Wildfire is ‘year-round threat’ in Douglas County First responders discuss plans, how residents can prepare

When South Metro Fire Rescue crews helping respond to the Marshall Fire arrived at their staging area, the site was surrounded by several buildings engulfed in flames.

Smoke laid flat, “a very telling sign of a wind-driven event” and “a big red flag for us,” South Metro spokesman Eric Hurst said. In those conditions, the likelihood that first responders are able to quickly control a fire plummets.

Firefighters can expect low visibility. Debris falling. Structures collapsing.

As South Metro personnel got to work, they first tried stopping the fire from spreading through grassy areas, but 20- to 25-foot flames leapt low across the ground, “enough to get across a road.”

The state public health department has updated its quarantine and isolation guidance, changing how long it suggests people with COVID-19 — or those who are exposed to it — should avoid others.

Colorado made the move to align with the change in recommendations from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to a Dec. 27 news release.

“Isolation” refers to the steps a person should take after a confirmed infection, according to the CDC’s website. Quarantine, on the other hand, is when people avoid others after exposure to the virus and wait to see whether sickness occurs.

The updated guidance reduces the recommended time in isolation for those in the general population with COVID-19 from 10 to five days if asymptomatic on day five, followed by an additional five days wearing a mask when around others, according to the state public health department.

Earlier in the pandemic, the CDC recommended a quarantine period of 14 days. In December 2020, the CDC adjusted, saying people can stop

GOP contenders defend gas industry Five candidates running for governor meet in Fort Lupton

Colorado’s oil and gas industry was well represented Jan. 6 as five Republicans seeking their party’s nomination for Colorado governor met in Fort Lupton. “(Gov. Jared) Polis killed the oil and gas industry. It’s one of the biggest industries in the state of Colorado,” candidate Greg Lopez said at the forum hosted by the Republican Women of Weld County. “Not only does it create over 80,000 jobs, both upstream and downstream, it pays well for families. You should remember that in his first legislative session after we voted to tell him to leave oil and gas alone, he decided to go ahead and pass legislation to put in setbacks.”

Nine Republican Colorado gubernatorial candidates were invited to the candidate forum at the Fort Lupton Recreation Center, but only five candidates attended. They were Greg Lopez, the former mayor of Parker; Morrison’s Jason Lopez; Elbert County Realtor Danielle Neuschwanger; Jeffrey Fry of Hayden and Frisco’s Jon GrayGinsberg.

Veteran political strategist and former Colorado state Republican chair Dick Wadhams moderated the forum, asking questions focusing on oil and gas, protecting rural areas, crime, transportation, the pandemic, and the 2020 election.

The primary will occur June 28.

The general election is Nov. 8.

Greg Lopez, who lives in Elizabeth currently, said Polis does not care about Weld County or Colorado families.

“His goal is to make sure that when and solar replace fossil fuels, he doesn’t care about Weld County, he doesn’t care about the families that work hard,” he said. “We are going to make him a one-term governor so he doesn’t make Coloradans suffer.”

“I come from an oil and gas background and protect the oil and gas sites all over the world being in the military. Seeing the prosperity does bring in economic value,” he said.

He argued against over-regulation.

“One of the things that I do not agree with is over-regulation of industries,” he said. “We need to put new policies in place that can thrive industries, air quality control, ERP systems, quality management, along with the environment that needs to be protected. We have the technology to do it. We just need to implement it in the right situations — right places and in the right times — Gov. Polis is not doing that.”

Neuschwanger said it should not come as a surprise to oil and gas workers and their families.

“Gov. Polis told you exactly what he’s going to do when he ran for office back in 2017 when he said that in the next 40 years Colorado would be a 100 percent green efficient state,” Neuschwanger said. “Just

recently in Senate Bill 260, the transportation initiative, he said that there’d be a push for 940,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2030. “ She promised to focus on preserving that rural industry.

“For Weld County, I will stand up for every single rancher and farmer across our state, I will make sure to reduce stagflation,” she said. “We bring back our oil and gas industry in Colorado and focus on natural resources such as the advanced nuclear power plants and Platteville.” Fort St. Vrain, the former nuclear plant that generates electricity by burning coal, is a quarter-mile northeast of the Weld County town.

said. “So from a gas stove to electric, you have to run the right line which is 220. Then you’ve got to upgrade your gas furnace to electric.

How many people do you think in the low-income bracket can do that with fixed incomes?”

Pandemic response The Republican candidates also had criticism for Polis’ handling of the COVID-19 response. Fry said it actually allowed the most vulnerable to die.

“The elderly are more susceptible to death than younger kids,” Fry said. “The elderly are the ones we take care of first and, second, take care of the children and the mothers. The damage has been done to our society. It’s enormous right now.”

He said he would do things differently, but was not specific.

“We heard enough of masks, social distancing, face shields, and double masks,” Fry said. “We are going to do the right thing and take care of it.”

Frisco’s Gray-Ginsberg said he favors masks, but had a darker theory about the disease, which he tied into the New Year’s Eve fires in Lousiville.

“It is by a bio war against us Americans, especially us as a demographic and it’s in the newspaper,” he said. “The Christian sect is being accused of starting the fires.

I’m Christian, but I’m not part of the sect. I think it’s a bio war and we’re the targets. If I was governor, there would be a massive mask mandate.”

Elizabeth’s Greg Lopez called the state’s COVID response incompetent.

“The governor has misguided policies has hurt Colorado beyond comparison,” he said. “I don’t think Gov. Polis is a bad person.

But he has shown us his incompetence. He has no idea what emotional intelligence is all about, with the mental health damage that he’s done to our kids.”

He noted that Colorado’s pandemic shutdown forced people to be alone when they died.

“I want to remind people that people died alone, because of his policies,” Greg Lopez said. “People couldn’t go to funerals, because of what he did. We had kids that couldn’t even graduate across the stage because of his misguided policies. We don’t even know what he is going to do to the rest of our state, our economy, and our kids.

How dare he do this to us? It is time to make sure Gov. Polis realizes that he’s going be held accountable for his mistakes.”

Morrison’s Jason Lopez said the reaction was overblown.

“We should not live in fear due to this pandemic. Our bodies are an amazing operating system biologically,” he said.

Neuschwanger said leaders should have begun preparing for COVID-19 even before 2019 was over.

“I used to run a lot of mass casualty incidents, and here’s how I would run COVID differently,” she said. “Back in December of 2019 when we first knew that the China

virus escaped the Wuhan lab, I would have started looking at PPE right then. And also talked to my local hospitals about the possibility of it hitting the United States.”

Transportation Moderator Wadhams asked what priorities they had for improving the state’s transportation infrastructure. Gray-Ginsberg, the Frisco software developer, said he is for trains.

“I would implement a train system immediately probably zooming through South Park,” he said. “And a train system and all through Colorado like a Metroplex train, and bring in Siemens technologies, who I’ve worked for before.”

Elizabeth’s Greg Lopez said he sat on the board of directors of E-470 and understands transportation. His focus would be alternate routes.

“What we must do is think about how are we going to create alternative routes, he said. “I sat on the board for E-470. Think about this for a minute; What if the state of Colorado bought E-470 and took off all the tolls because it is owned by five jurisdictions in three counties?”

Doing that could alleviate pressure on Interstate 25, he said.

“It’s not privately owned. It is owned by municipalities,” he said.

“We could take all kinds of traffic off the I-25 by making E-470 a public road. These are the types of ideas that you need from a governor to think outside the box because it’s important.”

Morrison’s Jason Lopez called for distributing the state’s transportation budget more fairly around the state.

“I feel that our budgeting, and doing a restructuring of how things are allocated, could be managed where the infrastructure is built for a futuristic-looking viewpoint,” he said. “People have moved here from all over the country, from California. When we legalized cannabis our population grew quite a bit.

“But now we do not tackle these infrastructure needs with roads and bridges. I understand about bikes and certain other types of transportation within Denver metropolitan areas, but we need to be able to connect to our rural communities as well so people have infrastructure even further out, to come in or travel out.”

Neuschwanger noted that the state has already increased spending on transportation. It just needs to be spent wisely.

“Where does this money go?

Because it’s not going to infrastructure. It’s not going to transportation,” Neuschwanger said. “Senate Bill 260 was just proposed in May and passed, which is a $5.85 billion spending bill to increase transportation by making 940,000 electric cars available by 2030 (with) charging stations across the United States.”

Fry said he would aim to eliminate government commissions, especially the state’s transportation commission.

“I know this mess at the state level. It’s the biggest slush fund waste of money you can imagine in transportation. This is a simple way to save money when you get a job with the state.”

“Behavior like that is way too dangerous, No. 1, to put firefighters in front of, and No. 2, even if we went to try, the probability of success is pretty much zero,” Hurst said.

As hundreds of homes burned, South Metro crews shifted focus to saving properties. “For hours and hours” the firefighters made impossible decisions about which houses they could save and which they could not, Hurst said.

Crews made successful stands, like in one cul-de-sac, where they prevented a house ablaze from igniting the homes neighboring it.

In other cases, firefighters salvaged what they could in a race against time. They drug belongings from one home’s garage, piling the items in the street before fire could consume the property.

“Generally, when we do that we are looking for photos on the wall,” Hurst said. “Anything that looks like it is a keepsake.”

Could this happen in Douglas County?

Within hours, the Marshall Fire became Colorado’s most destructive in history, destroying more than 1,000 structures, leveling entire neighborhoods and forcing thousands to flee, many after the fire was already upon them. At least one man died and another person remained missing as of press time.

Hurst said the chief reaction he heard among South Metro personnel was “a general sense of astonishment” at the fire’s speed — winds blew more than 100 mph — and the sheer loss of property.

One more element to the Marshall Fire quickly gained attention — that the disaster swept through urban and suburban communities, similar to others in the Denver metro area.

“Douglas County and the entire Front Range is susceptible to wildfire,” said Tim Johnson, director of the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management. “It’s our number one threat.”

The risk is also “a year-round threat in Douglas County,” said Mike Alexander, the emergency

services manager with the county OEM. Throughout the year, the county OEM keeps an eye on fire conditions and makes decisions about calling on various aviation support the county has on contract, he said.

And in a day and age where “almost every year it feels like we have some record-breaking event and many very close to home,” Hurst said, there will come a time when an incident “is going to be so great in its size and scope and scale that it will tax the available resources (locally), just like the Marshall Fire did.”

“It’s an unsettling thought,” said Hurst, a Castle Rock resident. “It’s a thought that I have to live with, that one day this fire could happen here.”

County preparation In an interview with Colorado Community Media, Douglas County Commissioner Abe Laydon outlined a six-point plan for addressing wildfires.

“In Douglas County, your board of county commissioners take wildfires very seriously,” Laydon said. “This last year we attempted to amplify our efforts through the wildfire initiative.”

The plan’s steps include: partnerships with stakeholders such as fire officials; public outreach; yearly forest maintenance; assessing traffic; planning for future forest management projects and legislation; and funding opportunities through the state and federal governments.

Lone Tree Chief of Police Kirk Wilson said his community has planned for a Marshall Fire or worst-case scenario “the best we can.”

“The problem with (the Marshall Fire) and the reason that’s difficult to plan for is you literally had, one, no notice at all. It happened so rapidly. The wind conditions were horrific that day, the dryness of the state was horrific that day,” he said.

County agencies compare disaster response plans “and make sure we are mirroring each other,” Wilson said, and police and fire departments are ready to aid neighboring communities if necessary.

resources as we could possibly handle,” Wilson said.

As local first responders pointed out, Douglas County is no stranger to large wildland incidents or fires that threatened suburban areas.

The Chatridge 2 Fire of 2020 was roughly half the size of the Marshall Fire but summoned a full-throttle response as it sped through the BackCountry, encroaching on Highlands Ranch and damaging some backyards.

“We had probably more aerial helicopters and airplanes, slurry bombers, on that fire than anyone had ever seen close to the Denver metro area before,” Hurst said.

Air support can’t help in wind conditions like those seen during the Marshall Fire, he said. But for those situations where it can help, Douglas County has contracts with both air tankers and helicopter companies.

The county has two types of contracts with these companies, one that provides an option for emergency response any time of year — if the vendor has resources available, the county pays afterwards — and one called exclusive use, which guarantees support for a portion of the year. For the past four years, the county has funded exclusive-use helicopter support for at least 90 days per year, Alexander said.

County agencies began planning for worst-case scenarios dating back to the 2003 Cherokee Ranch Fire, Hurst said, which grew to 1,000 acres and triggered evacuations in Castle Pines North.

“For Douglas County as a whole, that was a really, really big wakeup call and it came on the heels of the Hayman Fire,” Hurst said, referencing the 2002 wildfire that was Colorado’s largest in history until the Pine Gulch and Cameron Peak fires of the 2020 season.

How to prepare Douglas County leaders have a resounding answer for how residents can begin preparing for such an event close to home: Sign up for CodeRED emergency notifications.

Using phone numbers, email and text messages, the “reverse 911” system alerts those signed up about any emergencies in their area. It also provides instructions on what to do next. Those interested in signing up can do so at Douglas.co.us/CodeRED. Hurst stressed CodeRED is an opt-in system, and people must sign up for alerts.

Cocha Heyden with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said it’s a good idea to sign up every member of the household, including teenagers with cell phones.

Another way the OEM helps prepare communities is by conducting evacuation drills where folks can practice leaving their homes, getting into their car and driving an evacuation route. Those events are often planned through homeowner associations and other community groups and are usually

announced in local newsletters, Johnson said.

Johnson also encourages folks in their own time to become familiar with their local streets and communities.

“Please be familiar with and know your subdivisions, know the ways in and out,” he said.

“When smoke is in the air it’s not the time to think ‘Where am I and where am I going?’”

Hurst agreed that knowing multiple exits from a community is paramount. The typical route residents take could be inaccessible because of the incident, he said.

“Maybe visibility has dropped to almost nighttime because of how thick the smoke is. Maybe there are things on fire around you. We are talking an absolutely terrifying situation,” he said. “The best thing to do, as uncomfortable as it is, is to consider what that looks like and to have a plan.”

Douglas County first responders also had a word of caution for parents: Don’t forget to make plans for what to do if children are home alone when an incident unfolds.

“A lot of times parents are at work,” Hurst said, adding that roads in and out of neighborhoods might be closed off by law enforcement. People can always call 911 to aid children, but families should plan for who else, such as a neighbor, would be available to help children evacuate if needed.

A press release from the county encouraged residents to also make a “family evacuation plan” including a family reunification point outside of the neighborhood.

The county also asks residents to consider how they could fireproof their own properties. The goal is to minimize the likelihood the home will ignite during a wildfire and to reduce or eliminate nearby fuel, according to the Colorado State Forest Service.

Hurst gave examples: Are there dried pine needles in the gutters?

“Think about hot embers raining down on your house,” he said.

Hurst said urging people to be prepared is not meant to incite fear, but rather to bring perspective to potential incidents. Proper planning, he said, helps alleviate panic if a disaster does occur.

“We just want people to have that education and understand that it’s possible,” he said. “And disasters aren’t designed in a way that we put them on the calendar and say, ‘Today’s the day.’”

Federal relief funds helped most Colo. hospitals profit in 2020 A report finds that hospitals in the Denver area netted $1 billion less on patient care

Thanks in part to federal relief funds, most Colorado hospitals were profitable in 2020 A new report found that hospitals in the Denver area netted $1 billion less on patient care in 2020 due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

A new report from a national expert on hospital finances shows that Colorado hospitals weathered the early months of the coronavirus pandemic profitably, despite seeing a steep decline in revenue related to patient care.

Hospitals in the Denver metro area posted combined profits of nearly $1.4 billion in 2020, according to the report from Allan Baumgarten, a Minnesota-based health care consultant who has been producing reports on the Colorado hospital market for more than 20 years. His reports are drawn from data the hospitals submit to the federal government

and are considered among the most reliable for tracking hospital finances in the state.

Baumgarten also found that health insurance companies in Colorado recorded record profits in 2020. Health maintenance organizations, or HMOs, in the state logged profits of about $662 million in 2020, a roughly 6% margin. Baumgarten found that the unexpected expenses that insurers incurred related to caring for coronavirus patients were more than offset by the amount insurers had to pay for other types of care – such as nonemergency surgeries – that were delayed during the pandemic.

“Even in times of great distress, hospital systems and health insurers are doing quite well for themselves,” Baumgarten said.

The profits for Denver-area hospitals – roughly an 11% margin relative to net patient revenue – represent a considerable decline from 2018, when they posted a record $2.1 billion in profits. But Baumgarten found that the decline could have been much steeper.

Hospitals in the Denver metro area took in nearly $440 million less in revenue related to patient care in 2020 than in 2019 – likely the result of the pandemic shutting down lucrative elective procedures at hospitals during its earliest months,

as well as people postponing care out of fear of being exposed to the coronavirus. Hospitals also saw roughly $627 million more in expenses during 2020.

The result – a more than $1 billion double-whammy – pushed operating income from patient care

down to about $246 million, combined, for Denver metro hospitals, far below the $1.3 billion hospitals made off of patient care in 2019, according to Baumgarten’s report.

Officials urge signing up for alerts for wildfires

Some residents during the Marshall Fire say they received little notice — or no notice at all — to flee their homes in the face of an inferno fueled by 100 mile per hour wind gusts, The Colorado Sun reported.

In an emergency, multiple different alert systems could come into play, and that often isn’t common knowledge, said Eric Hurst, a spokesperson for South Metro Fire Rescue. The South Metro Fire District coverage area includse 12 municipalities, including Aurora, Bow Mar, Castle Pines, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Columbine Valley, Foxfield, Greenwood Village, Lakewood, Littleton, Lone Tree and Parker.

There is an alert system that the public doesn’t have to sign up for: the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System, which is operated under FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

That system can send messages to an area based on location, including through mobile phones.

But “it is not perfect, and some will not get the alert, and some will get it that are not in the alert area,” said Deputy John Bartmann, a spokesperson for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. “This was the issue we had when we sent the boil-water alert to a section of the City of Englewood earlier (last) year.”

It can be difficult to craft alerts in a way that doesn’t cause confusion when working with notifications such as the IPAWS messages, Hurst said. If people receive the message in a larger area than intended,

roads could become jammed.

“If we give the wrong direction, the worst thing is: Not only are you in a traffic jam that’s gridlocked, but now you’re in a traffic jam that’s surrounded by fire.

Now more lives are at risk,” Hurst added.

Local officials want residents to sign up to receive notifications. In Arapahoe County, the “ArapAlert” program uses a system called CodeRed to allow public safety agencies to warn the public of emergencies.

If you do not have a traditional landline phone — or if you do but still would like to receive a text, email, or cellphone call in addition to the call on your landline or Comcast phone — residents should register for the free ArapAlert service. Visit ace911.colorado.gov/ arapalert to opt in.

The public should note that the City of Aurora is not part of that system. Those living and working

Hurst suggests double checking that citizens are signed up, particularly for those who have recent relocated to a new home.

Other ways to stay informed of emergencies include finding the local fire agency on the PulsePoint smartphone application.

“So (at) pretty much the same time firefighters are being notified about a fire,” you can hear about it via a push notification on your phone, Hurst said. It also allows residents to click a button and listen to the radio traffic that firefighters are hearing as it occurs, Hurst said.

Another step is to follow a local fire agency on Twitter. Personnel are often updating about emergencies on that platform, Hurst noted.

Adventist Hospital, Lutheran Medical Center, and the UCHealth hospitals in Highlands Ranch and Broomfield – failed to turn a profit in 2020.

All of Colorado’s major hospital systems in the Denver metro area were profitable in 2020, with privately owned HealthONE on top with profits of about $626 million before taxes, according to Baumgarten’s report. When adding in profits from hospitals outside the metro area, UCHealth pulled ahead, with about $630 million.

Baumgarten said the trends are similar nationwide.

“Large hospital systems around the country, from what I’ve seen, continue to do very well,” he said.

For smaller hospitals outside the metro area, 2020 was a more challenging year. Of the 29 largest nonDenver-metro hospitals in Colorado, seven of them lost money in 2020.

Combined, the hospitals reported about $620 million in profits in 2020, around a 9% margin when calculated as a percentage of net patient revenue.

The data in them is drawn largely from Medicare cost reports, which hospitals are required to file with the federal government.

This year’s report shows only an incomplete picture of the pandemic.

Baumgarten said some hospitals ended their 2020 financial years in June of that year, while others went through December.

A spokeswoman for the Colorado Hospital Association said her organization had not yet seen Baumgarten’s report and could not comment.

In the past, hospitals have noted that profits are necessary to upgrade old equipment, refurbish worn facilities and save for the future. While most of Colorado’s hospitals are nonprofit, privately owned hospitals also must pay taxes on their profits.

Athletic resort proposes Castle Pines facility Plan envisions large fitness center on 13.8-acre site

Castle Pines city officials Sam Bishop and Michael Penny are pleased with an international athletic resort’s recent proposal to build a new facility in their growing community. They see it as a key step in the city’s progression.

“We feel like we’re somewhat on the map now by getting their attention,” said Bishop, the city’s community development director.

Life Time Inc. submitted a site improvement plan in October for a 109,000-square-foot fitness center with an outdoor pool deck located on a 13.8-acre area at the southeast corner of Castle Pines Parkway and Canyonside Boulevard.

“It’s a huge coup, I think, for the community,” said City Manager Penny.

A recreation center is the number one requested amenity, Penny said. While he recognizes that the for-profit facility won’t meet all needs of all residents, Penny said Life Time, as a “premier recreation service provider,” generally matches the expectations of the people of Castle Pines.

A spa, a cafe, a children’s area, fitness studios and basketball courts will be housed in a twostory building, according to Natalie Bushaw, vice president of public relations at Life Time. The pool area will include a lap pool, a whirlpool, a leisure pool with a waterslide, and a bistro.

The center is scheduled to open in 2024. The company has five other locations in the Denver area, including one in Parker and one in Centennial where Penny, a Life Time member, works out.

traffic along Castle Pines Parkway, Penny said.

Currently, Life Time is in the process of assuring the City of Castle Pines that they can meet codes and requirements for infrastructure issues such as parking, lighting and landscaping, Bishop said. Once done, the city’s planning commission will vote to accept, reject or or request amendments to the proposal. Bishop anticipates that occurring in February or March of 2022.

Construction, which could take about 12 months, is planned to start in the third quarter of 2022.

Honoring the character of the nearly 40-yearold community while pursuing new commercial development is something Penny and Bishop said they strive to balance.

most exclusively, from sales tax,” Penny said.

Penny believes Life Time’s facility is the “first domino” in what he hopes will be a series of developments that will encourage residents to spend more time and money in the city instead of surrounding towns. It’s a goal the city has been working toward since the city council annexed enough land in 2009 and 2010 to double the size of Castle Pines, he said.

Life Time should attract additional businesses, creating a commercial core that will enhance residents’ quality of life as well as generate sales tax dollars for use “in service of community values” such as roads, parks and public events, Penny said.

“We’re really trying to keep those folks in the community, to the extent we can, by really creating a sense of place.”

quarantining after 10 days without a test. (At the time, the agency provided the option that quarantine can end after day 7 if a person tests negative.)

Now, depending on local public health orders, mask wearing may be required in public in general indoors regardless of isolation or quarantine.

Aside from the isolation guidance, the new quarantine guidance depends on how long it has been since a person’s initial vaccine shots and whether the person has received a booster shot.

For those who have been exposed to the virus, the CDC now recommends quarantine for five days followed by mask use for an additional five days for people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second Pfizer or Moderna vaccine dose — or more than two months after the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine — and have not yet received a third dose (or second dose if receiving the J&J vaccine), according to the state public health department.

The established guidelines primarily apply to those who are unvaccinated or were vaccinated more than six months ago and did not get a booster shot.

People who have more recently completed their primary vaccination series, meaning within six months of a person’s second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or within two months of their J&J dose — or who have received their third dose (or second dose if receiving the J&J vaccine) do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but they should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure.

Again, the public should note that local orders may require mask wearing in public regardless of the above guidance.

VOICES Once we start, don’t stop

H

ave we ever noticed that there was something that we used to do that was awesome in helping us achieve more, make our job a bit easier, or just helped us perform at a higher level and then for some unexplainable reason, we simply stopped doing it?

Maybe we pick up a book and as we are reading it, we feel inspired by the guidance, we underscore, highlight, and dog-ear the pages, wanting to be able to go back and revisit the wisdom being shared.

Then we recognize that we used to do the very thing that the author is recommending we do. And when we did these things, we were at the top of our game. Yet, at some point we just stopped doing that which helped us the most.

Last week we talked about starting something new. Taking the first steps necessary to achieve our goals and dreams. And that the best way to stop doing something or breaking a bad habit is by starting a new and better one.

This week let’s keep the momentum going. The encouragement here is that once we are on the

right path and doing the right things, we don’t stop.

Momentum is powerful. All it takes is the slightest push forward to get it going.

Once we have positive movement towards our Michael Norton goals and dreams, little by little we pick up steam, our confidence grows, and we are on our way, we ride the wave as momentum carries us forward.

We need to remember that momentum must be initiated. We must be the ones to engage if we are to get the ball rolling forward.

If we expect and allow someone else to start the momentum, all that means is that we are living and working on someone else’s dream and not our own. Or worse, no one is paying attention to what we want, and we are left idle, no movement, and stuck.

All we must do is start. Gentle starts, small steps, baby steps, a

slight nudge, just something to get us started and then let the momentum build. Too often we come out of the gate on fire and pour ourselves completely into a good new habit, project, or hobby only to lose the momentum just as quickly. For some, they can start out red hot and remain on fire for what they are doing, and that is always inspiring to see. However, there are many more who need to crawl, walk, and then run on their way to success. The important take-away here is that either way, we keep going, we leverage forward progress, and we don’t allow the ball to start rolling backwards toward us.

Now two weeks into the new year, did the gym membership already look like a bad investment? Or are we sticking it out?

Did we write the first chapter of our book and then shelve it? Or are we writing just one page a day and keeping our authoring dream alive? Whatever it is that we are pursuing, if we have made the decision to start, let’s not stop, it’s too soon and it’s not what we really want. What we really want is

to look back 30 days from now and see just how far we have come, and then set our mind on going even farther.

Each day when we wake up, we want to feel excited about the day, about what we can accomplish personally and professionally. We want to look back at the end of every day and feel fulfilled that we did what we said we would do, as we know there is almost no greater feeling than that of achievement.

After identifying the areas of your home that may need help, here are a few inexpensive DIY weatherization tips to reduce wasted energy and help you save on monthly energy bills: Seal cracks with caulk.

Wherever you discovered a leak, apply new caulk to seal cracks and joints, keeping drafts and moisture out of your home. And remember, leaks aren’t just found around windows and doors; consider every other area that may leak air, including where wood siding meets the concrete foundation.

Weather-strip windows and doors. In addition to caulking cracks, consider installing a foam-backed tape around windows and doors to keep heat inside.

Tattered Cover opened its first pop-up site to be located at Lone Tree’s Park Meadows mall in October and will wind down the venture in the coming days.

The space, called “Tattered Cover + Kids,” boasted more than 1,200 children’s titles. The store had 1,800 total titles, stocking best-selling adult novels as well. The seasonal store also gathered children’s gifts and special events.

The locally owned bookstore marked 50 years running in 2021 and has satellite locations in Denver International Airport, five Denver metro area stores, and will soon open a Westminster location in addition to its pop-ups.

Park Meadows Senior General Manager Pamela Kelly said by email that Tattered Cover was a great addition to the shopping facility.

“They have an outstanding longterm reputation and Park Meadows is very excited to be a continuation of that legacy and retail experi-

ence,” she said.

Kwame Spearman, Tattered Cover’s CEO, said in a statement that the pop-up will be open at Park Meadows mall until mid-January, “but we would love to see it become a long-term home for us eventually.”

Until then, the nearest location is the store’s Aspen Grove location at 7301 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.

Spearman said hosting the Park Meadows pop-up has “been an absolute pleasure.”

“We are thrilled with the response and support from the Lone Tree community,” Spearman said.

Kate Brasch, Tattered Cover’s kids book buyer, played an integral role in stocking the Park Meadows pop-up.

Popular or best-selling books at the Park Meadows location spanned from holiday classics like “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg to recent works from well-known authors like J.K. Rowling, whose new book “The Christmas Pig” follows a lost beanbag toy and the boy who finds it.

Shoppers favored author Mo Willems as well, whose “Elephant and Piggie” books are “simple, funny and kind stories about an elephant and his friend who is a pig,” she said.

Brasch also recommended her favorite books from 2021 and her most anticipated reads of 2022.

Her most-loved books of 2021 include “The Night Walk,” written and illustrated by Marie Dorleans, and “Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess,” written and illustrated by Tom Gauld.

“I love this quirky fairy tale with illustrations that are fine in every sense of the word,” she said.

Among children’s books in 2022, she is most looking forward to checking out “Being a Dog — A Tail of Mindfulness,” written by Maria Gianferrari and illustrated by Pete Oswald. The book teaches about all five senses by following “a dog just being a dog,” she said, and will be published on April 5.

Among adult books, Brasch plans to read “Sea of Tranquility” by Emily St. John Mandel, which also will

come out April 5.

“Earlier novels of Emily St. John Mandel include ‘Station Eleven’ and ‘The Glass Hotel,’” Brasch

said. “I so enjoyed both of these titles, so look forward to this new fantastical and hopefully fantastic book.”

Highest-elevation spots in metro Denver counties sit at some unexpected places

o outdoor-recreation enthusiasts, Colorado is known for its fourteeners: mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet. But take a drive through the Denver area, and you might notice how the elevation varies — even all the way down here.

Finding the highest-elevation points in metro Denver counties takes you to places that you might not expect to hold the top spots. Some sit in areas that make for great photos or bike rides.

Here’s a look at the highest points in several metro counties and information about their surroundings.

Douglas County The highest point in Douglas County is near Thunder Butte, according to a statement from county spokesperson Wendy Holmes.

The spot’s elevation, according to the “LIDAR 2020 Contours,” is 9,836 feet, the statement said.

A butte is an isolated hill with steep sides and a flat top, similar to but narrower than a mesa.

The next-highest point is near Devils Head, at an elevation of 9,748 feet, according to the county.

Both points sit in the southwest part of the county. Thunder Butte is located west of State Highway 67, southwest of the Town of Larkspur, according to a map provided by the county.

Devils Head sits far south of where state Highway 67 meets Rampart Range Road. It’s east of Rampart Range Road, west of Larkspur.

Jefferson County The highest point in Jefferson County is Buffalo Peak at 11,589 feet — also known as Freeman Peak, according to a statement from county spokesperson Julie Story.

“Buffalo Peak is part of the Kenosha Mountains and is located (about) 2.5 miles south of Wellington Lake, just east of the Jefferson-Park county line, in the Lost Creek Wilderness of Pike National Forest,” the statement said.

Some other relatively high summits in Jefferson that are closer to the Denver area, according to Jefferson’s statement, include the following spots: • On Green Mountain at 6,855 feet • North Table Mountain has three peaks; the highest is at 6,575 feet • South Table Mountain has two peaks; the highest is at 6,335 feet • On Mount Carbon at 5,772 feet The information in the county’s statement came from a data set from the United States Geological Survey dated 2010, according to the county.

Arapahoe County Unless you live in the immediate area, there’s a good hance you’ve never passed by Arapahoe County’s highest stretch.

It sits near the edge of far southeast Aurora, just outside of Blackstone Country Club, amid the maze of twisting suburban streets.

Douglas County sits a few blocks to the south across County Line Road — and Elbert County sits a short drive to the southeast.

Michael Hubbard, a geographic information system analyst with Arapahoe County, believes that the highest point in the county point sits near the intersection of Powhaton Road and Otero Drive, at around 6,220 feet above sea level.

Hubbard said he determined that location from “our 10-foot elevation contours that cover the entire county.”

Near the high point, the south Aurora area features the large Southlands outdoor mall but quickly gives way to the plains to the east.

The high point is not far from where Smoky Hill Road ends, dipping south of Arapahoe Road.

The Smoky Hill Trail, once the shortest route to Denver from Kansas, ran roughly along parts of what is today Smoky Hill Road, according to the Aurora History Museum. The route was used from the 1850s until 1870, according to a guide from the museum online.

“Archaeological evidence found near (a historical) marker indicates that native peoples occupied the area approximately 850 years before the first European American immigrants arrived,” the guide says.

Adams County Another place where the suburbs meet the plains, Adams County’s highest point, just off of Interstate 70, is not far from an industrial area.

Drivers can access the area off a frontage road along I-70 — Colfax Avenue, which, after some twists and turns, continues east past the I-70/E-470 interchange and crosses Powhaton Road.

Based on the county’s contour map, the highest point in the county is northeast of that crossing.

It is 5,670 feet in elevation, located on 26th Avenue, approximately 2,680 feet east of Powhaton Road, said a statement from county spokesperson Amber DiGiallonardo.

Signs advertising new homes in the area sit at the intersection of Powhaton Road and 26th Avenue, a mark of the continuing suburban sprawl.

Denver County At first glance, the area of Kipling Street and Belleview Avenue looks like a nondescript suburban intersection: a Taco Bell here, a King Soopers there.

Walk a couple blocks north, though, and you’re out of Jefferson County and back inDenver, close to Denver’s highest point.

“The highest point within the City and County of Denver is somewhere along the south and/or west fence lines behind the residence 4899 S. Johnson St.,” a statement from Denver staff said. “These fence lines are along the boundary between Denver and Jefferson counties, and elevation continues

to rise to the south and west. The elevation here is approximately 5,684 feet -5,685 feet.”

If you don’t pay close attention to the look of the street signs, you wouldn’t know you’re back in Denver.

The spot is part of the area where Denver’s boundaries snake farthest southwest. Parts of that general area were annexed into Denver sometime in the 1970s, according to materials on the Denver Public Library’s website.

On the other end of Denver near its southeast edges, another high point sits near where Interstate 25 meets Belleview Avenue.

“Honorable mention should be given to the building site at 6900 E. Layton Ave. in the Belleview Station area,” Denver’s statement to Colorado Community Media said. “Prior to the development of this block, city contour data showed a couple of small domes exceeding 5,685 feet. It is unlikely that these survived development.”

Elevations at other points of interest in Denver, according to the city, include: • Loretto Heights Park, just to the west of the Loretto Heights campus, rises to approximately 5,510 feet. The “historic building(s)” on the campus sit at about 5,490 feet. The 70-acre campus, a former Catholic college that grew out of an effort by the Sisters of Loretto that dates back to 1891, sits off Federal Boulevard and Dartmouth Avenue.

• Inspiration Point Park summits at approximately 5,415 feet. The park sits along Sheridan Boulevard just north of I-70 and offers compelling views.

• The old radio station at the southwest corner of Ruby Hill Park is at 5,395 feet. The park sits in southwest Denver near the Overland Golf Course.

• Denver International Airport ranges from 5,300 feet to 5,400 feet.

Broomfield Broomfield’s highest point sits near Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, a place with a complicated history.

The high point sits at 5,851.11 feet, according to a statement from the city and county.

“It was interesting to see how the contours changed from one end of Elbert County to the other,” Thompson said, speaking about the map. “The high point in the south end is about 1,000 feet higher than Kiowa and 2,000 feet higher than Limon. It’s a more pronounced elevation change than I would have anticipated!”

‘Carry Me Away’ show shares imagination Depot Art Gallery exhibit runs through Feb. 27

Local painter and pastel artist Diane Fechenbach was juror for the new exhibit, “Carry Me Away,” at the Littleton Fine Arts Guild’s Depot Art Gallery, which will run through Feb. 27.

Members had a wide range of possibilities for subject matter. The title could be taken literally: cars, trains, planes, buses — anything that could physically carry one away ... or more figuratively, as in a dream/thought, an ideal place, such as Merrie Wicks’ oil painting, “Peace,” focusing on a quiet mountain stream ...

The exhibit opened Jan. 11 — minus the usual reception, due to COVID — and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Masks are required for all visitors and/or the exhibit can also be viewed online, at depotartgallery.org.

Fechenbach’s artist statement, found online, relates to the painting by Wicks: “My passion is dramatic light and shadow ...” Light reflects in Wick’s flowing stream and one can almost hear its soft sound as it passes over rocks and pebbles and small plants and critters.

Other paintings are in definite contrast, such as Teri Hendrix’s bright abstract painting: “Into the Rabbit Hole,” a very contemporary interpretation of Alice’s adventures in swirling oranges, compared to the traditional Tenniel images in the original Lewis Carroll version of the treasured “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

We also received an image of photographer Carl Paulson’s “Horses in Nebraska,” a portrait of three curious horses looking at a viewer over a fence, perhaps hoping for some quiet conversation and maybe a pat on the nose? Or a juicy apple or carrot?

The Littleton Fine Arts Guild’s many members also exhibit artwork at Littleton Town Hall’s Stanton Gallery, and in mini-exhibits at the Arapahoe Justice Center, Smokin’ Fins Restaurant on Littleton’s Main Street, Nixon’s Coffee Shop in Englewood and at Vita Senior Living on Littleton Boulevard, changing monthly.

New members of the guild members are welcomed and are expected to participate in/ help with exhibits and activities throughout the year. Dues are $45 a year. Huskies hoops team encourages coach Unselfishness, cohesiveness of players helps amid inexperience

Douglas County High School has the 10th-ranked boys basketball team in Colorado, according to the Jan. 3 CHSAANow.com poll.

However, Huskies coach Clay Comstock admits that he didn’t know how good this season’s team could be.

“It is the unselfishness of this group because they haven’t really played together that much up to this point,” said Comstock. “We had a lot of seniors graduate last year so this is pretty much a brand-new team with some new players that don’t have a ton of varsity experience.

“You never know what you are going to get out there on the floor but the product has been nice so far with the unselfishness, the cohesiveness and team basketball.

It doesn’t really surprise me just how well we’ve looked at times.”

Douglas County raised its record to 9-1 on Jan. 4 with a 7034 non-league victory over Pine Creek.

The Huskies wrapped up the win over the Eagles with a dominating second-half performance.

Douglas County outscored the visitors 38-12 in the second half and held a 15-0 advantage over Pine Creek in the fourth quarter.

“Our defense can really pressure when we are locked in mentally,” added Comstock. “A game like this after the winter break was absolutely good. Tonight was

actually a pretty clean effort. I expected a little more rusty play. But the overall efficiency and execution, I thought we did both.”

Senior Jaeton Hackley scored 16 points for the Huskies and had five assists to go along with three steals. Jaheim Hall had 15 points and Ty Nettles, a 5-10 senior, finished with 14 points and three steals.

“We were a little rusty at the beginning but we picked it up in the second half and played as a team,” said Nettles. “We can get something out of this game, just making sure we run our sets and not doing things we don’t do and making sure we play our game no matter what the score is. `We took a tough loss against (Denver) East. We learned we can’t play one-on-one, we have to play strong with the ball and not have turnovers.”

Fourth-ranked Denver East handed the Huskies their only loss so far this season with an 8750 victory on Dec. 18.

Douglas County traveled to George Washington for a Jan. 11 game and will open Continental League play on Jan. 14 against top-ranked ThunderRidge.

“East took it to us,” said Comstock. “Some of that inexperience from our younger guys, you saw it that night. They exposed us in some ways and we did not come ready to play. I don’t believe you will see it again. We learned a lot in that game.

“The league is going to be very tough. How we handle adversity against the better teams will be a key. And just overall being a tough team. Tough teams win in this sport and our league is so competitive that each night you have to bring it.”

Kail Burns of Mountain Vista High School’s co-op team scored the first two goals of his high school hockey career in a game against Cherry Creek on Jan. 7 at the Family Sports Center in Centennial.

And they were both important goals as the Vista team notched a 4-3 overtime victory over the Bruins.

Burns, a sophomore at ThunderRidge High School, scored on a breakaway for the first goal of the game, which helped stake the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 lead. Then he tallied the game-winning goal at the 3:11 mark of the overtime off an assist from Reid Watson.

“We came out and started the game very well,” said Burns. “We slowed down in the second because

we were taking some penalties but we were able to kill them. Our goalie (Oliver Kim) stood tall. In OT it was a beautiful pass by Reid, and I was in the right area and was able to score.”

Burns gave Vista a 1-0 lead when he got loose on a breakaway.

“The puck went out to the defenseman and he coughed it up and I was able to go in on a breakaway,” said Burns. “Luckily the shot went over the goalie’s glove.”

Watson had two assists in the game for Vista. Jaden Montoya and Jackson Lindermann had the other two goals for the Golden Eagles.

Cherry Creek held a 29-25 edge in shots on goal but the Bruins were 0-for-6 on the power play while Montoya’s goal was a power play tally for Vista.

Vista, which had a game Jan. 8 against Denver East, improved to 4-3 on the season with the win in its third consecutive OT contest.

“You are hoping for better results but we faced a lot of injuries,” said Vista coach Kevin Insana. “We were missing a lot of our top forwards and D in the first semester. Now we are are getting fairly healthy we’re looking to get it all.”

Creek, which faced defending state champion Valor Christian on Jan. 8, lost its third one-goal game this season and saw its record fall to 2-4-1.

“We got even and the momentum was there and we got it to overtime,” said Creek coach Jeff Mielnicki. “We’ve played a lot of hockey.

We’ve played almost 55 games (including the fall season) and we’ve been in every game. Other than the Dakota Ridge game we’ve played really good hockey. A lot of one-goal games, 2-1 or 4-3, but we’re a young team and have some COVID issues.

We were missing kids for this game.

That’s not an excuse. A lot of teams are going to have this. It’s frustrating.”

There are so many great books for young readers! We can usually

find a book that your child will love, and want to read — many for our younger readers are told from the viewpoint of an animal (like “Pax” or “Wings of Fire”), or are narrated by someone with a very different background (like “Look Both Ways” or “The Benefits of Being an Octopus”), or come in graphic-novel format (“Drama” or “Click” or “The Owl Diaries”). Come in and tell us what you like, and we will try to match you with a fabulous book!

Can you provide an overview of how the store supports and works with area educators?

We always offer an immediate 10% discount for educators and work closely with librarians and teachers to ensure that we have the required and recommended books that are assigned to students. We have held events in-store with PTOs and English departments to raise money for the PTO or department (they get a portion of sales during a specific time period) as well as to purchase books from the wish-lists of teachers and staff members.

What were some of your most memorable partnerships or events held with Douglas County educators or schools

in 2021?

In August 2021 we had a weeklong fundraiser for the Legend High School English Department that was phenomenal! We also held a PTO fundraiser in December 2021 for Mountain View and Northeast Elementary Schools’ PTO, donated a portion of the sales and purchased over 30 wish-list books for teachers and staff!

What partnerships or events with schools and educators are you looking forward to in 2022?

We are thrilled to be a part of the Battle of the Books put on by Douglas County School District — finals take place in February 2022. We have all of the books for the third/fourth and fifth/ sixth graders, and all of the books for the high school level. We would love to work with the other local Parker high schools (Ponderosa, Lutheran and Chaparral) to hold events (fundraisers, poetry slams, game nights, readings). Just contact the store!

Douglas County Government reserves the right to reject any and all proposals, to waive formalities, informalities, or irregularities contained in a said proposal and furthermore, to award a contract for items herein, either in whole or in part, if it is deemed to be in the best interest of the County to do so. Additionally, we reserve the right to negotiate optional items/services with the successful vendor.

While we thank those on the council who stood up to Big Tobacco, we are disappointed Mayor Hancock vetoed this lifesaving ordinance, overturning the strong action the council took to protect kids. Mayor Hancock was willing to put Big Tobacco’s profits over the health of Denver’s kids.
