A recent survey of nearly 700 Littleton residents shows that crime has risen as a top concern for citizens — and that affordability as a reason for living in the city has dramatically declined over the past 10Theyears.findings, presented during a city council meeting Aug. 23, come after questions were mailed randomly to 5,000 Littleton households, with a response of 688 between June and mid-July. A second, online-only survey was also conducted and open to anyone. It received 128 responses and — unlike the mailed survey — offers purely qualitative data, though “affordability” and “cost of living” as well as “crime” and “homelessness” appear frequently throughout responses to a question about issues facing the city.
The City of Denver has seen many incarnations, each carrying over into its next. From mining town to bustling urban center of the high plains, the metropolitan area has transformed in its roughly 160 years as a city, with an expanding web of suburban communities creating a mosaic of character. But as the break-neck pace of growth continues to manifest in new businesses, towering buildings and expanding tourism, the instrument responsible for Denver’s present day-successes goes largely unnoticed. The City Ditch, an irrigation waterway that begins in what is now present-day Chatfield Reservoir, is by some historians’ accounts the “oldest working thing” in the modern metro Originallyarea.running 26 miles

What to do with the ‘oldest working thing’ in Denver?

“It is noteworthy that the level of concern for crime reduction has increased,” Arocha said, adding that other resident concerns have mostly remained the same compared with pastThesurveys.2022survey found that, of a minority of respondents who had interactions with police in past year, most gave the department positive ratings. But marks for police employees’ fairness, knowledge, helpfulness, timeliness and overall impression were all down from 2020.
Resident responses to their police department’s ability to prevent crime were still more favorable in Littleton compared with the average sentiment for Front Range communities, Arocha said. “Not only have we had a pandemic, we have also had a number of very highly publicized civil unrest cases across the nation,” Arocha said. “So quite a few moving parts when it comes to what may be impacting resident perception.” Most crimes in the metro area increased last year compared to years prior, data shows, with a previous Colorado Community Media report finding violent crimes involving guns increased in Littleton in 2021.
Kelli Narde, the city’s director of Cultural and Media Services, called council members’ attention to the city’s job on environmental stewardship, which saw a decrease of 10 percentage points from 2012. In the 2022 survey, 55% of respondents gave the city positive marks for its job on the issue.
The results from the mailed survey show while a resounding majority of residents gave high marks for their overall quality of life in Littleton, concerns about crime and policing have increased. Crime reduction rose to be the third most pressing issue for Littleton residents — with 31% saying it was in their top three issues — up from 11% in 2020. The top two pressing issues in 2022 were traffic and street maintenance, though traffic saw a significant decrease as an issue from 61% in 2020 to 45% in 2022.

Others, including downtown parking and traffic flow, continued to rank at the bottom.

During the two-year period, Watson collected money from Northstar accrued from management and debt guarantee fees, the complaint stated.
His financial history resurfaced during his campaign in 2018, when he ran against Democrat Dave Young. At the time, Watson said his past gave him a unique experience that would make him better suited to handle the state’s assets. His opponents said Watson’s troubles with personal finances underscored why he should not be trusted with money.Watson defeated two other candidates in the 2018 Republican primary, getting 38% of the vote, despite concerns raised about his past finances. Young won the general election with 52% of the vote to Watson’s 45%. Watson put $1.3 million of his own money into his campaign.

“There are some areas that are unique for legislating as well that I think we could get some traction,” Crow said. “One of those is protection of data; of publicly available, public domain women’s health data that could be used to criminalize women’s healthcare in states where abortion is illegal. And there are some efforts underway to look at how we can move legislation to provide some federal protections for that data, so it’s not used against women.”Dr.Kristina Tocce, PPRM’s medical director, outlined five legislative recommendations to Crow; streamlining the national network of abortion providers, developing measures to attract and retain staff, clearly communicated protections for abortion patients and providers and investigating fake centers that offer “dangerous and falsely advertised services.”
5 Abortion providers make recommendations to Rep. Crow at listening session

Aurea Bolaños Perea, the strategic communications manager at COLOR — the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive rights — specifically addressed difficulties people of color face when seeking abortions.
“I am harassed every day when I walk into work,” Tocce said. “I have patients sobbing because they’re harassed by a man on a bullhorn calling them a murderer. That really takes a toll on an individual and makes people even more scared, providers and patients alike. We have rules and regulations around harassment of abortion care providers, but if they could be expanded or even reinforced that would be very beneficial to our aspect of care.”
“(Patients are) expecting to be treated with the same amount of respect that somebody that may come to (CU Anschutz) and this hospital may receive,” Perea continued, “And what they end up receiving is someone saying ‘Do you want baby formula? Do you want diapers? You must go to this counseling center. I’ll give you an ultrasound and I’ll try to convince you to not terminate this pregnancy.’ Almost as if abortion is a quid pro quo for our communities.”ChristinaSoliz, COLOR’s political director, advocated for using nongendered language in messaging so that “we’re not leaving folks behind in talks of reproductive healthcare.” Soliz also advocated to expanded resources for rural residents seeking abortion.

“You’re going to have these generations of physicians coming up who can’t provide these services, can’t take care of women, and you end up in these tragic circumstances we hear on the news,” Lazorwitz continued. Finally,Roy Taylor gave a heartfelt personal testimony about his family’s experience.
FROM PAGE 4 CROW
Five years ago, Roy and his wife went for an ultrasound. The doctor came back to the Taylors and informed them that “the fetal abnormalities were incompatible with life.” The Taylors were advised to have an abortion.
“Protecting abortion doesn’t mean it’s accessible for everybody,” Perea said. “I have to watch the ads, the stories in Spanish media saying, ‘Come here, esta clinica ahora,’ and you will be able to find care if you’re a new mother or expecting.”
Perea also mentioned fake pregnancy centers and said they disproportionally target people of color. Perea stated that these centers outnumber abortion clinics 3-to-1 nationally and 2-to-1 in Colorado and specifically target low-income people and people of color.
“It was an extremely difficult experience,” Taylor said. “This was an experience with all the support my wife needed; I had good insurance, we came to a great hospital, we had excellent care from the moment we showed up until the moment we left, everybody was great. But these things are hard.”
“Another big thing for us is rural access to family planning,” Soliz said. “That includes access to telemedicine and mailed medication and language justice. Making sure they can receive care in their language that’s culturally competent can make a world of difference for folks.”Dr.Aaron Lazorwitz, an OB-GYN, who moved from Houston to CU for his residency, said that medical students from Texas and Oklahoma — where abortion is illegal — have reached out to CU for resources.

“There’s so many lies about what’s going on,” Taylor said. “The notion of the state coming in and intruding on these moments for families is so abhorrent and so scary. It’s just so important that people know the stories. Make them honestly look at these stories and and honestly look at these people and honestly see the pain they’re causing.” ers, but if they could be expanded or

“I, like so many of my peers, want to give back to my community as a healthcare worker,” Villalobos said. “I was beyond thrilled to learn that my training costs would be covered through the Care Forward Colorado program. It makes a high-quality training, like the one I’m receiving at ACC, accessible to everyone.”
During the press conference, Polis was joined by Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera, administrators from the Colorado Community College System (CCCS), students who will benefit from the program and community members from Arapahoe Community College (ACC).
Care Forward Colorado is one of the 100 ways the Polis administration has said it has aimed to save Coloradans money, a target introduced during Polis’ 2022 State of the State Address in June.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis formally launched the Care Forward Colorado program at Arapahoe Community College on Aug. 24.
The initiative stems from bipartisan legislation signed in May, cosponsored by state Senators Sonya Jaquez Lewis and Bob Rankin, along with State Rep. Kyle Mullica, in the form of Senate Bill 226. The bill was implemented to channel more funding to the development of healthcare education to guide Coloradans towards in-demand and well-paying healthcare careers. “(These jobs) pay good, and often, students have opportunities to move into management in these different fields,” Polis said. ”We will only increase our healthcare needs as our population grows older, and we want to make sure we have the caregivers and people with the right training to take care of rector of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, believes the program will sufficiently match the demand for such careers. “Last I checked, there were like 27,000 openings for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in the state,” said Paccione, who was appointed to her position by Polis. “So we’re encouraging students to get started with these entry-level positions and to take advantage to earn a credential in their (chosen) healthcare profession for free.” CCCS Chancellor Joe Garcia said such a program is “unprecedented” in Colorado and will cover all of students’ costs, not just their tuition, including fees and course materials.

It would be nearly a sixfold increase in the state’s dedicated affordable housing funds, which are currently about $50 million per year, Johnston said. The state is also in the middle of spending about $400 million of federal funds on housing across the state, but Johnston said that wouldn’t be enough.
The measure has reported more than $2.8 million in fundraising from groups including Gary Community Ventures, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, and the National Association of Realtors. “We think this is the first time housing has ever been on the ballot statewide in Colorado,” said Mike Johnston, CEO and president of Gary Community Ventures, the philanthropy that is one of the measure’s main backers. He added: “And we know it’s a critical moment for us to make sure that teachers and nurses and firefighters have places to live in our communities.”Themeasure would not directly raise taxes. Instead, it sets aside a tenth of a percent of the income taxes the state is already collecting. However, it would have the effect of reducing TABOR refunds by the same amount, too — meaning it will have a cost to taxpayers in some years.“Initiative 108 is a bad idea. There’s nothing ‘affordable’ about taking $300 million of our TABOR tax refunds for this flawed housing measure,” tweeted Michael Fields, president of the conservative Advance Colorado Institute. Johnston estimated the measure could fund 10,000 affordable housing units per year. That’s compared to a deficit of more than 100,000 homes for the state’s poorest people — and an overall market shortage of more than 300,000 homes.

“The ditch is one of the primary water supply convenience systems to the City of Englewood,” said Pieter Van Ry, director of City of Englewood Utilities and South Platte Renew — the state’s thirdlargest wastewater center. As a main source of drinking water for more than 30,000 people, Ry said there are numerous benefits to enclosing the open sections of the ditch, which runs water into the Charles Allen Water Treatment Plant in Englewood.
“In many cases, (metro areas) wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for that engineering marvel,” said Matt Crabtree, president of Historic Englewood, Inc. Today, only about two miles of the ditch are still open and visible, mostly throughout the cities of Littleton and Englewood. But much of it could soon be enclosed as the City of Englewood plans for a new piping project intended to modernize its drinking water infrastructure.

The project is not expected to be completed until late 2023 or early 2024, according to Ry, who said an alternate plan, such as an adjacent pipe, could be more costly than piping and covering what has already beenStill, dug.Ry said he anticipates room for discussion with the historic groups as the city moves forward with its plans.
Crabtree, the Historic Englewood president, said his group has had conversations with Ry and other city staff about reaching a consensus on the ditch’s future, though he said the group “hasn’t gotten answers” to all its questions.

Keith Reester could not be reached for comment, but an agreement signed by both cities in 2013 affirms ownership and oversight of the ditch by the City of Englewood, which is currently enlisting a firm to help with preliminary design for the project, Ry said.
In a July request made to engineering firms, the city said any proposal should include “plans for public engagement and solicitation of feedback on piping plans.”
“Denver and Littleton and Englewood have a rich history, it’s important to remember our past,” he said.
Larry Borger, a member of Historic Littleton, Inc., said keeping the ditch open in Littleton and Englewood will serve not just as a form of living history but an educational tool as “Futurewell.generations need to know how Denver was built, how Littleton was built,” he said.
Primarily constructed between 1864 and 1867, the roughly 4-footdeep ditch brought irrigation to the semi-arid desert landscape of Denver where as many as 150,000 people flocked for gold just years before. Among them were farmers in need of fertile land to grow food for the mining community, while others were entrepreneurs at the forefront of Colorado’s economic territorialization.Theyincluded William Byers, founder and editor of the Rocky Mountain News, whose company — Capitol Hydraulic — began digging the ditch in 1861, work that was eventually halted by the Civil War and would not be resumed for three years. After the company reconsolidated, it hired New Hampshire surveyor Richard Little who was eager to make a name out west. Little, who would go on to lay the groundwork for the namesake City of Littleton, took over as the ditch project’s general manager. A wealth of history followed and with the ditch’s completion in 1867, Denver became an “oasis city in the great American desert,” said Colorado historian Tom Noel. Along with farming and agriculture, the ditch’s irrigation water brought greenery and shade from trees, Noel said. He agreed with Louisa Ward Arps, a celebrated state historian who died in 1986, who called the ditch “the oldest working thing in Denver.”

“We’re hoping we can come to some sort of compromise with the city that can be good with the residents of the city from a water supply standpoint and protect some portions of the City Ditch that are in both Englewood and Littleton,” Crabtree said. “It is not our intent to stop anything from an innovation standpoint.”Buthehopes some preservation of the ditch is still on the table.

“I can’t think of anything older,” NoelBorgersaid.said he wants to see Englewood explore alternative options to enclosing the ditch, such as piping that would run alongside the ditch as well as more historic signage near its open areas. Ry said the project will help protect the water from contamination from street runoff, allow the ditch to be used for supply year-round and “provide a better product to our customers.”Still,Ryhas heard from historic with covering the ditch, though portions of it will be left open past the treatment plant, he said. “I can understand that there’s a historic value to this infrastructure and it’s a current day water supply system … so it’s balancing those two things,” Ry said.

However, the long game strategy of student loans just shows an administration and Congress as a whole that refuses to truly address, discuss and work to fix a broken system.Iwillhappily forgo the instant gratification the $10,000 would bring in the name of fixing the system to make it possible for my three children to enter college without the problems our students are facing today.
Take all those billions of dollars Biden is willing to shell out to pay people’s loans off or down and apply them to fixing the system. Fix the loan system itself, fix the loan forgiveness system, and for the love of God, do something about the incredibly ridiculous tuition rates our institutions are charging.
While $10,000 is going to be looked at as this wonderful gift from the government — my question is, what happens next?Think about it — a student who had a bunch of student loans they were paying off for the bachelor’s degree gets this gift applied to their loans. In some cases, the amount may even pay them off. What next? Does that person then go forward and get a master’s degree? Again, they will be signing the same loan documents they signed before.

LOCAL A fter President Joe Biden announced the administration’s plan to cancel $10,000 to $20,000 of student debt for millions of Americans last week, I listened to debates, watched the Facebook comments and had some interesting conversations with my husband about what this all means. For me, it very well could lead to $10,000 off the student loans I still carry from getting my degree from Arizona State University. Sure, for a moment I thought that’s awesome. That is a huge amount that will make it possible for me to pay off the full loan way sooner than expected. However, that thought of instant gratification faded when I really started looking at the big picture and realizing this is not as great as those pushing for this big payoff think. Even economists are questioning what it will mean to an already struggling economy. Will it make inflation worse? Will middle-class families be the ones paying the bill? A lot of questions started coming to mind. As the days and discussions continue, I cannot see this as anything more than a political stunt to buy votes ahead of the midterms.

If you happen to read this column regularly, you will recognize the name Zig Ziglar, as I quote him often. I became a fan of Zig’s long before I partnered with him to launch a business and then becoming a part of his organization from 1998 through 2010 in some capacity, eventually becoming the president of the company. When people ask me what that run was like, I always respond the same way: It was a tremendous experience and I was blessed to have worked alongside some incredible people within the organization, including Zig’s son Tom Ziglar, who is still the CEO today as well as one of my partners. As Mr. Ziglar retired, I joined the Sandler Training organization led by David Mattson. I had known David for several years as he was a partner in one of our businesses with Zig, so making the decision to join Sandler was an easy one. Again, I worked alongside some tremendously talented people at Sandler, and continued to learn so much more about the corporate training environment. Sandler has a vast network filled with men and women who are at the top of the list of corporate training professionals, speakers and coaches. Sandler’s global presence provided me with an opportunity to build upon and expand my international experience, learning so much more about the cultural nuances of the many different countries we served. Why am I sharing this? Having spent 12 years with the Ziglar organization and nearly 10 years with Sandler, I never lost touch with the people that I worked alongside at either organization. As a matter of fact, it went deeper than just staying connected, I was able to partner with Sandler while at Ziglar, and then partner with Ziglar while at Sandler. Several weeks ago, I wrote a column about the importance of not burning bridges, and instead looking for ways to stay connected for the benefit of all parties. That lesson and the spirit of working cooperatively is demonstrated here.In2019 I branched out to launch my third start-up, a personal and professional development consulting organization. Ziglar and Sandler were both partners, as were several other of the leading training and development companies in the industry. I have so much respect for those companies and the work that they do and the difference they make in the lives of the people they teach, train, motivate and coach.

Logically, I should have been offended. But I was actually relieved and felt a wave of satisfaction. My child’s behavior wasn’t my fault. This woman’s famous parenting techniques that she promised would fix all of my problems didn’t apply to me. This experience was just the beginning of our journey down a road of getting my son the mental health care that he needed to succeed in the world.Butit taught me something else. Second, I truly believe that there are little to no bad parents. Almost all parents love their kids and want what’s best for them. They may lack access to resources, not know how to love their kids in a healthy way or be misguided in what is truly best for them, but the desire and love is always there.

And while some children are better at following the rules than others, that does not make them better or worse kids. It just makes them different.Ihavetwo kids who are professional rule followers and two who are professional rule breakers. Their genders and ages have nothing to do with it. The rule followers are 12 and 6 years old. One is a boy and one is a girl. The rule breakers are 11 and 9, both are boys. It’s just who they are. And there are pros and cons to each personality. The rule followers are excellent at trusting others’ instructions, they’re teachable and coachable. But they struggle trusting their own intuition and it’s hard to teach them whose rules to trust and when it is OK to not follow them at all. My rule breakers spend a lot of time learning and relearning the importance of the rules around them. But when given free rein, their creativity and leadership abilities astound me. The fact that I view one group as easier to parent than the other is my issue, not theirs. I am so wary of products or parents who claim that they know how to fix someone else’s kid. First of all, viewing kids as an object to be fixed is so damaging.

Owner Liz Boxler had the idea for a secondhand craft store over 10 years ago when a friend passed away and left behind a mountain of craft supplies. She wanted to provide a place for the items to go where they would be appreciated.

“At least they know it’s going to be loved,” she said.
The Craft Box has many items for paper crafting, including stamps, die and more.
The Craft Box, Wheat Ridge The Craft Box, located at 6141 W 44th Ave. in Wheat Ridge, is the “premier thrift store for crafters,” according to staff.
At the Craft Box, Boxler said, the No. 1 selling item is fabric, followed by yarn, though the store does see a great deal of paper crafters coming in for supplies. During the beginning of the pandemic, the shop saw an uptick in fabric sales for those sewing masks. As with many other craft stores, the Craft Box could not keep elastic on its shelves during this time. However, masks were not the only thing people were making during the lockdown.
“Our goal was definitely to keep things from going into the landfill,” Boxler said. Not only does the store provide a second home for craft supplies, but it also provides a low-cost opportunity for those looking to start projects without breaking the bank. Supplies like fabric, yarn, stamps and more can get expensive when purchased new.The store also has a mission to sponsor charities and groups in the community. One ongoing project the store features is the “fidget quilt” for people with Alzheimer’s and sementia, where crafters can take a kit with supplies to create a quilt with tactile stimuli on it to bring back to the store to donate, or to give to someone they know who would benefit.Thestore also uses its unsellable fabric to make reusable tote bags for people to use at the local food bank.
The original Craft Box location was in Golden, and the store moved to Wheat Ridge five years ago. Items are donated to the store, and sometimes the store is able to purchase secondhand items from people. Employees want people to know these items are valued.
“I think it was good for us during COVID,” she said. “Not necessarily a huge spike in sales but more of an interest.”Boxlerhopes to continue to see this interest in crafts, and looks forward to new customers.

Soul Dog is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the protection and spaying/neutering of animals. The group travels to rural areas on Native American reservations to spay and neuter pets at no cost to the public.
The founders always hoped they could pair up with a local nonprofit group, Reichert said.
“They’re such a large item and so personal to your decor,” he said. “A lot of trash ends up in the landfill, and furniture especially.”
“Our mission is to help our friends in the community,” said Kimberleigh Anders, who has been volunteering for two years. The store keeps prices low — $2 for most clothing items, many marked down to 50 cents. It has a good amount of pet supplies that are donated new from pet stores.
The thrift store in Englewood is run by about 10 volunteers. Not only does the store support the mission of Soul Dog, it also strives to support the local people.
The shop, which has been in the community for 10 years now, has become a landmark of the community, attracting a regular customer base.
The Good Couch has a large inventory of restored couches.

“During the pandemic, we grew by like 50%,” Reichert said.
Three of the volunteers at Soul Dog laugh as they work alongside each other.
The volunteers at the store describe the place as “a little gem,” and say that people are consistently delighted to discover them. The store shut down for a few months during the pandemic, but now sees regular customers and a number of people buying clothing to send home to other countries or to bring to the Native American reservations.
The thrift store is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and is closed on Sunday and Monday. Information about the store can be found at www.souldog.org/thriftstore or on its Facebook page, “Soul Dog Rescue & Humane Society Thrift Store.”
Soul Dog Humane Society Thrift Store is located at 4725 S. Broadway in Englewood. The small shop boasts consistently low prices for clothing, housewares, pet products and more.
Not only does The Good Couch believe in helping the environment, but the business also works to help the community. The company partners with Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and helps to donate furniture to the coalition as needed.

Music — vocal and instrumental; dance; acrobats; lectures and more ... single tickets remain now for the Peking Acrobats, scheduled on Feb. 10, 2023 at Lone Tree Arts Center, 10075 Commons St., where single tickets are also available for Lone Tree’s widely varied programs through the next year. We suspect some will be sold out fairly soon — for programs like the Celtic “Cherish the Ladies” (Nov. 27); “International Guitar Night” (Feb. 11); and “Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: Songs We Love” (Feb. 8), for example. Area families may want to check through the listings, with a 2023 calendar in hand at some point soon. (Those calendars have started arriving at this address, so I’m guessing readers have several by now as well ...)The colorful, versatile Peking Acrobats are scheduled to perform on Feb. 10 and are really amazing to watch for audiences of all ages. Nimble, fearless, graceful, at times funny, they offer a versatile program that ranges from extreme athleticism to beautiful “almost dance” and a number of points in between.

ne of the great things about public art is that it serves so many purposes — just as easily as it adds beauty to a community, it can also become a landmark, a location for people to orient their lives around. And Thornton’s latest public art piece aims to become a waypoint for both residents and travelers alike due to both its size and location.

“Kantorei Christmas 2022,” a Denver area choral ensemble directed by Joel M. Rinsema, will bring its mellow sound to holiday music on Dec. 8 at the Lone Tree Arts Center, following the touring “Sons of the Pioneers Christmas” on Dec. 1. The well-loved, locally produced “Home for the Holidays” is scheduled Dec. 15 to Shifting23. to the theatrical: the very funny Reduced Shakespeare Company presents “The Complete History of Comedy (Abridged)” on April 22. There are several listings almost every week in the new year and we’d guess that more will be booked — including additional programs for children..TheDenver-based Mary Louise Lee Orchestra will present a “Tribute to Natalie Cole” on April 21 and Tiempo Libre is scheduled to appear on May 6. An occasional visit to the Lone Tree Arts Center’s website will bring up many more choices for the busy upcoming season. (Such a joy to hear about all the area arts coming to life again ... Keep checking for your favorites and/or something new.)

Alkanoglu has worked in the state before and the way he embraces STEM principles in his creations made it uniquely appealing, as did the fact that it’s made of carbon fiber, which should withstand all the Colorado climate can throw at it. “When I proposed this sculpture for Thornton, I wanted to design something that would complement the extraordinary backdrop of the Colorado sky and Rocky Mountains complete with its purples, blues and warm colors,” he said in a provided statement. “The site was chosen as a gateway for Thornton with the sculpture signaling a city on the move.”

Thornton aims to become public art hot spot
Portland, Oregon, artist Volkan Alkanoglu has created a 34-foottall contemporary art sculpture for the city and when it is installed this fall, it will be the largest 3-D printed sculpture of its kind in the United States and the second largest in the world, according to provided information. Its home will be on the median at East 136th Avenue between I-25 and Lincoln Street.“Thornton is really interested in becoming a beacon for more contemporary public art and a place that adds art that is a little less traditional,” said Hannah Leathers, Thornton public art coordinator. “This work has bright colors and a very futuristic look. It has a technological and scientific look, but is also beautiful in the way it mimics the Rocky Mountain sunset.”

“Someoneplants.has to be the first and kind of set that stage, and we’ve shown it can be really successful and positive,” Salulko said.
In an unintentionally well-timed announcement, the plan coincides with Biden’s climate law, which committee members hope will breathe new life into climate action both nationally and in their city.
As Littleton’s council prepares for its budget meeting Sept. 9, Schlachter said he will personally push to make the Next Generation committee’s climate recommendations a priority. He envisions a sustainability board could be formed next year, with work beginning in earnest in 2024.
With local leaders looking to further move the needle on climate change, Crow said “there’s still more to be done” outside of the federal law — but added it’s a “huge first step.”
Under the committee’s proposal, a full-time hire overseeing Littleton’s climate initiative would develop “relationships with quasi-governmental organizations, surrounding communities, park districts and local business communities to develop collaborative efforts in the fight against climate change and nurture a circular Regionaleconomy.”collaboration will be key to decreasing Littleton’s emissions, Lanners said, and she feels confident that the city’s elected officials understand the needs of the moment.“We definitely tried to express a level of urgency,” Lanners said. “So my hope is that they start to take action pretty quickly.”

Littleton Mayor Kyle Schlachter signaled his support for the committee’s proposals and indicated the majority of city council will be behind it. In recent years, the city has stepped up its commitment to environmental stewardship, Schlachter said.
One of the clearest examples came in 2019, when Littleton joined with the City of Englewood to unveil an $8 million project to capture emissions at the South Platte Renew wastewater treatment plant. By injecting gases that would otherwise have been emitted into an Xcel Energy pipeline to produce energy, the plant has been able to reduce its CO2 emissions by nearly 11,000 metric tons in almost two years — the equivalent of removing more than 2,300 cars from the road each year, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency.South Platte Renew was the first of its kind in the state to launch such a program, according to Deputy Director of Engineering Jamie Safulko, who said at least three other large-scale emission reduction projects have since been undertaken at other
“I never really knew what I could do about that. It’s always been this scary daunting thing that’s out of the hands of regular people,” LannersForsaid.her, the Boundary Waters — and the fear of losing its protection — has come to embody the greater struggle for environmental stewardship across the nation. Now living in Littleton and in her second year with the Next Generation committee, Lanners is feeling “more drawn to be more responsive” to climate solutions.Lanners works for Iron Woman, a Colorado-based construction company with an emphasis on environmental remediation. Through that work, she said she’s become more empowered to push for change and sees the Next Generation committee’s climate recommendations as a key step.
At the individual level, Oldemeyer said he is looking forward to working with residents looking to transition to renewable home improvements. An HVAC contractor, Oldemeyer said he envisions a “huge transition” for homeowners looking for new heat pumps, cooling systems, electric stoves and wiring. The Inflation Reduction Act means some homeowners could be eligible for thousands of dollars for such appliances, though the benefits are income-restricted.
This could come in the form of replacing the city’s fleet — which includes police and public works vehicles — with electric cars or installing solar panels on city buildings.
“It’s long past due to take action and try to catch up on past inaction,” Schlachter said. “That’s something that I’m a big supporter of and would love to see.”
Next Generation committee member Sterling Oldemeyer, 36, said the law marks the “first time that we’re on the right track” to combat climate change. For him, it’s been 20 yearsOldemeyeroverdue.said he first heard about climate change at the beginning of high school when he followed the 2000 presidential election race between Al Gore and George W. Bush. Gore, a Democrat, was widely seen as pushing climate issues to the forefront of political debate — though climate change had been labeled a national issue since a landmark 1988 Senate hearing. Gore lost the election, but his message of climate action endured through films like 2006’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” which detailed the presidential candidate’s warning of how human-caused emissions were transforming — and threatening — the lives of billions through extreme weather events, the collapse of ecosystems and poisonous pollution. “I’ve been rather shocked by a lot of the deception and misunderstanding … that people are spouting about climate change,” said Oldemeyer, who added he’s felt frustration with decades of inaction by politicians and corporations. But with the Inflation Reduction Act, Oldemeyer has renewed optimism.“Tofinally see something that is so expansive and clearly targeted towards this issue … we’re finally starting to take responsibility for our emissions,” he said.
For as long as she can remember, Minnesota’s Boundary Waters — a wilderness area of more than a million acres encompassing a chain of lakes mainly accessible only by canoe — has been threatened by industries looking to conduct exploratory mining.
“As Littleton and others invest in those technologies, that infrastructure, those vehicles, the price will go down substantially,” Crow said. Reducing the number of gasolinepowered cars could have a major impact on emissions in Littleton and the state, with a report from Colorado Public Radio finding that greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector are Colorado’s largest single source of climatewarming gases.
‘First time that we’re on the right track’
From left, Susie Lanners and Sterling Oldemeyer, members of Littleton’s Next Generation Advisory Committee.
“These actions not only put the work into motion, but they also note a level of intention,” she said. “If the city is putting dollars and resources to these things, we hope that it will then inspire other elected officials to take it seriously.”
U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, who represents Colorado’s 6th Congressional District — which includes Littleton — said the law won’t act as “direct cash infusions” to local governments. But by driving down the market rate cost for green technology through tax incentives, the law will benefit municipalities, Crow said.

It also recommends hiring a full-time staff member, who would be paid a recommended salary of $100,000, to oversee and help implement the board’s policy proposals and develop climate-related metrics.
According to documents submitted to council, the proposed board’s duties would include developing a sustainability and climate change action plan; seeking out and enacting techniques to lower Littleton’s carbon footprint and water usage while improving waste disposal and recycling; promoting sustainable practices to Littleton businesses and residents; and oversight of plans and codes related to sustainability efforts.Similar boards exist in other south metro cities including Englewood and Lone Tree as well as Front Range communities such as Boulder, Longmont and Superior. The committee’s call to action in Littleton comes at a pivotal turning point for the nation’s climate response.
“At the federal level, the passage of that law gives an undertone that ‘we’re taking this seriously,’” Lanners said in an interview. Known as the Inflation Reduction Act, the law is the single largest federal investment to fight climate change in U.S. history and will pump nearly $370 billion into moving the country toward a greener economy.Muchof this comes in the form of tax credits and rebates for solar panels, heat pumps, electric vehicles and other greenhouse gas-reducing utilities. The law will also regulate methane emissions, expand loan programs to push power plants towards nuclear and other clean energy, and invest billions into pollution cleanup and reforestation. Taken together, the policies could slash U.S. emissions from 2005 levels by 40% by 2030, several independent studies have found.
‘Long past due to take action’ Lanners said it was a natural jewel in her home state of Minnesota that forced her to take seriously the need for climate protection.

The answers can be found on Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s new species conservation dashboard, which lists more than 350 sensitive species that call Colorado home and the agency’s efforts to protect them.
The dashboard tracks projects and highlights conservation needs outlined in the Colorado State Wildlife Action Plan, which every state is required to have to receive funding for conservation statewide and federal grants. Colorado’s plan ranks the threats that species face from low to high priority.
The birds, which live primarily in western Colorado and throughout the western U.S., have seen a steep decline in population partly because of the loss of its piñon-juniper woodlands habitat.
To address the threat campers, hikers, mountain bikers and other trail users have on a range of species, the agency has implemented seasonal closures, added fencing to create boundaries in certain areas and established formal wildlife viewing areas, according to the dashboard.Privatelandowners can also have

CPW is working to understand how animals that live in the state’s alpine environments — like pika, the southern white-tailed ptarmigan and the brown-capped rosy-finch — are affected by climate change. The recent monsoon moisture, and more importantly the afternoon cloud cover, help ptarmigan and others that can become “heat-stressed” in the high country.
Taking early action can play a role in protecting sensitive habitats and possibly avoid recovery efforts for some species down the road, Klute said. There have been recent efforts to get the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the pinyon jay as an endangered or threatened species.
The public can explore at-risk species and threats they face and track the state’s conservation work outlined in its wildlife action plan.

“It’s a great example of where Colorado is really responsible for the global conservation of that species,” Klute said. “If they don’t succeed here in Colorado, they aren’t going to exist anywhere else in the world.”

The birds, which used to be abundant in marshes along coasts, are now listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because of human development, rising sea levels and coastal storms, Klute said. Colorado has the largest known interior population of the elusive birds in North America.Biologists believe there’s a high number of the black rails that live in dense marshes along the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado, but because they are so elusive, CPW is still working to estimate its population.Theagency’s conservation actions are categorized by its progress. Green indicates that the agency is on track to complete a conservation action, yellow or orange means it is “partially on track” to be complete, and red shows that the project has not yet been Conservationstarted.efforts for some “more charismatic” species, as Klute called them, including wolves and black-footed ferrets, have received a lot of attention. Some, more divisive than others. But there are other lesser known species, like the Gunnison sage grouse, that face a similar need for conservation. The federal government lists the birds, known for their elaborate courtship rituals and whose largest population lives in the Gunnison Basin, as threatened.
The recently launched site allows for more transparency on CPW’s efforts to conserve the sensitive species — from the greater prairiechicken to the long-nosed leopard lizard — and offers more awareness to conservation partners, land management agencies, local governments and the public, David Klute, the agency’s species conservation unit supervisor said Thursday.

“So those years when we don’t get that monsoon moisture can be really stressful for a species like that and if that happens more and more frequently, with climate change, then that could be a problem,” Klute said.
It also serves as a reminder that enjoying the outdoors does not come without an impact.

“We value the outdoors in Colorado and that’s where these species are,” Klute said. “So understanding when the public at large could have impacts on these and taking steps to minimize those impacts can be really important.”

In a long-awaited announcement, President Joe Biden on Aug. 24 said his administration will cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for borrowers who make less than $125,000 a year, or $250,000 for taxpayers who file jointly. In addition, Biden said many students from low-income backgrounds will receive an additional $10,000 in relief. The unprecedented maneuver by Biden should reach over 43 million borrowers and even wipe out loan repayments for some. But it likely won’t fix some of the larger issues surrounding student debt — namely the cost of college and the large amounts borrowed by some to foot the cost of college. Nationally, student debt has ballooned to over $1.7 trillion.
Kyle Southern, The Institute for College Access and Success associate vice president of higher education quality, said there’s two sides to the announcement. It’s life changing, especially for borrowers from low-income backgrounds. But a larger conversation about student debt needs to happen, especially when it comes to which students leave college with debt. This story was originally published by Chalkbeat Colorado. More at chalkbeat.org.
“Getting an education should set us free; not strap us down,” Cardona said. “We’re delivering targeted relief that will help ensure borrowers are not placed in a worse position financially because of the pandemic, and restore trust in a system that should be creating opportunity, not a debt trap.”

low-income families, with the large majority of eligible students coming from households that earn less than $60,000 a year.
Biden ran on canceling at least $10,000 in student loan debt and faced pressure from advocates to cancel much more. He repeatedly delayed a decision amid intense debates about whether debt cancellation would advance economic justice or disproportionately benefit higher-earning Americans during a time when the working class is struggling.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a news release Wednesday that student loan debt has hindered many Americans’ ability to achieve their dreams — including buying a home, starting a business, or providing for a family. The department also announced other changes to make repaying loans easier.

Aging smarter: Top tips for better brain health
The brain is constantly busy during waking hours, but while we sleep, the brain has a chance to relax and “detoxify” from the day. Scientists are learning that this process is critical to maintaining brain function, and in turn, helps keep the brain healthy and memory sharp.Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep a night. Of course, everyone is different, and medications as well as underlying health conditions can impact sleep. Consult your provider if you are having trouble getting adequate sleep.
days of strength training. But, set realistic fitness-related goals for where you are in life.
Don’t shortchange your zzz’s
YOUR Always be mindful of changes as you age. If you notice abnormal or rapid changes in memory or forgetfulness, talk to your provider. There are many reasons for memory changes. For example, if you have had COVID-19 and are experiencing “brain fog,” it could be a post-COVID condition.
It is undeniable that a healthy diet can have wide-reaching benefits on a person’s physical health; it also can be a boon to cognitive health. Some of the research suggests that a healthy diet is associated with the brain’s ability to remember and potentially stave off dementia.Tohelpreap the benefits of brain-boosting foods, consistently reach for fruits and vegetables as well as include items that are high in mono- and polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, nuts, avocados and olive oil. Try to stay away from foods high in trans and saturated fats, like cake, doughnuts and fatty cuts of beef.

W e all have misplaced our keys or forgotten someone’s name more times than we probably want to admit. We tend to chalk up these momentary memory lapses to our busy schedules or even stress. As it turns out, occasional forgetfulness can be a normal and natural part of aging. However, these episodes of forgetfulness also may be a sign of a more serious problem with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s. The good news is there are some simple strategies you can implement that may help combat memory loss and keep your mind sharp, no matter your stage in life. Exercise that brain We all have heard the adage “use it or lose it.” This is particularly prudent advice when it comes to keeping your memory and brain function in the best shape possible. Examples of activities that may stimulate your brain include crossword puzzles, painting, reading or online brain games. Maintain a healthy diet
Bottom line Always be mindful of changes as you age. If you notice abnormal or rapid changes in memory or forgetfulness, talk to your provider. There are many reasons for memory changes. For example, if you have had COVID-19 and are experiencing “brain fog,” it could be a post-COVID condition.Practicing some or all of these strategies might help keep you ahead of the aging curve. Arapahoe was ranked 10th in the CHSAANow.com preseason poll and used its defense to spark its initial victory of the 2022 season. The Warriors turned the ball over four times but the defense was strong and held the Lightning to just an opening field goal.
“Our defense played really outstanding,” said first-year Arapahoe coach Tyler Brayton. “They did a great job of getting stops after turnovers and change of possessions and had a big fourth down stop. The offense played hard but we just need to execute a little better.”

Priola said earlier this week that he wasn’t surprised Republicans were talking about trying to recall him as soon as he announced he was becoming a Democrat. He said he will defend himself. “It’s strange how the way you affili ate changes people’s perceptions of you,” Priola said on Aug. 24, citing the millions of dollars spent on his 2020 reelection race. Senate President Steve Fenberg, a Boulder Democrat, told The Colorado Sun that Democrats will come to Priola’s defense if a recall is initiated against him.
