyes and open perspectives.”

And I would want to translate that care, and passion, and empathy to those that need their government to work for them. I want to make a community that my daughter can grow up in and be proud of.

What would you say are your most important qualifications for the office you’re seeking?

I’ve had a wide variety of professional and personal experiences that would make me an ideal candidate for city council. I’ve traveled across the country and across the world, working with the most marginalized communities in politically and financially difficult situations to work on infrastructure, governance and social service projects. But my most important qualification isn’t my professional background, it is my ability to give my heart and my passion to learning something new, to listening to and working with new people that may not share the same worldview as my own, and to delivering results in difficult circumstances.

If elected, what would be your first priority in office?

My priority is and will always be to listen. I would listen to those with experience in the city staff, listen to those with a long and storied history in Littleton, listen to the business owners, the schools, the developers, the neighborhood associations and those that are most marginalized in our city. That means continuing my outreach beyond just campaigning to provide a simple, transparent and consistent form of engagement for those in District 3. I’d like to develop a system to show how I am translating concerns into council and communicating the outcomes back to my constituents.

What in your view is the greatest single issue facing Littleton and how would you address it?

The single greatest issue facing Littleton is the deferred critical maintenance on our infrastructure, and I hope that our residents can vote for the sales tax increase in November to make this investment in Littleton’s future. A close second would be the lack of housing diversity and accessibility throughout the city. Increasing accessible housing for a wide range of economic ability is a difficult task, but the strength and health of our local economy, our schools, our businesses and our infrastructure dictates that we need a greater economic diversity to keep all these critical systems functioning.

I’ve been involved with the city council a long time, going to all of Bingham their meetings for 15 years. I lived here long enough and learned enough about the city that I feel like I want to and have the knowledge to make a contribution to the leadership of Littleton.

What would you say are your most important qualifications for the office you’re seeking?

Being an engineer is a good start. Being in the Army also helps. The time I’ve spent observing the city government in operation, learning how it works, being involved with it as a resident for long years has allowed me to climb the ‘learning curve’ such that I’m ready to be productive on city council, in my first meeting.

If elected, what would be your first priority in office?

There are four developments likely to come forward on south Santa Fe Drive; from north to south Aspen Glen, the Mineral and south Santa Fe intersection improvement, and the two proposed developments on the Ensor property.

Along with these are the Colorado Department of Transportation’s study on south Santa Fe. I would encourage a great amount of cooperation between stakeholders to get a large comprehensive plan together that covers all these elements of this large area. If done well this could become a great area of Littleton.

What in your view is the greatest single issue facing Littleton and how would you address it?

The current greatest issue is sales tax. How would I fix it? I’m on a citizens committee to get ballot issue 3A passed. The greatest single issue is traffic. How would I address it? This is part of my first priority issue, the intersection of south Santa Fe and Mineral. Littleton has an intermediate plan costing about $9 million, and an expensive plan to cure the problem costing $90 million. I would encourage Littleton to proceed with the intermediate plan along with a large amount of coordination with the stakeholders of the other developments I’ve mentioned.

Driscoll seeks to champion sales tax increase Incumbent has linked his campaign to measure 3A

For Patrick Driscoll, a 21-year resident of Littleton, there are various projects and challenges that need to be met throughout the city, but few are as important and as immediate as getting Ballot Measure 3A over the finish line.

And he knows the stakes should it fail.

Since he began serving on the council in November 2017, Driscoll has heard the same warning over and over again: if something is not done to replenish the city’s capital projects fund, it will have no money to invest in major infrastructure and city services, such as police, within the next four years.

“Getting 3A passed is a huge one,” Driscoll said.

The measure would raise Littleton’s sales tax by 0.75%, which would raise about $9 million in annual revenue for the city’s capital projects fund, according to city officials.

Driscoll, who seeks reelection to Littleton’s council District 1 seat, said he advocated for 3A making it onto this year’s ballot, even as most of the city’s staff mulled pushing the question off for another year.

“I said, ‘We don’t have time, we’ve got to get it on this ballot and get our capital projects fund project back to where it needs to be so we can do the week that citizens expect us to do,” he said.

“The roads, medians and our buildings and our public works and police fleets.”

Should the measure fail, Driscoll said council would be forced to work with city staff to make cuts.

But Driscoll is also balancing his role as a steward of the city with his affirmation for local businesses.

Driscoll initially ran for council with a pro-business message. He serves as the council liaison for the Littleton Business Chamber, which advocated a smaller 0.50% sales tax increase.

As he campaigns for 3A, Driscoll said he would be open to sunset-

ting the sales tax to 0.50% should the needs of the city be met and is willing to work with business leaders to find common ground.

“I value the relationship I have with Littleton Business Chamber,” Driscoll said. “I’m always open …

I think we have a great working relationship.”

Along with 3A, Driscoll wants to see through a number of projects and priorities that he’s worked on over the past four years on council.

One is the potential formation of a downtown district authority that seeks to transfer the management of Littleton’s downtown from the city to property owners. Driscoll also wants to cement plans for what the downtown area will look like following Denver Water’s pending replacement of the water main that runs through Littleton.

“We want to get together and find out what’s the town going to look like when we put it back together,” he said.

If Driscoll defeats his challenger, Candice Ferguson, and maintains his District 1 seat, the council will still see two to three newcomers.

But Driscoll is confident that a new council would be able to jump on the work that has already been started.

“They would obviously want to be up to speed with where we are and what we’ve been up to,” he said.

Overall, Driscoll said voters should reelect him to keep an experienced hand on the wheel driving the city.

“It’s been a fast four years and I’d really like to see some of these projects get completed,” he said.

“And I’m really looking forward to Nov. 3 after 3A passes to see how much better the city can become with the improvements we have on the docket.”

Ferguson strives to center human voices She vows to champion diversity and affordable housing

Candice Ferguson, a longtime community activist, volunteer and former candidate for the Colorado House of Representatives, wants big change for the City of Littleton.

Affordable housing. Mental health resources. More support for immigrants. But all of it starts with listening to the community.

“I would like to see more diversity in our city council conversations, specifically with our Black and Latinx communities,” the city council District 1 candidate said.

“I don’t see them represented in city council meetings or in those conversations. And I don’t think anybody is extending a hand to invite them.”

Ferguson is critical of the council’s recent decision to defund the Littleton Immigration Resources Center, a low-cost service that has helped hundreds of immigrants gain citizenship for over a decade.

“I believe that immigrants are part of the fabric of Littleton,” she said.

Ferguson, who is running against incumbent councilmember Patrick Driscoll, said she would bring a “drastically different” approach to how council members connect with their community.

Driscoll was one of five council members who voted to defund the immigration center. Ferguson said those decisions are what leave out voices in Littleton’s community.

She said she believes if more diversity is present in council conversations, it could open doors and expand ambitions for how Littleton can be a city for all.

One of those areas is affordable housing, which Ferguson champions. She doesn’t see the interest from council that she believes is warranted.

“What I’m seeing right now is a very narrow view of the definition of affordable,” she said.

With rising housing and rental prices throughout the Denver area, Ferguson said younger people are at risk of being priced out of Littleton. Retired older people, she said, also face difficulties affording the city that they have lived in for so many years.

“If we are not taking care of both generational end caps, we will no longer have a thriving, robust, diverse city,” she said.

A flashpoint for the city recently has been the proposed redevelopment of Aspen Grove, a 33-acre shopping center in south Littleton that has long generated dwindling sales tax revenue. Developers are proposing a new vision for the site, cutting down on commercial space and creating up to 2,000 residential units.

While Ferguson said she supports redevelopment she is also concerned about who housing is being built for. She said she has yet to see specifics about how much affordable housing would make up the residences being proposed.

“It must include an inclusive plan for all, not just the affluent few,” she said.

This campaign is not Ferguson’s first stint in politics. She worked with state representatives to write House Bill 1120, a youth suicide and prevention bill signed into law in 2019.

She also ran and lost in last year’s Democratic primary for Colorado House District 38. That experience, however, gave her the opportunity to hear from a range of voices, something she has made a cornerstone of her current campaign.

“I learned that the residents of Littleton, and Arapahoe County, are deeply impassioned about this town,” she said. “And they just want to be heard, and that’s what I will fight for.”

One of a series of profiles of Littleton City Council candidates.

For Stephen Barr, community service has always been a passion.

Barr, who has lived in Littleton for three years, currently serves as program manager for the Community Engineering Corps, a subset of the American Water Works Association that is based in Denver.

The nonprofit organization provides services for water infrastructure projects for low-income communities across the U.S. Before that, he worked on foreign aid projects for major wastewater projects.

Now, Barr is running for a council seat in District 3 in the city’s mail-in election, seeking to bring his passion for public service.

“Littleton has become my home,” he said. “My background and my experience … has always been about improving the place that we live.”

Barr said he has for some time been seeking a way to find a bigger platform to help people, and with council he has.

The city has a host of needs, Barr said, and he believes his ability to bring both technical and public service experience to his community is what will help guide him on council.

“I work with small town managers and city council members and public works directors as part of my day job,” he said. “But my role is actually to be an interface between the public and the volunteers and the technical work that’s being done. It’s a space where … I can really understand policy, regulation and convey these things in meaningful and accessible ways to the public.”

As Littleton continues to grow along with the surrounding metro area, Barr said he is eyeing bigger businesses that can help boost the city’s economy and, by extension, lift up its citizens.

“I think small businesses tend to get painted as the last and only solution to fiscal stability for a city and a government and their budget,” Barr said. “A healthy city budget and income generation comes from a diversity of sources.”

He said he is aware of the risks large businesses can pose to

communities when they fail but if Littleton is able to balance its economy with a range of business types, it will continue to thrive.

“Large businesses provide services or commercial opportunities that are not currently accessible in Littleton where our residents have to drive outside our city limits and spend outside our city limits to get the things that they need,” he said.

One example would be an outdoor recreation outlet, which is something that Barr said would supply a demand from citizens while keeping in line with the city’s personality.

The prospects of commercial expansion come at a critical time for the city, which placed a question on this year’s ballot asking citizens to raise the city’s sales tax for the first time in almost 50 years.

Dubbed 3A, the ballot measure would increase sales tax by 0.75% and is projected to bring in $9 million annually for the city’s capital projects fund, which is set to hit $0 by 2025. This fund pays for vital city services such as infrastructure and maintenance.

Barr, along with the other eight council candidates, all support 3A passing. And having more business types in the city will only help maintain a sustainable budget, Barr said.

One contentious flashpoint for development is the proposed sweeping overhaul of the Aspen Grove shopping center. The site’s owners want to build up to 2,000 new residences, create green plazas and potentially raise some building heights.

Barr said he understands the concern from some community members about such dramatic redevelopment but sees some change as economically necessary, unlike his opponent, Paul Bingham, who has taken a more cautious approach to plans like Aspen Grove.

As he sets his sights on the future of Littleton’s growth, Barr said he would be a beacon of progress if elected to council.

“I have a passion for moving the ball forward,” he said. “I like to see our city thrive and improve.”

Bingham, longstanding city watchdog, eyes council seat Candidate runs on campaign to preserve community character

Paul Bingham, a 59-year resident of Littleton, has been to more city council meetings than most.

“I’ve gone to every city council meeting for 15 years just to keep track of what they’re doing,” said Bingham, who is no stranger to long nights sitting in front of councilmembers, listening and sometimes speaking during public comment periods.

Now he wants to be on the other side of that room with a seat at the table.

Bingham, who is running for a council seat in District 3 in this year’s mail-in election, said he has a long-held and intimate understanding of council that makes him the right person for the job.

“I don’t need to run up a learning curve,” he said. “I’ve done that.”

In past years Bingham has joined current councilmember Carol Fey, who is also running in this year’s election for mayor, to support other council candidates in their campaigns. With these years of experience, Bingham said he has the ability to lead as a councilmember himself.

Bingham is running a self-funded campaign and reported spending $480 with $0 raised according to first-round reports of campaign donations and expenditures filed with the city clerk recently.

“I know how much a district campaign costs because I’ve been involved with others,” he said. “It’s been a great time saver.”

Bingham said preserving Littleton’s character is a crucial aspect of

his campaign.

As Littleton and the surrounding metro area’s population grows, the city faces a slew of challenges from traffic congestion to building changes.

“We’re having a difficult time maintaining community character,” Bingham said. “We’ve got quite a few developments that have come along and risen up in the face of that campaign to maintain our community character.”

During an Oct. 5 city council meeting, Bingham joined with a host of other concerned residents in asking council to hold off on a decision on the proposed sweeping redevelopments for Aspen Grove, a shopping center located in south Littleton.

The center has for years seen declining sales tax revenue, and developers are proposing new mixed-use development that would include up to 2,000 residences, revamped plazas and increased building heights to spur new economic growth.

Bingham, during the public comment period of the Oct. 5 meeting, said he feared Aspen Grove’s makeover could fall short of its goals, ending up like the mostly vacant shopping area of Littleton Village.

It’s the kind of change that Bingham is wary about. He said while he supports necessary development, the city must be careful not to build

or revamp areas in a way that would infringe on its identity.

Bingham said he is supportive of the city’s new moves with regards to how it zones for development, taking an approach that lets the city tell developers what it wants as opposed to what developers can’t do.

“I believe that’s going to help us figure out that balance and keep it balanced,” he said.

But he also knows change is coming. For him, it’s a matter of meeting the city’s needs while allowing for growth.

He wants to build upon zoning ordinances that will give the city power when negotiating with developers.

Along with growth and development, Bingham said the city needs to do more for people experiencing homelessness. He said one of his first proposals as a councilmember would be to install lockers for people who are homeless to store their belongings.

“I think it could be as simple as surplus school lockers with built-in combination locks that we could provide,” he said, adding that lockers could be included in the proposed bridge house that seeks to connect people experiencing homelessness with the right services.

As he looks forward to the final weeks of the election, Bingham is confident that his years of experience will carry him to success if elected.

“I can land on the council and start running right away,” he said.

Arapahoe voters to decide on outdoor funds

Ballot Issue 1A proposes continuation of existing tax

In the election that ends Nov. 2, Arapahoe County voters will be asked to continue to fund the county’s open spaces, trails and parks with the continuation of a 0.25-cent sales and use tax that is already in place.

The Open Space and Trails program was authorized by voters in 2003 and has since supported construction or renovation of 160 parks, trailheads and heritage-area projects. It has also helped to conserve 31,000 acres of open spaces.

With municipal partners, 70 miles of trails have been completed, as have improvements to trails including the Mary Carter Greenway, the High Line Canal and the Cherry Creek Trail.

So far, $257 million has been awarded from this tax to municipalities and special districts through grants and joint projects.

Proceeds from the tax can be used to conserve lands that protect water quality in rivers, lakes and streams; protect and maintain natural areas,

wildlife habitats and open space; and maintain and improve neighborhood parks and trails.

Funds also help to maintain and preserve historic sites; preserve working farms and ranches; and provide more active recreation opportunities.

Those in support of the ballot measure say it can help preserve open spaces, trails, parks, heritage center and streams for future generations.

In the ballot guide sent to county voters, opponents of the measure say that if the measure passes, the tax “will no longer have to be approved or authorized by the voters. ... It will never expire.” They also complain that the county’s openspace program has a $43 million unspent fund balance, “so why do they need more?”

A “yes” to 1A would extend this tax beyond its current expiration date until repealed as a voterapproved revenue change — something that those opposed to the measure call out as a red flag.

A “no” vote means the current tax would expire in 2023.

How we manage change impacts retention of the best

W

elcome back to part three of this five-part series on “The 5 C’s of Retaining Top Talent.” In week one we discussed the importance of connecting with our team members, and last week we added a discussion around WINNING collaboration.

Recognizing that WORDS everyone on our team, including our top performers, wants to be part of the creative and strategic thinking that will lead to personal and professional success.

Next up is the Michael Norton role of change and how managing change can make or break us when it comes to attracting, hiring, developing, and retaining top performers.

As I prepared for this series, I had time to spend a few hours on my favorite beach. A beach I knew growing up, and a beach I visited often even after moving to Colorado.

And as I walked along the shoreline, I thought about how much I have

seen the beach change over the years. And although it changes with every storm, wind gust, and tide, it is still the beach.

Superstorm Sandy back in 2012 leveled most of the homes along this stretch of beach. Most of which have been rebuilt, even more beautifully than before. Dredging and relocating sand has also played a role in the protection of the beach from the erosion that comes along with the storms, winds, and tides.

The beach endures the changes that the storms, winds, and tides throw its way. This is similar to our businesses in a way. Businesses today face storms, winds, and tides too. They come in the form of shifts in the economy, an unexpected pandemic, innovation and technology advancements, societal pressures, and a volatile political landscape. As we think about attracting, hiring, developing, and retaining current and future top performers, we must acknowledge that how we manage change, will directly impact how we hire, who we hire, and how long they stay with us as a part of our team.

Join me back on the beach for a moment. As I walked along the

shoreline, I walked with others combing the beach for pristine shells, sea glass, and other treasures that the new tide had washed ashore. I watched as people would pick up a shell, look at it and determine to keep it or toss it back. That made me think of the top talent that is out there looking to join a winning team and growing company.

Just like the walk along the beach, there are many people trying to find those top performers, those potential new team members that can make such a huge difference for our business.

Our job as leaders and coworkers is to walk the beach as often as we can. To look for not only the best and the brightest, but to also see what is broken, what needs change, or what change needs to be managed differently. Tom Peters and Robert H. Waterman used the phrase, “Management by wandering around,” in their book, “In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America’s Best Run Companies.” It means we purposely walk the beaches of our business looking for opportunities to recognize people, make changes, and learn what is most

important about the way we manage change and lead our business.

Is this a case for “Change Management?” In a way, yes. But “Change Management” will be limited in its success if we fail to first identify what needs to change and then include a change readiness and communications strategy. When we lack connection, overlook collaboration, and then mismanage change, others will easily come by and pick up the best and brightest as they walk along the shoreline looking for top talent for their own organization.

The storms, winds, and tides will certainly shape our business, they will cause us to change, and change for the better. Are you ready to manage those changes? the young and otherwise healthy, become critically ill and even die from COVID-19.

Colorado hospitals report that 81% of currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated and there are zero Coloradans hospitalized for vaccine side-effects. The hospitalization rate from COVID-19 is about four times higher in unvaccinated vs. vaccinated (726 vs. 168 per 100,000 cases). The death rate from COVID-19 is about six times higher for the unvaccinated vs vaccinated (47 vs. 8.1 per 1 million cases).

If I’m pregnant, should I get the COVID-19 vaccine? Yes. The CDC formally recommended COVID-19 vaccination to women “who are pregnant, recently pregnant (including those who are lactating), who are trying to become pregnant now, or who might become pregnant in the future.” In this group, the benefits of vaccination outweigh known or potential risks.

As of Sept. 27, more than 125,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in pregnant people, including more than 22,000 hospitalized cases and 161 deaths.

Of the pregnant women hospitalized with COVID-19, 97% of them

were unvaccinated. Getting vaccinated protects children (unborn, breastfeeding and all under 12), who cannot yet receive the vaccine.

Are vaccines dangerous? No. Vaccines are much safer than COVID-19 infection. There are rare side effects in a very small number of patients. However, getting COVID-19 can make you very sick, and you might even die. Even if you don’t die, you may develop lifelong symptoms.

If I have had COVID-19, should I still get the vaccine? Yes. Unvaccinated individuals are more than twice as likely to be reinfected with COVID-19 than those who were fully vaccinated after initially contracting the virus.

Vaccines also provide longer-lasting immunity. Lastly, the vaccines have been shown to protect people against the currently circulating types of the virus, called variants.

Natural infection may not offer the same protection.

Can you get COVID-19 twice? Yes. Your body’s immune system response to COVID-19 is highly variable, so you can get it twice. That’s also why different people can have such different symptoms from the

virus. We do know that getting vaccinated after an infection means you are much less likely to get infected twice.

Do the vaccines protect against long-haul COVID-19? Yes. About a third of COVID-19 cases may have ongoing symptoms that last months, a situation known as “long- haul COVID.” But this is extremely rare in the vaccinated. Research shows that 30-40% of people with long-haul COVID symptoms, such as brain fog, persistent shortness of breath or stomach issues, improve after receiving a COVID vaccine, which may be the vaccine helping the immune system fight the remaining virus.

Can getting the COVID-19 vaccine protect against the emergence of new variants? Yes. This is one of the most important aspects of immunization. Immunization protects against the development of new variants, because the virus is not given the chance to mutate and evolve when it jumps from person to person.

Colorado Press Women celebrates 80 years

With a long history of producing community journalism, several newspapers that are now part of Colorado Community Media have been led by strong women since they started being published.

As part of celebrating its 80th year as an organization, Colorado Press Women (CPW) recently recognized women from four Colorado Community Media (CCM) newspapers who were employed by or owned the publications, dating back to the 1940s. The women were also original members of CPW. CCM honorees include: Co-publisher Katherine Bemis of the Littleton Independent.

CPW also paid tribute to Daisy Baber, a longtime columnist with the Lyons Recorder.

Accepting the certificates on behalf of CCM during the Oct. 2 hybrid meeting was new publisher Linda Shapley. Like the women being recognized by CPW, Shapley brings decades of newspaper experi-

ence to CCM. “I’m honored to continue the news leadership that these remarkable journalists helped begin 80 years ago,” Shapley said. “As the original founders said, ‘Press women have a weapon to shape the peace or destruction of the world,’ and I aim to use that weapon responsibly to build up the next generation of journalists and create stronger communities across the Front Range.”

Shapley is referring to the early days of CPW in 1941 when it became an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), which was established in 1938.

In recruiting CPW members, on the eve of the U.S. entry into World War II, NFPW founder Bertha Bless said, “Press women have the opportunity of the century to create a thinking America that can lead the world out of its present chaos. We must save not only the right of the press but also Americans. Grassroots journalism represented in small town and country newspapers doesn’t know its own power. Press women have a weapon to shape the peace of destruction of the world.”

Today, CPW is a diverse organization of professional communicators, both men and women, who are reporters, editors, broadcasters, public relations practitioners, publishers, advertising and marketing practitioners, college communications educators, graphic designers, photographers, freelance writers and others.

Early on, CPW focused on establishing rural libraries. Today, Nance said CPW works to help people sort fact from fiction on the Internet.

LIFE Horse culture still kicking in modern West

Growth changes state but love of horses is forever

I

n 1950, metro Denver’s population hovered right around 500,000. Farms and horse properties could still be found throughout the close-in suburbs.

By the mid-1970s, the population had more than doubled and subdivisions had eaten away at sprawling open spaces. But it was still common to see leisure riders on horses, trotting down trails along Morrison Road, Alameda Avenue or Dry Creek Road.

Today, the metro population is closing in on 3 million fast. Development and an explosion in residents have made things feel more like a big city than the cowtown vibes of yesteryear. But if you look closely, you’ll still find horse culture holds a special place in the heart of folks throughout the metro area.

It’s a warm, late September morning as Joe McClellan makes his way toward his first job of the day. With an unbelievable view of the Flatirons as his backdrop, McClellan gets down to business.

His dual degrees in architectural and civil engineering will be put to good use at the job site, but not to design or build a house. He’s there to shoe some horses.

McClellan is a certified Natural Balance Farrier. More than a decade ago, he traded in his engineering career for a life working with the animals he loves. He said he was always fascinated by horses and a 2009 Natural Balance Hoof Trimming course set him on the path he’d been looking for. Applying engineering principals to every hoof he shoes, McClellan found a way to combine two things he loves into the freedom to work for himself.

Shoeing horses from Fort Collins to Castle Rock and everywhere in between, and owning two horses of his own, McClellan spends his life immersed in local horse culture.

Karen Richard owns the property with the fantastic view. She moved here in 1984 to be able to keep her horses on her own land. She’s owned horses for close to 50 years.

She says in those days she would drive more than 100 miles to work and back each day to make her dream a reality. She didn’t come from a horse-owning family.

“I was just an anomaly, I guess,” she says.

Richard’s horses, Tilly and Summer, are two of McClellan’s three clients at this stop. The other is a 23-year-old palomino Richard boards, named Sweetie. Sweetie’s owner, Bob, says she’s taught him a lot.

“Like how to be a human,” he says.

previous owner agreed to let him buy her.

“I don’t refer to myself as her owner,” he says. “I refer to myself as her staff.”

Over the years, Richard has done both Western and English riding styles, competing in dressage, a form of horse riding performed in exhibition, with Tilly, a liver-chestnut thoroughbred. Now, Richard is content to just ride on her own property for fun. She says horses have given her more than she can express throughout her life. More than just fulfillment, she says horses have given her the gift of being present in her surroundings.

Beyond their beauty, she thinks horses have a special place in this world. McClellan agrees.

“Human beings couldn’t be where they are today without horses supporting us,” he says. “They transported us. They fought battles with us. They farmed with us. They’re amazing animals and we actually don’t deserve them. They deserve for us to treat them better.”

Sixty miles southeast, Heidi Knab is chatting with customers at the Rusty Spur Saddle Shop in Parker. Her business card lists her position as “Head Cowgirl.” She also happens to be the owner of the tack/gear shop she founded after two decades teaching school.

A lifelong rider, Knab says one day she was driving all over town looking for a new saddle. Her inability to find what she was looking for gave her the idea to start the business. Now, more than three years later, she says things are good and her business is continuing to grow.

“The timing was right for me to change careers and open the business,” she says. “We started off with 30 saddles and now we sometimes have up to 200.”

She jumped into a three-year lease with no prior business experience, but says she always knew it was going to work. She also has 1,500 consigners helping her stock merchandise and a deal with Colorado Saddlery to carry their new saddles. The store also has everything a rider could need for English and Western tack, clothing, boots, blankets, trailer supplies, grooming products and more.

According to Knab, Douglas county ranks second in the nation for horse ownership per capita.

“It’s huge, for horses,” she says.

“I would have thought it would be Kentucky or something like that, but Douglas county is way up there.”

Despite her parents not being horse people, Knab says she and her sister started doing barrel races at local shows and a ton of trail riding when she was a kid.

“Horses are enchanting animals.

I bought my first horse with babysitting money when I was 11 — of course, I also had to take out a loan from my parents,” she says. “My sister got me into it. She was really horse crazy.”

Now, as she gets ready to enter her fourth year as a business owner, Knab says word of mouth is still her primary form of engaging new customers. She also employs staff members who have different expertise in riding styles, to appeal to Douglas county’s broad customer base.

Guidance from other women in the tack industry was invaluable when she started out. But that didn’t surprise her. She thinks horse people she’s met are some of the most loyal, appreciative, kind individuals around.

And that loyalty goes both ways.

Old adages about not mixing business with pleasure notwithstanding, Knab says opening the store actually feeds her passion for riding. She says she’s learned a ton from customers and hopes she’s paying that knowledge forward as well.

Her repertoire includes showings, clinics, an obstacle challenge series and a lot of horse camping.

Carol Perry is a native Texan who’s called Douglas county home since the ‘80s. She’s been a horse person her whole life. But she’s retiring from the hobby and recently she’s been selling off gear through Knab’s store.

Her stable of horses has gone from eight down to one — a Swedish warmblood grand prix dressage horse that is 26 years old.

Perry says retiring from the horse world has been an incredibly difficult decision. At her age, she says she wants to simplify her life, but the challenges that everincreasing population and development have created for riders have hastened her departure.

She says resources for horse people are becoming more restrictive each year and the people passing legislation aren’t paying enough attention to the billion-dollar equine industry here. But it’s also increasingly difficult to compete for trail space with mountain bikers — even in places like The Pines and Dawson Butte that were created to include horses.

If you’re a lifelong horse person, or just thinking about maybe getting started, Knab says her shop is a nexus — a place people can come to get information and find their people. She holds community events once per quarter and welcomes everyone with a passion for horses to attend.

‘Cross Words’ is new work by local playwright

The configuration of the smallish Bond Trimble Theatre at Vintage Theatre in Aurora dictates a set, designed by company director Bernie Cardell, that has the audience almost in the living room/ dining room with the actors — and it works well! The company is presenting a clever new work by Denver playwright Scott Gibson, “Cross Words.”

The play was the winner of Vintage Theatre Company’s 2019 Mystery Thriller new Play Showcase, and is now in its first production — a milestone for any new play.

Lights go up with a frowning woman, Flora (Molly Turner), seated at the dining table working on a crossword puzzle ... “How’s her high-

ness?” says her sarcastic husband Tim (Luke RahmsdorffTerry).

“I hate our life,” she snaps.

“One person’s life is another person’s `just in time,’” he replies.

The mood is set and we learn that the couple has come to live with her elderly Aunt Rosamunde, assuming that they will inherit her considerable fortune when she passes on ... But they’re impatient with the elderly relative’s ongoing vigor — and with the run-down house and leaky roof ... What if she were to fall down those stairs ...? “We still have to decide which of us will ...”

Enter Jan Cleveland, as Aunt Rosamunde’s attorney Clarrisa, who strides into

the setting dressed in a spiffy tweed vested suit, obviously suspicious of the couple, as she looks after her client’s interests.

“Aunt Rosamunde called you?” Tim wonders.

“We planned on tomorrow night,” she replies.

Tim comments about their agreement with Aunt Rosamunde “to make it worth our while, our future seen to ...” if they were to live with her for a while ... helping with her dayto day needs.

Aunt Rosamunde rings a bell upstairs, calling for assistance ... Scowling, Flora heads for the stairs, which protrude into the dining room, a constant reminder.

Next scene has Tim practicing CPR on a beach ball ...

Young, somewhat-challenged nephew Emory (Elton

Tanega) appears: “Mr. Benson says to drop these buckets off and go right home ... Why were you giving CPR to that beach ball? And why were you calling it Aunt Rosamunde?

That ball doesn’t have a heart ...”

Turns out Emory and Flora are to share the inheritance.

“I left my shoe and sock upstairs,” Emory says, returning soon: “The lady upstairs wants to see you ... I helped her get up ... she’s pretty mad ...”

Later, Emory staggers into the house, with a bloodied face. Clarissa runs in soon after — she had collided with Emory’s bike ... “I’ve always ben a careful driver — he was there without warning.”

“I already knew,” he said.

The lawyer had called his wife.

Vintage Theatre Company was founded in 2002 by Craig Bond, Debbie Laureta, Chris Goranson, Lindsay Sanders Goranson and David Trimble, with a space on 17th Street, and it was moved into the Dayton Street location in 2012, where they have three performance spaces: the Jeffrey Nickelson Auditorium, the Bond Trimble Theatre and the Berg-Young Cabaret Stage.

PACE Center celebrates 10 years

Facility offers free, reduced-cost events

The Parker Arts, Culture & Events Center, also known as PACE, is celebrating a decade in the community this month with a series of free and reduced-cost events.

The PACE Center opened its doors on Oct. 28, 2011 after the town council approved the purchase of the land and a $21.7 million construction budget for the project.

Carrie Glassburn, the PACE Center’s cultural director, wrote in a recent letter to the community

that the center has welcomed over 1 million patrons to its facilities since opening.

“Thanks to the foresight of several Town leaders and citizens who recognized the importance the arts play in building a strong community, the PACE Center was designed and developed and quickly became the cultural hub for Parker and the surrounding region,” Glassburn’s letter said.

The celebratory events will run daily from Oct. 16 through the 23 and will include concerts, trivia and art shows. The full list of shows is below: Oct. 16 — Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Happy Hour pre-show event, $30 Oct. 17 — Art walk, free Oct. 18 — Little Free Art Gallery

During its first 10 years, the PACE Center has hosted 350 weddings and receptions, rented event spaces to 750 groups, offered 30,000 hours of cultural classes and presented 1,700 performances in the theater, according to Glassburn’s letter. The center also offers art galleries and school break camps for art, music, dance, science, theater and cooking.

In 2004 and 2005, the town began looking into building a new arts facility and purchased the property in 2006. The groundbreaking on the project took place in April 2010.

“Thank you for supporting the arts and allowing us to continue making fun happen,” Glassburn wrote. “We can’t wait for the next 10 years.”

‘People see it as a homeless junkie getting killed’ A year after the still-unsolved slaying of Joe Hix, his family struggles

On a lonely spot in the industrial district where the Little Dry Creek bike path crosses Platte River Drive in northwest Englewood, a handengraved metal plate is screwed into a wooden post.

It reads: “JOSEPH MICHAEL HIX — MY FRIEND DIED HERE.” The little plaque is the only marker commemorating the life of Joe Hix, 32, who was stabbed to death there on Aug. 25, 2020.

Nearly 14 months after the brazen daylight slaying along a busy bike path, no arrests have been made in the case. The nearby homeless camp where Hix stayed has long since been swept by authorities, its former residents scattered.

Much of what remains is intangible: the devastation of Hix’s family.

Memories of a brilliant young man, whose descent into darkness broke the hearts of friends once drawn to his magnetic personality. The burning injustice of his unsolved homicide.

“I see him in my dreams almost every night,” said Dean Lockhead, 36, Hix’s older brother. “It’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, to my family.”

Englewood police have had little to say about the case. Chief Sam Watson, who took the helm of the department in August, did not respond to an interview request. Instead, a department spokesperson sent a statement: “This is still an active investigation (on which) the Police Department is focused,” the statement reads in part.

“We are still receiving tips, which detectives are diligently working to follow up on. The Englewood Police Department is still seeking any information that will aid in the identification and apprehension of suspect(s).”

But Lockhead said his hope for seeing the case solved is dim. It’s been eight months since he last heard from detectives, he said. Though a nearby security camera captured three people fleeing the scene on bikes, and a $2,000 reward through Metro Denver Crime Stoppers remains available, no one has come forward to identify the killer.

Lockhead said he fears the nature of Hix’s life and the circumstances of his death have made it easy for the world to move on.

“Joe was not a sympathetic victim,” he said. “People see it as a homeless junkie getting killed. But he was so many things — an artist, a caregiver for our mother, and my best friend.”

Struggling to accept life Hix and Lockhead spent their early years in Virginia, in a house that backed to a vast forest where the boys roamed on long summer days.

But when their father Michael, a construction worker and contractor, injured his back and became permanently disabled, the family’s situation spiraled. Without his income, they lost the house to the bank and moved in with relatives in Colorado. Mary, the boys’ mother, suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall that worsened her mental illness.

Michael never regained the ability to work and became dependent on painkillers, Lockhead said, and Mary endured stints in dismal treatment facilities. The family cobbled together a life on public assistance.

Through it all, the brothers had each other.

“The only other person with those experiences was Joe,” Lockhead said.

“There’s a certain part of me only he could understand.”

Hix struggled to accept how life unfolded for his family. As Lockhead went off to college, Hix dropped out of Englewood High School.

Still, he found fulfillment in his passions. Hix was a gifted computer technician, a talented photographer, and drew recognition for his electronic music, performing live shows under the stage name Plantaganda.

Hix enrolled at Arapahoe Community College, where he earned straight A’s — enough to secure him a scholarship at the University of Colorado Boulder, where Lockhead was a star student.

But Hix didn’t fit in socially in Boulder, and wasn’t ready for the rigors of academia. He began drinking more, and fell into a depression.

Before long he slunk back to Denver, and began a long, gradual decline that would come to consume his life.

‘He was always kind to me’ Though at times he seemed to thrive, remaining surrounded by loyal friends, Hix increasingly struggled with addiction. Music and photography faded from his life.

He was jailed for assault in 2015, court records show. Hix’s parents lost their subsidized apartment in Littleton in 2016, and all three wound up homeless.

Hix, increasingly lost in addiction, grew unpredictable and violent. A girlfriend and his own dad took out

restraining orders against him. More arrests and jail time followed.

In the final years of his life, Lockhead said even he had grown estranged from his brother, frustrated after so many fruitless attempts to help him recover. By the time Hix was killed, he was living on the streets, and the brothers were hardly speaking.

“One of the last times I spoke to Joe, he started crying and talking about how lonely he was, how he didn’t have anyone left,” Lockhead said. “I tried to get him to understand how difficult it was for people to be in his life.”

But even as Hix grew distant from his brother and friends, he remained close to his mom.

“He was my best friend,” Mary said. “There wasn’t anything we couldn’t talk about. He made me a better person.”

Mary has been racked with anguish and depression since her son’s death, she said. She continues to grapple with instability and mental illness, and recently escaped an abusive relationship.

Through it all, she yearns for her son’s love and compassion, for the days the two would spend sitting in the shade watching the clouds roll by, discussing matters large and small.

“He was always kind to me,” Mary said. “He treated me like I have a brain. He loved me wholeheartedly.”

Lockhead said that despite his brother’s damaged relationships, “when I organized his funeral, we had to limit guests to 50 (due to COVID restrictions). Lots more wanted to come. I wish he could have known that.”

Lockhead does what he can for his family, trying from a distance to arrange help for his mom, but said the network of support services for struggling people is fragmented and overwhelmed — something he remembers all too well from childhood.

Lockhead is trying to move forward. He and his wife are expecting their first child in January, a bright spot in a brutal time. Still, he laments that his son will never meet Hix. “If he could’ve gotten it together, Joe would’ve been a great uncle,” he said. “I think of all of what could have been.”

“I’m realistic about this situation — nothing will bring Joe back. I don’t want vengeance. Just some form of justice.”

Aspen Grove plans collide with community concerns Some fear disruption from redevelopment; others champion the project

Littleton residents packed the city council chamber for a marathon night of public comment during an Oct. 5 council meeting. The topic at hand: Contention over the proposed redevelopment of Aspen Grove, a shopping center in south Littleton that has for years seen declining revenue.

For about two hours, councilmembers heard from dozens of community members who voiced opposition to the project, raising concerns that such new development would inhibit their mountain views, strain Littleton’s population and swell traffic.

“This is a loosely named plan that ignored many of us and impacts too many of us,” said Eric Beitler, who urged the council to ultimately reject the proposal from the Gerrity Group, which acquired the shopping center in 2016 and is proposing the changes.

a main street-like feel for shoppers and residents.

Though it would cut down on the roughly 268,000 square feet of retail space to make room for housing, the plan would ensure at least 125,000 square feet remain available for commercial use. It would also raise building heights up to 85 feet.

Kevin Gerrity, managing director of the Gerrity Group, and Colby Young, vice president of assessment management, made their case during the council meeting for why such sweeping changes were the only way forward for the center’s future.

“We want to return Aspen Grove back to the vital property it once was when it was built 20 years ago,” Gerrity said.

The proposal comes at a crucial time for the city’s budget, as officials sound the alarm on Littleton’s capital projects fund, which is set to hit $0 by 2025. To combat this, councilmembers are asking voters

to approve a 0.75% sales tax increase in the upcoming mail-in election, which would bring in a projected $9 million annually.

Mayor Pro Tem Scott Melin said while he is open to mixed development for affordable housing and multi-unit dwellings, he is concerned about cutting down on commercial space at a time when more sales tax revenue is more important than ever.

“What I do not have an open mind about is taking existing commercial and transferring it to residential,” he said. “What happens to our sales tax revenues if the applicant only builds the minimum proposed 125,000 square feet of proposed commercial? I’d say we can assume that sales tax revenues are less than half of what they are now.”

than if it remains simply commercial, and, coupled with a makeover, the center will become a highly attractive shopping destination.

Population, environmental fears Gerrity’s ambitions clashed with a chorus of concerned residents following the developers’ pitch during the council meeting. Many community members said they feared what high-density housing would mean for traffic, the environment and Littleton’s character.

“With this plan we are selling our community to apartment renters,” Beitler said. “It fails to maintain the integrity of existing neighborhoods and communities.”

Paul Bingham, a Littleton resident who is also running for an open council seat in District 3 in the mail-in election, said he is worried the proposal risks becoming the next Littleton Village. That area is a mixed development area that promised residents a walkable shopping and dining community but has been plagued by a growing sinkhole and vacant land. Besides a Starbucks, a dentist’s office and a Culver’s fastfood restaurant, the area remains largely unused.

“We need to study this a little bit before we say ‘go ahead,’” said Bingham, who recommended that council table their decision.

Lynn Christensen, who lives in Littleton Village, said she wished a study had been conducted to assess the redeveloped center’s impact

on nearby environmental spaces such as South Platte Park, the Mary Carter Greenway and Carson Nature Center.

She also said she is skeptical of the economic growth that would be generated by the area if it were to be populated mostly by renters who she believes will not have the disposable income to spend on the higherpriced retail and dining options that currently occupy Aspen Grove.

“Council, please do not sell us down the river but instead help preserve the South Platte River corridor and small-town charm with a plan that actually meets the needs of Littleton,” she said. “We deserve better.”

With more housing also comes more traffic, residents warned.

City staff who have been working with the developer assured residents that because residential and retail traffic occurs at different times of the day, the effects of up to 2,000 more residences would most likely not be felt in the area, at least not dramatically.

“Come on, that’s a joke, that’s a joke,” said Rob Lee, who said traffic would almost certainly increase and called the redevelopment an “overreach.”

Some residents who live near Aspen Grove said they have been left out of the discussion around the site’s future.

“Many, many, many of us never got any mailings, never got any notices, never got anything,” said Michelle Mason, who lives in a condo that faces a portion of the center that developers have proposed to build up to 85 feet. “We’re right next to where this is happening and got completely

left out.”

Mason, and other nearby residents, said increasing building heights would bar their view of the Rocky Mountains, though Gerrity assured that it would not, based off its models.

Supporters speak up While many in attendance were opposed to the plans, business leaders and advocates for affordable housing said it was needed.

Tim Vandal, who owns the boutique store A Paris Street Market in Aspen Grove, said if the plan does not go forward, the center will continue to struggle.

“I think you’ve seen that in the numbers,” Vandal said. “We all know retail has changed, buying habits have changed. The redevelopment for the market may be a challenge, but I’m confident we can get through that … we could go anywhere we wanted to in this region.

We choose Littleton because we’re invested.”

Pat Dunahay, co-president of the Littleton Business Chamber, said the risks are “too high” to let Aspen Grove stay as it is.

“We have (outlets) there that we can’t risk losing,” Dunahay said. “I put a lot of faith and a lot of trust that (Gerrity) is on the pulse of cutting-edge stuff.”

Ann Roux, who lives in Littleton and is a member of the League of Women Voters for Arapahoe and Douglas counties, said she supported the plan but that it must ensure affordable housing.

“We believe that it’s the responsibility of a community to ensure that those who work in the community can also live in the community,” she said.

Destiny Bossert, a local and state government affairs manager for the Colorado Apartment Association, said as job tenures decrease among younger people, renting is in higher demand.

“Mixed-use development produces an opportunity to help sustain and grow businesses,” she said. “It is in the city’s best interest to ensure availability of all housing types at all different price points.”

Council will take up further discussion and consideration of the plan during a special meeting on Nov. 9.

Main Street through downtown Littleton was closed to traffic and converted into a street market Oct. 9 for the monthly “Second Saturdays” event, the final one of the season.

Purveyors of art, jewelry, pottery, clothing and vintage goods drew shoppers, who also enjoyed the fall sunshine, visited the street’s permanent stores, and sampled food and libations.

The Saturday event was part of the “Weekends on Main” promotion managed by the Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants Association and the Littleton Business Chamber.

Women still behind in breast cancer screenings Doctors warn cases are worse when symptoms are ignored

Just over two years after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, Suzi McCumber continues to stress the importance of regular screenings.

If McCumber had not gotten the recommended mammogram and treatment, her doctors said there is no way she would have survived more than a year.

McCumber, a Littleton-area resident, has remained positive throughout her treatment process.

In high spirits, she happily reported that after more than a year of chemotherapy and radiation, she has moved on to the final stages of treatment, which is taking a pill for a few years to keep the cancer from coming back.

“I will continue to take this pill and do whatever the doctors tell me to do,” said the 67-year-old. “I just can’t stress enough how important it is for women to continue getting those screenings and tests. Sometimes you just do not know a lump is there. Sometimes you cannot feel it.

I did not feel anything. The 3D mammogram found a mass all the way back in my pectoral muscle.”

With the nation coming through the second COVID wave caused by the delta variant, HealthOne Dr. Laura Hafertepen said the medical community’s concerns from last year are carrying over.

Because of the hesitancy to get screenings, Hafertepen said, when women are getting the original diagnosis the disease has already progressed to stages 2 or 3. With regular screenings, she said, doctors can catch cancer at stage 1 or zero.

Arapahoe boys take state golf title Warriors last achieved pinnacle 33 years ago

Arapahoe High School in Centennial has come close many times to winning a state golf championship.

The Warriors were second the past two seasons and third in the previous two campaigns.

Arapahoe’s golfers dominated for most of the regular season, and on Oct. 5 at the Colorado Springs County Club the team wrapped up its first state golf title since 1988.

The Warriors held a one-shot lead after the first day of competition but came in with a 216 during the final round to finish with 438 strokes to outdistance Greenwood Village’s Cherry Creek High School by 17 strokes. Creek finished second at 455. Highlands Ranch was third at 458.

“It feels really special,” said Arapahoe coach Harry Buckner.

“This is a special group of kids.

They challenged each other all year in all of our practices and competition.

“Thirty-three years ago is the last time we won a state championship. That’s a long time ago. We’ve been knocking on the door but it’s so hard to open because there are so many good teams.”

Arapahoe senior Will Kates didn’t have to wait 33 years to win his second state individual title championship. Kates, who captured the state championship in 2019, shot a final round of

1-under-par 70 and tied first-day leader Wesley Erling of Pine Creek for first place with 142 two-round totals.

Kates won a playoff on the second playoff hole with a seven-foot birdie putt to earn his second state championship.

“I kinda made some really good putts today and that kinda of kept me in early,” said Kates. “I built off that and kept going from there.”

And he made the biggest putt on the second extra hole of the playoff, which was the 524-yard, par 5 first hole.

“I had that exact same putt on the first this morning, so I hit it on my line and it went in,” Kates continued. “It’s pretty cool to win. If you told me my freshman year that I would win two state championships I wouldn’t have believed you.

“Winning state is just as cool as the individual, to be honest with you. My base goal this year was to get the team title.”

Kates was the leader but Max Zadvorny had a 1-over-par 72 and wound up in eighth place with a total of 149. Matthew Wilkinson and Grant Juergens each had final rounds of 74. Wilkinson came in tied for sixth at 147 and Juergens was ninth at 150.

Luke Cushman of Castle View High School in Castle Rock had a final-round 72 and came in tied for third place at 147, and Ryan Peragallo of Highlands Ranch tied with Juergens for ninth place.

Cherry Creek’s Jonathan Trigg had a 151 total to lead the Bruins’ charge into second place.

English was the spark plug for the Titans with three hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases as Legend downed nearby Chaparral, 3-0, on Oct. 4 to win the regular season Continental League softball championship.

“She is a good kid,” said Legend coach Kristen Shirk. “She definitely sets the tone for our team. She knows that. That puts more pressure on her at times but she was pretty loose (against Chaparral) and

set the tone. We do play to win banners for the school.

That’s a goal.”

English got three singles in four at-bats and her base running led to Legend’s first two runs, which staked them to the early lead which they held.

She led off the game with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on another wild pitch.

“Baserunning is my favorite part of the game,” said English. “I love catching people and when I’m on third I look for the pitch in the dirt or up high.”

In the third inning, English led off again with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and stole home to score the second run when the catcher was not sharp throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

A cut above the rest Meat cutting competition held in Highlands Ranch

Nearly 30 butchers from Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico gathered in Highlands Ranch for a chance to win $20,000 in the annual Slice on Ice Qualifier Competition, hosted by the Texas Roadhouse steakhouse chain.

The ice rink at the new South Suburban Sports Complex was turned into a makeshift meat locker on Oct. 4, as competitors were given a total of 40 pounds of beef to carve up during a one-hour competition.

Stephanie Keck, a Texas Roadhouse marketing coach, said it is exciting to get back to hosting the competitions in the area, given they were canceled due to the pandemic in 2020.

Keck said the Oct. 4 event in Highlands Ranch was a qualifier competition, which means the winner not only receives $20,000 but also earns to the right to go on and compete in the semi-finals. Winners of the semifinal events go on to compete in the 2021 national competition where the winner is crowned Meat Cutter of the Year.

The semi-finals and national competition will be held in Nashville in February.

“At Texas Roadhouse, our professional butchers hand-cut every steak in each restaurant,” said Mike Castaneda, Texas Roadhouse senior product coach. “Our meat-cutting challenge recognizes the significant contributions of our talented butchers and we’re proud to reward and honor these individuals through this national competition.”

With judges constantly watching through the hour, Clint Hacker, the competition emcee, said competitors are judged on width of the cuts of sirloin, filet and ribeye. They are

also judged on muscle-to-gristle ratio, marbling and technique, Hacker said.

Mark Gurger said he drove from Albuqurque to compete in the 2021 competition. While he measured the fat down the center of a cut of meat in preparation of the official start time, Gurger said he has competed several times because “it is really a lot of fun.”

Zuriel Rubio, a native of Mexico, said he currently works in a restaurant in Wyoming. He said he was excited to come to the Highlands Ranch competition, noting this is his sixth time competing in the Slice on Ice challenge.

“I come every year because it is not just about a competition,” Rubio said. “I get to see other techniques and learn from others. I think that is the best part.”

Texas Roadhouse officials said it is important to host the competition and constantly encourage consistency among meat cutters. In an average year, Texas Roadhouse butchers cut about $1 million worth of meat and spend between seven and eight hours per day cutting meat in a 35-degree walk-in cooler.

The National Meat Cutting Challenge is part of Texas Roadhouse’s Meat Hero Program, which was created in 2001 to recognize daily efforts of the company’s meat cutters, who hand-cut each steak served at each restaurant.

Since the first Texas Roadhouse opened in 1993, the chain has grown to more than 580 locations in 49 states, including several in metro Denver, and 22 locations in nine foreign countries.

Each pitcher allowed six hits and struck out 12 batters. Ponich lowered her earned run average to 1.57 with 157 strikeouts.

English’s three hits raised her batting average to .536 and the fact that it came in a championship game against a team from a rival school was important.

“I’ve faced her (Crosby) since I was 8,” recalled English. “She’s always been one of the top pitchers.

I was nervous but I had confidence and trusted myself.”

Chap stranded six of the eight runners it left on base in the final four innings.

“We had the tying run on but we have a lot of young kids,” said Chap coach Alan DiGiosio. “Cam’s

(Ponich) a pretty dominant pitcher so we were in it in the seventh so I’ll take that.

“I’ll put Crosby up against anybody. She’s had a heck of a year.

She was right there with Cam neck to neck. She gave up six hits and three in that leadoff spot and nothing more than singles. We were 3-13 last year and nobody picked us to do anything this year so to be 17-6 is pretty remarkable.”

Both Legend and Chap are expected to host two of the eight regional state qualifying tournaments to be held Oct. 16. Two teams from each regional will advance to the 16-team Class 5A state tournament, which will be held Oct. 22-23 at the Aurora Sports Park.

Hafertepen said women are slowly getting back on track with mammograms and pap smears, but the pandemic has caused a backlog.

“We are still trying to make up for a significant dip from last year,” she said.

Hafertepen said it is not just a problem doctors along the Front Range are seeing — the problem is nationwide.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, released the results of a survey in August where 2,003 women between the ages of 21 and 60 were surveyed.

According to the results, 90% of the women surveyed said when pandemic restrictions were lifted, they engaged in normal activities, such as visiting family and friends, dining out and shopping. Only 48% of women visited their doctors’ offices.

Hafertepen said besides the fear of COVID creating a hesitancy to get regular screenings, women traditionally tend to take care of everyone else and ignore their own needs.

Hafertepen said it is not uncommon for a woman to ignore a strange lump or discharge, which are both breast cancer symptoms that should be checked out immediately.

“When they finally come in about a mass or continued discharge, the results are worse,” she said. “If we had seen them six months ago when they first noticed the symptoms, the prognosis is much better.”

Hafertepen said a lot of women do not realize that they do not even need a doctor’s referral to get a regular screening mammogram every year. The only time a referral is required is if there are symptoms present.

“If you feel something or notice something, go get it checked out.

Call your doctor immediately,” Hafertepen said.

According to the American Cancer Society, women should start getting annual mammograms at age 40. Hafertepen said getting that first baseline reading at 40 is important for doctors to keep track of breast changes each year after.

That first breast exam can cause a lot of stress and anxiety, Hafertepen said.

“The anxiety is understandable, but you can truly get over that anxiety by just getting it done,” she said.

“If you do not do it, that anxiety will stay there lingering in the back of your mind.”

Women can call any of the variety of mammogram service providers along the metro area and make appointments. Centers such as Invision Sally Jobe even make getting a mammogram fit schedules for busy women. Appointments can be made on Saturdays and evenings.

Program connects Colorado to the world

In the past decade or so, Cheesman Park resident Laurie Hirschfeld Zeller has hosted members of Parliament from the United Kingdom, university presidents from Yemen, journalists from various African countries and women leaders from all over the world.

“These are the most interesting and rewarding interactions you can imagine,” Zeller said.

Sometimes these international guests stay in Zeller’s home for about a week and sometimes they come just for dinner.

“Breaking bread in one’s home is universally meaningful to all cultures,” Zeller said. “These opportunities have allowed me to show a personal side to the good experience these visitors have in Colorado, and helps them feel the goodwill that they take back to their home countries.”

Zeller is a founding member of WorldDenver and an emeritus board member. The international visitors she has hosted are people chosen to participate in the International Visitors’ Leadership Program, which is

sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

“Denver has so much to share with the world,” said John Krieger, executive director of WorldDenver, “and we make those connections.”

WorldDenver is a membershipbased nonprofit organization that connects Colorado to the world through international exchange, education, and personal interaction with international leaders, professionals and students, states its website.

“It matters that we feel connected to the greater world, here in land-locked Denver,” Zeller said. “WorldDenver is a community of members that supports the great programs and visiting delegations that help us understand the perspectives of our fellow humans — and helps those other humans understand us.”

WorldDenver is perhaps most known for facilitating the International Visitors’ Leadership Program, and for being Denver’s World Affairs Counsel. But, WorldDenver also has a Young Professional membership, and puts on a variety of other programming, such as an annual International Women’s Day event.

“The biggest issues we face are

borderless. They’ve got to be solved with global cooperation,” Krieger said. “Members come to WorldDenver to get that global connection.”

WorldDenver put on some virtual programming during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, but also turned attention to incorporating more educational programs for youth — something that had been on a priority list for quite some time, Krieger said.

The organization started to put together a plan to connect U.S. students ages 14-17 with students of the same age in the Middle East and North Africa — Iraq and Morocco, specifically.

Called the World Affairs Challenge Virtual Exchange, the new program is being implemented by WorldDenver, and supported by the Stevens Initiative.

The Stevens Initiative, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, “is an international effort to build global competence and career readiness skills for young people in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa by growing and enhancing the field of virtual exchange,” states a news release.

The youth will develop relationships and lifelong friendships with

their peers abroad, while also building empathy, developing leadership skills and learning about new topics.

“When young people can turn their ideas into real action, especially while working cross-culturally, it is immensely powerful and transformative,” Krieger said in a news release, “setting them on a path toward meaningful global citizenship and community involvement.”

Kelly Jones-Wagy is one of the local World Affairs Challenge Virtual Exchange facilitators/mentors.

“Students generally have incredible ideas,” Jones-Wagy said. “As a facilitator, my goal is just to help them to focus those ideas as they work with their counterparts through the virtual exchange.”

Jones-Wagy said she hopes the students learn from each other.

“Not just about their project, but also about all of the things that they have in common,” Jones-Wagy said.

“The more time we all spend getting to know people, the more we will be able to respect and care for others.”

City of Littleton Update: Unified Land Use Code Zoning Map It has been decades since the land use and zoning codes have been holistically updated with the last update occurring in 1976. After four years of community input and hard work, the City of Littleton is taking the final steps to consider the Unified Land Use Code (ULUC). This is a copy of the proposed zoning map under consideration.

A city council public hearing will be held October 19 to consider the Unified Land Use Code and the corresponding zoning map. All public hearings are an opportunity for citizens to share thoughts and input on the ULUC. Email cmoko@littletongov.org or visit envisionlittleton.org for more information.
