Korean BBQ Chef A new at-home dinner service offering authentic Korean cuisine has launched to serve the Denver-metro area.

The business is the brainchild of mother-son duo, Sunny and MJ Hong, who are Korean-born American immigrants.

How it works is the client collaborates with the chef “to organize a customized menu in accordance with your preferences,” states the website.

“The chef will arrive to your home at the agreed-upon time on your service date.”

The menu includes a variety of meats, soups, appetizers and traditional Korean side dish options. Options for gluten free, vegan and other dietary restrictions are also available upon request.

CLOSINGS Sugar Bakeshop Sugar Bakeshop, 277 Broadway in Denver’s Baker neighborhood, has closed. It opened in 2008.

According to Westword, “the lease was up on the space, and owner Natalie Slevin decided it was time to make a shift; she’s planning to focus on her popular creation ot vegan popsters, with a goal of making them a national hit.”

Turin Bicycles A longtime bike shop that borders Denver’s Speer and Capitol Hill neighborhoods is closing in April after more than 50 years in business.

Turin Bicycles, 700 Lincoln St., made the announcement in early March on social media and its website.

“The ride has been amazing for every one of us who have had the honor of serving you at Turin,” states the post. “We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

According to the post, the closure comes as Alan Fine, founder and owner, is preparing for retirement.

Fine opened Turin Bicycles in 1971 near Denver’s Grant and Sherman streets area, and relocated to the bike shop’s Seventh Avenue and Lincoln Street location in 1991.

Turin Bicycles carried a wide variety of bikes and gear, and also offered various bike services.

Though the shop is closing at its current location, two longtime employees, Mike Stejskal and Dave Wileden, “are working to re-home the business and

hope to return next year in a new location,” states the post on Turin Bicycles’ website.

MILESTONES Denver Beer Co. As Denver Beer Co. celebrated the one-year anniversary of opening its third taproom — which is located at 2425 South Downing St. in Denver’s Rosedale neighborhood — the brewery made a mid-March announcement that it would be opening a fourth location in Lowry.

Charlie Berger and Patrick Crawford opened their first Denver Beer Co. brewery and taproom in Denver’s Highland neighborhood in 2007. That was followed with Denver Beer Co.’s production brewery called Canworks in Sunnyside, then Olde Town Arvada’s Denver Beer Co. in 2017.

The Rosedale location features Denver Beer Co.’s craft beer — including year-round favorites and seasonal brews — and a variety of food options from DBC Eats Comfort Food as well as the onsite ice cream shop, Yum Yums Ice Cream.

The recently announced fourth taproom will be located at 7070 E. Lowry Blvd. within the Exchange at Boulevard One development in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood. It will include a brewery, taproom, an outdoor patio and garden and an in-house restaurant concept.

A groundbreaking is expected to take place in April with plans for a grand opening in late 2022.

MISCELLANEOUS Twist & Shout In early March, Westword reported that the Twist & Shout owners sold the record store to a longtime manager.

Paul and Jill Epstein decided to retire after owning and operating Twist & Shout for 33 years, Westword reported.

In a March 7 Facebook post, Paul Epstein wrote: “We have understood for a while that our ability to retire had to dovetail with a plan to keep Twist & Shout going far into the future. We believe that the store has become part of Denver life, and if it were to disappear, a huge hole in the cultural and musical life of our city would appear.”

Patrick Brown, the new owner, was hired to work at Twist & Shout 30 years ago. He has been the store’s manager for 29. In the above-mentioned Facebook post, Epstein added that Brown “assured me that nothing would change. The employees, product mix, special events, policies and overall vibe of our beloved Twist & Shout will remain the same … his energy will carry the store way into the future. I’m excited for the store and have no trepidation about this move.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide resume in-person gatherings STAFF REPORT

Beginning April 1, all congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses across the globe will resume its in-person meetings.

Resuming in-person meetings coincides with two global events being held in all 120,000 congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The first is a special lecture entitled, “Where Can You Find Real Hope?” Most congregations will host the lecture, which is scheduled for April 10.

ON THE COVER

The second event takes place on April 15. This is Jehovah’s Witnesses’ largest gathering of the year, during which attendees commemorate the death of Jesus Christ.

Both gatherings will take place in-person with live speakers at local Kingdom Halls.

For the past two years, Jehovah’s Witnesses have been meeting virtually, and buildings for worship have remained closed globally due to the risks associated with meeting in person during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Warren Village hosts annual fundraiser gala STAFF REPORT

Comedian Sam Clark hosts benefit for theater scholarship fund STAFF REPORT

The Staenberg - Loup Jewish Community Center’s (JCC Denver) Mizel Arts and Culture Center is hosting a comedy event to benefit the Wolf Theatre Academy Scholarship Fund.

“The Tight Five: Original Standup Comedy Show” takes place at 7 p.m. April 21 at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center’s Elaine Wolf Theatre, 350 S. Dahlia St., in Denver.

The show will be hosted by Den-

ver native Sam Clark, a rising star comedian, writer and filmmaker.

He is a Wolf Theatre Academy alumnus. During the show, a dozen never-before-seen comedians will debut their tight five - which is five minutes of original material that was developed during an eightweek comedy writing session at the JCC Denver.

Parkinson’s is a ‘disease of everyone’ Fundraiser set for June 11 will include Denver

Every nine minutes, someone in the United States is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

It is the fastest-growing neurological disease, but there is much less known about it when compared to other diseases, said Lisa Cone, an advocate for the Parkinson’s Foundation who also serves as vice chair of the organization’s People with Parkinson’s Council.

“It’s such a different disease to live with because it affects everything,” Cone said. “Every body system is connected to Parkinson’s symptoms.”

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive and degenerative brain disorder that affects a person’s muscle movement. While the disease itself is not fatal, its complications can be serious and greatly diminish quality of life. The most obvious motor, or movement, symptoms include tremors, slowing and stiffening movements.

Parkinson’s also includes a wide range of non-movement, or non-motor, symptoms that can include fatigue, cognitive changes such as problems with attention, and mood disorders such as depression, anxiety and apathy.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 50% to 80% of those with Parkinson’s eventually experience Parkinson’s disease dementia as their disease progresses.

Additionally, because there is no standard diagnostic test for Parkinson’s, misdiagnosis can happen.

“Some people suffer for years” before knowing they have Parkinson’s, Cone said.

The Parkinson’s Foundation reports that more than 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease, and nearly a million of them live in the United States. Within the foundation’s Rocky Mountain chapter, which consists of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, 17,980 people are living with Parkinson’s.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, incidence of Parkinson’s increases with age, but an estimated 4% of people with Parkinson’s were diagnosed younger than age 50. Men are 1.5 times more likely than women to have Parkinson’s disease.

But Cone wants people to know that Parkinson’s disease is a “disease of everyone,” she said, not just men older than 65.

“It can happen to any demographic no matter age, gender or ethnicity,” Cone said.

Cone is a Lakewood resident who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2008 when she was 45. A former executive in the health care sector, she was the first to notice her symptoms of

Parkinson’s, which consisted of cognitive decline rather than a decline in motor skills. She has been an active advocate since 2012 when she had to go on long-term disability.

The economic impact of Parkinson’s should also be considered, Cone said.

“It is underfunded compared to other diseases, but the economic burden does matter,” she said.

Cone is referring to the many health care costs associated with Parkinson’s.

“Treatment, Social Security payments and lost income is estimated to be nearly $52 billion per year in the United States,” states the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Medications alone, for one person, can cost an average of $2,500 a year, and therapies, including physical therapy, can be even more costly.

“And (Parkinson’s) patients can’t work,” Cone added.

Some Parkinson’s patients must take 20 to 30 pills a day to mitigate their Parkinson’s symptoms, said Dr. David VanSickle, a Denver-area neurosurgeon, in a previous interview.

VanSickle specializes in a surgery called deep brain stimulation, commonly referred to as DBS, which helps patients with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. The operation can help most motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, but people with Parkinson’s must still take medication for the non-motor symptoms.

Others also find relief with a regular exercise regime that focuses on neuroprotection, which helps protect neurons in the brain from degeneration, and neuroplasticity, which helps with getting different areas of the brain to do the work.

Aside from DBS and exercise that may alleviate symptoms, there is limited direct treatment,

and there currently is no cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Research is being conducted to determine whether genetic or environmental factors could cause Parkinson’s, but no definitive cause is known as of today.

“Not having that hampers finding a cure,” Cone said.

One such study is the Parkinson’s Foundation’s PD GENEration: Mapping the Future of Parkinson’s Disease. Through this study, the foundation offers genetic testing for clinically relevant Parkinson’s-related genes and genetic counseling at no cost for people with Parkinson’s disease.

“A cure would be fabulous, but for today, education and care teams are important resources,” Cone said.

And “awareness is super important,” she said.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. The theme for this year is #FutureOfPD with a goal to “raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease, the Parkinson’s Foundation and encourage people to take action to impact the Future of PD,” states the foundation’s website.

The Parkinson’s Foundation is a national nonprofit that has regional chapters to serve people nationwide. Its mission is to provide a better quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease by improving care and advancing research toward a cure.

“I love that the foundation is there for everyone’s journey,” said Alexis Rodriguez, the Parkinson’s Foundation’s west regional director. “People need resources today, while we work for the future of a world without PD.” The Parkinson’s Foundation offers a variety of free resourcefocused and educational virtual events and webinars. These

include Live Fitness Fridays, the Home Social Engagement Series and Parkinson’s 101: What You and Your Family Should Know and Expert Briefings.

An upcoming fundraising event is the foundation’s Parkinson’s Revolution. This is a cycling event “that combines passion, determination and community to generate awareness and advance our mission toward a cure,” said Francesca Villa, national director of fundraising events for the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Parkinson’s Revolution takes place nationwide June 11, with Denver being one of 35 cities hosting an in-person Parkinson’s Revolution.

So “Denver is a key part,” Villa said, adding that the goal is to have 2,000 participants nationwide, with about 50 to 60 of them in the Denver area.

Locally, people can participate in-person on stationary bikes at the Sloan’s Lake High Ride Cycle, 1711 Sheridan Blvd. A, in Edgewater. Participants who prefer an outdoor ride can participate virtually, anywhere they’d like. Villa said some people have expressed interest in meeting up with a group and biking around Sloan’s Lake, which is right across the street from the studio.

Riders of all abilities are welcome, and in-studio participants have the option between two rides. The first will be Parkinson’s-friendly and the second will be high-intensity.

It is free to register, and there is no fundraising minimum or requirements, but participants are encouraged to fundraise.

Funds raised directly support the Parkinson’s Foundation’s mission, its Centers of Excellence that provide comprehensive care to people living with Parkinson’s disease and its various programs such as the PD GENEration.

Funds also allow the Parkinson’s Foundation to award grants to local community organizations such as the Parkinson’s Association of the Rockies in Denver, Parkinson’s Pointe in Centennial and the Parkinson’s Community Center in Aurora.

Last year, Parkinson’s Revolution took place in 29 cities and 1,100 participants raised more than $450,000 for the Parkinson’s Foundation, said Alicia Chapdelaine, coordinator for the Parkinson’s Revolution.

Cone’s team represents three families that all have a loved one with — or lost a loved one to — Parkinson’s disease.

“There are so many things you can do that would help a person with Parkinson’s,” Cone said. “It takes an army to take on Parkinson’s.”

Denver Art Museum exhibit runs through May 8

About 500 years ago, Hernán Cortés and his conquistadors captured Tenochtitlán, the great Aztec city known today as Mexico City.

While this history is well documented, Victoria Lyall, the Jan and Frederick Mayer curator of art of the ancient Americas at the Denver Art Museum, and Terezita Romo, an independent curator, did not want to talk about Cortés.

“It’s time to reconsider the Indigenous woman who was the heart of this story,” Lyall said.

Lyall is referring to a young woman ,named Malinche, whose legend portrays her as both a betrayer of her npeople and the mother of Mexico.

Lyall and Romo are two of three coacurators of the Denver Art Museum’s exhibit, “Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche.” The project was about six years in the making, originating in Denver. It opened in February and will end on May 8.

Following its Denver run, the show will head to Albuquerque and then San Antonio.

A purpose of the show is to revitalize Malinche’s legacy, Lyall said.

“For five centuries, Malinche has remained a contentious figure, revered and reviled on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border,” Lyall said in a news release. “She is a historical figure about which very little factual and biographical documentation exists. In examining and presenting the legacy of Malinche from the 16th century through today, we hope to illuminate the multifaceted image of a woman unable to share her own story, allowing visitors to form their own impressions of who she was and the struggles she faced.”

Malinche was born near the Gulf Coast of Mexico and was enslaved at a young age, perhaps between the ages of 11 to 16. It is believed she was eventually sold to a Mayan chief in Tabasco, a southern Mexican state with a northern coastline on the Gulf of Mexico that is near the Yucatán Peninsula.

By the time Cortés arrived in 1519, Malinche was fluent in both Yucatec and Nahuatl, the languages of the Mayan and Aztec people, respectively.

Molly Brown House exhibit sheds new light on sinking of Titanic — and a famous survivor

Molly Brown: Myth vs. Fact

Shortly before she boarded the HRS Titanic in the spring of 1912, wealthy socialite and activist Margaret Tobin Brown played tourist in Egypt. The 45-year-old Denverite explored the pyramids by camel and shopped in a Cairo bazaar, where she bought a 3-inch high, turquoise-colored statue called an ushabti. Purportedly, such ancient tomb ornaments brought good luck. She would need it.

On the night of April 14, Brown was reading in bed in her Titanic stateroom when she felt a jolt overhead. The world’s largest luxury ocean liner had just collided with a towering iceberg. The ship sank in less than three hours, killing 1,500 passengers and crew. Brown was among the 706 who survived.

Today, that ushabti is one of many fascinating items on display in a new exhibition, “Heroine of the Titanic,” at the Molly Brown House Museum in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Perhaps the ushabti really saved Brown’s life — or perhaps it was her own level-headed behavior during that terrifying night. Brown was far more remarkable than most people know. She spoke five languages, studied acting in Paris under Sarah Bernhardt, crusaded for women’s voting rights, ran for Senate and won the French Legion of Honor for her relief work during World War I. Clearly, Brown, who lived from 1867 to 1932, was a fascinating person in her own right. To prove the point, the museum is voyaging back in time to that fateful April of 1912 — in a quest to reveal not only fresh insights about the sinking, but also about a woman who may rank as Denver’s most famous but least understood.

Movie props, items salvaged from the wreck and a virtual time machine The Molly Brown House Museum show, which runs from April 1 to Sept. 25, is displaying Titanic-related items from its own collection — such as an anxious telegram Brown received from her son when she was aboard the rescue ship, Carpathia. Thirty items loaned by the Branson Titanic Museum in Missouri include artifacts salvaged from the wreck, discovered in 1985.

Also on display are props from the 1997 film, “Titanic,” and the entertaining but highly inaccurate 1964 movie musical, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.”

But Andrea Malcomb, the museum’s director, is even more excited about another artifact. In

early 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the museum acquired a century-old scrapbook from descendants of the Brown family. Created in 1914, by Brown’s teenage niece, Helen Tobin, who was living in her aunt’s household at the time, the scrapbook contains newspaper interviews, photos and never-before-seen family documents. It was donated by the Vollrath/Marenholz family.

“The scrapbook is a game-changer for us,” said Malcomb. “This comes from a period in Margaret’s life where we were missing a lot of information.”

The fragile, yellowed pages offer fresh details about not only the Titanic disaster, but also Brown’s involvement in the Women’s Suffrage Movement and her 1914 run for the U.S. Senate.

According to museum curator Stephanie McGuire, the scrapbook functioned as a virtual timemachine, allowing her to immerse herself in the world of 1912.

“Putting together these exhibits is a dream,” she said. “We’ve built this whole exhibit off primary sources, rather than relying on books about it.”

Added Malcomb, “There are so many myths surrounding Margaret. This 110th anniversary of the sinking enables us to strip away myth and show the truth.”

Harmful caricatures of Brown and other Western women And of myths, there are many.

To set the record straight, Margaret Brown was never called “Molly,” except by Hollywood scriptwriters. As a baby, she did not float down a rushing river in her cradle.

She never worked in a saloon or accidentally burned up all her husband’s hard-earned cash by hiding it in a wood stove. She did not use

expressions like “Gol’ durn.”

Dr. Kristen Iversen, author of the highly-regarded biography, “Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth,” is dismayed by these fallacies. Caricaturing Western women like Molly Brown and Baby Doe Tabor is dangerous, she warned, “because the reality of these women is erased.”

As a grad student in history at the University of Denver, Iversen was astounded to discover a treasure trove of old clippings and other documents that put the lie to the popular conception of Brown as an ignorant saloon girl.

“She was really smart and really motivated and absolutely undaunted by the things the culture said were inappropriate for women to do,” Iversen said.

The maritime tragedy that never should have happened What of the tragedy that made Brown famous? Her compassionate treatment of other passengers, many of them impoverished immigrants, won her the title, “Heroine of the Titanic.” Newspapers rushed to interview her and world renown soon followed.

According to Iversen, Brown was an excellent writer and also published her own accounts of the ordeal. She especially wanted to expose human errors that led to the tragedy.

Brown strongly criticized the ship’s excessive speed and lack of safety drills. In Iversen’s biography, Brown commented, “the Titanic disaster was a tragedy as unnecessary as running the Brown Palace into Pike’s Peak.”

Although Brown didn’t have access to current scientific research, in a larger sense, she was probably right.

The tragic sinking of the Titanic has special relevance today, in

light of tragedies like the 2018 and 2019 crashes of Boeing planes in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Just as Boeing’s new management took dangerous shortcuts in their race to beat the European-made Airbus to market, evidence from the wreck of the Titanic suggests that competition between two British shipping lines — White Star, which built the Titanic and arch-rival Cunard — may have played a role in the sinking.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) surmised as much, after analyzing 40 iron rivets salvaged from the wreck. According to the NIST website, the Titanic’s hull was secured with 3 million rivets made from lower grade iron with a high percentage of slag. At the time, there was a worldwide shortage of quality iron and the shipwrights — under pressure to get the boat into the water — probably settled for what was available. But the slag-filled rivets grew brittle from exposure to the icy North Atlantic.

On impact with the iceberg, the rivets popped their tops, opening five of the ship’s “water tight” compartments. The ship quickly sank.

The speed of the sinking was long attributed to a 300-foot gash in the hull ripped by the iceberg. Exploration of the wreck proved that this never happened.

Like many Titanic survivors, Brown was haunted by the experience for the rest of her life. But she still managed to cram in a staggering number of experiences by the time she died at age 65 — 20 years after the Titanic sank. When she wasn’t working with Denver Judge Ben Lindsey to reform harsh juvenile laws or standing up for the rights of miners in Ludlow, she was in Switzerland, learning how to yodel.

It all feels a bit daunting. How did she have time? One thing is certain: Margaret Tobin Brown never had time to be dull.

As the Spaniards traveled inland toward Tenochtitlán, it was Malinche who played a key role as Cortés’ interpreter and cultural translator.

The exhibit at the Denver Art Museum boasts 68 artworks created by 38 artists from the U.S., Mexico and France. Among them is Denver’s own Emanuel Martinez, whose work can be found all over the Denver-metro area, as well as in other states.

There are many notable artists being featured in the exhibit. For example, Ramos Martinez, a Mexican painter who lived from 1871 to 1946 and is considered by some to be a founding father of modern Mexican art. Another is Sandy Rodriguez, a Los Angeles-based Chicana artist and researcher.

“As a figure embraced by Chicana writers and artists, Malinche is the subject of a narrative that had been reframed and recently invigorated to reflect a Chicana feminism that resists male-dominated interpretations of her life and significance,” Romo said in the news release.

While Malinche’s legacy is maligned by many — the word malinchista means to be a traitor to one’s own people — many also revere it.

Malinche eventually became Cortés’ mistress and whether complacent to it or not, she gave birth to his first-born son. That child became the first-known mestizo, a term used to describe one of a mixed race, particularly, Spanish and Indigenous descent. This makes Malinche “the symbolic progenitor of a modern Mexican nation, built on both Indigenous and Spanish heritage,” the news release said.

The Denver Art Museum exhibition begins with a video that introduces Malinche to visitors. It establishes the historical, cultural, chronological and geographical contexts behind the invasion of the Spaniards and the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521.

The exhibit is divided into five different sections that demonstrate five identities that have been linked to Malinche during the past 500 years.

The sections include: • Malinche as La Lengua/The Interpreter • Malinche as La Indígena/The Indigenous Woman • Malinche as La Madre de Mestizaje/The Mother of a Mixed Race • Malinche as La Traidora/The Traitor • Malinche as Chicana/Contemporary Reclamations.

Malinche continues to emerge as a figure of interest, Lyall said, adding that her story is timeless. But her story has never been documented in her own words, Lyall added, so she is one of many women whose voices, historically, have been marginalized or told only by men.

Additionally, prior to 1848 when the U. S. and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the southwestern part of Colorado was Mexico. Today, at least 30% of Denver’s population identifies with Latino culture.

Malinche is “a figure they know well,” Lyall said. But even visitors to the Denver Art Museum who may not know who Malinche is will enjoy the exhibit, she added. “Once they hear her story, they will be hooked.”

Brown’s heavily-fictionalized life story into a Broadway musical chose the nickname, Molly, because it was easier to sing. But during her lifetime, no one ever addressed Margaret Tobin Brown as Molly.

FACT: Margaret Tobin moved to Leadville in 1886 at age 18 to keep house for her brother, Daniel, who was hard at work in the mines. Money was tight so Margaret Tobin got a job at a local department store, where she sewed carpets, draperies and shades.

In addition to the exhibit at the Denver Art Museum, other local institutions also have exhibitions that deal with La Malinche.

“Malinalli on the Rocks: A Latinx and Chicanx perspective of La Malinche” Museo de las Americas, 861 Santa Fe Dr. in Denver, is presenting “Malinalli on the Rocks.”

This exhibit features 11 Latinx and Chicanx artists in Colorado and offers the opportunity to explore and re-discover Malinche’s story. The “exhibit will challenge us to reflect on how she should be remembered; what she did and represents, immortalized in the artists’ interpretations,” states the website.

Artworks include paintings, installations and mixed media works.

It is curated by Maruca G. Salazar, former executive director of Museo de las Americas.

“If we remove the patriarchal lens and Eurocentric vantage, what we confront is a powerful presence, a woman that survived (and) overcame adversity, fulfilling the destiny foretold to her parents the night that she was born,” Salazar said in a news release. “She is Malinalli Tenepal, the wild weed and the one that talks too much with enthusiasm and fluidity.”

According to a news release, the exhibit will also include “a remembrance piece for the late artist Alicia Cardenas since she was going to be part of this exhibition.” Cardenas owned Sol Tribe Custom Tattoo and Body Piercing, 56 Broadway, and is the murder victim of a Dec. 27 shooting that spanned Denver and Lakewood.

“Malintzin: Unraveled and Rewoven” The exhibit, “Malintzin: Unraveled and Rewoven,” is a partnership between the Latino Cultural Art Center (LCAC), the University of ColoradoDenver, the CU Denver College of Arts & Media and the Denver Art Museum.

“This show exhibits current works of art, craft and design from upcycled materials to unpack a woman whose legacy has been reinterpreted and reimagined by artistic, scholar and activist communities across the U.S.-Mexican border,” states a news release on CU Denver College of Arts & Media’s website.

This installation, which complements the exhibit at the Denver Art Museum, includes fresh artwork by Denver artists Lilian Lara and Norbeto Mojardin, and CU Denver College of Arts & Media professor Bryan Leister and his students; as well as pieces from the LCAC’s Abarca Family Collection, including never before exhibited textiles. It is Lara’s curatorial debut.

“I found it important to call this show ‘Malintzin’ to use the honorific given to her by her own people as a sign of respect,” Lara said. “I want young Latina women to see this powerful woman who took a horrible situation, and through sheer wit and determination, became an immortal figure in Mexican history.”

“Malintzin: Unraveled and Rewoven” is free and open to the public through May 1. It is located at the CU Denver Experience Gallery (formerly Next Stage Gallery), 1025 13th St., which is in the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

MYTH: Molly Brown was an ignorant yokel who couldn’t read or write.

FACT: Margaret Tobin grew up in a hardworking family of Irish immigrants in Hannibal, Missouri. She went to school until age 13, when she was expected to get a job to help support the household. As a young bride in Leadville and later in Denver, Margaret Tobin Brown hired tutors to further educate herself and her children. She ended up speaking five languages.

MYTH: Molly Brown was a gold digger.

FACT: After meeting the modestly paid mining engineer J.J. Brown at a Catholic church picnic in 1886, Margaret Tobin wrote, “I wanted a rich man but I loved Jim Brown.” They married the same year.

MYTH: The Browns struck gold on their claim and became wealthy overnight.

FACT: In 1893, J.J. Brown’s employer, the Ibex mining company, struck a rich vein of gold in the Little Jonny mine. By then, J.J. and Margaret Brown had been married for seven years and had two children.

MYTH: Denver’s elite Sacred Thirty-Six, controlled by socialite Louise Crawford Hill, shunned Molly Brown and her husband, J.J., as ignorant upstarts.

FACT: After moving from Leadville to Denver in 1893, J.J. and Margaret Brown quickly became respected members of Denver society and at times, attended some of the same events as the Crawford-Hills.

However, Margaret Brown’s progressive political views differed drastically from the Hills, who were publishers of the conservative newspaper The Denver Republican.

Visitors are welcome to contribute a six-word poem to the exhibit.

Another feature is a digital, interactive app that includes a digitized viewing of Leslie Tillett’s tapestry, “The Conquest of Mexico,” which is housed in the museum’s Art of the Ancient Americas collection.

The digital, interactive app — created by CU Denver College of Arts & Media professor Bryan Leister and his students — offers “a modern interpretation of Cortés’ 36-month long campaign in Mexico between 1519 and 1521.”

hile Denver Public Schools students are getting ready for their spring break, I am already thinking about the students who will be graduating in a couple of months.

This means it is that time of year again to start putting together our 2022 grads package.

And I need your help.

Here is what I need to run this feature: • Full name of the graduate.

• A headshot photo — a senior picture, or even a selfie of the grad in their cap and gown would work just fine.

• The high school the student is graduating from. The school must be located in Denver, or the graduate must live in Den-

ver if attending a school outside of the city of Denver. Students who are homeschooled or attending an online/virtual school are also welcome to participate.

• After high school plans. These plans do not have to be college. Perhaps the grad is joining the military, taking a gap year or entering into a profession. Whatever their immediate future plans are, let me know.

Getting together How to talk to your child to protect them from abuse with the D10 community

A

s the councilperson for District 10, one of my goals is to increase community participation in our democracy. Our democracy is stronger when we all participate, and I have seen firstGUEST hand that one person can make a difference in our community. I COLUMN advocated for a bill that became law in 2018, and because of my years of advocacy at the state level, our state elected officials decided to name the bill after me. Not everyone can have a law with their name on it in their list of accomplishments, but we can all participate in our own Councilmember way.

After a tumultuous few years Chris Hinds domestically, preserving our democracy seems more important and challenging now than in recent memory. We have had protests, civil rights conversations, global unrest, and during all of that, we’ve been wrestling with a global pandemic. This pandemic has shifted our definition of normal for more than two years, and we’ve all had to make incredible adjustments to every part of our lives. I think it’s a perfect time for us all to get to know our neighbors, form new connections to our city, and become more engaged in our government. That’s why our office is planning monthly events that will take place throughout District 10 from May through October.

These events are designed to encourage and increase civic engagement, and it will give our community yet another way to access their city councilmember and council office. These events will highlight District 10, and they will also provide a great two-way conversation so I can share some of my priorities and hear more about you and your priorities. And, while we’re coming together, let’s have some fun in the process.

pril is child abuse prevention month.

It is the month set aside to try and end child abuse.

Parents have many responsibilities when educating their children about life. One of GUEST the most important conversaCOLUMN tions to have with your child is a conversation about body safety. What is body safety, you ask? Body safety is teaching your children that their body is their own, and if anyone touches them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable, you want to know as soon as possible. This one piece of Julie Federico information can save your child from childhood sexual abuse and is key to abuse prevention.

I think parents overthink this topic, get scared, and then do not say anything to their children. But the best way to prevent child abuse is to talk about it before it happens — not after.

Taking a few steps to prevent child abuse is easy: Know who is watching your children, educate your child about body safety rules, and respond quickly if your child self-discloses information that someone has harmed them.

Contrary to what the media feeds families, children are usually harmed by people in their own family. About 93% of children who are harmed are harmed by someone they know.

Meaning, anyone is capable of harmful acts.

Most children are not harmed or abducted by someone at a store, but by someone sitting around your dining room table. Child abuse is all about access. Make a mental list of who has access to your children and who spends time with them alone when you are not there.

It is also highly likely that the parent introduced the child to their perpetrator. The parent left the child alone with the perpetrator without knowing they wouldn’t be OK. If you frequently leave your child alone with a close friend or family member, it is OK to say to that friend or family member, “I have spo-

ken with my children about ways to prevent child abuse. In our family, we have an open dialogue. My children will be reporting to me if someone they know is making them feel uncomfortable.” It does not have to be in those exact words, but saying something goes a long way to aid in child sexual abuse prevention.

Most friends and family members will respect the boundary you have set.

Kids of all ages institutively know abuse is wrong. If you give them permission to selfdisclose, they usually will. Remember, if you say nothing, your children will say nothing if something happens to them. They will take their cues from you, so be sure you speak out on this topic.

Children will understand this information at a very young age. You want to be the first person to talk to your child about child abuse, not the perpetrator. My daughter was about 18 months when I got the first proof of my children’s book, “Some Parts Are NOT for Sharing.” This is a child abuse prevention book, available in English and Spanish, for children 0-9 years old. I read it to my daughter, and while we were carving pumpkins one day, she asked me, “mom, do pumpkins have private parts?” I thought, I am really onto something here — she gets this. Your child can get it as well.

Parents struggle with how to prevent child abuse, but it is really very simple. Read my book to your children, have conversations about people who are in a caregiving role in their life and talk about your family relationships. Tell your children that it is OK to tell if anyone in the family hurts them. Tell them that you will not be angry and that you want to know as soon as possible. As your child grows, their questions will change. You will know when it is time to include more information than what is in the book.

Denver Paper Fashion Show pushes artists’ boundaries

Because “Project Runway” first aired in late 2004, Brielle Killip of Denver’s Cole neighborhood thought she was late in getting hooked on the reality TV show — considering she had watched it for the first time only a few months ago.

But something she and her longtime boyfriend, Chris Geissinger, were particularly attracted to in the show is its unconventional materials challenge. This is because Killip, a graphic designer, and Geissinger, who is in the construction field, have participated in the annual Denver Paper Fashion Show five times.

Add Jennifer Garber, who has a background in nursing and is a hobbyist knitter, to the team, and the trio has come up with quite an array of fashions through the years.

“It’s always great to share the time with them creating,” Killip said. “The three of us bring together interesting qualities that complement each other.”

The Denver Paper Fashion Show — which features haute couture fashions

made entirely from paper by Coloradoarea designers — is put on annually by the Denver chapter of The One Club for Creativity, a global nonprofit that exists to support all different types of creatives.

“I feel like everybody, in some form or fashion, is an artist,” said Lindsay Buemi, chief of staff for the One Club who co-manages the Denver Paper Fashion Show. “This is such an amazing event to bring together all these creatives.”

The Denver Paper Fashion Show is an all volunteer run event — including the models’ hair and makeup artists.

Proceeds from the event benefit the One Club’s programming, as well as Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, which is a nonprofit community organization that provides after-school arts programs for urban youth.

The first Denver Paper Fashion Show took place in 2004 and it has grown to be one of the largest in the country — if not unique to Denver. Because of COVID, the event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021. But the 2022 event, which took place on March 10 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, was spectacular, said Buemi.

“This event has continued to grow and push artistic boundaries through the paper medium,” she said. “Every year I’m astonished by this creative platform and its ability to bring together so many generations from

bourgeoning students to professional artists.”

This year, about 35 teams competed, which included a mix of professionals and students. Professionals, however, does not necessarily mean people who are employed in the fashion industry.

Though some of them are. Those entering as a professional run the gamut of architects to those employed in academia.

“We don’t want to limit creativity,” Buemi said. “So, there are no rules on what you can create.”

However, 90% of the fashions must be made of paper, including props and

accessories. One Club partners with Kelly Spicers, a paper distributor based in Aurora, to get the paper, which is donated by a number of paper mills.

Each year, the Denver Paper Fashion Show presents a broad theme. This year’s theme was “Chiaroscuro,” which is making use of bold contrasts between light and dark.

Night, which was inspired by a “glimmer that you catch out of the corner of your eye, something floating through the darkness of night,” Killip said.

The second entry was Fire in My Soul, which was inspired by the “fire that burns inside each one of us, fueling our passions and desire,” Killip said.

This year’s first-place winner was Veronica Dewey, of Longmont, for her design, Nature’s Shadow. This design was inspired by the “darker side of Mother Nature,” Dewey said.

Dewey has participated in the Denver Paper Fashion Show four times.

The first time was for the first fashion show in 2004. Then, because she was busy raising her children, Dewey took a long hiatus until 2018.

The fashion show “really pushes your creative boundaries,” Dewey said.

“It’s a tough competition because of the high level of creativity. Every year there’s more and more creative stuff that shows up. But that’s what’s fun about it.”

Dewey spent 19 years as a graphic designer, but for the past four years, she has been transitioning into a career in costume design and construction.

She is now employed in the University of Colorado-Boulder’s theater department.

The Paper Fashion Show has helped Dewey with her career transition, she said, adding it has given her the opportunity to test her skills, get portfolio work and put her designs in front of an audience.

Designers generally have about three months to design their fashions. No doubt, it’s a lot of hard work that goes into them.

“Those of us driven to make this type of art really have a passion for it,” Dewey said.

Dewey added taht It is all worth it for the moment that her design comes out on the runway.

“It’s like this magic moment when everything comes together,” she said.

The Denver Paper Fashion Show is truly a unique event that is elevating Denver’s creative scene, Dewey said.

Geissinger agreed. In fact, participating in the Denver Paper Fashion Show has inspired he and Killip to take other arts courses, such as pottery, he said.

“The Denver area is very creative,” Geissinger said, adding that there is everything one can imagine here, including working with iron to sketching and glass blowing.

“Denver can certainly hold its own compared to other cities when it comes to creativity,” he said.

Denver Zoo launches emergency fund for Ukrainian zoos STAFF REPORT

The Denver Zoo, 2300 Steele St., has launched an emergency fund to help Ukrainian zoos.

The Denver Zoo’s Wildlife Emergency Fund will provide emergency assistance to the zoos in Ukraine that have been impacted by the Russian invasion. Funds raised will support the organizations, zookeepers and other personnel working in Ukraine and bordering nations that are providing food, transportation, veterinary care and evacuation for the animals.

The Wildlife Emergency Fund will support Ukrainian zoos immediately, and other global wildlife emergencies in the future.

Denver Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). WAZA and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) will ensure the assistance will reach the people, animals and organizations most in need. Funds raised will be distributed in accordance with a plan developed by WAZA and EAZA that will first provide immediate needs for animals and staff at Ukrainian zoos, and then will provide recovery assistance for zoos and other wildlife orga-

nizations when the time comes.

“We’ve all watched in horror as this crisis has unfolded in Ukraine, and our hearts go out to the Ukrainian people,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO of the Denver Zoo who also serves as a WAZA councilmember, in a news release. “Our zoo professional colleagues in Ukraine have inspired us with their courage and dedication as they work to care for the animals, and we must do what we can to support them as a member of the global zoo and wildlife conservation community.”

“So much of what we do is giving the animals in our care everything they need to thrive and create a stress-free environment, and I can’t begin to imagine how you do that in a warzone,” said Maura Davis, assistant curator of pachyderms at Denver Zoo. “I’ve seen the reports that many of the zookeepers in Ukraine are sleeping at their zoos to care for their animals, but I’m sure they’re wondering where they’re going to get their next load of hay, vegetables and other supplies.”

Annual Cinco de Mayo event returns to Civic Center Park

Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner. But no Cinco de Mayo celebration would be complete without the music and the dancers in their colorful costumes.

“It’s the cherry on top of the event,” said Jeanette Trujillo-Lucero, director of Fiesta Colorado Dance Company who is managing the community stage for Newsed’s annual Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture Festival.

Newsed Community Development Corporation is a community-based nonprofit with a mission “to promote and develop economic, community programs and projects that raise the income, educational and political levels of Denver residents,” states its website.

Newsed has been putting on the Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture Festival since 1988. It got its start on Santa Fe Drive in west Denver, and because of its popularity, it was moved to take place at Civic Center Park annually sometime in the 1990s.

Denver’s event has now grown to be one of the largest in the country.

After not being able to have the event for the past two years because of COVID, the annual event is back for 2022. The Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 7 and May 8 at Civic Center Park in Denver.

“We’re very excited to bring the event back,” said Andrea Barela, president and CEO of Newsed. “Both days will offer plenty to experience.”

This year’s highlights include three stages of entertainment that will feature musical and dance performances, Chihuahua races, taco eating contests, arts and crafts vendors, a low rider car show and a community parade.

The lineups for the three stages will be announced soon, but Barela leaked that the entertainment will truly be the best, with each stage featuring unique aspects of Mexican, Hispanic-American, Latinx and Chicano/a culture. The main stage will host regional groups such as mariachi, banda and Mexican rock.

The local stage will host local bands that perform a range of genres from hip hop to Latin jazz. The community stage will host traditional music and dance groups — this is where one can experience baile folklórico, or, folkloric dances.

dance, costuming and music that comes from that region,” TrujilloLucero said.

For example, the white dresses can be associated with Veracruz, and the colorful dresses — the most popular — come from Jalisco, which is thought to be where mariachi originated.

When Fiesta Colorado Dance Company performs, the dances are announced and its origins are explained “so the audience gets to learn about the culture,” Trujillo-Lucero said. “When you go to the fiestas (the Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture Festival), you’ll get to experience the whole spectrum of it all.”

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla — which is a south-central Mexican state — during the Franco-Mexican War. The significance of this one battle is that the Mexican army defeated the French, which was supported by heavy artillery, despite being vastly outnumbered and poorly supplied.

“Like St. Patrick’s Day, these events aren’t widely celebrated in their country of origin, but they are in the U.S.,” Barela said. “Here in Denver, Cinco de Mayo goes way, way back.”

According to popular belief, the U.S.’ Mexican Americans celebrated Cinco de Mayo as an act of resistance during the late 1800s. Circa the 1960s, Mexican-American youths celebrated Cinco de Mayo to demonstrate pride and ownership of joint heritages, and Chicano activists — identifying with the struggle of the Mexican army in Puebla — used the day to raise awareness to civil injustices.

Today and locally, Newsed’s Cinco de Mayo event offers a fun way to learn, experience and celebrate culture.

“This event is like experiencing Mexico in Denver,” Barela said. “If you don’t know much about Mexican culture, now is your opportunity to experience it.”
