Pride of Littleton marching band plays state championship competition people better and more,’” said band director Don Emmons. “This show kind of inspired them to do that, and so we were thrilled for that experience with our students.”

The original show, choreographed and mostly composed by the band’s staff design team, included a narration and over 40 different visual shapes on the field. The band members moved together to form eyes, a magnifying glass and the word “LOOK” at different points in the show.

The weather was starting to look like winter on the weekend of the state competition. Emmons said marching band performances continue almost regardless of the weather, and the students did a great job working through the cold.

He said it was so windy during the quarterfinal performance that 27 band parents came down to the field to hold the props down so they wouldn’t blow away.

“But it came off beautifully,” Emmons said. “Everyone, together, made that performance happen really, really well. We were very excited for that.”

Other state competitors from the area included marching bands from Heritage High School, Englewood High School, Columbine High School, Chatfield High School and Dakota Ridge High School.

As a light snow fell on Oct. 28, people in the football stands at the U.S. Air Force Academy cheered in anticipation of something they had been waiting for for months.

Below them on the field, however, were not football players.

In cylindrical hats and ornate suits, 85 high school students held flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, mellophones, trombones, baritones and tubas. Other students stood with a variety of drums, xylophones, bells, flags, a keyboard – and even an electric bass.

It was the Colorado Bandmaster’s Association state marching band championships, where the Pride of Littleton — Littleton High School’s band — was competing for the second consecutive year.

After winning their regional competition in mid-October, the band progressed to states, where it won first place in the quarterfinals and placed seventh overall in its division.

“Our season this year was something we felt really good about, we were really able to build on last year and keep the momentum up,” said Eva DeAntoni, a low brass section leader and tuba player in the band.

“Our performance at (semifinals) was the best of our season,” she continued. “Everyone put their hearts on the field and fully committed, there wasn’t anything left undone by the time we walked off.”

Participating in the marching band is both an academic and extracurricular activity for the members, as they rehearse during a band class period, after school and sometimes on weekends.

Over the course of the season, Emmons said he was proud of seeing the students’ growth.

Englewood police attempt to arrest school board candidate

The Englewood Police Department confirmed on the morning of Nov. 2 that they tried to locate Englewood school board candidate Davon Williams to take him into custody on an active Adams County arrest warrant.

Williams is running unopposed for the Englewood School Board.

In a statement, the Englewood Police Department said, “We are aware of the warrant for Davon Williams.

We have made attempts to contact him and will continue to do so until we are able to take him into custody on the warrant if and when we are able to locate him. We understand the community’s concerns and hope that due to the media attention, Mr. Williams will turn himself in to the police department as soon as possible.”

Police are attempting to locate Williams and are acting on an outstanding warrant that has been active since January 2020, according to the Adams County Combined Court Records Department.

In an email to the Englewood Herald, Williams said, “I have counsel dealing with this. No comment.”

Records show that Williams’ active arrest warrant is for a 2019 allegation of “aggravated motor vehicle theft second degree” in Westminster.

According to the affidavit, a buyer purchased a car from Williams, and it broke down months later.

The affidavit says the buyer arranged for Williams to tow it to a mechanic’s shop. After some discussion of Wil-

liams buying back the vehicle while it was allegedly in the shop, contact ceased. The buyer’s next knowledge of the vehicle’s whereabouts came six days later when Denver police notified the buyer that the vehicle had been found in a parking garage, the affidavit says.

Anne Trujillo leaves Denver7 after almost 40 years Becoming a broadcaster

For many who watch local news in the Denver metro area, Anne Trujillo has become a familiar household presence as a longtime news anchor with the Denver7 news station.

Her confident voice and smile has filled local kitchens and living rooms across the region, as families catch up on the day’s top stories during the evening news cycle and before bedtime.

After 39 years, Trujillo’s common presence will soon change as she is set to officially sign off for the last time this month.

As she turns the page to her next adventure, the Littleton resident says she plans to spend more time with family and figure out her next big thing.

As opposed to saying she is “retiring,” Trujillo said she thinks of her next step as “renovating,” an idea she said she adopted from Chilean writer Isabel Allende.

“I just feel like it’s time for a change,” she said. “ I just feel like there’s so much more I want to do – and I can’t even tell you what that is specifically … I just know that there are other things out there that I feel like I am young enough and capable enough to take on.”

Trujillo was born in Santa Fe and spent some of her childhood in Los Angeles before her family moved to Littleton when she was in sixth grade.

She attended East Elementary School, Euclid Middle School and graduated from Littleton High School.

As an avid reader, Trujillo always loved her English and literature classes growing up. Her first job — running errands at the Littleton Independent — foreshadowed her career in journalism, although she said she never really considered it as a kid.

The first-generation college student started out as a business major, but decided to take an introduction to journalism class.

After that, everything started to fall into place.

“The more I took journalism classes, the more I kept going in that direction,” Trujillo said. “It just kinda happened.”

She started at Mesa College in Grand Junction and then went to the University of Colorado Boulder. During college, she worked at a Spanish radio station with her mother, she said.

City officials expect the project to be complete at the end of 2024.

“The South Englewood Flood Reduction Project will reduce flooding in the South Englewood Drainage Basin by constructing new stormwater detention ponds and making stormwater pipe improvements,” Harguth said. “The stormwater detention ponds will be located along the west side of South Navajo Street, just south of West Radcliff Avenue.”

Tim Hoos, deputy director of public works, engineering and asset Management, said the city is looking forward to completing this project.

“After four years of careful planning, studying and design work as well as securing the necessary funding to improve the city’s storm sewer system, the city is excited to begin construction of this important stormwater project that will improve the durability and resiliency of the city’s storm sewer system for current and future generations of Engle-

Harguth said pipe improvements will be made into various areas including Rotolo Park, Stanford Avenue, South Navajo Street and Oxford Avenue.

Harguth said planning for the project began in 2019. Elements of the project are expected to contribute

to improving infrastructure in the south.

Harguth said detention ponds will be constructed to help reduce flooding.

“During rain events, the stormwater detention ponds will fill with water providing storage for runoff,” Harguth said. “When the rain stops,

the stormwater detention pond is designed to drain within 24 to 48 hours following rain or snowmelt events.”

Harguth said the larger pond will be open for recreation or passive open space once it drains.

“Construction of the stormwater detention ponds will require demolishing existing buildings on property acquired by the city in April 2022,” Harguth said. “After demolition, many yards of dirt will be removed from the site to create storage for stormwater runoff.”

Next, the city will install portions of new stormwater piping with a machine that tunnels below the surface.

“This tunnel boring machine will install a storm sewer pipe on Stanford Drive and Stanford Avenue west of Rotolo Park. Certain sections of road will be excavated to create boring pits, which will then be used to

insert and remove the boring machine and install the new stormwater pipe,” Harguth said.

Harguth said the tunneling work will allow residents to continue using Stanford Drive and Stanford Avenue near Rotolo Park during construction of the project.

Harguth said the city will install a new stormwater pipe by open-cut trench excavation at various locations at the project site including “Rotolo Park, along Stanford Avenue east of Navajo Street, and along Navajo Street between Stanford Avenue and Quincy Avenue.”

“Installing these pipes will require full and partial road closures and detours. This type of pipe installation is more cost effective than tunneling but impacts traffic more,” Harguth said.

Additionally, Harguth said the project will include the rehabilitation of the existing stormwater pipe on Oxford Avenue into Navajo Street to the South Platte River west of Santa Fe Drive.

“Most of the repairs will be completed below ground by accessing the pipe from manholes at the surface,” Harguth said. “Short segments of pipe at the intersection of Navajo Street and Oxford Avenue and on Oxford Avenue west of Santa Fe Drive will require digging to repair.”

Harguth said traffic control will be needed at the repair sites but there won’t be any full road closures.

Lastly, Harguth said a section of Rotolo Park will be regarded as dirt and will be moved to direct stormwater into the new stormwater pipes and the detention ponds.

“This work will close a section of Rotolo Park for a period of time and disturb areas with existing grass,” Harguth said. “Any grass and landscaping impacted by this work will be restored after construction is complete.”

Harguth said this project will improve the city’s storm system and allow for “stormwater to flow through the system from upstream locations, including areas near Acoma Street south of Tufts Avenue and Rotolo Park.”

“The City of Englewood realized addressing the challenge of localized flooding would be costly,” Harguth said. “The city contracted with engineering experts to identify and prioritize the most effective flood reduction projects and how to invest city resources wisely.”`

Operation Green Light is a national program for veterans

As of Nov. 6, people passing by Arapahoe County buildings will notice them bathed in green light.

The county will light them as part of a week-long national “Operation Green Light” initiative organized by the National Association of Counties.

The goal of the initiative is to show support for military veterans, raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by veterans and help connect them to resources.aQ3Aqs` “(It’s) basically an effort to influence our citizens to understand the sacrifices of veterans and their families, and to let veterans know that there’s an opportunity to come in and we can help you,” said District 5 Commissioner Bill Holen.

As a disabled veteran, Holden said he understands firsthand the challenges that many veterans face and he has dedicated much of his life in public service to advocating for them.

He said part of the purpose of the green light initiative is to make veterans aware of the services the county offers.

“It gives us an opportunity to reach out to the veteran community and say, ‘Hey, here’s an opportunity to come in and get some free services that will help you with a variety of benefits that you’re eligible for,” he said.

The county’s Veterans Services Office can help connect veterans to disability compensation, mental health resources, substance abuse recovery programs, student loans, survivor pensions and job training and opportunities, Holen said.

The office, which is staffed by veterans, helps veterans present claims and applications to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs for these benefits.

“A lot of veterans, when they get out, they just want to forget about their service,” Holen said. “Many of them may very well be eligible as a result of their military service, and there’s benefits and opportunities to assist them and

their families to cope with those issues.”

Arapahoe County has assisted veterans on 643 claims so far in 2023 and anticipates hundreds of additional claims to be filled before the end of the year, according to a press release.

Holen also highlighted the Arapahoe/Douglas Works Workforce Center, which offers career assistance and has a specific program for veterans and qualifying spouses.

Holen encouraged community members who are interested in supporting veterans to light a green light at their homes or businesses as part of the initiative.

“When people ask, it gives them the opportunity to explain why they did that,” he said.

He said community members can also support veterans by signing up for volunteer opportunities that directly assist veterans.

Swedish Medical Center and HCA HealthONE recently celebrated the opening of the new Sarah Cannon Cancer Pavilion, which will offer comprehensive cancer care for people in one location.

Swedish Medical Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 26.

According to the press release, the new pavilion is a $15 million investment and part of a larger $100 million capital improvement project currently underway at Swedish

Medical Center.

Dr. Paul Van der Sloot, a medical professional at the facility, said it feels amazing to have the pavilion open after years of planning.

A thankful season

W

e have entered November. It is hard to believe how fast our months and seasons come FROM THE and fade away these days. It EDITOR is a regular occurrence for someone to tell me to treasure the time I have with my children because it goes so fast.

I understand Thelma Grimes that all too well these days as my daughter is in her final year of high school and my two sons are growing too fast, becoming more independent and finding their own personalities, hobbies and interests every day. Hugs at bedtime are even becoming few and far between.

While I take a lot of this column space every week to gripe about the world around me, there are times we all need to take a breath and look at the good.

With the Thanksgiving season upon us, I often reflect on all that I have to be thankful for and a lot of the things I often take for granted.

It’s likely no surprise that I am most thankful for my children. After a long day, week at work – my 10-year-old son is often one of the first to give a hug, say something supportive and let me know I am a good mom even if the world outside does not always treat me nicely because of the work I choose to do.

My 7-year-old is always ready with a football to play catch. Whether inside or outside, he will play for hours if I participate that long. I try to play as often as I can, as I continue to take the advice about time going way too fast. Of course, he hates when I try my Patrick Mahomes “no-look” pass because I rarely hit him on his slant route, as he says

he is trying to be like Steffon Diggs. He often stresses that I cannot be a Kansas City Chiefs quarterback throwing to a Buffalo Bills receiver.

With my daughter, I am thankful for how much she and I laugh together these days.

I am also thankful for the staff I have the pleasure of leading in the south metro area for this company. My team has grown into quite a group of talented reporters and editors. All of which makes me proud every day because after more than a year of leading them, we have truly made strides in this region.

I am thankful to have my work family as much as I have my family at home.

I am thankful knowing that with more time, we will get even better.

I am also thankful for the recent privilege to interview and write a tribute story for Sonya Ellingboe, who has written for our company for many decades. In talking to a woman who has accomplished so much in her lifetime, I can only hope to be as accomplished and busy in my 90s.

I am always thankful to put pen to paper and write stories like hers. They truly matter.

In the end, I am also thankful for my home and the partnership I have with my husband who is supportive when I get breaking news texts at 10 p.m., working late on election nights, or taking calls from a reader or elected official or candidate who is not happy with one of our columns or stories.

He knows the business and he understands my passion for it — I couldn’t be thankful enough for his continued patience as he and I are nearing our 25th wedding anniversary.

That alone is an accomplishment I am thankful for too.

Trusted and reliable, local newspapers matter to their communities

recent Gallup study showed that America’s confidence in the national mass media has reached a near-record low.

While that’s disturbGUEST ing, it’s not unexpected. The digital age has COLUMN brought a barrage of national news sources that are focused on sound bites, opinions, partisan views and a race to push out breaking news, even if it hasn’t been properly fact-checked or vetted. However, Americans feel differently when it comes to their local newspaper. According to a 2023 national survey of 5,000 adults, local newspapers are the most relied on and trusted media source of original reporting: more than television and radio, and significantly

more than social media. Trust in local newspapers extends across age groups and demographics, as adults of all segments recognize the value of reliable local reporting that newspapers deliver.

And, beyond just trusting the reporting local newspapers provide, Americans recognize how important it is to have a healthy local newspaper in their community. In fact, 74% of all Americans stated that having a newspaper in their community is important for providing them with much needed local news and information. It’s hard to get Americans to agree on anything, but they agree that local newspapers are important.

Local newspapers shine a light on important issues

American’s trust in their local newspaper is not surprising. A local newspaper’s commitment to reporting the news is different than the national mass media. Local newspapers are just that, local, and are staffed with dedicated professional journalists who live and work in the communities they cover.

Jimmie Arlen Reeves born March 23, 1934 transitioned from this life on October 31,2023 surrounded by a few human friends, a couple of canine friends and his favorite music playing.

Jim was born and raised in Henderson, Texas and spent his adult life in Littleton Colorado.

Jim proudly served in the U. S. Army with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. For 21 years he worked as a surveyor at Coors Beverage Company.

Jim had an immense love for the outdoors and was a conscientious steward of the al earth and all living creatures. His passion ps for nature led him to spend countless hours g- exploring the woods and indulging in his le deep appreciation for music.

Patricia Ann “Pat” (Damon) Dall September 21, 1940 - October 25, 2023

Patricia Ann (Damon) Dall, 83, passed away October 25, 2023 after a yearslong treatment for cancer at her home in Thornton, Colorado. Thomas C. Dall, her husband of 61 years, was at her side and she was surrounded by her children. Pat was the mother of seven children: Thomas of Littleton, Colorado, Peter of Denver, Colorado, Emily of Lisbon, Portugal, Jennifer of Alloway, New Jersey, Amy of Bozeman, Montana, James of Zurich, Switzerland, and Andrew, of Northglenn, Colorado. She was grandmother to ten grandchildren. Pat is survived by her sister Paula Wilson, of New Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Pat was born in Wappingers Falls, New York on September 21, 1940. She attended Syracuse University, where she met Tom, while they were both working in a campus cafeteria. They married in 1962 and moved to Fort Stewart, Georgia, where Tom was finishing his army service. They later moved to Philadelphia, then Washington, D.C., before Tom was transferred with the National Park Service to Denver. After living several years in unincorporated Jefferson County, they finally settled in Littleton, which they made their home for the next 41 years.

As a long-time Littleton resident, Pat served on the Littleton Planning Commission and was recognized by the Littleton Sentinel Independent newspaper as Littleton’s Most Valuable Citizen in 1987. After years of being a dedicated mother to her children, she was able to parlay a volunteer position at American Cablevision into a job as the Director of Community Programming.

In between teaching people how to make television shows and broadcasting many local events, Pat found time to host her own talk show titled, Littleton Panorama, where she interviewed local people of interest.

Pat was also an award-winning artist, known for her ink resist paintings. She was a member of the Littleton Fine Arts Guild and its president and member of the board of directors of the Littleton Art Depot Gallery. She was also a member of the Colorado Watercolor Society and the Littleton Paint Box Guild. Her black and white photograph series chronicling life along South Sante Fe Drive before it was widened has been added to the Littleton Historical Museum’s permanent collection.

She was very active in the Saint Mary’s Catholic Church Parish; she sung in the choir and enjoyed being a greeter before masses. When she and Tom changed parishes to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Northglenn, she continued her tradition of engagement by working at the welcome desk there.

After Tom retired in 1994, Pat and he began to travel regularly to Europe. In the following 26 years, they had made 36 trips to Europe. They started their travel experiences with guided tours, but later planned their own trips, revisiting favorite locales and exploring new places and cultures.

In 2021, Pat and Tom left their long-time Littleton home and moved to Bonaventure Senior Living Community in Thornton.

Pat was an extremely engaged resident as a member of the Resident Council as well as hosting painting classes and a short story club for her fellow residents.

A celebration of Pat’s rich life took place on October 30, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Northglenn, Colorado.

he self-guided audio tour has been common in the art world since the 1950s, but like many other virtual tools, there has been a rise in the popularity of audio tours in other industries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Audio tours can add extra elements that visitors do not get when walking the areas alone, according to Luna Hernandez, who works in the Dinosaur Ridge welcome center.

“The audio tour definitely gives you more information than if you were to just walk the trail on your own,” Hernandez said. “We do have those outdoor plaques and stuff like that on the trail. So you still get some information when you’re walking it. But with the audio tour, there is a resident geologist who guides you up the ridge and gives you a lot of information.”

Today, it’s not uncommon to plan a full-day trip complete with a tour of any place around the globe. This includes communities in the Denver metro region.

Self-guided tours in the region cover art, like the 40 West ArtLine; local landmarks, like Dinosaur Ridge; and whole natural regions, like the I-70 Audio Tour. The key to finding these tours is deciding what to see, the level of planned involvement and time allotment.

What to see

Art was the original self-guided audio tour and is a popular self-guided tour focus. In Lakewood, the 40 West ArtLine audio tours take participants through the growing arts district. There are three tour options, all narrated by “art advocate and tour guide” Corrine Anderson.

The Grit and Glitter tour is a primer on the importance and legacy of West Colfax. The tour takes listeners through the neighborhoods going toward Aviation Park in Lakewood. The tour gives history and a sort of mini art lecture on the outdoor art, murals and more along the busiest part of the 40 West Art District.

The Art and Leisure Tour begins at Lamar Street Light Rail Station and follows the track through some of Lakewood’s outdoor art, architecture and more. The Art and Leisure Tour also touches on Lakewood’s agricultural heritage before ending at Mountain Air Park.

The Transportation and Art Tour also begins at the Lamar Street Rail Station. It runs along Lamar Street to the 40 West Art District headquarters. The tour takes a historic slant and guides listeners through the history of the area in addition to highlighting the murals and outdoor art along the way.

However, art is not the only focus of guided tours in the area. Take an urban stroll through the history of the Five Points neighborhood with the Five Points Business District Walking Tour. It takes listeners on a reverent tour of Denver’s historic Black neighborhood.

The kids will love the blast to prehistoric Colorado in the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour. The tour is packed with dinosaur facts that will almost make the listener forget about the steepness of the 2.5-mile ridge climb.

The Wild I-70 Audio Tour is more of a natural Front Range focus that takes listeners from Golden to Glenwood. This tour is best done by car, bike or motorized vehicle. It’s 144 miles long and talks about wildlife, including historic animal migration facts, in addition to other natural history and environmental facts.

There are other tours like the State Capitol Audio Tours which concentrates on the Capitol building in Denver, The Story Line Audio Tour touches on 15 sites integral to the history of the city of Aurora and Arapahoe County and the Highlands Ranch Mansion self-guided tour.

What to consider

Choosing a tour can be a chore. There are a few things to consider before deciding, so a little research is required.

Pricing is one issue to consider. Some apps that offer a slew of guided tours also charge up to $50 per person. However, many of the self-guided tours are free to the public. The 40 West ArtsLine Tours are free, but the Dinosaurs Ridge Tours cost $7 per streaming device.

Also, consider the activity level and time commitment. It can take about 3 hours to complete the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour, but there are actual fossils and tracks along the hike. Parts of the ridge itself is a drag mark from beasts that roamed the area millions of years ago, according to the tour.

Only bikes and feet are allowed on the tour, so taking the Dinosaur Ridge tour is much more intense than the Highlands Ranch Mansion tour. There is also the weather and seasons to consider for any outdoor tour. The Wild I70 Tour is a brilliant idea for fall foliage. Also consider the drive in May or June, when the wildflowers are in bloom and the baby animals are about.

Some of the tours, like the ArtLine tours, have chapters so that listeners can schedule accordingly.

Be sure to factor in the time of day. Sitting in traffic after an intense hiking tour is tougher than it seems at the beginning of the trip.

Where to go

The research before you go is key. To find the tours, look at the sites for places you wish to visit. Chances are, there is an audio tour that you can preview before embarking.

Several apps exist that compile the audio tours in the area in one place.

However, sometimes the information on the apps is inaccurate and the price higher than the original site requires, so always go to direct websites.

they make to where they finish,” he said. “The growth is enormous.”

He said it’s special to see how students who have never participated in marching band before learn a whole new activity and excel in it.

In addition, Emmons said it’s meaningful to watch students develop as leaders in the band. He said over a dozen students have specific leadership responsibilities.

“To watch them develop as student leaders is also significant because that’s going to carry them on way beyond high school and for the rest of their life,” he said.

For Brittagne Harris, a drum major and clarinet section leader, one of the best parts of being in the band is being able to create something powerful for other people.

“Seeing and hearing audience response is amazing, and really touching people’s emotions is a rare experience we get to have,” she said.

While many activities involve teamwork, marching band is one that truly needs it.

“This is an activity that you cannot do by yourself – you are completely reliant upon 84 other people doing this with you to produce the type of show that you’re producing,” Emmons said. “It’s a unique experience because it requires individual discipline, yet it requires probably the highest level of teamwork that I’m aware of that the high school has to offer.”

DeAntoni said the activity is hard work, but the community makes it worth it.

“The time spent with people at those long, eight-hour rehearsals is always a little grueling, but getting to spend that time with some of my best friends doing what we love is always a blast,” she said. “The people really make it what it is — which is a home for everyone. There’s no bench in band, everyone is on the field and equally as critical.”

In addition to their field show competitions, the Pride of Littleton performs at Western Welcome Week and football games.

On Dec. 2, they will perform in the 9NEWS Parade of Lights in downtown Denver.

The Pride of Littleton marching band recently placed first overall at the Colorado Bandmasters’ Association (CBA) 2A-4A Metro Regional Competition! This is one of the qualifying events for the State Marching Band Championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28, at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Teens can participate in annual Geek Out

For the month of November, Colorado residents between the ages of 11-18 can submit a passion project into Arapahoe Libraries’ annual “Geek Out” contest and have a chance at winning one of 12 prizes.

Whether it be cosplaying, creating fan art, writing stories, or composing music, all types of projects can be entered into the contest.

Prizes include gaming systems (a PlayStation 5 and Meta Quest 2 starter bundle), an iPad and Visa gift cards ranging from $50-$200.

The contest is an opportunity for teens to pick something they are passionate about, said Catherine Boddie, the teen services supervisor for Arapahoe Libraries.

Boddie said the sky’s the limit on

what submissions can be.

“They can really, literally make anything that they want to represent their fandom, the thing that they are passionate about,” she said. “We’ve never actually rejected an entry for not fitting one of our categories.”

Previous contest submissions include sculptures, written essays, two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, scripted videos and more.

One unique submission was when a teen customized a lawn mower, demonstrating their passion for automotive maintenance, Boddie said.

Last year, a seventh-grader, whose long-term goal is to become a composer for video games, composed a song for a game and filmed herself playing all of the different parts.

Another teen, who had been entering the contest since middle school, finally won a prize last year

as an upperclassman in high school.

“It was really fun to see the progression of his craft and his art, and the things that he was interested in and passionate about,” Boddie said.

There have been few teens who have told Boddie that they used their contest submissions as part of their portfolios to apply for university.

“I think the impact that it has had on the teens in our community, for me, is the most rewarding part of the contest and being able to see what they’re doing with that and how it has influenced them,” Boddie said.

“To see the ways that it translates into a broader community or helps them to discover friendships … is really fun,” she added.

Boddie encouraged all teens to know that this contest is for them and to give it a try.

When asked what she hopes participants take away from the experience, she said, “I hope that teens come away maybe with a newfound confidence to try something that they wouldn’t have before, or even just with some sort of reassurance that the things that they love and are passionate about matter.”

“They’re important, and the things that they love are important.”

How to enter into the contest

There are a few different ways to enter the Geek Out contest, Boddie said.

One option is by visiting any Arapahoe Libraries location between now and Nov. 30 to submit an entry.

There are entry forms at every location for participants to fill out.

“We love to see stuff in person, but we also recognize that transportation can be an issue for teens,” she said.

The contest has a cosplay category and offers an in-person event where the cosplayers can come together and show off their costumes to judges. This year’s event will be at the Koelbel Library at 2 p.m. Nov. 18.

Group submissions are permitted, but they are only eligible for the gift

card prizes.

Given that the contest is open to people between the ages of 11-18, Boddie said a common question is whether the older teens have an edge and always win.

“That’s not the case, actually,” she said. “We frequently have a pretty good spread.”

One of her tips for participants is to show judges their process for creating their project, such as providing progress shots or time-lapse videos.

“They love to see how you got from what your idea was to what your final product was,” she said.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the library district has gotten roughly 75 entries a year into the contest.

Boddie said she’d love to see more than 100 submissions this year.

Although she hadn’t considered broadcast, Trujillo took the advice of several women in the news industry who told her to pause her college career to take the job.

In Scottbluff, on a team of only two newscasters, Trujillo was reading, shooting stories, writing newscasts, conducting interviews and hosting the show. “(I) didn’t know what on earth I was doing,” she said. “It was a great challenge and I figured out very quickly that I liked it.”

After six months, she was hired by a station in Omaha. She continued building her skills and then returned to Colorado, where she started working at Denver7 as a general assignment reporter in 1984.

She moved up in the company, covering major news stories including the Columbine and Aurora theater shootings, the Democratic National Convention in Denver and three Broncos’ Super Bowl appearances, according to the Denver7 website.

While working at Denver7, Trujillo completed her credits to officially graduate from CU Boulder in 2011.

Representation

Over the course of her career, Trujillo has been a role model and a mentor to other journalists, specifically working to make the TV news industry more inclusive for women and people of color.

“I think for me, I just felt like I

never had that,” she said.

Being a woman – and more specifically, a woman of color – was a rarity when Trujillo first started working in the industry.

Initially, Trujillo said she was often assigned to cover education stories and stories related to children. The stations rarely covered communities of color.

As time went on and she became more rooted in her role, Trujillo said she made an effort to make connections with people like her because she remembers wondering if she belonged.

She also started to see her impact on viewers who saw themselves in her.

“I know how important it is to have representation within my industry,” she said. “The longer I stayed, the more I knew how valuable it was … I mean, it’s funny when I think back, I guess what I would say is that I normalized having a brown-skinned woman with a Spanish surname on local news.”

Over the course of her career, Trujillo dedicated her time to men-

torship and leadership through the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the advisory counsel to CU Boulder’s journalism department.

When Trujillo left her job in Omaha, a coworker left her a note that included a message about hope for more women in the TV news industry someday.

“We’ve come a long way,” Trujillo said, reflecting on how the industry has changed since then.

Trujillo has also served on the board of the Denver Scholarship Foundation, which helps Denver high schoolers take the next steps in their education. She also worked with There with Care, a nonprofit that helps families under the stress of a medical crisis.

Love and learning

When asked what her proudest accomplishment or biggest takeaway from her time at Denver7 was, Trujillo did not mention her Emmy awards or the long list of recognitions she has earned from groups including the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, the Colorado Broadcasters Association, The Associated Press, Women in Communications or the Latino Leadership Institute.

Instead, she spoke of something more personal.

“I met my husband there,” she said. “First day on the job.”

She was assigned to work with Mike Kalush, a news photographer, on her first day. Decades later, they have two children and two grandchildren.

“I feel like that was just my destiny,” she said.

Trujillo, who is still an enthusiastic reader, said she also loved how

much she got to learn through her work as a news anchor.

“I love that I learn new and different things every day, whether it’s a person who existed, a law that existed, a community (where) I didn’t know there was this cool little park or whatever it is,” she said.

“I just have such an affinity for Colorado, having grown up here, and I just love when I know about new and different, little, special places that are not always so well-known.”

As she leaves her role at Denver7, she said she wants her viewers to know how much their trust has meant to her.

“I have loved every minute of my job and I am humbled that people have felt trust in me – honestly, I get choked up thinking about that,” she said, tears starting to form in her eyes.

When she posted about her decision to leave Denver7 on Facebook, over 500 people commented, expressing how they would miss her work ethic, integrity, compassion and dedication to diversity.

“It warms my heart that it was meaningful to me, but also meaningful to to viewers,” she said.

Trujillo and Kalush still live in Littleton, where they have a vegetable garden and quite a few Harry Potter-themed decorations.

The couple likes to visit downtown Littleton and attend community events, such as concerts.

Trujillo’s last day at Denver7 is Nov. 16.

Although viewers won’t be able to see Trujillo on their television screens anymore, she said she’s not going anywhere far.

“We’re staying in Littleton,” Trujillo said. “There’s no leaving. I just feel at home here.”

works for longer than he had even been at Swedish, which is more than four and half years.

“With COVID and supply chain issues it has taken perseverance to bring this to fruition,” Van de Sloot said. “It has also taken leaders with long term vision to make this happen.”

The medical professional said he is looking forward to the many services the pavilion will offer people and how teams will be able to come together.

“I think it will enable patients to see multiple providers in one visit, a huge benefit particularly for our elderly patients and patients coming from long distances,” Van der Sloot said. “I think it just brings all of our cancer teams closer together, allowing us to learn from one another and truly bring the best interdisciplinary care to our patients.

I think it is also helpful in promoting a culture of kindness, respect, compassion and hope for our patients.”

Going forward, Van der Sloot said he hopes Swedish Medical Center can continue to develop programs with local teams and use the “national scale and leverage of HCA and Sarah Cannon to continue to create a system of great programs where we share our expertise with our colleagues and teams nation-

Chief Operation Officer Karl Leistikow said the new pavilion will benefit both patients and physicians.

Leistkiow said he is proud of the care that the medical professionals

and colleagues give the community.

“Furthermore, the manifestation of a bricks and mortar environment intensifies the inter-relationships among the treatment teams. Finally, this building provides us a platform to address the emotional impact on our teams, care-givers and physicians build relationships and report with these families,” he said.

Leistkiow said the new facility will offer various services including navigation and education, diagnostics, interventional, rehabilitation and survivorship.

“There should be no reason, patients need to deal with other logistical concerns. And our team of care providers can immediately be

involved in the downstream tasks when needed,” Leistkiow said.

He explained the idea for the specific facility was discussed with HealthPeak in early 2020 but the medical staff has discussed the concept for over 10 years.

“What drove action was everyone delivering on their commitments to make that vision a reality,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to our survivorship results getting better…. To letters that acknowledge our teams and the good work we’ve done… to have to find creative strategies for parking because the community wants to take full advantage of the resources we have to battle cancer together.”
