After a day and a half of being threatened with arrest unless he transferred thousands of dollars, Brian Orr was out of money and believed he was going to jail.

It was only after Orr sent $17,500 and as he was sitting in the parking lot of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office that the alleged deputy on the other end revealed the scam.

“Right when I was ready to give up he says ‘alright Brian, how’d we do, one out of ten or ten out of ten’ and I knew right then,” Orr said.

On Nov. 29, Orr received a call from a local phone number and the caller claimed to be a Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputy. Orr said he was lulled into a false sense of security because the scammer took steps to seem legitimate and knew several details about him.

The caller referenced Orr’s loan information from the Personal Paycheck Protection program, as well as his address, veteran status and social security number. They told Orr he needed to transfer money because of an issue with Orr’s PPP loan or else he’d have a warrant out for his arrest and face jail time.

“He had a stern professionalism,” Orr said. “All my safeties were off because I was focused on staying out of jail.”

The caller said the money served as a “pre-emptive” bond for Orr and would be refunded to him once the issue with his loan was sorted. Orr sent an initial payment of $3,000, but the scammer called back saying it wasn’t enough and Orr needed to send more.

“I was filled with terror and panic, on the edge of tears for most of the time I Brian Orr poses with his son at Red Rocks. Orr was scammed out of $17,500 when was on the phone,” he said.

Thinking back, Orr said he wishes he someone impersonated a Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputy and called him seeking money. Orr hopes to warn others not to fall for the fraud.

County water board hosts first meeting

Water lawyers, current and former elected officials, and people who serve on the local districts that supply water to many Douglas County homes came together for the first time as a new body that is expected to help shape the future of water supply in a continually growing county.

Although the new arm of county government — called the Douglas County Water Commission — will focus on water issues across the county, several members placed an eye especially on rural areas.

“I’m immediately most interested in getting water and having contingency plans for the 20% of the county who is not served by a water district or served by a small

one,” Harold Smethills, a member of the new group, said at the Dec. 11 meeting at a county building in Castle Rock.

Ensuring a lasting water supply wasn’t the only topic on the new group’s minds — so was water safety. The conversation touched on potential threats to health in Douglas County, including the presence of radium, a contaminant linked to the risk of cancer, which has a history in the rural community of Louviers.

“How are we going to supply water to the residents that are coming into Douglas County? How are we going to give them safe water as well?” said Roger Hudson, a Castle Pines city councilmember who also sits on the new group.

The cost of the new group’s work — expected to produce a long-term

water plan for Douglas County — also came up at the meeting.

The water commission meets next at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. For now, here’s a look at the group’s first meeting and early developments.

A well-known name

The presence of Sean Tonner in the water commission process has attracted media attention, raising the question of whether a controversial water supply proposal may rise again in Douglas County.

Tonner has said he worked for former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and served under Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, saying he is well positioned to understand water issues.

“I understand the political part of the water situation,” Tonner, whom the county also appointed to the water commission, said at the Dec. 11 meeting.

The forming of the new group comes against the backdrop of a proposal to pump about 22,000 acre-feet of water per year to Douglas County from the San Luis Valley in the southern part of the state.

An acre-foot is the equivalent of a one-foot-deep pool about the size of a football field.

Renewable Water Resources, often called RWR, is the private company that proposed the project.

Tonner is one of the principals of RWR. Last year, county leaders Abe Laydon and Lora Thomas joined together in deciding not to move forward with that project, while county leader George Teal has continued to support it.

County Commissioner Lora Thomas has expressed concern about how much the water commission will cost taxpayers, while others have generally said the cost would be worth it to address the county’s water future.

Tricia Bernhardt, another member of the group, noted that developing a long-term water plan is a large undertaking and asked whether the commission could ap-

prove money to pay for a consultant to help with the process. County staff indicated they could request to do so.

Tonner raised the idea of “having independent financial advisers to look at bonding capabilities.”

Who county picked to serve

Douglas County staff had previously told Colorado Community Media that more than 50 people applied to serve on the water commission. Staff clarified in mid-November that the total number of applicants for the water commission is 50.

The county had mistakenly counted a few applications submitted for Douglas County Open Space Advisory Committee seats as part of that earlier total, according to staff.

D.R. Horton Inks Deal to Build Homes With OSB Made From Grass, not Lumber

My June 1 column featured a startup called Plantd in North Carolina which invented an alternative to standard OSB boards made from lumber with ones made from fast-growing grass. Their product was developed in cooperation with D.R. Horton, a major U.S. builder of new homes, who helped get the product approved and certified as a building material.

Within a month after my article, Horton ordered 250,000 of the panels to use in building 1,000 production homes, and it was announced that Plantd’s first automated machine for producing the panels would be in production by year’s end and that the 1,000 homes would begin construction in 2024.

OSB is the sheathing that is used on the exterior walls of all “stickbuilt” homes, as well as on subfloors and as roof sheathing.

Although I don’t know this as a fact, I suspect that the sheer weight and volume of OSB panels equals or exceeds that of the 2x4s, 2x6s and the joists and trusses to which it is attached.

Using Plantd’s panels as a replacement for wood-based OSB has huge ramifications on the preservation of forests, the absorption of carbon dioxide and the fight against climate change.

Guest Column: Learn About Title Companies It’s easy to get information overload when selling your house, but what if you don’t get all the information you need from your real estate broker? Besides getting top dollar for your home, what about saving money and better protecting your real estate closing by shopping your title insurance & closing services? The Denver Metro Association of Realtors reports the median price of a single-family home sold in November was $625K. The costs for title insurance and closing services for a $625K home ranges from $1,247 up to $2,563, a difference of $1,316.

Title companies are regulated by the Colorado Division of Insurance, which encourages consumers to shop their title insurance and closing services.

Sellers shouldn’t assume that their listing agent has shopped and compared their recommended title company, as the Division of Real Estate that licenses and regulates real estate brokers doesn’t require brokers to do so. Typically, most brokers just recommend their favorite title company, regardless of the costs to you.

While title insurance may be somewhat unfamiliar to sellers, it’s important to note the title policies and coverages are identical among all Colorado title companies, and that the title policy benefits the buyer and not the seller. More than likely, your listing agent did not mention this to you.

Also, did your broker recommend getting a seller’s “Closing Protection Letter” (CPL) which provides additional protections for your money and the closing process? Again, the Division of Real Estate doesn’t require brokers to inform you of such information.

It is the mitigation of climate change that motivated the company’s founders to develop their unique product. At the top of their lengthy home page is this goal: “Carbon negative materials for every new home and building on earth.” Scroll down, and you find this statement: “We envision a world that stands in balance with nature—a world built from grass… A world where buildings no longer cause climate change but are central to the solution. Where they are stronger, more durable, and more affordable. And where their walls and structures lock away vast amounts of carbon dioxide pulled from the atmosphere.”

You have probably heard of “carbon sequestration,” the removing of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it somewhere — typically underground.

The oceans also sequester carbon, which has become a problem, endangering ocean life and disrupting the pH balance of ocean water.

Plants are among the biggest sequesters of carbon dioxide because it’s their primary food. You’ve heard the Amazon rainforest described as “the earth’s lungs,” although it functions in the opposite manner, absorbing carbon monoxide and emitting oxygen.

Trees sequester carbon until they are burned, and building materials made from lumber sustain that sequestration.

But trees take a long time to grow, mak-

ing their absorption of carbon dioxide less efficient than the propriety grass developed by Plantd, which can reach 20 feet in height in a single growing season as shown in the photo at left. The company claims that 14,000 acres of grass plantations can produce as much material as 400,000 acres of managed timber lands. (Also, the grass is perennial, unlike trees, so it doesn’t need to be replanted after harvesting.)

Another feature of the North Carolina company is that it operates out of a onetime tobacco factory and has hired tobacco farmers who had been put out of work when the tobacco factory closed to grow the grass for their factory.

The company’s website claims that their product is stronger, lighter, more moisture resistant, carbon negative, and will cost the same as regular OSB. Plantd’s panels have just two ingredients: the perennial grass plus a small amount of resin (with the formaldehyde removed before it reaches Plantd’s factory). This creates a low-VOC product with fewer chemical additives compared to other products, according to Plantd.

I have written about many technological developments in home construction over the years, but this product has me more excited than all of them put together. I can’t wait to see the first homes in our metro area being built with this product.

School board discusses parent engagement policy

Douglas County School District’s accountability committee is recommending the board repeal changes to the parent engagement policy that added a parents’ rights section and language preventing “compelled speech.”

At the Dec. 12 meeting, members of the District Accountability Committee shared proposed changes to the parent engagement policy that would remove controversial language that some board members and parents worried would put transgender students at risk.

ers, reiterated parents’ ability to optout of curriculum and mandated disclosure of information regarding health, identity and education.

At the time the changes were made, Peterson said the language around compelled speech could allow for misgendering of trans students.

However, at the Dec. 12 meeting, Superintendent Erin Kane said staff were interpreting the policy to mean a student wouldn’t be compelled to provide their pronouns, not that misgendering would be tolerated.

School board sets plan to fill vacancy

The Douglas County School Board is accepting applications to fill the seat vacated by former president Mike Peterson who resigned on Nov. 30.

The board unanimously accepted Peterson’s official resignation on Dec. 12 and laid out a process to fill the District B spot. District B covers a large portion of western Douglas County, including Roxborough, Larkspur and part of Castle Rock.

The application period will close at noon on Jan. 5. Interviews will take place on Jan. 11. Finalists will be interviewed again on Jan. 23.

To be eligible for the spot, candidates must be at least 18, live in District B and have resided there for at least a year. As per state law, the candidate cannot have a convic-

tion for sexual offenses involving minors.

The candidate who receives a majority vote will serve the remaining two years of Peterson’s term. If no candidate gets a majority vote, board president Christy Williams will appoint someone.

Peterson resigned his seat earlier this month, citing plans to move out of state for personal reasons.

Board members Becky Myers and Kaylee Winegar thanked Peterson for his contributions to the district and dedication to students and staff.

“He never floundered in how hard he worked to do what was right for this district and the kids,” Winegar said. “He’ll be missed so much.”

County, CSU offer teacher development opportunities

The Douglas County School District is partnering with Colorado State University Global to offer educators professional development opportunities and discounted education.

The partnership will support funding for 18 teachers to receive continuing education and 14 educators to study for principal licensure. All district employees will also get a discounted tuition rate for CSU Global, an online campus.

“DCSD is incredibly excited about this amazing partnership with CSU Global, as it will provide our dedicated staff an opportunity for continued growth for themselves with a direct benefit for our students,” Dan McMinimee, district

Executive Director for Pathways, Choice and Alternative Education, said in a statement. “Our concurrent enrollment program in DCSD is far and away the best program in Colorado. This partnership will ensure us a continuing pipeline of highly trained staff.”

Teachers selected for the continuing education opportunity will learn how to effectively teach dual and concurrent enrollment courses, which allow students to receive college credits in high school. The principal licensure program will teach educators about effective

school leadership.

Credits earned through either the continuing education or licensure programs can be applied to a master’s degree for teaching and learning.

“By investing in educators’ professional development, we are supporting their individual growth, while also contributing to the overall excellence of education in Douglas County and Colorado,” Dr. Becky Takeda-Tinker, President of CSU Global, said in a statement.

The school district has been working to expand professional development opportunities for staff as a solution to the nationwide teacher shortage. The new programs, the district said, are designed to prepare educators for leadership and administrative roles within Douglas County schools.

The local Gingerbread House seen by millions of people, bringing joy to many Hazard family competes on national Christmas light competition It was a dream come true for Walter Hazard when he got his chance to compete on the national television show, “The Great Christmas Light Fight.”

However, putting up his red and green lights every year holds a stronger meaning to him as the display is inspired by the people around him.

Although the Hazard’s Gingerbread House has been a fan favorite for the community over the years, their lights have recently gotten a lot of social media attention for its precision.

“This little house in Highlands Ranch that people have grown up with has been seen by millions of people now,” said Hazard.

For over 20 years, Hazard has slowly added more lights to his house.

The evolution

He first started by lining the edges of his roofline with lights when one day, a young girl in the neighborhood told him his house looked like a gingerbread house.

“I didn’t know what I was doing and that’s when it kind of clicked,” said Hazard. “I said, ‘you know what, I’m going to embrace this’.”

In fact, Hazard learned that the technique of outlining the roofline is called gingerbreading.

About seven years ago, another person in the neighborhood suggested that Hazard make giant candy canes for his yard. Hazard said he didn’t know how to make that happen, but the idea came to him in the middle of the night.

Using white PVC pipes, Hazard spray painted red onto them to make them look like a classic candy cane. He then added lights around the candy cans to make them visible, but at the same time made them blend into the candy cane by spray painting them white and red.

Hazard ended up making 20 candy canes, which line up along either side of his driveway and point towards the house.

“That kind of ratcheted things up,”

said Hazard.

In the following years, Hazard decided to make Colorado inspired lollipops.

He mirrored the stripes of the candy canes with blue and white stripes and the Colorado sun as the lollipop.

At that time, Hazard had been using wire fencing to put the snowflakes on his roof when he discovered that he could take the wire fencing and make a frame out of it and wire the lights one by one to ensure each light is at the perfect angle.

Painted in red, green and white lights, the colors on the house make Hazard reflect and think of everlasting life.

Five years ago, in the midst of telling his friends and family that it was his goal to be on the only televised Christmas light competition, he made a change to LED lights.

“I use less plugs and electricity and I have 10 times more lights,” said Hazard.

Hazard always had help from his two kids, but as they grew up and moved out, kids from around the neighborhood, like Ryan and Dylan, have helped Hazard for years.

“They brighten my world,” said Hazard.

Despite not being chosen the first

time he applied to the show five years ago and the pandemic, Hazard said it was a blessing in disguise because it gave him more time to put more lights on the house and in his yard.

Inspired by his memories of watching the scene from “A Charlie Brown’s Christmas” when Charlie and Linus go to the tree farm, Hazard began building Christmas trees. Like the frames on his house, each strand of light is wired to the perfect angle.

He thought he was only going to make a few trees, but ended up making over 30, adding purple into the mix for his wife.

Not only did he honor his wife in the display, Hazard wanted to pay homage to his friends’ cultural backgrounds, so he made a sign that says “Merry Christmas” in different languages.

In August 2022, Hazard got the call he had been waiting for. He made it onto the show.

Children’s South hosts special parade

It was a cold morning with fresh snow on the ground, but spirits were warm and bright as it was time for the annual holiday parade at Children’s Hospital Colorado South Campus in Highlands Ranch.

With the holiday spirit buzzing around the full hospital, nurses gathered patients and their families and brought them to the windows of the hospital for the chance to wave to some of their favorite movie characters.

pital staff braved the cold to get a close look of the parade.

Sondra Valdez, the director of patient care for the South Metro region and network of care at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said it was the perfect time for the parade.

“The kids just love it,” said Valdez.

“The inpatients, they’re so excited.”

To help celebrate the holiday season, Children’s Hospital Colorado started the tradition of inviting community members about five years ago to walk around the South Campus and bring holiday cheer to kids and their families.

“It brings the community together,

but also brings the spirit of Christmas and it’s such a great community event,” said Valdez.

Douglas County Sheriff Office vehicles turned on their lights, Santa Claus got a ride in the decorated South Metro fire truck and a dinosaur vehicle from the Nature and Science museum joined the parade.

Two Denver Broncos Cheerleaders accompanied Thunder, the Denver Broncos mascot, as members from the Broncos Stampede Drumline played some upbeat tunes.

Everyone’s faces lit up with excitement when Batman, Harley Quinn, characters from “Guardians of the

“But what a way to bring joy to the kids who are not feeling their best right now,” said Valdez. “Just to see their smile, that’s just fun.”

F

or those who regularly read this column, you know that I am a huge sports fan. I love watching our Avalanche play. I’m not a huge basketball fan, but I’ve come FROM THE to like Nikola Jokic quite a bit over the last EDITOR year. I love him both on and off the court.

I am not a huge Broncos fan. I admit it — I like the Chiefs.

But I am glad to see the home team coming along under Sean Payton.

I have always been Thelma Grimes a major football fan.

Football is the reason I became a journalist back in those young days with dreams of only covering sports.

Nowadays, besides watching several pro sports games, I am also a huge fan of anything my children are playing.

While one is heading toward liking football next year, right now both boys are all about hockey.

That leads me to my point — in all the sports I watched this year and some last year, there is a growing problem. The referees. They are awful.

Jokic has been kicked out of multiple games this year. I love it when even he is perplexed as to why. I also love it when fans who paid to specifically see him want a refund when he’s kicked out early. I say they deserve a refund.

Then, there is the NFL. Man, this is probably the worst year of officiating I have ever seen.

Every game seems to be decided this year by a referee. To some degree, it was last year too. The timing of flags is suspicious. The specific penalties being called are suspicious. You do start questioning the game. Is it rigged for specific teams?

Are referees involved in gambling? Maybe it’s all about their fantasy teams?

At one time a bad call here or there was expected. But this year — the NFL has a major problem, making avid fans like me watch a lot less. If I’m skipping more games this year than ever, you must wonder how many others are too.

Then, we come down to the local level with my children’s sports. Some may think I am biased, but that’s OK. I likely am a little bit.

My son plays in the 10U no-check league with the Arapahoe Warriors. I saw hints of issues last year when we

played an aggressive team that took out our star player with a dirty hit in the first period. The referees never got that game under control and multiple players were unnecessarily hurt.

This year, I’ve seen a game where there were four refs on the ice. Three were in training and one supposedly was the trainer. I watched whistles being blown for no reason. I watched them allow a score after the buzzer ended the period.

I watched them take away another goal saying the scoring team had a roughing call. Interestingly, the whistle did not blow when that team gained control of the puck, which is the rule.

At one game, I talked to a dad of one of the referees, who is 15. I think it’s fantastic that we have kids stepping into an officiating role. I also learned a lot from that dad about how parents can behave terribly and say unimaginable things to his son. I have seen that behavior myself and even changed some of my own behavior because of what he told me that day. I do understand his side.

However, I am also that parent paying thousands of dollars into a league to have my son play a sport he has come to love. I have watched politics play a part in the team he is put on. I have watched referees take a kids’ game and make it less fair or fun.

In all levels of sports, officiating is a true problem, and whether it’s the NFL, NBA or youth levels — the officials should be held accountable for horrible performances.

Locally, a coach and administrator of my son’s league said a huge problem is having a referee shortage. I am being told parent and fan behavior makes it hard to keep and recruit referees. I understand and see their side too. I understand it’s a complex issue.

This has led to a “hands off ” mentality regarding referee decisions. It’s OK that game-changing calls are being made because we have to be nice to them, so they do not leave.

A coach told me that referees in every sport are getting so much power that it’s gone to their head and there is no accountability, which means the problem will get worse before it gets better.

When parents stop paying, when fans stop buying tickets — will that create change?

Peace amidst chaos and confusion

hen swirling storms of stress crash around us, peace feels impossible to grasp. And trying to keep up the pace in that race is exhausting and disrupts our peace. Seeking temporary refuge is not weakness but wisdom — an acknowledgement of our human limits.

Begin by carving out small pockets of peace in your daily routine.

Pause each morning before the day storms in. Brew a cup of coffee or tea, then sit quietly as dawn’s rosy glow fills your window. Breathe deeply and invite calming thoughts in and to help order your steps.

Unplug regularly too — both

from devices and people. Go for long meandering walks without an agenda. Let nature’s quiet rhythms still your spinning thoughts. Play soothing music and get lost in the notes.

When facing major decisions or dizzying uncertainty, plan an extended retreat. Book a weekend at a campground cabin with nothing but your family, books, journal and hiking trails. Pull away to gain proper perspective. There is one particular area of aspen and pine trees that I like to ski through in Beaver Creek, Colorado. And within that area, there is a place that hardly anyone else ever goes. I especially love skiing into that area on a snowy day as the only sound I can hear is the snow as it falls gently on my head and shoulders. And every time, I stop, pause and pray, and that brings me tremendous peace.

Again, life often feels like a turbulent ocean, tossing us about in its waves. Stress, uncertainty, and struggles frequently disturb our peace. Yet even amid raging storms, we can nurture an abiding inner peace that smooths restless waters.

The key is differentiating between peace of mind and peace of heart.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Antenna is good idea

As a former mayor of Denver, important issues that arose with our neighborhoods included the need for more restrooms in our parks and better wireless communication in all parts of the city, which is vital for police and fire safety, along with educational purposes. Both became a priority for the city, yet we often struggled with ways to fund such needs.

The town of Castle Rock has an opportunity to address both these needs without using tax dollars. Bison Park is poised to get a new restroom, valued at $500,000, that will benefit all visitors to the park. This cost will be covered by T-Mobile, which with town approval will be allowed to put a wireless communication antenna and equipment on top of the restroom at Bison Park.

I appreciate that some neighbors are concerned about this equipment, however, I have researched information that convinces me that wireless communication facilities are safe and strictly overseen by the Federal Communications Commission.

Therefore, I urge the Castle Rock Planning Commission and the Town Council to approve this project because the benefits will help the entire community.

Sadly, I understand the great need for better internet service for police and fire, which was evident during the horrible Columbine High School shootings in 1999. The lack of coordinated communications impacted police response and led communities nationwide to assure wireless service is upgraded for public safety.

We also saw the need for better wireless services for educational needs, especially during the pandemic. No student should have to leave their home to find good connectivity.

Most communities and cities have had to spend taxpayer dollars to make these vital wireless service and park restroom improvements, which takes money away from other needs.

Castle Rock is in an unique position to have these needs addressed without cutting back in other town services.

Wellington Webb Denver’s mayor, 1991-2003 Partisanship, not partnership

In his final Douglas County School Board meeting before resigning, Mike Peterson used his platform to

preach “partnership not partisanship.” However, when the board including newly elected Brad Geiger, Valerie Thompson and reelected Susan Meek went on to vote for board leadership, the KidsFirst candidates proved once again they are not interested in partnership.

The board president’s role is to ensure the integrity of the board’s process as the policy making authority for the district. Susan Meek has spent her career supporting public education including consulting with school boards, school districts, nonprofits, and education organizations in strategic planning and policy governance across the state. Yet, the board voted 4-3 in favor of their own Christy Williams of the KidsFirst slate to be president.

Then, when the opportunity came to partner with new members of the board by electing Brad Geiger as the vice president, the KidsFirst members again voted 4-3 in favor of their own Kaylee Winegar. Brad Geiger has spent a decade volunteering for the district on the Long Term Planning Committee and has a record of working with people of differing opinions.

Electing one-sided board leadership is not choosing partnership over partisanship. The voters spoke on Nov. 7 that they were tired of the drama and lawsuits brought about when the KidsFirst candidates were elected. Instead of listening to the community, unfortunately the board decided to continue along the path of partisan decision making.

Margaret Furlow, Highlands Ranch Thankful for tornado help

June 22 was a historic day in Highlands Ranch. The tornado that touched down in Highlands Ranch created many challenges by damaging homes, taking down historic trees, and impacting parks and open space — but luckily no lives were lost.

In the immediate aftermath of the damage, a Tornado Team was formed. We saw neighbors helping neighbors. More than 2,000 volunteers from near and far reached out to provide aid, and our local government agencies sprang into action.

As we approach the end of the year, I look back at photos of the damage, and I look at our community now.

I can’t believe how quickly we removed trees and root balls.

Brighton artist paints fantastic realism

J

udith Dickinson was born to be an artist.

When she was 8, numerous artists saw her talent and offered to teach her.

“I’ve been fortunate to continue my art education through the years working under some top artists, most recently Craig Tennant, Anthony Ryder and Michael Shane Neal,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson naturally developed the talent to oil paint portraits in accurate detail, depicting nature and contemporary life.

Southwest Art Magazine, Art Collector Magazine and Art of the West Magazine have also featured Dickinson’s work.

Dickinson said she didn’t go to college for art, where the lessons were on abstract art. She preferred painting realism, so she got her degree in education in Philadelphia at Cairn University but continued to paint when she could.

Dickinson brings the emotions and character of a real-life figure or scene to her paintings. She primarily paints portraits of clients and people around the world.

Dickinson said she had painted portraits of famous people such as Judge Judy and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as paintings of many Christian leaders.

She also did portraits for former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and his wife.

“Portrait commissions are what pays the most,” she said. “Portraits are very hard to do because each person is so different and you’ve got to be right on.”

Move to Colorado

Dickinson grew up in New Jersey on 700 acres of wooded countryside with lakes. She moved to Colorado in 1996.

“I do miss the trees, but I love Colorado for the sunshine every day,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson moved to Brighton in 2007, and her art career expanded.

“When we drove into Brighton, it was a small town, and many places were boarded up with Christmas decorations that were still up in March,” she said.

Dickinson found an 1888 historic home for sale and decorated it with antiques from New Jersey.

“The home was owned by the first sheriff of Brighton, J.P. Higgins, who later became the third mayor. We love SEE PAINTING MASTERS, P17

the house,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson said the city of Brighton offered them the former empty police station to turn into Main Street Gallery to help revitalize downtown.

Its gallery houses Colorado artists, also called the Main Street Creatives, offering art classes and hosting receptions.

It also has ten studio spaces.

“We have great teachers teaching 16 to 20 artists, running studios and showing in the gallery. …It’s wonderful that the city enables us to do that, “Dickinson said.

Dickinson Art Studio is in the old jail of the police building.

“I come to jail every day to do my art,” she said with a laugh.

“I come to my studio six days a week because I love it.”

Work in Africa

Dickinson and her husband’s lives changed when they went to work in Africa to start an orphanage in Uganda and work with the pygmy tribes in Rwanda.

What inspired Judith and Gary Dickinson to open an orphanage in Uganda? Gary was a professor at a New Jersey University with several African students, and one of them was like a brother to them.

“We were sending money for special projects,” Judith said.

Judith said Gary traveled to Uganda, and a person he helped invited him to come to a remote village to thank him.

When he arrived, he found many kids running around.

“This guy was trying to take these children in, they were living off the land and barely went to school. Gary said we can’t do everything, but this is one thing we can focus on, so it’s when he started the orphanage,” Judith said.

living to help sponsor the kids.

Judith said her painting sales went toward her work in Africa, and they continue to work there today. Gary goes three to four times a year, and she goes occasionally.

“A friend told us about a pygmy tribe that lives in poverty, so we went to work with two other tribes that had never learned to read or write,” Judith said.

Dickinson said the kids have been in school for eight years now, and they rebuilt their huts. They are being taught how to farm and are receiving clean water and medical care.

Dickinson said they took their grandchildren, three sons and their wives to Africa in June.

“They got to see how the other side of the world lives,” she said.

Clarke’s Concert of the Week — Annie Booth Trio and Friends at Dazzle

Listen, if you’ve been a reader of mine for the last few years, you know I’m going to write about the Annie Booth Trio’s annual performance of themusic Vince Guaraldi wrote for “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Celebrating that episode of television and its music might be my favorite holiday tradition.

What makes this year special is it’s the trio’s (pianist Booth, bassist Patrick McDevitt and drummer Alejandro Castaño) 10th year playing these tunes, so there are some exciting additions to the proceedings. would have hung up and called the sheriff ’s office to confirm the information.

Orr filed a police report with the Castle Rock Police Department and a fraud report with his bank, but doesn’t believe he will see any of his money again. A friend set up a GoFundMe to try and raise back the lost funds.

Orr said he is sharing his story because he wants to prevent other people from becoming victims of scams like his.

“The reason why this is rampant in our country is because there’s no

one to stop them,” he said. “I hope people know they don’t have to be silent when this happens.”

Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Cocha Heyden said Orr’s story is not unique as scam calls impersonating officers and spoofing the office’s phone number have been common for years, but are becoming more sophisticated with new technology.

Heyden said the scams often target the elderly, but aren’t limited to any age group or socio-economic status.

“I think people get tricked by the sense of fear and urgency (of the scams) because many people don’t deal with law enforcement, or if they do, it’s in a positive manner,” Heyden said.

A Dec. 5 post on Nextdoor from Castle Pines shared a story very similar to Orr’s experience, where an alleged Douglas County officer called about a PPP loan. The poster determined it was a scam, but wrote that the call was very convincing.

Heyden said officers don’t handle PPP loan related concerns and will never call asking for payment over the phone.

“We may call people about a case or a warrant to say ‘this is how you take care of it,’ but we’ll never ever ask anyone to complete legitimate business by purchasing gift cards, using bitcoin or paying over the phone,” Heyden encouraged people to ask questions or even hang up and call back through the office’s non-emer-

gency number to confirm whether a call is real. She said red flags for scam calls include asking for money, threats or fear mongering and a sense of urgency and secrecy.

Once someone has been scammed, Heyden said it is often difficult to figure out who the scammer is or return any money that’s been bilked, so the priority is prevention. She added that it’s important to report scams so that law enforcement can educate others about them.

“Don’t be embarrassed to report, we want people to call us so we can nip it in the bud,” she said. “It takes all of us to try and prevent these crimes through sharing information and citizens helping to spread the word,”

Health department warns about recalled applesauce

The federal Food and Drug Administration announced it is investigating elevated lead levels in some cinnamon applesauce and apple puree pouches, pointing to brands that include one sold through retailers including Amazon, Dollar Tree and other online outlets, according to the FDA’s website.

The Douglas County Health Department has visited retailers in the county to ensure products are no longer stocked, but the department “urges you to check your pantry.”

Products affected by a food safety recall include: • WanaBana apple cinnamon

fruit puree pouches, including “three packs” • Schnucks brand cinnamonflavored applesauce pouches and variety pack • And Weis brand cinnamon applesauce pouches.

WanaBana is sold nationally through multiple retailers including Amazon, Dollar Tree and other online outlets.

Schnucks products are only available at Schnucks and Eatwell Markets grocery stores, and Weis brand pouches are only sold at Weis grocery stores, both located outside of Colorado, according to a Douglas County news release.

Locally, the Douglas County Health Department investigates reports of elevated lead levels. To date, none of its investigations have been associated with this recall, the Dec. 12 release said.

The recalled products are potentially associated with childhood lead poisoning cases across the country, according to the release.

“People who have these products at home should discard them.

Children who have eaten the products recently should get a blood lead test,” the county’s release said.

“Most children have no obvious immediate symptoms. Parents and caretakers should consult a health care provider if they suspect a child may have been exposed to lead.”

Lead is toxic to humans and can affect people of any age or health

status. Protecting children from exposure to lead is particularly important because they are more susceptible to lead toxicity, the FDA’s website says.

Short-term exposure to lead, according to the FDA, could result in the following symptoms: headache, abdominal pain or colic, vomiting, or anemia.

Longer-term exposure, according to the FDA, could result in the following additional symptoms: irritability, lethargy, fatigue, muscle aches or muscle prickling or burning, constipation, difficulty concentrating or muscular weakness, tremor, or weight loss.

With plans to film in early November, Hazard had to get approval from the Highlands Ranch Community Association to put his lights up early. He said the association and his neighbors were extremely supportive. “[The show] is hokey and goofy and our family embraced the goofiness,” said Hazard.

Alongside Hazard were his wife, daughter, son and daughter-in-law all dressed in their gingerbread man onesies and welcomed their judge Carter Oosterhouse as he was about to see their house for the first time.

Hazard was surprised that their judge’s first look was during the filming and not beforehand, which made the moment even more exciting and nerve wracking.

the meticulousness of the display and blown away by the frames Hazard had made. At the time of filming, Hazard had 312 frames on his house, which is now up to 325.

What wasn’t shown on the episode was how the Hazards were able to use their garage even with frames and Christmas trees on it.

Filming the family interview will always be memorable for Hazard because the weather took a turn and it began to snow.

Hazard said at one point they had to stop the interview as there was a half inch of snow piled on his head.

Although the Hazard family didn’t win the episode, Hazard said the comments they received from production, staff and Oosterhouse was all worth it.

On the episode, Oosterhouse said the family “went to pure artistry.”

“That was the highest compliment,” said Hazard. “It truly was… and that came from him.”

“It’s like the best moment of my entire life,” said Hazard.

At the beginning of the holiday season, the Hazard Gingerbread House had 3,200 followers. After posting a video of him lighting the house, that number has grown and over 3 million have viewed the video, even people from overseas are commenting on the house.

“It’s just as impressive if you go up 100 yards and look at the house from a distance,” said Hazard. “You can see that the house has so many twinkling, color changing lights, that the house has a pulse to it.”

While many of the landscape looks barren where there were once many trees, I look forward to seeing new plantings over the next few years, and watch the community continue to flourish.

Saying thank you doesn’t seem to be enough to express my gratitude to the many individuals and organizations that stepped up and supported our community. There are many unsung heroes whose names you will probably never know. In the days after the tornado they provided their time and skills to help our community recover.

• Many members of volunteer agencies saved homeowners more than $600,000 by assisting with limb and tree breakdown and removal.

• Staff from Douglas County assisted by providing drop off locations, debris pick up, debris haul away, and so much more.

• Highlands Ranch Community Association staff helped volunteer organizations and residents navigate the

heal and shape us. Though chaos still swirls around us, His perfect peace guards our hearts and minds. Even when pounding waves threaten to sink us, we stand serene, anchored in calmness. We feel the peace that transcends circumstance.

In chaos, our instinct is to worry and overanalyze. But peace flows most freely when we surrender control. Declutter your frenzied mind so God’s gentle whisper can get through.

No matter the external noise, once grounded, we can once again find ourselves in that perfect peace. We simply must continually retreat into His presence — our shelter from the raging storms.

Last week I wrote about hope, this week is about peace, next week will be about joy, and then the final column in this four-part series will finish with a column about love. Highlands Ranch boys basketball coach Jordan Carter has an inexperienced team this season and he enjoyed the Falcons’ 34-point win over Littleton.

Sophomore George West III scored 17 points, had five assists and seven steals to lead Highlands Ranch to a 71-37 win over the Lions on Dec. 15.

“My team is full of new varsity players so I have essentially seven new varsity players,” said Carter.

“There are no returning starters and two guys that were bench players. I have seven guys that played junior varsity last year.

“So any type of physical, competitive type game is good for our guys.

“Our league has Rock Canyon, ThunderRidge, Chaparral so we are

running out of time to get ready for those games so any type games with a competitive atmosphere is good.

What we try to emphasize to our guys is taking steps and getting better every day.”

Treyton Fletcher, a 6-6 senior, was high for the Lions with 14 points.

“We turned it over way too often and too early,” said Littleton coach Ryan Fletcher. “It’s hard to duplicate their (Highlands Ranch) pressure in practice. We tried but we dug ourselves too big of a hole.

“We have a tough, challenging non-conference schedule. We have one more before the break with Longmont and that will be a tough test. We come back from that and go into league (Jefferson County 4A/5A). We will be ready for that.”

to declare their own personal pronouns,” Kane said.

Kane did not clarify whether misgendering is considered harassment or discrimination under district policy.

Citing the ambiguity of the policy, the District Accountability Committee encouraged the board to strike the provisions around compelled speech and disclosure.

“This language has discriminatory and legal implications, it can be harmful to students and it opens the district to litigation,” Julie Gooden, a District Accountability

Committee member, said.

The committee also suggested removing the opt-out language because the district already has other policies dealing with that process.

Similarly, they said the language about parents having the right to raise their children according to their beliefs was redundant.

“We concur that parents’ rights are important, however, the text sufficiently covers the expectations and importance of the role of parents in their child’s learning,” Gooden said.

In addition, the committee recommended the policy include staff as collaborators and align with the standards of the Colorado Association of School Boards and the National Standards for Family-School

Partnerships.

Before presenting to the board, the committee gathered feedback on their recommendations through an online survey, which 54 parents, staff and students filled out. The overwhelming majority of respondents supported the changes.

Board members Christy Williams and Kaylee Winegar raised questions about the feedback that disagreed with the committee’s proposed changes.

One survey respondent who didn’t agree with the proposed changes said they supported keeping the language about parents rights because they are not problematic, even if it’s redundant.

Board members Susan Meek and

Brad Geiger said they had concerns about the existing language leading to discrimination or a lawsuit.

“As a lawyer, I’m concerned someone will try to use this language as some sort of defense to discipline for bullying,” Geiger said. “Part of our job is to make sure our policies are both clear and not inconsistent with other policies.”

Meek and Geiger also supported creating a separate policy on the rights of district stakeholders, including parents, staff and students.

The board didn’t take action on the changes at the meeting. Kane said district administration is working on a plan for interpreting and implementing the parent engagement policy.
