A snowy New Year’s Eve

Snow fell steadily during Skate the Lake on New Year’s Eve as attendees skated on the rink.

Skate the Lake a hit with locals, visitors alike BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Never say Evergreen isn’t filled with hardy souls. More than 1,000 people of all ages braved the area’s first significant snowstorm on New Year’s Eve to participate in the fun of Skate the Lake, in its 26th year. It can aptly be described as a Hallmark-like event. The snow provided a beautiful backdrop for skating and broomball on the ice and movies in a heated tent — plus food trucks, booths by the event’s sponsors Caldwell Insur-

ance and Kids to College Pediatric Dentistry, and fires to roast marshmallows and warm up. The fun culminated in a laser show that lit up the night courtesy of Lasersmith Light Show Systems based in Las Vegas. Pam Lindquist, who organized Skate the Lake for the Evergreen Park & Recreation District, noted that Evergreen residents love an event that includes snow, adding that more than 40 volunteers helped keep the event running smoothly. The Ranum family grabbed pizza and hot chocolate, and found the perfect spot to enjoy their meal on a snowy picnic table outside the Evergreen Lake House. The family moved to Evergreen about six

months ago, so this was their first time at Skate the Lake. Kim Ranum explained that the family had decided to take a walk to the lake in the snow and found Skate the Lake. While this was the Ranums’ first Skate the Lake, it was more like 10 for the Dyches and the Martins. Lori Dyche said the event was something fun to do on New Year’s Eve, with Krystin Martin adding that activities were available for all ages. The families stood in the snow near the marshmallow roasting stations. Skate the Lake wasn’t just for locals. Claire and Henry Berman, who live in Atlanta, were visiting family and decided to attend, saying they

had never skated on a frozen lake before, a little concerned that the ice might not be thick enough Ted Smith, owner of Lasersmith, personally oversaw the 7 p.m. light show, saying that when he came to check out the area last summer, he was impressed with Evergreen. “This is the first time in a long time we’ve have a show in the snow,” Smith said, adding that EPRD staff helped with some of the tedious chores of setting up the equipment. “Everybody here is so nice,” he said, noting that he has found a new vacation spot for his family. “The people here impress me.”
