Littleton’s new city council officially formed on Nov. 16 after three new councilmembers, along with an incumbent who won reelection, were sworn in. The night also saw the departure of two councilmembers whose terms had expired. Kyle Schlachter, who defeated former councilmember Carol Fey and former pastor Jon Buck in the 2021 election, was sworn in as mayor, succeeding Jerry Valdes, who now serves as a councilmember representing north west Littleton’s District 2. The court’s approval of the state Senate and House maps allows the Colorado Secretary of State’s office and county clerks to redraw precinct lines to fit the new maps. It also provides clarity for incumbent lawmakers and prospective candidates who have been waiting for approval to make decisions about the 2022 election.

Not letting up on federal and state lawmakers, Children’s Hospital Colorado held another roundtable discussion to push the message that action needs to be taken immediately to address growing mental health crisis for young patients. In June, Children’s held similar discussions, officially declaring a state of emergency due to a rise in youth suicide attempts and emergency rooms filling up with young psychiatric patients awaiting proper treatment. The most recent roundtable, held virtually Nov. 16, continued discussions about the growing crisis, and this time, the Aurora-based hospital system — with campuses in Highlands Ranch and Broomfield and facilities across metro Denver — came equipped with solutions, as it unveiled its “Children and Youth Mental Health Playbook.” In creating the playbook, Children’s collaborated with Healthier Colorado, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Colorado Education Association, Partners for Children’s Mental Health and Colorado Association for School-Based Health Care. The Colorado Supreme Court has unanimously approved new state Senate and House maps, the final hurdle the redistricting plans needed to clear before being adopted ahead of the 2022 election. The Independent Legislative

Redistricting Commission followed the Colorado Constitution’s requirements for redistricting and didn’t abuse its authority in deciding how to apply them, Justice Richard L. Gabriel wrote in the Nov. 15 ruling. “Under our constitution, our review is a limited one,” Gabriel said. “It is not our task to determine whether other plans could have been adopted.” Approval by the state Supreme Court is the last step in this year’s once-a-decade congressional and legislative redistricting process, which was overseen for the first

Already serving as one of the state’s leaders in robot-assisted surgery, Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree is making a major investment in the future by building a special robotics unit. Construction in the Lone Tree hospital’s Evergreen building is currently underway for an outpatient robotic surgery center covering more than 26,000 square feet, slated to open in 2022. Sky Ridge CEO Kirk McCarty said robot-assisted surgery allows doctors to perform a variety of procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery, which can be performed through tiny incisions. In a robot-assisted procedure, surgeons operate on patients using a camera arm and mechanical arms that have surgical instruments attached to them. The surgeon controls the arms while seated at a computer console near the operating table. Through the technology, the surgeon has a view through a high definition, magnified, 3D lens. Sky Ridge Vice President of Operation Will Bertram said the $20 million expansion will have four operating rooms, eight pre-op rooms and six recovery rooms. In the new department, surgeons will focus on specialty procedures in gynecology, bariatrics and urology. Bertram said the new department is being built directly next to the gynecology department because of the number of procedures being done for women. Robotic technology has emerged in the last decade to treat issues with the female reproductive system, Bertram said. The robots are able to more precisely remove tumors and address issues with less complications, he said. Jeff James, a gynecological oncologist at Sky Ridge, said robotics

in surgery has continually evolved over the last decade, noting that the ease of use, decrease of set-up time and patient success are all good reasons for the hospital to expand the program. “Currently, one of the problems is availability,” James said. “With the equipment we have now, we have to schedule surgeons and patients and make sure the robots are available. That is because they create the ability for far more efficiency and better-quality services for the patient.” In the past, James said preparing for a robotic-assisted surgery could take more than an hour to put the machine together. Now, with the equipment currently used at Sky Ridge and the future expansion, surgery prep takes around 10 minutes. In gynecological procedures, James said the advanced robots allow easier access for specialized procedures and with the smart technology on the computer, the robot can correct a surgeon’s hand movements quickly, rotating from left to right or right to left as needed, James said. McCarty said in looking at where healthcare is headed, it makes sense to expand an area where technology allows surgeons to be more precise, cuts down on recovery time, allows patients to be sent home sooner and has less risk of complications. “It allows us to take on a special niche to drive the positive outcome for patients,” McCarty said. “Sky Ridge is quickly becoming one of the busiest hospitals for robotic procedures in Colorado. We want to become a regional service center offering these procedures. This expansion will allow us to have the largest fleet of robots in the Rocky Mountain region.” The need for robot-assisted procedures has steadily increased at Sky Ridge, Bertram said. After using one robot for several years, he said, the hospital invested in six more machines in 2015. cally advanced services. Sky Ridge has not only treated patients from across the entire Front Range, but also statewide and from neighboring states, he said. When robot-assisted surgeries started in 2013, Bertram said, Sky Ridge surgeons performed 250 procedures. In 2021, Sky Ridge will

McCarty said Sky Ridge administrators would never have started discussing the expansion concepts and designs of the new center in 2018 if it were not for the “exceptional” surgeons working at the hospital. “All the robots and pretty space would mean nothing without the great surgeons we have here,” he said. “We have a rock star staff taking care of our patients.”

Abenicio Rael’s mother, Irene, was one of hundreds of people forced to leave their homes in Denver’s oldest neighborhood before it was razed to make way for the Auraria campus in the 1970s. That made him eligible for the Displaced Aurarian Scholarship, though he soon found the limits of its promise of free tuition at the campus’ three colleges for the children of former residents. Rael was able to apply the scholarship toward his bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado Denver on the 170-acre campus north of Colfax Avenue and just east of the South Platte River. But when he applied again to use the scholarship toward a master’s degree, he faced an uphill battle. “I wrote so many emails to so many higher-ups, they finally agreed,” Rael said. “But when I tried again for a doctorate, the financial aid office said, ‘Sorry, you used it all up.’” Rael said he never found documentation saying the scholarship could only apply to certain levels of education at the school. “It struck me as a continuation of systemic white supremacy,” he said.

“I kept pushing.” On Nov. 4, Rael was among the crowd in front of St. Cajetan’s Church, once the cornerstone of the community in the largely Latino neighborhood where his mother grew up, to celebrate the scholarship’s expansion to all degree levels and all descendants of displaced Aurarians. “It’s exciting,” said Rael, who plans to complete his doctorate in higher education leadership next spring. “My children will be able to use this scholarship, however far they want to go. It’s gratifying.” The Displaced Aurarian Scholarship will be expanded to cover full tuition for all direct descendants of those who lived in the neighborhood between 1955 and 1973, college leaders announced. Rael helped spearhead the change by taking his concerns about the program to CU Regent Nolbert Chavez last year. Chavez took up the cause of expanding the scholarship, and found eager buy-in from officials at CU Denver, and the two other schools that share the campus, Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Community College of Denver. The expanded scholarships will become available starting in spring semester 2022 and will apply to all levels of education on the campus, from associate degrees to doctorates. today,” Chavez said. “Part of me can still see the hurt and pain of these good people who were forced to leave and had to endure unspeakable hardship.” Once part of the ancestral homelands of the Cheyenne, Arapaho and Ute peoples, Auraria was founded in the fall of 1858 by a party of goldseekers led by William Green Russell, preceding the founding of neighboring Denver City by a few weeks before the two merged in 1860, according to the Denver Public Library. As the decades passed, the neighborhood became home to a largely working-class and immigrant population. By the early 20th century, it was home to a burgeoning Latino population, with life revolving around St. Cajetan’s, built in 1926. Following a devastating flood on the South Platte River in June 1965, Denver voters approved a bond measure in 1969 to demolish the neighborhood to make way for the campus in spite of community resistance organized by Father Peter Garcia of St. Cajetan’s. Relocations were complete by 1972, and the Auraria campus opened in 1976. More than 300 households were forcibly displaced to make way for the campus. Property owners were paid for their homes and residents were promised free education at the future campus, but once the campus opened in 1976, Chavez said, financial aid proved spotty and many former residents were turned away.

“Students were subject to whatever policy was used at that point in time,” Chavez said. “Some were mistreated. Some were forced to jump through hoop after hoop in hopes they would give up.” Community activists strived for years to codify the scholarship. Santos Blan, who lived in Auraria until he was 16 and came back to teach accounting at CCD, remembered getting the brush-off when he and others approached the Colorado state legislature to solidify the scholarship in the early 1990s. “Today there are administrators and leaders who made this happen,” Blan said. “We didn’t have that 30 years ago.” Then-Colorado state Rep. Celina Benavidez introduced a bill in 1994 to create a financial aid fund to assist displaced Aurarians, but the bill died in committee. Shortly thereafter, the three colleges on the campus seeded their own funding for the former

residents and their children. Since its inception, the scholarship has paid $3.4 million in financial aid to roughly 600 students at CU Denver; $1.4 million in aid for 305 students at MSU; and more than $627,000 to 136 students at CCD. Expanding and better codifying the scholarship is an important step toward fulfilling the mandates of all three colleges, all of which are federally designated Hispanic Serving Institutions, said Antonio Farias, CU Denver’s vice chancellor of diversity, equity and inclusion. “This scholarship is a way for us to confront our history,” Farias said. “It’s a way to build on the past without shame or anger.” Seeing the scholarship solidified is reflective of the times, Chavez told the crowd in front of St. Cajetan’s. “We are living in a time of seismic social change,” Chavez said. “We are helping transform colleges from places of elitism to engines of social

mobility.” Standing in front of St. Cajetan’s with her son to celebrate the scholarship’s expansion was an emotional moment for Rael’s mother, Irene. The Auraria neighborhood lives in her memory, she said. “I still smell the tortillas and the chiles roasting,” she said. “I hear the rosary coming from the church. Paco Sanchez on the radio. I remember dances, boys playing baseball in the street, staying outside with the other kids until after dark. I’m so proud of my son. Healthier Colorado is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that says it is dedicated to raising the voices of Coloradans in the public policy process to improve the health of the state’s residents. Williams, along with a panel of speakers at the Nov. 16 forum, said local, state and federal lawmakers have to step up to address the growing mental health crisis that has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. According to the playbook, like many states, Colorado has a severe shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologist, leading to access-tocare gaps for children and youth. The playbook estimates that only 22% of youth who have mental illness with severe impairments are receiving care. Jim Weigand, a Jefferson County father of seven, participated in the discussions, sharing a story about his adopted daughter who has struggled with mental health. Wiegand said that to get the right care for his daughter, his family had to look outside of Colorado, placing her at a facility in Georgia. Patrick Driscoll, who has served on council representing downtown Littleton’s District 1, won reelection to his seat and was also sworn in. With the new council seated, members turned to who should serve as the next mayor pro tem. Kelly Milliman, who represents southwest Littleton’s District 4, nominated Rydin while Driscoll nominated atlarge councilmember Pam Grove. Rydin ultimately won election to mayor pro tem in a 4-3 vote with Schlachter joining Rydin, Milliman and Barr in voting for Rydin while Grove joined Valdes and Driscoll in voting for Grove. Rydin leaned on her experience as a therapist in advocating for the position and said her ability to listen, not just to other councilmembers but to citizens, would be needed for the role. “I’m able to handle conflict

November 25, 2021 with professionalism and ease,” she told council. “I’m not afraid of it, I can turn conflict into growth.” As mayor pro tem, Rydin will be responsible for leading meetings when the mayor cannot and serving as a right hand to council leadership. “I look at the role as being a supportive role,” Rydin said in an interview with Colorado Community Media following the vote. “I’m not the mayor, I’m a step in when the mayor’s gone or when they need another collaborative partner. And that’s really what I want to bring, making sure that we have good cohesion and confidence in each other and professionalism.” Former at-large councilmembers Mark Rudnicki, who was appointed to fill a council vacancy in June, and Scott Melin, who served as mayor pro tem during his two-year term from 2019 to 2021, ended their tenures as council members prior to the swearing in ceremony. Littleton City Manager Mark Relph, during a speech, praised both former councilmembers for their service. Relph credited Melin with being a major driver for Ballot Issue 3A’s success in the recent election. The proposal raised Littleton’s sales tax by 0.75%, securing around $9 million annually to pay

for vital city infrastructure projects. “Scott, I can remember some conversations you and I had. They were at times tough but I think that they were always frank and open,” Relph said. “It was always about the strategy and how we can figure out ‘how do we approach our community’ and telling our story, and I will always remember that.” Voters supported 3A with nearly 60% of the vote, something Relph said signaled voters’ trust and confidence in the city that it would work for them.

Canvas Credit Union, a Front Range-focused financial company based in Lone Tree, announced Nov. 15 that its planned merger with a Western Slope credit union has been approved by regulators. Canvas currently has about 30 branches across metro Denver and in the Fort Collins-GreeleyLoveland area, so the merger with Grand Junction-based Western Rockies Federal Credit Union marks an expansion into western Colorado. Under the deal, Canvas would add more than 40 employees of Western Rockies FCU to its workforce, and Western Rockies FCU’s Grand Junction, Rifle and Fruita branches will remain open, Canvas said in a statement. Western Rockies member accounts will transition to Canvas. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. “Canvas also plans to explore opportunities to open more branches along the Western Slope,” the statement said. Grand Junction-based Western Rockies FCU has $150 million in as-

sets and 14,000 members. The statement said the combination had been approved by the state of Colorado and the National Credit Union Administration, the industry’s federal regulator. The deal now faces a Dec. 30 vote by Western Rockies FCU members, with Canvas executives saying they are “optimistic and confident members will be in favor.” “Our team has been dreaming about how we can expand our impact well beyond the Front Range,” Todd Marksberry, Canvas’ CEO and president, said in the statement. “The opportunity to welcome the Western Rockies Federal Credit Union members and team to our Canvas family opens the door to manifest even more positive change for people across Colorado.” Kristi Porter, Western Rockies FCU’s CEO and president, “will play a crucial role to Canvas’ collaboration with the Western Slope community,” Marksberry said. Canvas — formerly known as Public Service Credit Union — is metro Denver’s third-largest credit union based on total assets as of Dec. 31, 2020, according to the Denver Business Journal. Canvas says it currently has assets of $3.47 billion and 263,700 members. It is the descendant of a credit union founded in 1938 to serve employees of Public Service Company of Colorado, now part of Xcel Energy. In recent years it has acquired several other credit unions.

The maps, which were approved by the Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission last month, appear to favor Democrats’ maintaining their majority in the General Assembly. Democrats now hold a 20-15 majority in the state Senate. They hold a 41-24 advantage in the House. Nine seats in the Senate, where Republicans have their greatest chance of a majority, would be considered competitive. The legislative maps, which take effect for the 2022 general election, received fewer legal objections than the U.S. House map approved by the Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission. A few parties made arguments that the legislative maps improperly split up cities like Lakewood and Greeley, and didn’t create enough competitive districts. In its Nov. 15 opinion as well as in an earlier ruling on the congressional map, the Supreme Court acknowledged that, under Amendments Y and Z, its review of the maps was limited to whether the commission applied the correct legal standards and had reasonable evidence to support its decisions. For example, a Democratic group, Fair Lines Colorado, and Latino advocacy group, the Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy and Research Organization, argued the legislative commission approved a state Senate map splitting the city of Lakewood but lacked documented evidence to back that decision. Evidence supporting the splitting of Lakewood into two Senate districts is “thin,” according to the ruling. Although the panel “could have made a better and more explicit record to support its decision,” doing so wasn’t required of the commission, the court found. While the legislative commission could have made different choices, the panel adopted maps that “fell within the range of reasonable options,” according to the ruling. Court approval of the legislative maps marks the end of a chaotic first year under Amendments Y and Z. The 2020 census data used to draw final maps was nearly five months late this year, compressing SEE MAPS, P19

It all starts with the attitude of gratitude

ach day brings us an opportunity to look upon the world in awe and wonder. Depending on where we live, travel to, or vacation, we have opportunities to see and experience some amazing sights. The fall foliage seems to have come alive this year with greater vibrance and the flowing of a river or creek carrying the fallen crimson, orange and yellow leaves. The magnificence of a sunrise as it enters the sky and lls our day with hope. The Michael Norton fi calming sunset that reflects all the events and beauty of our day. A Caribbean Sea caressed by the breeze singing a song through the palm trees. A rolling ocean as the waves crash upon the sandy beach and rocky shore. Even if we do not get to experience these beautiful sights and sounds firsthand every day, with social media, we still have the chance to appreciate them through the posted photos and videos online. Or when friends or family share with us a picture of their surroundings or “current situation.” And when they do, it lifts our spirit and feeds our attitude of gratitude. Some of us may not get to see nature’s wonders and God’s paintbrush as often as

others, but we all get to experience something even more beautiful, more awesome and more tremendously amazing, we get to see one another. And even more than the beauty that surrounds and inspires us, there are everyday people of all ages who bring us to tears of joy as we watch and listen to all they contribute to this world. It is even more special when they do not even know that we are paying attention to them. These folks fill our spirit, pouring into our own attitude of gratitude. The smile and laughter of a young boy playing with his puppy. The look of awe and wonder on a young girl as she watches a ballerina perform live on stage. The belly laughs of a grandfather as he tells his favorite stories from yesterday. The scent of mom’s holiday cooking filling the apartment and home with the love. God’s greatest creation, His most beautiful works, can be seen by simply looking at those around us in any given moment. And then there are the people who really inspire us, the givers, doers, and those who humble us with their servant’s heart. One of the greatest joys this world can offer us is the opportunity to serve others. All too often we look to be served, and if the service isn’t up to our standards, takes too long, or perhaps doesn’t happen at all, we get upset. We are put out. And then, as if perfectly timed, we are humbled as we watch as someone else serves a homeless person, volunteers at a shelter, donates their time and money, and

smiles lovingly through it all. That is awe and wonder, and that refills our attitude of gratitude. Sometimes we are simply watching passively at the beauty that surrounds us. And other times we are an active participant in this life, engaged in the creation and in the doing, living in the experiences and sharing each moment. We appreciate every sight, sound smell, smile, gift, breath, hug, call, text, card, message, and words of hope and encouragement that fill the atmosphere all around us. Our attitude of gratitude is so strong we want to share it with everyone. Here, during this week of Thanksgiving, let’s remember that during the chaos and confusion, disruption and doubts, that there is still so very much to be grateful for. The joys found in the littlest and simplest things. The awe and wonder found on the faces of children of all ages. God’s paintbrush that colors the sky, the mountains, the oceans and the desert. Finding gratitude, even in these times

ot sure about you, but it doesn’t really feel like Thanksgiving time to me right now. It’s usually my favorite holiday — full of gratitude, lots of comfort food, and beloved family rituals. GUEST But this year is different, and I need to pick my chin up off the COLUMN floor and muster up the will to find the blessings around me. Yes, I say “the will” because I’m fully aware that I am in choice of how I respond to what’s going on in the world, my family relationships, and especially, within myself. I see harm and trauma all around this planet on many levels, Linda Newell and that’s only the harm I can see, not to mention what I can’t. In our own Colorado community, we can all see the rising human and economic costs of COVID-19 raging in our state right now, leaving many Coloradans with long-haulers’ health issues, losing loved ones, or losing their lives themselves. And now in my own family, it’s one of the most complicated times we’ve ever experienced with both celebrations and conflicts abounding.

I’m usually a cheerleader for the holidays and full of appreciation even amidst the endless commercialism or false narratives about the original Thanksgiving or Christmas. But now? Ugh. It’s hard to even think about getting a turkey or making my favorite pumpkin pie. So, as these uncharacteristically depressing thoughts have crept in (and stayed), I’ve stopped. I mean, I have literally stopped today. I’ve had to stop everything I’m doing just for this afternoon; canceled my Zoom calls, put a hold on my work tasks, and phone calls. I realized I needed to re-engage with myself inwardly, reflecting and listening to that still, small voice within for some guidance. Here’s what I got. It’s a blustery day with wind whipping through the trees and around my house. Even my cat couldn’t stay outside for more than a few minutes. But I’m safe with a roof over my head, food in the fridge, and enough money in my bank account to pay the bills this month. I’ve got family and friends who love me and who would show up for me in a heartbeat if I needed them. And above all, I’m alive!! Yes, there’s conflict, illness and death spinning around me, but I’m alive. All of that is just stuff and actu-

ally, a part of life, right? I’m so darn lucky that I’m not in harm’s way. Sure, I have my own health and money issues sometimes, but I’m alive enough to feel the wind and sun on my face and my stomach full after eating my lunch. How can I be anything else but grateful? I’m not saying I should pretend that everything is perfect and rosy. We all need to acknowledge our emotions no matter what they feel like. And sometimes, we just need to sit in the mess. But maybe those of us who are lucky enough to have homes, food, and community need to get a grip and get on the gratitude train so that we can get out of our collective funk and help others who are less fortunate. As for me, I’m sitting in the mess (for a bit) and then finding that train. Happy Thanksgiving, friends. In 2019, Denver blogger Adam Kaat left his corporate job to focus on his writing. At the time, he had the first draft of a novel completed. Kaat sought a job that was active, but not mentally draining so he could continue work on his debut novel. Kaat, 36, secured a job in January 2020 as a cashier at a busy, high-end grocery store in Cherry Creek. He enjoyed being a point person for customer service, and especially, the social aspect of the job. But shortly after settling in, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. By March 15, there were mask orders in place, workers had to sanitize their registers between every customer and shoppers began to hoard groceries and toiletries, Kaat said. He added there was a lot of general panic at that time. “Everyone’s working overtime (and) being called a hero,” Kaat said. “We had no other choice than to go with the flow.” Kaat then decided to set the novel he had been working on aside, and began to blog about being a frontline worker

during an unprecedented time. The blog gained a following, and prompted to Kaat to write what would become his first published novel: “Life on the Grocery Line: A Frontline Experience in a Global Pandemic.” The book was published in April. It is a work of fiction, but mirrors a lot of Kaat’s experiences as a grocery store employee. “Life on the Grocery Line” tells the story through the eyes of the character, David, a cashier at the fictional Dream Grocers store during the pandemic. “The book shows the human side of everyday interactions that people might not think about,” Kaat said. “Hopefully, it makes you laugh, (and) think about the future and to be good to each other.” Did anything in particular inspire you to become a writer? I think I have always been a writer. I just needed to find the focus to sit down and write. It’s the best way for me to work through the things — both happy and sad — that happen in my life. I did not discover my love of writing until my last year in college when I began reading more for fun and

finding a wider variety of writers. I started dabbling with blogs then and I fell in love. I enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories. My book has brought me closer to people I wouldn’t have otherwise met. It’s a fun journey. What did you enjoy most about writing Life on the Grocery Line? It was therapeutic to sit down and sort through the craziness of the early pandemic. There was a heavy burden put on grocery workers and other essential employees. With all of the uncertainty of the times, I was grateful to have a project to work on. What can your fans expect from you next? I am working on the sequel to “Life on the Grocery Line,” where we meet back up with Daniel a year later as he is going through his year review at work. I hope to have it out in spring of 2022. In what ways do you think people will be able to relate to “Life on the Grocery Line”? Daniel is a normal guy thrust into unforeseen circumstances and he has to grapple with many of the problems we all went through during the first

few months of the pandemic. Hopefully, it helps us all understand what we went through. As the pandemic wears on and we move back toward “normalcy,” I think it can help remind us how fragile everything is. I think doing that can help ground us and give a better perspective on the future.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Build Back Better helps Quality early learning sets children on a path to lifelong success. In fact, children who consistently participate in quality early learning programs are 20% more likely to graduate from high school. Furthermore, the academic, and social/emotional foundation established in quality early learning programs serves children throughout life. In 2020, St. James Preschool was facing low enrollment due to the pandemic. As director of the school, I was considering the difficult decisions of laying off teachers and closing a classroom to keep our preschool open and serving Littleton families. The school’s income simply could not meet the costs of operation, particularly with new COVID protocols in place. Federal stimulus funds, designed to help early learning centers survive the pandemic, were a lifeline for St. James. We were able to use this money to operate our preschool through the pandemic. Enrollment gradually increased and children in our classrooms are thriving. However, St. James is still not back to pre-pandemic enrollment levels. Like many early learning centers, we operate on a thin budget. To build back better from the pandemic, early learning centers need greater public support. The Build Back Better Act will help early learning thrive, in our state and nation. It includes $400 billion for child care and early learning, including funds to increase wages for early learning professionals — a key to quality early learning — and funding to make preschool available to all children. Early Childhood Consultant, St. James Preschool Council went overboard At the Nov. 9 Littleton City Council meeting, council voted 6-1 to remove Iftin Abshir from the Next Generation Advisory Committee. Of course, boards and commissions members serve at the pleasure of city council. However, the reason for Ms. Abshir’s dismissal, per a letter by then-mayor Jerry Valdes, was “it is entirely inappropriate at a Public Hearing to be critical of actions that Council has taken or not yet had an opportunity to act upon. It is further entirely inappropriate to impugn the integrity of those that appoint you” by commenting on unmet campaign promises. Does this mean members of boards and commissions must forfeit their free-speech rights upon appointment? This is a slippery slope. Criticism of elected officials by private citizens should not be limited by those same elected officials. Public hearings are just that — an opportunity for the public to be heard, whether or not those members of the public are members of appointed boards or commissions. Council’s vote sends the message that they can retaliate against anyone who disagrees with them — today by removing them from an appointed position, but maybe tomorrow by not providing them with the same services that other citizens get. At the very least, the vote will discourage citizens from volunteering to serve on these bodies, especially an advisory board that is expected to advise and develop new ideas. Citizens who want to give their time and energy to make their hometown better should not be prevented from exercising their First Amendment rights. Frank Atwood Littleton

itting in the studio of Noelle Phares, a 35-year-old artist based in Lakewood, a collection of seasonal beers from the Colfax microbrewery West Fax Brewing can be seen adorning her shelves. Phares, who studied environmental science before becoming a fulltime artist, picks up a large can of the brewery’s brut IPA, a seasonal summertime favorite, and explains the meaning behind the salmon pink sky and purple mountains depicted on its label in watercolor brushstrokes. “This was a painting of an Alaskan landscape,” she said. “I wanted to highlight how unique the lighting is in a place that’s super snowy, especially around sunset time when you get really crazy colors and the whole landscape glows.” It is just one of several painting by Phares that were featured on the cans of West Fax’s Summer Artist Series in 2018. As Denver’s beer scene continues to grow, many breweries find themselves tapping local artists like Phares to compliment their products. “There’s been a long-standing symbiotic relationship between art and craft beer,” said Jack Buffington, a research professor at the University of Denver with more than 20 years of experience in the beer industry. “(Breweries) try to emphasize that, instead of being produced in some big factory, it’s being made by hand.” These small-scale beer makers -usually referred to as micro or nanobreweries depending on the size of their batches and breadth of their distribution -- have found identity through local artists, helping them stand out from a sea of competition. But, more so than just boosting sales, Buffington said the art is about building community. “There’s so many big brands that exist in the world. … Everyone likes when you support local people. I think that’s a fantastic expression of culture.” For artists, it presents a unique opportunity for exposure. Ken Sarafin, a Denver-based digital artist, said Colorado’s capital has always had a lively art and beer scene. But it wasn’t until smaller breweries became more abundant that Sarafin said he noticed a shift from larger design firms to local artists when it came to the art on a can. “The breweries are offering a fantastic avenue for exposure for local artists,” he said. “That scene didn’t really exist before the craft beers.” Sarafin partnered last year with Resolute Brewing, with locations in Centennial and Arvada, to design three cans for their new sour, lager

and IPA. The cans’ labels are reminiscent of famous artists, such as the spiral sky of the IPA that evokes Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, or the Monet-style impressionism of the brewery’s lager. “It’s really cool to be part of the culture,” he said. “(Breweries) are almost developing their own niche art scene. It’s interesting to think about the impact it could have on art history.” And as the beer scene booms, breweries find themselves marketing to more experimental drinkers, according to Buffington. “The marketing of beer had to be a lot more precise as opposed to a focus around (brand) loyalty,” he SEE BEER, P15

said, adding that compared to bigger brands, consumers see a “much more artistic presentation of the can,” from local brewers. Stacy McMahan, who lives in downtown Denver, knows this firsthand. McMahan, 32, began her career as a product designer at Copper Kettle Brewing Company in Aurora where she ran social media and served as a photographer for the brewery. This led her to discover her passion for design and she went on to work for Four Noses Brewery in Broomfield where she did work on more than 50 beer cans. Most recently, McMahan designed and photographed for New Image Brewing in Arvada. Each brewery has its own style and target audience giving artists like McMahan the chance to try something new. “New Image was a fun project because it really forced me out of my comfort zone,” she said. “They have a different sense of branding than what I’m used to, so that was fun to flex a different muscle.” Reward is also found in seeing an artistic design move from McMahan’s computer screen, where she creates her work digitally, to being grasped in the palm’s of people’s hands as they enjoy a beer. “You would always see (the art) in all these different situations with all these different people from differ-

It’s really cool to see that your label is now a part of that community.” “People are looking for more connection from brands,” she continued. “Sometimes art is the best way to connect with people. It’s all about crafting an experience.” Beyond just taprooms and liquor stores, McMahan said she has seen her beer designs in a host of settings, from the mountains of Colorado to the base camp of Mount Everest. The compact nature of a beer can grants local artists a chance to see their work in places they never would have imagined, said Phares, the Lakewood artist who worked for West Fax. “What I love about the beer can thing is people bring beers in their backpack when they go skiing, when they go hiking, they bring six-packs to their friends house,” she said. “They work their way into all these different environments that art maybe traditionally hasn’t been in. I found it really fun to see my artwork that’s of these wild places actually out in some of these places that they were inspired by, because that didn’t happen very often for me.” As customers continue to browse the local beer section of their nearby liquor store, they’re likely to be met with a growing gallery of art. Phares said it adds a new dimension to how they will choose their next drink. “It’s like the new phase of judging a book by its cover,” she said.

“‘Together Again.’ Whether to laugh with one another, empathize, or mourn, being together is integral to society and humanity. It strengthens our common bonds and lets us feel supported and part of a greater purpose.” That was the thematic pitch when Littleton’s Fine Arts Board sought entries for the 56th “Own an Original” exhibition, which runs through the end of the year at the free-admission Littleton Museum, 6028 S. Gallup St. Versatile Littleton artist Michelle Lamb was awarded Best of Show for her mixed media metal sculpture, “Global Murmuration,” which is displayed at the gallery entrance. Lamb is well-recognized locally for her mural that graces the rear wall of the Littleton Downtown Light Rail Station. She is also a member of CORE New Art Space in Lakewood. Murmuration is defined as “the ballet-like dance of a large flock of birds,” she said, adding the “instinctive hope of global togetherness ... Two brass swallows dive into a globe’s cage-like longitude/ latitude, while copper-embossed birds swirl below. Piano wire reiterates swooping too ...” The exhibit includes 40 pieces by 36 artists and includes a variety of fine arts techniques, excluding photography (a separate photography show opens early next year). The juror was Catherine Chauvin, an associate professor at the University of Denver, who teaches drawing, common curriculum and all forms of printmaking. Chauvin commented in brief remarks to a crowd at the exhibit that she’d personally made more art during the downtime we have all experienced. Her head was “in her art — not in the sand.” Lamb, an assemblage artist, said her metal wall hanging, which measures 20 by 24 inches, includes brass birds and copper roof flash-

ing — the latter bought in a roll. The brass birds were originally smooth-textured and she engraved feathers and lines with a Dremel tool, reshaping the heads. “On the meridian of the globe, I used the bass string of a piano, which also swirls in and out as birds swirl.” The sheet of copper flashing is filled with images of flying birds — swallows as well, so a viewer has the sensation that the entire piece is in motion. Lamb pressed lines into the flashing, defining additional swallows and assembled the various elements. She then antiqued the piece with black paint, applied and wiped off, leaving lines of paint in the crevices. In addition to being an imaginative artist, she has become an accomplished craftsman, who figures out logistics as she creates her works in her home studio. Moira Casey, the museum’s exhibition curator, oversaw installation of the exhibit in the museum’s large gallery, as well as installation

of a longer-lasting “The Secret Life of Clothes,” with items from the museum’s large collection. (More on that soon.) The First Place award in Own an Original was given to veteran local artist Barbara Veatch for “Vortex,” a mixed media work in charcoal, pastels, graphite, ink and collage. Second Place went to Emily Lamb, Michelle’s Baltimore daughter, who grew up in Littleton and still lists it as home. Her delicate sculpture, “Vacillation,” is formed with porcelain, hand-blown glass and borosilicate glass and is 10 by 7 by 5 inches, mounted on a pedestal. Anne Feller, who won Third Place, exhibits “Passing On,” created with encaustic, collage, pen and paper. Honorable Mentions were awarded to: Scott DeWeese for “Basket of Illusion #022,” a wood vessel; Pat Isaacs for “Ravel 2,” an encaustic collage painting; and “Rain in Peacock Park” by Ashton Lacy Jones, created with hand-tinted silk screen (print) and encaustic.

Heritage High School’s Kate Bryant is a state champion gymnast who is also an entertaining dancer. Bryant, a junior at the Littleton school who was third in the all around on Nov. 4, won two Class 5A individual state championships on the final day of the three-day state meet on Nov. 6 at Thornton High School. She won the vault competition with a 9.9 and she also was the champion in floor exercise with a 9.775 score. Heritage coach Andrea Schmidt said Bryant is a talented and dedicated gymnast. “Kate has such a positive attitude and a great spirit,” said Schmidt. “She is quiet but will often make her teammates and coaches smile by dancing before her routines.” Bryant says dancing helps her relax. “I started dancing during meets a couple years ago,” Bryant tells Colorado Community Media. “I really struggled with competing, and dancing kind of just took some of the seriousness out of an extremely nerve-racking sport. Surprisingly, it improves my focus.” Bryant said she usually does macarena, sprinkler or shake dance moves. “It quickly caught on with the team and it’s easy to see how much

Honestly I was just glad the meet was over because it was really fun but it was really stressful, because once it was over it was a release and we could celebrate as a team.” Her dancing translates into good gymnastic performances. “I basically had to tell myself at the state meet not to over think it

With the football season still ongoing with semifinal games set for Nov. 27, the high school winter sports seasons began with practices on Nov. 15. However, for Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch, that means the boys and girls basketball teams will have to be flexible because of damage to the gym floor due to a boiler leak. Also in Highlands Ranch, the gym floors at Rock Canyon and Highlands Ranch high schools were impaired in the summer when a heavy rainstorm coupled with roof repairs resulted in damage. The repairs

have been completed at both schools and the gyms are in full operational mode. Rock Canyon’s girls volleyball team did not host a home match all season. Highlands Ranch’s volleyball team had a home match to end the regular season and got to host a regional tournament. Highlands Ranch entertained Rock Canyon in the final regular season volleyball match and both teams celebrated senior night. “Unfortunately our gym flooded a few weeks ago and caused quite a bit of damage,” said Valor sports information manager Paige Stingley. “We’ve had to get creative in our efforts to carry on practices for our winter teams. “Wrestling will continue to practice in the wrestling room, as there was no damage from the water in there. Our boys team will be

practicing at South Suburban Rec Center early in the mornings, while our girls team will alternate between having individual skill practices during studentathletes’ off periods, and holding shorter-length team practices in our small gym in the afternoons. It will certainly require us to be creative and flexible this season.” Valor Christian’s girls basketball team defeated Regis Jesuit of Aurora to win last season’s state championship. The Eagles hockey team is the defending state champs. ThunderRidge of Highlands Ranch won the 2021 boys basketball title and Cherry Creek of Greenwood Village is the defending girls state swimming champions. Pomona of Arvada won last season’s boys wrestling championship with Parkerarea Ponderosa the runnerup.

Currently, CHC Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Brumbaugh said the way insurance companies manage mental health makes it hard for families to afford proper care. Creating more virtual options for rural communities is also a solution, Zaslow said. Rebecca Doughty — program director of Four Corners Youth Clinics, a member of the Colorado Association of School-Based Health Clinics — said a shortage of trained psychologists and staff is a major problem in rural communities. Zaslow said having the ability to speak to qualified professionals without having to drive to Aurora would help get help to the young people struggling beyond the Front Range. Dr. Jenna Glover, a Children’s clinical psychologist, said the playbook the panel is introducing offers tangible information that will show lawmakers how they can begin to repair a broken system. Glover and members of the panel are urging the public to push lawmakers at all levels to start making mental health care for youth a priority.

On a dirt road in rural Elbert County about 10 miles east of Parker, a blue pickup truck drives toward Peachy Farms, a farm-animal rescue, education and therapy center. The bed of the truck is piled high with bright orange Halloween pumpkins. Behind the wheel is Mimi Nouri. Nouri is the founder of Lone Treebased Garden to Farm, a nonprofit that seeks to prevent food waste by providing local farms with excess produce from residential gardens. Once she arrives, Katrina Wright, owner and operator of Peachy Farms, starts cutting up the pump-

kins. She is surrounded by over 100 animals including pigs, goats, llamas, alpacas, horses, emus, ducks, chickens, quail, and more. They have been receiving produce deliveries from Nouri for about a month. Nouri started Garden to Farm in the early summer of 2021, as the result of an apple tree in her backyard producing an abundance of fruit. She was inspired to do something to prevent the apples from going to waste. “Why am I not donating this and helping the smaller, rural farming communities that we have here in Colorado?” she thought. Nouri started making calls to local farms, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Four farms in the area welcomed the extra produce as feed for their animals. “[The farms] were like, ‘We love it, we need the help, please bring it to us,’” recalls Nouri.

Nouri wants to make as big an impact as possible. She posted on NextDoor, Facebook, and Instagram, asking neighbors to donate their excess garden produce as well. Then, she thought ahead to fall and Halloween. “I knew we were going to have tons of pumpkins,” she says. She put out another post asking neighbors for their carved pumpkins, even offering to pick them up herself. “On Halloween night, my phone blew up,” says Nouri. She has collected over 50 pumpkins to donate. Peachy Farm, at 42900 Vista Ridge Road, is grateful for the extra food, especially now. “This time of year is when it slows way down,” says Wright. “Our volunteers disappear, our funds get depleted, and so it’s great to have food come in to feed (the animals), because it gets very costly, very

fast.” Nouri is thrilled to see the animals enjoying the pumpkins that would have otherwise been discarded.
