Rookie auction beats out previous year Nets $3,380 to bottom line By Pat Hill
phill@ourcoloradonews.com As a fundraising experiment, the first annual Virtual Marketplace for the 2012 Tweeds Holiday Home Tour signaled a green light and a “go” for 2013. “It was a decent rookie season,” said Cord Prettyman who, with Karolyn Smith, led the committee that launched the online auction. “We had a lot of action, a lot of interest.” Rookie or not, the online auction beat out all the previous years for bottom-line results. At $3,380, the net proceeds reflected an increase of $499 over 2011, which had been the best year to date. “We were blessed with having things like the cars and the baseballs which got us a lot of attention,” Prettyman said, referring to two of the star-studded donations. The baseballs were signed by 10 U.S. Presidents and the cars, donated anonymously, were a 1982 Corvette and a 2007 Pontiac Solstice. In a re-cap of the marketplace launch, Prettyman and Smith marvel at some of the super-duper deals scored by the winning bettors. For instance, one lucky bidder won what the two view as the best deal of
Karolyn Smith and Cord Prettyman consider the first Virtual Marketplace, an online auction fundraiser for the 2012 Tweeds Sounds of the Season Holiday Home Tour a success. Photo by Pat Hill the auction, two nights at the Edgewood Inn, the entire inn, five rooms and common areas, for $610, a$2,630 value. “That was a steal,” Prettyman said, as Smith added, “Ridiculous.” Savvy bidders scooped up other items to enhance their leisure time, among them, a two-night stay, including six meals and $40
in gambling chits, a $500 package for $203. The autographed guitar by Def Leppard went for $550, the value estimated as “priceless” by the committee. “The things that went the fastest were the `consumables,’” Prettyman said. Buoyed by success, the committee nonetheless plans to refine the process. “We
want our program to be faster, more userfriendly, with more local consumables,” Prettyman said. As it was, the bidders were chiefly in the Pikes Peak Region. “We were hoping to have a national presence and we should never have identified the bidder by name,” Prettyman said. As well, potential buyers expressed frustration over the $2 incremental bids. “We weren’t able to set the increments in $25 and weren’t able to mark the items `sold.’ Instead, the program just removed them from the site,” Smith said. This year’s home tour had a list of firsts, the first online auction and the first hometour website, at www.hht.org. As well, the event Dec. 1 and 2 was the best ever, with more than 800 people viewing the homes in Woodland Park. In spite of the stress and the unknowns, the committee is encouraged by the statistics that show 1,438 page views for the Virtual Marketplace from Nov. 16 to Dec. 9. Proceeds from the marketplace as well as the tour were donated to Teller Senior Coalition, Woodland Park Hockey Association and the Woodland Aquatic Project. “I think it’s accurate to say that we see the online auction as the future for fundraising through a marketplace versus a boutique setup,” Prettyman said.
County finding communications solutions Planning for floods in Waldo Canyon Fire burn scar By Norma Engelberg The offices of Teller County Waste sustained severe smoke damage from an arson fire in the wee hours of Jan. 1. Arson ushers in 2013 By Pat Hill
phill@ourcoloradonews.com Woodland Park Police arrested Tyler Scott Morland, 22, Jan. 1 at the scene of a fire in progress at Teller County Waste at 116 N. Center. According to Chief Bob Larson, the department expects to file four charges against Morland: 2nd degree burglary, a Class IV felony; criminal mischief, a felony; 4th degree arson, a Class II misdemeanor; and criminal trespass, a misdemeanor. The charges will be filed in the 4th Judicial District. At the time of his arrest, Mor-
land was intoxicated, Larson added. The chief credits the quick response of Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District for extinguishing the fire within minutes. According to police records, Bradley Blanchard (at Teller Cable) made the “911” call at 3:11 a.m. Jan.1 and fire and police arrived within minutes. “We extinguished the fire quickly,” said Fire Chief Tyler Lambert. “The key to saving the building was the 911 call. A few minutes longer, it would have been a different story.” The fire started on the upper

level of the two-story building; the contents, computers, phone system and files, were destroyed and the building itself sustained heavy smoke damage. Jay Baker, the owner of the waste company, received the call about 4 a.m. “The upstairs was trashed,” Baker said. As a result, Baker has moved the offices to the Woodland Professional Building. “We didn’t miss a beat,” he said. “We opened for business the next day; it was 36 hours from destruction to production.” Baker credits his son, Jayson Baker, who owns Peak Internet, for relocating the phone and internets systems as well as his staff for working on the New Year’s holiday to help get the company up and running. Cpl. Dena Currin and Office Greg Geiman, Woodland Park Police, and Teller County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Williams responded to the 911 call, along with a crew of four from NETCO. “It was a cold morning,” Lambert said.
nengelberg@ourcoloradonews. com Teller County started to make major investments in communications upgrades about a year and a half ago but problems remain. “Communications still aren’t working like they should,” said Steve Steed, director of the county’s Office of Emergency Management, at the county’s Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting on Jan. 2. “We’ve cut our ties with our former communications provider and we’re reaching out to new vendors. … We’re trying to find out why we’re not getting optimal performance.” He said that, so far, consultants think the problem is in the software. “We have all the right pieces; they just need to be programed properly,” he said. Successful upgrades will give the sheriff’s department better coverage in the mountains and will allow all emergency response agencies to communicate literally on the same frequency. Steed also announced that El Paso Teller E911 will be replacing back-up power systems in Teller County and consolidating all its local systems into a space being
constructed for that purpose in the Teller County Sheriff’s building. “It should take about 90 days to complete this upgrade and clean up a lot of old technology and wiring,” he said. Bill Mayfield, emergency services liaison for Memorial Hospital/University of Colorado Health in Colorado Springs, talked about the possibility of flood events in the Waldo Canyon Fire burn scar. He said a study by a committee in El Paso County dealing with medical support for flood events shows that for the next three to four years any time it rains more than 1 inch on the burn scar there is a possibility of 100,000 cubic feet of debris sliding into Ute Pass. This could close U.S. 24 for up to 72-hours at a time. “The first couple of years the debris could be small stuff like silt,” he said. “In year three and four the debris could be trees and large boulders. We need to be planning for this happening every spring and summer.” While most of the flood damage would be in El Paso County close to Manitou Springs, Teller County’s problem would be with access to medical care facilities in Colorado Springs. This lack of access could County continues on Page 5

CHA comments Colorado Medicaid Expansion Special to the Courier The Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) President and Chief Executive Officer Steven J. Summer made the following statement today in regard to Gov. John Hickenlooper’s decision to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA): CHA commends Gov. Hickenlooper for his decision to support Medicaid expansion under the provisions of the ACA. Strengthening and expanding Medicaid will lead to improved physical and economic health for all of Colorado. More than 161,000 Coloradans will now be eligible for health care coverage through Medicaid. That means thousands of Colorado families will have access to the primary and preventative care, early diagno-
ses and treatment they need in order to live healthier and higher quality lives. In Colorado, we know that expanding coverage reduces uncompensated care. In 2009, hospitals partnered with the business community, advocacy organizations, provider groups and the state to pass the Medicaid provider fee, which has already enabled more than 66,000 uninsured Coloradans to gain access to care. Since its inception, uncompensated care costs related to Medicaid and CICP programs have decreased by $214 million. Even with that reduction, hospitals still provide more than a billion dollars of uncompensated care annually. The provider fee has demonstrated that expanding coverage for the uninsured and increasing Medicaid provider payments leads to a reduction
in the cost of uncompensated care being shifted to insured patients and the business community. CHA embraces the opportunity to work in partnership with the Governor, his administration, lawmakers and the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing to identify opportunities within the state’s existing resources—including the provider fee—to fund the Medicaid expansion. Colorado hospitals take great pride in providing quality care for those who need it, regardless of their ability to pay. Expanding Medicaid will strengthen our ability and commitment to continue to care for patients in every corner of this state. Pikes Peak Regional Hospital is a member of the Association. About the Colorado Hospital Asso-
ciation The Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) represents 95 member hospitals and health systems throughout Colorado. CHA partners with its members to work towards health reform and performance improvement, and provides advocacy and representation at the state and federal level. Colorado hospitals and health systems are committed to providing coverage and access to safe, high-quality and affordable healthcare. In addition, Colorado hospitals have a tremendous impact on the state’s economic stability and growth, contributing to nearly every community across the state with more than 71,000 employees statewide. CC finishes Mt. Pisgah cemetery annexation Approves first reading of retail marijuana prohibition By Norma Engelberg
nengelberg@ourcoloradonews.com Cripple Creek’s cemetery is now inside its city limits. The land where Mt. Pisgah Cemetery is located belongs to the city but until the land was annexed by the Cripple Creek City Council at its Jan. 2 meeting, the cemetery was located in the county. The city conducted what is called a serial annexation, which means the four different pieces of cemetery land had to be annexed in a specific order to maintain continuity with city limits. Also, the city reappointed Annie Tobey, Cleo Delaney and Teresa Stitt to the five-member Mt. Pisgah Cemetery Board. Jeanne Harrington has been appointed as a board alternate although ordinarily the board doesn’t have alternates. Council also approved on first reading
an ordinance that adds a section on recreational marijuana to the city’s medical marijuana ordinance. The original ordinance prohibits all retail sales, commercial operations and manufacturing of medical marijuana products inside the Cripple Creek city limits. The new section extends the prohibition to the same kinds of operations for recreational marijuana. The ordinance can’t prohibit the growing of up to six marijuana plants by residents for personal use because this is allowed by the passage of Amendment 64 and can’t be prohibited by local governments. The Jan. 2 reading should have been the second reading of this ordinance but the Dec. 19 meeting was canceled by a snow storm. The new section won’t become effective until the second reading at the Jan. 16 meeting. One city resident pointed out that by

nengelberg@ourcoloradonews.com The elections are over but there is still some confusion about who will represent whom in the Colorado General Assembly when the 2013 legislative session starts on Jan. 9. The U.S. Congressional district map was affected by redistricting after the 2010 U.S. Census but there was little change in Congressional District 5 where Doug Lamborn remains the representative. However, redistricting has made big changes in the state senate and house district maps. For example, state Senate District 2 used to cover all of southeastern Colorado starting at Fremont County and was represented by Sen. Kevin Grantham (Senate District 2-R). Grantham still represents Fremont County but his district has moved north to include all of El Paso County outside of urban Colorado Springs, Teller, Park and Clear Creek counties. The district he used to represent is now District 35. People who live in northwest and northcentral El Paso County, including Palmer Lake, Monument, U.S. Air Force Academy and Black Forest are still represented by Sen. Kent Lambert (Senate District 9-R) and people in southern Douglas County, including Larkspur, are still represented by Sen. Mark Scheffel (Senate District 4-R). The state house of

representatives has also seen changes with redistricting. People living in Palmer Lake, on the Air Force Academy, Cascade, Chipita Park, Green Mountain Falls and other areas in El Paso County near the Teller County line are in House District 20 and are represented by Republican Bob Gardner. New House District 19, which includes most of Monument, Woodmoor, Black Forest, Peyton, Hanover and points east to the Elbert and Lincoln county lines, is represented by Republican Amy Stephens. House District 18, which includes Manitou Springs and the western edge of Colorado Springs, is represented by Democrat Pete Lee. All of Teller County is now in new House District 39 along with rural parts of Douglas County, including Larkspur and Westcreek. Republican Polly Lawrence won the new seat in the Nov. 6 election. People living in Park, Chaffee, Fremont and Custer counties are living in House District 60 and are represented by Republican James Wilson. Once the 2013 legislative session is underway, constituents will be able to contact all state representatives and senators through directories at www.leg.state.co.us. As of the time of this writing, the state website had not been updated with new district information but redistricting maps and information are available at http:// w w w. c o l o ra d o. g ov / c s / Satellite/CGA-ReDistrict/ CBON/1251581769173.

nengelberg@ourcoloradonews.com The city of Cripple Creek started working on changing its municipal water service over to a metered-water system in 1998 and has spent more than $1.6 million to make the switch. That is all behind them now as workers installed the last of the meters for active water accounts on Jan. 2. City water/wastewater manager Jim Blasing said there will probably be
a month,” he said. “But we had a few that were using a lot more water and one who was using 180,000 gallons a month. These heavy water users were paying the same $15 fee everybody else was paying and being subsidized by everybody else.” Conservation was another reason high on Blasing’s list. It’s difficult for people to see how much water is being wasted when they don’t know how much water they’re using, he said. Conserving water means that the city might also have more water to sell to outside businesses such as the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Water rates continues on Page 5

the disease, Bullard hopes to provide help for victims who are without family support. “We were blessed that my dad was such a fighter for my mom but not everyone has that,” she said. “Kids my age are lucky if their parents are still married, let alone having their dad there every second of the day.” With the escalating costs of health care in America, suffering a debilitating disease is expensive for the victim as well as the family. “How do you tell someone that after the loved one dies the survivor will have thousands of dollars’ worth of debt? It’s the reality of an emotional situation,” she said. “You have to figure out how to live.” To get the fundraising ball rolling, Mike, Howie and Diane Schommer, of Schommer Construction, have kicked in the first $600. “I want to start out with families affected by melanoma. I really hope I can help lots of people - it might be 20 years from now but that’s what I’m hoping.” Bullard and her father Ron and siblings Justine (her twin sister), Courtney (Smith) and Travis, plan to launch the foundation with a festival and fun run May 11 at the family ranch, the Triple B in Woodland Park. “Even if you don’t like to run, you can bring the kids, do horseback rides and things like that,” she said. “It’ll be cool; I think mom would like it.” For information, call Bullard at 331-5020.

We had a normal perfect life, so it was a huge shock to us.” Jackie Bullard died Thanksgiving weekend. Her suffering affected the entire family while, at the same time, highlighted the devotion of the elder Bullards, who were childhood sweethearts. “My dad never left her side, never ever,” she said. “It made me realize that we were kind of lucky. I just want to help individual families because there are so many who deserve it.” In addition to raising awareness about

When it comes to rates, at a future regular council meeting city staff will be asking council to approve a rate of $15 for 0-8,000 gallons of usage and $2.85 per 1,000 gallons over 8,000. Plus, they would like the city to reinstate a $5 capital improvement project fee that was dropped by a previous council back in the late 1990s. If approved by ordinance, this would mean the average water user would be charged $20 a month and the city would add an additional $90,500 to its water revenue. Blasing offered alternative rate recommendations but, with the exception of Councilmember Steven Zoellner who wanted the $15 for up to 10,000-gallon rate, council said they would likely approve the recommended rate. It will take at least two regular meetings to pass a water rate ordinance so it is likely that rates would go into effect starting in April. Changes in sewer rates will be discussed at a later date.

“Struggles that each person goes through regarding their health are related to the life they live,” he said. Over the past 20 years of hosting professional training seminars, the Wellbrocks have helped people whose struggles have included cancer, trauma, weight loss, weight gain or abuse, for instance. “Everyone has a story as to why it’s been a challenge to take care of themselves,” he said The Wellbrocks’ program bridges the gap between the physical and the intrinsic. “Not only does it give the person the physical strategy of proper nutrition, cardiovascular, exercise and strength training, it also covers the mental, spiritual and emotional aspect of a person’s health,” he said. Silesia added, “We redefine health and fitness by removing the guilt, whether it’s weight loss or whatever.” In lives that included much personal suf-
fering, the Wellbrocks feel qualified to help others develop the courage to change. “Pain has a tendency to latch itself on to someone and the next thing you know they are identifying their whole day by pain,” Brian said. “So how can you just give them physical actions without helping them learn mentally and spiritually to detach from that pain and take hold of a higher strength and a higher power?” The Wellbrocks are both fitness experts; he has degrees in corporate wellness and is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as TRX Sports-Medicine. Much to accomplish for legislators this session Coloradans are less than a week from the first regular session of the 69th General Assembly. When our state lawmakers convene Jan. 9 in Denver, they will go to work in a Capitol with some new faces in new places and a balance of power that has shifted to the left. After the November election, Democrats gained control of both chambers of the state Legislature, to go with a Democratic governor in John Hickenlooper. Both the House and Senate have new leadership. Mark Ferrandino, D-Denver, replaces Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, as House speaker. John Morse, D-El Paso County, takes over for term-limited Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, as Senate president. With the Democrats’ new power comes
OUR VIEW a new and great responsibility. Namely, to think of their constituents first, even those who may not have voted for them. It is important to note that of Colorado’s active voters, Republicans slightly outnumber Democrats — 924,076 to 891,004, as of Dec. 1. The ranks of active unaffiliated voters only slightly trails the Dems’ numbers. Given that, it would be wise for lawmakers to vigorously work toward bipartisan solutions that the people of this state will embrace.
But will that happen? At a recent gathering with reporters and editors from many of the state’s media outlets, Morse said the voters’ decision to empower his party means the “middle class is coming back.” House Minority Leader Mark Waller, R-El Paso County, quickly took exception to what he apparently felt was a jab at the GOP. “We do care about the middle class and bipartisan solutions,” Waller said. While that’s a fairly typical exchange across party lines, let’s hope it wasn’t a sign of bickering to come. Instead, let’s hope they are both right, that both parties will show commitment to the middle class and a focus on bipartisan problem-solving. With a passel of weighty issues awaiting them, lawmakers will be best served by pro-
ceeding with a spirit of cooperation. In the coming months, state legislators could be faced with decisions on: • Setting standards for marijuana use and driving. • Deciding whether to repeal the death penalty. • Stricter gun-control measures. • Civil unions, an issue that appeared headed for passage in 2012 before last-minute maneuvering prevented a vote. • Increased school safety measures. These are among issues important to Coloradans, and we hope legislators will devote the effort and thought needed to come up with common-sense solutions. Voters have put their faith in our lawmakers, and they need to take that responsibility seriously.
Broncos and politics: My own way of sticking it to the man When I was much younger — let’s say, for illustrative purposes, in one of the last two years of high school — I often had some sort of scheme or small-time con working. Usually, it was minor, with no real victims (except perhaps myself and a few of my accomplices) and was perpetrated only as a method to, and within the intention of, specifically sticking it to The Man. Born of such a scheme was a trip to Denver one spring, paid for (at least in part) by your hard-earned tax dollars. Forgive me, as I don’t remember all the specific details, but here are the generalities of the story. Despite my philosophical aversion to pork-barrel politics, or perhaps to illustrate a point, I discovered that certain amounts of potential funding was available under the guise of `career exploration’ and `opportunity development’ funds for students of my particular age. I applied, and subsequently was approved for a grant from Southwest Board of Co-operative Services (B.O.C.S.) to go and visit the Broncos offseason training facilities in Denver. Understand, of course, that no one in the right mind would picture my career path on a trajectory to becoming a professional football player. However, quite
cleverly I believe, I deflected potential nay saying and outright dismissal of my plan by choosing the potential vocation of sports medicine and `professional trainer’ for a shadow program. B.O.C.S. generously sprung several hundred dollars for a trip up to the city so that I could explore the opportunity and the possibility that I might one day choose a career in sports medicine. Originally, with the initial award of the grant, two other students from Mancos, Mark and John Ott, were also to go to the training facility with me. But a last-minute schedule conflict prevented them from attending, and for a time, I thought the gig was up for me as well. But because the money had already been allocated and a genuine interest in doing right for the good, young stu-

dents, soon to be cast out in the cold, cruel world, it was suggested that I ask a couple of friends, perhaps from good old DHS, Home of the Bears, to join me on my journey. I obliged of course, choosing Scott Weinmaster and James Biard to accompany me instead. It was at precisely at that point, the journey veered dangerously away from an “educational experience” and more towards a fearful and loathsome junket to the capitol city with a fist full of taxpayer’s dollars. We borrowed a car belonging, I think to James’ mom or his grandfather, but naturally Scott and I would not, under any circumstances, allow James to drive. To do so would have been suicide. Seven or eight hours on icy roads with the Commodores and Foghat alternately blaring out “Slow Ride” and “Just to be Close” as we lumbered over Wolf Creek, through the San Luis Valley, up the gun barrel and into the city. When in Denver, we stayed at Weinmaster’s house, but only briefly. We had things to do and people to see. I remember something about Figaro’s Pizza, and there may have been beer involved, though I hope not at the taxpayer’s expense.
We did, in the interest of education, make it to our prescribed appointment at the Broncos training facility. It being the off season, there was not a lot of the big names hanging out but it was fun for us backwards country hicks to get to see grid stars like Rob Lytle, Randy Gradishar, Joe Rizzo and Roland Hooks (Hooks was from the Buffalo Bills, as the professional training facilities were open to other teams through reciprocal agreements) in their various stages of repair. I remember thinking, that Rizzo had tree trunks for legs, but Lytle (at 6’1”, 196 pounds) seemed to be almost a regularsized cat. Lytle spent seven seasons with the Broncos and scored their only touchdown in Super Bowl XII -- Back in the days of Red Miller. Rizzo and Gradishar also played in Super Bowl XII as part of the Orange Crush Defense. Gradishar was with the Broncos for 10 seasons and still sells cars for Phil Long dealerships in Colorado. Just so you know, in the true spirit of politics, that trip was over 30 years ago and you taxpayers are never getting your money back. My version, I guess, of sticking it to The Man.
Americans are saving too much labor For the gadget-happy among us, the 21st century is a great time to be alive. Of course, if we’re not careful all these gadgets will be the death of us. We already don’t have to move from our couches to turn on the TV or change the channel and with remotes we can turn on lights in distant parts of our homes. With computers we can turn them on and off from a motel room in the next state. We seem to have an obsession for “laborsaving devices” but saving all that labor is taking its toll on our health, our budgets and our environment. Here is just one example, laundering clothes. Let’s just consider modern washers and dryers with all their bells and whistles as really big gadgets. I can still remember washing clothes in a wringer wash machine, which was probably a lot more labor saving than the washboard and tubs my grandmother and great-grandmother used. Wash day was Saturday when Mom could count on having me around to help. My brothers didn’t do laundry; Dad said laundry was “women’s work.” (He did apologize for that several years later. Gee, thanks Dad!) Until I was in my early teens, Mom didn’t let me anywhere near the dangerous wringers but I was intimately familiar with clotheslines. In our ringer-washer days we had just enough clothes, along with one or two extra outfits for special occasions, and bedding to last the week between washings. If you’ve ever read the Laura Ingalls Wilder “Little House” books you know that Laura had only one or two weekday dresses and the same number of Sunday-go-to-meeting dresses. When we bought the automatic washer and dryer, the number of our outfits prolifer-
ated. Now my closets are full to bursting and, of course, I still have nothing to wear. Having so many outfits means I have to work harder to pay for them and I do laundry more often; there’s no such thing as wearing the same blouse twice even if I didn’t spill anything on it (a rare occasion indeed and something to write home about). More clothes means growing more cotton, shearing more sheep, drilling for more oil, more spinning, weaving and sewing and using more power, more water, more chemicals and more transportation. Now that laundering clothing has become easier, we’re not lugging baskets full of wet, heavy clothes out to the clotheslines. We’re saving time and labor but we’ve lost one more of the many activities our bodies think of as “exercise.” Every time we embrace a new labor-saving device or gadget we’re just making it that much easier for our bodies to get fatter. And we’re spending more money at the gym and on diets to counteract our not-soactive lifestyles. Maybe we should think about that the next time we’re looking the next new labor-saving device and remember the difference between what we need and what we want.

such a thing as a silent heart attack even exists but according to an ABC News report of a new JAMA study, for every heart attack that exhibits the classical symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath and nausea, almost two more asymptomatic silent heart attacks fly under the radar. The JAMA study of 936 elderly men and women in Iceland found that 17 percent had heart damage from an unrecognized heart attack. This compares to less than 10 percent of the research subjects having had a heart attack with recognizable symptoms. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in America accounting for 1 of every
4 deaths every year. And of those who survive a heart attack, silent or otherwise, half die within five years of their cardiac event. The website www. silentheartattack.org warns that twice as many people die from a silent heart attack than those who suffer a myocardial infraction with chest pain. The main reason sighted is that in the case of an asymptomatic cardiac event, the person is not aware of the infarction wasting valuable time in seeking treatment resulting in permanent damage to the heart. With the absence of chest pain, the most common symptoms of a silent heart attack are shortness of breath and extreme fatigue. Oddly enough, many heart attack victims report a feeling of overwhelming doom just before the attack. There is no opportunity to restore heart muscle damaged in a silent heart attack but there is the opportunity to prevent a second heart attack. “If the damage is mild, there are a

Chisholm leaves a trail of defeated opponents Woodland Park senior’s Judo skills transfer to wrestling mat By Danny Summers
sports@ourcoloradonews.com MANITOU SPRINGS - For having never wrestled until a few months ago, Thomas Chisholm is turning out to be a pretty solid grappler. The Woodland Park High School senior improved to 17-0 this season after dominating all five of his opponents at the Jan. 5 Westside Tournament. The sixschool event was held at Manitou Springs High School and included Discovery Canyon, Peyton, St. Mary’s, Widefield and Manitou Springs. “I definitely respect this sport,” Chisholm said. “There are a lot of tough kids.” Three of Chisholm’s matches last Saturday lasted less than a minute. In fact, he pinned all of his opponents; something that has become habit this season. “I’d rather pin a guy and get it over quicker,” he said. Chisholm is enjoying monumental success with relatively little experience. But to be fair, he
didn’t just fall off the turnip truck and onto a mat. “I’ve spent the last six years doing Judo; pretty much year round,” Chisholm said. “Some of the same techniques used in Judo can be used in wrestling.” Techniques such as take downs and exposing an opponent’s weaknesses during a match have contributed greatly to Chisholm’s success.” “For any kid, regardless of what you did as a sport, to be 17-0 is pretty amazing,” said Woodland Park coach Keith Sieracki, who was among the best Greco-Roman wrestlers in the world for nearly two decades. “Not only does he have great ability as a wrestler, but he has great leadership skills. He’s real humble and a hard worker.” Chisholm is also not your runof-the-mill judo fighter. He was a gold medalist at the 2011 Junior Olympics. He trains at Suzuran Dojo in Divide under the direction of Jeff Laurell. “There are a lot of similarities between Judo and wrestling,” Chisholm said. “The biggest difference is that there’s a lot more conditioning in wrestling. “It’s definitely better than I thought it would be. It’s definitely fun. It’s a blast.”
Woodland Park senior Thomas Chisholm is off to a 17-0 start in his first year as a wrestler. Photo by Danny Summers It hasn’t taken long for Chisholm’s Woodland Park teammates to notice that the newest member of the team is equipped with a pretty good skill set. “He’s got great awareness,” Woodland Park senior heavyweight Caelan Garner said of Chisholm. “Now that he’s starting to learn stuff he’ll be real good.”
Chisholm often practices with Garner, despite giving away 30 to 40 pounds. Chisholm also works with fellow 160-pounder Jon-Jon Hinton and 170-pounder Josh Smith. “He has really good balance,” Hinton said of Chisholm. “He’s strong. He’s mellow. He’s calm. He’s focused.”
Chisholm’s biggest challenge to date will be this weekend when Woodland Park competes in the 12-school Legend tournament in Parker. Also at the tournament will be Pine Creek, Rock Canyon, Mesa Ridge, Horizon, Lewis-Palmer, Vista Ridge, Overland, Thunderridge, Kennedy and Mead. “Thomas will run into some kids this weekend who will give him a test,” Sieracki said. “He’ll become battle-hardened. He’ll get valuable experience.” Chisholm just might be Woodland Park’s best all-around male athlete. He played soccer for the first time last fall and earned a starting forward spot on the school’s team. “I only did soccer for the conditioning, but I really liked it,” Chisholm said. Despite his wrestling success, Chisholm maintains a humble approach as he continues in his quest for a state championship and a college scholarship. “I think better opportunities will present themselves as the season goes along,” Chisholm said. “I never thought about doing wrestling in college, but I think it’s something I might like to do.” As for his future in judo, Chisholm plans on pursuing more success at the national stage.
Johnson goes the distance for his sport
Woodland Park senior takes the ice for Coronado s the
y an-By Danny Summers arolssports@ourcoloradonews.com being hap- WOODLAND PARK - Five to six days sten;a week, Cody Johnson gets in his car and drives 22 miles to World Arena for hockey ghts; practice or a game. But the Woodland Park senior does not represent his own school in the sport. He plays for the Coronado Cougars because Woodland Park does not field a team. “It’s a bummer we couldn’t get a high school team going up here,” Johnson said. “But I play hockey for Coronado and that’s my team.” Johnson is in his third season with Coronado and is among the top scorers in the Colorado Springs area. His 11 points (eight goals and three assists) are tops on the team. “Cody’s a very good shooter and a very good stick handler,” said first-year Cougars coach Greg Lehmann. “He’s not a super vocal guy, but he brings it every game.” Johnson is a co-captain along with fellow seniors Max Lovato and Tucker Bloom. Johnson also centers the first line with forwards Dominic Steel and Garrett Oarth. “We’ve been skating together for a long time,” said Steel, who leads the team in assists with eight. “When I have the puck I’m always looking for Cody or Garrett. “Cody has really god fundamentals and he’s really smart when he’s on the ice. He makes the right play 99 percent of the time.”
Interestingly, nearly one-third of Coronado’s team attends schools other than Coronado. Steel and Oarth are students at Falcon (25 miles from World Arena). Johnson, Steel and Oarth grew up playing on the same club teams in Colorado Springs, so they decided to stay together in high school. “We always seem to know where each other are,” said Oarth, who has four goals and four assists. “Cody stepped up this year because he’s a leader of the team. He’s taken the reigns.” Johnson is a three-year starter (he played club as a freshman), but has really come into his own this season. He’s scored two goals in a game three times and has been held scoreless just twice. The Cougars, however, are 1-6 (0-3 in the Peak Conference), with their lone victory coming in the season opener against Liberty, 7-3. “Last year (2011-12) we thought we were going to be better than we were,” Johnson said. “We had a lot of five-goal losses. “But this year most of our games have been close. We could have a better record, but we just haven’t played a full three periods of hockey. If we do that I think we can pull out a few wins.” Johnson and the Cougars played a full three periods of hockey on Jan. 5, battling back from a 5-1 deficit against Palmer to tie the game at 5-5 and force overtime. But the Terrors scored in the first overtime stanza. Johnson finished with a goal and assist. “We’re starting to get good chemistry,” Johnson said. “We’re hitting it on a dime this year.” Coronado’s next game is Saturday
against Doherty at World Arena. On Jan. 23, the Cougars host Air Academy at Sertich Ice Arena with proceeds from the game going to help the Colorado Springs firefighters who fought the Waldo Canyon blaze last summer. Johnson is not the only Woodland Park student playing hockey. Sophomore de-
fenseman Jake Neil plays for Coronado and sees action in every game. Senior Tyler Elwell is a defenseman for Palmer. Sophomore Jeremy Hamerquist is a goalkeeper for Cheyenne Mountain. “We all hang out with each other and we’re all best friends in school,” Johnson said. “We just play on different teams.”

It’s all about the chemistry Environmental health officer uses science to keep residents safe By Norma Engelberg
nengelberg@ourcoloradonews. com Teller County’s environmental health officer Aaron Doussett has a lot of letters after his name but what they mean is that he is ready to help keep county residents safe. The “M.S.” means Doussett has a master’s degree in chemistry; he also has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, both from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. The “REHS” means he is a Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian through the National Environmental Health Association. “The position of environmen-
tal health officer requires a science background and chemistry fits the bill perfectly,” he said. “We do a lot of pathogenic and zoonotic investigation.” Both “pathogenic” and “zoonotic” refer to diseases but zoonotic refers specifically to diseases borne by animal and insect vectors such as Aaron Doussett plague from rodents and their fleas and rabies from bats and other infected mammals. The Teller County Environmental Health Office not only tracks diseases but it is also in charge of inspecting more than 180 retail restaurants, schools, child care facilities and camps to make sure they are clean, well run and safe from food-borne and other pathogens, His office also issues septic system permits.
“We handle all kinds of environmental issues from swimming pools to meth labs to trash dumping,” Doussett said. “We work in concert with code enforcement officers.” His office doesn’t conduct water quality testing but it does hand out kits that people can take to a waterquality testing lab in El Paso County, he said. Of course, when he says “we,” he means himself. County budget cuts have turned the environmental health office into a one-man show. Doussett was the county’s assistant environmental health officer from 2004-2007. He moved on to the state environmental health office and then came back to the county last July. He said a lot of his job is educational but also a bit reactionary, reacting to events after they happen but there are ways the public can help him do his job.

Environmental: Call about critters, septic systems Environmental continued from Page 15
“For example, when people have a bat in their home their first reaction is to shoo it away,” he said. “If you have a bat in your home, don’t let it go; call us. We’ll need to test it for rabies. It also helps if you have your cats and dogs vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a big concern for us because it’s deadly and there is no cure.” Another way to help is for homeowners to take good care of their septic system.
“There are several different kinds of systems and they each take different care,” he said. “If you don’t know how to care for your system, call me. In fact call me if you have any kind of environmental question. If I don’t know the answer, I can refer you to someone who does. After working at state I have a lot of phone numbers.” Doussett can be reached at 719-6865415 or at doussetta@co.teller.co.us.
