Coffee with your paper: Tomari’s Coffee and Public House Morrison coffee shop offering a community environment Editor’s Note: This is the fifth in an ongoing series about coffee shops in the Evergreen/Conifer area. Tomari’s Coffee and Public House describes itself as the “epitome of a mom and pop shop,” and once you hear the origin of the name, you might agree. A mashup of the names of owners Tom Miszewski and Mari Ellis, the Morrison coffee shop is the loving creation of the couple who saw an opportunity for a community gathering place. “Every Monday and every Friday we drove past it,” Ellis said. She and her husband, Miszewski, always thought someone should buy the building and do something with it. Then they decided to be that someone.
AJ Henderson, left, and Zach Green pose for a picture behind the bar. PHOTO BY OLIVIA JEWELL LOVE
Tomari’s has been operating for five years, and offers espresso drinks, teas, sandwiches, breakfast items, pastries and cocktails. The shop has a liquor license so they
can spice up a hot chocolate with a shot of peppermint Schnapps, or create other fun drinks. The shop also does consignment sales for local artists and features cards, paintings, wood workings and more. One of the most unique parts of Tomari’s is their mug wall. Regular customers can buy a spot on the wall, which gives them a discount on coffee, and puts their name and special mug on the wall. Ellis said that creating a community space has been her goal with Tomari’s. She sees those results in her customers and staff. “The folks that work here are just part of a family,” she said. “We think of them as our children.” Tomari’s is always looking to grow that community. They are offering new community events, including a paint and sip class, a monthly book club, and yoga starting in April. Information about these events can be found at tomariscoffee.com/eventscalendar.
The shop also caters to bicyclists, as they have a repair station outside the shop and carry supplies for bike fixes. Tomari’s is pet friendly, with a patio, “pup bites” on its menu and free pup cups for furry friends. AJ Henderson, the manager of Tomari’s, found herself comfortable immediately at the shop. “I felt at home right away,” she said. “It’s really a community feel.” Henderson’s favorite drinks to make are the Mayan Mocha and a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. She likes to drink cold brew coffee with a splash of coconut milk. Tomari’s also roasts coffee on site, featuring Mad Loon Coffee Roasters in house. Zach Green, owner and roaster at Mad Loon, likes to roast in small batches and source fair trade beans. Green works to keep his process as environmentally friendly as possible, too.

What Does a Chamber of Commerce Do, Exactly? I often hear the statement that “I have no idea what a Chamber of Commerce actually is”. I don’t think many people have a full understanding of what their local chamber of commerce does within their community. Do you? Chambers have existed in the U.S. for more than two centuries, with many having been established before the jurisdictions they represent. Chamber of Commerce organizations are not one-size fits all, cookie-cutter structure; every chamber is unique, with different benefits, resources, and opportunities. However, all of our end goals are the same: to serve as an influential voice and power that stands for the wellbeing of the local business environment. This includes helping to promote local businesses and improve their growth. Our goal is to create opportunities for our members to succeed. We believe in offering businesses unique and effective ways to grow their business through creative marketing, networking, education and leadership development programs. We believe in understanding the needs of our business community and working to advocate on behalf of our businesses. And, we believe in working within the local community to promote our area and create a strong link between businesses, residents and visitors! As a resource for business owners, professionals, and our local community, our vision is to create a thriving business community through meaningful connections, igniting growth opportunities and

advocating for a healthy economic environment. We offer year-round networking events which include After Hour Mixers on the 3rd Thursday of each month, Monthly Membership Meetings on the second Friday of each month, Speed Networking, Ribbon Cuttings, Education Workshops and more throughout the year. We also host large community events like Elevation Celebration in July and Christmas in Conifer in December, to name a couple. All of these opportunities are accessible to our members and non-members. And we are constantly working to add new opportunities to bring together our businesses and the local community. In addition to the networking and educational opportunities we offer, the chamber works to inform, educate, and advocate on behalf of our businesses and community with local, county, and state leaders. The chamber also advocates with the community at-large on behalf of the local businesses. For example, ribbon cutting ceremonies call attention to new businesses and provide opportunities for community outreach. We highlight business successes in chamber communications by celebrating anniversaries, accolades, and new members. Business owners and leaders are able to advocate for themselves at our events by making meaningful connections with members of the community. Want to get involved? Visit goconifer.org to learn more about our vision and how you can be a part of it!
Take advantage of the many opportunities and business services the Chamber offers. If you have any membership questions, or would like to find out more about becoming a member, do not hesitate to contact the office at (303) 838-5711
