David Ray reflects on time with board, serving school district

For the last three decades, David Ray has been a fixture of the Douglas County School District, serving as a principal, opening new schools, starting the outdoor education center and sitting on the school board for eight years.

With the election over, Ray finished out his time as a board member at the Nov. 14 meeting, which included a reception for outgoing board members Ray and Jason Page.

Dozens of community members and district staff, current and former, attended the reception to thank Ray for his years of dedication to the students and schools. Numerous public commenters at the board meeting also thanked him.

Superintendent Erin Kane said the district is incredibly grateful for Ray’s years of service, adding that he will always be part of the DCSD family.

“I have seen firsthand your passion, dedication and love for Douglas County School District,” Kane said.

“Serving as a volunteer for eight years and giving countless hours to our students, staff and families is incredible. It will feel strange not seeing you up on the dais.”

Board member Susan Meek, who has served on the board with Ray since 2019, choked up while recognizing his commitment to Douglas County schools.

Meek said Ray always centwered students in his decisions and he would leave an enduring legacy for that.

School district, sheriff settle with ACLU

Douglas County School District and the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office settled a lawsuit with the American Civil Liberties Union over the use of handcuffs on an 11-year-old autistic boy at Sagewood Middle School, agreeing to increase training for school resource officers.

In March 2021, the ACLU sued the school district and sheriff ’s office for “aggressively handcuffing” a student and leaving him in a patrol car while he banged his head and injured himself.

Under the settlement, the school district and sheriff ’s office have updated their agreement to require school resource officers to receive

training on interacting with people with disabilities, as well as have access to student behavioral plans and de-escalation techniques.

The settlement also includes training for school administration and mental health staff on the role of school resource officers, which does not include resolving discipline matters with students.

“Student conflict should never be handled like a criminal matter,” Deborah Richardson, ACLU of Colorado Executive Director, said in a statement. “With these revised policies, we can ensure that all students, especially those who need specific accommodations, feel safe at school.”

A statement from the school district said the safety and wellbeing of students is of “paramount

importance” to the district and sheriff ’s office.

“DCSO and DCSD value their continued partnership to protect the safety and well-being of all students attending school and look forward to continuing to implement these additional changes,” the statement said.

The statement added that it is rare for a student to be handcuffed or arrested at school.

However, the ACLU said there is a pattern of the district disproportionately putting students with disabilities and students of color into restraints and seclusion.

The lawsuit stemmed from an August 2019 incident at Sagewood Middle School where a student with autism was triggered by a class-

mate and “poked” his classmate with a pencil. A school psychologist removed the student from the classroom and then the school resource officers got involved.

The ACLU says the officers handcuffed and arrested the student on assault charges. While the student was in the patrol car, he became dysregulated and injured himself.

The officers did not take the student to receive medical care, but instead took him to a juvenile detention facility and held him on a $25,000 bond, according to the ACLU. The lawsuit alleged the actions of the school resource officers violated the student’s rights under the Fourth Amendment and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

he holiday season is a time filled with stories, whether they come in form of traditions long passed down or the fantastical kind we all gather round to hear for another year.

For this year, the Arvada Center’s holiday show is a bit of both — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.”

“Cinderella is a great holiday show because it’s magical and larger than life,” wrote Lily Schmoker, who plays Charlotte, one of the sisters, in the production, in an email interview.

“The beautiful set design, the transformations and the huge group numbers create a spectacular experience which is perfect for the holidays. It’s a feel-good story that families can enjoy together.”

“Cinderella” runs at the center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through Sunday, Dec. 31. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 p.m. on Wednesday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Directed by Kenny Moten, the show takes the familiar tale of a young girl forced to be a servant by her evil stepmother and infuses it with some modern updates, including knights riding on hoverboards and villagers

using cell phones.

audiences know and love are still around, just with a new twist.

A perfect example is the fairy godmother, played in the show by Aléna Watters. In Clarke Reader the classic version, the character appears magically in the story but in this version audiences get to meet her earlier as a beggar woman who eventually transforms into the fairy godmother.

“I’m approaching her with some silliness,” Watters explained.

“Because our costume design is not the traditional ballgown, the godmother has so much more silly playfulness to her that we get to transform into some elegance.

She’s a bit more eccentric, zany and playful.”

That sense of fun extends to all aspects of the story, with Schmoker bringing a humanly comedic touch to Charlotte, who she describes as SEE READER, P18

District looks at meaning of 5A passing, 5B failing

With mixed approval from Douglas County voters, the school district is investing $66 million in staff compensation and school security, while planning creative solutions for capital needs that did not receive funding.

The November election resulted in the passage of a $66 million mill levy override, while the $484 million bond failed. The failed bond would have funded construction of three new elementary schools, expansion of two middle schools and maintenance for all other district buildings.

The voter-approved $66 million mill levy override will go to raises for staff and improving school security.

At the Nov. 14 school board meeting, all of the board members, Superintendent Erin Kane and several district staff members expressed thanks to the voters for supporting the district.

“We have such gratitude toward our voters and taxpayers for being willing to invest in our kids and in the future of our school district,”

is already dedicated to an average 9.2% raise for teachers, an average 9% raise for classified staff and an average 7% raise for other district staff.

The increase will go into effect in January and staff will receive retroactive pay for the first half of the school year, Kane said.

“We will be dropping about $30 million into paychecks in January, which is just amazing,” Kane said.

“This ties up the $60 million per year going forward in order to maintain the salaries for our staff.”

The passage of the mill levy override puts Douglas County’s starting salary at $50,182, up from $45,209, which was the lowest in the metro area.

Kane is optimistic that the mill levy override will not only retain teachers, but attract them. She said the morning after the election, district principals received messages from former staff who were interested in returning to Douglas County.

Though the increased mill levy will help Douglas County be competitive, Kane noted it won’t completely close the gap with other districts.

The remaining $6 million from the mill levy override is reserved for spending on security, such as increasing school resource officers and adding a security specialist to every elementary school.

Security specialists are already employed at middle and high schools in the district.

Kane said the district’s law enforcement partners are also having trouble hiring new school resource officers so it may take time for that money to be spent.

“To be realistic, we probably won’t see a change in that staffing level on our side until next school year,” she

said.

When it comes to the impact of the failed bond measure, or 5B on the ballot, Kane said the district will not be able to build a new school for a few years and will have to prioritize emergency capital needs because there isn’t funding for other improvements.

On average, the district needs about $35 million annually for building maintenance.

“Our resources are all budgeted because we run very tight, but as there are underruns, we will set that aside to handle emergency capital needs that would shut a building down,” Kane said. “We won’t be able to pull enough money out of the couch cushions to build an elementary school.”

The last time Douglas County built a neighborhood school was in 2010.

Board member David Ray said the bond failing for the second year in a row is a major disappointment.

“We have to be honest that we now have children that will never experience a neighborhood elementary school and to me that’s tragic,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges with the bond is that each year it fails, the district’s funding needs continue to increase, Kane said.

The district has areas of overcrowding alongside areas with declining enrollment, contributing to a complex issue.

Kane said that ultimately the district will have to go back to voters for a bond to pay for new schools and building maintenance.

“Overcrowding is a real challenge for us because this problem is not getting smaller, it’s getting bigger,” she said. “We will have to go back to the voters at some point because we have to address all of these urgent needs.”

The school board plans to continue discussing next steps for capital needs at the Dec. 6 board retreat.

Education Corner: Thankful for our Douglas County voters This is the time of year to be thankful, and all of us in the Douglas County School District are so thankful for our Douglas County voters!

Our community recognized the value of our Douglas County School District (DCSD) teachers and staff by voting to pass 5A, a $66 million Mill Levy Override (MLO), and the impact a quality school district has on a community. This is a HUGE celebration for our school district, our staff, our students, and our communities!

We are so grateful for your support. Passing 5A helps us narrow the pay gap our teachers and staff have experienced for a number of years. We already have inquiries from teachers and staff that left us for other districts, because now they can now afford to come home.

While we have not fully addressed our salary challenges, this is a big step in the right direction!

Of course, the fact that 5B (our $484 million Bond) did not pass means we do have some challenges to overcome. However, we are committed to continuing to educate our community about the need for Bond funding. In the meantime, DCSD will use reserves and available resources for emergency capital needs and will do everything possible to provide our students and staff with comfortable and safe buildings to learn and work. We will partner with our community to find creative solutions to overcrowded schools in areas where neighborhoods are quickly growing (such as analyzing potential boundary changes, deploying mobiles, etc). We have

work to do and we are thankful for our engaged community and will be coming to you for feedback on solutions in the coming year.

The efforts around these ballot measures unified our county and I believe that we set an important example for our students regarding perseverance and setting aside differences to fight together for our students, staff, and schools. There is nothing we cannot accomplish when we work together. For that, I am thankful.

Lone Tree purchases vacant Treõ property

The city has officially purchased the vacant Treõ At Lone Tree property, located at the corner of Yosemite Street and Maximus Drive, for $3.85 million.

In a Nov. 21 email, Lone Tree Communications Director Nate Jones said the city’s purchase of the property “marks the first, important step in addressing this long vacant and blighted property.

“For more than a decade, the city has heard from Lone Tree residents and visitors about their desire to see something done with this space,” he continued. “We are thrilled to

announce that we are starting the process of requesting proposals from interested restaurant and entertainment operators on ways to redevelop the property.”

JLL, a commercial real estate and investment management company, said in a Nov. 18 news release that it closed the sale of the Treõ property.

According to the release, JLL represented the seller, MRJ Holdings, LLC — a commercial real estate investment company that purchased the property in 2007 and is managed

by Hemal R. Jhaveri.

and poring over every single detail and it was for the kids.”

In an interview with the Douglas County News-Press, Ray reflected on his time in the district and what he hopes his legacy will be.

Ray first came to Douglas County as a principal for Southridge Elementary in 1991. He would go on to open Coyote Creek Elementary, Mammoth Heights Elementary and Prairie Crossing Elementary, as well as the outdoor education center.

Ray said he first considered running for the board in 2015 because he was concerned with board members and the superintendent at the time creating a culture that he described as hostile to teachers and damaging to the district.

“I didn’t recognize the district,” he said.

“When I reflected about the principals leaving, the high teacher turnover rate, I thought, someone has to step in and do something for the kids because this is impacting them.”

When Ray won his board seat in 2015, he was part of a slate of candidates who opposed the board majority and pushed back on their agenda to reform the school district.

In his first term on the board, Ray said he focused on trying to reverse the damage to district culture, which he felt had been caused by silencing staff.

“My priority was that I wanted to restore what we had, with teachers having power and autonomy, but at the same time, having a sense that we were all in it together,” he said.

Halfway through his first term, voters ushered in a new board majority and Ray was no longer in the minority. He said those years would be some of the most productive in his time, streamlining district policies and rebuilding relationships with teachers and staff.

When the 2019 election rolled around, Ray said he decided to run to continue the work he had started and support his fellow board members.

“We were on such an incredible trajectory at that time,” Ray said.

Shortly into his second term, the district’s trajectory was disrupted by the covid pandemic. Ray said it was a terrifying time and he worried every day over the decisions he was tasked with.

Though Ray knows people disagree with him, he stands by his choice to listen to the guidance provided by healthcare professionals at the time.

“The responsibility was so daunting and there was so much polarization,” he said. “We had to protect our kids and we

had to protect our staff.”

The polarization in the district prompted another board flip in 2021 and put Ray back in the minority.

Working with the new board started off rocky, Ray said, with the majority reversing pandemic-related decisions, firing former superintendent Corey Wise, breaking Colorado Open Meetings Law and considering the elimination of the district’s equity policy.

However, Ray said he thinks the board members were able to find some compromise and build relationships because of shared goals, such as supporting school funding and providing multiple pathways for students to be successful. He points to the passage of

the mill levy override this November and the opening of the Legacy Campus as two examples of good work.

“I have to give them a lot of credit for being learners,” he said. “I think they had the realization that there are good things in the district that we need to preserve and protect.”

As Ray leaves the board, he said he is proud of having contributed to district infrastructure, reviving a better culture where teachers “are not fearful and they feel valued,” as well as passing school funding in 2018 and this year.

“Those moments are unseen, but, for me, they’re probably more valued than all of the things people do see,” he said.

When it comes to regrets, Ray said he will be reflecting on whether he could have done more to prevent tumultuous times and address student concerns, especially regarding inclusion, diversity and equity.

Ray encouraged the board to

keep all students at the center of their decision making going forward.

“I think this board needs to tackle students feeling like they don’t belong in the district,” he said.

After 33 years, Ray said the district feels like part of him, so he plans to continue to be involved, but in a different capacity, as a community member and grandparent.

“I don’t think people realize there really is magic in this district,” Ray said. “When you have the high performance of students regardless of the chaos, there really is something unique about our district that no other district has … and it’s the people in this place.”

Christian Brothers offers free car service to 80 residents

Each year, Christian Brothers Automotives’ across the nation dedicate one day to give back to local communities. This year, the Highlands Ranch location helped create a day of service, smiles and food for many community members.

As part of their brand and goal to change the way people perceive the automotive repair industry, Christian Brothers Automotive encourages its team members to be intentional about giving back to the community.

“One of the ways we’ve done that is by designating a day for Christian Brothers Automotive locations to participate in a National Day of Service [in October],” said Jared Beard, owner of Christian Brother Automotive Highlands Ranch.

Since opening in 2014, the Highlands Ranch location has

participated every year.

The day of service began with just a handful of shops doing 15

to 20 free oil changes for single mothers on a Saturday, which is a day the shop is typically closed.

For the Highlands Ranch team, it has grown into servicing over 80 cars free of charge for people in need within the community.

“In addition to doing 80 free oil changes, we also looked for safety items on the cars that, if left unaddressed, would put the vehicle owner and other drivers on the road in danger,” said Beard.

“These safety items are somewhat common because the people being helped are often faced with financial difficulties.”

Christian Brothers Automotive Highlands Ranch often services cars with little to no brakes, dangerously worn suspension components and bald tires.

This year, on National Service Day, the Highlands Ranch team performed over $25,000 worth of services for free, said Beard.

“The day went beyond cars being serviced inside the shop,” he said.

Christian Brothers Automotive Highlands Ranch partnered with Manna Connect, a local nonprofit organization that is affiliated with Cherry Hills Community Church.

Throughout the day, volunteers spoke with community members and offered burgers, hot dogs, beverages, face painting and a bounce house for children as well as gift cards to local businesses.

Many of the guests that received service were clients of Manna Connect and other local nonprofits that aim to serve families in need within the community.

Additionally, employees at the Highlands Ranch location also donated their time.

Among the many individuals who gave their time, Beard said Christian Brothers Automotives purchased car parts on behalf of the car owner’s and other local businesses provided services.

Colorado Petroleum donated oil, Factory Motor Parts provided oil filters and because Christian Brothers Automotives Highlands Ranch don’t sell tires, the team sends the recipients to Discount Tire and pays the bill.

“To our community, the yearly event continues to show our dedication to serving community members and being a true neighborhood partner,” said Beard.

After months of discussion, two of Douglas County’s elected leaders formally voted to create a volunteer board that will help decide the future of water supply in the county, over the third leader’s objection.

County officials intend for the water commission to create a county water plan, partly by integrating existing water provider plans into a “Comprehensive Douglas County Water Plan,” according to the county website.

The management of water in Douglas County has been “a hot topic” for county residents for many years, said Commissioner George Teal.

The water board provides “a place where we can bring together our residents, bring together those who know water here in the county and get us working together as a county with a county focus,” Teal said at the Nov. 14 meeting.

The resolution to create the water commission passed on a 2-1 vote at that meeting, with county leader Lora Thomas voting against it.

Thomas has argued forming a water commission is “totally unnecessary, a waste of time and effort and money.”

She’s also expressed concern that the county’s formation of a water commission is “another swing at” reviving a controversial proposal to pump water to Douglas County from southern Colorado.

The forming of the new commission comes against the backdrop of a proposal to pump about 22,000 acrefeet of water per year to Douglas County from the San Luis Valley, a region in the south part of the state.

An acre-foot is the equivalent of a one-foot-deep pool about the size of a football field. Renewable Water Resources, often called RWR, is the

private company that proposed the project.

Sean Tonner, one of the principals of RWR attracted media attention for throwing his hat in the ring to serve on the water commission. He’s now one of the commission’s 11 appointed members.

Teal has said he has been friends with Tonner for 20 years.

Last year, Laydon joined Thomas in deciding not to move forward with the Renewable Water Resources project, and Teal continues to support it.

“Everything’s on the table as far as I’m concerned,” Teal said this August.

“We get another five or six years of rainy summers, OK, maybe then we can start to be picky and choosy.”

Laydon has said “it’s been much ado about nothing” that Tonner had brought a proposal to the county.

“I didn’t support it during the (American Rescue Plan Act) discussion, but that doesn’t mean there’s not room for people with big ideas that (can) bring people together,” Laydon said during a Nov. 6 meeting.

Laydon appeared to be referencing the county leaders’ decision in 2022 not to use federal ARPA dollars on the RWR project.

At the time, Laydon said his decision was because the county’s outside legal counsel concluded that the project was not eligible for federal COVID relief funds and recommended the county not participate.

In the Nov. 6 meeting, Laydon said that anyone on the water commission “has to check conflicts at the door.”

had made it onto Teal’s list as someone whom he supports to be an “alternate” member of the water commission, who could serve if a main member is unavailable.

County officials had not yet appointed the alternate members of the water commission, and it was unclear whether Kim would still be in the running to become an alternate.

The water commission’s first meeting could occur in December, and the main members of the water commission may play a role in determining whom the county appoints as alternate members, according to county staff.

Laydon and Teal supported appointing Tonner, who appeared for a public interview Oct. 13 via videoconferencing.

“RWR has no project in front of the county at this time, and the commission doesn’t exist (yet), so obviously we don’t have anything in front of the commission,” Tonner said at the time.

He also said he would recuse himself — or remove himself from participation — if any plans were to be pushed regarding RWR. Laydon has argued it’s important for officials to have a county-level water plan.

“Not having a plan is planning to fail,” Laydon said at the Nov. 14 meeting.

Money in Parker Water

Real-estate developers interested in exporting water from the San Luis Valley to Douglas County have contributed thousands of dollars to candidates for the Parker Water and Sanitation District Board, one of the largest water providers in the county, according to reporting from Fresh Water News.

Recently, Robert Kennah won a seat on the Parker water board and had received two donations from partners in RWR, a realestate development group whose principals include former Colorado Gov. Bill Owens. The contributions were made by RWR principals John Kim and Hugh Bernardi, according to filings at the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, Fresh Water News reported.

A second RWR-backed candidate, Kory Nelson, also received $10,000 in donations from RWR, but did not win a seat on the Parker water board.

If Nelson had won, RWR would have ties to three members of the five-member board, according to Ron Redd, the district manager of Parker Water, Fresh Water News reported.

Parker board member Brooke Booth is related by marriage to RWR principal Tonner, Redd said, according to the reporting.

Dozens applied to commission

Douglas County staff had previously told Colorado Community Media that more than 50 people applied to serve on the water commission. Staff clarified in mid-November that the total number of applicants for the water commission is 50. (The county had mistakenly counted a few applications submitted for Douglas County Open Space Advisory Committee seats as part of that earlier total, according to staff.)

VOICES A time to give

W

hile trying to kill time in between hockey games with my children last weekend, we went into a few stores FROM THE in Colorado EDITOR Springs.

It did not take long for them to start telling me what they wanted me to buy for them.

Frustrated, I had to Thelma Grimes make a rule that we were only there to buy gifts for others and not ourselves. I am not going to lie — there was some clear disappointment on their faces.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite Christmas traditions was my dad taking my brothers and me out to the stores to buy gifts for each other and, especially, for my mom. She stayed home and we shopped.

It was always a one-time thing.

I can’t say we always got my mom stuff she wanted or needed. As a mom myself, I now get it. My son bought me a wedding and engagement ring last year from a clearance rack. He made it clear it was big, so he knew I’d love it. It still makes me smile.

Now that I have children in a world where it seems they always want and forget to give — teaching this lesson can be tough. I want them to understand the importance of giving to others. I want them to understand it’s not always about them.

I can tell you it’s an uphill battle with my 10-year-old who was upset that I would not go upstairs in the sports store to look at the $250 hockey stick that he swears will make him play better.

All of this led to one of my children asking me who I give

to. I told them I give in many ways, including through my work at Colorado Community Media, where we are collecting food and toys this year to distribute throughout the organizations in our community doing good, important work.

We are also one of those organizations that will be asking for help this year. You see, it’s not cheap to provide news to our communities.

Print costs are always high and paying our staff a living wage seems harder and harder every year.

Embracing what’s next in life

G

o as far as you can see; when you get there, you’ll be able to see farther.” - J.P. Morgan We have all probably lived in that moment of asking WINNING ourselves what’s next in life. Whether we WORDS are riding the wave of success and are looking toward a future goal, or just wondering if there is something bigger in store for us, we need to look beyond where we are today to see even further.

In speaking with a Michael Norton young and successful salesperson who had already reached 200% of his quota, I asked him about his expectations for the last two months of the year, and what next year would look like. He shared two things with me. He was certain he would bring in at least one or two more deals this year, and that no matter what the quota assigned to him, he will look further and hold himself accountable to reaching an even higher quota.

When life feels mundane, challenges loom large, or dreams seem out of reach, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut of discouragement. We lose sight of the bigger picture. But there is always something greater in store for each of us, if we open our eyes to see it.

The universe has grand plans that our limited human perspective cannot yet imagine. There are possibilities, adventures, and joys waiting around the corner that will dwarf current struggles.

The next chapter contains wonder that we cannot possibly fathom.

Breakthroughs often follow breakdowns. In times of deep uncertainty, when we are tested most severely, we gain strength, wisdom and resilience that equip us for the journey ahead. Hardships transform us. And progress is rarely linear. Sometimes we must move sideways or circle back before we can move forward. But each step leads somewhere. There are gifts hidden in every challenge.

On the open road of life, there will be detours and breakdowns. Plans sometimes unravel in spectacular fashion. But with resilience and optimism, we leverage obstacles to propel ourselves forward. In the rearview mirror, setbacks become signposts guiding us toward our purpose. At every age and stage, embracing the unknown with an open road mindset liberates us to evolve. We uncover capacities we didn’t know we possessed.

Each new horizon expands our perspective.

There is always adventure awaiting around the next bend. The journey holds more than you can imagine.

Lean into the mystery. Accelerate into what’s next. The open road of life promises surprise, joy, and the thrill of chasing dreams yet dreamt.

Sturgeon, an electrician who would go on to start the Sturgeon Electric Company, devised a plan to dip light bulbs in red and green

“People went past the house and saw it and liked the look of it,” Jason Hansen, History Colorado’s director of interpretation and research said.

In 1945, NBC did a broadcast tribute to Denver and the Sturgeon family for having originated the tradition, according to Stromberg.

Now, Sturgeon Electric — still in business after all these years — celebrates its Christmastime roots by partnering with Colorado Children’s Hospital to hang lights on the homes of kids who are ailing during the holidays.

“This will be the sixth year in a row that Sturgeon Electric gives back to our community by putting lights on the homes of a child who is currently at Children’s Hospital,” Stromberg said. “We’re glad to be able to give back to our community and carry that tradition forward.”

This year, for History Colorado’s Zoom In exhibit — which examines the Centennial State’s history in 100 artifacts —

Hansen’s research team looked into the claim that Sturgeon invented outdoor Christmas lights to see if they could verify what many Denverites know as a piece of local mythology.

“It’s one of those stories where it may just be urban legend,” Hansen said. “And so, we went in and looked into it. I had a team of researchers that were working on that exhibition, and we dug into it trying to disprove it. And we couldn’t. It’s one of those enduring traditions, which is why we wanted to include it in the 100 objects exhibition.”

Thus, there is a strand of Christmas lights on display at the Zoom In exhibit at History Colorado’s Denver museum.

The organization also puts on an annual Christmas light tour that takes merrymakers on a bus ride throughout the city to discuss the tradition’s history and look at lighting displays today.

“I think she is the total contrast of Ella, but I really fell in love with her,” Schmoker wrote. “I’m trying to play her with as much honesty as I can while keeping all her comedic moments, since she’s written, I think, to be a main source of comedic relief throughout the show.”

While the show certainly has some changes, the crucial core story is still there and that’s the reason it has resonated with audiences for so long. Which, as it turns out, makes it the perfect fit for the holiday season.

“I hope audiences have a beautiful holiday joy infusion,” Watters said.

“They will be entertained and get to laugh and those are important experiences to have as a family.

Shared Visions exhibit celebrates tactile art

Instead of simply looking – as they are normally limited to doing – visitors in a gallery last week rubbed, poked, ripped, squeezed and held the art.

They were at the Shared Visions exhibition, a tactile art show put on through a collaboration between students from Arapahoe Community College and the Colorado Center for the Blind.

The exhibit, which will be on display through Dec. 5, features paintings, installations, ceramics and mixed media artwork, all of which visitors are encouraged to touch.

“It’s making artwork accessible to a bigger group of people,” said Nathan Abels, a painting professor at Arapahoe Community College.

“It’s expanding concepts of art – why couldn’t art be touched, right?”

Incorporating senses beyond sight The first iteration of the Shared Visions exhibit went on display in 2014, when Abels and his colleague at the Colorado Center for the Blind, Ann Cunningham, decided to collaborate.

The Colorado Center for the Blind is a training center that offers programs to teach blind individuals skills and self-confidence to work toward independence, opportunity and success.

Several students, instructors and alumni from the center created art for the exhibit, as did students from

Since the first show, Abels said it has been incredible to see how his students over the years have gotten creative in thinking about art from a standpoint that’s not solely based on sight.

“Students have started to

incorporate, I think, more variations on sensory experience,” he said.

“Students have been trying to incorporate even more senses – thinking about smell, thinking about sound, about movement.”

One piece of artwork features small pillows with poetry printed on one side. On the other side, the

poems are embroidered in braille – and when squeezed, the pillows play a recording of the poem in the artist’s voice.

The gift of the gallery Chris Parsons, a staff member in the center’s senior program, brought a group of seniors to visit the exhibit a few days after its opening. She said it is a fantastic opportunity for blind people to experience art in a gallery.

“As a blind person, if you can even get up close enough to something because there’s not ropes, you still can’t touch it” in a museum, she said. “There’s glass, or the person who’s with you tells you it says, ‘Don’t touch.’”

Several of the seniors lost their vision later in life, so Parsons said visiting museums is something many of them miss.

“For them, it really is a way for them to be able to get back to something that they may have really enjoyed doing,” she said of the exhibit. “And they thought it was something that there was really no hope for them of being able to really experience that anymore.”

Broomfield resident Susie Zimmer, who is blind, traveled to Littleton to see the exhibit with her friend, Judy Murphy. She said she

was very happy they made the trip.

“I like the different textiles,” she said, adding that her favorite piece of art was a butterfly made from different textured fabrics.

Murphy said she enjoyed the messages that came through the artwork, and that through touching the art, people can glean deep meanings.

In order to make the artwork as accessible as possible, each piece has a small label explaining the artist’s inspiration, both in written English and in braille.

In addition to the creativity it inspires in his students, Abels said another goal of the show is to help students at Arapahoe Community College and the Colorado Center for the Blind connect with each other.

“It’s connecting with our community,” he said. “(The center) is pretty much right across the street.

So we’re getting to know them and connect with our neighbors.”

The exhibit is located in the Colorado Gallery of the Arts on Arapahoe Community College’s Littleton Campus.

It is free and open to the public Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The gallery will be closed Nov. 20 through Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving break.

Sky Ridge holds personal significance for Jhaveri, as it is the hospital where his mother passed away in 2009 and where both of his grandsons were born, per the release.

Sam Zaitz, executive vice president of JLL, said in the release that the Treõ property was “under numerous contracts over the years but couldn’t close as the parties could not come to a resolution with the city on approved use and incentives.”

According to a city staff report, Treõ operated as a nightclub until it closed more than 13 years ago, and the property has been vacant since 2009.

“Typically, a vacant property in Lone Tree will sell or lease to a new end user over a short period of time,” the report said. “The Treõ property, however, has had multiple potential buyers and contracts that ultimately back out due to site conditions and price.”

According to the report, the city’s purchase gives it the ability to control the redevelopment process as well as “clean up the site, eliminate blight, demolish the building, and make it … ready for a future user.”

The intention is for the city to ultimately sell or lease the property to a restaurant or entertainmentfocused business, according to the report.

During a Lone Tree City Council

study session on Nov. 21, Mayor Jackie Millet said she wants the demolition to be done sooner rather than later.

According to the city’s website, a timeline for the redevelopment of the property is being created by city staff and will be shared with the community.

The Treõ property exists within the city’s “Entertainment District,” a roughly 67-acre area near South Yosemite Street and C-470 that the city is trying to revitalize.

Millet said at a recent town hall that the city is in the process of standing up an urban renewal authority for the Entertainment District.

An urban renewal authority can manage urban renewal plans, aiming to eliminate and prevent the spread of deteriorating conditions in the area and facilitate redevelopment.

On Dec. 5, the city council will conduct a public hearing to consider the approval of the urban renewal plan for Lone Tree Entertainment District Urban Renewal Area. Those interested in learning more about the upcoming hearing and seeing a copy of the plan can visit bit.ly/ ura1205.

City spokesperson Nate Jones said via email that the city can ensure the eventual selected site user for the Treõ property will “bring something exciting to the community that aligns with the city’s vision for a revitalized Entertainment District.”
