While city staff acknowledged that $2 million would be far from enough to carry out all the proposals that have been put forward for the area, they hoped to use the community dialogue to “provide momentum” for future projects that could be funded through other means, such as sales tax spending, according to Transportation Planner Shane Roberts.

During the meeting, staff focused on proposals in seven areas just east of the Santa Fe Drive and Mineral Avenue intersection, one of the busiest in the city. Those are: • The Mineral Avenue roadway • The Mineral Avenue sidewalk • Jackass Hill Road • The Jackass Hill and Jamison Way/Curtice Court intersection • The Mineral Avenue and Jackass Hill Road/Long Avenue intersection • The High Line Canal Trail Extension Crossing of Jackass Hill Road • The High Line Canal trail crossing at Mineral Avenue.

Possible improvements in various areas include creating protected bike paths and intersections with physical barriers, widened sidewalks to accommodate for pedestrians and bicyclists, push buttons to signal safe pedestrian crossings and small roundabouts to reduce vehicle speeds.

When asked for feedback, most residents watching online said they were in favor of the various proposals. Some questioned the need for physical barriers for bike lanes and the use of roundabouts, citing a lack of car-related accidents in the area.

Aaron Heumann, the city’s traffi c engineering manager, said the aim of the project is to be preventative when it comes to safety as well as to make the area more accessible.

“While we haven’t had a history of crashes, which is great, we certainly don’t want to start having one now,” Heumann said. “We’re trying to achieve bike lanes in the city that aren’t just for the serious riders ... we want bike lanes that can be attainable for all types of riders.”

The area is still prone to accidents, according to Hannah Polow, senior transportation planner for David Evans, a consulting fi rm hired by the city for the project.

“We do have a concern, especially at the Mineral and Jackass intersection … of vehicle and bicyclist accidents,” Polow said.

Along with the updates along and around Mineral, city staff are eyeing a major overhaul of the Santa Fe and Mineral intersection, a project that could cost about $1.9 million and that would be funded through sales tax revenue and possible grants.

And updates to areas near High Line Canal could continue beyond the Mineral project with the city working alongside Arapahoe County and the newly formed High Line Canal Collaborative, which is looking to pour $130 million over the next 15 years into the waterway that runs through Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Douglas counties.

City offi cials are aiming to complete fi nal designs on the Mineral project by the end of this year, with construction beginning in 2023.

Sta ng shortages addressed in state grant program

BY TAYLER SHAW TSHAW@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Pirates Cove Family Aquatic Center in Englewood, announced June 23 that it will be closed every Monday for the rest of the 2022 season due to staffi ng shortages.

Swimming lessons at the Englewood Recreation Center have also been canceled because of staffi ng shortages, the City of Englewood announced on its website.

Englewood is not alone. According to the Colorado Sun, there have also been reports of lifeguard shortages and pool opening delays in Longmont, Fort Collins, Brighton, Wheat Ridge, Boulder and Aurora.

Amid reports of staffi ng shortages at swimming pools throughout Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis announced new efforts to help fi x the problem, including a new grant program to help offer higher pay, a waiver allowing 16- and 17-year-old lifeguards to work more overtime and a grant that will offer $1,000 to those who successfully complete training and begin employment as a lifeguard, according to a June 21 news release from Polis’ offi ce.

“Spending time at a local public pool is a fun and healthy way to enjoy our beautiful Colorado summers. But across the state we need to fi x the shortage of lifeguards and pool workers to open closed pools and expand operating hours as we head into July 4th weekend and the heat of summer,” Polis said.

The Pools Special Initiative 2022

To stop staffi ng shortages and pool limitations and closures, one of the efforts Polis announced on June 21 is a new grant program: Pools Special Initiative 2022.

According to the news release, this is a one-time grant program that aims to incentivize and retain public swimming pool employees. The program is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and the Offi ce of Economic Development and International Trade’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Offi ce.

The grant has $350,000 in available funding, and eligible recipients of the grant include local governments operating a public swimming pool that is experiencing issues with recruiting and retaining staff this summer.

The maximum amount a grant applicant can receive is $25,000. According to the news release, “local governments are encouraged to utilize federal stimulus funds to match this grant opportunity.” Funds can be used for expenses related to recruiting, attracting and retaining public swimming pool employees, such as offering pay increases or signing bonuses.
