Brewery taps Littleton as new home Breckenridge to build 12-acre facility along river By Jennifer Smith

jsmith@ourcoloradonews.com Breckenridge Brewery’s announcement that it plans to relocate its Denver brewery to Littleton has city officials excited, to put it mildly. “I’m buying the first round!” City Manager Michael Penny said. Breckenridge is the fifth-largest brewer based in Colorado and growing. For the third straight year, it posted more than 20 percent growth, with 2012 results reaching 30 percent — stretching

the limits of its current space at 471 Kalamath in Denver. “Once we were aware that they were interested, we spent a lot of time just talking to them about the direction the city was going, explaining about all the work we’ve done, showing them the city council goals, talking about the comprehensive plan update and generally just conveying all the excitement and enthusiasm for the future,” Penny said. “It’s what they want to be part of. They also really liked the location.” Assuming all goes as planned, Breckenridge will break ground on a$20 million project this fall near the South Platte River. It is expected to open in the fall of 2014 on 12 acres north of Aspen Grove and south of Hudson Gardens,

adjacent to Reynolds Landing — exponentially increasing the river corridor’s cool factor, says Penny. “With the vitality of Main Street and the powerhouse of Aspen Grove, the addition of Breckenridge Brewery will shift Littleton toward a local destination driver,” he said. “Having a brewery, along with the other amenities we have, will begin to turn Front Range heads south, and have people saying, ‘You know what, instead, I’d rather go to Littleton’. … it’s a status statement which helps define the future of Littleton.” The Feb. 1 announcement came on the heels of one made by Alamo Drafthouse, Aspen Grove’s new movie theater, which firmed up its grand opening date to March 25.

Even something as basic as dialing a telephone can take on new dimensions as seniors gradually lose the sight they’ve relied on their entire lives. “It’s interesting when you have always been sighted and you have to cook,” said Margaret Cross. “It’s hard to know when something’s done. Littleton City Attorney Kirsten Crawford was placed on paid administrative leave, apparently at her request, after city council met in an hour-long executive session Jan. 29. Mayor Debbie Brinkman asked Crawford and City Manager Michael Penny to wait in another room during the session. When they reconvened, Councilor Bruce Stahlman made a motion to place her on leave, pursuant to her request, until further notice. The motion directed her to remain available Crawford to the city during normal business hours. Councilor Phil Cernanec seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Penny said no acting city attorney has been named, and Kristen Schledorn remains as assistant city attorney. Asked what the way forward looks like for the office, Penny replied: “Kirsten Crawford is on voluntary administrative leave, so there is currently no ‘way forward’ for the city attorney’s office. Ms. Crawford is still employed by the city as the city attorney.” “This is a personnel issue, and I have no comment,” was Brinkman’s only response. Crawford was appointed on March 6, 2012. “The city council is thrilled to welcome Kirsten as our city attorney,” Brinkman said at the time. “She is a skilled litigator with exceptional experience in municipal law. Over the past three years, she has done exemplary work as our assistant and then acting city attorney. Kirsten is as passionate about her work as she is committed to Littleton, and we are looking forward to a

The center in Littleton offers training and classes for vision-impaired people of all ages, with a positive philosophy that with proper training and opportunity, blind people can compete on terms of equality with their sighted peers. “The Colorado Center for the Blind is committed to changing the experience of older blind and visually impaired persons from frustration to independence,” reads CCB’s program description. “With education and training, these seniors can obtain
