Douglas County leaders remember Roger Partridge

A longtime county official known for his kindness has died, leaving other Douglas County leaders to recall the mark he made.

Former Commissioner Roger Partridge died in late October in his mid-60s.

Voters elected Partridge in 2012 and reelected him in 2016 to serve four more years in office, a tenure that took him through historic challenges such as the start of the coronavirus pandemic and the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting.

In his day-to-day work as a commissioner, Partridge focused primarily on transportation, open space, wildfire prevention and water conservation.

In a statement, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office said it was “deeply saddened” by the news that Partridge passed away.

“Commissioner Partridge was a kind and honorable man. He set the example for what an elected official

should be,” Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “He was a good friend and a tremendous supporter of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, as well as the Office of Emergency Management. His loss is personally devastating, and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family.”

Commissioner Abe Laydon, one of the county’s three current elected leaders, called Partridge “a true gentleman cowboy who served his county with great faith, commitment and dedication.”

As chair of the Douglas commissioners, Partridge “kept meetings light and positive, even when agitators abounded. During the height of his cancer battle, he took negativity from persistent detractors in stride and kept his focus on our governance role,” Laydon said. “Roger never succumbed to pettiness even when it would have been easy to, and always took the high road.”

town in Indiana and received a bachelor’s degree in health and safety education from Purdue University and double master’s degrees in athletic training and physical therapy from West Virginia University and Arcadia University, respectively, according to biographical information from Douglas County.

Prior to settling in Colorado, he

worked as an athletic trainer for the New York Jets and at three universities, according to the county. He started his physical therapy practice in Castle Rock in 1987 while living in Littleton and moved to Douglas County in 1994 to be closer to his practice.

Wind Crest opens 4 new pickleball courts

Pickle-flavored food and drinks were served and staff at Wind Crest, the senior living community in Highlands Ranch, dressed up in pickle costumes for the grand opening of four outdoor pickleball courts.

As pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S., the idea of courts of their own has been on some residents and staff ’s radar for some time and on Oct. 27, it became a reality.

Years ago, Wind Crest staff had chosen a potential location for the new pickleball courts, but it was too close to some of the buildings and some residents raised concerns about the noise and echo.

Looking elsewhere, they ended up designing courts near the front entrance of Wind Crest, which is located at 3235 Mill Vista Rd. “We did the initial design and presented it to the pickleball club,” said Craig Erickson, executive director at SEE PICKLEBALL, P5

After the team resubmitted a design with a north-south orientation, four courts were constructed, opened and had residents playing immediately.

Just within the front entrance of the campus, the courts are about 170 feet from the edge of the court to the apartments, said Erickson.

Typically, the pickleball club at Wind Crest has reserved time and plays outdoors at Clement Park in Littleton and indoors at Arapahoe Community College.

Therefore, the accessibility of having four courts on site, available for any of the residents to play and learn is an accomplishment for Wind Crest.

“It’s a game changer,” said Fred Clift, who leads the community’s pickleball club. “Because now we can walk to our courts.”

Although many residents walk and ride their bikes to the court, there is a campus shuttle that takes residents back and forth from the courts.

Both Erickson and Clift do not believe the noise is going to be an issue as there are some noise barriers, such as the courts being near the front road, covered parking and trees to help mitigate the sound.

They also noted that there are no resident balconies facing the courts.

There may have been initial con-

cerns about the noise, but Clift said there have been no complaints thus far.

Additionally, the club is excited to have their own courts as they have seen courts being closed at Congress Park and Eisenhower Park in Denver due to the noise complaints.

The courts are strictly for residents. However, guests are allowed to play when invited by a resident.

As it is not as intense as tennis, Erickson said pickleball is creating physical activity for residents and is also a very social sport.

“You have these points that go back and forth,” said Erickson. “And most any game, people are laughing, and you know, having fun and talking about things.”

Clift is a former tennis player and began playing pickleball about 10 years ago. He said what he likes most about the sport is that it’s very good for fitness and cardio.

Currently, club members play from 9 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They also host beginner and education courses that teach people about technique and how to score.

Having played himself, Erickson said it’s pretty easy to mix in more advanced players with beginners and still have a good time.

Wind Crest also purchased a bunch of paddles and balls so that any resident who wants to try, can try before investing.

Looking forward to the spring, the club is looking to have a membership along with social events, tournaments and a mentor committee that will help new players start and improve on new skills.

“As we age, it’s really good for people to keep moving and this will get you moving on the court,” said Clift.

Centennial Water proposes rate increases for Highlands Ranch

The Centennial Water and Sanitation District’s 2024 proposed budget is available for review as the district is proposing a rate increase for next year.

The water district is proposing an average 6% rate increase and a new infrastructure investment fee of $7.50 per month.

With new rates typically going into effect in the first billing period after Jan. 1, a public hearing will be held during the regular board meeting on Monday, Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m..

The public is invited to the meet-

ing, which will be held at 62 Plaza Drive in Highlands Ranch. Prior to the meeting, an agenda and an optional Zoom link will be posted to the district’s website Wednesday, Nov. 22 at centennialwater.org.

Centennial Water’s General Manager Sam Calkins said the district makes efforts to balance affordability with the need to protect public health and water quality.

“Over the last several decades, the district has successfully navigated challenges without significant rate increases,” said Calkins in a press release statement. “We are at a time where we need to make a financial investment in aging infrastructure

and that can’t be done without increasing rates.”

Centennial Water does not collect property taxes and is mostly funded by water rates.

Established by the district’s board of directors, rates are based on the cost to deliver water to customers and taking the water to be treated when customers are done using it.

Additionally, rates recover the cost of maintenance and operations such as cost for staff, treatment chemicals, utilities, ongoing repairs and capital investments, water acquisition and debt service.

As inflation and construction costs increase, Zach Cartaya, director of finance and administration for the district, said in the press release that increasing rates is a necessity at the moment.

“These are increasing our operational and capital costs,” said Carta-

ya. “Without the increased revenue coming in from rates, crucial upgrades to our system won’t be possible.”

On the district’s website at centennialwater.org/proposedbudget, the budget document shows Centennial Water’s expenditure plan for the ensuing year. It identifies the resources and revenues available to fund it.

The website also includes a summary fact sheet that shows the rate comparison of other local water providers such as Parker Water and Sterling Ranch.

The estimated annual water and wastewater bill for a typical single family residence is just over $1,300, according to the summary fact sheet.

According to the district, the rate increase is necessary to enable Centennial Water to continue to deliver efficient operations and investment for today and for the future.

County names members of new water commission

Months of discussion on who will help decide the future of water supply in Douglas County have come to an end now that county leaders have chosen 11 members of a new volunteer board, including a name that one county leader especially objected to.

“I still have concerns with Sean Tonner” being placed on the board, said Commissioner Lora Thomas.

Thomas has pointed to Tonner’s connection to a proposed plan to pump water to Douglas County from Southern Colorado.

After weeks of community concern culminating in active searches by the Englewood Police Department, unopposed school board candidate Davon Williams turned himself in on an outstanding warrant Nov. 6.

Glendale police confirmed that he turned himself in at their facility on the morning of Nov. 6 and was processed and released around 9 a.m.

Englewood police also said Williams had bond paperwork on Nov. 6, and Lexis CourtLink, a court records database, shows an entry on Nov. 6 saying “Release Warrant on Bond.”

Englewood Herald that the department’s Impact Team went looking for Williams on Nov. 6 in connection with an arrest warrant stemming from an accusation of car theft that occurred in Adams County in 2019.

A search of Colorado court dockets shows no pending court dates in the case as of Nov. 7.

“They ran his name through NCIC prior to attempting to pick him up on his warrant and the warrant was still active at that time,” Disner said.

“They were able to talk to him as he was leaving his residence a few hours later and he had bond paperwork from Adams County Courts from earlier in the day. His warrant was no longer in the NCIC system at that time, so he was allowed to

On Nov. 2, the Englewood Police Department confirmed that they were trying to locate Williams to arrest him for the Adams County arrest warrant, which court records showed had been active since January 2020. The incident that led to the filing of Adams County car-theft charges occurred in 2019 when Williams was 29 years old. He was convicted in earlier car-theft and theft felonies that occurred in 2012 and 2013.

In a Nov. 2 email to the Englewood Herald, Williams said, “I have counsel dealing with this. No comment.”

Running unooposed, Williams remains set to join the Englewood School Board with the swearing in ceremony set for Dec. 5.

Meek, Geiger, Thompson elected to school board 3 defeat conservatives

A high voter turnout in Douglas County boosted school board candidates Susan Meek, Brad Geiger and Valerie Thompson over a more conservative slate of candidates, upsetting the Republican status quo for the school board.

With over 143,000 ballots counted as of 4:23 p.m. Nov. 8, Meek, Geiger and Thompson have comfortable leads over candidates Andy Jones, David DiCarlo, Jason Page and Maria Sumnicht.

Meek, Geiger and Thompson ran as the Community Choice, Community Voice coalition with a platform of retaining and attracting teachers, restoring community trust and ensuring safe and welcoming schools for all students.

Jones, Page and Sumnicht ran as the Best DCSD slate, a conservative campaign with a platform of school safety, academic excellence, parents’ rights and expanding career and technical education.

Despite Jones, Page and Sumnicht running as conservatives, only DiCarlo was endorsed by the Douglas County GOP. DiCarlo was the only conservative candidate who opposed ballot measures 5A and 5B, which aimed to increase school funding through tax dollars.

About 92,000 people voted in the 2019 Douglas County school board race and more than 118,000 voters participated in 2021, when the current board majority was elected.

That election was seen as a mandate from voters pushing back against covid pandemic restrictions.

So far, more than 124,000 voters participated in the school board election this year, the highest turnout in recent school board elections.

Meek, who was first elected to the board in 2019, has now seen overwhelming voter support for two elections in a row. In 2019, Meek beat Jones by more than 2,200 votes and this year, that margin widened to more than 7,300 votes.

On election night, Meek said she feels that along with Geiger and Thompson, they will represent the majority of Douglas County.

“I think the majority aligns with what we’ve said about student-centered decision making and ensuring we’re tack-

ling local issues, not national agendas,” Meek said. “One of our community’s top concerns is a loss of trust in our board, so that was central for us and our campaigns.”

Geiger echoed Meek in his comments on election night, saying voters showed their support for strong public education. Geiger received 48% of the vote.

Geiger ran against Page and DiCarlo who split the Republican vote. Page had 29% of the votes while DiCarlo had 23%, according to the latest election numbers.

“If you look at the voter demographics, we could not have the majority we have without Republicans and unaffiliated voters saying that competence matters and worrying about what’s best for the district, not national issues, is the most important thing,” Geiger said.

Douglas County voters are 33% Republican, 18% Democrat and 47% unaffiliated, according to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office.

A statement from Best DCSD said the candidates are grateful for the voters and their supporters, as well as congratulated Meek, Geiger and Thompson.

“We are grateful to all the members of the Douglas County community we were able to meet throughout our campaign who trusted us with their vote,” the statement said. “We are also appreciative of those who worked so hard to help us on our campaign journey. We’d

like to congratulate Susan, Valerie and Brad on their victory and hope they will seek academic excellence, safety and security, and parent, teacher and community partnerships in Douglas County Schools.”

DiCarlo said in a statement that he was thankful for the support he received and lamented the split vote in his race.

“The school board leadership and my opponent’s campaign manager set up an unfortunate three-way race when they appointed and ran a pro-tax candidate to challenge me,” he said. “Though we had hoped for a better outcome, we all knew it was going to be difficult when it became clear they were willing to sacrifice three board seats for a tax increase. I am thankful for the outpouring of support I received throughout the campaign and I’m confident conservative candidates will be able to build on what we accomplished and do better in future elections.”

In a statement from the Douglas County GOP Chair Steve Peck, Peck called Page a “spoiler candidate.”

“Based on the preliminary results, a majority of voters were clearly seeking a conservative representative of the district, and that was Mr. DiCarlo, who earned more than 75 percent support from the party in May 2023,” Peck said.

“I hope Republicans learn a important lesson from this cycle that ignoring and shunning the Republican Party will always be a recipe for disaster.”

A year after her exit from corporate America, Kelly Crossley has taken a leap and launched a store in Highlands Ranch full of pieces she loves.

Modern Vintage Marketplace, which opened on Nov. 1, carries home decor, collectibles, men’s and women’s clothing, and hundreds of other items that have caught the first-time business owner’s admiring eye.

“Each piece is uniquely picked by mostly me,” said Crossley, who pre-

viously worked in information technology and employee engagement.

Some products are selected by Wil Crossley, her husband and partner in the new endeavor.

Long before she started her adventure in retail, Crossley said she had curated a collection of items from her own life that were beautiful or well-made or held special meaning.

Authorities chase, apprehend suspected car thief

Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office arrested Armon Chism, of Denver, after responding to a report of a vehicle theft, which led to a short on-foot pursuit in a Highlands Ranch community.

On Nov. 6, patrol deputies responded to a report of an in-progress vehicle theft on Mill Vista Road. Authorities immediately established a perimeter.

According to Douglas County officials, as deputies searched the area, the vehicle was located with an occupant in a parking garage on Mill Vista Road.

According to a press release from the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, the suspect vehicle allegedly

attempted to back out of a parking space and as the deputy activated the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and pulled forward towards the suspect he accelerated the vehicle to move forward.

The suspect vehicle scraped and collided with the front passenger side push bumper of the patrol vehicle, then allegedly proceeded to run a stop sign and sped away.

Following a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle spun out of control and rolled backwards into a metal railing where it was then pinned in place by deputies.

A short foot pursuit followed along with a taser deployment, with police tracking down Chism and placing him under arrest.

that Chism was a suspect in an earlier vehicle pursuit of a stolen Hyundai Tucson at the Colorado Boulevard and County Line Road intersection as he was allegedly found in possession of the stolen ignition key.

The Hyundai vehicle was recovered nearby, according to the sheriff ’s office.

In the press release, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said they will not allow criminals to vic-

timize citizens.

Chism was booked into the Douglas County Jail for suspected motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, obstructing a peace officer, protection order violation, possession of a controlled substance – fentanyl – and criminal impersonation.

Find a property tax solution but keep it simple in new session

F

or the upcoming legislative special session to address property taxes, I urge my colleagues to follow a basic military principle: KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid).

Special sessions are truncated. They are neither the time nor the place for a grandiose reworking of tax law or addressing multiple issues that are not central to easing the shock of 40-100% property tax increases. If this is a legislative fire emergency warranting a special session, we need to focus on the fire. Particularly when this is an “emergency” of our own making.

After being elected, I repeatedly inquired into what was being done about property taxes. It was the Titanic of issues for which no one seemed concerned. If no one was addressing the issue, as a newly elected member assigned to the Finance Committee, I was willing to make the effort to do so. But I was repeatedly told that the

governor’s office was working on a plan and to leave the issue alone.

By March, however, I still had heard nothing. So, in the spirit of “a good plan now is better than a perfect one later,” when a GOP colleague brought forward a bill to limit property tax rises to 5%/year for three years, I was willing to cosponsor that effort.

That did not mean we had to leave the issue alone for three years or that 5% would have been the cap signed into law. A short-term band-aide, however, would have bought time to sort out a long-term solution. A solution that could have been socialized, publicized and, in the parlance of the state house, “stake-holded”. I was warned that the Governor’s office was working on a plan and that the legislature needed to wait.

But when the GOP bill came to the Finance Committee, I broke ranks to vote for this “time out” bill, which was defeated 5-6.

When the governor’s plan was finally presented in the last days of the session, I could not receive a straight answer to basic questions regarding how the law would impact local governments in my district. And when I finally insisted on simple declarative answers, the answers were wrong.

With more concerns regarding process rather than substance, I was one of seven Democrats to vote against the referred referendum that became Prop. HH. And I have no doubt that the process and complexity behind Prop HH is what led to its decisive rejection by nuanced swing voters who are not swayed by political slogans or rigid ideology.

So as we head into this special session, I urge colleagues to keep in mind

past mistakes and not create a rushed Wile E. Coyote ACME contraption of a solution that will not restore the trust and confidence of Colorado’s voters.

With only a few days in a special session, we should focus on a shortterm stop-gap solution to buy time to create a long-term, transparent, and easily understood solution in open session.

Given that we have had a national core inflation rate of 13% over the past two years, a stop-gap along the lines of a 15-20% cap for property tax rises due to reassessments (without improvements) or a property tax exemption of a baseline amount that would reflect a statewide rise of 15-20% (e.g., the first $100K of value), would likely be the ideal “emergency” solution for an “emergency” special session.

VOICES A moving tribute

W

e celebrated Veterans Day over the last week, and I love it when the community FROM THE does special things to EDITOR honor these men and women who have served in our armed forces.

For me, one ceremony was more emotional Thelma Grimes than I had expected. At Indian Ridge Elementary School in Centennial, my sons asked me all week to bring my dad to their special assembly. They asked more than once and were excited to show some pride in their grandpa.

On a funny side note , we have had to explain to my 7-year-old more than once that Papa is not old enough to have served in World War II. We explained instead that Papa was in Vietnam and served with honor.

During the short assembly, the school’s principal, Matt McDonald, said something I absolutely loved hearing to all the students between preschool and fifth grades. Mr. McDonald told the students that the assembly is not the only time to thank a veteran.

He told the students when they see a veteran wearing a hat or shirt in the community to say thank you then as well.

He told them it’s important to tell these men and women that we appreciate their service anytime.

This is a great lesson to teach our youth. It teaches them that it’s not just about honoring people for one day, but instead as a matter of routine.

As for my dad — I have written regularly about him having a rough year and nearly

dying twice. He is better now.

Back on track but still not overly energetic and doesn’t get out a lot.

I asked him to go with me to the school. He was a bit confused at first as we sat among 200 kids in a noisy gymnasium.

As the assembly went on the choir performed a thank you song, all of the kids sang each of the songs in honor of each branch of the military, and every veteran attending the event was asked to stand up.

After the ceremony, all of the kids lined the elementary school hallways, and each veteran was asked to walk along the route. Every single student participated in clapping and saying thank you to every veteran.

As we were walking out, Mr. McDonald also shook my dad’s hand. Several of the teachers and staff who have come to know our family this year — and know what my dad has been through — took moments to hug him.

My dad quietly told me — “This made me cry.” My dad is Mr. Rough and Tough. Having him say he was brought to tears says a lot.

For me, having so many in those hallways shows support not just my dad but for our family, and is part of the reason I love community schools where parents, teachers, and students are a part of our family.

While I love what Douglas and Arapahoe counties did with the Operation Green Light program, and I love other ceremonies held throughout the community — this one at the school ,with young students truly showing appreciation, will now hold a place in my heart forever.

Most parents have concerns about their child becoming an adult and think they face an increasingly tough world, a concern throughout time. Every generation has had its challenges and advantages.

My parents faced fighting in WW2 with limited food, gas, tires, sugar, jobs and other hardships. Yet, they survived and raised a wonderful and creative family with enough food on the table and at least one pair of shoes each.

When I became an adult, every male faced the Vietnam draft. “Have you fulfilled your military obligations?” was the 1st question on a job application. Interest rates for a home were 7.5%+++ and there was an electricity shortage nation-

wide. Granted, home prices were much less but so equally were wages. We found jobs, ways to afford a home and raise a family, though not always easy.

Our children became adults at a time of extreme interest rates and economic hardships. They found a way to find success, friends and raise a family.

Our granddaughter found ways to get thru college, find love, marry, begin saving for a home and is looking forward to starting a family.

Our grandsons are getting through college, studying and working hard toward their 2nd graduation in May and ready to “fly” where ever the world takes them.

My mother told me “I’m sorry to leave this world to you.” Generation to generation to generation to generation, every parent is concerned for their children to become adults, just part of being a parent.

If we have taught them perseverance, there should be no hand-wringing, only hope for the future. Every generation has faced its challenges and through perseverance has thrived. The next generations can and will do the same.

Wrong priorities

Colorado is facing a perfect storm of challenges that require clear-eyed, sober-minded leadership from our elected leaders at the state and federal level. Unfortunately, it appears our public officials are distracted pursuing personal vendettas instead of addressing the issues affecting everyday Coloradans.

Inflation is a prime example. Our state is not only home to the worst restaurant price inflation; the Denver Metro has the worst inflation problem of any metro area in the United States. These seemingly unstoppable price increases are cutting into our wages and making it harder to put on the table for our families.

Inflation is not the only surge we have seen in our state that our government has failed to take action against.

Reports from this spring found our state to have the highest rate of violent crime victimizations among the 22 most populous states in the country, with rates soaring to more than double the national average.

These are the problems that Colorado residents really care about, and they deserve adequate attention and action from our elected leaders. Instead, the Biden administration and

Attorney General Phil Weiser are busy trying to dismantle American tech companies at the request of their billionaire competitors, draining precious time and resources from our top law enforcement agencies in the process.

It’s time for our leaders to set aside these distractions and start taking on the issues impacting Coloradans.

Sonya Ellingboe earned your twopage tribute with years of insightful commentaries about the local art scene, that never — not once — included a negative word about an artist or their art, something that is unheard of in the art world where snarky opinions often shine a light on the author rather than on the individual she or he is writing about.

Sonya and I have had numerous interactions; all favorable; all jovial. I dedicated a painting of mine to her in 2018; I remember she blushed when she saw her name on the museum label.

A true Soldier of Art, Sonya trooped on even as her physical ability to do so was in decline. And her ever-present smile is something I will always remember about her. Continued trooping, Sonya.

LIFE Local artists express themselves through forms of metal, precious gems, unique designs

The heat of the torch, the smell of pickling solution, the sound of metal on a mandrel and the look of a completed piece are common aspects silversmiths and jewelers in the Denver metro area enjoy about their craft.

Sarah DeAngelo Jewelry: “Southwest, feminine, natural and detailed”

For Englewood business owner and professional jeweler Sarah DeAngelo, these aspects of the silversmithing system are elements she loves, but they come secondary in her personal process.

“I am obsessed with stones and the history of how a stone is formed and how it’s literally the only one in the world like it,” DeAngelo said.

She said taking a unique “peace of the Earth” and “turning it into this beautiful treasured something that makes somebody feel more beautiful” is her favorite part of the craft.

Originally from Los Angeles, DeAngelo began her career in 1997 after a terrible encounter with a rude customer. DeAngelo said she quit her job and the very next day began selling her pieces door-to-door at different businesses.

“I walked out the door and then the next morning I went around

with my little trays of jewelry to a bunch of stores and I got two retail stores that first morning and that sent me on a totally different path,” DeAngelo said.

DeAngelo currently has a retail store and studio at 16 E. Girard Ave. in Englewood.

She describes her styles as “Southwest, feminine, natural and detailed.”

“I make mostly sterling silver.

They’re usually hand stamped using Navajo stamps that I buy from the Navajo artists themselves and then (I use) unique gemstones that I literally search the world for,” DeAngelo said.

DeAngelo moved into her current location after outgrowing her last studio and while she wasn’t looking for retail, she’s happy she found it and she loves the connections she forms with people.

DeAngelo is an established artisan in the industry and she said she was featured in the Sundance Catalog. She said that was a dream goal for her and her work is sold in about 50 stores across the country.

She said the jewelry-making community is vast in Colorado because in her experience people seem to appreciate and value homemade items.

DeAngelo makes all sorts of pieces including rings, earrings and necklaces but she loves making earrings the most because they’re her favorite type of jewelry to wear.

DeAngelo said making a delicate piece can be very meticulous and detail-oriented.

“It’s harder than it looks…and it’s very exact,” DeAngelo said.

Fellow silversmith and production assistant of DeAngelo’s, Katie White is also enjoying the process of building her own business and finding a balance between her two worlds.

White said her specialties in jewelry making are stone setting and intricate stamping work and making things that “excite people and offend them too.”

Originally from New Jersey, White moved to Colorado about seven years ago and is now based in Boulder. White sells her pieces in Denver at markets and in galleries.

White said she was “stone obsessed” as a teenager. “I was collecting raw stones and I actually started wire wrapping and making mainly pendants and rings out of copper and brass,” White said.

During her senior year in high school, White said she was supporting herself, and while she enjoyed making her pieces, she was also selling them as a means of survival.

For White, the best aspect of jewelry making, which she has been doing for about nine years, is that it’s a three-dimensional art form.

“I really love that metal feels like a resource that I can time and time again manipulate,” White said. “It feels like it can be recycled and repurposed. It feels like there is always a story to any jewelry pieces and anything metal-related.”

When she makes a piece, White said she notices a correlation between her mental state and the process.

The silversmith said she will start her process off with a “ceremony” whether it’s making a cup of coffee, smoking herbs or cannabis or saying a prayer.

“Jewelry making is like putting a little piece of my soul and body energetics into something that someone’s going to wear forever,” White said.

White describes her jewelry as different, unique and bold.

“I would say my jewelry has a core theme of being alternative,” White said. “I definitely dabble in everything from being edgy punk to almost like biker babe to boho flowy (and) gem-centered.”

White said people enjoy her jewelry which she sells through Instagram, on her website and in five stores in Denver and two in New Jersey.

White joined DeAngelo’s studio about three months ago and enjoys executing DeAngelo’s style of wire wrapping and knotting.

“What’s cool is I feel like I am honing a lot of my more nitty gritty skills,” White said. “Just making my things look nicer, cleaner, production style and mass quantity.”

In her home studio of organized chaos, however, with her own production assistant and canine companion Dobby, White said she’s a “one-man show.”

“I move all over the place. I change things. I do have a tendency to go in between projects,” White said.

White said she believes she’s “creating magic” in her studio.

“I feel like I am working with my hands and get to view magic by the end. I feel like I am an alchemist.

I feel like I am connecting to the Earth,” White said.

Michelene Berkey: “Not for everyone”

Michelene Berkey is a metalsmith who has made jewelry for a large portion of her life and works from her home studio.

Based in Evergreen, Berkey said she designs and makes silver jewelry with high-carat gold accents, gemstones and different kinds of pearls.

Originally from New York, the 73-year-old said she has had an interest in jewelry making since she was child.

“My grandfather would go to the jewelry exchange in New York and bring home things wrapped up in little pieces of tissue paper and rubber bands,” Berkey said. “I remember standing at the table watching him unwrap these things and just being fascinated with jewelry.”

She attended California State of Long Beach, learned her techniques and “never stopped making (jewelry) and designing it.”

When she was in California, Berkey said she worked in various jewelry shops in the late 1970s and then she moved to Colorado. She said she didn’t have any jewelry connections and took a break from the craft profession to own and operate her own wallpaper and paint business.

Berkey said she returned to full time metalsmithing in 2000.

“The jewelry that I make is not traditional jewelry. It’s more what they call art jewelry,” Berkey said. “I know how to make traditional jewelry…That’s what I was trained to do but the jewelry that I am making now is made from little sections of cottonwood twigs and just natural things that I find.”

Berkey said the traditional process consists of a metalsmith making a piece out of wax, plastering it and then placing it in a “burnout” kiln where the wax is melted away.

“What’s left is the void of that particular piece that you’re making and then when you’re ready to actually do the casting you melt your metal and you pour it in and it fills in all of those places where the wax had been originally,” Berkey said.

She siad she wants her pieces to have a lot of texture.

“It’s an interesting process. The casting is the same as manufacturers would use to make anybody’s traditional wedding ring,” Berkey said. “In my case I am actually burning away the twigs because they burn away just the same as a wax.”

Berkey said her work is “not for everyone” but those who love it have responded well to her creations.

“The more people have seen it and understood that it’s silver and it’s made from the twigs they’re really fascinated with that,” Berkey said.

Berkey sells her work in galleries and she attends various shows throughout Colorado and other states.

Denver Jewelry Studio: A place to learn

Berkey is always willing to learn, and said she has attended the Denver Jewelry Studio in Littleton and taken classes in different techniques.

The studio has various levels of classes taught by many different instructors and managed carefully by studio owner Judy Brown.

“Our studio we call it a maker space. It’s basically for people who have no experience at all in metal smithing or they’re professionals and they’re looking to learn a new technique,” Brown said.

nental Divide Road, Unit 104 in Littleton, Brown said Denver Jewelry Studio is open daily, except on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are four total employees including Brown and 30 contract instructors who travel from all over the country to hold classes.

Brown said she purchased the studio from the previous owners in 2018 after teaching there.

“I am a retired state auditor for the state of Texas and Colorado and I needed a creative outlet,” Brown said.

Brown loves “the endless learning” of metalsmithing.

Brown said her style of jewelry is more natural, which was what she was interested in exploring.

“For somebody that’s a numbers cruncher I found that I gravitate to the organic because it gave me so much more freedom and a lot of times it mimics nature,” Brown said.

“I am always fascinated with not only textures but colors that we find in natural rocks and tree bark.”

Brown said her primary technique to do and teach is cuttlebone casting.

“It’s a very old technique. They use the cuttlefish. I learned that one in 2007 and I just gravitated to it because I love the texture that you find in that,” Brown said.

Brown said she was developing her own style to the technique by making the casting thinner which wasn’t common. This she said is how she also entered the world of teaching.

“I love teaching because I love to see people learning to be creative.

Miro said both her father and her brother are jewelers and the family owns a factory in Lebanon, which is where the business began.

The family opened their current location in 2017 and Miro said her father attended college in Colorado and wanted to return.

For Miro, the best aspects of what she does are the custom pieces the business creates and seeing it journey over the last several years.

“It’s just the custom part of it and being able to take something that has been in our family for a long time and evolve it over time,” she said.

Miro explained the business has evolved from bench jewelry to manufacturing and retail.

She said they make everything from wedding bands to engagement rings to necklaces to earrings.

“The nice thing about custom is you can work with any style because you’re creating it all,” she said. “It’s not like you’re a brand that you have specific styles that you’re working around.”

While versatile in design, Miro said she would describe the company’s pieces as classic and trendy.

Miro said she is not a jeweler but she works on the back end of the business in purchasing and finance.

“I like that it’s a family business that we’ve grown over the generations and we will have for future generations too,” she said.

I think being creative feeds our souls,” Brown said. “All of us need that in our lives in whatever form we have whether it’s cooking or painting.”

Brown said for those looking to venture into metal smithing the studio recommends that they take the 30-hour Metalsmithing course and then go from there. She said information on classes can be found on the studio’s website.

She said people will learn the basics including sawing techniques, filing, hammering and setting stones.

“For us teaching the beginning students all of these techniques they don’t have to buy a lot of equipment to get started at home and they can really express their creativity,” Brown said.

Denver Jewelry Studio also offers Open Studio where artisans can pay a monthly fee to utilize its tools.

New Denver resident and jewelry maker Jenny Foulkes said she recently moved to Colorado and found the studio.

“I needed bench space because my studio is not set up in my home and (Brown) has all the tools, all the solder stations and they’re open all day,” Foulkes said. “I like the warm welcoming atmosphere.”

Miro Jewelers: A family-owned business

Maira Miro, marketing and supplies of Miro Jewelers, said her family has been in the jewelry-making business for four generations.

Pay tribute to 10th Mountain Division at History Colorado

T

here are all kinds of stories that get forgotten in the fog of war, stories that need to be retold to give those who served the respect they deserve.

That’s the ethos behind Winter Warriors, the History Colorado Center’s,1200 Broadway in Denver, latest exhibition, which is a tribute to World War II’s 10th Mountain Division — the first American troops specifically trained for mountain warfare.

“Winter Warriors isn’t just about combat in World War II, it’s also a story of creativity, resilience, ingenuity and the human condition,” said Dr. Chris Juergens, Head of Curatorial Services and Anschutz Curator of Military History at History Colorado, in a provided statement.

“This exhibition puts a human face on the inhumanity of war, and highlights the price of freedom that US servicemen and women continue to be willing to pay on behalf of their fellow citizens.”

The exhibit opened on Veterans Day and truly takes an expansive and intimate look at the division, from their training at Camp Hale in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains through their breakthrough against the Nazi German Army in the mountains of Italy. The division paid the ultimate price during its time in the fight — about one-third of its members were wounded or killed.

• Pieces of art constructed, carved, and etched by soldiers at Camp Hale and on the front lines.

The aim of the exhibit is visitors come away with a greater appreciation of a story they may have never heard before.

Before winning election to a county leader seat, Partridge served on the Douglas County Planning Commission, the group of residents who advise Douglas’ elected leaders on property development in the county.

Once elected as an overall county commissioner, Partridge focused on several different areas of policy.

In road projects, he helped oversee the completion of the E-470 highway; the expansion of the Interstate 25 and Lincoln Avenue corridor; the added capacity and safety improvements on an 18-mile stretch of I-25, known as the gap; and the continued expansion and improvements of Highway 85, among other projects.

In 2017, Partridge, along with Commissioner Lora Thomas and then-Commissioner Dave Weaver, acquired Sandstone Ranch, the

2,038-acre property that was once destined for development but now will remain as a protected natural area and trail system in perpetuity.

Other open space projects during his term include the acquisitions of several properties, including Ditmars Ranch and the Martinez Property, and improvements to Prairie Canyon Ranch and Columbine Open Space.

In 2016, Partridge also aided in the creation of the Northwest Douglas County Water Project, a regional partnership that resulted in renewable water for existing homes and businesses in rural, northwest Douglas County.

During his tenure, the county contracted several helicopters and planes to respond to wildfires in the community.

Partridge was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2018 but continued serving as a commissioner.

During the county’s tribute to Partridge in January 2021, the commissioner’s battle with cancer was a major topic, as many friends and coworkers spoke about how he inspired them during that time.

“Your courage through your struggles with cancer were so admirable,” then-state Sen. Chris Holbert, R-Parker, had said. “I’m sure there were times of pain and struggle that you didn’t allow us to see but your smile, your confidence, your grace during that time was such an example for me, my family and I think all the people of Douglas County.”

Partridge had spoken to the crowd of participants at the end of the event, thanking his family, the county staff and other elected officials around the county and state for their support over the years.

“We’re all in this together,” he said.

“Thank you for the opportunity for eight years and God bless you all.”

Following one of the county’s darkest-ever days, when a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch left one student dead and eight others injured in May 2019, Partridge and his fellow commissioners allocated $10 million toward school safety.

He’s remembered as staying positive even when navigating politics.

“I’ll always remember that, after a hotly contested primary for commissioner in 2016 when both sitting commissioners, Roger Partridge and Dave Weaver, actively campaigned for my Republican opponent, Roger reached out to me and told me it was his job to make me a successful commissioner,” Thomas, one of the current commissioners, said.

Laydon, another one of the current commissioners, also praised his leadership.

“I had the honor of working with him daily through some of the most challenging times, from the STEM shooting to COVID-19. He taught me how to be a county commissioner and I would not be here if it weren’t for him,” Laydon said.

pieces. She has an appreciation for things that were made “back in the day” and has learned that others do, too.

This realization led her to start buying and reselling unique and vintage goods on digital forums like Mercari and Poshmark. But shipping glass was a “nightmare” and eventually she decided she wanted a brick-and-mortar store.

“You’re not paying shipping. You get to touch it, feel it,” Crossley said, describing to Colordado Community Media the in-person shopping experience she’s creating. “You get to try it on … if it doesn’t meet your

(expectation), you don’t have to deal with returning it. So I’m hoping that is a more attractive way to go.”

Although about 75% of Modern Vintage Marketplace’s 2,000-pluspiece inventory has been previously owned, the Crossleys are reluctant to use words like used or thrift or resale. Instead, they use the term “rescued” to describe their not-new merchandise. It’s a nod to the idea that they’ve saved quality products from a sorry fate languishing unappreciated at a charity shop or, worse, in a landfill.

Crossley said she put the 1,400-square-foot store together with shoppers in mind. She wanted the fitting room spacious and the restroom fun. (It’s tiki themed.) She picked a name for the place that

backdrop of a controversial proposal to pump about 22,000 acre-feet of water per year to Douglas County from the San Luis Valley in the southern part of the state.

An acre-foot is the equivalent of a one-foot-deep pool about the size of a football field. Renewable Water Resources is the private company that proposed the project.

Last year, county leaders Abe Laydon and Thomas joined together in deciding not to move forward with that project, while elected leader George Teal has continued to support it.

Tonner, one of the principals of Renewable Water Resources, attracted news media attention for throwing his hat in the ring to serve on the water commission.

Laydon and Teal supported appointing Tonner, who appeared for a public interview Oct. 13 via videoconferencing.

“RWR has no project in front of the county at this time, and the commission doesn’t exist (yet), so obviously we don’t have anything in front of the commission,” Tonner said at the time.

He also said he would recuse himself — or remove himself from participation — if any plans were to be pushed regarding RWR. Laydon said “it’s been much ado about nothing” that Tonner had brought a proposal to the county.

“I didn’t support it during the (American Rescue Plan Act) discussion, but that doesn’t mean there’s not room for people with big ideas that (can) bring people together,” Laydon said during the Nov. 6 meeting.

Laydon appeared to be referencing the county leaders’ decision in 2022 not to use federal ARPA dollars on the RWR project.

At the time, Laydon said his decision was because the county’s outside legal counsel concluded that the project was not eligible for federal COVID relief funds and recommended the county not participate.

In the recent November meeting, Laydon said that anyone on the water commission “has to check conflicts at the door.”

County’s picks More than 50 people applied to serve on the water commission. Many are current or former public officials, including some who serve on local water providers like the Parker Water District.

The county asked for applications

by Aug. 11 but later waived that deadline.

The water commission is expected to help create a plan regarding water supply and conservation, among other aspects of water in the county. It’ll consist of unpaid volunteers, according to the county.

The three elected county leaders planned to appoint three members per each “district,” or area, of the county, along with two selected “at large,” meaning from the county as a whole. (They later decided to allow people who aren’t residents or landowners in Douglas County to serve on the commission.)

They also plan to appoint “alternates” to serve in place of any main members if needed.

On top of that, the county plans to appoint a “technical advisory committee” of people with water expertise to help the water commission do its job.

The main members of the water commission, named on Nov. 6, include the following.

Representing District I, or northeast Douglas County:

• James Eklund, who had worked on the state’s water plan, according to county staff.(Removing the requirement for being a landowner or a resident of Douglas County allowed for choosing Eklund, who told county leaders he is “in the city and county of Denver.”)

• Jack Hilbert, formerly one of Douglas County’s elected leaders.

• Donald Langley, who serves on the Parker Water board.

• James Maras, a Perry Park Water and Sanitation District board member.

• Roger Hudson, a Castle Pines city councilmember.

Representing District III, or northwest Douglas County:

• Frank Johns, who said he has worked on various water plans for communities over the years. Johns serves on the board of the Centennial Water and Sanitation District, which serves Highlands Ranch.

• Evan Ela, a longtime water attorney.

• Harold Smethills, a member of the Dominion Water and Sanitation District board and a developer of the Sterling Ranch area in northwest Douglas County.

Appointees “at large,” meaning from

the county as a whole, include Tonner and Tricia Bernhardt, who has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Colorado State University and a master’s degree in environmental policy and management from the University of Denver, according to a LinkedIn page.

At the meeting, the motion — or proposal — to appoint the list of applicants passed 2-1 with Thomas opposed.

Thomas said she still preferred to appoint Kurt Walker instead of Smethills.

The motion to remove the requirement that all water commission members be residents or landowners in Douglas County passed unanimously.

Highlands Ranch proves to be dominant hub for boys cross country Rock Canyon, ThunderRidge make history at state

Despite the residency that Highlands Ranch-based schools in Class 5A appear to hold atop the state cross country rankings, a few still managed to make history this year.

Both Rock Canyon and ThunderRidge high schools finished higher than they ever have before, with the Jaguars winning their first state championship after a total score of 96, and the Grizzlies posting a score of 219, which earned them sixth place.

But the schools have historically looked up to Mountain Vista, who is often the favorite to win it all each year. For Rock Canyon, finally best-

ing Vista was a milestone to remember.

“I’m extremely proud of the boys.

They’re a very dedicated group,” said Rock Canyon coach Dan Davies.

“This all starts in the first week of June. We run twice a day, a few days a week, and they just were all bought in. They made the sacrifices they needed to.”

Davies was named the 2023 Coach of the Year in Class 5A. Last year, the Jaguars left one box unchecked, Davies said, which would become a catalyst for a revenge tour in 2023. The team won their league, won regionals, but fell short at state after a less-than-stellar performance that resulted in a fifthplace finish.

In 2022, Rock Canyon finished with a score of 189, two points shy of fourth-place Mountain Vista.

“That was their motivation: we’re going to check the last box this year,” Davies said. “Another confidencebooster was we went out to Wood-

The rivalry between Mountain Vista and Rock Canyon helps spur the region’s competition. Other schools like ThunderRidge are beginning to bridge the gap between some of the titans in the area, like Vista, Rock Canyon and Valor Christian.

“That was really sweet,” Davis said of beating Mountain Vista. “(Mountain Vista coach) Jonathan Dalby and I are good friends. We go way back. And we’ve gotten the best of them once in a while in league and regional, but it’s been a while at state since we’ve beaten them.”

But how deep do rivalries burn in Highlands Ranch?

“It is a rivalry,” Davies said, who has been at Rock Canyon for 21 years. “We push each other, and we

know that the state championship is going to through teams like Mountain Vista and Valor who are right down the road, too. And ThunderRidge had a really good team this year. They ran well, and we all know each other, the coaches. It definitely motivates our kids.”

Dalby said he can see every school in Highlands Ranch if he climbs to the top of Highlands Point Trail.

He’s been the coach at Mountain Vista since 2007, and said he and other area coaches share information and pointers between one another. That fiery blend of competition and collaboration likely helped shift the balance of power from schools in Boulder and Fort Collins to the Highlands Ranch area over the years.

They are rivals. But they’re also all good friends who want each other to succeed, he said.

Mountain Vista wins second round, to face Cherry Creek

Mountain Vista’s Jack Blais and his teammates took care of business against Castle View on Nov. 10. The win helps as the team prepares for a bigger challenge as the 5A state playoffs continue.

Blais and the Golden Eagles rolled to a 52-20 second round playoff win over the Sabercats.

Now - Mountain Vista will face four-time defending state champion Cherry Creek (11-0) in the quarterfinals on Nov. 17.

Mountain Vista (9-2) grabbed a 20-6 halftime advantage and then

pulled away in the second half and had a 49-14 lead with 4:44 late in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Castle View 32-13 in the final two quarters.

“I thought we struggled early,” said Vista head coach Garrett Looney.

“We had a pretty rough first half offensively but our defense played lights out. We made some adjustments at half and our kids responded and came out on fire in the second half.”

Blais, a 5-foot-7, 150 pound junior, rushed for 138 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also caught five passes.
