The Arapahoe County Detention Center was built in 1986 to hold 386 inmates.

Today, there are upwards of 1,000 people in the jail.

To better serve this population, Arapahoe County is embarking on a $46 million project to add more space for medical and behavioral health care and to increase the capacity of the kitchen and laundry spaces.

El Tepehuan to close after 45 years in Englewood Beloved owner Graciela Corral will retire, aims to sell business

Popular restaurant El Tepehuan on Broadway will close on Dec. 31 after maintaining a presence in downtown Englewood since 1978.

After 45 years of business at two different locations, well-known Englewood restaurant El Tepehuan will close its doors on Dec. 31.

Located at 3495 S. Broadway, the building that houses El Tepehuan and the business itself are being sold by owner Graciela Corral, who is retiring after running the restaurant for 36 years.

Graciela’s son, Miguel Corral, said El Tepehaun first opened its doors in 1978 at a different location on Broadway and his father, Jose Corral, was the original owner.

“Many still remember him fondly as he brought the warmth of Mexican culture and delicious Mexican food to Englewood,” Miguel said.

“In 1987 he passed away in a car accident and that’s when my mom took over.”

The Arapahoe County assessor’s website shows Graciela purchased the restaurant’s current location in July 2014 and expanded the business.

“This year my mom is retiring and we’re in the process of finishing sell-

ing the building and my mom is in the process of talking to a potential buyer for the business itself, but that will be at a different location,” Miguel said.

Graciela told the Englewood Herald during an interview where she spoke Spanish, translated by her son, that she knew it was her time to retire this year as she wants to spend more time with family and friends.

The business owner says she wanted to carry on the legacy of her late husband when she decided to take over the restaurant, and she has loved the community El Tepehuan has built over the years.

“I loved the pleasure of continuing to give good food to the community and being a presence in the community,” Graciela said. “Being able to give work to other people. That also gave me personal joy to help other people out and the honor of achieving the American dream.”

Graciela said for the last 36 years of her operation of the restaurant, the community response to El Tepehuan has been positive and supportive.

“In general the community has always been very supportive of the restaurant and very enthusiastic,” Graciela said. “Regarding my retirement it has definitely been a mixed response.”

Over at a Denver-area Red Robin restaurant, the Keep It Simple burger costs $13.49, or nearly $15 with tax.

That’s up 31% in a little more than three years, based on old menus posted at restaurant review site, Yelp.com, showing the same nofrills burger at $10.29 in May 2020.

It’s not just Red Robin. A lot of burger joints are getting unwanted attention because of their higher prices, with some consumers sharing their shock on social media. It’s also not just burgers. The cost of eating out at a restaurant in Colorado has increased 28.2% since January 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index. Menu prices have gone up at most Colorado eateries, and restaurant owners don’t really like to talk about it.

But one can still find a solid burger at a full-service restaurant for under $15. The Cricket Burger at The

The Colorado Restaurant Association & Foundation gets a lot more specific. Earlier this year, the industry group, which has 4,900 member restaurants, put together its own guide to why the price of an average burger has increased to $15.

Restaurants have seen an increase of 54% in the cost of labor, 55% for utilities and 20% for equipment and maintenance. The price of beef? Up 43%. Cheese? Up 79%. And lettuce?

Littleton addresses pedestrian, bicycle safety solutions

At a recent meeting, the Littleton council chambers were packed with people wearing red — the favorite color of a 13-year-old student who was killed when he was hit by a car while riding his bike to school.

At the Nov. 28 study session, city council members and staff held a lengthy discussion about issues surrounding bicycle and pedestrian safety in the city.

The conversation was spurred by recent calls for safer bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the wake of the student’s death and a recent pedestrian fatality.

Public Works Director Keith Reester outlined the city’s investments in multimodal infrastructure and outlined steps that could be taken to address the growing safety concerns.

Multimodal infrastructure addresses the needs of various transportation types, including cars, bicycles and pedestrians.

Current projects and programs

In 2011, the city created its first and only bicycle and pedestrian master plan, Reester said. At the time, the main goal was to identify bicycle and pedestrian routes.

The next clear evaluation of the city’s bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure happened in 2019, when the city council approved the Transportation Master Plan. The document includes a chapter about “active transportation,” which lists goals and priorities for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Reester said about 47% of the active transportation projects from the plan have made progress since 2019 and 12 have been completed.

He highlighted the bike lanes on Windermere Street, the pedestrian signal at the intersection of Federal Boulevard and Berry Avenue and the downtown pedestrian raised crossing.

Reester also explained the city’s neighborhood traffic calming program, where citizens can contact the city about ongoing safety issues in local neighborhoods.

Reester said when a report is filed, city staff analyzes the requests to create data-driven solutions.

Reester said there are limitations to bicycle and pedestrian improvements, including funding, staffing, equipment, right-of-way constraints, parking tradeoffs and maintenance.

The city’s 2024 budget includes $8 million for bicycle and pedestrian projects, Reester said.

Although his department requested $100,000 for traffic calming initiatives, the 2024 budget includes only $25,000 for the program, Reester said.

The transportation team within the public works department has four staff members and four traffic operations crew members.

“Our biggest challenge is our ability to deliver the projects because of staffing levels,” Reester said.

The city is working with Littleton Public Schools on a grant-funded “Safe Routes to Schools” program to identify routes for students who walk and bike to school. Reester said the city would like the district to add a specific staff member or point person to help coordinate the project.

District 2 Councilmember Robert Reichardt, liaison to the district, said he would discuss the desire for this point person with the district.

Enforcement versus infrastructure

District 1 Councilmember Patrick Driscoll said he thinks enforcement is the solution to traffic safety issues.

“Ever since COVID, people have just felt like there’s no speed limit,” he said. “I think we really need to put pressure on the police enforcement, to enforce the speed limit.”

Reichardt said he thinks the city is moving in the right direction by investing in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, but he does not see how infrastructure changes could have prevented the recent deaths. He said he is open to education on this front.

He said he would like to see the city increase traffic enforcement for cars at crosswalks and education about crosswalks so pedestrians can cross the street safely.

Mayor Kyle Schlachter said enforcement may be part of the solution, but it’s not the only solution.

He said he wants to see protected bike lanes, especially on major streets near schools and parks, such as South Prince Street, South Windermere Street, South Elati Street, West Caley Avenue and others.

“Paint’s not protection. It’s not a low-stress road to go on,” he said. “I would like to see those major collectors have protected bike lanes — not just paint, not just buffer — but actual, protected bike lanes.”

At-Large Councilmember Pam Grove said the city should consider the desire of drivers when considering infrastructure changes.

“That’s why we need her in the house. We need her to bring both sides of the aisle together, to continue to expand and improve our behavioral health care system in this state.”

Arapahoe County Commissioner Carrie Warren-Gully said Rydin knows how to build partnerships within a

community.

District 3 Councilmember Stephen Barr said Rydin is the kind of person House District 38 needs in the seat.

“Not only does she bring tremendous compassion and empathy and assertiveness in the work that she does in her day job, but she brings that into our life,” he said. “It’s not just somebody who does a job. It’s not somebody who was the Mayor Pro Tem. It’s not somebody who just ran for council … We are bringing someone into this seat who is the kind of person that we want to see in the seat.”

Rydin told the audience that her clients are the reason she is running at the state

level.

“There are things that are broken within this system that need some rethinking and to really support these folks and help them with the life that they’re meant to live, because they are trying,” she said. “I’m hoping that, again, when we get into the state legislature, that I can really enact some policy that will really make things better for our clients.”

Rydin plans to continue to serve on the city council until the election. If elected, she said she will resign the last year of her four-year term and the city council would appoint someone to the vacancy.

Littleton academy revived for 2024

In 2024, the Littleton Leadership Academy will give community members the opportunity to brainstorm big ideas, connect with other changemakers and develop as leaders.

The program, born out of the Littleton Community Retreat, originally ran from 2017 until 2019 under the tutelage of former Littleton mayors Susan Thornton and Pat Cronenberger and former city council member Amy Conklin.

When the pandemic began, the academy paused for a few years.

In January, the program will restart under the leadership of Arapahoe Community College, building on the tradition set by the founding women.

“We are keeping the intent … to grow a cadre of community leaders,” said Julie Beggs, who is leading the program at the college. “To be able to have them have an opportunity to gain some skills and reflect upon how they want to make an impact – and truly be able to feel as if they are an active citizen within Littleton.”

The 10-month program will provide opportunities for people who live or work in Littleton to learn details about how the city works — from city government to education — and connect with others are passionate about being ambassadors for change in Littleton.

Meetings will take place throughout Littleton, from the college campus to the courthouse.

Participants will learn about civic engagement and leadership styles from guest speakers, readings, podcasts, discussions, tours and other experiential learning approaches.

During the program, participants will also develop a project plan for something they are passionate about that will help the community.

Beyond the curriculum, Beggs said a valuable part of the program will be the connections formed.

“Our hope is that by being together for 10 months … they’re gonna get to

know each other pretty well and can call on each other to support them in the work that they want to do,” she said.

Debbie Shackelford, a coordinator for the Littleton Leadership Academy, said she thinks one of the most valuable aspects will be the ability to develop individual leadership skills.

“I’m really looking forward to delivering a great experience for personal growth, leadership growth,” she said.

“The very first day, within the first hour they’re gonna say, ‘I made the right decision.’”

Who can participate?

Several city council members, including Mayor Kyle Schlachter, are

past participants of the academy.

Beyond official city positions, the program is intended to help people develop as leaders, Beggs said.

“We want to continue to reimagine what it means to be a leader and for individuals to know that it doesn’t just have to be an assigned title,” she said, adding that the program is intended to be inclusive and represent an intergenerational and diverse group of community members.

To apply for the program, community members must live or work in Littleton and be 18 or older. They should have a drive to tackle challenges facing the city and a history of volunteering or other civic engagement activities.

Leaders and aspiring leaders from all sectors are welcome in the program, including corporate, nonprofit, government, education and entrepreneurs.

Shackelford said her team hopes to have about 15 to 20 participants this year.

The program costs $500, which includes books, course materials and lunch during each meeting. Costs can be covered by the individual participants or paid through an employer.

Beggs said scholarships are available for the program as well.

A need for more medical space

In 2019, Arapahoe County asked voters to approve a property tax increase to fund a new jail construction.

The measure failed, with about twothirds of voters rejecting it.

As a result, the aging facility continues to face problems with its heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, water lines and other infrastructure, said Patrick O’Neill, director of facilities and fleet management.

But one of the largest challenges in the jail is space for medical and behavioral health treatment, county officials said.

Since 1986, Brown said, “The needs of the people that we are in custody of have changed. We’re not warehousing individuals anymore — we’re treating them.”

Currently, the jail has 21 beds for medical and behavioral treatment, said John Bartmann, a spokesperson for the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office. These areas allow inmates to be treated for mental health disorders, substance use disorders or other acute medical needs.

Jared Rowlison, the bureau chief of the detention center, said the medical beds are always full. Sometimes, individuals who need care end up being housed in the jail’s booking area due to space limitations, he said.

By the end of the project, there will be a total of 58 beds to treat the medical needs of incoming inmates. These will be a mixture of dormitory-style and single-bed cells, Bartmann said.

New kitchen/laundry building

To accommodate the plans for more space, the jail requires a new building.

Contractors will move the jail’s current kitchen and laundry spaces to the new building, making room in the current facility for the expanded medical area.

The new building will address the need for more kitchen and laundry space to serve the jail’s large population. It is projected to be about 21,000 square feet, which is three times bigger than the current space for kitchen and laundry services.

“This is not wasted dollars,” O’Neill said about the new kitchen and laundry building. “This facility is designed for the future. And we’re striving for that new detention center at some point, and this infrastructure that we’re building right now will fit into that.”

The overall project will add about 29,000 square feet to the jail, including the new building, extra corridors and the medical expansion.

Looking forward

Rowlison said the goal is for the new building to help support the jail’s population while the county hopes to replace the detention facility entirely in the future.

“We’re hitting minimums, we’re getting the care we need — but we can do more. We can do better,” Rowlison said.

“This will be that Band-Aid, if you will, to get us to that threshold where hopefully, at that point, we can really seriously look at … replacing this facility.”

Arapahoe County Commissioner Jessica Campbell-Swanson, who represents district 2, where the jail sits, said the project will provide better care for inmates, make it easier for the jail to meet diverse dietary needs with the new kitchen and hopefully reduce recidivism.

“If you are going to be in custody of the government, we have a responsibility to treat you like a human,” she said. “Making sure you have adequate medical care and access to food that respects who you are as a person is part of that.”

see the restaurant close and will miss the food, but they are happy for her. However, Graciela said others feel she can continue to run the business.

“It’s a bittersweet kind of thing,” Graciela said.

Miguel currently lives in California, but he said growing up in Englewood with a mother who owned such a well-known business was interesting and inspirational.

“I think overall it really benefited me a lot,” he said.“So, while growing up, it was just kind of cool to be with my mom learning from her and seeing how she operated as a leader and manager and kind of an influence to her employees. That really impacted me.”

Miguel works in business strategy.

He said he has taken what he learned from his mother, such as how he thinks about people and business, and applied it to his own career.

“I have a degree in business but she gave me my first education,” Miguel said.

“I will miss everything. I will miss the customers. I will miss my employees and I will miss just kind of having a place of community and sanctuary,” Graciela said. “It does make me happy just being here. I will not miss the stress.”

Graciela said she is grateful to the community for all its support for more than three decades.

“I am sorry to have to leave so soon. I am sorry for any small mistakes if a plate was sent back but I am thankful for all the support, and whoever does buy El Tepehuan I will be there supporting them for many years,” Graciela said.

Miguel said he is proud of his mom for successfully running the business for 36 years.

“We’re talking about a woman-led business, a Latino-led business, without even the equivalent of a high school education, and her English knowledge is limited, so that’s something I’ve always found remarkable,” Miguel said.

“Anytime I tell someone the story they find it exceptional. It’s a very rare thing to hear about and see it firsthand, so it’s a big inspiration to me.” burnout.”

About 86% of members who responded said they planned to increase menu prices when the minimum wage goes up 5.6% to $14.42 an hour on Jan. 1. Englewood to host job fair on Dec. 14 City planned event in response to the loss of 154 jobs

In response to the loss of 154 jobs upon the closing of Ouray Sportswear, LLC, Englewood is hosting a job fair for those laid off on Dec. 14 at the Englewood Civic Center Community Room.

Darren Hollingsworth, the economic development manager, said the job fair is a response to one of the city’s major employers closing its doors.

economic development staff contacted the team from Ouray to see how we can be of assistance and we worked together collaboratively with our economic partners to develop this job fair and support these employees,” Hollingswoth said.

Ouray Sportswear President Connor Knutson announced the company was closing after 50 years in an Aug. 18 letter to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Tip not included

n what feels like a lifetime ago, I was a waitress. First, at a pizza place in the town where I grew up.

Eventually, FROM THE after I got EDITOR married, I worked at the CoCo’s restaurant chain.

I was a waitress until I could get my first job as a jourThelma Grimes nalist.

In those days, I relied on tips. Not to age myself too much, but as a college kid in my late teens, I thought getting a $5 tip was awesome. Today, a $5 tip would just get you labeled as cheap.

My husband was also a waiter when we met. He worked at a dog track in Tucson. We both relied on tips to make ends meet at the start of our marriage.

Because of that work, my husband and I have always been good tippers. We understand how working with the public in that capacity is not easy.

However, he and I both agree that the world of having to tip everywhere is getting out of hand. It’s getting harder to be a generous tipper when you are being asked to hand it out everywhere.

Let me stress, I am still a good tipper. Whenever I have extra and we are at our favorite Mexican restaurant in Parker, I have on more than one occasion been happy to leave $50 just to be kind.

The reason I bring up tipping is because of a recent news story I read about Walmart self-checkout screens asking us to leave a tip. Really? We are scanning, bagging and paying without help, but now we

should be tipping.

Walmart is one of the wealthiest corporations in the world. We know that for a fact here locally given they bought the Denver Broncos. I think Walmart should start paying their employees a living wage and stop guilting us into doing it for you.

A November story in USA Today touched on this very topic and made a great point. The rise of digital checkouts and technology has made it easier for businesses to ask for tips, including industries like Walmart where we wouldn’t ordinarily expect to even be asked such a question.

The idea of tips is spreading everywhere. We are being asked to leave a tip for someone who simply hands off food. For someone who may click a button for you. We are being told to tip in everything, even when it does not require too much work.

USA Today’s Blueprint division surveyed Americans on the topic of tipping. The results are interesting as 63% of those who responded said too many places are asking for tips and 48% said they are just tired of being asked for a tip altogether.

The tough part of this, being one of those who is tired of being asked to tip everywhere I go, is that I understand the need. The employees are likely underpaid. They are the ones these tips benefit.

But I must ask: When is it time to draw the line?

When is it time for corporations and employers to foot the bill and pay a living wage instead of relying on the kindness of a tired society?

Manage behaviors and measure results

A

s the year is drawing to a close, for many leaders and managers it is time for year-end WINNING performance reviews. As WORDS I have been preparing for the performance reviews for each member of my team, I found myMichael Norton self focusing on both the behaviors and the results.

As a younger leader who mostly focused mostly on the results, I was missing the critical area of the behaviors that drive results.

A very wise mentor of mine taught me this many years ago: We need to manage behaviors and measure results. And when evaluating people during review time, focusing on the leading indicators first is more

helpful for both the leader and the person being evaluated. The lagging indicators certainly follow, but setting proper expectations around the required behaviors is a better indicator of consistent success.

Reaching ambitious goals requires vigilantly tracking progress through both leading and lagging indicators.

Leaders who monitor these twin metrics can course correct issues before they escalate and celebrate wins before the finish line.

Leading indicators signal future results. They measure the activities and inputs that build capacity for success.

Leading indicators include things like quality of hiring, employee engagement, product development cycles and customer satisfaction.

Lagging indicators report past results. They confirm if efforts actually produced the desired outcome. Lagging metrics include profits, revenue, market share,

project delivery and other definitive scorecards.

Both types of indicators are essential, though leaders often focus heavily on lagging while neglecting leading ones. This limits their ability to anticipate and adapt. It’s like driving while only looking in the rearview mirror. Say your goal is to reduce customer churn. Leading indicators like Net Promoter Score show early warning signs of dissatisfaction you can address before customers defect. Lagging indicators like churn rate confirm if retention improves.

To create a healthy rhythm, examine leading indicators weekly or monthly. Review lagging indicators quarterly or annually. Let leading metrics guide your actions. Use lagging ones to evaluate strategy. This balanced monitoring system enables decisiveness and SEE NORTON, P15

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Mandate therapy for kids

Although in the year 2019, Colorado HB 19-1120 was signed into law (which lowered the age of access to 12 years old for psychotherapy without parental consent), I believe it is not only crucial, but necessary to mandate therapy meetings for everyone over the age of 12 annually in order to lower cases of depression and anxiety in adolescents.

Early signs of anxiety or depression might not be apparent since adolescents might not know exactly what they are feeling. Mental health can be as crucial as physical health to someone, especially in developmental stages of their lives.

According to the Colorado Health Access Survey conducted by the Colorado Health Institute, adolescents who reported having not great

accountability.

Mastering both types of indicators takes work. Leaders must get good at extracting meaning from data to separate signals from noise. They must ask tough questions to diagnose root causes, not just treat surface symptoms.

In leadership, a common pitfall is micromanaging processes while neglecting results. We obsess over how work gets done without evaluating if it achieves the intended impact.

For organizations to thrive, leaders must flip the script — manage behaviors and measure results.

Managing behaviors means providing clear expectations, then focusing on how people show up, not just what they produce. Do they collaborate well? Innovate? Are they developing? Managing behavior looks at culture and problem-solving ability, not just output.

Measuring results flips from tracking activities to assessing outcomes.

Did the project reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction?

Are sales improving? Sharp metrics provide objective insights on what’s working so strategies can be strengthened. Managing behaviors and measuring results must work in tandem. Behavioral expectations should tie directly to result targets.

Progress isn’t real until both improve.

This dual focus takes discipline

With rigorous tracking of leading and lagging indicators, teams reach new heights. You spot roadblocks early when they are still small. You double down on what’s working.

These indicators act as navigational guides signaling the path to success.

By taking this balanced approach, leaders enable their organizations to flourish. Behaviors and results are the twin engines that propel high achievement. Master them, and your team can reach new heights.

Francis Floyd “Floyd” Shoemaker January 15, 1933 - November 19, 2023

A love of learning, a love of teaching, and a love of family were hallmarks in Floyd’s life.

He passed away November 19 at home in Littleton with his family at his bedside.

Floyd was born January 15, 1933, in Greeley, Colorado, soon after his parents, Harriet and Walter Floyd, had completed degrees at Colorado State Teachers College.

Depression-era teaching jobs led his family to Denver, where Floyd graduated from South High School in 1952. If it hadn’t been for the 4-H club, a youth development organization, Floyd and his future wife, Connie, might never have met. Love blossomed for the two teenagers when they were delegates from Denver to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago.

The couple went to Colorado A&M college on 1952, became honor scholars, and coeditors of the Rocky Mountain Collegian newspaper. Marriage in their senior year was followed by a move to the University of Missouri, where Connie taught high school English and Floyd completed an M.A. in Journalism. Floyd returned to what now had become Colorado State University to chair a new major in Technical Journalism. The birth of three children and further education were combined as he pursued and received a doctorate in Communication and Social Change at Michigan State University.

The most adventurous move for the family of five was to American University in Cairo, Egypt, where Dr. Floyd, as an Associate Professor, developed a new graduate program for Egyptian students employed in the mass media. After a life-changing four years in Cairo, a happy return to Colorado produced positions as a researcher at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), Associate Professor at the University of Denver for 22 years, and Regional Training Manager for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for 19 years. Floyd’s retirement was marked by two of his loves: learning and teaching. He facilitated 17 popular courses in philosophy and religion for Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI).

Floyd is survived by his children, Troy Shoemaker and Melissa Hull; his grandchildren Kayla and Jesslyn Shoemaker, Benjamin Hull, Socratis (Cody) Tilliros, Antony Tilliros, and Loucas Tilliros in Cyprus; and his youngest brother Forrest.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Sonja Shoemaker Tilliros, his mother and father, Harriet and Walter Floyd, and brothers Rollin and Gene.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in midJanuary.

Board games are rising in popularity, and local shop owners say the games mean a lot to people

hen game shop owners throughout the metro area talk about the reasons they got into the business, they all use the same word: Community.

Games stores are more than just a center for play or a place to buy games. They serve as social hubs, something shop owners say is increasingly hard to find and ever more valued in today’s society.

While church attendance continues to plummet, politics becomes ever more divisive, and tech devices are a growing part of our daily lives, the human need for physical connection remains. Sitting across a table from others and playing games, while temporarily setting aside worries that today often range from personal to global, is one way to fill that void.

“It really fosters an alternative for people who are not interested in religion or some other types of traditional community. And ours is a lot more welcoming in ways, too,” said Shannon Mills, who co-owns Littleton’s Mythic Games with her husband Mike Agnew. “We know everybody here, and we’re all here for the same kinds of reasons.”

In fact, a recently opened Thornton game shop took its name from that philosophy.

“We were kicking around what to call it, and a friend said, ‘Call yourself what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to build a community, to do good,’” said Jessica Willman, co-owner of Thornton’s Do Gooder Games.

“Gaming is almost entirely about the community aspect,” said Jeff Kokx, co-owner of Enchanted Grounds, which has stores in both Highlands Ranch and Littleton. “I don’t think any game store owner is actually in it to make a mint. I think we do it because we enjoy it. We like the people that come in. We like community.”

Whatever the reason, board gaming is hot. In fact, the Washington Post recently described now as the golden age of board games, and there are no signs of its slowing. The global board games market is expected

to double in the next several years, growing from about $13 billion in 2023 to $26 billion by 2030.

Board games promote sportsmanship, family, teamwork and competitiveness, and studies show they increase self-confidence. For kids who today spend hours each day interacting with technology, playing board games gives them time away from the screen, directly interacting with others.

“I think the value of in-person communication and collaboration is very

important,” said Gabby Mann, who co-owns the Golden Game Guild with her husband Ryun Valdez.

“Hopefully that doesn’t get lost in this wild world we live in now. I’m glad we have opportunities for that here, especially for kids.”

“Our society is losing places to meet in person,” Valdez said. “There needs to be places besides just bars, especially for families, where people can go.”

Having a sense of community is also key to a successful game store’s business model.

“Building community is building value,” Do Gooder Games’ partner Dan William said. “Once you’ve built the community, then revenue follows.”

Mythic Games’ Agnew agrees.

With ever-growing competition from other game shops and online shopping, brick-and-mortar stores have to distinguish themselves.

“We never want to win customers on having the lowest prices,” he said.

“That generates a very cheap and temporary loyalty. They’re not loyal to you; they’re loyal to the price.

“There’s no competing with Amazon,” his wife Shannon said. “So we have to provide interest in different ways. We keep our space super clean, fun and open, and are always adding different events. It’s all about bringing people together.”

Pandemic and game innovation fuels growth

The game shop formula is a winning one, particularly in recent years — a fact business analysts attribute to increased innovation in board game creation and the rise of game shops.

The pandemic likely helped fuel that growth, as many people not only rediscovered board games while in lockdown but emerged from months of isolation craving social interaction and mental stimulation.

“In the end, I think COVID(-19) was good for business,” Shannon Mills said. “People were so starved for human interaction. You can only play so many video games before you want to see somebody face-to-face.”

board players were born between 1997 and 2012, and forecasts suggest they’ll continue to be the industry’s most significant consumers. But it’s kids who dominate the industry.

Players aged 5 to 12 are the global market’s biggest consumers.

To meet all that demand, the industry produces more than 3,000 new games each year. And for those who haven’t played in a while, they’ve come a long way from Battleship and Aggravation. On today’s board game menu, there is literally something for everyone.

“People will come in and say, ‘I don’t like games,’” said Mann, of Golden Game Guild. And we say, ‘You haven’t played the right game yet.’”

Consider games like Wingspan, a card-based game about birds. Using hand-painted cards, players control a piece of land, on which they’re tasked with populating a bird preserve. Many describe playing Wingspan as a soothing, Zen-like experience. It’s clearly struck a chord. Since its 2019 release, Wingspan has sold 1.7 million copies and won numerous awards.

Or Pandemic, a game in which plays are disease-fighting specialists battling the spread of several global plagues. Each player has a unique role, and must strategize, racing the clock with their fellow players to con-

quer the diseases. This highly rated, award-winning game is not simple, but players love it for both its complexity and emphasis on teamwork.

The tabletop role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, once a niche and secretive pastime played in basements and private rooms, is a feature act at almost any modern game shop. Almost all set aside one night for D&D, which often draws complete strangers together to craft their own fictional characters, worlds, and adventures. Created in the 1970s, the game is today at an all-time popularity peak.

Fans also flock to game shops to play “Magic: The Gathering,” the oldest known trading card game. It casts players as wizards who get their powers from a universe of cards that are bought, sold and traded.

And among the younger set, Pokémon trading cards remain a strong seller.

Boosting the industry, celebrities are onboard with D&D and other games.

“The stigma that once surrounded D&D has been removed,” Kokx said. “There are people who are very much in the limelight that play this D&D publicly — Vin Diesel, Jason Momoa, Joe Manganiello, Wil Wheaton … many have created podcasts and YouTube channels to promote the game.

“A lot of that is because our generation grew up with these games in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Now we’re older with disposable income, and introducing our kids to it. And it’s significantly more accepted.”

In an effort to accommodate the growing interest in in-person gaming and the vast library of available games, shops are growing. Enchanted Grounds opened a second location. Mythic recently expanded to a whopping 6,300 square feet, giving them more space for games but more pockets within the store in which groups can play specific games together.

And while many game shops cater specifically to the gaming community, offering sandwiches, snacks, soda, tea, and even limited alcohol sales, they’ve also broadened their focus to draw more customers.

Do Gooder Games and Enchanted Grounds specialize in high-end, local coffee, and Do Gooder Games sells sandwiches, even drawing employees from local businesses for lunch.

That’s not just good for the customer base, it’s almost vital for gamers.

“Some of these games take 4-6 hours to play,” said Do Gooder’s Jessica Willman. “Sitting down and playing a six-hour game without any food or breaks is hard.”

With its emphasis on quality coffee, Enchanted Grounds draws a broad range of customers. A Navy veterans group regularly meets there to talk and drink coffee. Women’s groups gather for mahjong and canasta. Remote workers in neighboring homes and apartments stop by to work for a few hours. All are part of the game shop community.

Do Gooder Games includes a room that can be used to record podcasts, space for community meetings and an employee who teaches newcomers to the business how to play games.

“Success to me will be defined by who successful the community is a the end of the day,” Dan Willman said. “We are thinking how to work with our community, and also how to help but also disrupt the industry.

To break down the barriers and the stereotypes of (game shop customers) being white and male-dominated, you need to cater to new people.”

And just maybe, those new customers will find a game they love.

“There’s a game for everybody, and it’s almost never Monopoly,” Mythic Games’ Shannon Mills said. “Gaming is like a walk-in closet; it’s way bigger than you thought it would be.”

Miners Alley triples down on holiday theater for 2023

he holidays have always been a special time at Golden’s Miners Alley Playhouse. Typically, an offering for children and one that adults can enjoy means the theater has made a name for itself as one of the go-to places to get a healthy dose of seasonal cheer.

Menzingers at Mission Ballroom

The Menzingers make punk rock that has more in common with legendary groups like Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band than it does with the Sex Pistols, and to my mind, that’s all to the good.

Over their more than 15-year career, the group’s sound has evolved to be as anthemic as the biggest arena rock band while sacrificing none of its working-man ethos.

Their latest album, “Some of It Was True,” continues in this vein, offering some of their sharpest songwriting paired with some truly rocking tunes.

The company began laying off employees in October and will continue until the end of 2023 according to Knutson’s letter.

“It is possible a few positions may continue into the first quarter of 2024. All affected employees have been notified of the plant closing,” the letter said.

Hollingsworth said Englewood is partnering with the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment and Arapahoe-Douglas Works Rapid Response Team to host the fair and provide information regarding other opportunities to dislocated workers.

“Many of these employees live in or around this community and they will be looking for employment close to home.,” Hollingsworth said. “In short, this event supports the dislocated employees and area businesses.”

Hollingsworth said there are various skill sets among those in the 154 dislocated employees including “production, warehouse, accounting, administration, management, and more.”

“These skill sets are valuable in the marketplace and local businesses need talent to grow,” he said. “So this event is actually supporting the growth of our existing businesses by helping to connect talent with local employers.”

Hollingsworth said a total of eight employers have

signed up to participate in the job fair and he said the city believes most of the 154 former Ouray employees will participate in the event.

“We hope this event benefits not only the workers and families impacted by the closure of Ouray Sportswear in Englewood, but also helps local employers seeking to fill vacant positions and grow their businesses,” Hollingsworth said.

Additionally, Hollingsworth said the city’s economic development team is working with Ouray and the owner of the property to “backfill the commercial space and attract a new vibrant company to our community,” he said.

That space is 114,000 square feet and is well suited for another large employer.”

For Beggs, carrying on the academy seems like a fitting thing for the college to do.

“It really is an opportunity for Arapahoe Community College to continue to be more engaged within the city of Littleton,” she said. “This just seems like a no-brainer for us, that we would be the place that would host an academy and continue to grow it and use resources that we have to help support the city that we love being a part of.”

Schlachter said investing in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is not disinvesting in car infrastructure.

“It’s not people saying ‘We’re gonna tear up this road, you’re not gonna be able to get in your car,’” he said. “It’s for the people that want to bike to do it safely.”

District 3 Councilmember Stephen Barr said it is crucial for the city to grow its funding pot to support more multimodal infrastructure, by seeking more grant opportunities or adjusting car registration fees.

“Transportation and multimodal mobility is essential to every aspect of our city’s growth — hands down, tragedy notwithstanding,” he said. “And if it takes a tragedy for us to start making the correct decisions in reprioritizing our funding, increasing our staffing levels, designing facilities to accommodate those changes, changing the way we move and get around this city — that is only going to be in line and put us in a better position amongst the region.”

Vibrant Littleton members Phil McCart and Matt Duff, who is on the Transportation and Mobility Board, said some comments during the meeting highlighted cultural changes that need to take place to protect cyclists and pedestrians.

They said protecting people is more important than not inconveniencing drivers, and they believe the community is ready for bold

What next?

Reester recommended the city council host a community listening session to hear what residents want.

He said the city should also work with the Transportation and Mobility Board to examine best practices from other communities and update its analysis of high-priority improvement locations.

After that, he said staff can come back to the council with priorities to update the Transportation Master Plan. This would include ideas for how to move funding around to support more projects, if desired.

City Manager Jim Becklneberg said staff would plan to present these ideas to the council in the summer of 2024. This would allow funding to be incorporated into the 2025 budget.

At-Large Councilmember Gretchen Rydin said the city should take action sooner.

“We’ve already heard a lot through public testimony, through individual contacts with some of us, so I’m sure we’re just going to be hearing some of those similar things” at the listening session, she said. “I don’t think, particularly, that we need to be waiting to move on some of those ideas — we already have some of those ideas.”

She suggested lowering speed limits in the city, particularly near school zones, while the city works on other solutions.

Becklenberg said city staff will look into this option when analyzing next steps.

One of Cherry Creek football coach Dave Logan’s convictions is that when two good teams get together there are usually one or two plays that make the difference.

That was the case in the Class 5A state championship game at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins on Dec. 2.

This time there were three big plays that did not go the Bruins’ way as Columbine stopped them from winning their fifth straight state title with a 28-14 victory on a cold, windy day.

Columbine finished the season with a 14-0 record while previously unbeaten Cherry Creek lost for the first time during the 2023 campaign.

“Obviously we can’t make the mistakes we made,” said Logan.

“That’s something we didn’t do all year. That was our worst game all year and Columbine didn’t lose a game all year and has a great team.

They are very good at what they do.

We congratulate them.”

Cherry Creek’s kicking game and the Rebels rushing attack turned the game around and allowed Columbine to win under coach Andy Lowry.

Two shanked punts, one for four yards and the second for seven yards, set the Rebels up for two short touchdown drives.

And then Josh Snyder returned took a Bruins’ kickoff 98 yards to the house.

“Our kicking game was great all year and it killed us today,” said Logan.

Cherry Creek also lost a fumble and twice turned the ball over on downs in the second half.

“Anytime we play them, we know

what we are in for,” said Logan.

Columbine has a rushing game that averaged 315.2 yards a game and the Rebels rushed for 251 yards in the title game against Creek. The Rebels threw only two passes and one was intercepted.

“We gave it all, our intensity was high,” said sophomore linebacker Tufanua Umu-Cais. “The better team won. I can take the blame. Our team really relies on our defense and the defense didn’t show up today. I didn’t show up today.”

Umu-Cais tallied nine tackles and one for a loss. Jake Howell led the Bruins’ defense with 10 tackles.

Klyon Johnson had the Creek interception.

Cherry Creek sophomore quarterback Brady Vodicka was 11 for 22 for 205 yards passing, but did not get it in the endzone.

Vodicka was also the Bruins’ leader on the ground, racking up 59 yards on 16 rushes and a touchdown.

Tyson Mack averaged 50.5 yards on his two receptions. Snyder was Columbine’s top ball carrier with 125 yards on 25 attempts and two touchdowns.

Littleton retreat to focus on sustainability Its theme will be sustainability, highlighting current and planned practices and programs that support community sustainability.

“Climate change is real, and there are a lot of people who struggle with, how can they make a difference? What is it they can do to minimize the impacts of climate change, and maybe even just understand them?” Conklin, who pitched the theme, said. “I was motivated to help people who are interested in that topic to get more information that applied locally, here in Littleton, to them.”

The retreat leaders are hoping to gather feedback from community members to narrow down specific topics within the theme of sustainability.

A three-question survey to help dictate programming will be open until the end of the year and is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PMJXSV6.

Once the organizers learn what people are interested in focusing on, they will plan speakers for the event.

Specific topics could include sustainable building, open space and recreation, water use, waste stream reductions, air quality and cultural events.

In 1975, several passionate citizens came together to create a retreat that would educate Littleton residents about matters in their community.

The hope was that citizens would come back to Littleton and disseminate what they had learned among their neighbors and friends in order to create a more educated community.

Today, the Littleton Community Retreat continues this work, gathering neighbors to learn together.

“The biggest purpose is to get people informed and educated and have them spread the word,” said Amy Conklin, former Littleton City Council member who helps lead the program.

Past retreats have covered themes including historical preservation, cultural arts, parks, education, immigration and more.

Conklin, along with former Littleton mayors Susan Thornton and Pat Cronenberger, is leading the charge to plan the group’s next local retreat in Littleton in September 2024.

A focus on sustainability The event, which will take place on Sept. 13 and 14 next year, will be open to anyone in the community, Conklin said.

After absorbing this education, attendees will have the option to choose from several tours on the second day, Conklin said.

There will likely be a bike tour focused on water, during which visitors will travel along the South Platte River and visit South Platte Renew, Littleton’s wastewater renewal plant, Conklin said.

Other tours might focus on gardening and other sustainability topics, she added.

After the tours, Conklin said her team plans to gather the attendees for a community meal.

Aside from the meal, the retreat programming will likely be free of cost, Conklin said. The program is funded by money left over from previous programs, donations and a grant to the group.

Conklin said the retreat is important because the foundation of a strong democracy is a well-informed citizenry.

“The better-informed people are, the better decisions they make,” she said, adding that people are better at solving problems together than alone.

Littleton Leadership Academy Born out of their work with the Littleton Community Retreat, Conklin, Thornton and Cronenberger started a separate program called the Littleton Leadership Academy in 2017.

Several former and current Littleton city council members attended the program before being elected to their positions. After participating in the program, Mayor Kyle Schlachter, who was not yet the mayor at the time, volunteered to help lead it in subsequent years.

After a brief hiatus during the pandemic, the program is returning in January through Arapahoe Community College.

The 10-month-long program welcomes individuals who are leaders or aspiring leaders from all sectors including corporate, nonprofit, government, education and entrepreneurs, according to its website.

It will “provide an opportunity for participants to explore and engage with civic leaders, organizations, systems and socioeconomic issues impacting the city,” the program website says.
