Some are proud of the money they raised to help others. Some look to new initiatives they launched. Others are excited about the relationships they began. The Littleton Independent asked them to share what’s on their minds for 2024.

Todd Lambert, who started his role as the superintendent of Littleton Public Schools in July, said he is proud of the relationships he has established in the district so far.

“I have enjoyed getting into all of the schools multiple times, as well as participating in many community events, where I get to see just how much this school community loves and supports our schools,” Lambert said. “I believe it is important for our families and taxpayers to see their superintendent actively involved in the work.”

Fixes considered for free Colorado preschool

With its new universal preschool program, Colorado joins a small but growing group of states that offer tuition-free preschool to all 4-year-olds.

So far, the program is popular with families, but there have been lots of bumps in the road, including three lawsuits against the state and the threat of a fourth. Some of the hiccups and headaches are usual new-program fare while others stem from the program’s rushed rollout by a new state agency.

Despite the problems, the $322 million program is a big deal.

Funded partly with a nicotine tax that Colorado voters passed easily, it’s cutting preschool tuition costs for thousands of families and helping more Colorado children get ready for kindergarten. Nearly 50,000 preschoolers are enrolled this year, more than double the number served in the state’s previous smaller preschool program.

Universal preschool has long been one of Gov. Jared Polis’ signature initiatives and its launch last August represents the second and harder half of the governor’s ambitious early childhood agenda.

Free full-day kindergarten, which kicked off in 2019, was the other major component.

Here’s a closer look at four key issues that have cropped up during the preschool program’s first six months.

A surge in demand led to tough decisions — and could again

More than 38,000 4-year-olds — 60% of that age group in the state — are enrolled in universal preschool this year. That’s about 8,000 more 4-year-olds than the state expected. In addition, the program includes more than 10,000 3-yearolds with risk factors.

The surge in demand meant state officials had to spread the money more thinly than planned. Last summer, just weeks before preschool was set to start, they told thousands of families that their children wouldn’t get free full-day preschool, only half-day, because there wasn’t enough funding.

Some of the students who lost out — low-income students and Eng-

lish language learners — are those who stand to benefit the most from extra preschool.

The state has already taken steps to remedy this problem for about 3,000 children next year, specifically those living in poverty. A proposed rule would prioritize those 4-year-olds for full-day classes. At the same time, the state expects even more 4-year-olds — as much as 64% of that group — to enroll in universal preschool next year. With next year’s state budget not yet set, the possibility of another surge in demand, and a slew of new rules under consideration, it’s unclear how far the money will go.

State leaders promised high-quality preschool but it will take years

One of the casualties in the race to stand up the new preschool program were rules governing program quality. State officials ran out of time to craft those rules, so they told participating preschools last spring to “keep doing what you’re doing.”

That means preschools are required to meet only basic health and safety standards this year, not other benchmarks of quality, such as small class sizes, highly trained teachers, and strong curriculum.

Some participating preschools already embrace high-quality practices, but not all do. That leaves the current universal preschool landscape a mish-mash of superior programs, mediocre programs, and everything in between.

Experts say quality standards matter because when preschool is done well, it can have short- and long-term benefits for children — boosting academic skills, increasing the likelihood of graduating from high school, and even improving adult job and health outcomes.

Colorado officials are planning to adopt some quality rules for the 2024-25 school year and a separate set of rules on preschool staff credentials for the 2025-26 school year. But with some likely to be phased in over time, four or more classes of universal preschoolers may graduate from the program before a binding set of quality requirements take hold.

Controversial Building Proposal in Lakewood Is About More Than Birds

The Dec. 24th Sunday Denver Post had a lengthy article on its business pages about a 412-unit apartment building being proposed by a Texas developer for a 5-acre site adjoining Belmar Park (see satellite image at right).

The focus of the article was on the birders who are fighting the project as best they can, given that the public and city council have no say in Lakewood when it comes to development.

That’s right — no say in any proposal to build on private property so long as it complies with zoning. The City Council doesn’t even have a say on subdividing land, although it’s a review body for appeals on major subdivisions. This project is on a single 5-acre owned parcel and, because it’s zoned multifamily, the owner could build a 12-story apartment or mixed-use building if he wanted. The developer, Kairoi Residential of San Antonio, is proposing a 6-story apartment building — still taller than most buildings in downtown Lakewood.

The City of Lakewood has ceded all regulation of such projects to its planning department. The planning director could, if he wanted, submit this project to the city’s planning commission for hearings and debate, but he has chosen not to, despite the controversy.

Anita Springsteen (below) served a 4year term on the Lakewood City Council through November. She decided not to run for re-election because the council has no power. Once she was told by the city attorney that council members are like citizens and that she had no more right to the information she was requesting than an ordinary citizen.

One such citizen, Mark Smith, made a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request for such information and was told that it would take 149 staff hours to produce the information and would cost him over $5,000.

Mark is a retired city planner and he said that he knows of no other jurisdiction which provides literally no public process for approving significant development proposals. The City of Golden has a process that could be a model for Lakewood and any other city. Check out

Lakewood has an ordinance requiring any developer to set aside parkland in proportion to 5 acres per 1,000 added population. For the Belmar Park development, that formula should require 3.5 acres, but the entire parcel is only 5 acres, so the director of community resources is allowing the developer to pay the city $254,545 per acre in lieu of that requirement. Again, no public or legislative say in that decision and, of course, no hearing. The planning commission would hold hearings; the planning director just decides.

Anita Springsteen moved that the city manager deny the in-lieu fee, but Mayor Paul said, “I’m not going to allow a vote on an illegal motion.” How is that?

It was unannounced, and no recording was made.

Instead, facilitator hired by the city took notes. Those notes did not include the names of any of the attendees.

The planning department’s web page for the project says bluntly, “This property has had this property right to build multistory uses for a long time, and courts have been quite clear that elected officials and cities can’t impinge or impede a private property owner’s property rights allowed under a ‘use by right.’ Courts have viewed efforts to do this as a ‘taking’ of property rights.”

Further, the web page says that “the proposed development will occur solely through the administrative process managed by the Planning Department.

In 2019, Lakewood’s voters approved the Strategic Growth Initiative which imposed a 1% growth limit, patterned after a similar law in Golden. That law also included a provision that projects of 40 units or more should go to the city council for approval, although that has not been followed, as far as I can tell.

In the wake of 2023 legislation outlawing growth limits statewide, the city council repealed the Strategic Growth Initiative and then re-passed it with a 2year sunset provision, meaning that it dies unless the council (or voters) vote to retain it. Curiously, the new law retained the 1% growth limit, but it sunsets along with the rest of the law in 2025. I asked why the 412-unit Belmar Park project doesn’t violate the 1% growth limit. It’s because the original designation of the downtown/Villa Italia district as “blighted” exempts that area from the limitation, even though it’s hardly blighted nowadays.

By now you’ve probably guessed that the majority of city council members are pro-growth or even pro-developer.

I interviewed Ramey Johnson, who served on Lakewood’s city council from 2010 to 2020, and she couldn’t think or any jurisdiction in which the governing body has ceded its authority over development to administrative staff the way Lakewood has. “It’s wrong,” she told me. She says that council has incrementally relinquished its power to administrative staff over many years.

She told how in 2003, in response to “angst” over CCU students living in residential areas, council passed an ordinance defining a “Student Living Unit.”

When the zoning ordinance was rewritten in 2012, Ramey noticed that definition had been deleted without pointing it out to the city council. Travis Parker, the director of planning, responded, “It wasn’t needed anymore.”

“The staff simply took out something that was voted by City Council,” Ramey said. “What else was deleted?”

Lakewood has among the lowest paid elected officials and highest paid staff of any city its size. City council members make $12,000, the mayor makes about $40,000, but the city manager makes about $350,000 (with benefits), and the department heads, like Parker, make over $200,000. Council members have no staff and no expense accounts. “We even have to buy the coffee for our ward meetings,” Anita Springsteen told me.

“This is a recipe for corruption,” She has studied the campaign finance disclosures of her fellow councilors and the mayor and told me that the lawyer representing the developer made a campaign contribution to Mayor Paul — and after the election, the chairman of her firm, Norman Brownstein, made a contribution to Paul’s campaign despite the fact that Paul was then term-limited.

No building permit has been issued yet for the Belmar Park development.

But nothing’s really stopping it.

Colorado faces lawsuits as church-state legal landscape changes

Although faith-based preschools make up a tiny fraction of Colorado’s universal preschool providers, they’ve played an outsize role in recent legal challenges over the program’s policies.

Two of three lawsuits the state is facing over universal preschool revolve around a non-discrimination agreement state officials asked participating preschools to sign. The agreement bans discrimination based on various factors, including religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity, but a Christian preschool in Chaffee County and two Catholic preschools in metro Denver sued over the provision last summer.

In October, a federal judge

blocked Colorado from withholding universal preschool funds or disciplining the Chaffee County preschool even though its policies on employee hiring and bathroom and pronoun use appear to violate the non-discrimination clause.

The lawsuit by the Catholic preschools, which is set to go to trial in early January, is broader. Like the Chaffee County case, it takes issue with the possibility of hiring staff who don’t reflect the schools’ religious tenets, but it also challenges the state’s mandate to accept all children and families regardless of religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The schools argue that enrolling all children conflicts with their religious beliefs and mission to provide a Catholic education.

There’s likely another battle over religion on the horizon. That’s because of a proposal to ban religious instruction during universal preschool classes starting next fall. The

state intended to put that ban into place from the outset, but didn’t follow through — allowing participating faith-based preschools to incorporate religion however they see fit this year. That omission, set Colorado up for a conspicuous mid-stream flip-flop. The conservative group Advance Colorado has already threatened to sue if the state goes through with the proposed ban, citing a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing public funding for religious education.

Class size debate is another symptom of funding challenges

This year, universal preschool classes can have up to 24 4-yearolds. That’s higher than most early childhood experts recommend, so the state has proposed capping the number at 20 starting next fall.

A related rule would require one staff member for every 10 children, down from one per 12 this year.

literally banked on having 24 students per class and 12 students per staff member. (The state pays about $6,000 per child for half-day preschool.) If the proposed changes are adopted, these providers stand to lose tens of thousands of dollars next year and some have said they would pull out of the program altogether.

The class size dilemma, especially in a field known for razor-thin margins and low pay, is another example of the tension between Colorado’s promise of high-quality preschool-for-all and the reality of limited funding. Although universal preschool’s $322 million price tag sounds like a hefty sum, preschool providers, school districts, and lawmakers have questioned whether it’s enough to support the program Colorado leaders envisioned.

The girl who ran away from foster care took off without her diabetes medication, adding an extra layer of concern for the investigators responsible for tracking her down.

The teenager in a Texas foster placement went from Austin to Houston to Dallas and across the state line to Oklahoma as investigators worried about potential medical complications and whether she would get lost in a sex-trafficking ring. Still, thanks to pinging cell phone signals and a team of investigators responsible for finding foster kids who run, the girl was found within two days.

“She was sent to the hospital immediately because her sugar levels were significantly high and she would have died,” said Damaris Nicholson, part of the special investigations unit at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. “We all know what happens when a youth in our care dies: the scrutiny, and the challenges and the ‘what could we have done.’”

But an Office of the Child Protection Ombudsman task force charged with finding out why so many kids are running away from out-of-home placements is looking at Texas for a possible solution. Texas’ child welfare division created its program in 2005 and it’s grown to include 300 investigators, many of them former law enforcement officers, responsible for finding kids across 254 counties.

The Colorado task force was created by the state legislature after a joint investigation by The Colorado Sun and 9News in 2021 into the number of runaways from youth residential treatment centers. The investigation, which involved the news agencies suing the state over the failure to release abuse and neglect information, found that two boys, 12-yearold Timothy Montoya and 15-yearold Andrew Potter, died after leaving Denver-area centers and getting hit by cars. The group will make final recommendations to the state legislature in October 2024.

The Texas absconder unit includes investigators who used to work as state troopers, homicide detectives, undercover narcotics officers and detectives who specialized in crimes against children, said Greg Eakens, the Texas department’s director of special investigations, as he answered questions from Colorado’s task force.

“You need to look for these kids like they’re your kids,” said Eakens, who was a police officer for 24 years before joining the child welfare division a decade ago. Or, “look for them like you’re looking for somebody that owes you money.”

“The children that run, they’re either running to something or from something, and I like to think that they’re running away from a good environment to something that’s not so great, so we need to find them and we need to get them back into care.”

Not all of the former law officers know how to connect with kids, but the ones who can are better at their jobs, he said. Willingness to work at night and on weekends is also a plus.

“Who is willing to answer their phone after 5? That’s a big deal.

When children are found, investigators attempt to conduct “recovery interviews,” trying to find out why they ran and whether any investigation into a foster home or a residential center is needed. “If they identify something that’s happened at the treatment center or foster home, that’s a great opportunity for us to pursue that,” he said, adding that his unit would involve law enforcement or child welfare caseworkers, depending on the allegations.

“We can’t make the children talk to us, so if we go in there and they’re still coming down if they’re on substances or just anxiety or whatever, and they tell us where to go, we do.

But then we’re coming back and trying to re-engage them for that conversation,” Eakens said. He will tell them, “I’m probably gonna be back in a day or two. You want me to bring you anything?”

“Sometimes that’s as simple as a Dr. Pepper.”

The Texas unit is responsible for finding kids who are in the state’s custody, including in foster placements, but the unit will also look for children who run away because child welfare caseworkers are coming to the door of their biological parents’ home. A small percentage of the children and teens in foster care are generating the majority of the runaway reports, Desparrois said. “It’s repeat runs,” he said. “They often look like running to the 7-Eleven and asking people for cigarettes and stuff like that and then they come back.”

He suggested the group consider a more narrow approach, such as launching an investigative unit only after young people in foster care had been gone for at least a couple of days. Exceptions could include kids with medical needs and those who are suicidal, he said.

Colorado had about 30 young people in the past year whose child welfare cases were closed because they ran away and were not found, according to Department of Human Services data. But task force members say the data is incomplete and the state is failing to keep track of how long kids are missing and why they ran away.

In Texas, 1,334 children went missing from foster placements last year.

Of those, 1,219 were recovered. Texas data shows that 131 were victimized in some way while they were missing from care, including 56 who were sex trafficked.

Some members of the Colorado task force questioned whether such a unit should exist as part of the Colorado Department of Human Services, which includes child welfare, or if it should act as a law enforcement unit housed elsewhere in state government.

Dennis Desparrois, with the state child welfare division, said department leadership is “skeptical” about creating an absconder unit.

He questioned whether such a unit would have prevented the deaths of the two boys who ran away from Denver-area residential centers and were struck by vehicles.

“This thing would have not helped Timothy Montoya and it wouldn’t have helped the other youth that ran,” he said. “A huge chunk of our runaways are very short-term runaways, so this team wouldn’t be able to intervene fast enough. A majority of our runaways … are back at the facility before you could even implement this team.”

Task force member Brian Cotter, a Denver police sergeant, said law enforcement should lead the absconder unit if Colorado creates one. To succeed, the child welfare division would need to share data with law officers, he said. “I don’t think you can credibly say that there’s a downside to dedicating resources to these kids that are fleeing,” he said. “If there is a downside, I think it might be that there’s a perception of ‘the runaway

At Arapahoe Community College, President Stephanie Fujii said she is proud of the institution’s ability to deliver on financial investments it received.

Specifically, she said she was proud of the remodel of the Health Innovations Center and the delivery of college instruction in partnership with Douglas County School District at their Legacy Campus.

In 2024, Fujii said she wants to see ACC continue to build a stronger sense of community and belonging for faculty, staff and students.

“COVID isolated us and we need to be intentional in how we adapt to facilitate truly collaborative and supportive teaching and working environments for all,” she said.

She said the college also aims to develop and create a sustainable workforce pipeline plan for an education and training center for aerospace in 2024.

Government

Reflecting on 2023, Littleton Mayor Kyle Schlachter said he was proud of the results of two ballot measures that went in front of voters.

In March, a citizen-initiated ballot question proposed changes to the city charter’s sections about initiatives and referendums. With over 70% of voters opposing the measure, it failed in the special election.

In November, voters approved ballot measure 3K, which asked them to allow Littleton to retain about $6 million in extra revenue generated by the 3A sales tax and other city revenue sources in 2022.

Voters approved the 3A sales tax in 2021 to fund capital improvement projects.

But because the city underestimated how much money it would receive from the new tax and other revenue sources in 2022, the Taxpay-

Schlachter said the results showed him that “most voters approve of the direction of the city.”

Schlachter has a resolution for 2024.

“I am focused on making meaningful improvements to our bike and pedestrian safety and mobility network,” he said. “Providing safe opportunities for people to get around on two wheels or two feet will benefit everyone in our community.”

In recent months, many community members have been calling for improvements to bike and pedestrian infrastructure, in the wake of the death of a 13-year-old who was killed when he was hit by a car while riding his bike to school in October.

Schlachter, a cyclist himself, has advocated for these changes in the past and hopes to carry these goals forward in 2024.

Chief Doug Stephens, of the Littleton Police Department, also has his eyes set on safety in 2024.

With increased funding from the city, he said the department will expand its capabilities in focusing on proactive safety.

“The department is adding staff to provide more consistent proactive services to address mental health crises, homelessness and traffic safety,” he said. “Our goal for (2024) is to hire,

train and deploy additional high-quality staff as quickly as reasonably possible so we can enhance these proactive programs and make an even more positive impact on Littleton community safety and quality of life.”

The city’s budget this year provided about $2 million to go towards proactive policing measures, including hiring seven police officers, one detective and two dispatchers.

In reflecting on 2023, Stephens highlighted a moment of national recognition.

In May, President Biden awarded police Cpl. Jeff Farmer with the National Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor for his actions in saving the life of fellow Littleton officer David Snook in September 2021.

“I was extremely proud to accompany Cpl. Jeff Farmer and his family to the White House in May,” Stephens said. “Jeff was one of only eight recipients from throughout the nation to receive the medal this year and the first-ever Colorado recipient.”

Business

In 2023, many new businesses — from a mobility business to a botanical shop — opened in Littleton.

On top of that, restaurants and taprooms opened their doors, adding dining and social options to the community.

Korri Lundock, who started as the executive director

of the Littleton Business Chamber in 2022, said she is proud of the relationships and collaborative efforts the chamber fostered in 2023.

At the chamber’s first Holiday Giving Gala in December, the group raised more than $13,000 to support the Littleton Police Department’s proactive policing efforts.

The chamber increased its membership by 150 businesses, Lundock said, and they look forward to working with more local businesses as 2024 begins.

She also said the chamber started several committees that led to its first Littleton Restaurant Week and its upcoming first Women in Leadership Conference, which is set to take place in April.

In 2024, Lundock said the chamber hopes to support businesses through increasing chamber membership and member-directed training programs. They also hope to develop a Young Professionals Network and an Employment Health and Wellness Event.

“Personally, I am thrilled that I was given the opportunity to take (the chamber) to this next level,” Lundock said. “My personal goal for 2024 is to listen more and talk less. To let our chamber volunteers take over our committees and create an organization that will be self-sustaining, influential and (voice) the concerns of business.”

From World War II practice bombs to antique mannequins and everything in between, KW Donaldson thinks “far outside the box” when creating what he calls “preservation art” pieces.

“I take antiquities of all different kinds and turn them into, in most cases, functional art,” said Donaldson, an Englewood resident since 1985.

He grew up in Tolland, Connecticut, and has always loved antiques and “treasure hunting.”

Donaldson said his hometown was made up of vast farmland that had trash dumps he would explore.

“So I would go out and try to find these dumps ... and I’d start digging and I’d find all kinds of antique stuff,” he said.

But the artist began creating his pieces only about five years ago, after he observed how antiques would either be thrown away or sitting on shelves at thrift stores such as the ARC in Littleton.

People are often fascinated by his work and refer to it as repurposing.

However, Donaldson said that is not what he’s doing.

He strives to maintain each object’s historical essence.

“I am preserving these pieces of our industrial history and making them

into something new and interesting,” Donaldson said. “I try not to alter them in any way, shape or form.”

Rather than welding or brazing his pieces, he uses nuts, bolts or screws to ensure the items remain authentic.

Some of his pieces can be taken apart and still be used for their intended purpose, he said.

“When I find pieces like a Model T horn or a great, big, long Duesenberg horn and people look at me like I’m weird when I do it, but I go, ‘OK you were once a Model T horn and you served your purpose for all those years. Now what do you want to be?”’

Donaldson said.

Donaldson said as strange as it sounds, the pieces he uses in his art speak to him. He said he’ll often lay all of the pieces out until an idea comes to him and he’s inspired on how to put all of them together.

“Sometimes the idea comes just like that. Sometimes I have to look at them before that idea comes to my mind,” Donaldson said. “Other pieces I’ll get from ARC or at a yard sale and I’ll see the whole piece right away.”

He explained that once he has an idea, he sketches a blueprint of how it will be constructed.

“Things were made so much better,” Donaldson said. “They were made to last. So why not have them last? I’m SEE ARTIST, P31

he holy season of Advent dawns amid familiar carols echoing through frost-kissed mornings.

In this hushed space of yearning hearts, we sweep away the holiday frenzy and rediscovWINNING er an ageless, boundless love WORDS born in candlelit shadows.

Advent love manifests not in flashy fanfare but whispering solitude. We kindle joyful anticipation of Christ’s arrival by embracing sacred stillness. In early morning darkness, we wrap a woolen blanket around our shoulders and light a single candle, bathing Michael Norton the room in warm glow as dawn approaches. We drink in the silence, opening our whole being to wonder. Stillness reorients us from dullness to breathless expectation.

Advent love arrives in hushed tones when we unclutter crowded schedules and overstuffed hearts. It emerges in stillness as we behold Love’s luminous mystery. Like the solitary bright star shining through Bethlehem skies beckoning earthly kings, Infinite Love patiently waits to be found, recognized and adored in unlikely places by childlike faith.

When storms rage and dreams lie in shards, love often feels impossible to muster.

But somewhere in our soul, embers of hope still smolder. And hope-inspired love can reignite even the most broken heart. Where hope persists, radical love follows.

Hope sees glimmers that despair shades. It believes restoration waits around the bend, no matter how far we’ve fallen. Hope whispers, “All things are possible still.” It holds us in moments we cannot hold ourselves.

And hope-rooted love is fearless, raging against injustice rather than retreating into complacency. It loves those deemed unlovable, the marginalized, the oppressed, the sick, the forgotten. It loves wildly and wastefully like its supply is endless because hope ensures love’s well never runs dry. The audacious love that is fuled by hope speaks truth with grace, not judgment. It weeps with the grieving and celebrates the victorious.

The love that hope kindles is generous and selfless. It notices loneliness in a crowded room and nudges someone to extend an invitation. It rallies volunteers to rebuild a family’s storm-ravaged home. It patiently tutors struggling students. It always responds to need with compassion.

And in the process, hope-inspired love transforms its own wounded heart. As we lift

others’ loads, our shoulders feel lighter too.

Serving cures self-pity. Washing strangers’ callused feet softens our calluses. Lifting the lowly elevates our whole being. Love powered by audacious hope awakens purpose and deep joy. It knows endless tomorrows await beyond today’s tears. With hope as its north star, love finds its way home.

In life’s stormiest seasons when foundations crumble, Paul urges us to cling to faith, hope and love, three pillars of spiritual strength. While each matters greatly, he declares love supreme: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Why does love reign supreme?

Love outlasts because love bears all things.

When grief shreds our heart or betrayal stabs our back, love weeps alongside us yet refuses to let pain poison its purpose. When we want to raise our fists in rage, love keeps our arms open. Its flame never flickers.

Love uplifts because love believes all things. When crushed dreams and failed plans shatter our optimism, love gently whispers, “I still see your potential. Purpose awaits.” When we hang our head in shame, love lifts our chin, assuring, “You are forever worthy.” Its eyes never dim.

Love empowers because love hopes all things. When challenging circumstances threaten to snuff out our hope, love fans its fiery embers. “There is more unfolding,” love insists. “You were made to weather this storm.” When we despair of better days, love stands resolute, declaring, “Morning comes.

Joy awakens.”

Faith, hope and love — these three dance in harmony when rooted in God’s heart. But love leads the way. Its reach is boundless, its fire unquenchable, its vision unclouded by storms. Love bears, believes, and hopes without end.

That is why when all else fades, love remains. When human bonds break, love’s loyalty persists. When even faith and hope waver, love stands firm as our anchor. It is the greatest gift heaven offers. Love never fails.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Loretta Justine Flanagan, who passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 82 in Littleton, Colorado. Loretta was a loving mother, grandmother, and devoted caregiver who dedicated her life to her family and the service of others.

To pay tribute to Loretta’s remarkable life, a funeral will be held on Monday, January 8, BRONSTEIN

2023, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Littleton, Colorado. The proceedings will begin with a Rosary at 10:15 a.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass. A reception will be held afterward, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and all who knew Loretta to come together and celebrate her life.

As the new year kicks off, many people are diving into their resolutions with reckless abandon. Maybe yours is to exercise more, listen better or go on that vacation you’ve been saving up for. Or maybe, you have decided this will be the year you start cooking more.

Since moving to Colorado in 2022, I have become an avid cook. I love trying new recipes and having dinner parties with my friends.

This is really no surprise, since I grew up in a family whose favorite way to spend time together was cooking. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of all of us crammed into our tiny alley kitchen, chopping, slicing, mixing, simmering and laughing together.

As my gift to you at the start of this year, I have gathered a few of my family’s favorite recipes from 2023.

Please use these to fulfill your resolutions and utilize the kitchen toys you got for Christmas — and support local businesses while doing it!

Creamy Thai Sweet Potato Curry from Pinch of Yum

Curry is always one of my favorite go-to cozy meals, especially during colder months. I usually improvise my curries, but this recipe is pretty close to what I normally make. I love including sweet potatoes for some

extra vitamins and flavor. Always remember to top with peanuts and lime! Pair this meal with a Chardonnay from Neighborhood Wine & Spirits and you’ll be all set for a perfectly-rounded meal.

Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding from Spicy Southern Kitchen

This dessert came together spontaneously one night after my friends had a ton of leftover rice from the dinner we had made. For ours, we used eggnog instead of milk, and we added some nutmeg and cardamom with the cinnamon. For great spices, stop by Savory Spice Shop or Penzeys Spices on Main Street in Littleton — you may find an even better combination of spices to include in this dish. To add an extra kick for adults, I highly recommend adding some bourbon to this.

With great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved mother, Blanche Bronstein, born on September 20th, 1929, in Chicago, IL. Blanche passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on December 13th, 2023 in Lynnwood, WA. Blanche spent her childhood years living in Chicago and during her high school years, often worked in her parents’ grocery store on the North Side. After graduating from Senn High School, Blanche attended the University of IL and decided to pursue a career in Education. Blanche spent most of her life after college in Colorado where she raised her three children. She taught until her eighties in the Littleton School District where she tutored children at risk.

Blanche also spent several years working in commercial real estate in Cherry Creek.

She is fondly remembered for driving

horse trailers, playing tennis, endless backgammon and solitaire, playing bridge and dancing. Blanche cultivated friendships that lasted for decades, and always enjoyed a good party. Blanche is survived by her children, Bess Bronstein, Daniel (Dyan) Bronstein, and Andrew (Louise) Bronstein, four grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

PUTTING THEIR SOULS INTO SOLES Shoeshining and repairs bring purpose to local craftsmen

n 1838, photographer Louis Daguerre captured what is often cited as the first-ever photograph of a person.

The black-and-white image shows buildings and trees lining a cobblestone street in Paris. Although it was a busy street, the length of the photographic exposure rendered the passersby and horse traffic invisible in the final image.

But on that spring day more than 185 years ago, two individuals remained still enough to show up in the photo. In the bottom left-hand corner, on the sidewalk near the street, one person polishes another’s shoes.

The photograph unexpectedly became a time capsule of the age-old tradition of shoeshining, which although less common than it once was, continues to be an indispensable part of some people’s personal and professional routines.

From Denver to Centennial, several shoeshine and shoe repair craftsmen aim to make their customers’ lives sparkle by pro-

viding service, beauty and powerful interpersonal connections.

The skill of shoe repair

For Edward Koinov, the owner of Re-Nu Shoe Repair in Centennial, business is buzzing.

Over the course of an hour one Friday in December, customers entered Koinov’s shop in a continuous stream — asking him for advice, getting quotes or picking up their shoes.

In addition to shining, Koinov changes soles, replaces heels, adds stitching, makes color corrections and sometimes even adds embellishments.

And because he knows what he’s doing with leather, people often bring in other items, like purses and bags.

“I’ll never say no,” he said, unless a customer requests an impossible repair. “Most of them, I fix.”

Koinov’s space reflects the popularity of his service, which seems to have bounced back after a lull during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of shoes sit on shelves, awaiting repairs and pickups.

And despite rising costs of supplies, Koinov is making things work. He said he works on about 25 pairs of shoes per day, and business is especially busy in the winter.

“People love shoes,” he said.

Koinov, who grew up in Russia, learned to make shoes from scratch in a factory when he was 17 years old.

In 1989, he moved to New York City and later relocated to Colorado for the weather and the mountains, he said.

Previous to his shoe shop, Koinov opened a car dealership and a Russian restaurant in the metro Denver area. He said he lost money from both of these endeavors and decided to go back to his roots in the shoe business.

When asked why shoes are interesting to him, Koinov joked, “What am I going to be, a lawyer?”

He said that people are good at different things — and for him, it’s always been shoes.

“This is not one year, two years to learn this job,” he said. “This job is years (and) years. You need to know how to fix the shoes. You need to know this job.”

The ‘secret recipe’

North of Centennial, another tenured shoe professional, Vincent Wayne Robinson, owns his own shoeshining company in Denver.

Like Koinov, Robinson fell into the shoe business as a teenager.

He was working with a carpenter on converting a grocery store into a nightclub in Oklahoma City in the 1970s.

At 17 years old, Robinson wanted to attend the nightclub once it opened — but he knew he was too young to get in. So when chatting with the club owner one day during construction, he had what he calls a “vision.”

Out of the blue, he asked the owner if he had ever considered having a shoeshine stand in the club.

“The thought came from me, out of nowhere,” he said. “I felt like something spoke through me, because it was nothing I was conscious of. I know that’s crazy, but that’s the way it was.”

Robinson had no experience in shining shoes, but he told the club owner that he could provide the service. He asked his cousin, a reliably confident person, to join him in the endeavor.

With little to no experience, the two of them started a gig shining

“I started figuring it out — it became a nice little hustle,” Robinson said. “But it didn’t come to a business until I moved to Colorado.”

In the early 2000s, Robinson started working at the shoeshine stand at Denver International Airport.

There, he said, he learned how to shine professionally.

“I learned so much from the owner,” he said. “And that’s where the love began.”

After that, Robinson decided to open up his own company, Vincent’s Shoe Shine of Cherry Creek, which now operates out of a space on Ogden Street in Denver, among other locations.

The process of shining a shoe, Robinson said, is a “secret recipe” of cleaning, conditioning, waterproofing and “spit-shining.” In the past, people would use saliva for the shining part of the process — but these days, Robinson said “spitshining” involves using a water mist and a specific motion with a rag.

He said shoeshining is an art, and that it’s an important process to add longevity to leather shoes.

“Some people, they may have a pair of shoes that they can’t really

find again,” he said. “We come in a situation where it’s their grandfather’s shoe, it’s their mom’s shoe … it’s just an item that they really love and cherish.”

Robinson said the way a person looks at the shoeshining business is important, and people who look at it wrong may struggle to stay afloat in it.

“I choose to look at it from the same point of view that I learned from somebody who understood the fiber of just having a shoeshine in their business,” he said. “They know it’s for a certain customer — it won’t be for everybody — but that certain customer is definitely going to be a person who has a lot of pride in what they do.”

Connecting across a shoeshine stand

Even more than an art form, shoeshining is a valuable social experience for some in the business.

Starting as close family friends, Robinson trained Dominick Martinez in shoeshining. They started working together after Martinez finished high school, and it’s been an important part of Martinez’s life since then.

“I’m a person that’s capable …

of doing anything,” Martinez said.

“But I kinda never left this situation … It’s always come back around full circle to this.”

For him, the purpose of shoeshining has little to do with shoes. Instead, it’s about the people.

“Sometimes, some people like that one-on-one kind of interaction,” he said. “It’s refreshing. It’s not about what you pay for, it’s about what you get in the process.”

He compared the shoeshining experience to going to a barbershop or a beauty salon — where people come partially for the service itself, but largely for the connection with the person providing it.

He said this human connection is something that artificial intelligence can’t take away.

“There’s a reason why you need that interaction,” he said. “It don’t matter what’s going on behind that interaction — but our problem is we don’t let that interaction happen anymore, and this lets the interaction happen. You can’t put a price on that.”

Robinson, who also said the customers are his favorite part of the job, said he hopes his company can help share the tradition of shoeshining.

At his shop in Denver, he teaches courses to train the next generation of shiners.

“I started out with my kids, we started out with (Martinez’s) kids,” he said. “Now, we’re gonna manufacture it into a classroom situation.”

Martinez added that shoeshining is a trade that can help young individuals get on their feet and support themselves.

“We always need those trades and those personal interactions,” he said.

Robinson said shoeshining is a great way to teach kids about creating things and making money at a young age.

“At the end of the day, we want to see fathers and sons sitting in their garage, doing these things together, and just keep putting (relationships) between people,” he said.

“Everybody has to walk around with shoes.”

When reflecting on the tradition, Martinez referenced the early French photograph of shoeshining.

“This came a long time before us and it’s gonna be here a whole lot longer,” he said. “And there’s a reason for that … The interactions are something different.”

The gift of a lifetime for active Bear Mountain runner

It’s a holiday tale tinged in shades of The Grinch. Except this heartwarming story is true. And unlike the green curmudgeon who lived high atop a lonely peak, Craig McCormack is a 52-year-old ultra runner and father of two who lives on Evergreen’s Bear Mountain.

His heart was not too small. Unbeknownst to McCormack, it had a hole in it. Likely a congenital defect, it existed — unnoticed — for 52 years until McCormack suffered a stroke.

Thanks to a Thornton doctor, inspired in his career by a family history of heart disease, McCormack’s heart is now whole. Dr. Qaisar Khan and his team performed the successful surgery at North Suburban Medical Center Dec. 12.

“I’m ready for the holidays, and I’m going to start running again,” he said. “My kids are happy. They keep telling me to slow down, but I’m a stubborn old man and I feel so good.”

It’s a world apart from how McCormack felt in the small hours of Aug. 24.

“I got up and couldn’t feel my left arm and leg, and I was slurring,” he said. “It felt very weird.”

An MRI showed McCormack had suffered a stroke.

“I’m pretty active, so it was a bit of a shock,” he said. “I had no idea at the time what had caused it,” he said.

“But I was more worried about my kids at the time and focused on them. You start thinking about your living will, the financial side of things.”

Enter Dr. Khan

Shortly after his stroke, McCormack met a physician’s assistant at an Evergreen hikers’ gathering who works for Dr. Khan, an interventional cardiologist with Thornton’s Advanced Heart and Vein Center. When he heard McCormack’s story, the assistant urged him to see Dr. Khan.

“A young guy who’s otherwise very active shouldn’t have a stroke,” Dr.

Khan said. “There has to be a reason.

Most likely it’s a hole in the heart.

“And if it happened once, it’s going to happen again. It’s basically a ticking time bomb. The next event could be life-threatening or complete disability. It needs to be closed.”

Khan’s passion for heart care stems from heart disease in his own family. His grandfather suffered a fatal heart attack at 48. His father also had a heart attack at 52 but survives today, with the help of three stints.

“Almost everybody in my family has heart disease,” Khan said. “But when my grandfather had his heart attack, they didn’t have stints. That’s how my dad is alive, and it’s why I think a lot of us are living longer.”

A hole in the heart is a surprisingly common issue. Also known as a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), it’s a hole between the upper chambers of the heart. Everyone has one in utero — it allows circulation while a fetus is in the womb — but most close 2-3 minutes after birth.

For about 25% of people, that doesn’t happen. And for most of them, the condition never causes a problem, or is even a known condition. But for patients like McCormack, who suffer a mild stroke or symptoms like severe shortness of breath, action needs to be taken.

The life-changing procedure to repair the hole is typically done in less than an hour.

“To me, the most important thing is that you can prevent another stroke,” Dr. Khan said. “Imagine someone who has another 40-plus years to live, suffering a stroke and living those years with a physical

disability, perhaps not even being able to talk. The burden of stroke on our society is huge.”

Khan conducts about 20 such surgeries each year. Each is gratifying.

“Somebody saying thank you is the biggest reward,” he said. “And if you can change somebody’s quality of life, allow someone to continue having a quality of life, that is priceless.

That’s why I get up in the morning.”

Looking to the New Year

McCormack, who was conscious and watched Dr. Khan and his team perform his surgery, left the hospital feeling “amazing.” He continues to feel that way.

“I got dressed, left, went and had sushi and Starbucks, stopped at Home Depot and then went home,” he said. “I get yelled at because I should be lying in bed, taking it easy, but I feel normal and I just want to do things outside.”

Instead of focusing on end-of-life preparations, McCormack is now planning the next phase of his life.

While he’s already checked off 50- and 100-mile runs as well as the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) — a double crossing of the Canyon known as one of the most famous ultramarathon routes in the world — there’s a world-renowned challenge closer to home he aims to conquer as well.

“The Leadville 100 is on my bucket list before I turn 60,’” he said, referring to a 100-mile mountain trail run known for its ruggedness and dramatic ascents and descents. “I plan to start running again in the spring.

“It’s definitely a good start to 2024.”

working on one (piece) right now that’s 100 years old already, and why not turn it into something that people can enjoy and have around for another 100 years?”

It can sometimes take him months to make a single creation.

Donaldson served in the U.S. Marine Corps and then worked for the United States Postal Service. He’s retired now.

He said some people love his work and are fascinated by his concepts and purpose.

While he appreciates the praise, he wishes more people would take his pieces home.

Some of his creations are completed with his son Morrigen Donaldson, who inherited his father’s passion and talent for art.

“He’s a brilliant artist. I mean this guy’s talent in photography and in graphic design,” Donaldson said.

Morrigen is into music, graphite drawing and really loves photography.

“I desire to capture the beauty in life that’s dying in our world. So

whether that be astrophotography to boudoir,” Morrigen said.

Morrigen is currently pursuing a career in cinematography and said he maintains a YouTube channel where he discusses mental health.

Morrigen’s channel and work can be found under Killed Fox Design.

Morrigen said he has learned a lot from his father, including perseverance and determination.

“He truly embodied a phrase that I’ve been working on with him for almost a decade now,” Morrigen said. “‘Don’t let the darkness consume you to the point that you can’t see the light.”’

Morrigen said he has seen his father’s passion, fire and drive since he started creating his art.

“I hope that more people will be able to appreciate what he does because sadly for a lot of people in our modern society it’s easier to live the Ikea life,” Morrigen said. “I hope here soon, with the resurrection of older times, more and more people will be able to look at the art that he creates and truly appreciate it for what it is.”
